- 0:00Speaker 1: All Star Toyota presents Off the Bench with Jacob Hester
- 0:04Speaker 1: and Matt Flynn.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Okay, here we go where the.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Players get broken down, then science gets denied.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Got to come off the bench.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hour two of Off the Bench Live from the Mercedes
- 0:14Speaker 1: ben So Baton Rouge Studio starts now.
- 0:21Speaker 4: All right, welcome back in OTB one of four five
- 0:24Speaker 4: ESPN Baton Rouge. It is now time to go to
- 0:27Speaker 4: my guy, mister Ben Hartsock, Ohio state legend decade in
- 0:32Speaker 4: the NFL, my colleague at sirius x him Benjamin.
- 0:36Speaker 3: How are we doing, sir?
- 0:37Speaker 5: Do well?
- 0:38Speaker 6: Hester, Good to.
- 0:39Speaker 7: See you, man. I don't know this Flynn guy though.
- 0:41Speaker 6: Here he's a little shifty.
- 0:43Speaker 7: I'm a little.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Man.
- 0:46Speaker 3: You know this.
- 0:47Speaker 4: You gotta watch out for the quarterbacks always like you
- 0:50Speaker 4: gotta keep both eyes on them.
- 0:52Speaker 7: Definitely absolutely good to see you guys.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Yeah, great to see you. Before we get into anything
- 0:57Speaker 4: football related. Uh, you're a pageant dad, I mean, and
- 1:03Speaker 4: you are thriving right now, sir.
- 1:06Speaker 7: Let me tell you something.
- 1:07Speaker 8: It was not on my bingo card that my oldest
- 1:11Speaker 8: would get into pageants, but here we are, and I'm
- 1:15Speaker 8: gonna bottom.
- 1:16Speaker 7: Line this thing.
- 1:17Speaker 8: It's a lot Wow, it is a lot. There's my
- 1:24Speaker 8: oldest starting pageants two years ago. She was so fortunate
- 1:27Speaker 8: she won a local pageant last summer. So she was
- 1:32Speaker 8: missed Greater Atlanta's team. Big caveat she's in the team categories, right, Okay,
- 1:37Speaker 8: so she gets to compete in Miss Georgia. That's a
- 1:39Speaker 8: big deal. Whoever wins Miss Georgia goes to Miss America. Right,
- 1:42Speaker 8: that's how these things go. It's like the playoff system,
- 1:45Speaker 8: and she goes down to this Miss Georgia festival. I
- 1:51Speaker 8: guess it's the only way you can call it. They
- 1:53Speaker 8: don't just compete Saturday. Saturday is the big finish. They
- 1:57Speaker 8: got their last Thursday. Guys, they checked in. I rented an.
- 2:01Speaker 7: Airbnb in Columbus, Georgia for ten.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Days, ten days, ten days.
- 2:09Speaker 7: This is like burning Man for pageants. It's bananas. Bananas.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Wait, why didn't you just pull the RV up?
- 2:16Speaker 6: Oh?
- 2:17Speaker 8: Because mom and Dad are coming down from Ohio to
- 2:19Speaker 8: to soak in the festivities tomorrow. They're staying in the
- 2:22Speaker 8: RF as a secondary casita. It's over at the Pine
- 2:27Speaker 8: Woods RV Resort just outside.
- 2:29Speaker 7: Columbus, Georgia, so that we can stay as a family
- 2:32Speaker 7: in the Airbnb.
- 2:33Speaker 8: And you know what's funny about pageanting is do you
- 2:36Speaker 8: remember at the combine guys, how you're trying to be
- 2:40Speaker 8: like Johnny good teammate, Like, all.
- 2:42Speaker 9: Right, bro, go kill it on the bench press. I
- 2:44Speaker 9: hope you get one hundred reps. Oh dude, I hope
- 2:47Speaker 9: your vertical is like six feet bro, Like, really, you
- 2:50Speaker 9: hope the guy trips, You hope the guy falls down.
- 2:53Speaker 9: You're not really rude to that guy. It's that plus.
- 2:56Speaker 8: More in the pageant realm oh, your outfit is fire.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It is you know what I keep down.
- 3:04Speaker 8: Every one of these girls hopes that the other girl
- 3:06Speaker 8: gets a massive zip right in the middle of their nose.
- 3:09Speaker 7: That's all this is. That's all this is. It's fake.
- 3:12Speaker 7: It's fake juice, fake juice.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 3:14Speaker 4: That is so good because you're exactly right, Like, yeah, Google,
- 3:20Speaker 4: get that three cone drill, like no, I want the
- 3:23Speaker 4: best three cone drill, like Darren McFadden, Like, I hope
- 3:25Speaker 4: you slipped three times actually on this drill before you go.
- 3:29Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly, that's exactly.
- 3:31Speaker 8: But it's it's an incredible thing. It's weird to have
- 3:34Speaker 8: she graduated high school. I've got a high school graduate.
- 3:37Speaker 8: I've got a younger that's now a rising junior. Life
- 3:40Speaker 8: comes at you fast. Which, by the way, how about
- 3:43Speaker 8: the fact that your boy, Philip Rivers, your boy Philip
- 3:45Speaker 8: Rivers has got a kid committed, Like all of our
- 3:48Speaker 8: old teammates are getting to that where our kids are
- 3:50Speaker 8: going to college. The tweet I sent you a couple
- 3:53Speaker 8: weeks ago had me cracking up. It was saying that
- 3:56Speaker 8: every other year, we're gonna have a Philip Rivers son
- 3:59Speaker 8: going to be a college quarterback, just like the Fast.
- 4:03Speaker 7: And Furious movie series. Like that's the kind of the rhythm.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Funny enough, The guy who put that tweet out, Chris Marler,
- 4:09Speaker 4: works for us here at this station.
- 4:13Speaker 3: So good man, you didn't even know that when you
- 4:15Speaker 3: send it to me. But I will say this, though
- 4:17Speaker 3: it's a great tweet, but seven of.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Ten or girls for Philip, So football wise, right, you're
- 4:25Speaker 4: gonna have a little bit of a gap. We're not
- 4:27Speaker 4: gonna get the banger Fast and Furious movies every other
- 4:30Speaker 4: year because you know, other sports, but just not football.
- 4:33Speaker 3: With the River Skips.
- 4:34Speaker 8: Next time you talk to Philip, tell them don't let
- 4:36Speaker 8: those girls do pageants.
- 4:38Speaker 7: Stay as far away as possible.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Oh, I love it.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I love it so yeah, I definitely want to ask
- 4:45Speaker 4: you about that. You did say it was kind of
- 4:47Speaker 4: like the playoff. There give me Ben hart Socks, because look,
- 4:52Speaker 4: you and I did radio together for a very long time.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Now you do the show before my show, so we
- 4:56Speaker 4: don't get a chance to But you and I have
- 4:58Speaker 4: always had great conversations, open conversations about the future of
- 5:02Speaker 4: college football. I was like at SEC spring meetings, and
- 5:05Speaker 4: so I heard a lot from ads and coaches and
- 5:08Speaker 4: what they wanted to do. What does Ben Hartsock want
- 5:11Speaker 4: to do with the college football playoff?
- 5:13Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 5:14Speaker 8: I mean, honestly, I think we are in an era
- 5:18Speaker 8: in society that we are designer everything. We wanted to
- 5:22Speaker 8: design every perfect possible outcome, whether you're a high school
- 5:28Speaker 8: kid trying to be a start or a middle school
- 5:31Speaker 8: kid trying to start on high schoo whether you're high
- 5:32Speaker 8: school kid trying to play in college, a college kids
- 5:35Speaker 8: trying to play in pros, the college team trying to
- 5:38Speaker 8: make it to the playoff.
- 5:39Speaker 7: We want to fine tune. It's risk of mitigation.
- 5:43Speaker 8: It's like ruben Feffer from a Long Game, Polly, you
- 5:46Speaker 8: want to mitigate your risk and make your desired outcome
- 5:49Speaker 8: as high as you possibly could. And the postseason, the
- 5:54Speaker 8: fact that we've had one iteration of the twelve team
- 5:57Speaker 8: playoff and immediately we're starting to fine tune it. We
- 6:00Speaker 8: want to tweak it just a little bit to get
- 6:02Speaker 8: a more perfect outcome. Like I understand there it might
- 6:08Speaker 8: be justified to make that adjustment to go from conference
- 6:12Speaker 8: championship seating to straight seating because of last year's output,
- 6:16Speaker 8: But next year it might be completely different and a
- 6:18Speaker 8: team that deserved to get a buy as a championship team,
- 6:23Speaker 8: you know, will be taken to have that taken from them,
- 6:27Speaker 8: and it will then we'll be like, well, we need
- 6:28Speaker 8: to switch it to something else. So I think all
- 6:31Speaker 8: of this stuff and the playoff is no different. We
- 6:34Speaker 8: are very much in an era where we can change
- 6:36Speaker 8: these things and fine tune them, and as a result,
- 6:39Speaker 8: maybe we'll have a more balanced bracket like we didn't
- 6:42Speaker 8: have this year.
- 6:44Speaker 7: But the unattended.
- 6:45Speaker 8: Consequence is the meaningfulness of the conference championship games is diminished.
- 6:51Speaker 8: Those winner go home games and or the buy that
- 6:54Speaker 8: came as a benefit of those go away.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Yeah, they certainly do.
- 6:59Speaker 4: And you know, the big talk down in spring meetings,
- 7:03Speaker 4: was you know, the formats going to change?
- 7:05Speaker 3: Like what we wanted to change too.
- 7:07Speaker 4: That was one of the changes been obviously, like changing
- 7:10Speaker 4: the seating process. But it's like, now, okay, let's get
- 7:12Speaker 4: to sixteen teams. And for me, I'm in favor of going, Hey,
- 7:17Speaker 4: five automatic qualifiers if you win your conference. I am
- 7:21Speaker 4: all for that, because winning your conference should mean something
- 7:25Speaker 4: like you should get in there and then.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Eleven at largest.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I do not need four bids automatically to the SEC,
- 7:31Speaker 4: four to the Big Ten.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I just don't need that.
- 7:33Speaker 4: I need the eleven best teams after the five champion.
- 7:37Speaker 4: And look, let's go back to a system that all
- 7:39Speaker 4: three of us won a national championship in the BCS system.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Let's go to something like that because in college baseball
- 7:46Speaker 4: and softball we have what we always talk about RPI.
- 7:48Speaker 3: What do we talk about in basketball season?
- 7:50Speaker 4: We got kimpalm, we got net raids, right, we got
- 7:52Speaker 4: all these rankings, all these numbers, all these analytics. We
- 7:55Speaker 4: can do something similar in football and we kind of
- 7:57Speaker 4: did with the BCS. So for me, let's get the
- 8:00Speaker 4: eleven best after the champions and no matter what conference
- 8:03Speaker 4: they're in, let's put them in.
- 8:05Speaker 8: So one thing, I don't disagree with you, the five
- 8:08Speaker 8: plus eleven feels the most merit based. But what I
- 8:13Speaker 8: don't want to do is I don't want to go
- 8:15Speaker 8: back to the algorithm.
- 8:18Speaker 7: I've been saying this a bunch recently, like there is
- 8:20Speaker 7: so much.
- 8:21Speaker 8: The FPI for ESPN came out last week and we
- 8:25Speaker 8: talked to Bill Connolly, a lot who does SP plus
- 8:28Speaker 8: all these data metrics.
- 8:29Speaker 7: A pastor said this to us. It might have been
- 8:31Speaker 7: a year or more ago.
- 8:32Speaker 8: Pastor said, our kids don't need us today anymore for
- 8:36Speaker 8: any kind of information. If our kids want to know
- 8:40Speaker 8: how to clean a carburetor or build a nuclear bomb,
- 8:44Speaker 8: that's all available on the internet very very easily. But
- 8:48Speaker 8: what our kids need us is interpretation. And then the
- 8:51Speaker 8: same way with data. We've got so much. We can
- 8:53Speaker 8: find out any data point on any team at the
- 8:57Speaker 8: snap of the finger. It's the analysis of that data
- 9:00Speaker 8: and an algorithm that is you know, the KPIs, the fpis,
- 9:04Speaker 8: the SP plus. These things are algorithms that are only
- 9:07Speaker 8: as good as the formulas that you put into it.
- 9:10Speaker 7: That might be weighted.
- 9:12Speaker 8: You know what one team or one guy thinks that
- 9:14Speaker 8: third down percentage is weighted higher than red zone efficiency,
- 9:18Speaker 8: and so I want to have humans be involved in
- 9:23Speaker 8: the analysis all the way to the end. That eye
- 9:25Speaker 8: test matters to me. And I'm not saying.
- 9:27Speaker 7: Only ballplayers or coaches can be the people to do it.
- 9:30Speaker 8: There's plenty of people that have never stepped foot on
- 9:32Speaker 8: a field that know how to now analyze football. The
- 9:36Speaker 8: BCS era, remember we want bananas. The sporting public went
- 9:39Speaker 8: bananas because we can't have just computers making this decision.
- 9:43Speaker 8: We computers can't watch football. So I want to make
- 9:47Speaker 8: the people in the room the committee. Maybe you could
- 9:50Speaker 8: make that more transparent. You could make a c span
- 9:52Speaker 8: and live stream that that process. I want the humans
- 9:56Speaker 8: in the building, one because I think the human eye
- 9:59Speaker 8: is necessary. And two, I think the biases that you
- 10:04Speaker 8: can never get away from. Eight years in the radio,
- 10:07Speaker 8: I've learned you're not gonna eliminate all bias. Can I
- 10:10Speaker 8: be objective towards my team? Can you be objective towards
- 10:13Speaker 8: your team? Absolutely? But your lived experience gives you a
- 10:16Speaker 8: little different worldview. And that's part of college football's charm
- 10:21Speaker 8: is some of the unreasonable and the human foiable nature
- 10:26Speaker 8: of it all.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I think you said it best.
- 10:28Speaker 10: As long as people have transparency in anything, especially with this,
- 10:32Speaker 10: I think we can all at least get on board
- 10:34Speaker 10: with it, Like you make a decision. I disagree with
- 10:36Speaker 10: thee whatever it is, at least I know why you're
- 10:39Speaker 10: not locked in a room for hours and then you'll
- 10:42Speaker 10: just come and tell us and we have to accept it.
- 10:44Speaker 10: But I think we can all agree that there's not
- 10:46Speaker 10: a perfect system. Whether you use algorithms, computers, people, whatever
- 10:50Speaker 10: it is, there's gonna be people that get pissed off.
- 10:53Speaker 10: There's gonna be arguments made against. I think all we
- 10:56Speaker 10: can hope for as fans of college football is that
- 10:59Speaker 10: they're improvement. We want to see the most deserving and
- 11:02Speaker 10: we want to see the best. How do you figure
- 11:04Speaker 10: out that combination? So there's never a perfect situation, So.
- 11:09Speaker 3: No, there's not.
- 11:10Speaker 4: But I mean the transparency they are talking about, I
- 11:12Speaker 4: think that would help. I always talk about this, and
- 11:14Speaker 4: Ben's heard me go off on this, like if an
- 11:16Speaker 4: official makes a bad call, because if you threw an interception,
- 11:19Speaker 4: if Ben missed the block, if I fumbled, we had
- 11:22Speaker 4: to answer the question after the game count why did
- 11:25Speaker 4: you do it?
- 11:25Speaker 3: What happened? And I would love that from officials.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Hey, I called this because I saw this kind of
- 11:29Speaker 4: the same system, Like, hey, let's get in those rooms.
- 11:33Speaker 4: You know how many people ben you do know would
- 11:36Speaker 4: watch that like behind the doors college Football Playoff Committee
- 11:41Speaker 4: and you know whatever analytics that they're using, and they're
- 11:43Speaker 4: going over it and hear those conversations of what those
- 11:46Speaker 4: ads and presidents, former coaches. I would tune into every
- 11:51Speaker 4: single minute of that.
- 11:53Speaker 8: You guys said, well, hold on before I start my story,
- 11:56Speaker 8: are you guys on a heart out?
- 11:57Speaker 3: Do I have a heart out?
- 11:57Speaker 11: No?
- 11:57Speaker 3: No, Yeah, we had a letter rip.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Okay, So.
- 12:03Speaker 8: You guys we were all in locker rooms when the
- 12:05Speaker 8: analytics era really washed over the NFL. Do you guys
- 12:09Speaker 8: remember your first interactions with analytics?
- 12:14Speaker 3: I mean no, I do.
- 12:16Speaker 4: We had so we brought in somebody from the military
- 12:19Speaker 4: into San Diego that I was probably twenty twelve and
- 12:23Speaker 4: it was a former marine, and they like they would
- 12:26Speaker 4: start to go over different things with us as far
- 12:28Speaker 4: as you know, analytics to everything like pass protections and
- 12:32Speaker 4: footwork and like all those things.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Yeah, they brought in somebody for sure.
- 12:35Speaker 7: So when I was it was this was during the
- 12:38Speaker 7: Panthers era.
- 12:38Speaker 6: For me.
- 12:39Speaker 8: So eleven, twelve, thirteen, one of those years, we were
- 12:42Speaker 8: down in the weight room the day after a Sunday game.
- 12:45Speaker 8: We're on a Monday light workout. You know, y'all go
- 12:49Speaker 8: through the corrections from the previous day. John Mascow, the
- 12:52Speaker 8: O line coach for the team, came down and he
- 12:55Speaker 8: goes boys by the scouts and the front office people upstairs.
- 13:01Speaker 7: They've got this new thing called.
- 13:02Speaker 6: Pro Football Focus, and they've.
- 13:06Speaker 7: Got this information that these guys have given every one
- 13:09Speaker 7: of you jokers a great yeh.
- 13:11Speaker 8: And the front office people upstairs have given us to
- 13:14Speaker 8: this info, to these coaches, this new data, and they
- 13:17Speaker 8: say that we should make this part of our analysis.
- 13:20Speaker 8: This should be part of our evaluation of you, day
- 13:24Speaker 8: in day out.
- 13:25Speaker 3: And what do we do.
- 13:26Speaker 7: We're like a bunch of nerds. These guys don't know ball.
- 13:31Speaker 7: You're telling me that some guy in.
- 13:33Speaker 8: The basement of his mom's of his mom's house is
- 13:36Speaker 8: going to be able to say no, whether or not.
- 13:38Speaker 7: Me and so and so executed a double.
- 13:40Speaker 9: Team like well what I've wrote it at a well
- 13:43Speaker 9: fast forward, real quick.
- 13:44Speaker 8: They had it broken down by team, They had us
- 13:46Speaker 8: broken down by offensive unit. They had it broke it
- 13:49Speaker 8: down a lot of different ways in that era. And
- 13:52Speaker 8: now remember this was early. They had us broke down
- 13:54Speaker 8: by tight ends. Would you like to know who was
- 13:57Speaker 8: the number one over all ranked tight end in the
- 14:02Speaker 8: entirety of the NFL in that early Pro Football Focus era.
- 14:06Speaker 3: I'm gonna say it's your favorite Hart, this guy, this
- 14:10Speaker 3: guy and I.
- 14:11Speaker 8: We were like, whoa, whoa wait, let's let these guys cook.
- 14:16Speaker 7: They're onto something here. Maybe they know something we don't.
- 14:21Speaker 7: Oh man, we had the biggest laugh at that expense.
- 14:24Speaker 8: But see, that's the point is that there was an
- 14:26Speaker 8: out Pro Football Focus has.
- 14:27Speaker 7: Got an algorithm, ESPN's got an algorithm. On Three's got
- 14:31Speaker 7: an algorithm, and it's only as good.
- 14:32Speaker 8: And for that era, it was early in that formula
- 14:36Speaker 8: to where they had misweighted run blocking. I could handle
- 14:39Speaker 8: myself at the point of attack. I get these two
- 14:41Speaker 8: jumper cables on you.
- 14:42Speaker 7: I'm going to shock you, right.
- 14:44Speaker 5: But they had waited the run block too much and
- 14:48Speaker 5: the pass protection too much, but not yet because I
- 14:50Speaker 5: had a zero on the route running capability or passes received.
- 14:55Speaker 8: So that that it was a good example for me
- 14:58Speaker 8: to point out these algorithms are good as a tool,
- 15:01Speaker 8: but they're not the only tool that we should use.
- 15:04Speaker 6: No.
- 15:04Speaker 4: I mean, I'm right there with you. I think it
- 15:06Speaker 4: can certainly be something that you use. And just like
- 15:09Speaker 4: look when I start talking about RPI and NET and
- 15:12Speaker 4: kim paly all those things, that's not how it's seeded.
- 15:15Speaker 4: But it is something that they use and it is
- 15:17Speaker 4: heavily involved in the committee because basketball has a committee,
- 15:21Speaker 4: Football has it, you know, a committee, Baseball has a committee.
- 15:24Speaker 4: All of these sports have committees. But those other sports,
- 15:28Speaker 4: you know, have that, Hey, their strength to schedule. Hey,
- 15:31Speaker 4: Ohio State this year, they had to go, you know,
- 15:33Speaker 4: to Oregon, they had to go to Illinois, and they
- 15:36Speaker 4: had to go to Michigan.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Like that should mean something.
- 15:39Speaker 4: So that's what I'm talking about with having that analytic
- 15:41Speaker 4: strength to schedule and having because that's what we talk
- 15:44Speaker 4: about with RPI. It's like this seems fourteenth in the country,
- 15:47Speaker 4: but they got the third highest RPI because man, did
- 15:49Speaker 4: you see who those son of a guns had to
- 15:50Speaker 4: play on the road this year? And that's why I
- 15:52Speaker 4: want to use that analytic Although it's not seeding it
- 15:55Speaker 4: like a computer, humans are still doing it, but they
- 15:58Speaker 4: have that resource.
- 16:00Speaker 8: Yeah, and to go back to the question of like,
- 16:02Speaker 8: what do we want to change, what do we want
- 16:04Speaker 8: to see? I love I think the SEC was floating
- 16:07Speaker 8: this some of on championship weekend, conference championship weekend and
- 16:11Speaker 8: having one verse two obviously being in the championship game,
- 16:14Speaker 8: but then those bonus games that we got.
- 16:16Speaker 7: We got that.
- 16:17Speaker 8: During COVID right three verse four would face off five
- 16:19Speaker 8: verse six. Kind of a good on good as in
- 16:22Speaker 8: a world where hopefully two or three and four and
- 16:26Speaker 8: four and five are going to be competing for justification
- 16:29Speaker 8: to convince the committee we're good enough to make one
- 16:33Speaker 8: of those at large bids. I think that's a really
- 16:35Speaker 8: interesting and compelling and of course the networks are going
- 16:37Speaker 8: to love it because it's content and more games or
- 16:40Speaker 8: as conference championship weekends usually just the championship games. More
- 16:43Speaker 8: content is never a bad thing.
- 16:45Speaker 3: I like that idea been on the way out here.
- 16:49Speaker 4: You and I have talked a lot of college baseball before,
- 16:52Speaker 4: and I got with Bobby yesterday. I might look, hey,
- 16:54Speaker 4: there's no Big ten teams. You know the old Big
- 16:57Speaker 4: ten UCLA sure is in there. Can I count on
- 17:00Speaker 4: you to root for the LSU Tigers in the College
- 17:03Speaker 4: World Series.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:04Speaker 8: I mean I'm wanting to go down to Rocos Bar
- 17:06Speaker 8: and order a bunch of jello shots.
- 17:07Speaker 7: Man, I'm doing my part. I'm ready to chip in.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Look have RV, will travel. That's all you got to
- 17:13Speaker 3: tell me.
- 17:14Speaker 4: I know it's busy right now, it's got it's it's
- 17:16Speaker 4: taking care of the pageant. But if it needs to
- 17:18Speaker 4: go to Omaha, you let me know. We've talked about
- 17:21Speaker 4: that before. I mean, you said you would pick me
- 17:24Speaker 4: up in Treeport.
- 17:25Speaker 8: I know every year I say I'm going to get
- 17:28Speaker 8: to more college basketball games, and then I don't, and
- 17:30Speaker 8: then I want to get to Omaha, and I want
- 17:32Speaker 8: to get to a baseball.
- 17:34Speaker 7: Game or softball to World Series, and I haven't.
- 17:37Speaker 8: These kids, man, pageant life's just sucking all my lass,
- 17:42Speaker 8: my younger, it's you know, pageant life.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Man.
- 17:45Speaker 7: I'm telling you guys, your daughters keep them away from pageants.
- 17:50Speaker 8: I heard owning horses was the most expensive extracurricular a
- 17:54Speaker 8: human can have.
- 17:55Speaker 7: No, it's pageants. Do not do pageants.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Oh hey, well you know now that you're in it,
- 18:00Speaker 4: best of luck. I've had the chance to meet your daughter,
- 18:03Speaker 4: so certainly rooting for her. Hope she goes out there
- 18:06Speaker 4: and wins Miss Georgia and moves on, and you've got
- 18:08Speaker 4: more money to spend.
- 18:09Speaker 7: Sr Yo, Man, Miss America is a whole news.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Let me imagine how many days, how many days he's.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Going to be there for twenty four days if we
- 18:18Speaker 4: go Miss America. So hey, best of luck, Ben, you're
- 18:21Speaker 4: the man. We appreciate it, sir, and look forward to
- 18:24Speaker 4: the next conversation. Always appreciate you guys, have good one,
- 18:26Speaker 4: all right, you as well? Our guy, Ben Hart Sock,
- 18:30Speaker 4: Ohio state legend, a decade in the NFL in my
- 18:33Speaker 4: colleague at serious XM.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Always one of my favorites.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Man, he's crushing it. Man. Yeah, I don't know. I've
- 18:40Speaker 2: never spoke to him before, but I think he'd be I'll.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Never beer with.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Yes, Yes, he has got stories on stories on stories.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Uh huh.
- 18:50Speaker 3: He had.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Like I said, you played a decade in the NFL,
- 18:52Speaker 4: and he played with the Colts and Peyton Manning and
- 18:54Speaker 4: he played with Carolina so Greg Olsen and kind of
- 18:57Speaker 4: that era of Carolina.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Then also played for the Falcons. It's funny.
- 19:01Speaker 4: He played for the Falcons I think for a year
- 19:04Speaker 4: and that's where he chose to live. So he's from Ohio,
- 19:08Speaker 4: played at Ohio State, longtime cold, longtime panther one year
- 19:12Speaker 4: with the Falcons, and that's where he lives.
- 19:14Speaker 10: Was it like, uh, it's whereas that His wife just
- 19:18Speaker 10: loved it. I fell in love with him. Love it
- 19:20Speaker 10: good for them, you know. It's it's funny because every
- 19:23Speaker 10: parent is you talk to all these parents, you know,
- 19:25Speaker 10: our kids are at the age are still figuring out
- 19:27Speaker 10: what they want to do. But are parents with older
- 19:30Speaker 10: kids everything they do, They're like, oh, don't let your
- 19:32Speaker 10: kids play soccer. Oh, don't let him swim, don't let
- 19:35Speaker 10: them volleyball, do it, don't let them do this. But
- 19:37Speaker 10: I think he might be the one that's right there
- 19:41Speaker 10: on the whole. That's that's some long days expensive. My
- 19:45Speaker 10: wife was pageant. Yeah, yeah, so I don't know. I
- 19:49Speaker 10: don't I don't even really know her stance with my
- 19:51Speaker 10: little girls in the pageant pageant world. So I'll being
- 19:54Speaker 10: addressed to see I'm definitely going to relay this information.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Over though for sure ten days.
- 20:00Speaker 3: See, but you're you're I know, we got to take
- 20:02Speaker 3: a break.
- 20:02Speaker 4: But like, so I have odd daughter, you have multiple daughters, right,
- 20:07Speaker 4: and so like you might get away with that conversation like, hey,
- 20:09Speaker 4: if we do this once, you know we're gonna do
- 20:10Speaker 4: it twice. Like it's really expensive, Like the fact that
- 20:13Speaker 4: we only have one daughter and four boys. I know
- 20:17Speaker 4: that kid's gonna be like, oh really remember that travel
- 20:20Speaker 4: baseball fee that we paid. Remember that tournament that we
- 20:22Speaker 4: went to and spent thousands of dollars saying in a hotel.
- 20:25Speaker 4: You remember that seven on seven tournament we had to
- 20:27Speaker 4: travel across the country for and you didn't bat deny. Yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 4: go buy the dress. I mean it's gonna be the
- 20:34Speaker 4: whole conversation. Yeah, fair points, absolutely so. Yeah, we got break.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Yeah, we do.
- 20:44Speaker 4: We got Jerry Mitchell in about ten minutes from now
- 20:46Speaker 4: joining us to break down LSU VERSUS Arkansas and really
- 20:50Speaker 4: the entire College World Series. We'll do that when we
- 20:52Speaker 4: jump back here. It is oh off the bench right

- 21:21Speaker 3: That's right, makes a little bit of a hum.
- 21:24Speaker 4: You don't even hear it, but you know what comes on,

- 22:47Speaker 4: I got you, Okay, I got you. Gwenn's got you too.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Don't like, don't let this man try to be too cool. Okay,
- 22:55Speaker 4: let me tell you something I have I have. Listen.
- 23:00Speaker 4: I've got vivid memories of West Campus apartment. It was
- 23:06Speaker 4: Kyle Williams, Matt Flynn, Peter Dakowski on the top floor, Me,
- 23:10Speaker 4: Luke Sanders, Craig Stouts in the middle floor.
- 23:13Speaker 3: And I would go up to their apartment.
- 23:18Speaker 4: And we would watch reruns of Dawson's Creek on TBS.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Nine to ten, govery morning. It was our stories.
- 23:26Speaker 3: It was our stories.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Yeah, we were getting you know, we were getting back
- 23:29Speaker 4: from workouts, about to go to class.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Relax. We went to class because we had to, and
- 23:34Speaker 3: little Dawson's Creek. We went to class when we knew
- 23:40Speaker 3: we had to go to class.
- 23:42Speaker 4: That is a art when you had a class checker
- 23:46Speaker 4: and you knew how to be checked in the class,
- 23:50Speaker 4: but also the right door to sneak out of set
- 23:52Speaker 4: class and avoid the class checker.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Look, I'm not saying that school wasn't important. It was.
- 24:00Speaker 4: I graduated with honors from LSU, all right, But you
- 24:05Speaker 4: know when you go to class, Matt, and you know
- 24:06Speaker 4: when you don't have to go to class, you know
- 24:08Speaker 4: who to ask the right person for notes, and if
- 24:12Speaker 4: you're really smart, you get your girlfriend who's going to
- 24:15Speaker 4: be your wife, to take the same classes as you do.
- 24:19Speaker 2: You know, being a student athlete's a delicate balance.
- 24:24Speaker 4: You're basically delicate an employee of the university and you
- 24:28Speaker 4: happen to go to school as well.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Back then, like I felt like, do I work for LSU?
- 24:33Speaker 10: I think my kids are actually the cars. I'm not
- 24:34Speaker 10: going to like really give the boy to our three
- 24:38Speaker 10: on that way.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Hey, Flynn, children, if you want the full rundown on
- 24:42Speaker 4: your father, I got you.
- 24:45Speaker 3: You let me know. Huck school, I see you. No,
- 24:49Speaker 3: that's what I'm saying. No it is.
- 24:50Speaker 4: I'm saying that school is important, but there is a
- 24:54Speaker 4: way so you get to college. There is a way
- 24:56Speaker 4: when you're in college to make sure you're doing all
- 24:59Speaker 4: the right things.
- 25:02Speaker 3: But also you don't have to.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Be in there. He's got to take care of your business.
- 25:05Speaker 2: He got to take care of that, Bene.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Let me tell you when when me and Steltz went
- 25:08Speaker 4: into Ted White's office, who was you know, our academic
- 25:12Speaker 4: counselor the man he was, the man he was in
- 25:15Speaker 4: was he in like Major League or Angels in the Outfield.
- 25:17Speaker 3: He was an extra in one of those movies.
- 25:19Speaker 4: Anyways, we go into Ted's office and he's like, hey, guys,
- 25:24Speaker 4: you're a freshman. You got to go to study hall
- 25:26Speaker 4: and our schedule was brutal. So go into study hall
- 25:28Speaker 4: from seven to nine at night after you finish practice
- 25:31Speaker 4: and all that.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Like it was miserable.
- 25:33Speaker 4: It is what it is that it was terrible just
- 25:35Speaker 4: because you didn't get home till like nine thirty.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:37Speaker 4: He's like, but but if you two goofballs make over
- 25:41Speaker 4: a three to two five your first semester, I'm never
- 25:45Speaker 4: gonna see you again unless you really mess up your
- 25:48Speaker 4: first semester on campus. If you make over a three
- 25:50Speaker 4: to two five, you're done. That's all I had to hear.
- 25:54Speaker 10: Yeah, they they stopped class checking you at least when
- 25:57Speaker 10: we were I think the older we got, the more
- 25:59Speaker 10: we didn't have to go to study hall. Yeah, you
- 26:00Speaker 10: have to go to study hall if you take care
- 26:02Speaker 10: of business. You got to move off campus after a year.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a big deal. I was tied into it. Yeah.
- 26:09Speaker 2: So yeah, just you gotta start out strong early.
- 26:12Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 26:14Speaker 4: You fool them early and then you continue to trick
- 26:18Speaker 4: them along the way, and then you graduate with honors
- 26:22Speaker 4: our general Studies degree.
- 26:23Speaker 10: That was one of the biggest, like like when you
- 26:26Speaker 10: look at regrets, that was one of the biggest ones
- 26:28Speaker 10: I have because I did. I went into college not
- 26:29Speaker 10: really know what I wanted to study. I know I
- 26:31Speaker 10: wanted to play football. If I would have like enjoyed
- 26:34Speaker 10: and like been into the classes, it would have been
- 26:36Speaker 10: a lot different stories. But I was, you know, I
- 26:38Speaker 10: was taking classes with like twenty five other football people,
- 26:43Speaker 10: football players.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Yeah, then that was it, you get it. And then
- 26:46Speaker 4: we got we got a guy jar Mitchell set to
- 26:48Speaker 4: join us. Yeah, there's a lot of classes I have
- 26:52Speaker 4: with uh no, only football, but like Big Baby Davis
- 26:54Speaker 4: Tyris Thomas, Oh.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, football, basketball, we were all intermingled.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Baseball had did their own thing, like baseball didn't hang
- 27:01Speaker 4: out with us. Our football and basketball hung out Baseball
- 27:05Speaker 4: guys like they didn't.
- 27:06Speaker 3: They did their own thing, like they didn't want to
- 27:08Speaker 3: hang out with us. Yeah, it's fine.
- 27:11Speaker 4: It is funny though, Like so one of like I
- 27:13Speaker 4: had a math minor in college, like Matt just is
- 27:16Speaker 4: kind of my thing. Like English certainly not my thing,
- 27:18Speaker 4: but math was. I didn't see many athletes in that class.
- 27:22Speaker 4: In those math classes.
- 27:23Speaker 6: I was taking.
- 27:24Speaker 10: Not a lot of athletes that winter session class I took,
- 27:27Speaker 10: I talked about last week, you gotta shove a whole
- 27:30Speaker 10: semester into two weeks.
- 27:31Speaker 2: I was the only athlete in that one.
- 27:34Speaker 4: I bet you were, all right, we are going to
- 27:36Speaker 4: set very cool cool. It is very I mean, look,
- 27:40Speaker 4: we didn't say I didn't say anything bad.
- 27:44Speaker 3: What do we say that was bad?
- 27:46Speaker 2: Nothing? We spoke truth is all right, some knowledge we.
- 27:51Speaker 4: Are going to go to break when we come back.
- 27:53Speaker 4: Jared Mitchell, lsu Legend SEC Network will join us.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Right here on TV. Off the bench, all right, go
- 28:03Speaker 3: to pelicanroof dot com. Pelicanroof dot com is the website.
- 28:06Speaker 4: I know Matt's gonna tell you about the financing options
- 28:09Speaker 4: that they have over at Pelican Roof, but I am
- 28:11Speaker 4: going to tell you about the instant quote tool that
- 28:13Speaker 4: they have right there top right corner of the website.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Go ahead to get a lay of the land and outline.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Of your roof at your home, at your business and
- 28:20Speaker 4: kind of tell you exactly what it is going to
- 28:23Speaker 4: cost as far as like the quote right, you're gonna
- 28:25Speaker 4: get the quote based off of your roof outline.
- 28:28Speaker 3: They're gonna come out. They're gonna do great work.
- 28:29Speaker 4: I told you about my experience in my neighborhood is
- 28:32Speaker 4: clean work as well. And you can go to the
- 28:34Speaker 4: website pelicanroof dot com in Baton Rouge in laugh. Yet
- 28:37Speaker 4: remember they are in both communities right there, strong in
- 28:39Speaker 4: the communities.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Pelicanroof dot com.
- 28:41Speaker 10: Yeah, a new roof is a big deal, right It's
- 28:44Speaker 10: they got to come out there. It's one of the
- 28:46Speaker 10: more important things in your home. So check them out
- 28:50Speaker 10: with their financing they have. It's a big push for
- 28:52Speaker 10: them right now. They have zero percent interest for up
- 28:55Speaker 10: to twenty one months on their finance and calling today
- 28:57Speaker 10: see how they can help you. Three three seven seven
- 28:59Speaker 10: three four from.
- 29:19Speaker 1: The locker room to the airwaves. Gets off the bench
- 29:22Speaker 1: with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn.
- 29:24Speaker 4: All right, then, welcome back in OTB one four five
- 29:28Speaker 4: ESPN Baton Rouge. Gonna go now to one of our
- 29:31Speaker 4: former teammates now crushing it on the SEC network. Mister
- 29:36Speaker 4: Jerry Mitchell joins the show. Now, j Mitch, how you doing, sir?
- 29:39Speaker 4: Always a pleasure.
- 29:40Speaker 6: I'm feeling great. How you boys?
- 29:42Speaker 3: Doing.
- 29:42Speaker 6: Man, how y'all living?
- 29:43Speaker 3: We are doing fantastic? Hey how about this?
- 29:45Speaker 4: A week into doing the show, Flynn showed up seven
- 29:48Speaker 4: days in a row, So shout out to Flynn.
- 29:51Speaker 3: But J Mitch, he's about to go out of town
- 29:53Speaker 3: for like a week.
- 29:58Speaker 6: Hey, hey, we all wish you could be.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Seven days is a lot. I need a break, Bud,
- 30:07Speaker 2: and listen.
- 30:08Speaker 11: I'm used to us being like in this kind of setting,
- 30:10Speaker 11: but like we all used to have to shut up
- 30:11Speaker 11: and like just let Matt talk, like.
- 30:12Speaker 3: So like yes exactly, and we're in the huddle.
- 30:16Speaker 4: He's like, shut up, you peasants, let me talk, and
- 30:19Speaker 4: he tries to do the same thing here. J Mitch Man,
- 30:22Speaker 4: I am so happy for you. You're crushing it on
- 30:24Speaker 4: the SEC network. Love seeing our LSU brethren on there,
- 30:28Speaker 4: even though you have to put up with part time
- 30:30Speaker 4: Peter Burns.
- 30:30Speaker 3: We apologize for that portion of.
- 30:33Speaker 4: It, but man, love seeing you on there. And how Hey,
- 30:35Speaker 4: how are you going to take in Omaha like that?
- 30:37Speaker 3: Do you know? Are you gonna be in studio for that?
- 30:40Speaker 6: No?
- 30:40Speaker 11: So I'm gonna be home for that. I depends. I'm
- 30:44Speaker 11: thinking about going up there. On the back app of
- 30:46Speaker 11: twenty three. We went up there for like the first
- 30:49Speaker 11: five days, which happened to be LSU's like first two games, Yeah,
- 30:52Speaker 11: which was great. Like now and now I'm like, all right,
- 30:54Speaker 11: well I'm not going up there the first half of
- 30:57Speaker 11: this thing, so like past the weekend, I think I'm
- 30:59Speaker 11: thinking about going up there for like the back half
- 31:00Speaker 11: or whatever else we can kind of get through at
- 31:02Speaker 11: that point.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Yeah, Hey, it's gonna be a tough opening match up.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Now It's like it's funny because it's like the toughest
- 31:08Speaker 4: matchup possible for both teams, for Arkansas for LSU when
- 31:12Speaker 4: you look at the field. But it is a team
- 31:14Speaker 4: Jay Minch that you had a series with earlier. You
- 31:16Speaker 4: do take two of three there, Like, does that give
- 31:19Speaker 4: you any kind of you know, mental edge over Arkansas,
- 31:23Speaker 4: Like knowing that you did take the series from them,
- 31:25Speaker 4: even though it wasn't Baton rouge, Like, is that something
- 31:28Speaker 4: you can take or is it almost like a complete
- 31:29Speaker 4: reset because these teams are different.
- 31:31Speaker 11: Now, yeah, I think you take it and the reasons
- 31:34Speaker 11: why you take it too. Listen, they played them, I
- 31:37Speaker 11: want to up to say in early May, right, like
- 31:39Speaker 11: it wasn't that long ago, it was. It's in the
- 31:40Speaker 11: back half of the SEC schedule, and I think at
- 31:43Speaker 11: the time Arkansas was rolling, they were playing really well.
- 31:45Speaker 11: That had just swept Texas I believe a week or
- 31:47Speaker 11: a week or two weeks before that. Yeah, and you
- 31:51Speaker 11: got their best shot, like they they played well against you,
- 31:53Speaker 11: and you still beat them, and you had a chance
- 31:55Speaker 11: to sweep going in a Sunday and into that game
- 31:57Speaker 11: as well. So I do think that's something that you
- 31:59Speaker 11: could kind of take the mental edge over them. Obviously,
- 32:01Speaker 11: you're not playing in bat nerves at times. That's a
- 32:02Speaker 11: little bit different for both teams. But with that being said,
- 32:06Speaker 11: like you're gonna get I would imagine, like I can't
- 32:08Speaker 11: see it happen in any other way, but I would
- 32:09Speaker 11: imagine you're probably gonna get Zach group game one. Although
- 32:13Speaker 11: Arkansas did throw gauge wood in that last game that
- 32:17Speaker 11: they played, and they only threw them for like forty
- 32:18Speaker 11: eight pitches, so I don't I'm wondering why at that
- 32:22Speaker 11: point they had gotten a big league on a big lead.
- 32:24Speaker 11: I'm wondering why they did that at that point. But
- 32:26Speaker 11: I would imagine it's gonna be Zach rupe. But this
- 32:28Speaker 11: is a game where like man I think at this
- 32:32Speaker 11: time of the year, Like I truly think at this
- 32:33Speaker 11: time of the year, it is essential for your offensive
- 32:37Speaker 11: players to perform. That your stars kind of got to
- 32:40Speaker 11: show up on that side of the ball because think
- 32:42Speaker 11: about like the pressure points if you will, and playing
- 32:45Speaker 11: in a super regional and or playing in Omaha where
- 32:48Speaker 11: it's I would much rather that pressure if you will
- 32:52Speaker 11: be spread out among nine bats in the lineup than
- 32:55Speaker 11: it for it to be all on my pitcher having
- 32:57Speaker 11: to keep teams at bay had one to two to
- 32:59Speaker 11: three runs. So, like, I think it's important that the
- 33:02Speaker 11: bats show up at this time of the year.
- 33:04Speaker 6: That way, you.
- 33:05Speaker 11: Give some room for mistake and era, and you allow
- 33:08Speaker 11: the pitcher to kind of settle in that much easier.
- 33:10Speaker 10: Yeah, it kind of seems like the bats are heating
- 33:14Speaker 10: up and are pretty hot right now, so I think
- 33:16Speaker 10: as LSU fans, we're feeling pretty good about it. Javitch,
- 33:19Speaker 10: I want to talk ask you a question that we
- 33:21Speaker 10: actually got asked in our audience chat earlier in the day. Well,
- 33:26Speaker 10: first of all, congrats on the success that you're killing it.
- 33:29Speaker 10: Love watching you out there, But we got to ask earlier,
- 33:32Speaker 10: like when teams get to get to Omaha in the
- 33:34Speaker 10: College World Series start. Do you think that they should
- 33:38Speaker 10: be reseeded?
- 33:41Speaker 11: So for me, not Omaha. Here's where I have a
- 33:44Speaker 11: problem at when it comes to that entire term. And
- 33:46Speaker 11: I do think like as easy as things to get
- 33:48Speaker 11: fixed in football when the when the noise gets loud,
- 33:51Speaker 11: I think if the same noise was around college baseball,
- 33:54Speaker 11: things will get fixed.
- 33:55Speaker 6: So you play out a fifty six.
- 33:56Speaker 11: Game schedule and then they go ahead and see regional
- 34:00Speaker 11: host sites, but they give them to what is called
- 34:03Speaker 11: the top sixteen national seeds. So when you're in that situation,
- 34:08Speaker 11: why on earth are you conceding home field advantage when
- 34:12Speaker 11: teams have to come to you. So if I'm the
- 34:13Speaker 11: number one team in a regional and there's four, right,
- 34:17Speaker 11: the higher sheet seeds should always be the higher be
- 34:19Speaker 11: the home team.
- 34:20Speaker 3: Yep.
- 34:21Speaker 6: So when you get to what was.
- 34:22Speaker 11: LSU's a game seven win all game seven in your
- 34:26Speaker 11: own regional and you're playing a number four seed, number
- 34:29Speaker 11: three seed, number two, it doesn't matter. Why is LSU
- 34:31Speaker 11: the away team? We played all season for this? This
- 34:34Speaker 11: is why you gave me the home site because I'm
- 34:36Speaker 11: the better team, so I should be getting home field
- 34:38Speaker 11: advantage at its truest form in that situation, and then
- 34:41Speaker 11: same thing goes for the super Regional. I got this
- 34:44Speaker 11: spot based off of how we performed throughout the year,
- 34:48Speaker 11: So why on earth are we switching home and away?
- 34:50Speaker 11: That doesn't make any sense to me, right, like that
- 34:52Speaker 11: just that's crazy to me, And I think that's the
- 34:54Speaker 11: kind of things I think. I'm just like that, doesn't
- 34:57Speaker 11: I get what you're trying to do. But then we
- 34:59Speaker 11: just go ahead, Why don't we just go play at
- 35:00Speaker 11: a neutral site? Then if that's what we're gonna do.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm with you there, because like the rule and
- 35:04Speaker 4: the tiebreak, it's like, okay, which team hasn't been the
- 35:06Speaker 4: home team? Like, whichever team hasn't been that, like you're
- 35:09Speaker 4: going to get it in the regional play, and look,
- 35:11Speaker 4: we know, like that could have cost you in regional play.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Like you're sitting there game number seven and you're the
- 35:16Speaker 4: away team, and sure you get your own dugout in
- 35:18Speaker 4: locker room, but still like it matters who has the
- 35:21Speaker 4: final three outs there. It didn't get kind of loud though,
- 35:23Speaker 4: So maybe Jay Mitchell, that is something that maybe might
- 35:27Speaker 4: get changed.
- 35:28Speaker 6: I hope. So I really think they need to change that.
- 35:30Speaker 11: I just think, like I said, game seven, so I
- 35:32Speaker 11: get it man, like you get your own crowd.
- 35:34Speaker 6: So like that part of it doesn't really go away.
- 35:37Speaker 11: Yeah, but think about football, if we're going into an overtime,
- 35:40Speaker 11: everybody wants the chance to pick to play defense first,
- 35:43Speaker 11: to know what.
- 35:43Speaker 6: You got to do, right, No one's choosing.
- 35:45Speaker 11: No one's truly choosing in I want to do it first,
- 35:48Speaker 11: and I have to know what I have to do
- 35:49Speaker 11: like that just that's the case of no one would
- 35:51Speaker 11: ever do that.
- 35:52Speaker 6: So like that's that's kind of where I'm at with
- 35:54Speaker 6: l No.
- 35:54Speaker 4: It's a good analogy. I like that when they're hey,
- 35:56Speaker 4: I do want to ask you though, because you've done
- 35:58Speaker 4: mean you've done it all football and baseball, so you've
- 36:00Speaker 4: gone through different grinds of you know, playing in the
- 36:04Speaker 4: SEC championship game and then a BCS national championship game
- 36:06Speaker 4: in the football sided thing.
- 36:07Speaker 3: But omaha's a different beast.
- 36:09Speaker 4: Like Omaha, if you're there and you go win a
- 36:12Speaker 4: national championship, you're there for a long time. Like what
- 36:15Speaker 4: is the most difficult part about that grind? Like when
- 36:18Speaker 4: you go you don't really know how long you're going
- 36:20Speaker 4: to be there and then if you do win that
- 36:21Speaker 4: national championship again like mentally, I know physically as well,
- 36:26Speaker 4: Like you have to be exhausted by the end of
- 36:28Speaker 4: that run.
- 36:28Speaker 3: What's that like going through the totality of Omaha.
- 36:31Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a couple of things.
- 36:32Speaker 11: The first thing you point at too, is it's a
- 36:34Speaker 11: huge point, right, like you if you win from start
- 36:37Speaker 11: to finish, you're pretty much there for like two a
- 36:39Speaker 11: little bit over two weeks, I believe, which a lot
- 36:41Speaker 11: of people don't realize. Like that's a long time to
- 36:43Speaker 11: be like completely away from the house, to be on
- 36:46Speaker 11: the road and like not be in your quote unquote routine, right,
- 36:49Speaker 11: Like it's a go while to be that situation. There's
- 36:51Speaker 11: also like when you get there, even compared to SEC stadiums,
- 36:56Speaker 11: just the first time you're probably going to a lot
- 36:57Speaker 11: of those guys are playing with like a second deck.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Now.
- 36:59Speaker 11: I know it was obviously LSU went or not even
- 37:01Speaker 11: this year because they played in Frisco, but like in
- 37:03Speaker 11: the past they played in the Shriner's Classic in Houston,
- 37:06Speaker 11: where you're finally playing with the second deck of stadium.
- 37:09Speaker 11: Like that's a different view when you're on the field
- 37:11Speaker 11: as well, like it finding the ball, continuing to keep
- 37:13Speaker 11: finding the ball in the outfield is that's something completely different.
- 37:16Speaker 11: So like that's something about it too. But I also
- 37:18Speaker 11: think the suspense and the drama of postseason baseball over
- 37:23Speaker 11: the course of two weeks, like that, once again, it
- 37:27Speaker 11: becomes a draining thing. Now it's it's great, it's a
- 37:30Speaker 11: great field, but like when the game's over, it becomes
- 37:33Speaker 11: a you come so far down it because it's I
- 37:37Speaker 11: mean the same thing like in football, man, like you
- 37:39Speaker 11: playing one game week, it's tough, but imagine like having
- 37:42Speaker 11: not just physically emotionally, having to play like three games
- 37:45Speaker 11: in one week.
- 37:47Speaker 6: That's tough.
- 37:48Speaker 11: Yeah, right, And I think all those things combined and
- 37:50Speaker 11: being able to stay disciplined focusing like on that like
- 37:53Speaker 11: short and narrow for that it's tough to do and
- 37:56Speaker 11: it makes it hard. And I think the best teams
- 37:58Speaker 11: kind of obviously end up being in being in the
- 38:01Speaker 11: end of it, because it's there's a lot of elements
- 38:03Speaker 11: in terms of staying focused that you have to do.
- 38:07Speaker 4: One of the things that for LSU that they've struggled against.
- 38:12Speaker 4: If we get into the matchup against Arkansas, you mentioned
- 38:16Speaker 4: like Newton might be the starting pitcher there. Lefties have
- 38:19Speaker 4: given LSU some trouble like in the past, and so like,
- 38:23Speaker 4: I wonder how much of that goes into all these different,
- 38:26Speaker 4: you know, decisions, and like Anthony Iinsen had a big
- 38:29Speaker 4: day against Arkansas in the regular season, Like all the
- 38:31Speaker 4: little minute changes in the lineup, that's going to be
- 38:35Speaker 4: fascinating to kind of play out there, because like this
- 38:37Speaker 4: is your one opportunity, and so like, what do you
- 38:40Speaker 4: think LSU is going to do as far as what
- 38:42Speaker 4: they do on the mound.
- 38:44Speaker 11: So I would imagine it's probably gonna be lefty lefty
- 38:46Speaker 11: matchup in that game one. I think Zach Rut's gonna
- 38:48Speaker 11: throw for them, and I'm pretty sure Kid's gonna throw
- 38:51Speaker 11: for LSU at that point.
- 38:53Speaker 6: I think it's imperative.
- 38:54Speaker 11: If you remember, go back to the Super Regional Game one,
- 38:56Speaker 11: they faced a lefty uh from why am I forgetting
- 39:00Speaker 11: the name? They faced the lefty from the team they
- 39:02Speaker 11: just played West Virginia, and his plan in that game
- 39:07Speaker 11: was he really wanted to bust all of the hitters in,
- 39:09Speaker 11: particularly the right handed hitters, and very early on in
- 39:13Speaker 11: the game you could see you kind of made the
- 39:15Speaker 11: adjustment and understood. Okay, if this is what you're gonna do,
- 39:18Speaker 11: We're just gonna really get on top of the plate.
- 39:20Speaker 11: We're not gonna give you room for era off the
- 39:22Speaker 11: plate inside, and if you miss over the plate, we
- 39:24Speaker 11: hammer you right. And that's kind of where they went,
- 39:26Speaker 11: and they were able to execute that game plan.
- 39:29Speaker 3: Like to a t.
- 39:30Speaker 6: There was five I think there was eight walks.
- 39:32Speaker 11: I think there was five hit batters, and really three
- 39:35Speaker 11: swings turned into eleven runs. Right, So, like, I think
- 39:39Speaker 11: it's gonna be imperative for them if they face Zach
- 39:42Speaker 11: Routine that game, where I would expect him to at
- 39:46Speaker 11: some level neutralized the left handed bats in that lineup.
- 39:50Speaker 11: But it's gonna take guys like Barre Jones and Stephen
- 39:53Speaker 11: Stephen Milin from the right side. Obviously it's a switch
- 39:55Speaker 11: hitter from the right side gonna take. Don't guys like
- 39:58Speaker 11: Daniel Dickinson's gonna take guys like Ethan, those guys, Luis Hernandez, those.
- 40:02Speaker 6: Guys in a lineup.
- 40:03Speaker 11: I am really interested to see how they're able to
- 40:06Speaker 11: fare against them, because I do think if you're able
- 40:08Speaker 11: to put runners on and you're able to push some across,
- 40:11Speaker 11: it makes it tough and guys like so like, we
- 40:14Speaker 11: got two weekends back to back weekends. If you think
- 40:16Speaker 11: about it, the regionals in the super regions where the
- 40:19Speaker 11: one and two ace that we have the one A,
- 40:21Speaker 11: one B. However you want to look at it, those
- 40:24Speaker 11: guys both went seven plus in the regions and it
- 40:27Speaker 11: was shut down baseball. And then when you got to
- 40:29Speaker 11: the Super regional. I'm not saying that they threw bad
- 40:31Speaker 11: at all, because it felt like to me the mark
- 40:35Speaker 11: of what an old school starting pitcher was where it
- 40:38Speaker 11: doesn't matter what the other team is scoring, you're always
- 40:42Speaker 11: keeping us in the game. So if that calls for
- 40:45Speaker 11: we scored sixteen, I believe in game one, if that
- 40:47Speaker 11: calls for you going seven and giving up eight seven runs,
- 40:50Speaker 11: so be it, because when you leave, we still have
- 40:52Speaker 11: a big lead or we're still within striking range of
- 40:54Speaker 11: winning the ball game.
- 40:55Speaker 6: That used to be what the mark of a really
- 40:57Speaker 6: good starting pitcher was.
- 40:58Speaker 11: Every time they got out out there, no matter what
- 41:01Speaker 11: the score was, they gave you a chance to win
- 41:03Speaker 11: the game.
- 41:03Speaker 6: And you saw both sides of that.
- 41:04Speaker 11: So I do think like those two guys are and
- 41:08Speaker 11: then obviously having Caden Game one, he's going to give
- 41:10Speaker 11: you a chance to win. Now, it's can you do
- 41:13Speaker 11: the little things to push those runs across across that
- 41:16Speaker 11: you need to win the ball game.
- 41:17Speaker 10: Jared, I'm always interested in diving, like into the mindset
- 41:21Speaker 10: of an athlete and like yourself being like a former
- 41:23Speaker 10: really accomplished dual dual sport athlete. In football, when you
- 41:29Speaker 10: beat somebody, it's always they always say it's hard to
- 41:31Speaker 10: beat somebody twice, like a good team twice. So you
- 41:34Speaker 10: beat beat somebody in the regular season, Okay, now all
- 41:36Speaker 10: of a sudden, I got to go play him in
- 41:38Speaker 10: a conference championship game or bowl game or whatever it is.
- 41:41Speaker 10: It's the way the adages. Man, it's always hard to
- 41:43Speaker 10: beat someone twice. Beat someone ty Well els you swept
- 41:46Speaker 10: Arkansas two to three, two out of three. That's what
- 41:48Speaker 10: they won the series. So is it the same kind
- 41:51Speaker 10: of mindset going into when you have to play somebody
- 41:54Speaker 10: again that you've already beaten in the same season, knowing
- 41:57Speaker 10: that they're a really good team. Is it kind of
- 41:59Speaker 10: the same like mental block, mental barrier hurdle that you
- 42:02Speaker 10: have to overcome that you that you did.
- 42:04Speaker 2: And in the football world.
- 42:07Speaker 11: I think it can and it can't be, and there's
- 42:10Speaker 11: two different ways of it being that way. I think
- 42:12Speaker 11: if it is, it's a to like go back to
- 42:14Speaker 11: Friday night LSU Arkansas, if you're able to get to
- 42:17Speaker 11: Zach root early, get some runner on, push some runs across.
- 42:21Speaker 11: I do think in his mind at that point it's
- 42:24Speaker 11: maybe I don't have my best stuff or all. It's
- 42:26Speaker 11: they're making it tough for me again. And then when
- 42:29Speaker 11: in that same mindset, it's if you you throw Kde
- 42:32Speaker 11: and he throws well, and the next guy you bring
- 42:35Speaker 11: out of somebody that maybe got him last time as well,
- 42:37Speaker 11: I think that same mindset starts to creep.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Well.
- 42:40Speaker 11: I do you think it changes in baseball in terms
- 42:42Speaker 11: of let's say Zach Rude goes out there and he shoves,
- 42:44Speaker 11: and then they bring out somebody that maybe LSU didn't
- 42:47Speaker 11: hit well before. That's where I think it kind of changes,
- 42:49Speaker 11: because now that dugout would feel like, oh this is
- 42:51Speaker 11: not the same this. We look different this time, right,
- 42:54Speaker 11: Like we're a different team, we got a different performance.
- 42:56Speaker 11: But when things kind of start going the way they
- 42:58Speaker 11: went before, yeah, I do think team started looking at
- 43:01Speaker 11: like all right here we go, you know, right.
- 43:04Speaker 4: All right there he is our guy, Jared Mitchell, good
- 43:07Speaker 4: enough to join us here, great form teammate of ours.
- 43:10Speaker 4: Also star at LSU Baseball SEC Network star now. J Mitch,
- 43:14Speaker 4: we appreciate the time as always. Man, if you do
- 43:16Speaker 4: make it up to omahall enjoy the experience and just
- 43:19Speaker 4: hey costs let us know the vibe.
- 43:21Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, I give you timey on a.
- 43:26Speaker 2: One hundred and forty three yards two thousand and seven.
- 43:28Speaker 3: I know right there.
- 43:29Speaker 2: J Mitch.
- 43:29Speaker 4: Absolutely, man, Hey, you're the you're the man. We appreciate it. Hey, hey,
- 43:33Speaker 4: if you just gave you a better ball, you'd at
- 43:35Speaker 4: least two hundred.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Yeard any question, I a couple of I.
- 43:40Speaker 4: Just appreciate it, man, that's all right, that's all right,
- 43:43Speaker 4: J Mitch, we appreciate it, brother, all right, boys, take
- 43:46Speaker 4: it easy.
- 43:47Speaker 3: All right.
- 43:47Speaker 4: There he is Jared Mitchell, good enough to join us here.
- 43:49Speaker 4: Get the guy a better ball. I know A couple
- 43:51Speaker 4: behind him.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Uh yeah, show.
- 43:55Speaker 12: I mean there was a game you missed the hot route.
- 43:58Speaker 12: I remember that. It was he a freshman, young, Yeah,
- 44:03Speaker 12: he's young. He was young, rich freshman freshman, maybe richer freshman.
- 44:07Speaker 12: It didn't really matter because we gotta go to break
- 44:08Speaker 12: more OTB when we come.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Back off the bench.
- 44:13Speaker 3: You know what's better than going to Omaha?
- 44:15Speaker 2: Matt, I do I know?
- 44:16Speaker 3: It's better being in omahall with a dosecis.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Lots of do secies.
- 44:22Speaker 4: Responsibly uh, tailgate in the parking lot about to watch LSU.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Versus Arkansas and some lawn chairs.
- 44:33Speaker 4: And we're not sharing those do sequis with the pigs.
- 44:37Speaker 3: These are our dosecis.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Arkansas fans probably drinking trash beer.
- 44:40Speaker 4: Yeah, probably like just you know that one that you
- 44:44Speaker 4: go in there and you buy the flat and it's like, hey,
- 44:46Speaker 4: that will be four bucks.
- 44:47Speaker 3: You're getting four buck beer. You're not getting an ice
- 44:49Speaker 3: cool dosectis.
- 44:50Speaker 2: That's what type of beer I'm about to be having.
- 44:52Speaker 3: I hate you.
- 44:53Speaker 10: A little vacation beer, a little airport beer, maybe a
- 44:57Speaker 10: beach beer. Vacation a right, so we'll be if you're
- 45:02Speaker 10: playing it on deleting some beers responsibly go for dose.
- 45:08Speaker 10: He'll pick up some dose sekis.
- 45:15Speaker 1: From players to legends, Hester and FLYNT breakdown L s
- 45:18Speaker 1: U football like only champions can.
- 45:21Speaker 4: All right, man, welcome I game OTB one four five
- 45:24Speaker 4: ESPN baton rouge.
- 45:25Speaker 3: You're on this Tuesday morning and I.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Have the legends legendary time. Man.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Sure, I mean less of the legend. Did I say,
- 45:35Speaker 3: you're saying that's where we got it from?
- 45:37Speaker 4: Mean, look, we've we've had like great guests at the
- 45:39Speaker 4: thirty Whoops. I'm not even saying we'll get better because
- 45:43Speaker 4: we probably won't.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Actually, we went pretty long before the guests.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true.
- 45:48Speaker 2: That's all nice people. We'll get better.
