- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, the 18th of
- 0:15December. Great to have your company.
- 0:17Hello. Gee, I hope you're going well.
- 0:20I hope your week is looking good as we hit this middle hump day,
- 0:23coming down to the other side of the week to the end, getting
- 0:27even closer to Christmas. And maybe this is even you
- 0:30getting madly prepared to take a bit of time off work to enjoy a
- 0:35bit of a holiday. If that's you all, good luck
- 0:37with the tidying up of loose ends, getting things ready for a
- 0:39bit of a break. And if you are on a boat, as I
- 0:44know probably at least one of you is out there listening with
- 0:46your Starlink connection, I need to warn you that today's not a
- 0:50good day for boating in today's Bible reading.
- 0:53Yep, it is a stormy, stormy reading where things go awfully
- 0:56wrong for our seafaring friends. Well known.
- 0:59The people all survive, but the boat doesn't do so well.
- 1:03But that's enough of a spoiler alert.
- 1:05Let us read the story about Paul on his way to plead his case
- 1:11before those in Rome and all that happens on his journey
- 1:15there. As we read together Acts chapter
- 1:1827. When the time came, we set sail
- 1:31for Italy. Paul and several other prisoners
- 1:34were placed in the custody of a Roman officer named Julius, a
- 1:38captain of the Imperial regiment.
- 1:41Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was also with us.
- 1:45We left on a ship whose home port was Adrenitium on the
- 1:49northwest coast of the province of Asia.
- 1:52It was scheduled to make several stops at ports along the coast
- 1:55of the province the next day. When we docked inside on, Julius
- 2:00was very kind to Paul and let him go ashore to visit his
- 2:03friends so they could provide for his needs.
- 2:07Putting out to sea from there, we encountered strong headwinds
- 2:11that made it difficult to keep the ship on course, so we sailed
- 2:14north of Cyprus between the island and the mainland.
- 2:18Keeping to the open sea, we passed along the coast of
- 2:21Sicilia and Pamphylia, landing in Myra in the province of
- 2:26Lycia. There the commanding officer
- 2:29found an Egyptian ship from Alexandria that was bound for
- 2:32Italy, so he put us on board. We had several days of slow
- 2:38sailing and after great difficulty we finally arrived at
- 2:42Snyders, but the wind was against us, so we sailed across
- 2:46to Crete and along the sheltered coast of the island past the
- 2:50Cape of Salmon. We struggled along the coast
- 2:54with great difficulty and finally arrived at Fair Havens
- 2:59near the town of Lacea. We had lost a lot of time.
- 3:03The weather was becoming dangerous for sea travel because
- 3:06it was so late in the fall, and Paul spoke to the ship's
- 3:09officers about it. Men, he said.
- 3:13I believe there's trouble ahead if we go on shipwreck, loss of
- 3:17cargo and danger to our lives as well.
- 3:21But the officer in charge of the prisoners listened more to the
- 3:24ship's captain and the owner than to Paul.
- 3:27And since Fair Havens was an exposed harbour, a poor place to
- 3:32spend the winter, most of the crew wanted to go on to Phoenix,
- 3:36farther up the coast of Crete, and spend the winter there.
- 3:40Phoenix was a good harbour with only a southwest and NW
- 3:44exposure. When a light wind began blowing
- 3:48from the South, the sailors thought they could make it, so
- 3:51they pulled up anchor and sailed close to the shore of Crete.
- 3:55But the weather changed abruptly, and a wind of typhoon
- 3:59strength called the Nor'easter burst across the island and blew
- 4:04us out to sea. The sailors couldn't turn the
- 4:07ship into the wind, so they gave up and let it run before the
- 4:11Gale. We sailed along the sheltered
- 4:14side of a small island named Corda, where, with great
- 4:18difficulty, we hoisted aboard, the lifeboat being towed behind
- 4:22us. Then the sailors bound ropes
- 4:25around the hull of the ship to strengthen it.
- 4:28They were afraid had been driven across to the sand bars of
- 4:31Sertis off the African coast, so they lowered the sea anchor to
- 4:35slow the ship and were driven before the wind.
- 4:39The next day, as Gale force winds continued to batter the
- 4:43ship, the crew began throwing the cargo overboard.
- 4:48The following day they even took some of the ship's gear and
- 4:50threw it overboard. The terrible storm raged for
- 4:55many days, blotting out the sun and stars, until at last all the
- 5:01hope was gone. No one had eaten for a long
- 5:05time. Finally Paul called the crew
- 5:08together and said, men, he should have listened to me in
- 5:12the 1st place and not left Crete.
- 5:15He would have avoided all this damage and loss.
- 5:18But take courage. None of you will lose your
- 5:21lives, even though the ship will go down.
- 5:25For last night an Angel of the God to whom I belong and to whom
- 5:30I serve stood beside me. And he said, don't be afraid,
- 5:35Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar.
- 5:40What's more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone
- 5:44sailing with you. So take courage, for I believe
- 5:49God it will be just as he said, but we will be shipwrecked on an
- 5:54island. About midnight on the 14th night
- 5:58of the storm, as we were being driven across the Sea of Adria,
- 6:03the sailors sensed land was near.
- 6:05They dropped a weighted line and found that the water was 120
- 6:09feet deep. But a little later they measured
- 6:13again and found it was only 90 feet deep.
- 6:17At this rate, they were afraid we would soon be driven against
- 6:20the rocks along the shore. So they threw out four anchors
- 6:24from the back of the ship and prayed for daylight.
- 6:28Then the sailors tried to abandon the ship.
- 6:30They lowered the lifeboat as though they were going to put
- 6:33out anchors from the front of the ship.
- 6:35But Paul said to the commanding officer and the soldiers, you
- 6:39will all die unless the sailors stay aboard.
- 6:43So the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat and let it drift
- 6:47away. Just as day was dawning.
- 6:50Paul urged everyone to eat. You have been so worried that
- 6:54you haven't touched food for two weeks, he said.
- 6:58Please eat something now for your own good, for not a hair of
- 7:02your heads will perish. Then he took some bread and gave
- 7:06thanks to God before them all and broke off a piece and ate
- 7:10it. Then everyone was encouraged and
- 7:13began to eat, all 276 of us who were on board.
- 7:18After eating, the crew lightened the ship further by throwing the
- 7:21cargo of wheat overboard. When morning dawned, they didn't
- 7:26recognise the coastline, but they saw a Bay with a beach and
- 7:31wondered if they could get to shore by running the ship
- 7:33aground. So they cut off the anchors and
- 7:36left them in the sea. Then they lowered the rudders,
- 7:40raised the foresail and headed towards shore.
- 7:43But they hit a Shoal and ran the ship aground too soon the bow of
- 7:48the ship struck fast, while the stern was repeatedly smashed by
- 7:52the force of the waves and began to break apart.
- 7:56The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to make sure they
- 7:58didn't swim ashore and escape. But the commanding officer
- 8:02wanted to spare Paul, so he didn't let them carry out their
- 8:05plan. Then he ordered all who could
- 8:08swim to jump overboard first and make for land.
- 8:12The others held on to planks or debris from the broken ship so
- 8:16everyone escaped safely to shore.
- 8:29Our Lord, what an incredible story of faith in you.
- 8:34Faith that Paul has that what you have said would come true.
- 8:38And this incredible faith in Paul that we see from the
- 8:41soldiers that when he declares that if anyone takes the
- 8:46lifeboats that all will perish, they act in faith and they cut
- 8:52the ropes to those lifeboats and let them drift away.
- 8:56Oh, Lord, this would have seemed like sheer madness in that
- 8:59moment. But such is faith that we are
- 9:03inspired to do things that would, from the outside, look
- 9:06like sheer madness. Lord, grant us such faith that
- 9:11in the heat of the moment we would hear your voice and that
- 9:16we would listen to you, and we would act in the way that you
- 9:19prompt us, not in the way that the overwhelming forces around
- 9:24us would have us act. Lord, I thank you for your
- 9:29Spirit that you place inside each of us, and I thank You that
- 9:32you use Your Spirit to prompt us and to lead us our Jesus.
- 9:39Attune our hearts to Your Spirit so that as we hear your
- 9:45prompting that we would follow and give us the courage and the
- 9:49faith to act according to your promptings.
- 9:54We are your children and we want to live our lives following You
- 9:59and worshipping you, our loving Heavenly Father.
- 10:04So we pray all of this in the loving name of Jesus, Amen.
