- 0:00Welcome to the doctor-turned-health-coach podcast. My name is Dr.
- 0:03Ashuri, family medicine physician-turned-health-coach.
- 0:08All it takes is a glass of wine.
- 0:12So the concept of weight loss, weight management, fitness, a good metabolic
- 0:19state, often comes down to very, very small things.
- 0:24Many people try to make big changes in their lives, thinking that those big
- 0:28changes are going to give them rapid and drastic results.
- 0:31But when we look at the data, the people who end up sticking with their overall
- 0:36healthy aging goals, their health plans, are the ones who make very small changes,
- 0:43very minor changes, but they stick to those changes.
- 0:46Now, I know I'm speaking in generalities, but try to follow me with this.
- 0:51It might resonate with you.
- 0:53Over the years, I've had many different health coaching clients,
- 0:56And one person stood out to me, a woman who had just passed menopause.
- 1:01So she was 12 months without her last menstrual period, 12 months out from her last menstrual period.
- 1:07And her weight gain was impressive.
- 1:11She was gaining weight. Her mood was OK. Her sleep was OK.
- 1:14She didn't really believe her appetite and nutrition plan had changed all that much.
- 1:20But she was gaining weight. and in many ways it demotivated her from exercising
- 1:26and staying fit and so she also felt like her stamina was getting lower,
- 1:31her muscle mass was getting lower, she felt it in her thighs.
- 1:33And we were trying to figure out what it could be.
- 1:37She hadn't changed much so her diet was the same, she had the same routine,
- 1:41kids were out, she had been divorced for many years or I don't remember maybe
- 1:45her partner had passed away but either way she had a pretty normal routine,
- 1:50she would go to work, she had a volunteer gig with some animals in a shelter,
- 1:53and she would come home and have one glass of wine,
- 1:56one simple glass of wine.
- 1:59For whatever reason, it's possible that her metabolism had changed with age.
- 2:04Maybe the menopause state had made some changes.
- 2:08But she really had a hard time with her weight.
- 2:12So one thing that we tried is, hey, let's get rid of this glass of wine.
- 2:17In fact, it was a very difficult thing to get rid of.
- 2:19Both of us realized. We thought it would be easy and she didn't think it was all that.
- 2:24After a few trial and errors, she ended up switching from the wine,
- 2:30the glass of wine, to some sort of a kombucha drink that had quite a bit of calories.
- 2:36I would say equivalent calories, probably not as much. So her weight didn't change that much.
- 2:40We went back to the drawing board and we said, all right, so maybe it's not
- 2:44the alcohol content of it.
- 2:45Maybe it is the calorie content of it. So we switched from this kombucha drink,
- 2:49which I don't remember. it was probably like 100 and some calories,
- 2:52which is quite a lot for kombucha.
- 2:54Most kombucha you can actually get for 25 or 35 calories.
- 2:58We switched her to a tea at night. And so we had her go shopping for some expensive
- 3:03teas. She found an online tea store.
- 3:05She got all this tea shipped to her house. And she really enjoyed that.
- 3:10She really, really enjoyed the switch. And guess what?
- 3:13The weight came off. Not in the beginning.
- 3:16After a few months, it came off. She booked another time with me.
- 3:20And she was just ecstatic.
- 3:22She was ecstatic that all it took was probably around, I don't know,
- 3:27150, 180 calories of wine that she was having to start seeing the weight come off.
- 3:34And guys, that's the whole point of this podcast.
- 3:37Many times, if we can keep all things equal, because remember when she switched
- 3:42from the wine to the kombucha, she did make a switch, but the calories were the same.
- 3:48So if we can keep all things the same but we cut out that one little thing that one little item.
- 3:55We can start seeing some changes and for her of course
- 3:58it wasn't just about the weight i was monitoring her metabolic health i was
- 4:02monitoring her overall blood sugars insulin levels and some her triglycerides
- 4:08were going through the roof if i remember correctly and so we were working on
- 4:11a lot of different things and all of these things really did change they really
- 4:15really changed and And that's, I would say that's all it took.
- 4:18By no means was it easy and it was a long process and it took probably a year
- 4:22for those numbers to change.
- 4:24But the fact that they did and the fact that all it took is one change,
- 4:28but that one consistent change that you don't compensate for in some other hidden
- 4:32way, to me, is a very encouraging idea.
- 4:39I hope you find these podcast episodes helpful and me sharing some of these
- 4:43lessons that I learned for my health coaching clients.
