- 0:00Speaker 1: Episode 2, Stepping into the Light Overcoming Denial and Toxic Shame.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello and welcome back to The Recovery Path. It is
- 0:10Speaker 1: fantastic to have you with me for Episode 2. Today,
- 0:15Speaker 1: we are addressing the two greatest psychological barriers that keep
- 0:19Speaker 1: people trapped in active addiction and prevent them from seeking help.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Denial and Toxic Shame When substance dependence takes root in
- 0:29Speaker 1: a person's life, it builds an elaborate psychological defense system
- 0:35Speaker 1: designed to protect the addiction from outside interference. The primary
- 0:40Speaker 1: mechanism of this defense system is denial. Denial is not
- 0:46Speaker 1: necessarily a conscious lie told to deceive others. Denial is
- 0:51Speaker 1: often an unconscious psychological coping mechanism. where the brain M, enemizes, rationalizes,
- 0:59Speaker 1: or distorts reality to avoid the painful truth of how
- 1:04Speaker 1: much damage the substance is causing. An individual in denial
- 1:09Speaker 1: might tell themselves, I can stop whenever I want, my
- 1:13Speaker 1: use is under control compared to others, or I only
- 1:17Speaker 1: use substances to relax after a hard day at work.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Hand in hand with denial operates toxic shame. Shame is
- 1:27Speaker 1: the agonizing belief that you are fundamentally broken, unworthy, and
- 1:32Speaker 1: damaged beyond repair. While guilt says I made a mistake,
- 1:37Speaker 1: shame says I am a mistake. In active addiction, shame
- 1:42Speaker 1: acts as a prison. When a person experiences intense shame
- 1:46Speaker 1: over their actions, broken relationships, or health struggles, their emotional
- 1:52Speaker 1: pain becomes unbearable. To escape that painful shame, they often
- 1:58Speaker 1: reach for the very substance that caused the pain in
- 2:01Speaker 1: the first place, creating a vicious, destructive cycle. To break
- 2:06Speaker 1: free from this prison, you must choose radical honesty and
- 2:10Speaker 1: separate your true self from your addiction. Let us master
- 2:15Speaker 1: three steps to dismantle denial and overcome shame. Step number one,
- 2:21Speaker 1: is practicing radical self-honesty. Sit down in a quiet space
- 2:26Speaker 1: with a notebook, free from judgment, and write down an
- 2:30Speaker 1: honest assessment of how S, substance use is impacting your
- 2:35Speaker 1: physical health, your emotional stability, your relationships, your career, and
- 2:41Speaker 1: your financial security. Acknowledging reality on paper shatters the illusions
- 2:47Speaker 1: of denial. Step number two, is separating your identity from
- 2:52Speaker 1: your substance use. Remind yourself daily, addiction is a medical
- 2:58Speaker 1: condition I am experiencing. Addiction is not who I am.
- 3:03Speaker 1: You possess inherent human dignity, worth, and the capacity for
- 3:08Speaker 1: complete healing. Step three is sharing your truth in a
- 3:12Speaker 1: safe space. Shame thrives in secrecy and isolation. The moment
- 3:18Speaker 1: you speak your struggles out loud to a trusted healthcare professional,
- 3:23Speaker 1: a licensed therapist, or a support group, the toxic power
- 3:27Speaker 1: of shame begins to dissolve. By dismantling denial through radical
- 3:32Speaker 1: honesty and stepping out of shame into safe connection, you
- 3:36Speaker 1: lay the indestructible foundation for true recovery. Thank you for
- 3:40Speaker 1: tuning in to Episode 2. Write down your honest assessment
- 3:45Speaker 1: in a journal today. In Episode 3, we will explore
- 3:49Speaker 1: navigating physical and emotional withdrawal. See you there.
