- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Radio Eye's Children's Story Hour. As
- 0:04Speaker 1: a reminder, Radio Eye is a reading service intended for
- 0:07Speaker 1: people who are blind or have other disabilities that make
- 0:11Speaker 1: it difficult to read printed material. Today we will be
- 0:14Speaker 1: reading from various books on the characters Frog and Friends.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And your reader today is Diane. Our first book is
- 0:24Speaker 1: called Frog and Friends and it was published by Sleeping
- 0:30Speaker 1: Bear Press. It has a copyright year of 2011, and
- 0:36Speaker 1: the author is Eve Bunton. Frog goes up, up, up.
- 0:40Speaker 1: The wind made ripples on Frog's pond. When he woke
- 0:43Speaker 1: up from his sleep, he saw something floating on the water,
- 0:47Speaker 1: something he had never seen before. It was big, big.
- 0:51Speaker 1: It was orange. It had a tail. Frog called his friends.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Come see, there's a thing in my pond. It does
- 0:58Speaker 1: not talk. It does not move. It just lies there
- 1:01Speaker 1: on the water. I think it's a big egg, maybe
- 1:04Speaker 1: a hippopotamus egg, Rabbit said. We do not have any
- 1:08Speaker 1: hippopotamuses here, Frog told her. I think it's a big,
- 1:12Speaker 1: big bubble, Possum said. Frog shook his head. Who ever
- 1:17Speaker 1: heard of an orange bubble? I think it is humongous seed,
- 1:21Speaker 1: Raccoon said. I think it is a thing with a long, ugly,
- 1:25Speaker 1: skinny tail, Squirrel said. Frog swam closer. Pull its long, ugly,
- 1:31Speaker 1: skinny tail, squirrel said. Then see what happens. Do not,
- 1:35Speaker 1: possum advised. It might do something bad. Be brave, squirrel urged.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Frog swam closer. He took hold of the thing's tail.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Just then the wind came strong. It skidded thing across
- 1:50Speaker 1: the pond. Suddenly thing rose up, up, up. Let go,
- 1:55Speaker 1: let go of the tail, rabbit called. The frog was
- 1:58Speaker 1: too far above the pond. He was scared to let go.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Rabbit ran for the long, ugly, skinny tail and caught it.
- 2:05Speaker 1: She swam behind frog. They went up, up, up. Then
- 2:09Speaker 1: squirrel ran and swam behind rabbit. Then possum. Thing began
- 2:13Speaker 1: to sink down, down, down. Possum's feet were on the ground.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Then squirrels, then rabbits, then frogs. They fell in a froggy, rabbit-y, squirrely,
- 2:23Speaker 1: possum-y heap. Thing started to rise again. It bumped into
- 2:27Speaker 1: the oak tree and bang! It was the loudest bang
- 2:31Speaker 1: in the world. Drifting down from the oak tree were
- 2:35Speaker 1: little pieces of Thing. We killed it, Frog moaned. Oh,
- 2:39Speaker 1: that is so sad. We will have a funeral, Rabbit said.
- 2:43Speaker 1: A nice one. To show we are sorry, Frog added.
- 2:47Speaker 1: They dug a small hole under the oak tree and
- 2:49Speaker 1: buried all the little bits of Thing. Then they held...
- 2:53Speaker 1: paused and sang a sorry song. I wonder what thing was,
- 2:57Speaker 1: Rabbit asked. Frog shook his head. I suppose we will
- 3:02Speaker 1: never know. Frog's Pretty Blue Scarf Raccoon came by Frog's home.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I was told you have a bad cold, she said.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I knitted this pretty blue scarf for you. It will
- 3:14Speaker 1: keep you warm and help your cold. Oh, thank you,
- 3:17Speaker 1: Frog said. It will be perfect. But it was not perfect.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Frog tried to wrap it around his neck. But I
- 3:25Speaker 1: have no neck, Frog said to himself, and I am
- 3:28Speaker 1: too slippery. The scarf slipped up to cover his face. Help, help,
- 3:33Speaker 1: I cannot breathe. Then it slipped over his eyes. Help, help,
- 3:37Speaker 1: now I cannot see. I will give this pretty blue
- 3:40Speaker 1: scarf to my friend Rabbit. There is nothing wasted that
- 3:45Speaker 1: you give to a friend. Oh, thank you, Rabbit said.
- 3:49Speaker 1: This will be perfect. She wore the scarf all day,
- 3:53Speaker 1: but it was not perfect. My own fur is so
- 3:56Speaker 1: soft and cozy. This pretty blue scarf makes me too hot.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I will give it to my friend Squirrel. He will
- 4:03Speaker 1: look spiffy in it. Squirrel did look spiffy in it.
- 4:06Speaker 1: This is perfect, he said. But it was not perfect.
- 4:10Speaker 1: The pretty blue scarf is scratchy, he said. It makes
- 4:14Speaker 1: me itch. I know I will give it to my
- 4:16Speaker 1: friend Possum. She can cuddle her babies in it. Oh,
- 4:19Speaker 1: thank you, Possum said. This will be perfect. She tucked
- 4:23Speaker 1: her babies in the pretty blue scarf, but it was
- 4:27Speaker 1: not perfect. Her babies did not like it one bit.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Let us out, let us out, they squeaked. Help, help,
- 4:34Speaker 1: we are trapped. They squeaked and squealed and bit their
- 4:39Speaker 1: mother and each other. Oh dear, Possum said, untucking them.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I know, I will give the pretty blue scarf to Frog.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I hear he has a bad cold. Frog was surprised
- 4:50Speaker 1: when Possum came. Thank you, Possum, he said, but I
- 4:54Speaker 1: am too slippery to wear a pretty blue scarf, and
- 4:57Speaker 1: I have no neck. A scarf will not stay where
- 5:00Speaker 1: I put it. Hmm, Possum said. Let me think. She
- 5:05Speaker 1: put the scarf on Frog. She tied the long ends
- 5:08Speaker 1: across Frog's fat belly. There, she said, now will stay
- 5:13Speaker 1: where you put it. Thank you, Frog said. You are
- 5:16Speaker 1: so clever. Possum nodded. That is true. I am glad
- 5:19Speaker 1: I gave it to you. There's nothing wasted that you
- 5:22Speaker 1: give to a friend. That is what I always say,
- 5:26Speaker 1: Frog told her. When Possum left, he sat down and
- 5:29Speaker 1: wrote a thank you note to Raccoon. I feel better already,
- 5:32Speaker 1: he wrote. I am wearing the pretty blue scarf and
- 5:35Speaker 1: it is perfect. Absolutely perfect. Frog and Hippo. Frog was
- 5:42Speaker 1: resting on a lily pad when he heard a noise. Crunch, crunch, clomp, clomp, crunch, crunch.
- 5:48Speaker 1: He hopped quickly into his pond and peered over the edge.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Something was coming. Something big. Hello, a big voice said. Hello,
- 5:59Speaker 1: frog stammered. Who are you? I am hippopotamus, frog quaked.
- 6:05Speaker 1: This must be the biggest animal in the world. He
- 6:07Speaker 1: has heard of hippopotamuses, but this was the first one
- 6:11Speaker 1: he had seen. Oh no, he thought. He has come
- 6:14Speaker 1: for his egg, which he killed and buried. Frog took
- 6:17Speaker 1: a deep breath. If you have come for your egg, Hippopotamus,
- 6:20Speaker 1: we killed it. We did not mean to. We are
- 6:24Speaker 1: very sorry. I do not know what you mean, Hippopotamus said.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I do not like eggs. I am a mammal. Oh,
- 6:32Speaker 1: Frog was not sure what that meant, but he was
- 6:35Speaker 1: happy that Hippopotamus was not angry. He was so big.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Just call me Hippo, Hippopotamus said. I live in town
- 6:42Speaker 1: in the little zoo. Someone left my cage open. I
- 6:46Speaker 1: ran away to see the world. Then I saw your pond.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I like ponds. May I join you? Of course. Frog
- 6:53Speaker 1: moved over. Hippo waddled in. He was so big, he
- 6:57Speaker 1: filled the pond. Hippo closed his eyes. Lovely. Frog could
- 7:02Speaker 1: not even stretch his legs. Will you stay long, he asked. Hmm,
- 7:07Speaker 1: Hippo said. This is so nice. I think I will
- 7:10Speaker 1: stay forever. Frog gulped. But there is not room for
- 7:14Speaker 1: both of us. Oh, you are so small. I think
- 7:16Speaker 1: we will both fit. Frog did not want to share
- 7:20Speaker 1: his pond. How could he swim with Big Hippo in
- 7:22Speaker 1: the water? He liked to dance around his pond in
- 7:25Speaker 1: the moonlight with no one to watch. How could he
- 7:28Speaker 1: do that if Hippo stayed forever? How could he have
- 7:31Speaker 1: quiet time for his nap? He did not want to
- 7:34Speaker 1: tell Hippo to go away. That would be rude. Frog
- 7:37Speaker 1: looked up. Geese were flying south for winter. Oh, yes,
- 7:41Speaker 1: Frog thought. Hippo, he said. Soon it will be winter. Look,
- 7:45Speaker 1: these geese are flying south. The pond will be covered
- 7:48Speaker 1: with ice. It will be so cold. I will be
- 7:51Speaker 1: having my winter sleep in the mud on the bottom.
- 7:54Speaker 1: But you are too big to cover yourself with that mud.
- 7:57Speaker 1: There will be ice, ice, ice all around you. Oh my,
- 8:02Speaker 1: Hippo said. You are right and I hate to be cold.
- 8:05Speaker 1: He shivered and the pond water sloshed over the site.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Ants ran for cover. They do keep my pond warm
- 8:12Speaker 1: at the little zoo, Hippo said, and they give me
- 8:14Speaker 1: warm straw to lie in. It is pretty nice back there.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Sometimes you have to run away to see what the
- 8:20Speaker 1: world is like, Frog said, but sometimes you are happy
- 8:23Speaker 1: to go home. That is true, Hippo said, and I
- 8:26Speaker 1: liked being with you, but I think I will go
- 8:29Speaker 1: back now. Goodbye, Frog said. Nice to meet you. Then
- 8:33Speaker 1: happy once more, he swam round and round in his pond.
- 8:37Speaker 1: After that, he took a nap. Our next story is
- 8:41Speaker 1: titled Frog and Friends, Frog's Flying Adventure. And the book
- 8:47Speaker 1: was published by Sleeping Bear Press. It has a copyright
- 8:52Speaker 1: year of 2012. And the author is Eve Bunton. A
- 8:57Speaker 1: Flower for Frog. Frog was standing on his rock when
- 9:00Speaker 1: he saw something red. It was in the long grass.
- 9:04Speaker 1: What is that, Frog wondered. He hopped over to check.
- 9:08Speaker 1: It was a pretty red flower growing close to his pond.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Just to look at it made Frog happy. Come and
- 9:14Speaker 1: see Flower, he told his friends. Isn't she pretty? Oh yes,
- 9:19Speaker 1: his friends liked her as much as he did. Her
- 9:22Speaker 1: name is Flower, he told them. Chameleon sighed. That is
- 9:26Speaker 1: a pretty name. It is easy to say. My name
- 9:29Speaker 1: is hard to say. We like it, Little Jumping Mouse
- 9:32Speaker 1: told him. It may be French, Frog said. How did
- 9:36Speaker 1: Flower get here? Raccoon asked. They thought about it. Maybe
- 9:40Speaker 1: a friend of Frog's brought it and left it there
- 9:42Speaker 1: for him, Rabbit said. I left a carrot at my
- 9:45Speaker 1: friend's house this morning. Squirrel scratched his ear. Maybe a
- 9:50Speaker 1: bird dropped a seed and Flower grew. Or maybe it
- 9:53Speaker 1: was magic, Frog said. Frog took good care of Flower.
- 9:58Speaker 1: He gave her water every day. I know you need water,
- 10:01Speaker 1: he told her. Frogs do too. The grass grew thick
- 10:04Speaker 1: around her. Frog cleared it away. Now you can feel
- 10:08Speaker 1: the sun, he told her. Every morning, he told Flower
- 10:12Speaker 1: good morning. Every night, he told her good night. It
- 10:14Speaker 1: was like having a new friend. But then something bad happened.
- 10:20Speaker 1: The leaves on Flower began to droop. She was not
- 10:23Speaker 1: bright red anymore. Frog was so worried he could not eat.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Flies and moths and no sims flew across his pond,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and he did not try to catch them. He thought
- 10:33Speaker 1: about Flower. The next day her edges were brown. She
- 10:37Speaker 1: had lost most of her petals. All his friends came
- 10:41Speaker 1: to visit her. We should sing to her, Little Jumping
- 10:44Speaker 1: Mouse said. Singing might make her well again. They gathered
- 10:47Speaker 1: around her and sang a get-well song. But Flower just stood,
- 10:52Speaker 1: bent and almost bare. I am so sad, Frog said.
- 10:56Speaker 1: What more can I do for her? Nothing, Raccoon said.
- 11:00Speaker 1: She has had her joy time. Now her time has passed.
- 11:04Speaker 1: The little possums began to cry. Then Squirrels took down
- 11:08Speaker 1: and said, Wait, Flower has left something for you, Frog.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Frog wiped his eyes. What is it? It is a
- 11:15Speaker 1: little flower. It has just started to grow. Soon it
- 11:18Speaker 1: will be as big as Flower was. They all peered down.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, Frog said. Thank you, Flower. I will
- 11:26Speaker 1: take good care of your little one. I will give
- 11:28Speaker 1: her water and lots of sun. I will speak to
- 11:31Speaker 1: her morning and night. He smiled at his friends. What
- 11:35Speaker 1: is her name? Chameleon asked. I hope it is a
- 11:37Speaker 1: nice name. It is Little Flower, Frog said. And I
- 11:42Speaker 1: love her already. Frog flies. Sometimes Seagull flew over Frog's pond.
- 11:49Speaker 1: When he did, he stopped to float and talk. It
- 11:52Speaker 1: must be nice to be able to fly, Frog said. Yes,
- 11:56Speaker 1: I go where I want. I see the world, said Seagull.
- 11:59Speaker 1: There are things I want to see, Frog said. I
- 12:02Speaker 1: want to see a cow and a horse. I want
- 12:04Speaker 1: to see lots of things, but they are far from
- 12:07Speaker 1: my pond. I can take you, Seagull said. Here, get
- 12:11Speaker 1: on my back. Really? Will it be safe? Frog asked. Absolutely.
- 12:16Speaker 1: I have been flying for years. I have never had
- 12:19Speaker 1: an accident. All right, this will be an adventure, Frog said.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Frog climbed on Seagull's back. Raccoon saw them take off.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Come back, Frog, she yelled. Frogs do not fly. Frog waved.
- 12:34Speaker 1: This one does, he shouted. They were going up and up. Oh,
- 12:39Speaker 1: This was not good at all. Frog clung to Seagull's feathers.
- 12:43Speaker 1: You are pulling my feathers. It hurts, Seagull yelled. Be careful.
- 12:47Speaker 1: You're going too fast, Frog yelled back. Look out for
- 12:51Speaker 1: that tree. You're going to hit it. If you are
- 12:53Speaker 1: my friend, put me down. I do not like this.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I'm going to be sick. I am sliding off. Frog
- 12:58Speaker 1: wrapped his long legs around Seagull. He had never been
- 13:02Speaker 1: so afraid. They flew over fields. Look down, Seagull shouted.
- 13:08Speaker 1: There's a horse, look, there's a cow. Yes, yes, Frog screamed.
- 13:12Speaker 1: He had closed his eyes tight. He had opened them
- 13:15Speaker 1: a little and looked down. A horse, a cow. His
- 13:19Speaker 1: stomach hurt. We will go back now, Seagull said. Yes, yes,
- 13:23Speaker 1: Frog said, back. There is your pond, Seagull told him.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Frog took his first deep breath. Thank goodness. His pond
- 13:31Speaker 1: was the nicest thing he had ever seen. Seagull skimmed down.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Frog slid off his back. His legs shook. He bent
- 13:39Speaker 1: over and kissed the ground. Now you have seen a
- 13:42Speaker 1: cow and a horse, Seagull told him. Frog nodded. Thank you, Seagull.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Thank you for the nice ride. You are welcome. Seagull
- 13:50Speaker 1: flew away. All Frog's friends were waiting. Thank goodness, Little
- 13:55Speaker 1: Jumping Mouse told him. We were worried, Possum came and
- 13:59Speaker 1: kissed his cheek. Did you see a lot of interesting things?
- 14:03Speaker 1: Oh yes, Frog tried to remember her. Was the black
- 14:07Speaker 1: animal a cow or a horse? Was the brown one
- 14:09Speaker 1: a horse or a cow? It didn't matter. He had
- 14:12Speaker 1: seen them both. He had been on a great flying adventure,
- 14:16Speaker 1: and now he was home safely. Life was good. Sleepy time, Frog.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Frog sat on his rock. Are you all right, Frog?
- 14:25Speaker 1: Possum asked. I could not sleep last night or the
- 14:28Speaker 1: night before. Raccoon looked worried. Why? I do not know,
- 14:33Speaker 1: Frog said. We will have to do something, Squirrel told him.
- 14:37Speaker 1: They went away. When his friends came back that night,
- 14:40Speaker 1: Rabbit brought a cup of tea. It is carrot tea,
- 14:44Speaker 1: she told Frog. It will help you sleep. Thank you,
- 14:47Speaker 1: Frog said. Possum brought a book. It was called Sleepytime Stories.
- 14:52Speaker 1: My little possums love these stories, she said. If you
- 14:56Speaker 1: read them at night, you will sleep, I promise. Thank you,
- 15:00Speaker 1: Frog said. I brought a lullaby, Little Jumping Mouse said.
- 15:04Speaker 1: What is a lullaby, Frog asked. It is a go-to
- 15:08Speaker 1: sleep song. It will make you fall asleep and dream
- 15:11Speaker 1: pretty dreams. I dream of chocolate. Thank you, Frog said.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I will rub your feet, Chameleon said, if that is okay. Yes,
- 15:20Speaker 1: thank you, Frog said. Possibly for to watch. You have
- 15:24Speaker 1: very pretty feet, she told Frog. I have been told so,
- 15:28Speaker 1: Frog agreed. I brought a bowl of bumblebee stew, squirrel said.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I made it myself. It may not make you sleep
- 15:36Speaker 1: or dream pretty dreams, but you will not be hungry
- 15:39Speaker 1: if you are awake. Good idea, frog said. It smells
- 15:43Speaker 1: so good. They sat together on the grass in the
- 15:46Speaker 1: light of the moon and the stars. Frog passed around
- 15:49Speaker 1: the carrot tea. Possum read softly. Softly, she turned the pages.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Little jumping mouse sang a lullaby. Lovely, lovely, frog whispered.
- 16:00Speaker 1: A little breeze came to listen, then drifted on. It
- 16:03Speaker 1: was so good to have good friends. Frog looked around.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Possum was asleep. Her little possums were asleep. Raccoon was asleep.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Squirrel was asleep. Rabbit was asleep. Chameleon was asleep. Dark
- 16:18Speaker 1: green on the dark green grass. Little jumping mouse was asleep.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Her whiskers twitched. She is dreaming of chocolate, Frog thought.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Frog ate some of the delicious bumblebee stew. He yawned
- 16:30Speaker 1: a big, wide yawn. Then he went to sleep, too.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Our next stories are about the character Pete. And our
- 16:39Speaker 1: first one is called Pete the Kitty in the Case
- 16:42Speaker 1: of the Hiccups. It was published by Harper and imprint
- 16:47Speaker 1: of HarperCollins Publishers. It has a copyright year of 2019.
- 16:50Speaker 1: The author is Jane Steen. Hiccup! Oh, no. Pete has
- 16:57Speaker 1: the hiccups. Hiccup! Hiccup! How do you stop the hiccups?
- 17:01Speaker 1: Pete asked Grumpy Toad. How do I stop my hiccups?
- 17:05Speaker 1: I know, says Grumpy Toad. You stand on one foot.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Pete stands on one foot. Hiccup. Pete still has the hiccups.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Pete asked Callie. How do I stop my hiccups? I know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: says Callie. You stand on one foot and hop up
- 17:22Speaker 1: and down. Pete stands on one foot. He hops up
- 17:25Speaker 1: and down. Hiccup. Hiccup. Pete still has the hiccups. Pete
- 17:31Speaker 1: asks Gus, how do I stop my hiccups? I know,
- 17:34Speaker 1: says Gus. You stand on one foot and hop up
- 17:37Speaker 1: and down and sing a song. Pete stands on one foot.
- 17:41Speaker 1: He hops up and down. He sings a song. Hiccup, hiccup, hiccup.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Pete still has the hiccups. Pete asks Bob, how do
- 17:50Speaker 1: I stop my hiccups? I know, says Bob. You stand
- 17:55Speaker 1: on one foot and hop up and down and sing
- 17:57Speaker 1: a song and rub your belly, asks Bob. Pete does it. Hiccup.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Nothing is working. Pete still has the hiccups. Go ask mom,
- 18:08Speaker 1: says Bob. Pete asks mom, how do I stop my hiccups?
- 18:12Speaker 1: I know, says mom. You take a deep breath. Pete
- 18:17Speaker 1: takes a deep breath. Hold your breath and blow it out,
- 18:20Speaker 1: says mom. Pete holds his breath. He blows his breath out.
- 18:25Speaker 1: That's it, Pete asks. That's it, says Mom. Pete waits,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and he waits, and he waits. The heat cups are gone.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Moms are so smart. Our next story is called Pete
- 18:39Speaker 1: the Cat's Scary Cat, and it was published by Harper,
- 18:42Speaker 1: an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. It has a copyright year
- 18:46Speaker 1: of 2024, and the authors are Kimberly and James Dean.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Pete the cat loves stories. Pete loves funny stories. Pete
- 18:56Speaker 1: loves bedtime stories. And Pete really loves true stories. But
- 19:04Speaker 1: Pete has never heard a scary story. So one cold
- 19:07Speaker 1: dark night, Bob and Pete sit by a campfire. Do
- 19:10Speaker 1: you want to hear a spooky, creepy, scary story? Bob
- 19:13Speaker 1: asks Pete. That sounds groovy, says Pete. Bob tells a
- 19:18Speaker 1: story about a monster with seven eyes and spaghetti arms.
- 19:21Speaker 1: The monster even has two heads and only comes out
- 19:24Speaker 1: in the dark. Boo! bob teases good googly moogly pete
- 19:30Speaker 1: gulps when bob's story ends pete is a little scared
- 19:33Speaker 1: but he says i love that story bob and pete
- 19:37Speaker 1: walk to the house look up bob tells pete the
- 19:40Speaker 1: monster seven eyes are in the sky pete is a
- 19:44Speaker 1: little scared but he says those are just fireflies pete
- 19:48Speaker 1: catches one When they get home, something smells yummy. It
- 19:52Speaker 1: is dinner time. Bob looks at his plate. Are these
- 19:56Speaker 1: the monster's arms? Bob jokes. Pete is a little scared,
- 20:00Speaker 1: but he says, this is just spaghetti. Yum, Pete's favorite.
- 20:05Speaker 1: After dinner, Bob and Pete watch television. Look at the
- 20:09Speaker 1: monster's two heads, Bob laughs. Pete is a little scared,
- 20:13Speaker 1: but he says, that's just mom and dad. It is bedtime,
- 20:17Speaker 1: but it is dark. Pete is all alone. He is
- 20:21Speaker 1: really scared now. Suddenly, Pete hears a noise. He sees
- 20:25Speaker 1: a dark shadow and grabs a flashlight. Pete shines the
- 20:28Speaker 1: light at the shadow. Good googly moogly. Bob, Pete asks,
- 20:33Speaker 1: what are you doing here? I guess I was a
- 20:36Speaker 1: little scared too, Bob says. It's okay to be scared sometimes,
- 20:41Speaker 1: Pete tells Bob. You are right, Bob says. Plus, monsters
- 20:45Speaker 1: aren't real. Absolutely not, Pete replies. Bob and Pete still
- 20:50Speaker 1: enjoy spooky, creepy, scary stories in the dark. But now
- 20:54Speaker 1: they are a little scared together. Our next book is
- 21:00Speaker 1: titled Pete the Cat and the Cool Caterpillar. And it
- 21:03Speaker 1: was published by Harper and imprinted HarperCollins Publishers. It has
- 21:07Speaker 1: a copyright year of 2018. And the author is James Dean.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Pete is on a bug safari. He and his friends
- 21:15Speaker 1: are looking for bugs. How many bugs can they find?
- 21:19Speaker 1: Callie spots a tiny black ant. It's building an anthill,
- 21:23Speaker 1: she says. Groovy, says Pete. Gus finds a round red
- 21:27Speaker 1: ladybug in the mint patch. It has nine spots, says Gus. Nice,
- 21:32Speaker 1: says Pete. Marty sees a big black spider. It caught
- 21:36Speaker 1: a fly, he says. Neat, says Pete. Pete finds a
- 21:39Speaker 1: green caterpillar in the flower pot. I will bring it
- 21:43Speaker 1: home to show Mom and Dad, he says. Mom helps
- 21:46Speaker 1: Pete build a home for the caterpillar. They use a
- 21:49Speaker 1: big jar. Dad puts lots of little hoes in the
- 21:52Speaker 1: lid for air. Pete puts the caterpillar in the jar.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Pete puts some leaves in the jar for the caterpillar
- 21:59Speaker 1: to eat. He adds a twig for it to crawl on.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Good night, Pete, says mom. Good night, Pete, says dad.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Good night, caterpillar, says Pete. When Pete wakes up, the
- 22:10Speaker 1: caterpillar is gone. Where did it go? Did it run away?
- 22:13Speaker 1: It is not gone, says mom. It did not run away,
- 22:17Speaker 1: says dad. Look, they say. The caterpillar is inside there,
- 22:22Speaker 1: says mom. It's called a pupa. Will it stay there forever?
- 22:27Speaker 1: Pete asks. No, says Dad. The caterpillar is changing into
- 22:31Speaker 1: something new. What will it become, Pete asks. It's a surprise,
- 22:36Speaker 1: says Mom. We must wait and see. Pete waits. Callie
- 22:40Speaker 1: comes to visit. Did it come out yet, she asks.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Not yet, says Pete. Pete waits some more. Gus comes
- 22:47Speaker 1: to visit. Did it come out yet, he asks. Not yet,
- 22:51Speaker 1: says Pete. Pete waits even longer. Marty comes to visit.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Did it come out yet, he asks. Not yet, says Pete.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Pete waits and waits and waits. Then one day, something
- 23:05Speaker 1: finally happens. The pupa starts wiggle. To wiggle. Something is happening,
- 23:11Speaker 1: says Pete. It wiggles some more. Everyone comes over to watch.
- 23:15Speaker 1: It cracks open. Something is coming out. What can it be?
- 23:18Speaker 1: A head pokes out. Then some legs. And then two
- 23:22Speaker 1: colorful wings. The caterpillar changed into a beautiful butterfly. Wow,
- 23:28Speaker 1: says Pete. The butterfly slowly moves its wings up and down.
- 23:32Speaker 1: It is ready to fly. They take the jar to
- 23:36Speaker 1: the park. Time to say goodbye, says Dad. Pete opens
- 23:40Speaker 1: the lid of the jar. The butterfly flaps its wings.
- 23:44Speaker 1: It flutters out of the jar and lands on Pete's nose.
- 23:48Speaker 1: That tickles, he says. Then the butterfly flies up into
- 23:52Speaker 1: the sky. Bye-bye, butterfly, everyone says. Let's find a new caterpillar,
- 23:58Speaker 1: says Pete. Change is pretty cool. This concludes the Children's
- 24:05Speaker 1: Story Hour for today. Please join us next time as
