- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeezer, Texas Selectionend, a Hall of Fame broadcaster, the voice of.
- 0:05Speaker 2: The Texas Longhorns, and your host of The Craigway Show.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Herry is now Craigway. All right, welcome back to the
- 0:16Speaker 1: Craigway Show. I'm like the time long one, Rod Davis.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I'll be with you for the next two days, and
- 0:21Speaker 1: so we'll talk a lot, of course about Texas football.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Anytime I'm on with you, we're gonna go behind the
- 0:25Speaker 1: burnt Orange Curtin. We'll stay behind the burnt orange curtain
- 0:27Speaker 1: talking some Texas football. We'll start talking Texas football as
- 0:30Speaker 1: a matter of fact, with yesterday being, of course the
- 0:34Speaker 1: deadline not only for the NFL declarations guys who are
- 0:39Speaker 1: declaring for the NFL Draft, but also the transfer portal
- 0:43Speaker 1: window closing officially, So we'll get into some Texas football.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Now we know at least we have some clarity about
- 0:50Speaker 1: how the twenty twenty five roster is gonna look for
- 0:52Speaker 1: the long Horns. So we'll start off talking from Texas football,
- 0:54Speaker 1: but a lot of conversation previewing the upcoming Divisional round
- 0:58Speaker 1: playoff games in the NFL. We'll do that coming up
- 1:00Speaker 1: a little bit later on the show, and they're all
- 1:02Speaker 1: types of other stories and topics that will dive into.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I want to start with because it here close to home.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Quinn was put out his official video, even though that
- 1:14Speaker 1: it was announced multiple times and the news was reported
- 1:17Speaker 1: multiple times that he was moving on to the NFL.
- 1:21Speaker 1: There were several reports and Chip Brown, a man, Chip
- 1:25Speaker 1: Brown does a great job over there at Horns twenty
- 1:27Speaker 1: four to seven. He recently here close to home, who
- 1:31Speaker 1: kind of knows the you know, he actually knows the
- 1:34Speaker 1: landscape and understands that here locally. Nobody, nobody that I
- 1:40Speaker 1: knew on the inside, who actually had some knowledge of
- 1:43Speaker 1: the situation, thought Quinn would ever hit the transfer portal
- 1:47Speaker 1: and go play for another college football team, like they.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Nobody that I talked to on the inside took that seriously. Now, nationally,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I heard everybody talking about it nationally. I heard, you know,
- 1:59Speaker 1: I heard then Kyle heard, I heard Dan Patrick, I
- 2:01Speaker 1: heard nashally. It being talked about a number of different times,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and I get it. It was a big national story.
- 2:07Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that there weren't some offers, but
- 2:11Speaker 1: the reports that were coming from close to home here
- 2:14Speaker 1: on the forty acres from people I trust. My man,
- 2:17Speaker 1: Bobby Burton does a great job over it on Texas Football.
- 2:20Speaker 1: He was telling me for the last few months, this
- 2:24Speaker 1: Quinn is not gonna play for another college. It just
- 2:26Speaker 1: ain't gonna happen. Now. I don't know if we knew
- 2:29Speaker 1: the number of the of the indecent proposals that he
- 2:35Speaker 1: would be offered, we didn't know. I don't think we
- 2:37Speaker 1: know what the value would get to. And here's why
- 2:41Speaker 1: one man, Chip Brown, comes into it. Chip Brown at
- 2:43Speaker 1: Chip Brown two four seven. He's reporting that Quinn turned down.
- 2:48Speaker 1: He turned it down, turned down an eight million dollars
- 2:51Speaker 1: in io offer to transfer instead of declining for the
- 2:56Speaker 1: NFL Draft. It's a being out for one year. I'm
- 2:59Speaker 1: because all these I'm it'd be stupid to try to
- 3:02Speaker 1: sign these guys to a multi year deal when you
- 3:04Speaker 1: can't keep him for moti years. You don't know how
- 3:05Speaker 1: it's gonna work out. So most of your nil deals
- 3:07Speaker 1: you're talking about one year, just like three scholarships were
- 3:11Speaker 1: one year renewals. You go in there every year and
- 3:13Speaker 1: go sign your scholarship again. That's what these nil deals are.
- 3:18Speaker 1: If he was being offered eight meal for one year,
- 3:20Speaker 1: he's not gonna be drafted in the first round. First
- 3:22Speaker 1: round money, you're gonna beat eight MILLI a year. I
- 3:27Speaker 1: don't know if he beat it by that much, but
- 3:28Speaker 1: you'll beat it in the second round. I mean you're
- 3:31Speaker 1: talking about but maybe as a quarterback three if he's
- 3:34Speaker 1: the first pick in the second round, three meal, three
- 3:37Speaker 1: to four meal something like that a year. So he
- 3:40Speaker 1: turned down. If my man Chip brown is accurate here,
- 3:44Speaker 1: and uh I love Chick Brownie. He does. He does
- 3:46Speaker 1: great work and he's always you know, obviously that's one
- 3:49Speaker 1: of the hardest workers, hardest guys, hardest working guys I
- 3:52Speaker 1: know in this industry. And his report is accurate or
- 3:55Speaker 1: he were close to accurate. You're talking about eight billion
- 3:57Speaker 1: dollars a year, is I don't that would set a record,
- 4:00Speaker 1: would have to set a record. I don't know if
- 4:02Speaker 1: there's any NIO deal that I've heard of that would
- 4:07Speaker 1: surpass he eight million dollar mark. And I'll say this
- 4:13Speaker 1: it is apropos because Quinn Ewers is the first NIO baby.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I mean, he left high school early, and quarterbacks cash
- 4:24Speaker 1: in on Nio more than anybody else.
- 4:26Speaker 3: He left high school early to cash.
- 4:27Speaker 1: In on nil which is why he's a young quarterback
- 4:30Speaker 1: actually coming out in the draft, which will help his
- 4:32Speaker 1: draft prospects. We can talk about that later on, but
- 4:35Speaker 1: he was one of the original, one of the ogs
- 4:39Speaker 1: of the NIL era, came out early out of high school,
- 4:43Speaker 1: then went to Ohio State, set you know, behind some
- 4:46Speaker 1: NFL caliber quarterbacks at Ohio State, and then ultimately he
- 4:50Speaker 1: transferred to Texas. And we all know if you went
- 4:54Speaker 1: to if you went to Ohio State and got the bag,
- 4:55Speaker 1: you definitely got the bag when you came to Texas.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I don't know how much money he's made in NIO dollars.
- 5:00Speaker 1: You know, he's been a multi year starter here in Texas.
- 5:03Speaker 1: The starting quarterback at Texas probably makes more NIL money
- 5:08Speaker 1: or NIL revenue, generates more in our revenue probably than
- 5:11Speaker 1: any other quarterback, a starting quarterback in college football other
- 5:15Speaker 1: than you know, maybe a Sugar Sanders there. I'm sure
- 5:18Speaker 1: there are a few exceptions to the rule, but I'm
- 5:22Speaker 1: sure they were among the top values and the top
- 5:30Speaker 1: money makers in NIL dollars every year was there. I
- 5:33Speaker 1: don't know what that means. Let's just assume it's over
- 5:36Speaker 1: a million dollars every year. So he's made good money
- 5:40Speaker 1: I mean to get a meal to go to Ohio's
- 5:43Speaker 1: Day and allegedly and get a million to go to Texas.
- 5:46Speaker 1: And then you got your private jet deals and your
- 5:49Speaker 1: car deals, and he's got all the deal he's on
- 5:51Speaker 1: television with Dr Pepper. He's making good money. So I
- 5:55Speaker 1: don't know how much he's made. Let's just assume somewhere
- 5:58Speaker 1: in the area five to seven million dollars he's already made.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And they're gonna offer him eight million just for one year,
- 6:05Speaker 1: And people say, why would you pass that up? When
- 6:07Speaker 1: you're gonna go to the NFL and you're not getting
- 6:10Speaker 1: drafted in the first round, you're getting drafted in the
- 6:12Speaker 1: second third round, and you're not gonna make that kind
- 6:15Speaker 1: of money in a year. It'll take you, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 1: you know, a half half to a third year contract,
- 6:21Speaker 1: maybe your second contract to get to that kind of
- 6:25Speaker 1: money and value. I'm saying because I don't know where
- 6:27Speaker 1: Quinn is gonna get drafted. He may still get drafted
- 6:29Speaker 1: in the first round right now, it's not looking like that.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But I'll just say this. I think for Quinn, let
- 6:37Speaker 1: I say he's one of the original nil uh nil
- 6:41Speaker 1: babies in the in the in the NIL era, so
- 6:43Speaker 1: he knows how it works him. Him and his people,
- 6:46Speaker 1: his circle, Uh, they have a you know, they have
- 6:49Speaker 1: a really good understanding of the NIL world and they
- 6:54Speaker 1: think about value, and Quinn yours has I think thought
- 6:58Speaker 1: about long term and short term value in terms of
- 7:01Speaker 1: his athletic skills and him as a quarterback and if
- 7:06Speaker 1: he's gonna end up being a franchise quarterback in the league,
- 7:09Speaker 1: all those things being considered. I think the reason ultimately
- 7:11Speaker 1: he did not go to another university or another collegetball program,
- 7:15Speaker 1: even with the eight million dollar offer, which I would
- 7:18Speaker 1: assume it's got to be some kind of record breaking
- 7:20Speaker 1: offer unless I've seen something else. Maybe there's a higher
- 7:23Speaker 1: number out there, and we all these things are speculation,
- 7:26Speaker 1: rumor and conjecture. I think it's because he wanted he
- 7:29Speaker 1: didn't want to be seen as a mercenary, as the
- 7:32Speaker 1: original Nio baby. He wanted to be considered a lone corn.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I think what it's also done, and maybe he would
- 7:40Speaker 1: have if he went, say he went somewhere else, went
- 7:42Speaker 1: to another school, so he went to another name, or
- 7:45Speaker 1: you know, went to Oregon or whatever. Just they he
- 7:47Speaker 1: went to another school and started there for a year
- 7:51Speaker 1: for the eight million dollars or whatever it was going
- 7:53Speaker 1: to be. And yeah, most of his you know, most
- 7:58Speaker 1: of his time, his tenure in college would have been
- 8:00Speaker 1: with a long corn. So he would have been seen
- 8:02Speaker 1: as most as a loanhorn. But you know there would
- 8:06Speaker 1: have been I think some that would have seen them
- 8:09Speaker 1: more as Oh no, he was just an io mercenary,
- 8:11Speaker 1: went to three different spots, just want to go make
- 8:13Speaker 1: go maximize and make the most money. Even though I'm
- 8:15Speaker 1: sure that's not true. I think he wanted it to
- 8:18Speaker 1: be seen as a longhorn. I think that's part of it.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I think part of it is now I'm a long
- 8:22Speaker 1: one and I'll be one of the greatest loan qbs
- 8:25Speaker 1: in Texas football history, whether you're talking about behind Vy
- 8:29Speaker 1: of course, behind Cote McCoy. You know, some people will
- 8:33Speaker 1: throw James Street up there ahead of him if you
- 8:35Speaker 1: want to go pre modern era and Bobby Lane and
- 8:39Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. But he's gonna go down top five.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And I can tell you right now that has value
- 8:47Speaker 1: once you're done playing. Its value when you're when you
- 8:52Speaker 1: considered a longhorn. When I came up with the term
- 8:55Speaker 1: lifetime longhorn. That's because I was thinking about the brand
- 9:00Speaker 1: and the power of the brand and the value of
- 9:02Speaker 1: the brand. You want to be considered a low horn.
- 9:05Speaker 1: You want to go down as a loan hoorn. So
- 9:07Speaker 1: when you're done playing, whenever that is, could be could
- 9:10Speaker 1: be thirty eight, could be twenty eight, no matter, could
- 9:14Speaker 1: be forty something. That is the hope. But no matter
- 9:17Speaker 1: what it is, you're gonna live in Texas. Nice to
- 9:20Speaker 1: be considered a lonehorn. The most affluent fan base or
- 9:25Speaker 1: one of the most affluent fan bases in college football,
- 9:27Speaker 1: definitely in the top five, and you're revered, respected and
- 9:32Speaker 1: beloved within that community. I know some of y'all got
- 9:37Speaker 1: some harsh critiques and you have very mixed emotions about Quinn.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But when it's all settled, when it's all said and done, man,
- 9:47Speaker 1: there's no doubt he accomplished a ton at Texas and
- 9:50Speaker 1: got to Final four back to back years, and I still, yeah,
- 9:55Speaker 1: didn't reach his ceiling. I mean, I think that's that's
- 9:57Speaker 1: a good thing for him now moving forward, is that
- 10:00Speaker 1: I don't think anybody thought he reached his ceiling here
- 10:02Speaker 1: in Texas. I mean, there's still some meat on that
- 10:06Speaker 1: Bone as well. There should be as a as a
- 10:08Speaker 1: young player, don't. I don't know how Quinn's story is
- 10:10Speaker 1: gonna end. But fourth and thirteen beating Bama, I mean, people,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I mean, other than Vy beating USC, give me a
- 10:22Speaker 1: more oppressive win for a quarterback that Texas in the
- 10:26Speaker 1: modern era. I'm sure James Street has some maybe maybe
- 10:31Speaker 1: going back to Bobby Lane. So I haven't done the
- 10:36Speaker 1: research on that, because you know so. I remember there's
- 10:38Speaker 1: the Game of the Century or whatever, Texas versus Arkansas
- 10:43Speaker 1: back in the day, So maybe that's in that conversation.
- 10:45Speaker 1: V Y in Texas beating USC give me a more
- 10:50Speaker 1: impressive win than Quinn beating Bama on the road, beating
- 10:56Speaker 1: Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa, and not just beating Nick saving
- 10:59Speaker 1: in Tuscal, beating him by double digits.
- 11:04Speaker 3: I mean, no other quarterback had ever.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Done it, not Nick Saban's dynastic run. Nobody ever went
- 11:11Speaker 1: into Tuscaloosa and put a double digit put a double
- 11:16Speaker 1: digit loss and double digit l on Nick Saban.
- 11:20Speaker 3: That was a nice win. I don't there are a
- 11:22Speaker 3: lot of.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Qbs at Texas don't have wins that impressive against the goat.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Then fourth and thirteen. So he's got these legacy moments. Now.
- 11:33Speaker 1: You know, when I try to argue for Chris Simms,
- 11:35Speaker 1: who left Texas as top five, winning his quarterback at
- 11:38Speaker 1: Texas and had stealings in the record books, I can
- 11:41Speaker 1: go look at it for a lot of great achievements.
- 11:44Speaker 1: You know, you gotta look at People want to know
- 11:46Speaker 1: what the legacy moments are.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Did he beat Oklahoma?
- 11:49Speaker 1: Right? Did he win in a Big twelve? Did he
- 11:51Speaker 1: win a Big Twelve championship? Need those legacy moments Coats got,
- 11:56Speaker 1: you know, legacy moments like that, we're you know, big
- 11:59Speaker 1: wins over and in that two thousand and eight season, Hell,
- 12:01Speaker 1: they had like, you know, like four or five of
- 12:03Speaker 1: those types wins in that in that season over ranked teams,
- 12:09Speaker 1: really good teams, really good quarterbacks. I mean, I might
- 12:11Speaker 1: even the best year in the history of the Big Twelve,
- 12:14Speaker 1: and you know Texas had Texas won their fair share
- 12:18Speaker 1: against everybody except Texas take down the stretch. Different conversation
- 12:21Speaker 1: for a different day, But in terms of wins, most
- 12:23Speaker 1: impressive wins that we've seen from a Texas quarterback, that Bama,
- 12:27Speaker 1: that win at Alabama for Quinnon, it's hard to find.
- 12:31Speaker 1: It's hard for you to. You ain't gonna find me
- 12:34Speaker 1: three or four wins better than that win for a
- 12:38Speaker 1: Texas football program. I mean, send it to me at
- 12:41Speaker 1: Rod Bay resented Twitter. First, give me a win that's
- 12:43Speaker 1: better than that win other than Vy and Texas went
- 12:47Speaker 1: over usc Like I said back in the day, James Street,
- 12:51Speaker 1: you know that kind of stuff. You know, I've went
- 12:53Speaker 1: over Arkansas win. You know, wins to win a national title. Yes,
- 12:57Speaker 1: those could be in that conversation. That's a big win.
- 13:00Speaker 1: We just got to the playoffs. So you want to
- 13:02Speaker 1: say bold games every more than that. But yeah, bold
- 13:06Speaker 1: games were exhibition games. We all know that now going forward.
- 13:11Speaker 1: So I'll get that to Quinn too. He's got legacy
- 13:13Speaker 1: moments now that if you're a Quinn fan, now you've
- 13:15Speaker 1: got something to argue with. Now you got something that
- 13:17Speaker 1: you know when somebody throws it out, Oh man, I
- 13:19Speaker 1: think Quinn was overrated, they say, hey, fourth and thirteen,
- 13:22Speaker 1: Hey man, he beat Alabama, beat Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa.
- 13:28Speaker 1: So that's kind of Quinn's no, no, no in legacy in
- 13:31Speaker 1: the nutshell. But I say he'll be more appreciated after,
- 13:35Speaker 1: you know, he's done that decade or so from now.
- 13:38Speaker 1: But right now, everybody's excited about the arch era, which
- 13:40Speaker 1: we'll talk about coming up a little bit later on.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Can we I want to talk about Michael taff announced
- 13:47Speaker 1: that he was coming back, and Michael Taffins made multiple
- 13:50Speaker 1: All American teams. Now and you know that that sex
- 13:55Speaker 1: As secondary best secondary in the country last year proved
- 13:58Speaker 1: it again. I was listening to an inn with the
- 14:02Speaker 1: third string cardinal take the third string, third string, but
- 14:05Speaker 1: he's the third wide receiver for Ohio State, and he said,
- 14:09Speaker 1: we didn't think you was talking about Texas said, we
- 14:11Speaker 1: didn't think that they would alter their game plan. We
- 14:15Speaker 1: thought they had so much confidence in their secondary, in
- 14:17Speaker 1: their corners, they would try to play them straight up
- 14:19Speaker 1: and wouldn't roll coverage or rotate to safeties or bracket guys.
- 14:25Speaker 1: They did Texas road coverage bracketed drums Smith took him
- 14:28Speaker 1: out of the game. He had one catch for three yards,
- 14:30Speaker 1: but they got hurt by other guys. But that secondary,
- 14:33Speaker 1: you know, one of the things that said to the
- 14:34Speaker 1: part it's one of the greatest secondaries in Texas football history,
- 14:37Speaker 1: is the kind of the football like Q of the secondary.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I mean they were they were just sing me. They
- 14:41Speaker 1: don't have a lot of coverage bus. They didn't have
- 14:43Speaker 1: a lot of coverage bus. They were just very sound
- 14:45Speaker 1: in their coverage play mostly zone, but you never really
- 14:49Speaker 1: saw them have, you know, these weak spots in their zone.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And that's because they they were as high minded as
- 14:57Speaker 1: any group that I've watched. And the big part of
- 14:59Speaker 1: that is Mike Taff and Jday Baron, which we'll get
- 15:02Speaker 1: to next second. I got a question about Jada Baron.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I want to ask you guys, but Michael Taff's legacy
- 15:06Speaker 1: and he still is coming back, and we'll hear from
- 15:09Speaker 1: Michael Taff as to why he came back, because I
- 15:11Speaker 1: think that's a big part of I don't think people
- 15:12Speaker 1: people got to misunderstand why he came back. I do
- 15:15Speaker 1: a podcast with Third and Longhorns with my man, Kozie Whitaker,
- 15:21Speaker 1: Derrick Johnson, Jeremy Hughes. It's a good group. We have
- 15:24Speaker 1: a lot of fun, and Michael Taff joined us and
- 15:28Speaker 1: told us why I think he came back to Texas
- 15:31Speaker 1: before he made the announcement.
- 15:33Speaker 3: This was actually this past offseason.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Well, we'll get to that audio on the other side,
- 15:36Speaker 1: and we'll also post a question about Jday baron All
- 15:40Speaker 1: Time Great now at Texas after winning the Thorpe Award.
- 15:43Speaker 1: We'll get into that tour on other side. All of
- 15:45Speaker 1: that and more when we come back right here on
- 15:47Speaker 1: The Gregway Show on AM thirteen. All right, welcome back
- 15:49Speaker 1: to the Greig Way Show. I'm love time long one,
- 15:51Speaker 1: Rod Babies. I promise we'll get to NFL discussion, especially
- 15:55Speaker 1: next hour. We'll dive deep into it through some previews
- 15:58Speaker 1: of division around, talk about the coaching carousele in the league.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Tom Brady recruiting the top coaching candidate for a lot
- 16:08Speaker 1: of teams right now, and right now the reports are
- 16:13Speaker 1: he might be close to actually finalizing the deal, that
- 16:17Speaker 1: he actually may get it done.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Ben Johnson one of the front runners.
- 16:21Speaker 1: For that job with the Raiders, and I didn't think
- 16:25Speaker 1: of all the jobs out there that he would be
- 16:27Speaker 1: even the least bit interested in the Las Vegas Raiders.
- 16:32Speaker 1: But I think Tom Brady's got that, you know, he's
- 16:35Speaker 1: got that type of swag to him. All Right, So
- 16:37Speaker 1: we'll get to that. We'll talk about that, We'll get
- 16:39Speaker 1: into the other coaching vacancies. We'll talk about the Cowboys.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Of course, in the latest with the reports as relates
- 16:47Speaker 1: to the Cowboys coaching search, Robert Salad now being a
- 16:50Speaker 1: name that's mentioned, I believe they did a request and
- 16:52Speaker 1: if you killing Moore, we knew that was coming. So
- 16:54Speaker 1: we'll get to that coming up. But let's get back
- 16:56Speaker 1: to Texas football for a second, because I'm going to
- 16:59Speaker 1: do my DEBU rankings all time DBU rankings at Texas,
- 17:03Speaker 1: myself included, and I usually, I mean, I think it
- 17:08Speaker 1: got to fifty. I'm outside the top twenty by the way,
- 17:11Speaker 1: just so you know, so I'm not I'm not pumping
- 17:13Speaker 1: myself up to be something that I wasn't on the
- 17:16Speaker 1: forty acres. I'm also out the top of twenty, so
- 17:19Speaker 1: and I think I'm getting bumped down again based on
- 17:21Speaker 1: some of the most more recent additions to my DBU rankings,
- 17:25Speaker 1: and I hadn't done it in a few years just.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Because honestly, I don't know if it was warranted.
- 17:30Speaker 1: I don't know we had secondary I know we had
- 17:33Speaker 1: defenders who were going to impact by DBU rankings list
- 17:37Speaker 1: enough for me to have to reveal an all new
- 17:40Speaker 1: one and come up with an all new rankings. But
- 17:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it this year. I'm gonna dive deep
- 17:44Speaker 1: into it, and it's based on your accomplishments on the
- 17:46Speaker 1: forty acres. And my first, really, I think, really the
- 17:54Speaker 1: first big issue that I'm running into that I'm pondering
- 18:00Speaker 1: is by Mount Rushmore of DBU. And it's a simple
- 18:03Speaker 1: Mountain Rushmore, and it has been pretty simple for years now.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I'd really hadn't I hadn't had to worry about the
- 18:10Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore of it. My top four all time Johnny Johnson, Oh,
- 18:15Speaker 1: I mean Johnny Johnson, one of the all time greats, right,
- 18:18Speaker 1: I mean consensus, uh, all American again, beca two time
- 18:23Speaker 1: unanimous All American. Actually, I believe Jerry Gray all right, obviously,
- 18:31Speaker 1: Jerry Gray, the Jerry Carroll era of DBU, all right,
- 18:35Speaker 1: two time contents is All American and Jerry Gray's and
- 18:38Speaker 1: that was before the Thorpe Award, which was given to
- 18:40Speaker 1: the which is given to the best defensive back in
- 18:42Speaker 1: college football. So Jerry Gray and Johnny Johnson, that's on
- 18:45Speaker 1: the Mount Rushmore hard. It's gonna be hard for anybody to,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you know, to be able to leap for all those guys.
- 18:52Speaker 1: So they're pretty much mainstays there and have been. But
- 18:56Speaker 1: Michael Huff Huff Daddy. Oh and by the way, congrats
- 18:59Speaker 1: to Michael, because Michael Huff recently has been inducted into
- 19:03Speaker 1: the College Football or at least he will be inducted
- 19:06Speaker 1: into the College Football Hall of Fame that was announced.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I believe yesterday that he's gonna be in the most
- 19:12Speaker 1: the latest class in the College Football Hall of Fame,
- 19:15Speaker 1: and it is a star study class. Honestly, I thought
- 19:17Speaker 1: Michael Huff was already in there. So the only reason
- 19:19Speaker 1: I was surprised is what I was like, Oh, I
- 19:21Speaker 1: thought he was already in there. So it's a no brainer.
- 19:23Speaker 1: He was gonna be a College Football Hall of Famer anyway,
- 19:26Speaker 1: Just like I said, it was all about the timing
- 19:29Speaker 1: of it. And he's going in.
- 19:30Speaker 3: With some other great players like, oh.
- 19:35Speaker 1: How Graham Harrell's going in with him, Michael Strahan's going in,
- 19:38Speaker 1: Michael Vick is going into this class to coaches going in,
- 19:42Speaker 1: Nick Saban's going in, Urban Meyer's going in. So pretty
- 19:44Speaker 1: sure I study and Nick and Mike, you know, Mike Cuff.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Michael Huff is one of those guys, no question. So
- 19:49Speaker 1: he's on the mountain Rushmore because he won the Thorpe
- 19:52Speaker 1: and won a national title, and then you got Aaron Ross,
- 19:54Speaker 1: who also won of Thorpe won a national title, and
- 19:57Speaker 1: that's pretty much been the Mount Rushmore. And I don't
- 20:01Speaker 1: know if because it's all about what you did, what
- 20:04Speaker 1: you've done at Texas and your accomplishment. I don't know
- 20:07Speaker 1: if Jday.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Baron has is if its season or his career.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I should say more anything merits him, leap frog and
- 20:14Speaker 1: one of the guys originally in the top four on
- 20:17Speaker 1: the Mount Rushmore. So that's kind of the question, you know.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I mean, I'll throw it out there, hit me up
- 20:22Speaker 1: at rod Davers Indie Twitter Verse. If I was going
- 20:26Speaker 1: to put Jday Baron on the Mount Rushmore, who do
- 20:29Speaker 1: I take off? Johnny Johnson, Jerry Gray, Michael Huff, Aaron Ross.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I mean, who would I take off? That's the quest.
- 20:39Speaker 1: That's the first thing after ponder is it? And right
- 20:43Speaker 1: now I'm just I am leaning toward him just being
- 20:46Speaker 1: number five, just right there outside the top four, right
- 20:50Speaker 1: outside the Mount Rushmore. But he could when I finished
- 20:53Speaker 1: my research, because it's back the stats. It's about you know,
- 20:56Speaker 1: how you played in big games and your accolades and
- 20:59Speaker 1: achievement in the national awards and all that kind of stuff.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Maybe when I added all up today, Baron, maybe you
- 21:06Speaker 1: know he's a dark horse and ends up cracking that
- 21:08Speaker 1: top four.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Right now, it's hard. It's hard for me to see it,
- 21:12Speaker 3: all right.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Another comment my man CB at Chris GB double zero,
- 21:18Speaker 1: double zero two thousand in the Twitter verse, he pointed
- 21:22Speaker 1: out when I was asking about the big games quarterbacks
- 21:24Speaker 1: who won big games at Texas, don't forget about James Brown,
- 21:27Speaker 1: he said, nineteen ninety six Big twelf Championship game, Texas
- 21:30Speaker 1: beating two time defending national champion Nebraska thirty seven twenty
- 21:34Speaker 1: seven to win the first ever Big twelve championship. And
- 21:38Speaker 1: in ninety five in College Station, Texas beat Aggie and
- 21:42Speaker 1: ended their thirty one game home winning streak to win
- 21:46Speaker 1: the final Southwest Conference championship. It's a good point, CB, now,
- 21:50Speaker 1: good point, ay, right? Those are big those are big ones. Yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 1: I know what I'm saying. I'm sure there are some
- 21:55Speaker 1: other examples of it. No doubt I would put Quinn's
- 21:59Speaker 1: win over Labama right there in that same discussion. But
- 22:02Speaker 1: it's a good point though about you know, James Brown,
- 22:04Speaker 1: James Brown, He's definitely in that conversation of the most
- 22:07Speaker 1: underrated Texas quarterbacks considering what he achieved at Texas. They're
- 22:12Speaker 1: they're no doubt one championships, one, big games, had the clutch, gene,
- 22:18Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. Appreciate that, CV. All Right,
- 22:21Speaker 1: another nugget I want to get to before we start
- 22:25Speaker 1: talking about some NFL topics.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Okay, So Michael Taff.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Came back and he's gonna be your starting safety, of
- 22:33Speaker 1: one of your starting safety for that twenty twenty five
- 22:35Speaker 1: season after becoming an All American. I mean, it's probably
- 22:39Speaker 1: the greatest story for a walk on in history of
- 22:42Speaker 1: Texas football. And I'm not talking about the Ricky Williams
- 22:47Speaker 1: walk ons, right, the guys who got drafted then or
- 22:50Speaker 1: I mean Corn Cosmy might have been one of those
- 22:52Speaker 1: guys too, who got drafted to play Major League baseball
- 22:55Speaker 1: first and then technically walked on or played another sports.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Was a track athlete, you know that walked on the
- 23:00Speaker 1: football like Mark he's good one or something like that.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I don't know that. Don't give me those technicalities. I
- 23:06Speaker 1: don't want the technicalities. Okay, I want a true walk
- 23:10Speaker 1: on story. And you know why nobody can give me
- 23:12Speaker 1: a better walk on story because we don't keep up
- 23:14Speaker 1: with the walk Ons.
- 23:18Speaker 3: I've asked historians.
- 23:20Speaker 1: I'm the only the late great Bill Little probably put
- 23:23Speaker 1: the only one that could have shined the light on
- 23:25Speaker 1: this and actually given us some information about it.
- 23:27Speaker 3: But I've asked, you know.
- 23:29Speaker 1: As many analysts and as many recruiting experts, and as
- 23:37Speaker 1: many Texas football historians, and most of them amateurs, amateur
- 23:41Speaker 1: Texas with wall historians, can you name me a great
- 23:44Speaker 1: story about a walk on at Texas football history? And yeah,
- 23:48Speaker 1: they throw out this story or that story, but none
- 23:51Speaker 1: of them are better than Michael Taff going from walk
- 23:55Speaker 1: on to All American. No, no, there's no story better
- 24:01Speaker 1: than that. There's no walk on story better at Texas
- 24:04Speaker 1: football history. And he's coming back to kind of add
- 24:06Speaker 1: to the legacy. But why he's coming back. Some people said, well,
- 24:09Speaker 1: he had his best season, and the NFL usually, you know,
- 24:13Speaker 1: it's like a lottery ticket, right, You want to cash
- 24:15Speaker 1: a lottery ticket when you got it, and you want
- 24:18Speaker 1: to hit the NFL when your draft stock is as
- 24:21Speaker 1: hot as its going to be. And this is as
- 24:22Speaker 1: high as it's been for Michael taff. Our assumption is
- 24:24Speaker 1: it won't go higher, but maybe it could. But we
- 24:27Speaker 1: spoke to.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Michael Taff on Third and Longhorn.
- 24:30Speaker 1: This was earlier this year, and I think there's another
- 24:35Speaker 1: reason that maybe we're discounting as to why Michael taff
- 24:38Speaker 1: might have come back to Texas. Because he does bleed orange.
- 24:40Speaker 1: There's no doubt about that. And I think there's some
- 24:43Speaker 1: unfinished business for Michael Taff. Here is a taff on
- 24:46Speaker 1: third Loanhorn don't know it.
- 24:47Speaker 2: You got to always remember your why when you're in
- 24:50Speaker 2: the winter, when you're in the summer, and I have.
- 24:53Speaker 3: A why, but I also have a bigger why.
- 24:56Speaker 2: When I'm at Texas and I have the burnt orange on,
- 24:59Speaker 2: I got a I got to put back where Texas
- 25:02Speaker 2: was always been. And it's not just winning the Big
- 25:05Speaker 2: teph Championship and making it to the college Football playss.
- 25:07Speaker 1: It's to win a national championship.
- 25:10Speaker 2: And every day that I work out, whenever I get
- 25:12Speaker 2: discouraged or something like that, I just need a simple
- 25:15Speaker 2: reminder you're at the University of Texas, your dream and
- 25:18Speaker 2: you're fighting to go win a national championship. That's all
- 25:21Speaker 2: I needed, And no matter if I was a walk on,
- 25:23Speaker 2: no matter if I started as an equipment manager or
- 25:25Speaker 2: I was a five star quarterback. That's all the motivation
- 25:28Speaker 2: I needed besides my individual wise and so that's really
- 25:32Speaker 2: what it came down to. When coach getting and gave
- 25:34Speaker 2: me that call, that was all in the back of
- 25:36Speaker 2: my mind was like, man, I get a chance to
- 25:38Speaker 2: go try to flip the narrative of Texas and change
- 25:42Speaker 2: all this five and seven talk, but flip it to
- 25:44Speaker 2: you know, now seventeen and oh national champions, SEC champions. Like, man,
- 25:51Speaker 2: if I can do that for myself, that's a done deal.
- 25:54Speaker 1: So that was kind of the main emphasis. All right,
- 25:59Speaker 1: that's my Taff on the third Longhorns podcast. So in
- 26:02Speaker 1: addition to you know, draft Stock, I think he's worried
- 26:05Speaker 1: about trying to win a national title for Texas. That's
- 26:07Speaker 1: why Lowhorn fans are big Michael Taff fans. All Right,
- 26:10Speaker 1: we come back. We'll get into what the twenty twenty
- 26:12Speaker 1: five roster for Texas may end up looking like, especially
- 26:16Speaker 1: now that we are past the transfer a portal window
- 26:18Speaker 1: and the NFL declarations are done as well, so we'll
- 26:23Speaker 1: talk about what twenty twenty five looks like. For the
- 26:25Speaker 1: Lonehorns a little bit all that more right here on
- 26:27Speaker 1: the Greig Way Show, right here on AM thirteen hundred.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show.
- 26:32Speaker 1: I am Rob Babers right here, sitting in for Craig
- 26:35Speaker 1: Way for the rest of the week. So we appreciate
- 26:37Speaker 1: Craig Waite giving us the opportunity. But I want to
- 26:40Speaker 1: get back to some Texas football conversation. We'll talk NFL
- 26:42Speaker 1: on the other side. I predicted earlier this year, like
- 26:48Speaker 1: early on, I'm talking about early last year. I should say,
- 26:51Speaker 1: forgetting to twenty five has already happened. But I predicted
- 26:54Speaker 1: early last year that when Archie Many became to starting quarterback,
- 26:58Speaker 1: that he would be on the c wrote the College
- 27:00Speaker 1: Football video game, you know, within his within his two years,
- 27:05Speaker 1: that he's going to be the starter of Texas. Uh,
- 27:08Speaker 1: they say they're going to and now they said it
- 27:10Speaker 1: has announced the College Football twenty twenty six will be
- 27:13Speaker 1: released this summer. Uh, they made that announcement. And I
- 27:19Speaker 1: don't I don't know who in college football, of course
- 27:22Speaker 1: who is in the running to be on the cover.
- 27:25Speaker 1: But something tells me arch Manning's got a really good
- 27:28Speaker 1: chance to do it. If that is the case, that
- 27:31Speaker 1: would give you back to back. That's the only thing
- 27:34Speaker 1: that might hurt him actually is the fact that Quinn
- 27:37Speaker 1: was on the cover of the video game of the
- 27:38Speaker 1: A Sports collg Football video game last time around, and
- 27:43Speaker 1: this time around. They may not want to seem like
- 27:46Speaker 1: they're too you know, too lenient when it comes to
- 27:52Speaker 1: Texas athletes, like they're favoring Texas athletes over other athletes.
- 27:56Speaker 1: But it is a Manning first family of football. It
- 28:00Speaker 1: just seemed like it was a you know brainer at
- 28:02Speaker 1: one point it was going to happen. We'll see if
- 28:04Speaker 1: it happens for the twenty twenty five college football video game,
- 28:07Speaker 1: because I just saw that announcement to come out there
- 28:09Speaker 1: all right to talk about Texas speaking of twenty twenty five,
- 28:11Speaker 1: talking about the twenty twenty five roster, the official NFL
- 28:15Speaker 1: Draft declarations from underclassmen, because that window now is closed.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Quhen Yours, Jaydon Blue, Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond, Kelvin Banks,
- 28:23Speaker 1: and Cam Williams all on offense, Trey Moore has decided
- 28:30Speaker 1: to stay. That was something else that I think broke
- 28:33Speaker 1: today too, that he's decided to stay with yesterday we
- 28:35Speaker 1: found out DJ Campbell it was the only member of
- 28:38Speaker 1: the offensive line that you're going to bring back. So
- 28:40Speaker 1: you have to replace four starters there. You gotta replace
- 28:42Speaker 1: your quarterback, got to replace one of your weapons on
- 28:46Speaker 1: front of call, Jaydon Blue just are running back considering
- 28:48Speaker 1: how he was weaponized. You got to replace Jaydon Blue,
- 28:50Speaker 1: got to replace two of your starting wide receivers at
- 28:52Speaker 1: Matthew Golden and Isaiah Bond. And you got to replace
- 28:54Speaker 1: your two tackles of course too. So it's and you're
- 28:58Speaker 1: starting tight end. Gunnhelm is obviously not an underclassman, but
- 29:02Speaker 1: Gunnahelm also going see you replacing a lot on the
- 29:06Speaker 1: offensive side of the ball. But like I said, the
- 29:08Speaker 1: future is bright with Arch Manning and Bryan Wingo and
- 29:12Speaker 1: some of the other pieces you're bringing back Offensively, trefor
- 29:14Speaker 1: Gooseby's another guy I think long run fans are really
- 29:17Speaker 1: excited about. On the offensive line, proved he could play
- 29:19Speaker 1: right and left tackle this year. On defense, Trey Moore
- 29:22Speaker 1: is staying around, So you're gonna have got Trey Moore's
- 29:25Speaker 1: last eight games. I don't think long run fans really
- 29:29Speaker 1: understood how effective he was those last eight games. Actually
- 29:34Speaker 1: no last seven games. So your last seven games twenty pressures,
- 29:40Speaker 1: six and a half sacks, ten tackles for lost, three
- 29:43Speaker 1: forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and seventeen total tackles. The
- 29:51Speaker 1: more effective that pass rush became, and the more effective
- 29:55Speaker 1: Colin Simmons really became, especially in that NASCAR package which TRADYE.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Moore was in two and I'll go, look, I bet
- 30:01Speaker 1: a lot of those sacks came in that NASCAR package
- 30:03Speaker 1: they did. They had to, you know, leave him to
- 30:06Speaker 1: one on one blocking assignments, and he can beat one
- 30:09Speaker 1: on one blocking assignments, but you may not be the beat,
- 30:12Speaker 1: you know, when they if the offensive line decides to
- 30:16Speaker 1: slide protection his way, or they're a running back out
- 30:19Speaker 1: there to chip them, or there's a tight end that
- 30:20Speaker 1: he's got to go around first and a tight end
- 30:22Speaker 1: wants to bump them. That may be a little bit much,
- 30:24Speaker 1: you know, for and Trey Moore not and he can't
- 30:27Speaker 1: do it. But he may not have all those splash
- 30:29Speaker 1: plays when it comes to that, but he starts to
- 30:31Speaker 1: get those splash plays late in the season. So you'll
- 30:33Speaker 1: have the best edge one of the best edge rooms
- 30:35Speaker 1: in the country with Colin Sims, Trade Moore, You'll have
- 30:38Speaker 1: Colin Vas you know those, Ethan Burke.
- 30:40Speaker 3: You have some really good players on the edges for you.
- 30:44Speaker 1: At the secondary level, or at least the second level
- 30:47Speaker 1: of the defense. You'll have Anthony Hill and Lafoule at linebacker.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Both of those guys are back. That's a really good
- 30:53Speaker 1: sign for you. You'll in the secondary, you'll get Michael Taff,
- 30:56Speaker 1: as we mentioned, and I think Taff wants to be
- 30:58Speaker 1: a draft pick. I think he wants to come complete
- 31:00Speaker 1: the greatest walk on story in Texas football history by
- 31:03Speaker 1: going from walk on to draft pick, which I don't
- 31:07Speaker 1: know if that's ever happened. Don't give me the technicalities
- 31:09Speaker 1: about Ricky Williams and those kind of guys. I'm talking
- 31:12Speaker 1: about a you know, a walk on that actually ends
- 31:15Speaker 1: up based working their way into being an NFL draft pick.
- 31:18Speaker 3: I think that's his goal.
- 31:19Speaker 1: I think, as we just played the audio from third
- 31:21Speaker 1: Longhorns winning a national title is his goal. That he
- 31:24Speaker 1: wants to do those two things. And I don't know
- 31:27Speaker 1: if he was sure he was going to get drafted,
- 31:29Speaker 1: because maybe some NFL coaches still, of course, maybe question
- 31:34Speaker 1: whether it was an aberration him this season. I think
- 31:37Speaker 1: obviously want to see him do it, you know, back
- 31:39Speaker 1: to back seasons, play at a really high level, and
- 31:42Speaker 1: then they're still the testing, right, you know whether he
- 31:46Speaker 1: would test well. We still don't know that there's the
- 31:49Speaker 1: stereotype of the white safety.
- 31:50Speaker 3: It's gonna hurt him, right, I'll talking about it all
- 31:53Speaker 3: the time.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Low Hun fans even hate on Blake Gideon and Dylan
- 31:56Speaker 1: Haynes and hey, no Michael Tafford. I remember Lowland fans
- 32:00Speaker 1: hate no Michael to have to and I used to
- 32:02Speaker 1: always say listen when loan when when the white safety
- 32:05Speaker 1: is about their logan fans always end up hating knowing
- 32:07Speaker 1: the white safety. Don't know what it is. But Blake
- 32:09Speaker 1: just started more games the end of the player in
- 32:11Speaker 1: Texas football history. Uh, Dylan Haynes is like top five
- 32:14Speaker 1: all time in interceptions at DBU, and Michael Tafwan from
- 32:17Speaker 1: walk on to All American. Some Longland fans steal hate
- 32:21Speaker 1: know them things the bomb. So I think he's got
- 32:24Speaker 1: two goals, win a national title and becoming the NFL
- 32:27Speaker 1: draft pick. I don't know if he accomplished bost but
- 32:29Speaker 1: I just think that that's his goal with the secondary,
- 32:31Speaker 1: especially with the safeties. That's gonna be a strength. Jeli
- 32:34Speaker 1: McDonald back there. You got Derek Williams coming back off
- 32:36Speaker 1: the injury. Uh, Jonah Williams coming in. Save your feel
- 32:39Speaker 1: so for me, uh, they're loaded there, so you didn't
- 32:41Speaker 1: have any departures that we that were unplaying. My Malik
- 32:44Speaker 1: Muhammad is still expects to be there at the other
- 32:46Speaker 1: corner as well, and we'll see maybe Kobe Black, where
- 32:49Speaker 1: I think is gonna be the the corner potential that's
- 32:51Speaker 1: gonna be the starter opposite Malik Muhammad. But you've got
- 32:54Speaker 1: a lot of pieces on defense offense. There's gonna be
- 32:57Speaker 1: a lot of new faces. But the most famous of
- 33:01Speaker 1: those whose famous that will be arch Manny. We'll talk
- 33:03Speaker 1: about that too. But coming up next, let's get into
- 33:04Speaker 1: the NFL. Let's talk about the coaching vacancies and the
- 33:06Speaker 1: coaching carousel. Let's preview the Texans and the Chiefs all
- 33:09Speaker 1: that more when we return right here on the Craigway Show,
- 33:11Speaker 1: right here on AM thirteen hundred the Zone. All right,
- 33:14Speaker 1: welcome back to the Craigway Show. I am not Craigway,
- 33:18Speaker 1: even though at times I wish I was. Craigway. But
- 33:21Speaker 1: I don't have the intellect, the recall, or the overall talent.
- 33:24Speaker 1: So I appreciate Craig just let me sit in for
- 33:26Speaker 1: him for a couple of days here on the Craigway
- 33:28Speaker 1: Show while he's out and about. You can reach out
- 33:31Speaker 1: to me at Rod Daberson's for the Verse anytime you
- 33:34Speaker 1: want to connect with me today.
- 33:37Speaker 3: But I'll get into some NFL discussion here.
- 33:39Speaker 1: We talked a lot about the Longhorns and the players
- 33:42Speaker 1: who are departing, the forty acres, the transfer portal window closing,
- 33:47Speaker 1: what that twenty twenty five roster's gonna look like. Also,
- 33:49Speaker 1: Quinn yours reportedly turning down eight million dollars in an
- 33:56Speaker 1: NIO deal to transfer to another college football school. That
- 33:59Speaker 1: was portabaull Manchip Brown over at Horns twenty four to seven,
- 34:02Speaker 1: and I wouldn't looked it up. Listen, if you are
- 34:05Speaker 1: drafted in to say, your first pick in the second round,
- 34:10Speaker 1: If you're one of the first picks in the second round,
- 34:12Speaker 1: which is kind of where Quinn projects right now, you
- 34:15Speaker 1: can expect to make nearly ten million dollars in your
- 34:19Speaker 1: four year rookie contract. That according to spot Track, which
- 34:22Speaker 1: as to Mace, the first pick of the second round,
- 34:24Speaker 1: will pull in just under ten million dollars, while the
- 34:28Speaker 1: next eight players picked will make north of nine million.
- 34:33Speaker 1: That's what spot track says, and my man Chip Brown
- 34:36Speaker 1: says that Quinn yours turned down an eight million dollar
- 34:39Speaker 1: nil deal offer to transfer and declare for the NFL draft,
- 34:44Speaker 1: and some people are saying, bad business decision, terrible business decision.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Shouldn't have made that business decision. You know, if you're
- 34:52Speaker 1: gonna make ten million, let's say ten to twelve million
- 34:55Speaker 1: in four years in the NFL, you should take the
- 34:59Speaker 1: eight million in one that you can make. You can
- 35:03Speaker 1: very well make that argument because then you'll still be
- 35:05Speaker 1: able to go to the NFL, and then maybe you'll
- 35:07Speaker 1: increase your draft stock too, Like maybe you'll actually increase
- 35:10Speaker 1: your draft stock and be able to go to the
- 35:11Speaker 1: first round and make even more money.
- 35:14Speaker 3: There's also injury, so there's the injury risk you're throwing
- 35:17Speaker 3: there too.
- 35:17Speaker 1: There's also the there's a chance you could drop your stock,
- 35:22Speaker 1: that your stock could actually be damaged by going out
- 35:25Speaker 1: there and playing again. So it is a roll the dice,
- 35:29Speaker 1: I think, ultimately, for Quinn, who transferred from Ohio State
- 35:33Speaker 1: to Texas member. He's the original, He's the nil og
- 35:37Speaker 1: right before nil was really a really mainstream commonplace thing,
- 35:44Speaker 1: which it is today now and everybody discusses it openly
- 35:48Speaker 1: and it is a huge factor in recruiting and talent
- 35:51Speaker 1: acquisition and talent retention. He left school early to go
- 35:57Speaker 1: capitalize on NIO dollars and then transferred from whole state
- 36:02Speaker 1: to Texas. I'm sure got another bag of ini own money.
- 36:06Speaker 1: I don't know how much he's made. He was a
- 36:08Speaker 1: three year starter at Texas, and Texas quarterbacks make as
- 36:11Speaker 1: much as any definitely more than most quarterbacks in the
- 36:17Speaker 1: country when it comes to their NIO earnings. So he
- 36:20Speaker 1: made a lot of money in Texas. So, you know,
- 36:22Speaker 1: maybe the eight million, I know, eight millions a lot
- 36:24Speaker 1: of money. I'm not saying it ain't a lot of money,
- 36:26Speaker 1: but he's definitely made at least five to six million.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Can we all agree with that. He's probably in that range,
- 36:31Speaker 1: if not more, we don't know, which is all speculation,
- 36:35Speaker 1: and so maybe it wasn't all about the money for him.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I'm not disputing that. Maybe that was a questionable business decision.
- 36:43Speaker 1: But he's going to the NFL, all right, he'll make
- 36:47Speaker 1: that ten take said ten twelve million over that four
- 36:49Speaker 1: year period on that contract. And I think it mattered
- 36:54Speaker 1: to Quinn that he be seen as a long corner.
- 37:00Speaker 1: If he goes somewhere else, he will be seen as
- 37:02Speaker 1: a mercenary inn ilew mercenary. Nothing wrong with that, by
- 37:05Speaker 1: the way. Lot a players fine with that, and they are,
- 37:09Speaker 1: but there is still.
- 37:11Speaker 3: A powerful allure.
- 37:13Speaker 1: And I think it is something that for some players,
- 37:19Speaker 1: it is a connection that they that they want to
- 37:23Speaker 1: cultivate all right, all throughout their careers. And when Quentin
- 37:26Speaker 1: gets done, he wants to live in Texas, and I
- 37:28Speaker 1: think he wants to be seen as a Texas long wran.
- 37:30Speaker 3: He wanted to come to Texas.
- 37:30Speaker 1: He was committed to Texas before you know the Tom
- 37:33Speaker 1: Herman situation, and then he decommitted and goes to a
- 37:36Speaker 1: house state.
- 37:37Speaker 3: I think he always wanted to be a long horn.
- 37:38Speaker 3: I think it matters to.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Him, and not that not that if he goes somewhere else,
- 37:44Speaker 1: nobody will ever connect him to the long hooint brand. Again,
- 37:47Speaker 1: of course he will be connected to the Longhoint brand,
- 37:49Speaker 1: but not everybody will see him as Oh no, Quiteers
- 37:53Speaker 1: is a long horn nobody sees Queen Years as a
- 37:54Speaker 1: buck eye. Nobody there's a long horn, and I think
- 37:59Speaker 1: that matters to him, And so I think that I'm
- 38:03Speaker 1: not saying that was a big part of this decision,
- 38:05Speaker 1: but I think it actually played a part in it
- 38:09Speaker 1: that No, I want to I want to leave it
- 38:13Speaker 1: better than I found it, and I want to be
- 38:15Speaker 1: a lifetime Longhorn. When I came up with the term
- 38:18Speaker 1: lifetime longhorn, it was because of the power of the
- 38:20Speaker 1: brand and the value of the brand. And everybody wants
- 38:23Speaker 1: to be a lifetime longhand will say like it, all
- 38:24Speaker 1: want to be a lifetime lohorn, will have to be
- 38:26Speaker 1: a legendary lifetime longhorn. And Quinn was very, I think,
- 38:30Speaker 1: very close to being a legendary lifetime longhorn. And he's
- 38:33Speaker 1: got fourth and thirteen. He will always have fourth and thirteen.
- 38:37Speaker 1: He'll always have that win over Bama. Not a lot
- 38:40Speaker 1: of quarterbacks in Texas can say they got to win
- 38:42Speaker 1: that big and fourth and thirteen and everybody knows what
- 38:46Speaker 1: it means fourth and thirteen. Yeah, you're right. Every Quinn
- 38:51Speaker 1: hater ever will always have to at least give you that.
- 38:57Speaker 1: If you're a if you if you're a paying that
- 38:58Speaker 1: argument about Quinn, you go, man for thirteen, They go, yeah,
- 39:00Speaker 1: you're right. I was. That was actually pretty impressive. Yeah,
- 39:05Speaker 1: it took a lot of testicular fortitude game on the line.
- 39:08Speaker 3: That was a clutch gene moment right there.
- 39:10Speaker 1: So he's got that, you know, And I argue for
- 39:12Speaker 1: for sim Sim's over, I don't. I don't have that
- 39:15Speaker 1: moment to argue for Sim's like that that, Oh he's
- 39:16Speaker 1: got the he's got four to thirteen.
- 39:19Speaker 3: Well, everybody knows exactly what.
- 39:20Speaker 1: You're talking about, so, uh, Quinn, you know, giving up
- 39:23Speaker 1: eight million dollars, we'll, you know, we'll talk more about it.
- 39:27Speaker 1: But I think ultimately for Quinn, he's been at least
- 39:31Speaker 1: those I know close to him, they've always said he's
- 39:35Speaker 1: going to the league. Nobody that I know is an
- 39:39Speaker 1: insider that's close to the situation ever actually seriously entertained
- 39:44Speaker 1: him going elsewhere now that they know the price tag
- 39:46Speaker 1: would grow up to eight million dollars. I don't know
- 39:48Speaker 1: if anybody do that, but nationally it's been like Dan
- 39:51Speaker 1: Patrick and Colin Coyle Hurd and the national narrative that, oh, man,
- 39:54Speaker 1: Quinn's will gonna be offered big money, and I think
- 39:57Speaker 1: he got offered big money. That's what Chip Brown's reporting.
- 39:59Speaker 1: But those close so all things can be true. Those
- 40:02Speaker 1: close to the situation that I know, they told me
- 40:06Speaker 1: he ain't going he ain't going no worse. He's gonna
- 40:09Speaker 1: end his career as a long horning college and he's
- 40:11Speaker 1: going to the league. And that's what happened. He's going
- 40:15Speaker 1: to the league. Speaking of the league, let's talk about
- 40:17Speaker 1: the league a little bit. Uh oh no, before we
- 40:20Speaker 1: tell that Fourth and thirteen. So we're talking about fourth
- 40:22Speaker 1: and thirteen. This is great. So Matthew Golden was on
- 40:25Speaker 1: the third and Longhorns podcast.
- 40:26Speaker 3: I do.
- 40:27Speaker 1: It's great. Alex Okerfer is on there, Jeremy Hills, Fozzy Whitaker,
- 40:31Speaker 1: Derrick Johnson. It's really fun. They bring in a lot
- 40:34Speaker 1: of different special guests from man Nick Shuley does a
- 40:36Speaker 1: great job on there. It's really really fun. And they
- 40:38Speaker 1: had Matthew Golden on there recently and I couldn't be
- 40:41Speaker 1: there for this one, and it hurts my hearts. I
- 40:43Speaker 1: wanted to ask some questions for Matthew Golden, who turned
- 40:46Speaker 1: out to be the number one wide receiver Texas and
- 40:48Speaker 1: Darrel Jeremiah, who watched film on Matthew Golden, said he
- 40:51Speaker 1: thinks Matthew Golden can be the top receiver taken in
- 40:53Speaker 1: the draft. Like that I did not see, but I
- 40:57Speaker 1: will admit he don't have a lot of weaknesses in
- 40:59Speaker 1: his game. And nobody increased their draft stock. I'm talking
- 41:02Speaker 1: about nobody in the country increased their draft stock more
- 41:04Speaker 1: than Matthew Golden did the last four or five games
- 41:07Speaker 1: of the season. And so, Ronald, would you have this ready?
- 41:13Speaker 3: So he was on fourth and loan.
- 41:14Speaker 1: A third Longhorn, excuse me, and he was talking about
- 41:16Speaker 1: fourth and thirteen and I didn't even know this, But
- 41:20Speaker 1: turns out the fourth and thirteen, hell Man. Not only
- 41:23Speaker 1: was it a clutch play by Quinn, the clutch call
- 41:26Speaker 1: by Sark, but Matthew Golden he had to battle through
- 41:31Speaker 1: some adversity on that play. And listen to him describe
- 41:35Speaker 1: it to you. Here's Matthew Golden on third and longn Like,
- 41:38Speaker 1: where are your eyes? Do you realize that he's exabering Outfred?
- 41:40Speaker 1: Do you realize he's flat footed? Yeah?
- 41:42Speaker 4: I seen, Yeah, That's what I seen in preaching that reed.
- 41:45Speaker 4: So when I stuck him and I looked and I
- 41:47Speaker 4: seen the safety.
- 41:48Speaker 1: It was nobody you know where you're going?
- 41:50Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you aiming right at the middle of the zone.
- 41:54Speaker 1: The zone I see you. Then I go up. You
- 41:57Speaker 1: know the ball's coming. It's just about locating the ball, right.
- 42:01Speaker 1: You almost out ran the football.
- 42:03Speaker 4: Yeah, because look when I looked, you know, I got advisor.
- 42:07Speaker 4: So when I looked at the light was right in
- 42:09Speaker 4: my eyes.
- 42:10Speaker 1: So I seen it last minute.
- 42:12Speaker 4: Nobody know that I've seen it last minute, and I
- 42:14Speaker 4: just I hadn't said. Nobody know that exclude right there.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I'm like, man, he almost out ran that ball.
- 42:24Speaker 3: So you located late, and that's why the.
- 42:26Speaker 4: Hands from you know what I'm saying, That's why he
- 42:28Speaker 4: was down there. Yeah, I mean I know I had
- 42:31Speaker 4: Once I had it, you know, I turned around and man,
- 42:33Speaker 4: I ain't know what the thing.
- 42:34Speaker 1: I just I was like, man, we got it. You
- 42:36Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, We got it? Like where are
- 42:38Speaker 1: your eyes? Do you realize that? Back you go? Then
- 42:41Speaker 1: on the third Long Horse podcast, saying, yeah, he didn't
- 42:44Speaker 1: locate the ball too late. That's why he did bobble
- 42:46Speaker 1: it a little bit. I think it was to the
- 42:49Speaker 1: catch up on Some people disputed that he bobbed a
- 42:51Speaker 1: little bit late. I think he located late, and it
- 42:53Speaker 1: turns out the glare was in his eyes. Oh man,
- 42:55Speaker 1: could you imagine the situation if he had dropped the
- 42:59Speaker 1: ball because the ball the glarres in his eyes. So, ma,
- 43:01Speaker 1: if you go to man showing more and more, he's
- 43:03Speaker 1: got the clutch gene and that's why he's gonna be
- 43:05Speaker 1: one of the top receivers taking in upcoming draft. All Right,
- 43:07Speaker 1: speaking of the draft, has talk NFL. On the other side,
- 43:10Speaker 1: I talk NFL coaching vacancies. Aaron Glenn is one of
- 43:13Speaker 1: the hot names. He's a defensive coordator for the Detroit Lions.
- 43:16Speaker 1: He's one of the hot names out there. He brought
- 43:18Speaker 1: up something that I thought was really interesting that really
- 43:22Speaker 1: got me thinking about a theory that I once had
- 43:25Speaker 1: about the best coaches in the NFL and if I
- 43:27Speaker 1: was choosing a coach, a trait that I would look for.
- 43:29Speaker 1: And also, why don't they do this more with head
- 43:32Speaker 1: coaches in the NFL because it does seem to work.
- 43:36Speaker 3: We'll discuss that and Ben Johnson.
- 43:38Speaker 1: To the Raiders. Potentially it would prove once again that
- 43:42Speaker 1: Tom Brady's the goat. All of that and more right
- 43:44Speaker 1: here on the Craigway Show. Right here coming up next
- 43:46Speaker 1: right here on AM thirteen hundreds of zone. All right,
- 43:48Speaker 1: welcome back to the Craigway Show here on AM thirteen
- 43:52Speaker 1: hundreds of zone. I'm life time, oh Horn. Rode Berbery
- 43:54Speaker 1: was sitting in for craig Way a little bit. Let's
- 43:56Speaker 1: talk NFL head coaching vacancies. The I think some of
- 44:02Speaker 1: the more intriguing headlines right now are coming out of
- 44:05Speaker 1: Las Vegas. It is being reported that the Las Vegas
- 44:11Speaker 1: Raiders may be wooing Ben Johnson, who is considered the
- 44:16Speaker 1: top candidate for any head coaching vegacy, who is the
- 44:19Speaker 1: office of coordinator right now for the Detroit Alliance. And
- 44:23Speaker 1: the world on the street is is that Tom Brady
- 44:27Speaker 1: and he have had conversations and that Ben Johnson is
- 44:34Speaker 1: pretty you know, enamored with tom Brady's pitch or maybe
- 44:39Speaker 1: just because Tom Brady is Tom Brady, and that the
- 44:42Speaker 1: Raiders are now a dark horse to get Ben Johnson,
- 44:45Speaker 1: and some people are saying right now they're a favorite
- 44:49Speaker 1: to get Ben Johnson. Nothing's confirmed, but nobody even saw
- 44:53Speaker 1: that they would be in the mix. And this is
- 44:56Speaker 1: when the Tom Brady association. He helps you if you're
- 45:01Speaker 1: the last Vegas Raiders. Now you're on the Lost Vegas Raiders.
- 45:03Speaker 1: You're the Raiders, number one, the Raids. So you don't
- 45:06Speaker 1: need you know what I mean, You don't need much.
- 45:08Speaker 1: You don't need a bump from anybody. All Right, you're
- 45:10Speaker 1: the Raiders. You got historical clout, and you're in Vegas,
- 45:16Speaker 1: so you're in the glamorous city. All right, You're sexy
- 45:19Speaker 1: enough in that regard. But looking at the roster, and
- 45:22Speaker 1: nothing really sexy about the Raiders roster.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Nothing really sexy about the.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Raiders situation being in the AFC West, right, that's an
- 45:31Speaker 1: ugly situation. That is, even if the roster had some
- 45:37Speaker 1: I don't know very if the roster did have some
- 45:40Speaker 1: very attractive elements to it, which I don't know if
- 45:42Speaker 1: it has that many. The brock Bauers one is interesting,
- 45:46Speaker 1: love Brock Boss the Beast. But other than that, if
- 45:49Speaker 1: you're gonna look at you gotta play in the AFC West,
- 45:51Speaker 1: So you gotta go up against Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. Now,
- 45:56Speaker 1: Andy Reiding gonna be there forever. Andy Reid's getting older,
- 45:58Speaker 1: maybe' spags takes a job, But You're still gonna deal
- 46:02Speaker 1: with Brett Beach, the best GM arguably in the NFL,
- 46:05Speaker 1: and deal with Patrick Mahomes, the best quarterback in the NFL.
- 46:07Speaker 1: And quarterbacks play into their forties now and play pretty
- 46:10Speaker 1: well into their forties.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Tom Brady knows that bred to anybody.
- 46:12Speaker 1: So you're going to deal with that. That ain't sixy.
- 46:16Speaker 1: And then Sean Payton, who I think is one of
- 46:18Speaker 1: the better coaches in the NFL. You got to deal
- 46:20Speaker 1: with him. He got a young quarterback bow Knicks who
- 46:22Speaker 1: he likes. He made the playoffs. That's gonna be a
- 46:25Speaker 1: problem for it. They ain't no easy win. And then
- 46:27Speaker 1: you got John Harball. I'm sorry, Jim Harball got one
- 46:30Speaker 1: of the hornballs. You got Jim Harball, who is I mean,
- 46:33Speaker 1: that's a ball coach just won a National talent in college,
- 46:36Speaker 1: has already coached a team to a super Bowl in
- 46:38Speaker 1: the NFL. Everybody knows Jim Harball and coach Ball, and
- 46:42Speaker 1: that guy is just coming off a playoff, a playoff
- 46:46Speaker 1: game as well. So you got three playoff teams in
- 46:50Speaker 1: that division right now, and one is the best team
- 46:54Speaker 1: in football, period.
- 46:57Speaker 3: So that's a hell of a sales pitch.
- 46:58Speaker 1: By Tom Brady. Now we know Tom Brady can recruit.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Go look at his ex wife, Go look at the
- 47:06Speaker 1: Hollywood starletts that he's all right been associated with. Mc
- 47:10Speaker 1: brown used to always say, I'll never hire a coach
- 47:13Speaker 1: who's got an unattractive wife because that means he can't recruit. Well,
- 47:19Speaker 1: Tom Brady, if that applies in terms of recruiting, the
- 47:22Speaker 1: man can recruit. And if he ends up getting Ben
- 47:24Speaker 1: Johnson all right and getting big just to agree to
- 47:27Speaker 1: play the Chiefs twice a year and Andy Reid try
- 47:31Speaker 1: to win the chess match against Andy Reid twice a year.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Sean Payton twice a year, and Jim Harball, two coaches
- 47:38Speaker 1: who have won the Super Bowl, and another coach wo's
- 47:40Speaker 1: been to a Super Bowl and one of the best
- 47:41Speaker 1: coach in the history of football at any level. And
- 47:44Speaker 1: then Andy Reid a top five coach all time, and
- 47:46Speaker 1: another Super Bowl winning coaching Sean Payton, and teams who
- 47:49Speaker 1: have young quarterbacks, good young quarterbacks. Justin Herbert bo Knicks
- 47:54Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes, the best quarterback in the league, said that
- 47:58Speaker 1: is the hell of a sales pitch. And then we
- 48:00Speaker 1: all got to get some props to we gotta get
- 48:04Speaker 1: some props to Tom Brady. Not only is he the
- 48:05Speaker 1: goat on the field all right, and has you know,
- 48:10Speaker 1: had many beautiful Hollywood starlets and supermodels all right in
- 48:16Speaker 1: his uh you know, on his on his roster, if
- 48:19Speaker 1: you will.
- 48:20Speaker 3: But now he's gonna prove that, no, indeed, that he's
- 48:23Speaker 3: worth every.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Basically every penny that the Raiders are gonna pay him,
- 48:28Speaker 1: and he's worth all of the trouble of making him
- 48:31Speaker 1: a minority owner with that franchise, even though there's a
- 48:35Speaker 1: lot of conflicts of interest because he's also calling games
- 48:38Speaker 1: for Fox. Now that he's worth every penny and he's
- 48:40Speaker 1: worth all the trouble and all the headaches if they
- 48:42Speaker 1: get Ben Johnson, because that will be all Tom Brady,
- 48:45Speaker 1: because they ain't got nothing unless he just likes Vegas
- 48:47Speaker 1: about likes Vegas that much, dude. I just came. I
- 48:50Speaker 1: came from I went to Vegas last year for the
- 48:52Speaker 1: Super Bowl.
- 48:53Speaker 3: Vegas is awesome. Who won't staying Vegas bore in like two.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Or three days. Even if you got a great job
- 48:58Speaker 1: in Vegas, that's a great job. But I don't know
- 49:01Speaker 1: if being a coach in the AFC West is a
- 49:04Speaker 1: great job. But Tom Brady, that's how you know that
- 49:06Speaker 1: that man can recruit. We shall see that that is
- 49:09Speaker 1: the scuttle. But if you will other coaches. Speaking of coaches,
- 49:14Speaker 1: I was just talking about Sean Payton as one of
- 49:17Speaker 1: the coaches in that division that if Ben Johnson agrees
- 49:20Speaker 1: to take that job with the Raiders, heed to be
- 49:22Speaker 1: going up against uh. You know. One of the things
- 49:25Speaker 1: that's interesting that about Sean Payton, Sean Payton was traded.
- 49:29Speaker 1: You know what. This is one of those things people
- 49:31Speaker 1: don't think about a lot that Sean Payton was actually
- 49:32Speaker 1: a coach that was traded from the Saints to the Broncos.
- 49:38Speaker 1: And I remember at the time saying, man, that's a
- 49:41Speaker 1: great move. That's a great move to trade for Sean Payton.
- 49:46Speaker 1: And I know it was because you know, he wanted
- 49:48Speaker 1: to go there and he wanted out and the Saints,
- 49:49Speaker 1: you know, they wanted to move on and they wanted
- 49:52Speaker 1: to get some returning investment. I get all the technicalities,
- 49:55Speaker 1: I get all that, but in the history of the NFL,
- 50:01Speaker 1: there hadn't been a lot of coaches that have been traded, really.
- 50:06Speaker 3: In the last twenty five years.
- 50:09Speaker 1: Over the last twenty five plus years, there have been
- 50:11Speaker 1: like seven coaches that have been traded. Of basically seven
- 50:16Speaker 1: deals involving big name head coaches to be traded. And
- 50:24Speaker 1: Bill Parcells was traded ninety seven. Mike Holmgren, Bill Belichick
- 50:30Speaker 1: was a trade, John Gruden was a trade, Herm Edwards
- 50:35Speaker 1: was a trade, Bruce Arians was a trade. Sean Payton
- 50:37Speaker 1: was a trade. Now that didn't happen a lot. Like
- 50:40Speaker 1: I said, I don't have all of the listed trade
- 50:44Speaker 1: of head coaches over the years, and you know, I'm
- 50:50Speaker 1: sure there are other examples of it going horribly wrong.
- 50:54Speaker 3: But I always say a lot of the trades have
- 50:55Speaker 3: worked out.
- 50:56Speaker 1: I wonder why they don't do it more often. I mean,
- 50:59Speaker 1: of the seven trades here that have happened recently for
- 51:02Speaker 1: big name head coaches, three of them won Super Bowls.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Bill Belichick won Super Bowl, John Gruden won a Super Bowl,
- 51:11Speaker 1: and if you go look at ye, Bruce Arians won
- 51:15Speaker 1: a Super Bowl. John Gruden and Bill Belichick those are
- 51:17Speaker 1: three Super Bowl winners. Now, Bill Parcelles didn't win it
- 51:20Speaker 1: with the Jets, but I believe they got to I'm
- 51:24Speaker 1: not mistaken. I thought they got to the AFC Title Game.
- 51:28Speaker 1: I could be mistake. I believe they got to the
- 51:29Speaker 1: AFC title game. Mike Holmgren went to a Super Bowl
- 51:33Speaker 1: with the Seahawks. So after seven, four went to a
- 51:37Speaker 1: Super Bowl, three won a Super Bowl. Bill Parcells coached
- 51:40Speaker 1: in an AFC title game, and Sean Payton got the
- 51:43Speaker 1: Broncos to the playoffs in where like his second year,
- 51:47Speaker 1: I mean, the only one that really just didn't work out.
- 51:50Speaker 1: Among those, the most high profile of those head coach
- 51:53Speaker 1: trades the NFL was herm Edwards. Harm Uss was traded
- 51:57Speaker 1: for a fourth round pick from the Jets to the Chiefs.
- 52:00Speaker 1: Speaking of the Chiefs, and they haven't cost they haven't
- 52:04Speaker 1: cost a lot of draft cap leaves. Now, Bill Parcells,
- 52:06Speaker 1: that was a first round pick, a second round pick,
- 52:08Speaker 1: a third and a fourth. That's a lot, I think,
- 52:11Speaker 1: and some cash considerations. That's a lot. Mike Comgrean went
- 52:14Speaker 1: for a second round pick. Bill Belichick was Now, that
- 52:16Speaker 1: was costly. That was the first, a fourth, and the seventh.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Well worth it now in retrospect, John Gruten, that was expensive.
- 52:23Speaker 1: That was two first round picks and two second round picks.
- 52:26Speaker 1: But you did win the Super Bowl like immediately after that,
- 52:29Speaker 1: because remember John Gruten knew all the plays. Uh, and
- 52:33Speaker 1: the Raiders never changed the place. And they played the
- 52:36Speaker 1: Bucks in the Super Bowl and they never changed the place.
- 52:39Speaker 1: And then John Gruten figured out midway through the first quarter,
- 52:42Speaker 1: Oh these dopes, they haven't changed the place. They still
- 52:45Speaker 1: running my place with my hand signals. Guys, I can
- 52:50Speaker 1: tell you what they're running, just that easy. And then
- 52:53Speaker 1: they blew out the Raiders, so they worth every penny.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Bruce Arians went for a sixth round pick and the
- 53:01Speaker 1: Bucks got a seventh in exchange, so that was really nothing.
- 53:03Speaker 1: That was pretty much a wash. And Sean Paygnon went
- 53:06Speaker 1: for a first round pick and a second round pick.
- 53:08Speaker 1: Broncos got a third round pick in exchange. We'll see
- 53:10Speaker 1: if that works out too. I would you know, we
- 53:13Speaker 1: used to be traded. Mike Tomlin needs to be traded.
- 53:15Speaker 1: I would trade for Mike Tomlin. If I was looking
- 53:18Speaker 1: for a coach right now, I would trade for Mike
- 53:21Speaker 1: Thomain because I know what Mike Tommin needs. He just
- 53:22Speaker 1: needs a quarterback. Mike tomin gets a quarterback. Mike Thomas
- 53:25Speaker 1: don't get you to the playoffs. No matter what your
- 53:27Speaker 1: quarterback situation is. You get a quarterback for Mike Tomblin.
- 53:30Speaker 1: That'll put you over the top, make you a Super
- 53:33Speaker 1: Bowl contender. He needs a quarterback. If you got a
- 53:35Speaker 1: quarterback and all you need is a head coach, trade
- 53:38Speaker 1: for Mike Tomlin. I remember saying that about petition for
- 53:41Speaker 1: the Texans before they hired to Miko rans And I
- 53:43Speaker 1: love to meet go because he's won two playoff games
- 53:45Speaker 1: in his first two years, and he and CJ are great.
- 53:48Speaker 1: But I try to trade for Mike Tomlin with the Stealers,
- 53:50Speaker 1: trade you Mike Tomlan. That's a different discussion. I don't know.
- 53:53Speaker 3: I know they're looking for a way out because.
- 53:55Speaker 1: They think that now they have kind of hit their
- 53:58Speaker 1: ceiling with Mike Tomlin and that maybe they can't get
- 54:02Speaker 1: over the hump now with Mike Toumblin as a franchise.
- 54:04Speaker 3: But the Salors don't just fire coaches.
- 54:06Speaker 1: They don't. I mean, they've had like three coaches in
- 54:08Speaker 1: the last fifty sixty years or something. That's not what
- 54:11Speaker 1: they do.
- 54:12Speaker 3: But trade for a coach. I would trade for Mike Tumblin.
- 54:15Speaker 1: I would speaking on Mike tomin Mike Tomlin is a
- 54:18Speaker 1: special coach for a specific reason.
- 54:20Speaker 3: I'll tell you why.
- 54:21Speaker 1: On the other side because Aaron Glenn, who's a coaching
- 54:24Speaker 1: candidate in this coaching carouseles cycle, he brings up something
- 54:27Speaker 1: about himself, bragging about his skill set as a coach,
- 54:31Speaker 1: and I think it actually shed somebody on why Mike
- 54:32Speaker 1: Tomlin is so special. We'll get into that, but we'll
- 54:34Speaker 1: also talk about the Cowboys coaching vacancy. They're interviewing Killen
- 54:39Speaker 1: Moore in it. They have a permission to interview Kellen Moore.
- 54:42Speaker 1: I should say that.
- 54:43Speaker 3: So we'll get into it and talk about it. But
- 54:44Speaker 3: I'll tell you what I want the Coyleboys to do.
- 54:45Speaker 1: I've decided what I want the Dallas Coyleboys to do
- 54:48Speaker 1: at their head coaching position, and we'll dive into it
- 54:50Speaker 1: on the other side right here on the craig Ways Show,
- 54:52Speaker 1: right here on AM thirteen hundred zone. All right, welcome
- 54:54Speaker 1: back to the craig Way Show here on AM thirteen
- 54:57Speaker 1: hundred zone on Mike tom Longhorn, Rod Bavers. Let's get
- 54:59Speaker 1: back to the NFL coaching carousel a little bit, and
- 55:03Speaker 1: of course the Dallas Cowboys are at the center of
- 55:05Speaker 1: that coaching carousel. They have submitted a request to interview
- 55:10Speaker 1: Killing Moore, which makes sense. I think we all knew
- 55:12Speaker 1: that was happening. Who is now the offensive coordinator of
- 55:14Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles. Also was reported that Robert Salad now
- 55:18Speaker 1: has been added to the list for Dallas Cowboys' potential
- 55:22Speaker 1: coaching candidates. And how about this, Jane Slater reported recently.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Matter of fact, Jane Slater reported, and I saw a
- 55:29Speaker 1: report from Ed D. Edward recently too, who either confirms
- 55:34Speaker 1: her report or in addition to her report, they believe
- 55:38Speaker 1: that Jason, that Jason Witten even before the coach, before
- 55:44Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy parted ways with the Cowboys, or they mutually
- 55:47Speaker 1: agreed to part ways even before that. Jane Slater's reporting
- 55:52Speaker 1: that Jerry had planned on bringing in Jason Whitten in
- 55:57Speaker 1: a coaching capacity as a part of the agreement with
- 56:01Speaker 1: my what was to be the future proposed agreement with
- 56:05Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy, almost as a coach in waiting or coach
- 56:10Speaker 1: in training situation. I BSU not, yep, it is. There's
- 56:15Speaker 1: an audio of it. We could play it, but I'll
- 56:17Speaker 1: say it. She said it on NFL Network. Jane Slader
- 56:21Speaker 1: knows her stuff. I know, Jane, Jane's really good at
- 56:23Speaker 1: that job. And Jane's reputation is you know it, Christine,
- 56:29Speaker 1: So she says it, I believe it, And so that
- 56:33Speaker 1: would make sense as to why now there's a coaching
- 56:35Speaker 1: change and Jerry knew that he was a Jay's been
- 56:38Speaker 1: talking about Jason winning for since twenty twenty three as
- 56:42Speaker 1: a guy he thinks can be a Matt Campbell like coach,
- 56:46Speaker 1: you know, great motivator, great emotional connection with the players, players, coach,
- 56:50Speaker 1: locker room guy, that kind of thing. So yeah, if
- 56:54Speaker 1: you think he's a Dan Campbell type figure, that would
- 56:56Speaker 1: be great, because nobody saw Dan Campbell really becoming the
- 56:59Speaker 1: coach that he is. With that connection, he's the right
- 57:01Speaker 1: kind of crazy for what Detroit needs. But in addition
- 57:05Speaker 1: to her report, Edward's reporting, I believe there is a
- 57:09Speaker 1: very high probability that's depending upon whom is hired as
- 57:12Speaker 1: head coach, that Jason Whitton will be included in the staff.
- 57:16Speaker 1: There were scenarios discussed with like McCarthy when he was
- 57:18Speaker 1: hired where that could have happened, But McCarthy was understandably concerned,
- 57:23Speaker 1: perhaps remembering how Wade Phillips inherited Jason Garrett, who eventually
- 57:28Speaker 1: replaced him. So yeah, add that to the list of
- 57:34Speaker 1: drama of the things that whatever the next head coach
- 57:37Speaker 1: he's got to consider and he's got to potentially deal
- 57:38Speaker 1: with that. Jason Whitt might be a part of the staff,
- 57:40Speaker 1: whether you like it or not. And Kellen Moore was
- 57:44Speaker 1: like that, right, Kellen Moore was, let's say it was
- 57:47Speaker 1: forced on Mike McCarthy. But hey, Kellen, the Cowboys, they
- 57:51Speaker 1: when they say they like their guys, they do they
- 57:53Speaker 1: do a lot of in house promoting because the Cowboys
- 57:57Speaker 1: have a very unorthodox.
- 57:59Speaker 3: Higher and it's a very kind of obtuse.
- 58:05Speaker 1: Structure, business structure where the players can talk directly to
- 58:09Speaker 1: the owners and that kind of thing. Usually there's a
- 58:11Speaker 1: chain of command. Cowboys don't really have that. And the
- 58:13Speaker 1: Cowboys just have a very unorthodox, unconventional culture, and they
- 58:18Speaker 1: like to promote from within because they don't want people
- 58:20Speaker 1: coming from outside going that's weird. Y'all shouldn't be doing that.
- 58:24Speaker 1: That that's that's not very you know, I mean, that's counterproductive.
- 58:28Speaker 1: That's not gonna help you win championship. They don't like
- 58:30Speaker 1: it because they're a TV show first, in a football
- 58:32Speaker 1: team second, which, by the way, I'm not hating on
- 58:33Speaker 1: that because they are the most valuable sports team, more
- 58:37Speaker 1: sports franchise in the world. So it works. But you know,
- 58:41Speaker 1: their philosophy is be good or be interesting, and sometimes
- 58:46Speaker 1: it's too it's too hard to be good, so let's
- 58:47Speaker 1: be interesting and it works. Like I said, Jerry Jones
- 58:50Speaker 1: understands that this is entertainment and it is a TV
- 58:53Speaker 1: show and the Cowboys are the number one TV star,
- 58:56Speaker 1: number one TV show in America. That's why, Honestly, even
- 59:00Speaker 1: though the Kellen Moore thing makes sense, the Kellen Moore
- 59:02Speaker 1: thing makes sense because Kellen.
- 59:05Speaker 3: Moore knows how.
- 59:06Speaker 1: And I said this other day, I was like, I
- 59:08Speaker 1: don't know why they're not considering Dak Prescott's development and
- 59:12Speaker 1: Dak Prescott's ceiling when they're looking at.
- 59:16Speaker 3: Whoever the next coach is gonna be.
- 59:17Speaker 1: You gotta get who's gonna bring out the most and Dak,
- 59:19Speaker 1: who's gonna help you bring out that big Dak energy.
- 59:22Speaker 3: And you got there with Mike McCarthy.
- 59:24Speaker 1: You got that Text Coast offense, and you got big
- 59:26Speaker 1: Dak energy, best season he's ever had. If the next
- 59:30Speaker 1: coach can't get you big Dak energy, you stuck with
- 59:32Speaker 1: him for the next three four years, So you gotta
- 59:35Speaker 1: get somebody that's gonna maximize Dak.
- 59:37Speaker 3: And Dak is like I said, the Cowboys.
- 59:39Speaker 1: The Cowboys are drafting the fewest amount of quarterbacks in
- 59:41Speaker 1: the NFL since two thousand. They don't operate by drafting quarterbacks,
- 59:45Speaker 1: and they should draft more quarterbacks. Right even with Dak,
- 59:47Speaker 1: you should still be drafting quarterbacks because it's just a
- 59:51Speaker 1: healthy organizational habit.
- 59:53Speaker 3: They don't do it.
- 59:55Speaker 1: But even when they got Dak, see it still worked
- 59:58Speaker 1: out for him. When they drafted Dak, they didn't think
- 59:59Speaker 1: Dak was going to be the franchise quarterback. He was
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: behind Killing Moore, who's behind Romo, and Romo gets hurt,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: killing Morgans hurt, Dak Shu guy, and then Dak exceeds
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: expectations that becomes a franchise quarterback. But then Kellen Moore
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: was relegated to be his backup and then ultimately to
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: be his quarterback coach and then ultimately be his offensive coordinator.
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: So Dak and Kellen Moore have.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: The most unique relationship of any potential head coach oc
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: play calling quarterback in the league because nobody's had that
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: type of journey with that quarterback like he has with Dak.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: And here are the Dallas's offensive ranks across the NFL
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: in games were killing and Dak were together from twenty
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: nineteen to twenty twenty two points per game, first yards
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: per game, first yards per play, second, passing touchdowns, second,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: rushing touchdowns third from twenty nineteen to twenty twenty two.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: When they were together, now and Dak got hurt and
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff, they were a really politic offense.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: Big Dak energy. Kellen Moore brings out the big Dak energy.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: He always said Dak was a Dak was a happy
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: accident for the Cowboys. I always say he's views viagra.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: They did no viagar. What's gonna be viagral? They the
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: them finding out the benefits of viagra. The by product
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: byproduct of it was because they were looking for some
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: uh I think it was angina. They were looking for
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: some type of treatment for some heart ailment, and then
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: they end up figuring out, oh, it.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: Also does this, so you know what, let's sell that
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: that was Dak.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: They didn't expect Dak end up being a franchise quarterback
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: drafts to be a backup, third string developmental quarterback turns
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: out what a happy accident. And honestly, he's speaking of viagra.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: You're gonna need big Dak energy. Kellen Moore is the
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: it can be the viagral for your big Dak energy.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: All Right, I took that analogy too far. Let's get
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: to Aaron Glenn thing. Can we play this Aaron Glenn
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: sound Aaron Glenn, who's the defensive coordinator for Speaking of
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: dv's defensive coordinator for the Detri Alliance, he said this
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: when talking about his specific skill set, and he got
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: me to thinking as a head coach here. It is
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: one thing that.
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: I would say by myself. I'm a coach. I just
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: happened to be on defense. I understand the offense just
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: as well as a number of people. So if you
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: want to hire me, you're gonna hire a coach. You're
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: not gonna hire a defensive coach. I'm gonna talk to
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: the offense just so much I'm gonna talk to the defense.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: One thing that I've always said that if I was
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: hiring a coach, I would want a coach that had
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: experience on both sides of the ball. It's like if
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I'm hiring a lawyer, and I need a good lawyer.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: I like the lawyers who have worked also on the
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: other side of the justice system. I want them. I
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: want a guy who's got experience on both side, who's
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: that experience on both sides, they know how the other
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: side works. And I always wonder, you know, most of
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: the coaches in the NFL, they have expertise in one
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: phase of the game offense, defense.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: And that's it.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: And there are only a few coaches like John Harbaugh
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: is one of them, Mights another one of them, Sirianni's
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: another woman that have experience at the college of the
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: pro level in more than one phase of the game.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: It's only like six of those guys. You know, I
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: would look for that because that would help me if
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I think, I would have more faith that you would
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: know how to build and construct a program or organization
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: from the bottom up in the top down. So I
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: like that about Aaron Glynn. Aaron Clinton does not. He's
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: not one of those coaches though he does not have
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: a background. I believe on offense, on especially if they
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: are three phases of the game, but most people only
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: aspire to have expertise in one. And yet you want
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: to be a football coach, and then you have to,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: you know, delegate all three phases of the game. That's
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: why Belichick is special. I called the BELICHICKI and principal
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: the BELICHICKI. In theory, Belichick was the only coaches of
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: all in the history of the NFL that coached all
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: three phases. Maybe a reason why he had so much success.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: Sort of things I would look for if I was
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: hiring a head coach. All right, we come back, speaking
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: of head coaching and hirings. I'll tell you who I
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: want the Cowboys to hire. I've decided this is all
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: I want the Cowboys to hire. I'm not saying this
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: will be what's best for the Cowboys, but I think
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: it would be definitely what's most entertaining for the Cowboys.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: All that more right here on the Craigway Show, right
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: here on AM thirteen hundred. All right, welcome back to
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: the Craigway Show. I'm like talking about one ride they
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: were sitting in for Craig Way. Let's talk about the
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: Cowboys and their head coaching vacancy for a second. Here
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: of the Cowboys have requested and then if you were
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Kellen Moore. Kellen Moore makes a lot of sense. Told
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: you why because he and Dak work so well together,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: and Jerry Jones loves him from Kellen Moore, right, that's
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: a homegrown product for them, and there's a comfort level.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: And Jerry likes people that he's comfortable with, and he
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: likes people that already know how he does business. Right,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: they've already been inoculated, if you will, all right, they
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: know they know idea. Jason Widde knows how he does business,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: so Jefe SODA's Kellen Moore. That helps. You don't want
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: anybody kind of shocked by how you do business, so
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: does Dean Sanders. By the way, Dean Sanders is saying
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: that he is not using this as a negotiating tactic.
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: Adam Schefter put that out.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: There that some people think he thinks that Dion's using
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Some people think he's just using the as leverage, that
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: the conversations with the Cowboys is just leveraged so that
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: he can win negotiations or get a new contract if
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: you will. With Colorado. He says he doesn't need to
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: do that. I agree, by the way, he doesn't need
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: to leverage himself even more with Colorado. He wants a
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: new contract he can get it with Colorado. But I'll
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: I'll say this, I think Diane also understands that he's
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: a unique beast in college that he won't be in
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: the NFL. Right, A Hall of Famer coaching in college
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: is rare, like now Belichick's coaching in college now. So
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: maybe not as rare as it used to be now
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: with Dean there, But you get my point. As a
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: a athlete that reached the Hall of Fame, Belichick is
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: gonna be a Hall of Fame as well. But as
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: an athlete that reached the Hall of Fame, it's rare
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: for them to go back to the college level. Dion
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: did that. Nope, that's a rare generational thing, and it
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: gives him a universal cool factor and coolest currency in recruiting.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: He gives been a universal cool factor that no other
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: coach in college football can can compete with in that way.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: They can't compete with Deon's cool factor. They're just not
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: coole as then who very few are, right, So he
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: appeals to young people in a way that makes even
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: Colorado now seem cool. I like Colorado. When I was
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: coming out, Colorado was among my top five schools. It
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: was Colorado, Texas, Texas A and m Florida State and
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Penn State. So it did have a cool factor back then,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: but it lost his cool factor. Dion brought it all
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: back and made it cool again. And he has that,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: like I said, unique elements and that unique alure in college.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: He does not have that NFL Hall of Famous coach
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: all the time. The NFL, that's where they go to
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: coach and it recruiting is a non factor at the
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: NFL level, and recruiting is really because he's kind of
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: a one man showing recruiting. Man, that's something you don't
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: need at the NFL level too. Now he can't just
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: coach ball. And I'm saying he can't coach ball, uh
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: that But that's what it will be about at the
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: NFL level. And at this point, since Man the cole
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: which is right now, it seems like some of the
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: reports have them settling on killing more, which would work
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: for Dack and you know maybe at Jason Whitten.
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: Bill by the way, Bill Belichick has.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Not signed his deal. That has also been reported that
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Bill Belichick has not signed his deal. That's also interesting,
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: so maybe Bill Belichick is now back on the list.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: He has not signed his deal. Robert Salad now being interviewed,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: and these are these are all reasonable, very sound choices.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: The Bill Belichick thing makes a lot of sense, I do.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: I'm concerned about who Bill Belichick would hire as his
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: old c anytime you're hiring a defensive minded coach, got
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: to be weary about who they're going to pick and
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: what offensive philosophy they are going to pair up with
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: that struggle. Robert Salo had that issue, all right with
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: the Jets. Bill Belichick had that issue late after Tom
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: Brady left, because that was Tom Brady was the executive
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: of that offense, and it was his offense. And you know,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: I just think often times that can be a struggle
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: for defensive minded guys. Ben Johnson, who we talked about
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: right now, a lot of momentum for him going to Vegas,
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: which it's questionable, but hey, Tom Brady, that's why he
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: used to go. It's got a hell of a sales pitch.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Some people are thrown out John Gruden out there. I
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: don't know about John Gruden. I think it may be
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: a little past John Bruden's John Gruden's time, but hey,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: John Gruden is a guy who's won a Super Bowl.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: He already came up on the show early we talked
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: about coaches that were traded. Then he got Lincoln Rally
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: and Kellen Moore, and people bring up Doug Peterson and
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Pete Carroll. The more I hear these names, none of
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: them actually end up getting me really excited. I just
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: think at this point I truly believe it, especially since
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: I know Jerry also adopts this philosophy. If he can't
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: be good, just be interesting, man, just hired Dion, Just
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: do it, Just do it. At this point, I don't
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: I can't necessarily see a path to success, a guaranteed
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: path to success with the of these guys. Now, I
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: will say Jerry does not make big splashes when he
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: makes hires. That's not really how Jerry operates, right Jerry
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: the Bill Parce sales one that was, you know, big splash, But.
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: Usually Jerry has stayed away.
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: From the big splashes in the hires that he's made recently.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: And that's why I wonder if you know, all of
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: this is just so you know, we can get hype
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: and they can get the headlines and the free media,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: and ultimately, if Jerry's just gonna you know, take a
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: safe choice like a Kelled Moore or or Jason Witten won.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: I mean Jason went hadn't coached you know, football at
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: the college on the pro level. I don't think so
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: that would be that would be that would be outside
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: the box. But if you do outside the box, just
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: do d On, then you would guarantee you would be
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: the most and you're already the most talked about team
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: in the most talked about league on the planets. All right,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: so you're the number one TV start a number one
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: TV show man with Dan at least.
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: I that would be hope because it might work.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: It might work. The d On the dun, I would say,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: the Dune situation, it's got a good chance to work.
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: It.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: It's got a good chance as working as probably half
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: of these candidates they're gonna hire that Jerry Jones thinking
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: about hiring At this point, I just want to be entertained.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: It's just I'm a quasi fan. I'm more of a
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Texans fan than a Cowboys fan. But man, I just
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: can't if Dion is still in serious consideration now and
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: some people are saying like he's the one that candidates
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: you're gonna hire Jason Witten, you might as well just
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: hire dun If you hire Jason Wiitden hired Dan if
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: you're gonna hire Jason Widden, like I said, hired Dn.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: The Kellen Moore thing, I get it, I get I
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: totally understand. I don't know if Kellen Moore has proven
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: that he will be a great head coach, but he
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: understands that organization, He understands Jerry, he understands Dak. Kellen
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: Moore is probably the safest choice. But yeah, the most
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: entertaining choice, spide Dion and I'm I'm here for it.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: I love me some Don. I think Don's really entertaining.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: I've always been a fan of d On. I warred
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: number twenty one at Texas because of Dion. And I'd
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: love to see Dan with the Cowboys again. That would
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: be and him and Jerry press conferences together. Oh man,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: they'd be must watch television. Uh and my apologies Cowboys fans.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: All right, we come back. We'll get into some of
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: the long horn football discussion, talking about the departures, talking
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: about Quinn yours declining eight million dollars in nil money.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Uh to uh go to the c for the NFL draft.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: We'll talk about that a little bit.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: We'll also get into previewing some of the upcoming playoff
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: games coming up this weekend all day more right here
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: on the Craig Way Show, right here on a thirteen
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: hundred zone. All right, welcome back to the Craigway Show
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: here on a thirteen hundred the zone.
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: I'm lifetime on Hunt Rode. They were sitting here for Craigway.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: I appreciate Craig Way giving me the chance to come
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: on here and talk some sports with you. I'm actually
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: gonna dive into the NFL playoffs a little bit. I'm
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: gonna be with you tomorrow too, so I'll get into
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: some detailed previews and breakdowns in the matchups in the
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: divisional round Tomorrow.
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: We'll get into a lot more detail in it.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: But one of the things that I think is a
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: kind of a theme in these playoffs, at least in
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: this division round.
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: There's no doubt about it in my opinion.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I brought this up two days ago when I joined
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: you guys on Tuesday. This is and I've been keeping
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: up with.
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: This that for a while.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: This is the most I think true dual threat quarterbacks
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: that we've seen or maybe the best group of dual
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: threat quarterbacks that we've seen this late in the NFL
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: playoffs in some time. And I know this is but
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: I'm sure debatable depending on you know what year you're
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: looking at it. But I said, it's definitely one of
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: the best years for dual threat quarterbacks. I've been tracking
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: this for a while so and I brought this up
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: early this week. Fifteen players in the history of the
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: NFL that have led their team in passing in rushing.
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: I mean, so these guys are they are the rushing
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: attack and the passing attack. That's hard to do in
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: the NFL. Min It's really tough to do, especially for
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: a good team, right for good teams, and you're starting
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: to see more and more of these types of weapons
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: at the quarterback position. And the latest to do is
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: Jane Daniels. Jane Daniels did it this past year. He
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: was the latest quarterback to do it. And except doing
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: it for a really good team, and that's rare too.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: You would think that's a bad team if you're having
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: to lead the team in rushing and in passing. This
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: is the first year that Lamar Jackson hasn't led the
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Ravens in passing and rushing in five years. I think
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: he led him in nineteen, in twenty nineteen, twenty twenty one,
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: twenty two and twenty three, he was their lead masler
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: and their lead rusher.
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: So you're just talking about, you know, unique freaks.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: At the quarterback renaissance with some of your best athletes
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: are now playing in the quarterback position. So are these
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: fifteen athletes in NFL history that have led their team
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: in passing and rushing. Four of the fifteen who have
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: done it at some point in their careers will be
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: a part of the final eight of the Division round.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: Josh Allen did it in twenty eighteen. He's gonna be
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: a part of the division round. Lamar Jackson. Of course,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: we talked about nobody's more than lower direction. Randall Cunningham
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: is the next closest. He did it eighty seven, eighty eight,
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: eighty nine, and ninety four times. Lawa Jackson did it
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: five so Lamar Jackson. He didn't do it this year though,
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: because he's got Derrick Henry. But yeah, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson,
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Jamie Hurst did it in twenty twenty one, and Jade Daniels.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: Those are your four. And I'm telling you, even though
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: you know you don't see it a lot. And I've
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: just kind of my started the preview for Tech, the
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: Texans face and the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes in college was
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: by definition of dual threat quarterback, and he got to
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: the NFL and has now been masquerading as a pocket
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: passing quarterback. But if you watch Patrick Mahomes enough and
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: I have, and you guys will notice in the playoffs
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: he somehow and I think in critical moments too, So
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: I will say in third downs and big games, he
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: channels that dual threat quarterback ability. He really does, and
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: he's really good at it. And I think one of
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: the things in these playoffs that you have these really
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: dynamic scramblers and runners at the quarterback position. Like I said,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: I include bat Mahomes in there too. I think just
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: watch scrambling period in this division round. Just the play,
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: just the concept of a quarterback scrambling out of the pocket,
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: and how impactful it's going to be on third downs
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: in the red zone. Just period in these division rounds.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: Go back to go watch how many critical plays happen
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: because the quarterback can extend the play and then even
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: scramble in a whether he's talking about improvising, operating outside
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: of the structure, off schedule, because I was doing some
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: research about because I think for the Texans scramble and
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: keeping Patrick mahone homes is scramble rate and him as
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: a scrambler, keeping him contained is gonna be big for
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: them unfortunately. And I'll throw this stat out there before
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: we start diving into the Texans matchup. In my Texas research,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: I found this little nugget. I'm not happy about it.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: Texans allow more rushing yards per carry on quarterback runs
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: and scrambles than any other team in the league seven
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: point eight yards per quarterback run or quarterback scramble. Not
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: a good sign when you're going up as Patrick Mahomes.
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: Trust me who will break it out on patri Mahomes
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three. Just a little nugget before I
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: get into my take about scrambling. He was second to
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson in scramble yards last season, not this passingason
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: last season. I haven't got the numbers from this season,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: but just to let you know how much he scrambles.
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: He not a dual third quarterback. But like I said,
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: I think he is a dual ThReD quarterback.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: I'm masquerading and cross dressing as a pocket passing quarterback,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: butmbing period. The scramble play about quarterback. Did you know
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: it's the most efficient play in football. Yeah, it's the
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: most if you go just look at it overall, it's
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: the most efficient play in football. Its average is around
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: eight a little over eight yards per play. Yeah, and
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: I mean, if you're gonna look at that's, you know,
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: that's more than your average rush attempt or your average
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: pass attempts. You know, that's to me, that's and it's
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: one of those things that's when the play breaks down too.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: So as a defender, you can do everything right. You
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: do everything right, you can have a great play call,
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: great defense, and then these quarterbacks who have that ability
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: to scramble. Once the initial play breaks down, then you
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: gotta cover and defend the second play, which is the
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: scrambled drill. And that can be hell on wheels because
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: that's you defending wide receivers who are freestyling and improvising
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: routes downfield and you're covering four five six seconds. Imagine
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: covering guys like xavier' worthy for five six seconds who
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: have world class speed, and then your front seven guys
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: on the defensive lineman having to chase down guys like
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen in the
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: open field. That's that exercise. And then if you do,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: if you defend the scrambled drill correctly, let's say you
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: by some miracle, you defend the initial play, then the
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: scrambled drill, well, oh, then you gotta worry about Lamari
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: Jackson just tucking the football and deciding I'm just gonna
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: use my four to three speed, I'm just gonna run it,
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: and I'm more and the more dynamic runners in the league.
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: You gotta defend three plays in the one with a
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: lot of these guys.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: That's that hurts. Remember texts when they played Arizona State
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: and Sam Levitt, who really didn't do much from the pocket,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: but he kept hurting Texas by the by extending the play.
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: They played ninety I think they defended ninety something plays
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: in that game, but it was how many plays they
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: he extended. They have to defend for five six seconds,
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: so the scramble. That's why they average almost eight and
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: a half yards per play on scrambles three percent of
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: offensive plays or scrambles by the quarterback. It was one
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: point seven percent in two thousand and seven. Random nugget
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: about two thousand and seven, Vince Young led the NFL
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: in designed runs for quarterbacks. He had twenty of them
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: in two thousand and seven. But if you're averaging eight
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: point five yards per scramble and Lamar Jackson right now,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: I mean you're averaging he's averaging eight point eight yards
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: per attempt. That led the NFL per passe attempt eight
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: and a half yards, eight point eight yards per pass attempts,
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: eight and a half yards per scramble. The scrambling might
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: be the most effective weapon in football today. The quarterbacks
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: scrambled just because of how it stresses the defense.
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: I just brought that up.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: Quarterback scrambles for last year to twenty twenty three generated
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: point three to one epa per play. The average run
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: play was point seven e pier per play, the average
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: pass play point one to three ep of per play.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: It's blown it out of the water in terms of effectiveness,
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: efficiency overall per play, and your average pass play generated
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: in twenty twenty three seven yards per pass. You're averaging
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: more than that per scramble and overall on scrambles. Your
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: first down rate on scrambles last year thirty damn near
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: thirty nine percent first down rate. I means you got
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: you got a first down thirty nine percent of the time,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: thirty eight point seven to be exact, of the time
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: a quarterback scrambled seventy four hundred yards three hundred ninety
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: eight first downs on scrambles. You had thirty six hundred
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: yards on scrambles total in two thousand and seven, and
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: now you had seventy four hundred and twenty twenty three.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: I haven't even got the twenty twenty four numbers. I
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: have to get those to you tomorrow. And like I said,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: my homes was second in scramble yards behind Lamar Jackson.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: Josh Allen was third. All those guys are still in
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: the playoffs. Those are your most scrambled happy quarterbacks. I
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: went and looked at the top scramble rates for quarterbacks.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: All right, these are the quarterbacks that scramble the most
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: in the NFL. Josh Allen eighteen point two, Jalen Hurt
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: seventeen point nine, Laarn Jackson seventeen percent, Bryce Young seventeen
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: point two percent, Lord Jackson seventeen point three. Mahomes is
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: fifteen point seven percent, same with Drake may Bo Nicks
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: is at fourteen percent scramble rate. C J. Strouds at
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: fourteen percent, and y'all say he don't even run Just
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: Trouds at fourteen percent, KENI Williams at twelve point nine percent,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: Kyler Murrays at twelve percent, Jane Daniel's at twelve percent,
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: twelve point one percent.
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: So out of those top ten, six of the top ten.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: Most scramble happy quarterbacks in the league, the quarterbacks with
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: the highest scramble rates in the league, six of the
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: top ten are still playing the scramble. Watch how many
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: times a scramble determines a drive or determines the outcome
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: of a series or maybe even a game during these playoffs.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: Because Jane Daniels, that guy scrambled. His scrambled rates when
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: he was in college twenty seven percent of his scrambles
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: results in explosive play. When he played a power five
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: team in the LSU, and his scrambles are great, he
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: had seventy and twenty twenty two.
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: He had sixty seven and twenty nineteen.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: He was among those scrambled happy quarterbacks in all of
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: college football when he played, and he's really effective at
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: it too, So that will be a big theme in
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: this division around. I guarantee you how many those quarterbacks
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: can make something out of nothing, extend to play and
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: you know, force quarterforced teams to have to defend the
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: scramble drill and them as runners. All right, we come back.
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: We'll dive deeper into the NFL playoffs. We'll talk about
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: Quinn as well. Quinn turning down declining an eight million
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: dollars nil offer to declare for the NFL draft. Was
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: it a smart business decision by a Quinn? Tell you
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: why it might have been. All of that and more
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: right here on the Craigway Show on here on Anthie Own.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to the Craigway Show here on
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: AM thirteen, so own on my tom on one rod.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: They were sitting in for Craig Way, who is on
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: the road. Of course, he is a busy man. He'll
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: be back with you next week. But I'm happy I
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: get to see that and talk some football with you.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: Getting back to Texas football, specifically a big story on
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: the forty acres of course transfer portal window closes officially,
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: and the window for players to the clayer for the
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: NFL Draft has also closed.
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: And we do know, at least we have.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: Some clarity about how that twenty twenty five roster for
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: Texas is going to look. A lot of guys that
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: were at least reportedly rumored to be on the fence.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: They did not, at least we didn't hear they had
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: to put their name into transfer a portal. So that
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: is good news. Guys like Trey Moore coming back for Texas,
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: Guys like DJ Campbell coming back for Texas as well,
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: Malik Muhammad coming back for Texas. Both our receivers Ryan Wingo,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: DeAndre Moore. So that's really good news. But we knew
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: that quinn Ewers was declaring for the NFL Draft. It
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: was reported before the bowl game, sorry before the Ohio
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: State game, i should say, and also was confirmed yesterday
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: when he put out a farewell video to all the
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: Longhorn fans and Longhorn Nation. Today, my man Chip Brown,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: who does a great job over there at Haunts twenty
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: four to seven, he is reporting that quinn Ewers turned
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: down an eight million dollar nil offer to transfer and
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: declare for the NFL Draft. Now, like I said, I
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: don't we don't know how many of these you know,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: how many these numbers and how accurate and substantive and
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: truthful these numbers are a lot of this stuff is
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: just speculation. Chip Brown does a great job, so I'm
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: sure Chip brown stuff is accurate. But there's another report
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: that Carson Back was offered like ten million dollars or
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: something like that. That's a rumor going out there, offered
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: like ten million for him to transfer from Georgia to
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: Miami and what would have been a very similar situation.
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: So either way, this would have been, you know, close
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: to reconsenting or a record stating amount for a quarterback
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: to be lured into the transfer a portal and wooed
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: into starting for another college football program. That's what happened
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: to Carsson Back. His woman, his girlfriend, she plays basketball
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: for Miami. So he had a lot a lot of
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: other incentives, all right, and he probably some other things
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: he was considering. But all those who are close to
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: Quinn that I have talked to, who had connections with
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: Quinn and with Quinn's people, his agent, his representative, they
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: all said, from the jump, he's declaring for the NFL draft.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: Bobby Burton does a great job at all at Texas Football.
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: He's been saying for months, ever since these rumors have
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: been out there that oh, no, Quinn's going to go
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: to the NFL. He's not gonna play football for another university,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: another program. Now, I mean, I know he wasn't gonna
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: play front of the program, But did they know it
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: was gonna be an eight million dollars offer? That's a
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: big butt. That's a Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj Soriena Williams's
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: Cardi b size making the Sallion size butt. They're eight
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: million dollars, And some people are saying, well, that's a
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: bad business decision by Quinn if he's gonna pass up
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: eight million dollars for a one year, you know, one
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: year nil deal with whoever was offering it.
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: And may that may very well be true, because if
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: you look.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: At where he's projected to be drafted, which is not
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: in the first round right now, that could change, maybe
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: it would work out something like that, but right now
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: he projects to be second tier quarterbacks, so second maybe
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: third round. Some of the first picks in the second
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: round of the draft can make can expect to make
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: nearly ten million throughout their four year rookie contracts, so
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: you know maybe from ten to twelve minute. It goes
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: up every year. And this is from spot track from
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: last Sea last year, so it goes up every year.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: So maybe from ten to twelve million that's what he
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: made over the four year life of a contract.
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: In the NFL where he's projected.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: To be drafted, he'd have made eight million dollars reportedly
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: in just one year. So if you want to make
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: the claim that it's a bad Bits decision, you can.
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: I would counter with Quinn, who's, by the way, one
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: of the nil ogs, right. He was the first got
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: to leave high school early to go, you know, capitalize
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: on the NIO deal with Ohio State, and then got
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: you know, another big bag.
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: I'm sure of nil earnings when he.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: Got to Texas and he's been a starting the quarterback
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: at Texas for three years, and we know that prestigious
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: present position earns you a lot of nil revenue, private
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: jet deals, Dr Pepper deal, He's got deals with everybody,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: tons of deals, so I'm sure he's earned and then
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: able to five to six million at least in you
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: know these four years right since he left high school
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: to go to Higo State and then transfer to Texas.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: So maybe money's not the be all end off. Eight
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: million dollars is a whole lot of more, so I'm
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: not saying it's not. But Quinn's people, obviously they do
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: a good job of kind of looking at the long
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: term strategy for Quinn and they believe him going to
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: the NFL. Yes, he'll make like I said, between ten
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: to twelve million as opposed to eight million to one season,
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: and who knows, I mean, his career maybe over.
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: After that first contract.
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: I think they're betting that he is gonna get to
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: a second contract in the league, whether it be because
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: he's a franchise quarterback, because he's a career backup, whatever
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: it may be, and he'll earn good money there as well.
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: But ultimately I got to give Quinn some props.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: I think it matters to Quinn that he be remembered
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: as a long corn and think it matters.
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: We know he wanted to come to Texas. He said
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: he always wanted to come to Texas.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: It was his dream school, and ultimately he committed to
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: a holl State because he didn't agree with the coaching
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: staff there at the time.
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: That changed.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: He committed, transferred to Texas and has been committed to
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: Uiversity of Texas. And I think it matters that he
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: is remembered in his legacy as a longhod and not
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: a mercenary. If he went to a house state, then
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: went to Texas and then went somewhere else but another year,
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: he wouldn't truly be remembered by everyone as a long one.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: Nobody's gonna remember him as a Buckeye in this day
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: and age of transfer a portal, you know, sometimes you know,
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: guys get remember where they had the most success. Quinn
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: will be remembered as a Longhoan. That's his legacy. And
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: I don't think he wanted to go somewhere and be
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: considered a mercenary and all. Like I said, I think
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: this decision has been made for a while. But even
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: Quinn and is people probably didn't expect somebody to throw
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: out an eight million dollars a year number.
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: You got to consider that, you just have to. And
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: I think he considered it and in the end thought.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know what the long term value of
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: being a lifetime Longhorn and considered that you'll make that backup.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: Once you're done playing, you're gonna live in Texas, You'll
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: have business businesses in Texas. You'll you know, you'll want
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: to come back around to university and have some affiliation
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: in that regard.
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: You'll make that money back up. Guy, he'll make that
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: eight million back.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: I promise you.
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: That's the brand of when I came up with Lifetime Longhorn.
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: That was part of it.
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: Brand yourself for life with that brand, and then the
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: value of that brand. And I think he understands the
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: value of being a lifetime Longhorn. Now, is that the
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: be all end Dolge's decision. No, I think there was
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: a ton of things he considered, right, a myriad of
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: different things he considered. That was definitely one of them.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: And he will be a Longhorn.
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: They considered that, and so I think for yeah, fourth
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: and thirteen, we all remember it.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: He's got Like I said, the Bama game is one
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: of the greatest wins for any quarterback in Texas. Quinn's
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: got a pretty good legacy. It'll look better in retrospect
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: as the years pass. Right now, our Longhorn fans can
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: see is that he underachieved based on the expectations. Truth is,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: when guy's come in with the expectations like that, your Chris, Sim's,
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: your Quinn, yours, hell, even you you can go way wait, wait,
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: way back right, And anytime my quarterback comes in with
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: you know, really really high expectations, it is really hard
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: to meet those expectations. Even if you like Quinn, you know,
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: achieved a lot. I thought he came pretty close. I
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: mean he got to the final four twice and was
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: on the goal line instead first and goal. And we
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: heard from Jim Knowles earlier this week. He said on
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: the second down when they tossed it, he knew they
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: were vulnerable to the toss because they had their big,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: heavy defense in there to defend Texas on the goal line.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: And that's why Start called a toss and they snuffed
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: it out. But on the second on the third and
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: fourth play, third and fourth down, he called a red
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: zone defense that he had not called all season long.
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: He broke tendency, He broke tennantsy at the right time,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: and that's why Quinn looked perplexed and stupefied and discombobulated.
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: He had never seen that. They didn't prepare for that.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: Now my man, my man. Kyle Shaned always has a saying.
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: He said, be coachable, don't be a robot. Go make
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: me right even when the defense makes me wrong. Right
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: when they got a good call and they got a
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: better call than I do, and go out there and
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: nickel play and make me right. That didn't happen with Quinn.
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: But you know, Texas didn't break enough tendency in that
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: game offensively. I watched a lot of Texas football and
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: I talk about it with you guys a lot, and
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: I always say, to win a big game, you gotta
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: break tendency, especially once I want to playoff. That's gonna
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: happen in these playoff games. To win big games, you
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: gotta break tendency. Happen with the Rams. When the Rams
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: played the Vikings, they are like twenty seventh and man
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: coverage rate, and I want to say in that game,
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: they double the amount of man coverage their man coverage
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: rate during the season, right, because you got to break tendency.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: There's so much preparation put into these big games. You
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: got to find a way to break tendency at the
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: right times. That's exactly what they did. Texas did it too.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: When the way they took away jeremih Smith. Texas hadn't
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: bracketed and rolled coverage that aggressively alas long, but they
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: broke tendency at the right time. One of my criticisms
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: was started in that game after watching it three different times.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: He didn't break tendency enough. There wasn't enough tendency breakers
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: to surprise Ohio State and get you some of those
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: play is a big exposive place more tendency break because
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: I think with El Texas that's another step. We'll talk
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: about that too. Steps Texas needs to take to win
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: a championship. They're really close final four two years in
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: a row. What other steps they need to take. We'll
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: discuss it on the other side. All that and more
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: right here on the crag Ways Show. Right here on
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: A thirteen, I welcome back to the Craigway Show on
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: Lifetime Long Horn Rock. They were sitting in for one
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: craig Way for today's show and tomorrow's show as well.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: So we'll be talking a lot about the NFL playoffs,
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: the Division A round. We're breaking down the matchups tomorrow
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: I'll give you my predictions, but also getting too the
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: x's and o's of that matchup. But I want to
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: talk a little Texas football while well, I still got
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: it on the brain. I was just talking about Quinn Quinn.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: Moving on, there's a lot of excitement about how the
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: Texas team is gonna. Look, you're losing a lot. I mean,
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: this is gonna be a brand new offense basically, because
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: you're losing your starting quarterback, losing four of your five
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: starting offensive lineman, losing your starting tight end, losing two
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: of your store wide receivers, and losing one of your
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: biggest weapons, a fourteen touchdown guy in Jayden Blue. It's
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: it's yeah, it's been a while since sexist. I mean
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: you also a lot the year before that too, I
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: mean you did you also a lot. You didn't lose
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: your entire offense line and you had your quarterback coming back,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: but you lost a lot at the skill positions. Lost
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: start and running back, lost three wide receivers, ever, starting
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: lost and starting tight end. This year, man does feel
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: like there is a mass of kind of exit is
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: happening of talent off the forty acres.
- 1:35:32Speaker 3: And it's a good thing. These are first world problems.
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: This is a good problem to have because Sexas is
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: now has to worry about, you know, having double digit
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: players potentially draft. They had eleven last year. I think
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: they could have ten to eleven this year, which would
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: be the best two year run Texas has ever had
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: in the NFL draft. But how's the offense gonna look? Right?
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: How's the team gonna look?
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: That is the question. I think the defense, that's pretty
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: in my opinion, that's pretty. Yesy Michael Taff coming back.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: You have Derek Williams who was dealing with an injury.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: He's coming back. You also have you know, Johnny McDonald's
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: stepped up last year last season. I should say he
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: looks really good. You're gonna be deep at the safety position. Corner,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: you got Malik Muhammad. Didn't hear anything about him in
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: the portal, so you got Malak Mohammad coming back. I
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: think Kobe Black I'm surprised Gavin Holmes decided to leave.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: I think Gavin Holmes could have easily been, you know,
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: the star in the corner opposite Malik Muhammad. I think
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: he's a better coverage player right now than Kobe Black
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: is and was one of your better coverage specialists, but
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: decided to leave. So no telling really how you know
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: when he's gonna get drafted. And you know what Gavin
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: Holmes was advised on in terms of why he left.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: I'm not saying you can't play at the NT level.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: I was just surprised by that move. But anyway, still
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: got at the second level. You got Anthony Hill. You
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: also have leannge Lafou on the edges. We know Tray
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: Moore is all coming back when but traded Moore last
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: seven games had and have sacks in the last seven games.
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: He really started to find his groove and his rhythm
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: as a player towards the end of the season, especially
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: in that NASCAR package.
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: With three defensive ends on the field.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: So you'll have one of the better edge rooms with
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: Colin Simmis trade more Colden vasik Ethan Burgh in the country.
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: But I've been you know, I went back and rewatched
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: the the Ohio State game. I'm trying to see exactly
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: how close Texas was. Andy were really close, Like I said,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: Jim Knows admitted he had to break out a coverage
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: he hadn't played all season long in the red zone
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: to beat Texas. And that's what it takes, Like I said,
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: tendency breakers, and I think there are some things now.
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: So Texas has been so close in the last two
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: years Final four, in the last two years, you've been
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: knocking on the door.
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: You got to find somewhere to break the door down.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: And I think there are a couple of things that
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: are hindering Texas, a couple of recurring issues hindering Texas
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: from breaking that door down. If you go look at
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: I mean obviously red zone offense and goal line offense,
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: which are connected. Probably we just saw goal line offense
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: come back to hunt you in this game versus Ohio
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: State first and goal couldn't score.
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: Same thing happened in the Oklahoma loss.
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: You have five losses in the last two years, and
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: two of those you were on a goal line first
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: and goal on the one and couldn't came away with
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: zero points that and they were close games. It was
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: we are one score games. That was a big reason
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: why you lost the game. Two of another issue is
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: red zone and in two of those five losses, your
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: red zone offense inefficiency. Deficiency in the red zone has
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: cost you Washington game. Your red zone offense cost you
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: last year in the SEC title game, settling for field
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: goals instead of touchdowns to the red zone that cast
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: you as well. And and so that it seems to
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: be a theme that those are two recurring issues and
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: the red zone has been issued for sark. Let's be honest,
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: since Bjon and Rojo left. I think it's a Jon
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: Rojo hangover. That's how I that was my theory a
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: year ago. I didn't know it would last two years,
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: but you have been. You went from top five red
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: zone offense and touchdown percent in the red zone in
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: twenty one twenty twenty one, and in twenty twenty two
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: you were still top twenty and you were an average
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: red zone offense overall and touchdown percentage, and then the
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: last two years one hundred and twentieth and ninetieth and
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: then fifty fourth and one hundred and first in red
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: zone offense and touchdown percentage. And I think it has
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: something to do with your running backs in the red zone. Now,
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: you had a lot of injuries at the running back
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: this year, so that could be something that really hurt
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: your offensive identity and your identity in the running game.
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: And I think it is true.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: But it says Trey Wisner and Jane Blue were better
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: in executing zone blocking concepts, so you ran alloud to
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: wide zone. You were top ten in the country at
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: running the wide zone. And when team stopped your wide zone,
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: which was Georgia both times, Oile State and Arizona State,
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: those were three games you lost lowest four rush your
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: four sub one hundred rushing totals of the season. Three
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: of those were losses and one was almost a loss
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: in overtime. Versure's on to say if not for a
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: fourth and thirteen, and to me, that's that's not a
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: recurring issue from last season. Last season you ran the
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: ball pretty well. Even in your losses to Oklahoma and
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: to Washington, you were able to run the ball. But
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: this season you didn't have a contingency plan. You didn't
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: have a counter literally two teams when they were able
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: to stop your wide zone, your bread and butter run concept.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: That's something you got to work on, and that to me,
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: can be related to the goal line. Goal line is
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: just power gap schemes. You're just that's just power football,
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: downhill running, playing bullyball, and if you can't do that,
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: that also means that you don't run gaping power schemes
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: very well. In between the twenties, and that's why Texas
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: was considered more of a finest football team this year.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: And when it came to being a physical football team, Georgia,
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Ohio State on the goal line at times, even Arizona
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: State look the more physical than Texas. That would be
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: the next step too, When can you become a physical
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: football team that can impose their will in situations like
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: goal line, like when teams take away your zone run
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: scheme and you can go to gap power schemes. That's
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: three things. Goal line, red zone, and your run game
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: against against elite physical teams. And I think all those
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: things are probably related. All things are probably related. Those
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: are things that are that are recurring that are keeping you,
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: i think, ultimately from becoming a championship caliber football team.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: The third quarter woes, that wasn't all season long, and
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: that was something that happened towards the end of the season.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: And it didn't happen in all your losses. A right,
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: you got five losses in the last two years. Your
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: third quarter wasn't an issue versus Oklahoma last year it
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: was versus Washington, wasn't versus Georgia the first time around.
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: It was it wasn't very Ohio State. Maybe it was
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: versus Georgia.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: So maybe in two of your five losses, the third
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: quarter has come up, but not necessarily a recurring major issue,
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: not a tragic flaw. Turnovers though this season was this
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: year you were top you were bottom ten in the country,
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: and giveaways that you lost, You've lost a turn of
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: March in fourteen to seven in your five losses in
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: the last two years. That is something that you got
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: to figure out that could come back to haunt you.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: All Right, we come back, We'll get ready to wrap
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: it up and put it in the oven. We'll talk
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: a little bit to a preview, little teaser about the
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: NFL playoffs coming up, but tomorrow we'll break that down
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: in detail. We come back, we'll dive into some NFL
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: playoff discussion, all that more right here on the Craigway Show.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: Here on A thirteen hundred the Zone. All right, welcome
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: back to the Craigway Show. I'm lifetime, I'm long one
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: Rode Bay sitting in for the one and only Craig Way.
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: We'll be breaking down the divisional games tomorrow, like I said,
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: in great detail. We can start to teased him a
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: little bit and start to talk about the matchups just
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: a little bit, and some really interesting matchups. Of course,
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: none more interesting than the Texans taking on the Kansas
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: City Chiefs.
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: Well for me anyway, because I'm a Texans fan.
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: The issue for the Texans, They're gonna hope that this
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: Kansas City Chiefs team is dealing with some rust. They're
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: gonna pray that is the case because they've been off
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: twenty well they will be will have been off twenty
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: four days.
- 1:43:27Speaker 3: When they play the Texans.
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: That's a long time. I mean that's three weeks plus.
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: That's a long time. So the rust versus you know,
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: rest factor for them, I think it is gonna be
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: a lot about rest because they're.
- 1:43:38Speaker 3: An older team. Their stars are old. Kelsey's old, Chris
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: Jones is older.
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: Deandres Hopkins with that group, he's a little bit older
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: as well. They've had guys coming off injuries, like Hollywood
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: Brown coming off an injury, so I think, you know,
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: they've been relying on Xavier Worthy a lot. So the
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: rookie wall he probably could have used some rest.
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: I think ultimately it's gonna help them.
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: They had Jalen Watson, one of their starting corners go out,
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: he's gonna return after the sufficient rest they've had to
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: so I think ultimately is gonna help them. But I've
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: done some research I'll share it with you guys tomorrow
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: about the Russ factor is real, especially when you're talking
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: about the NFL playoffs and the CANCA Chiefs going for
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: three peat. You could have enough Russ to keep the
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: Texans in it early. But they do have the ability
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: to flip a switch right. They got seven walk off
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: wins so far this year, and they're used to winning
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: in clutch time. They've won sixteen straight games decided by
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: one score. That is an NFL record seven to zero
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: in game winning drive opportunities. They haven't blown a fourth
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: quarter lead. The Texans held attentions have blown four fourth
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: quarter leads this year. The CANCA Chiefs have not blown
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: a fourth quarter lead. But the Kim Kardashian Nikominasi Rhalum
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: Souse card be size.
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: Making the Sava House.
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: But is Kansas City When their favorite of seven or
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: more points this season oh and six, six and one
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: against the spread, six and one straight up, they win
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: those games, but they don't necessarily cover, so the Texans
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: may be able to say in it, because this this
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: specific Kansas City team is not built to blow teams out,
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: and the Texans shouldn't get blown out. Matter of fact,
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: the Texans they should match up pretty well against the Chiefs.
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: And we'll talk about that a little bit later on
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: the two things I'm worried about because the Texans secondary
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: is playing really well as any secondary right now in
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: the playoffs. They're playing at a really high level, taking
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: the football away. They got the best pass rushing edge
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: duo in the NFL with Danil Hunter and Will Anderson.
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: So that's match up. Well, they'll get a ziz Al
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: Shi year back, who's the leader of that defense at
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: the lineback position. He was not available in the first matchup.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: But that first matchup, that's what worries me. We're back
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: to look at that first matchup, the last meeting, first
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: matchup this season. We got a lot of rematches happening
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: in these playoffs from regular season matchup. The last meeting,
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: the Chiefs scored twenty seven points on nine drives and
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: Kareem Hutt pulled up on one drive that could have
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: scored a touchdown on because they were trying to milk
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: the clock and they they had twenty seven. The Texans
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: allowed twenty five first downs. That was the season high
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: for them. They matched that season high the next week
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: when they played Baltimore. YEP. So the first matchup does
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: not giving me a lot of confidence that the Texans
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: are gonna be able to keep this team close. And
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: even if they do keep it close, Patrick Mahomes, as
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: we'll talk about tomorrow at more detail, that's the most
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: clutch player in the league.
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: That's the most clutch player arguably of all time.
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: And the Chiefs have been real have been the most
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: clutched team in the NFL this season, So that's something.
- 1:46:46Speaker 3: So you gonna neaed J.
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: Stroud to put the cape on. He had two picks
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: in that last game. No Tank Dell in this matchup
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: because tankdlle is out. He's he had ninety eight yards
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: receiving in that last matchup. We know Stefan Diggs been
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: out for a while. So it'll be CJ. Stroud and Nico.
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: C J. Stroud, Nico and Joe Mixon. That group, that
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: trio they gotta have. They have extraordinary, out of this
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: world performances in order for them to upset the Kansas
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: City Chiefs. But we shall see. Another big thing is
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: I talked about Patrick Mahone's scrambling ability. The secret playing
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: Patrick mahomes like anybody's really figured it out. But he
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: he has his worst performances as a quarterback when he
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: holds onto the ball and stays in the pocket. Now,
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: the thing he is keeping him in the pocket because
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: he scrambles. When I'll tell you, he scrambles as well
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: as any quarterback in the league in twenty twenty three
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: at the second most scrambled yards behind Lamar Jackson. So
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: it's he's almost just as dangerous, if not more dangerous
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: in the scrambled drill exgaining to play outside the pocket
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: because he can make any throw in the football field,
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: and he can touch any plate of grass and from
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: any arm angle and also tuck the ball and try
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: to run. But if you can correl him in the pocket,
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: which the Texans have the defensive ends and the edges
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: to do, and you can cover for an extended period
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: of time, which the Texans secondary has been playing really
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: really well, you can cover for an extended period of
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: time which you're gonna have to, but keep him in
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: the pocket. His average time to throw has always been
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: a good indicator of how effective he is in terms
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: of being in rhythm as a passer, and that lost
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: to Buffalo, that only lost on the season. His average
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: time to throw three point three five seconds, kept him
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: in the pocket, didn't hurt him too much as a scrambler,
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: kept him in the pocket, surveying the field but holding
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: on to the ball. His average time to throw versus
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: Houston in that first matchup two and a half seconds.
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: He saw he's getting the ball out quick by. In fact,
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: that was his That was his fastest time to throw
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: up until that point of the season when he played
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: the Texans two and a half seconds. So they knew
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: the Texans can get after you. They got two really
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: good as rushers. Balls got to come out quick. And
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: against Pittsburgh that next week, they his average time to
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: throw increased it two point three seconds. It was two
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: point three four seconds an average time to throw. So
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: he understands and they understand the ball has to come
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: out if you're in the Texans and you got those
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: edge rushers that can contain him but also collapse the pocket,
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: and you got the dvs, which the Texans do with
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: Derek Stingley and that group of young young cropper dvs
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: to be able to cover for an extended period of
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: time him in the pocket holding on to the ball.
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: That's when usually all that has an adverse effect on
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: all of his numbers, his statistical numbers and analytical numbers
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: they drop. And can you do that? That's a tall task,
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: herculean task, if you will. But having him hold on
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: to the ball because he getting rid of the ball quickly,
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: and if he's extending the place scrambling outside the pocket,
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: that's trouble. And the Texans allow the most rushing yards
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: per carry on quarterback runs and scrambles almost eight yards.
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: You don't want him doing that on you either. All Right,
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: we'll talk about that a lot more tomorrow. Like I said,
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: we'll dive into it into great detail and preview all
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: the matchups from the divisional round. I'm sure that some
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: Longhoorn news, so of course we'll always talk Texas football.
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: You go behind the burnt orange curtain. So join me
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: tomorrow seven in for the great Craigway. Thank you to
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: Ronald for twisting and tweeting of the dolls behind the scenes,

- 1:50:20Speaker 1: Hook him in peace.
