- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's happened? Everybody? Welcome into another edition of the
- 0:13Speaker 1: check Odaily. It's Andrew to Checko here, Eagles beat reporter
- 0:16Speaker 1: for insidethebirds dot Com. Before we get started with the

- 0:30Speaker 1: conversation that Adam Kaplan and I had for WBCB the

- 0:45Speaker 1: where you can probably catch it on the inside the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Birds YouTube channel. And for the second part of the podcast.
- 0:53Speaker 1: On yesterday yesterday's show, I talked about my biggest perceived
- 0:59Speaker 1: issue on offense, and today I'm going to talk about
- 1:02Speaker 1: my biggest perceived issue on defense.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Hey, one thing that always scares me is the latest
- 1:07Speaker 2: financial scam. And with the holidays, it's all about finding

- 2:19Speaker 1: So there's a lot of well, there's not a lot
- 2:23Speaker 1: but there are some items that you can point to
- 2:26Speaker 1: the I guess the fluid nature of the second cornerback position,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and that's sort of been in flux this season, though
- 2:35Speaker 1: A Dori Jackson seems to have put his stamp on
- 2:38Speaker 1: that role. I think you can look at the run
- 2:42Speaker 1: defense if you're looking at the current state based off
- 2:46Speaker 1: of the Friday afternoon game where they were gashed for
- 2:50Speaker 1: two hundred and eighty one rushing yards with DeAndre Swift
- 2:53Speaker 1: and rookie Kyle Manungai. But for me, I'm going to
- 2:55Speaker 1: look at a certain area that I think has been
- 3:00Speaker 1: I don't want to say problematic, but I guess I
- 3:02Speaker 1: will say the right word for that would be something
- 3:05Speaker 1: that has been a prevailing theme throughout the season, and
- 3:09Speaker 1: that has been sporadic production off the edge in terms
- 3:14Speaker 1: of generating pressure. And the Eagles added Jalen Phillips at
- 3:20Speaker 1: the trade deadline. They also brought Brandon Graham out of retirement,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and earlier in the season they tried to rectify it
- 3:28Speaker 1: by getting Zadarius Smith in. He has a sack and
- 3:32Speaker 1: a half in the limited time that he played for
- 3:34Speaker 1: the team. He retired. Obo Okoronquell suffered a triceps injury
- 3:42Speaker 1: playing four snaps in the Buccaneers game. He's done for
- 3:45Speaker 1: the season, and so the Eagles had to get creative
- 3:48Speaker 1: and at the trade deadline. I thought they did a
- 3:49Speaker 1: really good job Eagles general manager Harry Roseman, to be specific,
- 3:53Speaker 1: in getting Jalen Phillips from the Miami Dolphins in here
- 3:57Speaker 1: to bolster the pass rush group. They also that no
- 4:00Speaker 1: One Smith back from injury reserve, and Nolan Smith seems
- 4:03Speaker 1: to be recently seeing an uptick in his snaps as
- 4:06Speaker 1: the Eagles continue to up his snapshare and get him
- 4:10Speaker 1: more integrated in the defense. Remember, he had a triceps
- 4:13Speaker 1: injury that put him on the shelf. So now they
- 4:16Speaker 1: have a number of different guys that they can throw
- 4:18Speaker 1: in there and send waves of pass rushers at opposing quarterbacks.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And so coming out of that bye week, the Eagles
- 4:26Speaker 1: played the Green Bay Packers, and you saw the impact
- 4:29Speaker 1: that jaywhen Phillips had he was physical, setting the edge,
- 4:33Speaker 1: the length, and it complemented what the Eagles already had.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher, and if you have a family

- 5:52Speaker 2: There's no sat like simply safe.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Jay looks Hunt settling into a role. I think that
- 5:57Speaker 1: probably suits him more. He's been playing more snaps to
- 6:00Speaker 1: Nolan Smith, but I think having a rotation keeps him fresh.
- 6:04Speaker 1: He's been generating a ton of pressure. I think he's
- 6:06Speaker 1: playing an extremely high level. To be clear, whenever your
- 6:11Speaker 1: defense gives up two hundred and eighty one rushing yards,
- 6:13Speaker 1: which the Eagles did in their most recent game, you
- 6:17Speaker 1: can look at everybody and say that they're at fault.
- 6:20Speaker 1: But by and large, from a pass rush standpoint, I
- 6:24Speaker 1: think Jay loox Hunt has been playing and performing like
- 6:27Speaker 1: the Eagles best right now, generating pressure. He had the
- 6:31Speaker 1: interception against the Bears. He had another interception that went
- 6:33Speaker 1: for a touchdown against the Vikings. But the pressures have
- 6:36Speaker 1: been there. He's recently got home with a couple of
- 6:40Speaker 1: sacks of late.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough, parking traffic,
- 6:45Speaker 2: long lines, We've all been there. But when it comes
- 6:48Speaker 2: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 6:52Speaker 2: the dispensary for sports fans just minutes outside of Philly.
- 6:56Speaker 2: With plenty of free parking, you'll be in and out fast,
- 6:59Speaker 2: no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience. Cam
- 7:04Speaker 2: din Apothecary is all about the guest experience. Their staff
- 7:08Speaker 2: makes sure you feel taken care of every time you
- 7:11Speaker 2: walk in. Plus, they carry only the best quality cannabis
- 7:15Speaker 2: at the fairest prices, so whether you're stocking up for
- 7:18Speaker 2: the tailgate, the watch party, or celebrating a big win,
- 7:22Speaker 2: you know you're getting the good stuff without overpaying. They
- 7:26Speaker 2: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 7:30Speaker 2: service members, and healthcare pros. Cam din Apothecary top quality cannabis,
- 7:36Speaker 2: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 7:39Speaker 2: one and up.
- 7:40Speaker 1: No when Smith is starting to make some plays, Jalen
- 7:45Speaker 1: Phillips didn't have as much of an impact against the
- 7:48Speaker 1: Bears as he's had since joining the Eagles in the
- 7:51Speaker 1: Green Bay game, the Detroit Lions game. There were moments
- 7:55Speaker 1: against the Dallas Cowboys, but it's still the Eagles still
- 8:01Speaker 1: don't have the consistent pressure to bear down on quarterbacks,
- 8:06Speaker 1: and it's allowing them to sit back there and try
- 8:12Speaker 1: to find spots and opportunities in the secondary, and the
- 8:16Speaker 1: teams have yet to really exploit that second quarnerback spot
- 8:19Speaker 1: because legles have been able to get some pressure, especially
- 8:23Speaker 1: from the interior with Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Moro Jomo
- 8:27Speaker 1: has been playing fantastic football this season. But I think
- 8:30Speaker 1: if you're looking at the defense and you're trying to
- 8:33Speaker 1: find an area of opportunity, they've been really effective in
- 8:36Speaker 1: the red zone. But Vick Vanjo for the better part
- 8:39Speaker 1: of this season has had to deploy or implement a
- 8:43Speaker 1: lot more pressure than he ordinarily does because the edge
- 8:47Speaker 1: rushers weren't getting home with regularity, and that's what was
- 8:51Speaker 1: needed in order to try and alter the pressure. And
- 8:57Speaker 1: so I think when you look at the season, and
- 8:59Speaker 1: I try not to look at just the last two
- 9:01Speaker 1: weeks or the last three weeks, You try to look
- 9:04Speaker 1: at common themes that have been prevalent in mostly every week,
- 9:08Speaker 1: and I think the Eagles have done a really good
- 9:11Speaker 1: job by and large and stopping the run. So maybe
- 9:13Speaker 1: the game against the Chicago Bears was the outlier. Will
- 9:17Speaker 1: learn more in the coming weeks, as early as Monday night.
- 9:20Speaker 1: So I think that the back end has been fine
- 9:23Speaker 1: all things considered. They lost Drew Macouba for the season,
- 9:27Speaker 1: they now have Sidney Brown there. Marcus EPs had his
- 9:29Speaker 1: twenty one day practice window opened on Tuesday, so perhaps
- 9:34Speaker 1: he factors into the safety equation there starting next to
- 9:36Speaker 1: red blanket ship. Again, we're going to learn more when
- 9:39Speaker 1: we hear from the coordinators, and as the week progresses,
- 9:42Speaker 1: we'll probably get a better sense of where he is.
- 9:45Speaker 1: But all things considered, I think the secondary has has
- 9:49Speaker 1: held up well based on relative to the first couple
- 9:54Speaker 1: weeks of the season. So I think if I had
- 9:56Speaker 1: to identify one area that I perceived to be an issue,
- 10:00Speaker 1: be just providing pressure off the edge. And I think
- 10:03Speaker 1: sometimes you look at the stats and they're too often
- 10:07Speaker 1: measured solely on sacks, but you also have to look
- 10:10Speaker 1: at pressures as well. So in certain moments in those
- 10:14Speaker 1: games like the Cowboys game, Hey.
- 10:16Speaker 2: I still like a good night out, but I'm not
- 10:19Speaker 2: always in the mood to drink. And that's why I
- 10:22Speaker 2: looked for a great alternative, and I found one. It's

- 11:46Speaker 1: I thought that Dak Prescott settled in later in that
- 11:49Speaker 1: game and was able to stand back there and deliver
- 11:51Speaker 1: the football to his receivers. I thought that there were
- 11:54Speaker 1: times that Caleb Williams was able to do just enough
- 11:57Speaker 1: to get the ball out. And I think when you
- 12:00Speaker 1: look at this defense where it is right now, I
- 12:03Speaker 1: have a lot of confidence because of the talent that
- 12:06Speaker 1: they have, the assistant coaches that they have, and Vic
- 12:08Speaker 1: Vango presiding over it, that they're going to round back
- 12:11Speaker 1: into shape. But if there's just one area, I guess
- 12:14Speaker 1: that would be the one issue. But if you even
- 12:19Speaker 1: want to call it an issue, because they have bolstered
- 12:23Speaker 1: it with Jalen Phillips and he's playing a ton of snaps.
- 12:26Speaker 1: He gives them a physical tone setter who can set
- 12:29Speaker 1: the edge. Nolan Smith I mentioned he's playing more now,
- 12:33Speaker 1: jay loox Hunt's playing good football. But you would like
- 12:36Speaker 1: to see them be able to dial up that pressure
- 12:38Speaker 1: off the edge in certain moments and put quarterbacks in flux.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Whereas I look at some of those games in which
- 12:45Speaker 1: they lost against the Broncos, they didn't have Jalen Thillips then,
- 12:51Speaker 1: but namely the one against the Dallas Cowboys, because I
- 12:55Speaker 1: thought that that was a game that you were hoping
- 12:58Speaker 1: to see a little bit more from that group in particular,
- 13:01Speaker 1: and for the Eagles defense to really rebound in a
- 13:04Speaker 1: big way and sort of be playing at their best
- 13:09Speaker 1: down the stretch here, that's something that I would like
- 13:11Speaker 1: to see transpire a little bit more. And then you're
- 13:15Speaker 1: not sort of you're not sort of causing Vic Fangio
- 13:21Speaker 1: to send more pressure and that takes away players and
- 13:24Speaker 1: coverage and things like that. So if I had to
- 13:27Speaker 1: look at one area, that would be it. But there's
- 13:29Speaker 1: a lot more to sort of parse through when you're
- 13:33Speaker 1: looking at the offense than there is with the defense,
- 13:35Speaker 1: as you can see. But that's kind of where I'm
- 13:38Speaker 1: at right now with it. That's where I land on it.
- 13:40Speaker 1: But that's going to do it for this edition of
- 13:42Speaker 1: the check Odely, I'm Andrew to checko from Inside the
- 13:44Speaker 1: Birds dot Com. On Wednesday, we'll hear from Eagles coordinators.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Remember everything gets pushed up a day or back a day,
- 13:51Speaker 1: I guess I should say, because they play on Monday night,
- 13:53Speaker 1: they'll be back on the practice field Thursday, so I'll
- 13:56Speaker 1: have another podcast for you tomorrow where I outline some
- 13:59Speaker 1: of the takeaways what Vic Vangio, Kevin Patullo, and Michael
- 14:03Speaker 1: Clay had to say. But for now, that's going to
- 14:06Speaker 1: do it for this edition. I will catch you on
- 14:08Speaker 1: the next one.
