2:15
Speaker 3: about the Olympic opening ceremonies on Friday nights. I'm going
2:18
Speaker 3: to weigh in on that just a little bit. And
2:21
Speaker 3: also something I really haven't had a lot of opportunity
2:23
Speaker 3: to talk about. I know Hopy did. Last week. Two
2:27
Speaker 3: counties in West Virginia that were previously Democrats strongholds Fayette
2:31
Speaker 3: County and here in Kanawa County have both flipped to
2:34
Speaker 3: Republican And I want to talk about that a little
2:36

2:52
Speaker 3: he joined us right now, Chris, good morning, welcome to
2:54
Speaker 3: the show.
2:55
Speaker 5: Look, thanks for having.
2:56
Speaker 3: Me, Thank you for being their district one right correct,
2:58
Speaker 3: Southern Southern. Yeah, that's about It's it's a little bit
3:01
Speaker 3: more easy now to figure out the districts because once,
3:05
Speaker 3: I mean before it was very, very convoluted.
3:09
Speaker 6: I think the farest I have to go was Franklin
3:12
Speaker 6: up in Penalton. It's about three and a half hour drive.
3:15
Speaker 3: Not Martinsburg like it was before that diagonal I mean
3:19
Speaker 3: between Charleston and Martinsburg. But it's it's a a little
3:22
Speaker 3: simple now. Tell us about Chris Reid.
3:24
Speaker 6: I grew up on the west side of Charleston, went
3:26
Speaker 6: out of district to George Washington. I went to school
3:30
Speaker 6: with WU eventually graduated at West Virginia State. I moved
3:35
Speaker 6: to the Washington, DC area, worked in restaurants and as
3:38
Speaker 6: a bike messenger, and got involved in social activism, particularly
3:43
Speaker 6: around the wars in Central America, anti apartheid activism, and
3:50
Speaker 6: then I came back to Charleston and got my teaching certificate,
3:54
Speaker 6: and I've been a teacher for the last twenty five years.
4:00
Speaker 6: Just about everything under the sun at one point or another.
4:03
Speaker 6: Most of the time I've spent with at risk youth
4:05
Speaker 6: that that's the one area that I feel like I've
4:07
Speaker 6: got quite a bit of experience with.
4:10
Speaker 3: What is it about working with at risk youth that
4:12
Speaker 3: appeals to you?
4:14
Speaker 5: Well, it wasn't something I sought out in life. Has
4:17
Speaker 5: just sort of Yeah, that's right. And I spent a
4:20
Speaker 5: lot of.
4:20
Speaker 6: Time at job Corps.
4:23
Speaker 5: It seems to me.
4:26
Speaker 6: That lots of times they've had the curiosity taken out
4:31
Speaker 6: of them, whether it's impoverished background, their school is overburdened,
4:39
Speaker 6: they don't have significant staffing, there's turnover of teachers, lack
4:44
Speaker 6: a consistency, So when they come to job Corps, a
4:47
Speaker 6: lot of them are thinking, well, this is my last chance.
4:50
Speaker 6: So you know, lots of times they really feel that way.
4:55
Speaker 3: So with all this experience that you've had, as you said,
4:57
Speaker 3: you're at Charlest and Natives, spent time in d C
5:00
Speaker 3: in the classroom, working with job Corps, various things, why
5:03
Speaker 3: did you decide to run for Congress?
5:05
Speaker 6: Well that's something I thought about doing when I came
5:07
Speaker 6: back from d C in nineteen ninety, but I could
5:09
Speaker 6: just never seem to get things move. And now that
5:14
Speaker 6: I retired, my last job was at the Davids Child Shelter.
5:17
Speaker 6: I left there back in February to run so I
5:21
Speaker 6: just never really had it together. I had a son
5:23
Speaker 6: and a wife, and you know, going back to d
5:27
Speaker 6: C I don't think would have worked very well for
5:29
Speaker 6: the family at the time.
5:32
Speaker 3: Talking with Chris Reid again, who is a Democratic candidate
5:34
Speaker 3: for Congress and district one of the Dave Island shill
5:36
Speaker 3: in five eighty, Life brought to you in part by
5:38
Speaker 3: Husband's Pizza. This month that your favorite Huston's order any
5:40
Speaker 3: regularly priced large eighteen inch pizza and get a twole
5:43
Speaker 3: there PEPSI had no additional charge. So tell us what
5:45
Speaker 3: your basic platform is.
5:47
Speaker 6: Well, I basically have I guess two things. I'm highly
5:54
Speaker 6: critical of the current psychiatric industrial complex, industrial pharmaceutical complex.
6:02
Speaker 6: A lot of these at risk kids are on psychiatric drugs,
6:05
Speaker 6: and I think this sets them up for failure. I
6:08
Speaker 6: don't think the outcomes that psychiatry says that they're you know,
6:13
Speaker 6: getting a match up with the data. I'm also critical
6:19
Speaker 6: of our foreign policy, bipartisan foreign policy establishment in DC.
6:24
Speaker 6: So those are the two things I feel like I.
6:28
Speaker 5: Know a good bit about.
6:29
Speaker 6: I'm also a supporter of public education and higher education.
6:34
Speaker 3: There has been a move Chris in Kanawa County and
6:38
Speaker 3: other areas really around the country. But we talk about
6:40
Speaker 3: it like we're a local show with people parents choosing
6:45
Speaker 3: for one reason to another to explore sometimes a something
6:49
Speaker 3: other than public schools, whether it's charter schools or whether
6:52
Speaker 3: it's a private school or home schooling. Why do you
6:55
Speaker 3: think that is?
6:57
Speaker 6: Well, I think the school system is overburdened. Public schools
7:03
Speaker 6: don't have the luxury of picking and choosing who their
7:06
Speaker 6: students are. You know, there's quite a bit of of
7:10
Speaker 6: a golf in academic attainment between say the parochial Catholic
7:17
Speaker 6: schools in West Virginia, who produce merit scholarships like they're
7:23
Speaker 6: you know, on assembly line or something, and then the
7:25
Speaker 6: public schools, you know, they're the society's ills and such
7:32
Speaker 6: fall heavily on the public schools. So it's understandable if
7:38
Speaker 6: parents find that the school is not meeting their needs.
7:42
Speaker 6: But I would tend to suggest that we keep our
7:47
Speaker 6: funding for the public education because that's what's open to everybody.
7:51
Speaker 3: Ken we can talk with Chris Reid, who is an
7:53
Speaker 3: Demmocratic candidate for Congress and District one, Chris, you're running
7:56
Speaker 3: against the incumbent Republican seat now, Carol Miller, and an
7:59
Speaker 3: end pendant name west Holden. What makes you the better
8:03
Speaker 3: candidate of those three?
8:05
Speaker 5: Well, I think.
8:08
Speaker 6: I ran into west down in McDowell County the other day,
8:11
Speaker 6: and back when he was at Rockefeller, I showed up
8:14
Speaker 6: his office one day. I had got laid off at
8:17
Speaker 6: job corn. I stopped by his office and he took
8:19
Speaker 6: me in, and.
8:20
Speaker 5: You know, he's very professional.
8:22
Speaker 6: I think if you look at the Ukraine War right
8:28
Speaker 6: now and Wes Holden's position on the Ukraine War and
8:31
Speaker 6: Carol Miller's position on the Ukraine War, there's not much difference.
8:35
Speaker 6: I think we missed opportunities to avoid the war with negotiations,
8:40
Speaker 6: and there's been a couple opportunities after the war started
8:43
Speaker 6: to negotiated into it. But these opportunities were missed in Washington.
8:50
Speaker 3: What would you have done differently if you were in Washington?
8:52
Speaker 3: How would you have voted differently? Obviously you're part of
8:54
Speaker 3: a larger body, But if you were there, what would
8:56
Speaker 3: you have done differently?
8:57
Speaker 6: Well, Unfortunately, because as a part of some politics, you
9:02
Speaker 6: have a few Democrats who are willing to make an
9:06
Speaker 6: issue over the situation in Gauza, and you have probably
9:11
Speaker 6: a little bit more Republicans who are more than a
9:15
Speaker 6: little skeptical about sending more money to Ukraine. So I'm
9:19
Speaker 6: kind of like, you know, both of these people, both
9:22
Speaker 6: of these groups are on the right track. I understand
9:26
Speaker 6: why it's a parts of issue. I think that both
9:28
Speaker 6: of the wars are something that we need to find
9:32
Speaker 6: a way to wind down.
9:34
Speaker 3: Let's talk about some things on the national front. Of course,
9:36
Speaker 3: we just you know, two weeks ago, we had the
9:39
Speaker 3: assassination attempt on former President Trump. Last week President Biden
9:44
Speaker 3: announcing that he would be leaving the race, will continue
9:47
Speaker 3: his term with Kamala Harris is going to be the
9:50
Speaker 3: Democratic nominee. What is your take on either one of
9:54
Speaker 3: those things, and what do you think about the rhetoric
9:56
Speaker 3: where we are in America right now on both sides?
10:00
Speaker 3: Two part question.
10:01
Speaker 6: Well, I came back from my wife and I just
10:04
Speaker 6: got back from a son's wedding in China. We stopped
10:06
Speaker 6: back in Pittsburgh that we got back the morning of.
10:09
Speaker 5: The assassination attempt.
10:11
Speaker 6: So obviously that's got the country on jitters and they
10:15
Speaker 6: fired this secret service person. So I don't know if
10:19
Speaker 6: that's gonna help it out. What's the other question, Well,
10:21
Speaker 6: we'll focus on that. I shouldn't have asked those at
10:23
Speaker 6: the same time. Let's focus on that question.
10:25
Speaker 3: First, your part, your your opinion of the of what
10:29
Speaker 3: happened with Joe Biden basically saying he's not gonna run.
10:34
Speaker 7: Uh.
10:34
Speaker 3: And also the assassination attempt on Donald.
10:36
Speaker 6: Trump, that's an assassination attempt was certainly, you know, unfortunate
10:41
Speaker 6: and luckily didn't succeed. As far as the Democrats in Washington,
10:48
Speaker 6: you know, they say they're worried about Trump overturning democracy,
10:54
Speaker 6: but their actions here over the last week, I don't
10:57
Speaker 6: know if they've got their story straight yet. And well,
11:00
Speaker 6: at one point Biden wasn't going anywhere, there's no problem,
11:03
Speaker 6: He's perfectly fine. And then he has a debate and
11:06
Speaker 6: that goes south, and then all of a sudden, there's
11:09
Speaker 6: a lot of chatter, and then, you know, one faction
11:12
Speaker 6: says he's an ace on foreign policy. Other people are
11:17
Speaker 6: trying to push him out the door. He still says
11:19
Speaker 6: he's going nowhere. Sunday, he's gone Tuesday. Harris's predumptive nominee.
11:26
Speaker 6: She hasn't won a single vote in a presidential contest.
11:30
Speaker 6: She didn't win a single delegate in two thousand when
11:33
Speaker 6: she twenty twenty when she ran for president. So this
11:37
Speaker 6: is unprecedented in American history. The LBJ analogy doesn't work
11:43
Speaker 6: because Humphrey actually went around to the state conventions around
11:47
Speaker 6: the country and had, you know, I don't know, two
11:50
Speaker 6: to three months of campaigning to do before the convention.
11:54
Speaker 3: What about the rhetoric in America right now? It seems
11:56
Speaker 3: that there's an awful lot of venom out there on
12:00
Speaker 3: both sides. And we were at a point, in my opinion,
12:02
Speaker 3: that we were at a point where we used to
12:04
Speaker 3: be able to discuss things Republicans, Democrats, liberal conservatives. Now
12:09
Speaker 3: it just doesn't seem like it's that way. What is
12:12
Speaker 3: your opinion on this?
12:13
Speaker 6: Well, by focusing on the forever wars that we keep
12:18
Speaker 6: landing ourselves in that I don't find that's a part
12:21
Speaker 6: of an issue. I think I can approach that issue
12:23
Speaker 6: and speak to both sides of the issue. There are
12:26
Speaker 6: still peace champions in the Democratic Party. There's Republicans who
12:32
Speaker 6: voted for Trump in twenty sixteen because he said he
12:35
Speaker 6: was going to wind down these forever wars. And it
12:41
Speaker 6: didn't exactly happen, but so you know that I'm trying
12:45
Speaker 6: to get a message that can hit both sides of
12:48
Speaker 6: the aisle.
12:49
Speaker 3: Let's talk about being a Democrat in West Virginia these days,
12:53
Speaker 3: I said, I mentioned earlier that Knawa County has now
12:56
Speaker 3: flipped Republican, Fayette County has now flipped on to get
12:59
Speaker 3: into that story a little bit, like Ron talk about
13:01
Speaker 3: the difficult, and I think you would agree it's somewhat
13:03
Speaker 3: difficult to be a Democrat in West Virginia these days
13:06
Speaker 3: because of the perception or so on and so forth.
13:11
Speaker 3: Your thoughts on any of that.
13:12
Speaker 6: Well, you look at the voter turnout and the election
13:17
Speaker 6: I ran in.
13:18
Speaker 5: And obviously that's obvious.
13:22
Speaker 6: Derek Evans got thirty eight thousand votes and I got
13:24
Speaker 6: twenty eight thousand votes.
13:26
Speaker 5: So I can't win an.
13:28
Speaker 6: Election just relying on the Democrats have voted in the primary.
13:33
Speaker 6: So I have to be able to appeal to folks
13:36
Speaker 6: that are either Republican used to be Democrat. I mean
13:39
Speaker 6: for every person in West Virginia I met who said, well,
13:42
Speaker 6: I used to be a Democrat, but the party left me.
13:45
Speaker 5: You know i'd be a rich man.
13:47
Speaker 3: You do hear that a lot, which is basically what
13:49
Speaker 3: you heard with You've also heard that about some you know,
13:52
Speaker 3: you've heard that on both sides. I mean that a
13:55
Speaker 3: lot of people feeling that the parties have left them.
13:57
Speaker 3: We'll give you thirty seconds, Chris, why should some one
14:00
Speaker 3: vote for Chris Miller District one Democrat for Congress.
14:03
Speaker 6: Well, somebody will stick to my guns, particularly on my
14:08
Speaker 6: criticism of psychiatry and the foreign policy establishment. I'm not
14:13
Speaker 6: looking for a long extended career into my eighties.
14:19
Speaker 5: I'm retired. I'm not really a career. Just looking at this,
14:26
Speaker 5: you know thing.
14:28
Speaker 6: Maybe it's like some of the younger politicians and Acossio Cortes.
14:32
Speaker 6: She comes in, you know, high flying, She's going to
14:35
Speaker 6: change everything next thing.
14:36
Speaker 5: You know, she's just right with the rest of the establishment.
14:41
Speaker 3: Okay, do you have a website or anything Facebook or

17:40
Speaker 3: Thursday night, the balt Toyota Events Center and Patrick Street

17:45
Speaker 3: presents Inside the Huddle with Tony Couredy benefit of the
17:48
Speaker 3: United Way of Central West Virginia, the voice of the Mountaineers.
17:51
Speaker 3: Tony Coreedy is here to talk about it. Tony, good morning,
17:53
Speaker 3: welcome to the show.
17:55
Speaker 11: Good morning to you, Dave. How are you?
17:56
Speaker 3: I'm doing fine, Thank you for being here. We of
17:59
Speaker 3: course w CHES Radio long with Fox eleven and WCS Television.
18:03
Speaker 3: No relation general contract to Michael's exectmail others hoping to
18:07
Speaker 3: bring this year for those who have not been at
18:10
Speaker 3: one of these events. Tony, what goes on.
18:13
Speaker 11: Well, it is kind of a West Virginia styled indoor tailgates,
18:19
Speaker 11: so to speak. So, as you know, Dave, each year,
18:22
Speaker 11: people start to get excited around this time of the year.
18:24
Speaker 11: The team begins practice on Wednesday, and so it starts
18:27
Speaker 11: to build up. And so this is kind of our
18:29
Speaker 11: start to the sports year. And what I do is
18:33
Speaker 11: I come down and kind of give an overview as
18:37
Speaker 11: to what the expectations are, what are the storylines for football,
18:42
Speaker 11: for basketball, and a few of the other WVU sports
18:47
Speaker 11: and kind of get everyone you know, greased up and
18:50
Speaker 11: a little bit of an insight as to what's going
18:52
Speaker 11: on this year. I'll spend a good chunk of time
18:55
Speaker 11: in addition to those topics on what's going on within
19:00
Speaker 11: college sports. And for those that follow it closely, they
19:02
Speaker 11: know that this past Friday there was a major announcement
19:07
Speaker 11: through the settlement that's going on involving a class action
19:10
Speaker 11: suit that really will change college sports as we know
19:14
Speaker 11: them completely. This is the biggest change in the history
19:19
Speaker 11: of college athletics, and that is going to usher in
19:23
Speaker 11: a revenue sharing starting this time next year, where student
19:27
Speaker 11: athletes will be paid significant numbers by the universities to
19:32
Speaker 11: play their sport, and primarily it's football and basketball. But
19:36
Speaker 11: it leads to a series of massive changes. And before
19:39
Speaker 11: I do my whole deal and my whole speech, I
19:41
Speaker 11: just kind of say that's one of the other topics
19:43
Speaker 11: that we're going to go into. And all of this
19:45
Speaker 11: is done as a fundraiser for the United Way of
19:49
Speaker 11: Central West Virginia.
19:51
Speaker 3: And you know, Tony, there have been so many changes
19:54
Speaker 3: in the world of college athletics. You've been doing this
19:56
Speaker 3: for a while. There have probably been more changes to
19:59
Speaker 3: the landscape of college athletics in the past five six
20:02
Speaker 3: years and there were in the previous one hundred, one
20:04
Speaker 3: hundred and fifty. Would you agree with that?
20:07
Speaker 11: Yeah, And I think you could even lessen the window, Dave,
20:09
Speaker 11: you could probably even say within the last four years,
20:13
Speaker 11: three years, because transfer portals, you know, was on was
20:18
Speaker 11: one of the big moves. But I think it all
20:20
Speaker 11: started with nil. Once that decision was made in the
20:23
Speaker 11: Obannon case, which said that student athletes should be allowed
20:27
Speaker 11: to generate money off of their name, their image, and
20:30
Speaker 11: their likeness. That opened the door and from there everything
20:34
Speaker 11: kind of went into full speed. And it's kind of
20:36
Speaker 11: interesting in that, you know, West Virginia University athletes have
20:40
Speaker 11: played prominent roles in some of these major landmark changes.
20:45
Speaker 11: The first being former WV running back Sean Alston. That
20:49
Speaker 11: became the Alston Case, and that was a class action
20:51
Speaker 11: case which basically said that universities were not fully funding
20:56
Speaker 11: student athletes that were on scholarship. That made a massive
20:59
Speaker 11: change that led two dollars each year being presented to
21:04
Speaker 11: student athletes. And then the other part of it was
21:06
Speaker 11: this past fall into the Winner the Raekwon Battle decision
21:11
Speaker 11: that came out of Judge John Bailey's court room of
21:13
Speaker 11: the Northern Panhandle. That was a massive change that basically
21:18
Speaker 11: said to the NCAA, no, you cannot limit a student
21:23
Speaker 11: athlete's ability to transfer and gain immediate eligibility. And the
21:27
Speaker 11: NCAA eventually just threw up its hands, didn't protest it,
21:32
Speaker 11: didn't try to take it any further within the judicial system.
21:35
Speaker 11: So we've got two landmark decisions that impact college athletes
21:39
Speaker 11: across the country that came basically right out of a
21:42
Speaker 11: WVU in essence involvement.
21:45
Speaker 3: Remember when you used to come to events like this
21:47
Speaker 3: and similar events around the state prior to football season
21:50
Speaker 3: at all, you talked about was who the starting running
21:52
Speaker 3: back was going to be.
21:55
Speaker 11: Yes, those are the old days. This is and I
21:59
Speaker 11: said this, I did want these in Parkersburg for the
22:01
Speaker 11: Boys and Girls Club there on Saturday. I said, I'm
22:05
Speaker 11: going to give you an overview on this. I'm not
22:07
Speaker 11: going to go into the absolute weeds on it because
22:12
Speaker 11: your eyes will glass over. Because still at the end
22:16
Speaker 11: of the day, I think from a fan perspective, you know,
22:20
Speaker 11: it's about watching the games. And I know that this
22:23
Speaker 11: also will take some fans away from it. They'll they'll
22:26
Speaker 11: kind of throw their hands up and say, I'm done
22:28
Speaker 11: with this. It's become professional sports. And the reality of
22:31
Speaker 11: it is it has. It has become professional sports. So
22:35
Speaker 11: you have to have a new level of understanding or
22:40
Speaker 11: acceptance of what this has become. But that's what it is.
22:44
Speaker 11: And this is the This is the jump point and
22:48
Speaker 11: a build up that has been happening really over the
22:51
Speaker 11: last ten to fifteen years, when television dollars just became
22:57
Speaker 11: so large that conferences took those dollars gave those back
23:00
Speaker 11: to the schools. The schools then started to pay salaries
23:04
Speaker 11: to coaches that were astronomical in comparison of what they
23:08
Speaker 11: used to be. I mean, I'll give you a really
23:10
Speaker 11: quick one.
23:10
Speaker 5: Here.
23:11
Speaker 11: Don Neel in his final year after twenty one years
23:14
Speaker 11: at West Virginia, the winning this coach of all time,
23:17
Speaker 11: undefeated twice, played for the national championship in eighty eight.
23:20
Speaker 11: We know the story. And his very last year as
23:23
Speaker 11: the all time winning this coach at West Virginia, he
23:25
Speaker 11: made two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
23:27
Speaker 5: That was.
23:28
Speaker 11: That was two thousand and one. So now jumped forward,
23:32
Speaker 11: you know, twenty three years later, and there are coaches,
23:37
Speaker 11: there are there are defensive coordinators, There are coordinators that
23:40
Speaker 11: are making over a million. These guys are getting bonuses
23:43
Speaker 11: of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars and so everything
23:47
Speaker 11: changed and eventually it's just natural human progression and human
23:52
Speaker 11: you know, take wait a second. If these coaches are
23:54
Speaker 11: making this money, the student athletes finally got their voice
23:58
Speaker 11: heard and said we need to make some of that money.
24:00
Speaker 11: And that's what it's going to be. And that's what's happening.
24:02
Speaker 3: It's it's it's totally changed, for sure. The Dave Island
24:05
Speaker 3: showing five AA Live Brown to Part by Morgan to Morgan,
24:07
Speaker 3: America's largest injury law firm. Before we let you go,
24:09
Speaker 3: I do want to talk about some actual things with
24:12
Speaker 3: the Mountaineers on the field, not necessarily at the bank. Uh.
24:16
Speaker 3: What's the most common question that you get from Mountaineer
24:19
Speaker 3: fans when you're out at about you mentioned you did
24:21
Speaker 3: an event at Parkersburg? What? What if the on the
24:24
Speaker 3: field stuff, Tony? What are people talking about with the
24:26
Speaker 3: Mountaineers heading into the twenty twenty four fall campaign.
24:30
Speaker 11: If it's the same question they've asked for the last
24:33
Speaker 11: start of every football season, how many games are we
24:35
Speaker 11: going to win? Into which, into which I always reply, well,
24:40
Speaker 11: it depends, it all. It all varies on a bunch
24:43
Speaker 11: of different things. But here's what I here's my theme
24:48
Speaker 11: and my belief going into this season that now, after
24:53
Speaker 11: five full years at West Virginia, Neil Brown has finally
24:58
Speaker 11: reached the point where the cupboard is now at the
25:02
Speaker 11: level that it needs to be to cook the recipe
25:05
Speaker 11: that he needs to cook. He inherited a program that
25:08
Speaker 11: from a roster perspective and talent standpoint, was just absolutely
25:14
Speaker 11: at a at a base minimum level. And that's just
25:17
Speaker 11: not a generalized statement. I mean that's a fact and
25:20
Speaker 11: the fact is that he inherited one NFL player on
25:24
Speaker 11: his roster, and every coach from Don Neil and on
25:28
Speaker 11: out that had preceded him had had at least a
25:31
Speaker 11: minimum of eight players that would eventually go to play
25:33
Speaker 11: in the NFL. So when he got here, he had
25:35
Speaker 11: a start from scratch, throwing COVID, throwing the transfer portal,
25:38
Speaker 11: throwing West Virginia not being quick to respond to nil,
25:44
Speaker 11: and it caused for several seasons of just kind of swimming.
25:48
Speaker 11: And now we're at a point where I think every
25:51
Speaker 11: single Saturday on this schedule that we will be able
25:54
Speaker 11: to go in and we will be able to compete. Now,
25:56
Speaker 11: does that mean you're going to win? Don't know. That's
25:59
Speaker 11: going to come down now to turn and overs and
26:00
Speaker 11: fumbles and interceptions and injuries and who gets hurt when
26:04
Speaker 11: they get hurt and what player gets hurt. So at
26:07
Speaker 11: least though, we're at a point where we can compete,
26:10
Speaker 11: and we'll go from there and see what eventually that means.
26:13
Speaker 3: Got a couple of quick questions via the text line
26:15
Speaker 3: for you. One of those says, have you seen Tony
26:17
Speaker 3: online chatter that there's a possibility that our two pats
26:21
Speaker 3: white and McAfee are considering returning to Mountain your field
26:24
Speaker 3: for the Penn State game? Is there any truth to
26:26
Speaker 3: that that you know of? According to a texture, No.
26:30
Speaker 11: That won't happen as far as Pat McAfee goes, because
26:33
Speaker 11: he has recommitted to College game Day and College game
26:37
Speaker 11: Day isn't going to be in Morgantown on that first Saturday.
26:40
Speaker 11: It's going to be a Fox game, So Pat McAfee
26:42
Speaker 11: definitely won't be.
26:43
Speaker 3: Another question is are the student athletes still going to
26:46
Speaker 3: get free ride scholarships?
26:48
Speaker 11: Yes, scholarship is still part of the deal. It does
26:51
Speaker 11: not include that does not even go into the revenue
26:54
Speaker 11: sharing dollars that they're going to get. And again, I
26:56
Speaker 11: didn't want to glass your eyes over, but scholarships scholarship
27:00
Speaker 11: limits based upon what the settlement or the papers that
27:05
Speaker 11: were filed to court on Friday. Starting next year, scholarship
27:10
Speaker 11: limits are no longer in existence. Now you'll have a
27:14
Speaker 11: roster number of players that you can have. So in
27:17
Speaker 11: football at the level that West Virginia plays, it's been
27:20
Speaker 11: eighty five scholarships. Starting next Junior July one, a school
27:24
Speaker 11: can have up to one hundred and five players on
27:27
Speaker 11: their roster. What it could do is it could extinct
27:31
Speaker 11: walk ons. And these are all the details that are
27:34
Speaker 11: now trying to be figured out. But roster sizes are
27:38
Speaker 11: the new norm, and scholarship limits no longer exist because
27:43
Speaker 11: of these, because of the legal challenges that have been
27:46
Speaker 11: put to the court.
27:47
Speaker 3: And if you want answers to any more of these questions,
27:50
Speaker 3: be sure and join Tony and on all of us
27:51
Speaker 3: will be there on Thursday night over to bal Toyota
27:54
Speaker 3: of Vincenter. And this is again a fundraiser for the
27:57
Speaker 3: United Way of Central West Virginia. What's the best way
27:59
Speaker 3: to get tickets?
27:59
Speaker 11: Tony, that's a good question. I would say just basically
28:03
Speaker 11: Margaret Ann and the gang at the United Way of
28:05
Speaker 11: Central West Virginia. I would just reach out to that,
28:08
Speaker 11: look them up and they'll be able to take care of.
28:10
Speaker 3: You all right, Tony, best of luck Thursday night. I'll
28:13
Speaker 3: be there, and I know Weekly and Kop I think
28:14
Speaker 3: we're all going to be there Thursday, and I'm looking
28:16
Speaker 3: forward to seeing you again. One quick thing, how is
28:20
Speaker 3: three guys going? We got to ask you that.
28:22
Speaker 11: It's going well. It's getting ready to have its birthday.
28:25
Speaker 11: So August of seventeen is when we started, and so
28:30
Speaker 11: we're getting ready for birthday eight tomorrow we're going to
28:33
Speaker 11: I think it's tomorrow, Tuesday, Yeah, tomorrow. We'll release a
28:37
Speaker 11: really good episode with Garrett Green the day before Mountaineer
28:40
Speaker 11: practice starts. So everything's going well. We're five hundred and
28:43
Speaker 11: sixty some episodes in and it's been a lot of fun.
28:46
Speaker 3: All right, Tony, appreciate you taking time out of your
28:49
Speaker 3: schedule to be Here'll see you a Thursday night, man,
28:50
Speaker 3: Thanks a lot.
28:52
Speaker 11: Thank you, Dave, appreciate it.
28:53

29:01

29:05
Speaker 3: a lot of time on sports here because I could
29:06
Speaker 3: spend a whole heck of a lot of time talking sports.
29:08
Speaker 3: But it is amazing, as I pointed out to Tony,
29:12
Speaker 3: and I'll say this and I'll get off the sports thing.
29:14
Speaker 3: As Tony said, the amount of changes in the world
29:18
Speaker 3: of college athletics. I said in the last you know,
29:21
Speaker 3: five to ten years, and he says it wasn't even
29:25
Speaker 3: that long. I mean, I can remember. I'm old, and
29:28
Speaker 3: I can remember. I can remember a famous story and
29:33
Speaker 3: had to do with Chris Webber of that awesome Michigan
29:36
Speaker 3: basketball team in the early nineteen nineties. Chris Webber talked
29:39
Speaker 3: about going to a McDonald's, either on campus or somewhere
29:43
Speaker 3: near campus, and trying to scrape up enough money to
29:48
Speaker 3: buy a happy meal. In the meantime, he saw his jersey,
29:52
Speaker 3: which I believe was number four. He had his number
29:55
Speaker 3: four jersey was selling in the Michigan bookstore for like
30:00
Speaker 3: one hundred bucks. And it wasn't autographed or anything. And
30:04
Speaker 3: that's when, and again we're talking to the early nineties here,
30:06
Speaker 3: that's when he said, Okay, there's something wrong here. They're
30:10
Speaker 3: selling my number. It may not have my name on it,
30:13
Speaker 3: but everybody knew who wore that number. They're selling my
30:17
Speaker 3: number and I'm not getting anything for it, and somebody is.
30:20
Speaker 3: And so I think there's got to be In my opinion,
30:23
Speaker 3: I think there has to be a line drawn somewhere.
30:26
Speaker 3: But I don't. I don't think it's going to change.
30:28
Speaker 3: And as a college football fan, as I am following
30:32
Speaker 3: closely Marshall which is where I went to school, plus
30:36
Speaker 3: WVU and Georgia. You know, I'm a big Georgia fan.
30:38
Speaker 3: Two following those teams and trying to figure out year
30:42
Speaker 3: to year who is going to be playing for them.
30:45
Speaker 3: The old saying goes in baseball, they used to say
30:48
Speaker 3: when it was talk program. So you have to have
30:49
Speaker 3: a program. How do you tell who the players are
30:52
Speaker 3: if you don't have a program. That's pretty much the
30:54
Speaker 3: way it is in college athletics right now with the
30:56
Speaker 3: transfer rule, and it's not going to change. And now
31:01
Speaker 3: basically college sports has become the NFL, it's become the NBA,
31:04
Speaker 3: it's become Major League Baseball even more so, even more so,
31:09
Speaker 3: and more power to these athletes, and I you know,
31:12
Speaker 3: applaud them, think that they were crapped on for a
31:16
Speaker 3: number of years. But now we've kind of gone in
31:19
Speaker 3: the opposite direction. So and it's leaving a lot of
31:23
Speaker 3: college football and college basketball fans kind of cold, to
31:26
Speaker 3: be honest with you, But there's some you know, they're
31:28
Speaker 3: no matter what, they're still going to show up on
31:30
Speaker 3: Saturday at the games to tailgate, or they're going to
31:32
Speaker 3: park in front of their TV and watch it. So

37:30
Speaker 3: Let me get to that text that I started to read.
37:36
Speaker 3: I kind of got ahead of myself. Texas Dave, what
37:38
Speaker 3: is the penalty for candidates that have still still have
37:41
Speaker 3: campaign signs up? Earl Whittington, who lost his race, still
37:45
Speaker 3: has three large signs from more corcol between Saint Albans
37:47
Speaker 3: and spring Hill. They're really as best I know, there
37:52
Speaker 3: really is no penalty for that. I mean, I've seen
37:57
Speaker 3: signs as I travel a lot and a lot through
38:00
Speaker 3: West Virginia, you see signs of candidates that ran like
38:03
Speaker 3: ten years ago that are still up. I mean, the
38:05
Speaker 3: right thing to do, and many candidates have started doing this,
38:09
Speaker 3: many have done it for a number of years, is
38:11
Speaker 3: to get those signs down the night of the election.
38:13
Speaker 3: Matter of fact something it's almost become like a game
38:17
Speaker 3: now who can get their signs down more quickly? And
38:20
Speaker 3: this passed election. In the primary election, Chris Lawrence and
38:23
Speaker 3: I were of course running, you know, we were in
38:24
Speaker 3: the studio here and trying to get a hold of candidates,
38:28
Speaker 3: and a few of them we had difficulty to get
38:30
Speaker 3: in a hold of to talk about their victory or
38:32
Speaker 3: their loss or whatever, because they were out picking up
38:35
Speaker 3: a campaign signs and I hope what happened Doug scaff
38:39
Speaker 3: when he got bit by a snake does not, you know,
38:42
Speaker 3: keep people from wanting to pick up their signs. But no,
38:44
Speaker 3: an answer to the Textras question, I don't know that
38:46
Speaker 3: there is an actual penalty for that, but it's the
38:51
Speaker 3: right thing to do. So no matter who the candidate is,
38:54
Speaker 3: let's try to get those signs down, all right, Texas day,
39:00
Speaker 3: they've kind kind of tired of hearing the both sides crap.
39:04
Speaker 3: Conservatives haven't wished anyone dead, killed or assassinated or blown
39:09
Speaker 3: up the White House. That was Madonna, by the way,
39:11
Speaker 3: says a texture or resort to physically assaulting someone that
39:15
Speaker 3: does not or refuses to agree lockstep with their view opinions,
39:19
Speaker 3: or rhetoric, and not be arrested for any of it.
39:22
Speaker 3: So enough with the both sides, b s says a
39:26
Speaker 3: texture saying both sides is another way of what Hoppy
39:31
Speaker 3: calls what about ism, says a text tex says. Trump
39:36
Speaker 3: is returning to Butler County for a rally to honor
39:40
Speaker 3: the man Corey, who was shot and killed during his
39:43
Speaker 3: July thirteenth rally in Butler, Butler Township on the Butler
39:47
Speaker 3: Farm showgrounds and the two men were injured. Okay, I
39:48
Speaker 3: didn't know that. Like I said, I just saw the
39:51
Speaker 3: headline on the TV and he was returning there. So
39:53
Speaker 3: he is returning to honor the man, the firefighter that bravely.
39:58
Speaker 3: I don't care what your political pursuit, and nobody would
40:00
Speaker 3: say that that guy wasn't a hero for protecting his family.

Speaker 3: Coming up on tomorrow's show, Republican Strategist Greg Thomas will
40:07
Speaker 3: be stopping by lots in the news lately about the
40:10
Speaker 3: KRT bus system in the Canal vut We're going to
40:12
Speaker 3: talk to director Sean Hill about that. As I mentioned,
40:15
Speaker 3: the folks from JUTE Home and Business Security Systems will
40:18
Speaker 3: be here to answer your questions about home security and
40:23
Speaker 3: business security. It's coming up with JUTE on the show tomorrow.
40:26
Speaker 3: So I had some people asked me if I was
40:29
Speaker 3: going to delve into the controversy surrounding the opening ceremonies
40:33
Speaker 3: from the Paris Olympic Games. You know, it dominated social
40:37
Speaker 3: media all weekend and by the way, let me say
40:39
Speaker 3: about the weekend news cycle, it was actually pretty refreshing.
40:44
Speaker 3: Not I mean this was there were some major stories.
40:46
Speaker 3: Don't get me wrong. But you know, two weeks ago
40:48
Speaker 3: we had the former president an assassination attempt. Last week
40:53
Speaker 3: was the is he going to stay in?
40:54
Speaker 14: Is he not?
40:55
Speaker 3: And then we put Joe Mansion in there, and then
40:57
Speaker 3: Biden eventually decided he wasn't going to run. And so
41:01
Speaker 3: it was kind of a slow news weekend compared to
41:03
Speaker 3: what it's been the last two weekends. But anyway, this
41:06
Speaker 3: thing with the ceremonies from the Paris Olympic Games, you know,
41:08
Speaker 3: it dominated social media all weekend with opinions all over
41:12
Speaker 3: the board. It was blasphemous, it was arts, YadA, YadA, YadA.
41:17
Speaker 3: And I'm going to go into full confession mode here
41:21
Speaker 3: and I know this may make me the worst American ever,
41:24
Speaker 3: but here it goes. I couldn't care less about the Olympics.
41:29
Speaker 3: I'm just saying.
41:31
Speaker 14: So.
41:32
Speaker 3: I know, I know, turn in your red, white, and blue.
41:34
Speaker 3: Probably don't like apple pie either, But actually I do
41:37
Speaker 3: love apple pie. But I was not watching the opening
41:42
Speaker 3: ceremonies or any of it, and probably won't. It's just
41:47
Speaker 3: not my thing. It never has been. I've just never
41:49
Speaker 3: been into the Olympics. I know, it's where's your pride?
41:52
Speaker 2: And so on?
41:52
Speaker 3: Well, I just this is not my thing.
41:53
Speaker 14: It never never was.
41:55
Speaker 3: I mean, you probably count on a fifteen second stopwatch
41:58
Speaker 3: or fifteen minutes stop watching out of Olympics. I've watched
42:01
Speaker 3: in my entire life. But it's just not my thing.
42:03
Speaker 3: So I knew what was coming on Saturday or a
42:05
Speaker 3: Friday night, rather didn't. My wife and I watching something else,
42:09
Speaker 3: did not turn it on. But I woke up Saturday
42:11
Speaker 3: morning with everyone losing their collective minds over it one
42:16
Speaker 3: way or the other. And if you want to weigh
42:19
Speaker 3: in on it, text me or call me, that's fine.
42:22
Speaker 3: But again I didn't watch it, and I didn't really
42:24
Speaker 3: even care to go back and watch to see what
42:27
Speaker 3: the controversy was. I read a lot about it, but
42:30
Speaker 3: as far as I going back and watching it, I
42:35
Speaker 3: will say this though, based on what I read but
42:41
Speaker 3: didn't see, it's their country, and it's their belief system,
42:48
Speaker 3: and they can pretty much do what they want. And
42:51
Speaker 3: I'm sure that in fact, in this country, as much
42:55
Speaker 3: as I love my country, we do things daily in
42:57
Speaker 3: this country that offend other countries. So that's just kind
43:01
Speaker 3: of where I am on that, And you can weigh
43:04
Speaker 3: in on it if you want, send me a text
43:06
Speaker 3: or whatever.
43:06
Speaker 2: But I.
43:08
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not really much concerned to me. But if
43:12

47:09

47:14
Speaker 3: I think Doug scaff has probably heard all of those jokes.
47:16
Speaker 3: He's actually joked about the jokes when he's been on
47:18
Speaker 3: my show in the past. All Right, So Hoppy got
47:21
Speaker 3: into this a little bit last week, and I just
47:25
Speaker 3: kind of glazed over it. But this flip in voter
47:28
Speaker 3: registration from Democrat to Republican in two counties that were
47:35
Speaker 3: in the past Democrat strongholds. Talking about Fayette County and
47:39
Speaker 3: where we set right now, Kanawa Counties, and it is
47:44
Speaker 3: it's truly astounding. But I just want to focus on
47:48
Speaker 3: Kanawha County right now and and how historic this is.
47:53
Speaker 3: There are now more Republicans than Democrats in Kanawha County.
47:59
Speaker 3: The numbers forty two thousand, three hundred and fourteen Republicans
48:04
Speaker 3: forty two two hundred and fifty one registered Dems. Now,
48:07
Speaker 3: that's not a whole lot, but that number, in my opinion,
48:13
Speaker 3: and I think others there were a lot smarter than
48:16
Speaker 3: I am, would say that number is probably going to grow.
48:19
Speaker 3: But it is also worth noting that the number of
48:22
Speaker 3: those registering unaffiliated is also rising. And when you see
48:29
Speaker 3: what is going on with both parties nationally, with the
48:35
Speaker 3: extremes taking over extreme left extreme right. You can see
48:39
Speaker 3: why that is. Now that's just an editorial comment.
48:43
Speaker 8: On my part.
48:44
Speaker 3: Now, Jeff Jenkins has a story posted about this at
48:47
Speaker 3: wv metronews dot com. Is actually posted last Thursday when
48:51
Speaker 3: the news of this started to come out, So if
48:53
Speaker 3: you want to go back into the archives you can
48:56
Speaker 3: you can check that out. I know he had hop
48:59
Speaker 3: He had graves On, who is the chair of the
49:02
Speaker 3: Republican Party in Kanawha County. Also Republican Party chair Matt
49:05
Speaker 3: Herridge was on with Hopey last week talking about it.
49:09
Speaker 3: Forty four of West Virginia's fifty five counties are now
49:15
Speaker 3: Republican counties, and Matt Harridge as do. I believe that
49:22
Speaker 3: many others do too. Those numbers are going to continue
49:26
Speaker 3: to rise with people leaving the Democrat Party for the
49:29
Speaker 3: Republican Party. Now again, some are leaving the Democrat Party,
49:33
Speaker 3: maybe some are leaving the Republican Party two to go
49:35
Speaker 3: independent or unaffiliated. But that's the biggest shift that we're
49:39
Speaker 3: seeing right now, is that people are leaving the Democrat
49:42
Speaker 3: Party in droves. And I'm not saying anything. I have
49:45
Speaker 3: Mike Pushkin on the show Republican or I'm sorry Oh
49:48
Speaker 3: my god, he's gonna kill me. Democrat party chair on
49:50
Speaker 3: the show, and he admits that there there's a major problem.
49:55
Speaker 3: And there is a perspective that was pointed out in
50:00
Speaker 3: in Jeff's story that I think is really interesting. Two
50:03
Speaker 3: years ago, two short years ago, Democrats outnumbered Republicans in
50:10
Speaker 3: Kanawa County by forty five hundred. That was two years ago.
50:17
Speaker 3: Let that sink in for a moment. Now, you want
50:21
Speaker 3: to go back a little further statewide, this is statewide Now,
50:25
Speaker 3: heading into the twenty sixteen primary, Democrats had a one
50:31
Speaker 3: hundred eighty eight thousand, seven hundred vote voter advantage over Republicans.
50:39
Speaker 3: That's heading into the primary of twenty sixteen. And now
50:45
Speaker 3: the numbers again, Republicans are up in West Virginia overall
50:49
Speaker 3: by one hundred and twenty six thousand and five hundred
50:53
Speaker 3: and eighty two. And let me go back a little
50:58
Speaker 3: bit further from a historical perspective, Let's go all the
51:06
Speaker 3: way back to nineteen ninety five. Nineteen ninety five, in
51:09
Speaker 3: West Virginia, Democrats were up by three hundred and forty
51:13
Speaker 3: nine thousand. There were three hundred forty nine thousand more
51:17
