- 0:11Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:12It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, South Africa's
- 0:15multi-award winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:18This week I'm speaking to Lloyd Uren from Brenthurst Wealth in Granger Bay.
- 0:22Lloyd, you sent me a piece which is interesting because the headline is how
- 0:26diversified is your portfolio actually?
- 0:28And I got to thinking about people that perhaps have a lot of what might be called
- 0:33clutter in their portfolio.
- 0:34They've got a bit of this here, a single stock here, an ETF there, a couple of
- 0:39different countries.
- 0:40But that doesn't mean to say that you are properly diversified.
- 0:44I think that's one of the messages you're trying to get across here.
- 0:49Thanks for having me on the show, Lindsay.
- 0:50Pleasure.
- 0:52Yeah, definitely.
- 0:53I think there's a lot of misconceptions around what diversification actually is.
- 0:57even get Clients sometimes who come in and say, I've got an investment with these
- 1:03three different
- 1:04platforms, so I'm diversified, but they're really the same investment in three
- 1:08different places, which is a different can of worms.
- 1:10But if we look specifically into sort of the investments and the holdings of a
- 1:16portfolio, there is
- 1:17kind of an idea that if you just have a few buckets of funds or shares or index
- 1:23funds,
- 1:24that you're sort of… well diversified and in the right places, but actually we tend
- 1:29to find that there's a lot of over-concentration
- 1:31and overlap between a lot of these funds.
- 1:35So really we have more of a concentrated risk rather than a diversified portfolio.
- 1:42Yes, you talk about concentration.
- 1:44How does concentration work?
- 1:46I mean, when I think of concentration, I think of the stocks that drove the NASDAQ
- 1:50last year, for example, a few
- 1:52AI-related stocks that pulled the index up.
- 1:55but behind left a lot of other stocks trailing.
- 1:58So maybe you could explain it from your point of view.
- 2:01Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:02So we look at the NASDAQ 100 or the S&P 500, and those kind of outline the top
- 2:07performing companies in the
- 2:09US.
- 2:10But a lot of that is driven by those indexes are market weighted, which just
- 2:16kind of takes
- 2:17every company at their position of growth and how big they are.
- 2:23So the likes of the Magnificent Seven, your NVIDIAs, your Googles and Apples,
- 2:27they kind of over-inflate those
- 2:30indexes because their value just continues to grow astronomically in relation to the
- 2:34rest of the 493
- 2:36companies.
- 2:38So a lot of the time, the performance is getting pulled up by those.
- 2:42But if we say we have an investment in a NASDAQ 100 ETF and an S&P 500 ETF and then
- 2:49even
- 2:49MSCI World Fund ETF, you kind of...
- 2:53are pooling the same seven companies with the rest all in one bucket.
- 2:58And so what really looks like a globally diversified portfolio is actually kind of
- 3:0320% to 30%
- 3:05in the same seven companies.
- 3:07It's interesting, though, because some people say, but it doesn't matter because
- 3:10it's going up.
- 3:11I want to be in a NASDAQ ETF or a semiconductor ETF fund, whatever it is.
- 3:18So it doesn't matter because it's doing well.
- 3:21but what you're I think saying again, because you give a great example, you say
- 3:25the deeper problem is the recovery maths.
- 3:27A portfolio that falls 33%, you say, needs to rise 50% just to break even.
- 3:34So the downside risk is as great as the upside potential in many cases, especially
- 3:40when markets are
- 3:40elevated.
- 3:42Absolutely.
- 3:43And I think the trap that a lot of people fall into is the momentum trap where if
- 3:48it's going up, it's never going to stop going up,
- 3:50surely.
- 3:50So...
- 3:51why not take more risk why not put more on but as soon as the opposite becomes true
- 3:55that downward momentum is can be as
- 3:57detrimental as the upward momentum can be beneficial so really what we are trying to
- 4:02do as much as you know clients will say why didn't you
- 4:04take more risk when we're in a in a bull run it's why did you take so much risk in
- 4:09a bear run we really are
- 4:11trying to play in sort of the the comfortable bracket in between where we're
- 4:15making reasonable returns on an ongoing basis
- 4:18rather than writing.
- 4:19all the momentum and then having to recover from the downward slopes when they
- 4:24eventually do come.
- 4:25Really good protection comes from really good diversification.
- 4:28Tell us what your idea of genuine protection looks like.
- 4:33Well, first, we try to not look at a benchmark of an index, for example,
- 4:38because that's really
- 4:39just a scorecard of what that sector of the economy might be doing.
- 4:44What we're really looking at is to look at something more based in the reality of
- 4:48what a client needs.
- 4:50So for that, we're typically looking at, first of all, inflation beating,
- 4:54especially when we look in present terms, when we look long-term
- 4:56towards retirement plans and saving for I don't know whether it's kids' education or
- 5:03for future purchases like a home.
- 5:06We are looking to kind of make maybe an inflation plus three or plus five and
- 5:11really working with the type
- 5:13of risk profile that is going to get them to where they need to be but not kind of
- 5:18spook them from the risk that needs to be
- 5:20taken to achieve those things.
- 5:22So we're looking to use a nice balanced mix of sort of funds that will first
- 5:27reduce the risk but also have the...
- 5:29the opportunities within it to capture the growth that we would need to achieve those
- 5:34goals.
- 5:35So, we're looking at your income funds for sort of steady returns.
- 5:38You're looking at balanced funds to move in and out of various market areas and
- 5:43positions so that they can capture
- 5:46market share, but also sort of risk protect during downturns.
- 5:51And then we look at our more volatile equity funds, which can capture the most
- 5:55growth if we use them properly and manage them during
- 5:58downturns.
- 5:59So what you're saying really is every client is different and therefore every
- 6:02diversification structure must be different as well.
- 6:05And that has to be tailored to the needs and the aspirations of the individual
- 6:10client.
- 6:11Absolutely.
- 6:12I mean, for someone in their sort of 30s and 40s who are still accumulating their
- 6:17wealth, the opportunity to
- 6:19take on more risk over a longer period of time while the time is on your side is
- 6:23more likely what a strategy will be in
- 6:26that case for a client.
- 6:27Whereas someone who's...
- 6:28In their 60s and their 70s, you've moved into their living annuities or aren't
- 6:32working anymore.
- 6:33And their capital that they have accumulated is now their source of income.
- 6:38We really do need to be more in a moderate and protective mindset for them and
- 6:43helping them capture
- 6:45income on an ongoing basis rather than trying to grow the capital.
- 6:48We want to preserve it and deplete it as slowly as possible.
- 6:51Have you had an example of a client that's come in that has an existing portfolio but
- 6:55has heard about Brenta's Wealth, wants you to… sit down with them
- 6:58and have a look at it.
- 6:59And you have a look at it and it's completely inappropriate.
- 7:01As I said earlier on, I'm not being unkind in the case of this example, but is it a
- 7:07cluttered
- 7:08portfolio you find?
- 7:10I'd be cluttered other times.
- 7:12It's just completely conflated the wrong direction.
- 7:16I've had people come in with a living annuity that was purely in tech stocks, a
- 7:21tech stock ETF, and I kind of
- 7:23panicked because I saw obviously they're making.
- 7:2620 to 25 percent returns but again with the the momentum trap you're thinking if
- 7:32this gets one market
- 7:33correction this could be going to like five percent in the next year while
- 7:37they're drawing quite a large amount of income from it
- 7:41so yes when we have clients like that that come in we do try to take a take a deep
- 7:47breath and explain
- 7:48why while the thinking is not incorrect the the way it plays out in the real world
- 7:53is something we're more concerned about and protecting that
- 7:56The value of their wealth while they're in a more risk-off period of their life term
- 8:01is why we would make certain changes
- 8:03or explain what different things we would do for them.
- 8:07Interesting stuff, Lloyd.
- 8:07Thank you very much for your time.
