- 0:00Speaker 1: Thunder With Row presented by Hard Rock Bet. Accidents don't
- 0:05Speaker 1: wait for great timing here. That one bad moment, a wreck,
- 0:08Speaker 1: a fall, a doctor who wasn't paying attention. Suddenly you're
- 0:11Speaker 1: fighting an insurance company that does this every single day.
- 0:14Speaker 1: And that's why Clay started Clay Travis Law. He's a
- 0:16Speaker 1: Vanderbilt Law grad. He built a firm around one idea.
- 0:19Speaker 1: People deserve someone willing to pay attention. Ask the hard questions.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Push back when things don't add up.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Car and truck wrecks, rideshare accidents, medical malpractice, premises liability,
- 0:31Speaker 2: product liability. If you are wrong, they want to hear
- 0:33Speaker 2: about it. Here's what they promise.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Honesty.
- 0:35Speaker 2: They don't sugarcoat your case. You'll hear what it's actually worth,
- 0:38Speaker 2: not what you want to hear. The case evaluation is free,
- 0:41Speaker 2: no charge, no pressure, no hassle. Just tell them your story.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Go to claytravislaw.com or call them at 877-222-4444. That's claytravislaw.com.
- 0:51Speaker 2: No case is too big or too small.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Chad, week one matters. In the National Football League, playoffs,
- 0:59Speaker 1: just talking postseason, teams that win in week one have
- 1:03Speaker 1: a 59% chance of making the playoffs. That drops to 25%
- 1:08Speaker 1: for the teams that lose and start 0-1. Winning the division,
- 1:12Speaker 1: teams that win in week one have a 35% chance
- 1:15Speaker 1: of winning their division. It drops to 16% if you
- 1:19Speaker 1: lose the opener. And that goes on and on and on.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Of course, 1-0 matters versus 0-1. But there are some
- 1:28Speaker 1: huge matchups this year that will be scattered across, what,
- 1:32Speaker 1: four or five days. You've got, and I'm bringing five
- 1:36Speaker 1: to the table that I think will factor in come
- 1:39Speaker 1: end of December. Specifically, you've got San Francisco taking on
- 1:43Speaker 1: Los Angeles, 49ers Rams, Broncos and Chiefs, Packers Vikings, Bills
- 1:50Speaker 1: and Texans, and Ravens Colts. This is where I'm going
- 1:54Speaker 1: with the best matchups for week one. Let's start at
- 1:57Speaker 1: the very top here. This is the NFL's debut in Melbourne.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It's actually winter there, and it'll be in the 40s
- 2:07Speaker 1: whenever they play. Stafford, Puketukua, Devontae Adams, Miles Garrett, Aaron Donald. Defensively,
- 2:15Speaker 1: McDuffie and Watson are playing corner, and then you have
- 2:22Speaker 1: On the flip side, the 49ers, who have been banged
- 2:25Speaker 1: up but continue to win, they've had their fair share
- 2:28Speaker 1: of wins against the Rams as of late, but it's
- 2:31Speaker 1: the Rams who dominate week one. And then the travel factor.
- 2:35Speaker 1: The 49ers went ahead and took a party of like
- 2:38Speaker 1: 200 people over to Melbourne, like, what, 10 days in
- 2:43Speaker 1: advance or something like that. And meanwhile, the Rams, they're
- 2:48Speaker 1: going to just fly in and fly out. And they're
- 2:50Speaker 1: going to keep everything on Pacific time zone. This is
- 2:53Speaker 1: like a 15 or 16 hour flight. And I think
- 2:56Speaker 1: the travel factors in. I'm fascinated to see which coach
- 3:00Speaker 1: made the right call on the time zone flip. Because
- 3:04Speaker 1: that is a quick turn going from the West Coast
- 3:08Speaker 1: to Australia and coming straight back.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Hunt, it feels like a lot more pressure on the
- 3:14Speaker 2: 49ers having been there longer. in doing that. If you're
- 3:17Speaker 2: Sean McVay and you can successfully fly in and fly
- 3:21Speaker 2: out and treat it more like a regular game and
- 3:23Speaker 2: not completely get off your schedule, that's a huge win
- 3:26Speaker 2: for the Rams if they're able to go down there
- 3:28Speaker 2: and get that win.
- 3:29Speaker 1: How about this? So the Ocean Freight, back in April,
- 3:32Speaker 1: the NFL, they have a huge cargo ship and they
- 3:36Speaker 1: told both teams, hey, Ship over whatever you can. This
- 3:39Speaker 1: is April. Whatever you need for the game that you
- 3:42Speaker 1: can go ahead and ship, bring it to us. Because
- 3:44Speaker 1: they shipped over, like, goalposts and all these things. And
- 3:48Speaker 1: so it arrived in June. And they've had all this
- 3:52Speaker 1: equipment over there for a winter game since June. But
- 3:55Speaker 1: it took two months on this cargo ship. And you've
- 3:58Speaker 1: got the security laws there.
- 4:02Speaker 2: There were, like....
- 4:04Speaker 1: You've got whey and protein powders that weren't even allowed
- 4:06Speaker 1: in by the country that the 49ers sent over there.
- 4:10Speaker 1: It's been crazy how far in advance they've had to
- 4:13Speaker 1: play this one game all for week one as the
- 4:17Speaker 1: NFL goes international. It's a massive game, too, in that division.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I would not want to be the person in charge
- 4:22Speaker 2: of organizing the travel for these things because it is
- 4:25Speaker 2: like mobilizing an army for war. when you're talking about
- 4:28Speaker 2: all the rations you have to bring, everything that we
- 4:31Speaker 2: don't really think about as just a fan that they're
- 4:34Speaker 2: taking into this. I think they probably get a little
- 4:36Speaker 2: too serious about it too. Some travel departments act like
- 4:41Speaker 2: they're actually preparing for the invasion of Normandy when they
- 4:44Speaker 2: travel abroad for these things. You could probably pack a
- 4:47Speaker 2: little bit lighter in what you do and go the
- 4:50Speaker 2: Rams approach in how they're handling it like a normal
- 4:53Speaker 2: road game. But there's also a lot of things that
- 4:56Speaker 2: you have to have that you can't screw up, and
- 4:59Speaker 2: you've got to understand different countries' customs. You've got to
- 5:02Speaker 2: understand what's allowed, what's not. It's a huge undertaking for
- 5:06Speaker 2: these teams to make this happen. But here's what we know, Hutton,
- 5:10Speaker 2: and something you've said a lot, is that this isn't
- 5:13Speaker 2: going away. No. The international element of the NFL is
- 5:16Speaker 2: here to stay, and it's only going to become more
- 5:18Speaker 2: and more. Roger Goodell himself has said there's eventually going
- 5:21Speaker 2: to be a team overseas. Yep.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And shipping all this stuff back, the teams are combining
- 5:26Speaker 1: everything into a huge plane. They're using the same stuff.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Broncos and Chiefs. Here we go. Broncos, winners of the division.
- 5:36Speaker 1: They head into Arrowhead. You've got Bo Nix and Patrick
- 5:39Speaker 1: Mahomes coming off of injury. You have Kelsey back for
- 5:42Speaker 1: another year. Jalen Waddell is now in Denver. Broncos defense
- 5:47Speaker 1: is elite. Kenneth Walker III is now in the backfield
- 5:50Speaker 1: for Kansas City. The Chiefs have nine division titles over
- 5:54Speaker 1: the last decade. But it's Denver... that was a game
- 5:59Speaker 1: away and maybe without the injury, they're playing in the
- 6:03Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Is Denver for real or is Kansas City
- 6:08Speaker 1: being overlooked a little too soon given the fact that
- 6:12Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes is still the quarterback for the Chiefs? This
- 6:16Speaker 1: is one of those games we'll look back on in
- 6:18Speaker 1: December and think that this 17-13 game or a 24-21 game,
- 6:21Speaker 1: that factored in a lot more than we thought.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Denver's definitely being overlooked. That's the way I look at it.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I hope they are, too, because my hard rock bet
- 6:32Speaker 2: futures has Denver winning that division. So, yeah, I think
- 6:35Speaker 2: Denver's being overlooked going into this game and going into
- 6:38Speaker 2: the season. They're underappreciated. They got the third best odds.
- 6:44Speaker 2: They're picked to finish third in that division based on
- 6:46Speaker 2: hard rock bet odds. I think this is a huge one,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and I'm glad you're talking about it because not just
- 6:55Speaker 2: from Denver's standpoint, but are the chiefs back? You know, what,
- 6:59Speaker 2: what are the chiefs? Also Travis Kelsey still playing. Um,
- 7:04Speaker 2: I I'm, I'm surprised, right? Like I, I just, that
- 7:08Speaker 2: still pops in every now and again. I'm like, Oh,
- 7:10Speaker 2: he didn't retire. He's still on the roster. Like I
- 7:13Speaker 2: just assumed he was married to Taylor Swift and no
- 7:16Speaker 2: longer playing in the NFL, but.
- 7:18Speaker 3: He's, Hey, still got to get away.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I guess one more, we'll give it one more go. I, uh,
- 7:23Speaker 1: the Packers and Vikings, um, For the Vikings, it's hard
- 7:28Speaker 1: to know how they're going to look on the field.
- 7:30Speaker 1: New starting quarterback. They've changed over some things. A lot
- 7:33Speaker 1: of new phases on the roster. But a solid performance
- 7:37Speaker 1: against their division rival will go a long way here.
- 7:39Speaker 1: And it's Green Bay who's not looking like themselves, at
- 7:43Speaker 1: least on the depth chart. Josh Jacobs isn't going to
- 7:45Speaker 1: be playing here. He's on the commissioner's exempt list. They
- 7:48Speaker 1: have Micah Parson who's starting the season on IR. They
- 7:53Speaker 1: have a banged up offensive line. So there are things
- 7:56Speaker 1: that Minnesota can take advantage of with Brian Flores in
- 7:59Speaker 1: a very aggressive defense. But it was Green Bay that
- 8:03Speaker 1: figures things out in a crunch time. And Kyler Murray
- 8:07Speaker 1: is trying to be the next Sam Darnold with a
- 8:10Speaker 1: coach that turned Darnold around on a one-year contract. So
- 8:14Speaker 1: buckle up. I think this is going to be a
- 8:15Speaker 1: great matchup.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally agree. It's crazy because... I'm looking at
- 8:23Speaker 2: the whole week one slate, Hutton, and week one is
- 8:29Speaker 2: week one, and then it's everything else. We know that.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Things change a lot. But we got so many games,
- 8:35Speaker 2: and these five are great examples of them. I feel
- 8:38Speaker 2: like we're actually going to know something about the two
- 8:40Speaker 2: teams after one game. It's not just going to be, okay,
- 8:42Speaker 2: just throw that away. That was week one. It's really nothing.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I feel like we're going to learn a lot.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Buffalo and Houston.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Houston.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Don't overlook the Texans. Both teams went 12-5 a season ago.
- 8:54Speaker 1: And they won a playoff game before they were bounced
- 8:57Speaker 1: in the divisional round. So on paper, they're opposites of
- 9:01Speaker 1: one another.
- 9:03Speaker 2: C.J.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Stroud's trying to find that rookie season magic again. They
- 9:07Speaker 1: had offensive line overhaul. Great defense in Houston. Solid coach.
- 9:11Speaker 1: A legitimate AFC contender. But so is Buffalo. They're expected
- 9:15Speaker 1: to be that. Houston's pass rush gets after it. This
- 9:20Speaker 1: is a litmus test for a Bills offensive line that's
- 9:22Speaker 1: been overhauled to protect the quarterback after Allen was sacked
- 9:25Speaker 1: like eight or nine times by Houston a year ago.
- 9:27Speaker 1: So Joe Brady debuts as the head coach here. This
- 9:33Speaker 1: is a lot like number five on my list with
- 9:35Speaker 1: the Ravens and the Colts. This may be like a
- 9:37Speaker 1: tiebreaker scenario for the AFC for either just making the
- 9:41Speaker 1: playoffs or a higher seed, better matchup, better path to
- 9:46Speaker 1: the AFC championship game. The time is now for Houston
- 9:48Speaker 1: and the time is now for C.J. Stroud. It's not
- 9:52Speaker 1: a must-win game here, but we get to see how
- 9:55Speaker 1: teams level up and how these coaches level up.
- 9:57Speaker 2: It feels like D'Amico Ryans has got something for Josh
- 10:00Speaker 2: Allen and Joe Brady in that offense. I feel like
- 10:05Speaker 2: that's another team that the Chiefs a year ago had
- 10:09Speaker 2: the down year. I feel like the Texans are prime
- 10:13Speaker 2: for a big year in the AFC South, and I
- 10:15Speaker 2: just have this sense that it's going to be tough
- 10:18Speaker 2: sledding for Josh Allen. in week one with a really
- 10:20Speaker 2: good Texans defense and a really good defensive mind as
- 10:23Speaker 2: head coach in Ryan's, that's one I'm going to be
- 10:26Speaker 2: keeping an eye on.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Chad, my fifth game, not Titans-Jets, unfortunately. No, no. It's
- 10:33Speaker 1: Baltimore and Indianapolis. Big test. Two AFC teams right out
- 10:37Speaker 1: of the gate here. I mentioned the tiebreaker scenario thing.
- 10:41Speaker 1: You've got the Ravens. They still have the AFC title expectations. Again,
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm still liking what they have. The Colts, 7-1 to
- 10:50Speaker 1: start last year. I keep thinking about the way they
- 10:54Speaker 1: finished with the injuries instead of the way they started.
- 10:57Speaker 1: They were boat racing opponents. Lamar Jackson against Daniel Jones here.
- 11:01Speaker 1: You've got Derrick Henry against Jonathan Taylor. The coaching storylines.
- 11:06Speaker 1: For the first time since 2008, Baltimore has a new
- 11:09Speaker 1: head coach in Jesse Minter who comes to Baltimore from
- 11:11Speaker 1: the Chargers where he served as the DC. You've got
- 11:16Speaker 1: an offensive coordinator in Declan Doyle who was in Chicago
- 11:21Speaker 1: last year, who's only like nine months older than his
- 11:25Speaker 1: quarterback in Lamar Jackson. This is a big switch for Baltimore.
- 11:29Speaker 1: We'll see if it works. And this is a big
- 11:31Speaker 1: test for Indianapolis. They're hosting the game, but it's Baltimore
- 11:34Speaker 1: who is favored in this. I would be locked in
- 11:37Speaker 1: on that one.
- 11:39Speaker 2: And we forget that last year, that great start you mentioned,
- 11:43Speaker 2: but Phillip Rivers was the quarterback last year. of the
- 11:46Speaker 2: Indianapolis Colts for a stretch of last year, too. So that, too, happened.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Do you want to talk about two vastly different seasons
- 11:53Speaker 2: for the Colts? They were 7-1 at one point, and
- 11:56Speaker 2: then Phillip Rivers was quarterbacking, and they became a national
- 12:00Speaker 2: story because of that.
- 12:01Speaker 1: The storyline of Week 1 divisional matchups. San Francisco... and
- 12:06Speaker 1: Los Angeles lead the way for me whenever they play
- 12:09Speaker 1: on Thursday in Melbourne, followed by the AFC West, Denver,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and Kansas City. We head to the NFC for Green Bay, Minnesota.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Buffalo and Houston's going to be a great game, and
- 12:20Speaker 1: so will Baltimore and Indianapolis whenever they meet in Week
- 12:24Speaker 1: 1 for the matchups across the NFL. Chad, we've got
- 12:29Speaker 1: uniforms to talk about. We have gold retrievers to discuss.
- 12:36Speaker 1: and a bit more across college football. We'll get back
- 12:38Speaker 1: to on-the-field action as well. And John Talti is going
- 12:42Speaker 1: to be our guest. We're discussing all things Lane Kiffin
- 12:45Speaker 1: coming up at 9.30 Eastern, right here on Sporting States,
- 12:50Speaker 1: Hutton and Withrow, presented by Hard Rock Bet. Happy Labor
- 12:53Speaker 1: Day and good morning. Hope you got the coffee ready
- 12:56Speaker 1: because we've got Crockett coffee for you. Crockett coffee started
- 13:00Speaker 1: by Clay Travis, Buck Sexton, and Buck's brother Mason, named
- 13:04Speaker 1: after Davy Crockett. Hunter, storyteller, patriot, backwoods legend, and if
- 13:09Speaker 1: you look at the logo, it tells you everything about
- 13:11Speaker 1: the attitude here. 100% pure Arabica, high-altitude beans, small batch
- 13:15Speaker 1: roasted right here in America, Tennessee, the heart of the country.
- 13:18Speaker 1: It ships fresh roasted. It's not sitting on a warehouse
- 13:21Speaker 1: shelf for six months or on a cargo ship like
- 13:24Speaker 1: the 49ers gear. Light, medium, dark, decaf, organic, even a
- 13:28Speaker 1: mushroom blend, whole bean, ground, or K-cups, however you make
- 13:32Speaker 1: it in the morning, Chad.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's set up a subscription, shows up on your schedule.
- 13:36Speaker 2: It's all about you with Crockett Coffee. They're going to
- 13:38Speaker 2: make it about you, not about them. Change it or
- 13:41Speaker 2: cancel it anytime you want as the free market intended.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Free shipping on orders of $ 59 or more. And there's
- 13:46Speaker 2: a discount for veterans. And Crockett partners with Tunnels to Towers,
- 13:50Speaker 2: building mortgage-free homes for the families of fallen service members
- 13:53Speaker 2: and for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. Good coffee,
- 13:57Speaker 2: made in America, doing some good. CrockettCoffee.com. That's Crockett, C-R-O-C-K. E-T-T-Coffee.com.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I toast Jonathan Hutton, who's got an amazing, amazing portrait
- 14:11Speaker 2: of Walt Disney's Davy Crockett that he displays right now,
- 14:15Speaker 2: as I also drink some Crockett coffee. Hutton, that picture
- 14:18Speaker 2: right there, looks of America, and this coffee tastes like America.
- 14:23Speaker 1: The king of the wild frontier, Davy Crockett, drinking the
- 14:26Speaker 1: Blue Ridge or Sun Creek or maybe King Mountain.
- 14:29Speaker 2: You know that man knew his coffee, too. That man
- 14:32Speaker 2: knew his coffee. He was probably frothing milk before anyone else,
- 14:36Speaker 2: Davy Crockett. He had his own homemade milk frother. No
- 14:39Speaker 2: decaf for Davy Crockett, right?
- 14:40Speaker 3: No.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Oh, no. Only leaded. No unleaded for Davy Crockett.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Speaking of just the area I was thinking about for
- 14:47Speaker 1: whatever reason, Davy Crockett High School. And it made me
- 14:49Speaker 1: think about the video that Tennessee put out with Dolly Parton. Phenomenal.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 14:54Speaker 1: It was really good. Really good.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Ten out of ten. My Tennessee Mountain Home, the song.
- 15:00Speaker 2: And that's also now the fourth quarter song. For Tennessee football,
- 15:04Speaker 2: where they're trying to get everybody to sing along to
- 15:05Speaker 2: Dolly Parton going into the fourth quarter of games at
- 15:08Speaker 2: Neyland Stadium. Really well done. We have recently hired someone
- 15:12Speaker 2: at Sporting State that's got some ties to Knoxville and
- 15:15Speaker 2: Tennessee's social media team. That department knocks it out of
- 15:19Speaker 2: the park all the time. I am always amazed by
- 15:23Speaker 2: the level of production and what they get done. And
- 15:26Speaker 2: they are producing people who are leading NFL social media teams.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I mean, that's That's been a good pipeline for people
- 15:32Speaker 2: to get into social media for different teams across sports.
- 15:36Speaker 2: It's been really cool to see.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Chad, not cool to see Notre Dame and Wisconsin uniforms.
- 15:42Speaker 1: The Irish took over in the second half, ended up covering.
- 15:46Speaker 1: But yeah, the screen says it all there. An eyesore
- 15:49Speaker 1: for us.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I do not understand electing to play a game at
- 15:54Speaker 2: legendary old school Lambeau Field. And in response to getting
- 15:59Speaker 2: a game at a neutral side, at legendary old school
- 16:03Speaker 2: Lambeau Field, where you think about the classic Green Bay
- 16:06Speaker 2: Packers uniforms with the yellow helmet and the G and
- 16:11Speaker 2: the green and the yellow, the whole nine yards. You
- 16:15Speaker 2: think about that Packers uniform. And then you're going to
- 16:19Speaker 2: go into that game with two teams with classic unis
- 16:22Speaker 2: in Notre Dame and Wisconsin. And you're going to look
- 16:26Speaker 2: like you're on a mission to Mars with whatever Wisconsin
- 16:30Speaker 2: is wearing. And you couldn't even make out the numbers.
- 16:33Speaker 2: I mean, that was a hellacious game, if you're calling
- 16:36Speaker 2: it from a press box, trying to figure out who's who.
- 16:40Speaker 2: The uniform meets the venue. No, that doesn't say Titletown
- 16:43Speaker 2: to me. Let's just say that. No, but just wear
- 16:46Speaker 2: your uniforms. We all know what Wisconsin and Notre Dame
- 16:49Speaker 2: uniforms look like. Let's put those two classic unis on
- 16:52Speaker 2: the field, head-to-head, At Lambeau Field. Don't go with some
- 16:56Speaker 2: new age fluff when you're putting on uniforms for this game.
- 17:00Speaker 1: It's overthinking it. That's all it is. I like Notre
- 17:05Speaker 1: Dame's uniforms. I just don't like it in this game.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I like the gold or whatever. I like the combo.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I just don't want to see. I want it to
- 17:15Speaker 1: be old school. I want it to be the program.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I want to turn on the TV and know who's playing.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I didn't do that yesterday. If you're going to, speaking
- 17:26Speaker 1: of the program. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:28Speaker 2: This side, over my shoulder over here. Got the new
- 17:31Speaker 2: poster up. Terrific. Looking for other vintage, obscure sports movie posters.
- 17:37Speaker 2: So if anyone has ideas, please hit us up in
- 17:40Speaker 2: the YouTube chat. DM me. Let me know what you
- 17:42Speaker 2: think I should get. I thought it was an atrocious
- 17:44Speaker 2: decision for those uniforms. Those are uniforms I'd wear if
- 17:47Speaker 2: I'm playing a game on a battleship. or if I'm
- 17:49Speaker 2: playing a game in the Sphere in Vegas, not if
- 17:52Speaker 2: I'm playing a game in Lambeau Field. As you said, Hutton,
- 17:55Speaker 2: the uniform needs to meet the venue. And in this case,
- 17:58Speaker 2: wear your classic uniforms if you're Notre Dame and Wisconsin
- 18:02Speaker 2: and don't wear that. Here's another takeaway from last night's game.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Luke Fickle's done. Luke Fickle's done at Wisconsin. That was
- 18:12Speaker 2: an uninspired team outside of getting off to a hot
- 18:15Speaker 2: start and being in it for a little while. I'm
- 18:17Speaker 2: watching that game late and then trying to score late
- 18:20Speaker 2: in the game with Notre Dame in a prevent defense
- 18:23Speaker 2: and not being able to do anything. And yes, I
- 18:25Speaker 2: did have money on that game with Hard Rock Bet.
- 18:27Speaker 2: And yes, I lost because they couldn't go score a
- 18:30Speaker 2: meaningless touchdown for a backdoor cover late. So yes, I
- 18:33Speaker 2: was angry about that too. I think Luke Fickle is
- 18:36Speaker 2: going to have a hard time keeping his job at Wisconsin,
- 18:39Speaker 2: even to the end of the year. I think this
- 18:42Speaker 2: could be, and that's not a Wisconsin thing to do usually,
- 18:44Speaker 2: but this could be a mid-season decision for Wisconsin.
- 18:47Speaker 1: It was cool when the tight end caught the pass
- 18:50Speaker 1: or caught the touchdown or whatever. And the broadcast pointed
- 18:55Speaker 1: out that what his father and grandfather both played for
- 18:58Speaker 1: the Packers. That was pretty cool. Look, CJ Carr, I
- 19:04Speaker 1: like him. I'm curious to see how he develops over
- 19:06Speaker 1: the course of the season. And here's the transfer portal
- 19:10Speaker 1: coming to play a huge factor with the pick six
- 19:13Speaker 1: in the game. You know, broke it wide open there.
- 19:16Speaker 1: So Notre Dame looks ready for another playoff run. And
- 19:21Speaker 1: as we know, if they just keep it to two losses,
- 19:24Speaker 1: three for that matter, the committee is going to put
- 19:26Speaker 1: them in. And they've got like, I think they've got
- 19:29Speaker 1: maybe three more tough games. This is, we know there's,
- 19:32Speaker 1: when I say tough games, Chad, you know what I mean?
- 19:34Speaker 1: This is not the gauntlet run that some of these
- 19:37Speaker 1: other programs are going to be making. They benefit from
- 19:40Speaker 1: their schedule and, you know, they can have a hiccup
- 19:44Speaker 1: and still make the playoff. And they certainly didn't allow
- 19:48Speaker 1: that to happen against Wisconsin.
- 19:51Speaker 2: I know it wasn't, it's week one, and we could
- 19:54Speaker 2: preface everything we say today and this week about that
- 19:56Speaker 2: with these games. It could not have gone any worse
- 19:58Speaker 2: for the Big Ten or better for the SEC in
- 20:01Speaker 2: week one. The SEC, for the first time in a
- 20:03Speaker 2: long time, maybe ever, goes 16-0. for their conference over
- 20:07Speaker 2: the first week. And they had some tough games in there.
- 20:10Speaker 2: We mentioned Auburn surviving, Ole Miss, LSU pounds, Clemson has
- 20:15Speaker 2: only a 10-point favorite, 51-10. But not only that, I mean,
- 20:18Speaker 2: everybody completely dominated their overmatched opponent the way they should
- 20:23Speaker 2: outside of Arkansas. Who stumbled around, who may be even
- 20:27Speaker 2: a little bit worse than we thought, against North Alabama.
- 20:30Speaker 2: And Vandy, who I thought stumbled around quite a while,
- 20:33Speaker 2: did not look good. But outside of that, everybody else
- 20:35Speaker 2: looked good. Now look at the Big Ten. You've got
- 20:38Speaker 2: Jed Fish yelling at sideline reporters. because his team can't
- 20:41Speaker 2: get half a yard to close the half out against
- 20:43Speaker 2: Washington State. By the way, people, Washington State no longer
- 20:46Speaker 2: in the Pac-12, no longer a powerful team the way
- 20:50Speaker 2: they were under Mike Leach, a bad football team. You've
- 20:53Speaker 2: got Rutgers losing. You've got Michigan losing. Let's face it,
- 20:56Speaker 2: they got an extra play, but they lost. They're losing
- 21:01Speaker 2: the public appeal today also. You had Oregon in a battle.
- 21:07Speaker 2: with Boise State as a big favorite even, right? And
- 21:10Speaker 2: I know Boise State typically plays Oregon well and all that,
- 21:14Speaker 2: but Oregon did not look great in that game. I
- 21:17Speaker 2: thought a lot of teams just underwhelmed in the Big
- 21:20Speaker 2: Ten this past weekend. Compared to the SEC, it wasn't
- 21:23Speaker 2: even close. I mean, we're one week into the season, but,
- 21:26Speaker 2: I mean, if we're going to shape perception throughout the year,
- 21:30Speaker 2: conference to conference, based on who should get more teams
- 21:33Speaker 2: in the college football playoff, week one goes to the SEC.
- 21:36Speaker 3: In a knockout.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Not even a technical knockout. In an absolute knockout, the
- 21:41Speaker 2: SEC looked better top to bottom than the Big Ten
- 21:43Speaker 2: in one week.
- 21:44Speaker 1: In week two, we're going to see the conferences match
- 21:47Speaker 1: up head to head as well. I like the fact
- 21:51Speaker 1: that we're seeing on campus, Oklahoma take on Michigan. And
- 21:57Speaker 1: then we'll see Tennessee, Georgia Tech's another one. I know
- 21:59Speaker 1: that's not Big Ten, but that's a measuring type game
- 22:03Speaker 1: right there.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Tennessee Oakland was a 13.5 point favor in that game.
- 22:06Speaker 2: You also have Minnesota versus Mississippi State. Two teams sort
- 22:10Speaker 2: of at the same level of their conferences going head-to-head
- 22:14Speaker 2: in a toss-up game with Mississippi State on the road
- 22:17Speaker 2: at Minnesota. Some opportunities for head-to-head for sure.
- 22:20Speaker 1: You mentioned the Oregon game against Boise. Jenny Dell, I
- 22:26Speaker 1: want to give a shout out here because this is
- 22:28Speaker 1: like the opposite halftime report of what we would hear
- 22:33Speaker 1: or what we have heard in the past. There was
- 22:41Speaker 1: another sideline reporter who admitted to making stuff up. Other
- 22:44Speaker 1: than Aaron Andrews, there was someone else.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Karissa Thompson.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Thank you, yes. When they can't talk to a coach
- 22:51Speaker 1: or the coach is boring, they'll add in details just
- 22:53Speaker 1: to make it a report.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Or they'll make up a conversation that didn't happen.
- 22:58Speaker 1: There's no way Jenny Dell made this up on CBS.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Dan Lanning quite fired up. I'm going to choose my
- 23:07Speaker 4: words with this one. He said we need to turn
- 23:08Speaker 4: it up and turn it on.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Yeah, he is very.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Disappointed with the way that this team came out. He
- 23:16Speaker 4: said we came out flat. We are beating ourselves. We
- 23:18Speaker 4: have to stop with the silly mistakes. Guys, he said
- 23:20Speaker 4: you are going to see a very different energy out
- 23:23Speaker 4: of this team in the second half.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I knew it was going to be interesting at halftime,
- 23:26Speaker 1: and apparently it was. I got to ask, Jenny, can
- 23:29Speaker 1: you imagine what the energy was in that locker room?
- 23:32Speaker 4: I would not have wanted to be in there. Just
- 23:35Speaker 4: talking to him afterwards, I will also say offensively, he
- 23:37Speaker 4: said we need to win on conversion downs. I'll throw
- 23:40Speaker 4: that in there as well.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Okay, well, that's good clean fun. Good clean fun is
- 23:46Speaker 1: really funny to me. Chad, I don't have an issue
- 23:51Speaker 1: with Oregon after watching this game. They will be the
- 23:56Speaker 1: Oregon Ducks throughout this season because of their coach, because
- 24:01Speaker 1: of the locked-in approach that Dan Lanning's bringing.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Well, and I think it's twofold here. Dante Moore looked
- 24:06Speaker 2: the part of a Heisman contender, too. He played well.
- 24:10Speaker 2: He had a great statistical game against Boise State. So
- 24:14Speaker 2: that's where I feel good about it. Flip that to Michigan,
- 24:16Speaker 2: and it's not just, boy, Michigan almost lost to Western Michigan.
- 24:21Speaker 2: They couldn't score. Against Western Michigan. What is their identity?
- 24:26Speaker 2: We know what Kyle Whittingham, his identity was at Utah,
- 24:29Speaker 2: but what is their identity? With Bryce Underwood as their quarterback,
- 24:32Speaker 2: I have a hard time answering that watching that game.
- 24:36Speaker 2: I feel pretty down on Michigan after one game, rightfully so.
- 24:41Speaker 2: I'm with you, Hutton. It was closer than I thought.
- 24:43Speaker 2: The defense got carved up with the run game by
- 24:46Speaker 2: Boise more than I was expecting in that one. They
- 24:49Speaker 2: got a lot of things to figure out there. You
- 24:50Speaker 2: got a number of games where Coaches are leaving the
- 24:53Speaker 2: game saying, boy, we've got a lot to work on.
- 24:55Speaker 2: We're nowhere near a finished product. I'm watching last night
- 25:00Speaker 2: and Ole Miss and Pete Golding postgame saying, boy, thrilled
- 25:04Speaker 2: to get a win. That's a really good team over there,
- 25:06Speaker 2: but we've got a lot of work to do. That
- 25:08Speaker 2: was his takeaway after the game. Six minutes, four minutes left,
- 25:12Speaker 2: something like that. Yeah. Yeah, there's a lot of teams. Again,
- 25:16Speaker 2: we know it's week one. There's a lot of teams,
- 25:23Speaker 2: a lot of work to do. I just feel like
- 25:25Speaker 2: I watch some teams and I say, this is what
- 25:28Speaker 2: they're going to be. I watch LSU and I got
- 25:30Speaker 2: a pretty good idea of what they're going to be
- 25:31Speaker 2: all year. And to me, what we saw was a
- 25:33Speaker 2: playoff team. That's a team I know Clay wrote about
- 25:36Speaker 2: it starting 11. And I'm kind of with Clay on
- 25:38Speaker 2: this philosophy. They should be the number one team in America.
- 25:41Speaker 2: You know, if you're going into preseason with here are
- 25:43Speaker 2: the preseason expectations, you then, once you get one week
- 25:46Speaker 2: of games, you got to reset each week about what
- 25:49Speaker 2: you saw. And no one was more impressive than LSU.
- 25:52Speaker 2: this past weekend. So I'd be fine with them being
- 25:54Speaker 2: the number one team, like Clay wrote in his column.
- 25:57Speaker 2: You can read it at sportandstate.com. But they're not going
- 26:01Speaker 2: to be. But I do think I watch LSU, Hutton,
- 26:03Speaker 2: and I say, they are going to get after you
- 26:06Speaker 2: on defense with Blake Baker's defense. We know what Lane
- 26:09Speaker 2: Kiffin can do offensively. He's got another guy who can
- 26:12Speaker 2: run the football in Sam Leavitt, who had some really
- 26:14Speaker 2: good runs in that game, and he can really utilize
- 26:17Speaker 2: the guys like that within his offense. I feel like
- 26:20Speaker 2: I know what LSU is going to be throughout the season.
- 26:23Speaker 2: I came away from certain games not really knowing. A
- 26:25Speaker 2: game that I stayed up and watched late was Nico
- 26:28Speaker 2: and UCLA against Cal. How was that? I thought Nico
- 26:31Speaker 2: played well. His stats didn't really show it. He threw
- 26:36Speaker 2: for like 145, 150 yards. He ran the ball pretty
- 26:39Speaker 2: well at times. But UCLA wins 45-24 because Cal turns
- 26:43Speaker 2: it over three times, and UCLA's defense made some big
- 26:46Speaker 2: plays and set UCLA up. But UCLA looked better than
- 26:49Speaker 2: I thought. And I think that's the Bob Chesney effect
- 26:52Speaker 2: coming over from James Madison right away. I think Nico's
- 26:56Speaker 2: going to have a good year. I mean, I really do.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I think UCLA could surprise in the Big Ten, especially
- 27:00Speaker 2: given the way the conference looked for most of the day.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I watched a lot of the Nebraska game with Angie
- 27:05Speaker 2: watching it. Very underwhelmed. They're in a dogfight. Most of
- 27:09Speaker 2: the first half into the third quarter with Ohio. I just–
- 27:13Speaker 2: it's tough to really like– What you saw in the
- 27:16Speaker 2: Big Ten. And oh, by the way, my South Dakota
- 27:17Speaker 2: State Jackrabbits. We'll get into our hard rock picks later.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Had a great chance.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I followed you on that game.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Down a score. And then I know that Northwestern scored late,
- 27:27Speaker 2: but they lose 34-18. But yeah, I don't think the
- 27:30Speaker 2: Jackrabbits played very well. But Northwestern maybe is a team,
- 27:33Speaker 2: just like UCLA, that maybe they end up being a
- 27:36Speaker 2: little bit better than we expected.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Chad, coming up, John Talty will join us. We're going
- 27:40Speaker 1: to discuss a lot of Lane Kiffin. We'll talk more about...
- 27:44Speaker 1: Kiffin off the field and and what makes everything tick
- 27:48Speaker 1: with him being willing to play the villain we'll mention
- 27:50Speaker 1: him a lot more in that setting than what we
- 27:52Speaker 1: saw on game day where you know we we're going
- 27:54Speaker 1: to see more of a gold retriever than we will
- 27:57Speaker 1: uh asking questions about uh Lane Kiffin and when he's
- 28:01Speaker 1: on set it was uh Chad you know I love
- 28:05Speaker 1: dogs and I love gold retrievers you do this one
- 28:08Speaker 1: this one annoys me having a mascot is one thing
- 28:12Speaker 1: that's fine But the constant, you know, the therapy dog
- 28:18Speaker 1: or whatever. And then we're seeing this where they've got
- 28:22Speaker 1: a pop-up shop now for Peter. You know, okay, but
- 28:27Speaker 1: does it have to be forced? Can we not just
- 28:30Speaker 1: have it where, you know, it looks like I'm not
- 28:33Speaker 1: trying to spread joy as it says here. This doesn't
- 28:35Speaker 1: bring me joy. This just annoys me. And I can't
- 28:38Speaker 1: help but admit that.
- 28:40Speaker 2: I like spectacle. I like big events. You do too, Hutton.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I know we both like professional wrestling from that standpoint.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Yeah, the production.
- 28:49Speaker 2: But the Disneyfication of ESPN is overkill at times. And
- 28:56Speaker 2: I'll say it started with the start of the show
- 28:58Speaker 2: when Laney Wilson does the theme song live to open it.
- 29:03Speaker 1: And not good.
- 29:04Speaker 2: And I remember sitting there and turning to Angie watching,
- 29:06Speaker 2: you know, got my coffee, got breakfast, had breakfast. Two
- 29:10Speaker 2: of Evie's friends over spending the night eating cinnamon rolls,
- 29:12Speaker 2: and I'm watching them start a game day before driving
- 29:14Speaker 2: them to practice. And I turn to Angie and I say,
- 29:18Speaker 2: the Disneyfication of all things football and college football on ESPN,
- 29:23Speaker 2: I don't mind creating spectacle and creating big events. They
- 29:27Speaker 2: do a good job of that. But some of this
- 29:29Speaker 2: is just overkill. I'm thinking, this is too much with
- 29:32Speaker 2: Laney Wilson. The dog stuff. The dog is very cute.
- 29:35Speaker 2: They cut away to the dog with a hat on, Peter,
- 29:38Speaker 2: in the bus. that Herb Street's on. I'm like, it's
- 29:41Speaker 2: a really cute dog. But then when you take it
- 29:44Speaker 2: and you monetize it with a pop-up shop, I don't know.
- 29:48Speaker 2: I'm not some 90-year-old guy screaming from my front lawn saying,
- 29:52Speaker 2: stick to football, stick to football and all that. It
- 29:54Speaker 2: doesn't have to be like that. I think the kicking
- 29:56Speaker 2: contest is awesome. Like with McAfee, that's a really cool
- 29:59Speaker 2: thing they've done. And it's a really cool activity. Some
- 30:03Speaker 2: of it, man, it's just too much.
- 30:05Speaker 1: It's like Doug the Pug is funny because it's an
- 30:08Speaker 1: ugly dog. If they're showing that, whenever. It's overkill. It's
- 30:13Speaker 1: all the time.
- 30:15Speaker 2: It's in the booth.
- 30:17Speaker 1: At the games at night. Like I just said, do
- 30:21Speaker 1: it once and just let me do something else. It's just,
- 30:25Speaker 1: it comes down to just like hit the, I want
- 30:28Speaker 1: more of the hard hitting news than what we're getting.
- 30:31Speaker 1: It doesn't have to be all of that, Chad, but
- 30:33Speaker 1: I need some of it.
- 30:36Speaker 2: In honest analysis, right? Like I think when they're at
- 30:39Speaker 2: their best, Saban's getting irritated about something because he saw
- 30:44Speaker 2: something that really crawls under his skin. and he's going
- 30:46Speaker 2: to give you the honest assessment. Everyone on that show
- 30:49Speaker 2: is really good at what they do. They're polished professionals
- 30:54Speaker 2: to be on a television set, on a desk, and
- 30:57Speaker 2: do the job they do. Reese Davis is terrific. He's excellent.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Desmond Howard's good. Nick Saban's great. Kirk Herbstreit is an
- 31:05Speaker 2: all-timer and really good at what he does and has
- 31:07Speaker 2: done it for years and years. He's great at calling games.
- 31:10Speaker 2: He's the rare guy who's really good at calling games
- 31:12Speaker 2: in a booth. He's really good on a desk too.
- 31:14Speaker 3: Yes.
- 31:15Speaker 2: And does a great job. I just, I want more
- 31:17Speaker 2: of them at times and less Laney Wilson live in
- 31:20Speaker 2: Baton Rouge opening it and less Peter's pop-up store and
- 31:25Speaker 2: less explanation of old red, the flag that flies, you know,
- 31:30Speaker 2: at every college game day. Like it's the, it's the,
- 31:34Speaker 2: for lack of a better term, it's the masturbatory part
- 31:38Speaker 2: of college game day and ESPN that gets a little
- 31:42Speaker 2: gross and much like it was gross when McAfee and
- 31:45Speaker 2: Kiffin were having a psychology study together about two of
- 31:49Speaker 2: the most hated men in America and how he really
- 31:51Speaker 2: had to rely on Pat McAfee throughout the week. And
- 31:54Speaker 2: everyone's just applauding. Come on. At some point, let's get
- 31:56Speaker 2: over ourselves a little bit and let's get back to
- 31:59Speaker 2: talking about the game some more.
- 32:00Speaker 1: And the headlines. We'll do that with John Talti of
- 32:03Speaker 1: CBS Sports with his piece on Lane Kiffin. A lot
- 32:06Speaker 1: to discuss with him. He's straight ahead here on Hutton
- 32:08Speaker 1: and Withrow. It is Hutton and Withrow presented by Hard
- 32:12Speaker 1: Rock Bet. XXXY Athletics. It's founded by Jennifer Say, former
- 32:17Speaker 1: national champion, gymnast, former Levi's brand president. She walked away
- 32:20Speaker 1: from a corporate job rather than just say something that
- 32:23Speaker 1: she didn't believe. And she started XXXY Athletics instead. The mission,
- 32:27Speaker 1: in their words, empower female athletes, take a stand for
- 32:30Speaker 1: fair competition, and they call it the T that launched
- 32:33Speaker 1: a movement. This is real athletic apparel, Chad, and it's
- 32:36Speaker 1: where you can get Clay's official apparel, Nashville Balls gear.
- 32:40Speaker 2: All the Nashville Balls gear at XXXY, Clay Travis' WNBA franchise,
- 32:45Speaker 2: the official provider for Nashville Balls merch. Tees, trucker hats
- 32:49Speaker 2: out now. If you want the shirt, that's where you
- 32:50Speaker 2: get it. New customers get 20% off your first order.
- 32:53Speaker 2: When you sign up and free shipping over $ 100, XXXYAthletics.com.
- 32:57Speaker 2: That's XX-XYAthletics.com. Lane being Lane.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Is the book from John Talti, the biography on all
- 33:08Speaker 1: things Lane Kiffin, all things Lane Trey. John, thanks for
- 33:11Speaker 1: joining us this morning, man.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Appreciate you guys having me on.
- 33:15Speaker 1: What is it about Lane Kiffin that allows fans to
- 33:19Speaker 1: both hate the guy but forgive him enough to where
- 33:23Speaker 1: they would actually want him to be their coach? Tennessee
- 33:27Speaker 1: certainly did this recently. He's the villain at Ole Miss.
- 33:32Speaker 1: but he continues to get all the pub he wants.
- 33:37Speaker 5: He's entertaining, and I think he has that Howard Stern
- 33:41Speaker 5: kind of quality to him where you can't wait to
- 33:43Speaker 5: see what he's going to do next and even talking
- 33:46Speaker 5: to Ole Miss I was talking to an Ole Miss
- 33:47Speaker 5: booster who's obviously not a huge fan of Lane Kiffin
- 33:50Speaker 5: now but it was like I miss him I miss
- 33:52Speaker 5: waking up like what is he going to tweet today
- 33:54Speaker 5: what is he going to say today like there's an
- 33:56Speaker 5: excitement with Lane Kiffin that frankly almost nobody else is
- 34:00Speaker 5: capable of doing in college football at this point and
- 34:02Speaker 5: so that's kind of the thing that makes him you know,
- 34:04Speaker 5: I think so polarizing.
- 34:06Speaker 3: I don't know that.
- 34:07Speaker 5: Anybody has a, man, he's fine. Like you love this guy,
- 34:10Speaker 5: you hate him, you feel some type of way about him.
- 34:12Speaker 5: And that's what, you know, made him so interesting to
- 34:15Speaker 5: write about and so interesting to talk about.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Is he ever going to feel settled or does he
- 34:20Speaker 1: always want to bounce around? He embraces the villain role,
- 34:24Speaker 1: but he does so at the peril of the program
- 34:27Speaker 1: he's currently coaching.
- 34:29Speaker 5: And I think deep down, he doesn't want to be
- 34:31Speaker 5: the villain. I think he realizes in this current moment,
- 34:34Speaker 5: he has to be. But I think in his mind,
- 34:36Speaker 5: he's still going to be the hero one day. And
- 34:38Speaker 5: I think he's talked both publicly and privately of like,
- 34:41Speaker 5: one day the villain can turn into the hero. And
- 34:44Speaker 5: I think he thinks if I win enough, eventually they'll
- 34:46Speaker 5: love me. There's certainly, and I do tell it in
- 34:49Speaker 5: the book, there's something inside of him that makes him
- 34:52Speaker 5: a chaser. He likes to chase, I think, more than
- 34:54Speaker 5: sometimes the catch, right? And so I think when things
- 34:57Speaker 5: start to get normal and settled for him, he thinks
- 35:01Speaker 5: it's boring.
- 35:01Speaker 3: And I think he feels like, I got to shake
- 35:03Speaker 3: it up somehow.
- 35:04Speaker 5: And so you've seen him, whether it's in his professional relationships,
- 35:07Speaker 5: his personal relationships, like, Once it starts to settle into
- 35:11Speaker 5: that like nice phase where you're watching a movie of
- 35:14Speaker 5: your girlfriend or whatever, like he's like, oh, I'm boring.
- 35:16Speaker 5: I got to get out. I got to get back
- 35:17Speaker 5: out there. And so that's just like how he treats,
- 35:19Speaker 5: you know, some of the jobs he's worked at too.
- 35:21Speaker 5: Like just when it feels great and everyone's happy, he's like,
- 35:24Speaker 5: I got to make a move.
- 35:26Speaker 2: How much of this is, as you, you know, as
- 35:29Speaker 2: you titled it, Lane being Lane, and then it's legitimately
- 35:32Speaker 2: who he is. How much of it is, boy, I
- 35:34Speaker 2: think I can get a response from this and this
- 35:36Speaker 2: is going to help the attention on my program. So
- 35:39Speaker 2: I'm going to go and do this because he's a
- 35:40Speaker 2: very smart guy. He's also not like outwardly charismatic or
- 35:45Speaker 2: a big personality to talk to. Right. So I wonder
- 35:48Speaker 2: how much of this is planned and how much is
- 35:50Speaker 2: unplanned when we're talking about Lane Kiffin.
- 35:53Speaker 5: I think it's a mix and I think to your
- 35:55Speaker 5: point I do think there's still a a fan divide
- 35:58Speaker 5: in terms of what they think Lane Kiffin is and
- 36:00Speaker 5: what he really is and so if you guys have
- 36:02Speaker 5: you've been around him like he's not like jumping off
- 36:05Speaker 5: the screen right like he's kind of quiet I could
- 36:07Speaker 5: argue awkward at times when you're in person with him
- 36:10Speaker 5: and like that doesn't necessarily square with this idea of
- 36:13Speaker 5: like the Loki of college football who's trolling people and
- 36:16Speaker 5: sending funny tweets and all that so There is definitely that,
- 36:19Speaker 5: I think, divide. I think some of that he realizes like, okay,
- 36:23Speaker 5: I can move the needle. I can push the envelope
- 36:26Speaker 5: on Twitter or with text or whatever in a way
- 36:29Speaker 5: that maybe I can't in person as well. So I
- 36:32Speaker 5: think he certainly knows that if people are talking about him,
- 36:35Speaker 5: that can be a good thing.
- 36:36Speaker 3: And I think.
- 36:37Speaker 5: Especially if you look from kind of FAU on, I
- 36:40Speaker 5: think he realized, all right, I'm down at FAU. Nobody
- 36:42Speaker 5: really cares about FAU. I got to shake things up
- 36:45Speaker 5: if anyone's even going to talk about us. And I
- 36:46Speaker 5: think that carried over to Ole Miss. Some of this
- 36:49Speaker 5: LSU stuff, I put more in the he can't help
- 36:52Speaker 5: himself category where he probably does not really need to
- 36:55Speaker 5: be doing that, but he just can't help himself from
- 36:58Speaker 5: pushing the envelope, from making comments in Vanity Fair and
- 37:01Speaker 5: all that kind of stuff.
- 37:03Speaker 2: John, and the name of the book is Lane Being Lane.
- 37:05Speaker 2: John Talti with CBS Sports with us. John, I got
- 37:08Speaker 2: to ask, with the LSU stuff and with everything going
- 37:12Speaker 2: on with the lawsuit, his school's being sued, he's being
- 37:15Speaker 2: sued personally. Does Lane Kiffin stand down in this? Because
- 37:19Speaker 2: common sense would say these three players are not worth it,
- 37:23Speaker 2: especially when you see what the team looked like on
- 37:24Speaker 2: Saturday night in that first game. Do you think he
- 37:27Speaker 2: stands down or will they continue to fight?
- 37:30Speaker 3: I mean, to this point, he has, right?
- 37:32Speaker 5: I mean, there was that kind of that moment, that
- 37:34Speaker 5: showdown Friday night. Like, are you going to put him
- 37:36Speaker 5: on the roster or are you not? And they ultimately
- 37:39Speaker 5: did not, which I think was a smart decision, frankly,
- 37:42Speaker 5: from some of the things that I was hearing behind
- 37:44Speaker 5: the scenes of the level of frustration within the SEC
- 37:47Speaker 5: about LSU pushing it that far. I think now you
- 37:50Speaker 5: let things play out in the courts and you say, hey,
- 37:52Speaker 5: you know, I don't have anything to do with that.
- 37:54Speaker 3: Things are, you know, we'll see what the hearings are.
- 37:56Speaker 3: We'll see what the results are.
- 37:58Speaker 5: But to your point, I think what was wild about
- 38:00Speaker 5: it to so many people around college football was that
- 38:03Speaker 5: this is, from people that I've talked to, potentially the
- 38:05Speaker 5: most expensive, if not the most expensive roster in college football,
- 38:08Speaker 5: in that $ 50 million range. I mean, it's a lot
- 38:10Speaker 5: of money invested into this program. We saw against Clemson
- 38:13Speaker 5: how good they were. And throughout, people were saying, it's
- 38:17Speaker 5: not worth it. Why is he doing this? And I
- 38:19Speaker 5: think it got to a point where Lane didn't want
- 38:21Speaker 5: to lose. He doesn't like being told he can't do things.
- 38:24Speaker 5: I mean, people remember telling me when he was at Alabama,
- 38:26Speaker 5: like the worst thing Nick Saban could do would tell
- 38:28Speaker 5: him not to do something because he would just want
- 38:30Speaker 5: to do it that much more.
- 38:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 38:31Speaker 5: And that's who he is. So if you're having the
- 38:33Speaker 5: SEC say you're not allowed to do this, he's going
- 38:35Speaker 5: to say, watch me, I will. And he got right
- 38:39Speaker 5: to that line about as far as he could. So
- 38:41Speaker 5: I wouldn't be shocked if that continues to play out.
- 38:44Speaker 5: But I think certainly he realized four heads prevailed that
- 38:48Speaker 5: if he had put those players on the roster, there
- 38:50Speaker 5: could have been long-term devastating consequences for LSU.
- 38:54Speaker 1: John, what does he think of Greg Sankey and what
- 38:57Speaker 1: does Greg Sankey think of him?
- 38:59Speaker 5: What's interesting is that I've heard that they actually have
- 39:01Speaker 5: a pretty good relationship. And I think there's something that's
- 39:05Speaker 5: interesting about Lane. And I think it goes back to
- 39:07Speaker 5: his dad, Monty, that like, he does look up to
- 39:10Speaker 5: people who are older and in positions of power. And
- 39:13Speaker 5: so I do think there's, I remember talking to someone,
- 39:15Speaker 5: they're like, you would be surprised how at times how
- 39:18Speaker 5: positively Lane would speak of Greg Sankey. Now, I think
- 39:21Speaker 5: this recent battle might have changed things a bit, but
- 39:25Speaker 5: coming into things, they actually had a pretty good working relationship.
- 39:29Speaker 5: And I think Lane appreciates what Greg has done for
- 39:33Speaker 5: the conference and vice versa. But certainly, LSU dragging Greg
- 39:37Speaker 5: Sankey down to Baton Rouge to have to testify down there,
- 39:41Speaker 5: I think, didn't go over super well at certain corners
- 39:44Speaker 5: of the SEC.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Are you... Are you surprised that Saban backs him as
- 39:50Speaker 1: much as he does publicly? And the only way that
- 39:53Speaker 1: would happen is the respect that Saban would have for
- 39:55Speaker 1: him as a coach behind the scenes, right? The work ethic,
- 39:58Speaker 1: the grind. But even Saban is reluctant to say anything
- 40:02Speaker 1: about this pro athlete stuff. Like he's wanting to talk
- 40:06Speaker 1: ball on the college game day set. I'm intrigued by
- 40:09Speaker 1: that as much as an old school approach Saban has
- 40:11Speaker 1: to this.
- 40:13Speaker 5: Well, go back a year ago when there was the,
- 40:15Speaker 5: should Lane Kiffin be allowed to coach? And Nick Saban
- 40:19Speaker 5: came out basically in favor of allowing Lane Kiffin to
- 40:23Speaker 5: keep coaching. And I'm sitting there thinking- this guy fired
- 40:26Speaker 5: Lane Kiffin in between the semifinal national championship. The only
- 40:29Speaker 5: guy that's ever happened to in the history of college
- 40:31Speaker 5: football because he was distracted and didn't want his time divided.
- 40:34Speaker 3: So like that rang untrue to me.
- 40:37Speaker 5: Now I think there's obviously, I don't want to make
- 40:40Speaker 5: a huge deal about it, but they both share the
- 40:42Speaker 5: same agent. That agent's a very important person. I'm sure
- 40:45Speaker 5: that person can pass along talking points back and forth.
- 40:48Speaker 5: I also think I view it almost like a little
- 40:50Speaker 5: bit of like that grandfather thing of like, Enough time
- 40:53Speaker 5: has passed that he might look back on some of
- 40:55Speaker 5: it and laugh a little bit, whereas in the moment,
- 40:58Speaker 5: they definitely did not get along. That's very well established,
- 41:02Speaker 5: the excerpt of my book, I think, further established what
- 41:04Speaker 5: was going on behind the scenes. But I think now
- 41:06Speaker 5: he can be like, ah, Lane being Lane, and he
- 41:08Speaker 5: can focus more on the fact that he is an
- 41:11Speaker 5: incredible football coach and doesn't have to worry about everything
- 41:14Speaker 5: Lane's doing behind the scenes that used to drive him nuts.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Let's talk about the program, John, that he left behind
- 41:20Speaker 2: in Ole Miss. How sustainable is this? How much of
- 41:23Speaker 2: it was Lane Kiffin? How much is clearly an investment
- 41:27Speaker 2: in that program? And we talked to Walker Jones from
- 41:30Speaker 2: the Grove Collective last week about this before the Louisville game.
- 41:34Speaker 2: How much do they feel like we can just keep
- 41:36Speaker 2: this thing rolling with Pete Golding and pay top dollar
- 41:39Speaker 2: for players and continue to be a factor at the
- 41:42Speaker 2: highest levels of the sport?
- 41:44Speaker 5: I had somebody at a rival SEC school tell me
- 41:47Speaker 5: recently that no one has gotten better bang for their
- 41:50Speaker 5: buck than Ole Miss. And a lot of that is
- 41:52Speaker 5: because of Walker Jones, who I think is one of
- 41:53Speaker 5: the best collective people in the country. So I think
- 41:55Speaker 5: they have maximized about as well as anyone possibly could.
- 42:00Speaker 5: I think the question you would have, and I think
- 42:02Speaker 5: the question that Lane had, is like, are we already
- 42:04Speaker 5: hitting our ceiling? Can we push further? Like, LSU clearly
- 42:09Speaker 5: poured a ton of money into this roster. can almost
- 42:12Speaker 5: keep pushing forward. But I think that they have believed
- 42:15Speaker 5: that they do have a sustainable thing there. Certainly the
- 42:18Speaker 5: roster is very good. You know, last night, an incredible
- 42:22Speaker 5: game against Louisville. I think it, both showed the brilliance
- 42:26Speaker 5: and what they have, but also maybe ask some questions
- 42:29Speaker 5: of like, is the offense going to be as good
- 42:31Speaker 5: without Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weiss Jr.? Is the defense
- 42:34Speaker 5: going to figure out some of their things as Pete
- 42:36Speaker 5: Golding balances being head coach and defensive coordinator? So there's
- 42:39Speaker 5: still some things I think to figure out. But, you know,
- 42:42Speaker 5: Lane gets a lot of the credit, understandably so. But
- 42:44Speaker 5: as you guys know, like, It took a administration who
- 42:48Speaker 5: was all in on let's go for it. It took
- 42:50Speaker 5: people like Walker Jones to be able to go out
- 42:52Speaker 5: and raise the money because as I'm sure he would
- 42:54Speaker 5: tell you, Lane Kiffin had no interest in doing that.
- 42:57Speaker 5: He was never going to do donor dinners and things
- 42:59Speaker 5: like that. It's not what Lane Kiffin does. So there
- 43:01Speaker 5: are a lot of people that made that thing work.
- 43:03Speaker 5: And Pete Golding, he was the star recruiter on that staff.
- 43:06Speaker 5: And so I think they believe he can keep this
- 43:08Speaker 5: thing rolling. But certainly this year is a critical one
- 43:10Speaker 5: to keep that feeling like our money is worth investing.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Into this program. Who around him would not speak to
- 43:17Speaker 1: you on this?
- 43:19Speaker 3: Wayne Kiffin?
- 43:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:23Speaker 5: I mean, I'm trying to think. I guess you reach
- 43:26Speaker 5: out to people, and if they didn't get back to me,
- 43:27Speaker 5: I guess all of those people.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 43:30Speaker 5: I think a lot of them did. Listen, I didn't
- 43:34Speaker 5: interview Nick Sabre for the book. There's some of those, certainly.
- 43:39Speaker 5: I'm trying to go through my head of people who
- 43:41Speaker 5: I reached out to.
- 43:42Speaker 1: What about his family? The storylines, because he trends younger
- 43:46Speaker 1: on social and all that. Were they into this?
- 43:50Speaker 3: I kind of went through him. I didn't want to...
- 43:54Speaker 3: text his daughter off to the side.
- 43:55Speaker 5: Right.
- 43:56Speaker 3: It's kind of like, Hey, if you wanted to.
- 43:57Speaker 5: And so that ended up not playing out, but I,
- 44:00Speaker 5: there were, he told me at least, and I'm going
- 44:02Speaker 5: to try to take him at his word for it.
- 44:04Speaker 3: He told me that anyone that reached.
- 44:06Speaker 5: Out to him for permission to talk to me, he
- 44:08Speaker 5: said that they could. Now, if that's true or not,
- 44:11Speaker 5: I don't know, but like I talked to like his
- 44:13Speaker 5: childhood best friend and his high school football.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Coach and his roommates over the years.
- 44:17Speaker 5: So I, I think I got a lot of people
- 44:19Speaker 5: that are in his circle and like, I do think
- 44:22Speaker 5: it was important for this book to have some balance of,
- 44:26Speaker 5: as you can imagine, there are a lot of people
- 44:27Speaker 5: who don't like Lane Kiffin. But you want people who
- 44:30Speaker 5: do say positive things about, all right, give me the
- 44:32Speaker 5: best possible interpretation of Lane's actions here. And so that's
- 44:35Speaker 5: where I think like some family friends, childhood best friend,
- 44:38Speaker 5: people like that helped me understand some of that stuff.
- 44:41Speaker 1: We hope there's a Joey Freshwater chapter in this.
- 44:45Speaker 5: Oh, there's some Joey Fetchwater stuff in there.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Yeah. I can't wait to read it. I'm going to
- 44:50Speaker 2: very soon, but John, great, great job on all this.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:53Speaker 2: It's been, it's been fun following the coverage and obviously
- 44:56Speaker 2: a key time right now for Lane Kiffin and the
- 44:59Speaker 2: Lane train with everybody talking about him. Yeah.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Always interesting with Lane. Yeah.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Thanks, John. Appreciate you, man.
- 45:06Speaker 3: Appreciate it.
- 45:08Speaker 1: John, I can't wait to read this. This is gonna
- 45:09Speaker 1: be great. And it's dropping right before the matchup against
- 45:11Speaker 1: Ole Miss, which is brilliant.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Perfect timing.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Um, It's time, coming up, to find out what we
- 45:18Speaker 1: made this weekend. Where we put it on the line
- 45:21Speaker 1: the week prior, and we go into the football weekend
- 45:24Speaker 1: looking to cash in. Did we do that? Hard Rock
- 45:27Speaker 1: Bet will let us know next on Hunting With Row.
- 45:30Speaker 1: It's Hunting With Row, presented by Hard Rock Bet. You
- 45:34Speaker 1: bet $ 5, get $ 100 in bonus bets. Ends October 4th.
- 45:38Speaker 1: You go to hardrock.bet.com. That's hardrock.bet.com. roll with us. Chad,
- 45:46Speaker 1: if our viewers rolled with us at Hard Rock Bet
- 45:49Speaker 1: in their app, what'd you make this weekend? So let's
- 45:53Speaker 1: go with our blood bank guarantees, our Hard Rock locks
- 45:57Speaker 1: last week. Didn't work out with Georgia Tech and Colorado.
- 46:00Speaker 2: We know that. Hutton, now you came back with a
- 46:03Speaker 2: Friday play that did work out.
- 46:04Speaker 3: Miami.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Miami boat raced. Stanford. So we won that bet, right?
- 46:10Speaker 1: Yes, we did. We cashed in on that. And I
- 46:12Speaker 1: followed you on South Dakota State. And you're right. For
- 46:16Speaker 1: a moment, I was hopeful. I just took the money
- 46:17Speaker 1: line there. And I thought, man, he's going to nail this.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Jack rounds, but we didn't get it. You have silly underdogs.
- 46:24Speaker 1: We have had wrong team favor in the past. I
- 46:27Speaker 1: think together, collectively, Hutton, each week, we need to come
- 46:30Speaker 1: up with the team that's the underdog that's going to
- 46:32Speaker 1: win outright.
- 46:32Speaker 2: That was our one this week. Our attempt with South
- 46:35Speaker 2: Dakota State did not work out, but we'll come up
- 46:38Speaker 2: with one of those a week. I will say personally,
- 46:41Speaker 2: I did really well on Saturday because I had a
- 46:44Speaker 2: morning and a late night play that worked out. I
- 46:48Speaker 2: had Alabama minus whatever they were against East Carolina. They
- 46:52Speaker 2: won easily and they covered easily. I had Nebraska backdoor
- 46:56Speaker 2: their way into covering easily. against Ohio very late in
- 46:59Speaker 2: that game. That was my 11 a.m. Central time parlay.
- 47:03Speaker 2: And then late at night, Hutton, I had our guy
- 47:05Speaker 2: Dan Mullen and UNLV at Hawaii. He covered pretty easily.
- 47:10Speaker 2: And covering very easily was Nico and UCLA in the
- 47:15Speaker 2: 9.30 start time game. So I had both those games late.
- 47:18Speaker 2: So it was a good, as we went back and
- 47:20Speaker 2: look what we made with Hard Rock Bet, pretty profitable
- 47:23Speaker 2: Saturday for me.
- 47:24Speaker 1: So I won.
- 47:26Speaker 1: The cover for, let's see, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. That
- 47:30Speaker 1: was my big cash-in over the weekend. The backdoor cover
- 47:34Speaker 1: by Furman really flipped me. Tennessee's just rolling in that game.
- 47:40Speaker 1: And then you've got the touchdown late or whatever and
- 47:43Speaker 1: made it nine. Or the field goals. But my point is.
- 47:46Speaker 2: It was two fumbles. Furman would have been shut out.
- 47:49Speaker 2: Tennessee fumbled twice around the 25-yard line. And those were
- 47:53Speaker 2: the nine points that Furman scored was off two fumbles.
- 47:56Speaker 1: And Oklahoma State did not come through. Everything they changed over.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Tulsa takes them down, what, 24-10. They did not help me.
- 48:05Speaker 1: I made like $ 35 over the weekend on $ 5 bets.
- 48:09Speaker 2: If we're looking at a list of the miserable... In
- 48:12Speaker 2: college football today?
- 48:13Speaker 1: Yes.
- 48:15Speaker 2: We'll do this tomorrow. In fact, you know what? I'm
- 48:17Speaker 2: going to give a top five. Feeling most miserable about
- 48:20Speaker 2: your program after one week, Clemson's up there if you're
- 48:24Speaker 2: a Clemson fan because it's also you're just on your
- 48:26Speaker 2: hands there. We're probably not going to fire Dabo, but
- 48:29Speaker 2: is he really going to rally at this point? And
- 48:31Speaker 2: how bad is this season going to be exactly? I
- 48:34Speaker 2: think Oklahoma State has to be top of the list.
- 48:37Speaker 2: That was a program that was very good under Mike
- 48:39Speaker 2: Gundy for a long time. Hutton, I said it on Friday,
- 48:41Speaker 2: they've not won an FBS game since September of 24.
- 48:44Speaker 2: That's crazy. In two years.
- 48:46Speaker 1: That is crazy.
- 48:47Speaker 2: You get all the excitement of Eric Morris is your coach.
- 48:50Speaker 2: He brings Drew Mestemaker as quarterback. Oh, we're going to
- 48:52Speaker 2: score points again. This is going to be fun. And
- 48:54Speaker 2: you come out in week one as a double-digit favorite,
- 48:57Speaker 2: and you get beaten easily on the road by Tulsa.
- 49:01Speaker 2: And shout out to Trey Lamb, a friend of the show, who,
- 49:04Speaker 2: in fact, I'll text and we'll get on this week
- 49:07Speaker 2: to talk about how they beat Oklahoma State. But big
- 49:09Speaker 2: win for him in Tulsa. But man, you got to
- 49:11Speaker 2: feel real bad if you're Oklahoma State.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Now, I have a six-leg parlay that is one win
- 49:16Speaker 1: away from cashing because I just took these teams to
- 49:18Speaker 1: win outright. Michigan LSU, Washington, Notre Dame, Ole Miss. All
- 49:23Speaker 1: of those were some nail biters there. I need SMU
- 49:27Speaker 1: just to win outright. And tonight, I also just laid
- 49:31Speaker 1: the points. Minus two and a half against Florida State.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Road team favored here. Ranked team favored. I just... I mean,
- 49:39Speaker 1: how could I have any confidence in the Seminoles, even
- 49:42Speaker 1: though SMU is, you know, they're battling in the ACC,
- 49:47Speaker 1: but I don't think they're anywhere close to being close
- 49:50Speaker 1: to Miami or maybe even Louisville at this point. I
- 49:53Speaker 1: just don't trust Florida State at all. Yeah, I think
- 49:57Speaker 1: SMU wins tonight.
- 49:59Speaker 2: I'm hesitant, though, because Florida State, who was terrible a
- 50:02Speaker 2: year ago, they were good in week one. right, against Alabama.
- 50:07Speaker 2: So do they get that initial burst to start the season?
- 50:12Speaker 2: I don't know. But you said a six-way parlay could
- 50:16Speaker 2: hit tonight with SMU. That's not bad at all. If
- 50:20Speaker 2: I'm betting with Hard Rock Bet, and I will, I'm
- 50:23Speaker 2: riding with you, Hunt. I'm going SMU minus the two
- 50:26Speaker 2: and a half tonight against Florida State. And this is
- 50:27Speaker 2: one of the most popular parlays that they offered, you know,
- 50:30Speaker 2: at the top of the screen or whatever.
- 50:31Speaker 1: I just saw it. All these programs to win. Honestly,
- 50:35Speaker 1: I shouldn't have been able to catch this tonight because
- 50:37Speaker 1: of the way Michigan played. I thought I was done.
- 50:40Speaker 1: And Washington, they end up winning the Apple Cup, but
- 50:44Speaker 1: that was a sloppy game for them. Ole Miss came through,
- 50:48Speaker 1: so does Notre Dame, but I need SMU. If you're me,
- 50:52Speaker 1: do you cash out early tonight if they get up by,
- 50:54Speaker 1: I don't know, seven or ten points?
- 50:56Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 50:57Speaker 1: I probably will.
- 50:59Speaker 2: I would take the scared approach and absolutely cash out
- 51:02Speaker 2: if they ever got a lead in that game. Hey,
- 51:05Speaker 2: Washington and Washington State yesterday, everything looked so difficult for
- 51:09Speaker 2: DeMond Williams in Washington. Yes. And I cannot help but
- 51:12Speaker 2: to go back to that whole legal dust-up with Washington
- 51:16Speaker 2: and him when he was trying to transfer, and he
- 51:18Speaker 2: was basically sued into coming back because of what it
- 51:22Speaker 2: was going to cost if you added him as a transfer.
- 51:24Speaker 2: And I'm like– He looks like a guy who doesn't
- 51:27Speaker 2: want to be there at times in that game. And
- 51:30Speaker 2: Jed Fish seemed very on edge for a guy who's
- 51:33Speaker 2: usually happy-go-lucky throughout that game, just not understanding why his
- 51:36Speaker 2: team couldn't do anything. I just thought everything looked– against
- 51:39Speaker 2: Washington State, who's not very good, I thought everything looked
- 51:42Speaker 2: extremely difficult offensively for Washington that game. I thought the
- 51:46Speaker 2: defense looked pretty good for Washington.
- 51:49Speaker 1: Very good.
- 51:50Speaker 2: They had a couple of turnovers. Offensively, very underwhelmed in
- 51:53Speaker 2: that game. Speaking of underwhelmed, Bryce Underwood– Michigan has been
- 51:57Speaker 2: underwhelming so far. A little glimpse at our economy and
- 52:02Speaker 2: how it's changed. I've got a graph here that shows
- 52:04Speaker 2: you what $ 15 million bought you in 1803. It bought
- 52:08Speaker 2: you the Louisiana Purchase from France, which at the time was,
- 52:11Speaker 2: I think, a third of the country. And now $ 15
- 52:14Speaker 2: million is a contract for Bryce Underwood, and it gets
- 52:17Speaker 2: you 170 yards of touchdown and interception in and a
- 52:20Speaker 2: QBR 54.1. Man, we could make money stretch back in
- 52:23Speaker 2: the day, couldn't we? But how our country has evolved
- 52:27Speaker 2: since 1803. The Louisiana Purchase, Bryce Underwood.
- 52:33Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 52:34Speaker 2: The other great, just the social media shout-outs of the week,
- 52:38Speaker 2: and I saw Clay repost this too, but the guy
- 52:40Speaker 2: who said, remarkable stat here. College football teams were like,
- 52:45Speaker 2: 600 and something thousand and zero since 1896, having led
- 52:51Speaker 2: when the clock hit zero after the final play of
- 52:53Speaker 2: the game until Michigan's win.
- 52:56Speaker 1: Prior to Western Michigan, college football teams were 110,352 and 0.
- 53:00Speaker 2: Since 1869. 69, yeah.
- 53:00Speaker 1: It's amazing. The whole storylines in college football, I want
- 53:16Speaker 1: your take on the Braves. There's some good parlays and
- 53:22Speaker 1: featured offers right now for MLB. How are they playing,
- 53:27Speaker 1: and which way would you lean?
- 53:29Speaker 2: We were calling a high school football game Friday night,
- 53:31Speaker 2: and I glanced down and said, oh, the Braves won.
- 53:33Speaker 2: I said, that's huge because going into the series, I
- 53:36Speaker 2: think the Braves were ahead by three or four games.
- 53:38Speaker 2: I think three because if the Phillies swept, they'd be
- 53:41Speaker 2: in first. by the end of the weekend, which would
- 53:43Speaker 2: have been crazy. But if they could just split, that
- 53:46Speaker 2: would have been a huge win for the Braves, given
- 53:48Speaker 2: the distance in the division right now. They've already at
- 53:51Speaker 2: least done that. They've won the first two or three
- 53:53Speaker 2: in this series. They play again today here on Labor
- 53:56Speaker 2: Day against the Phillies. They do that. They're in a
- 53:59Speaker 2: really good spot. They're going to play the Phillies again.
- 54:02Speaker 2: So the division is by no means wrapped up or
- 54:04Speaker 2: anything like that. But a great start to September if
- 54:07Speaker 2: they're able to win today. Ronald Acuna Jr. loves playing
- 54:12Speaker 2: in moments like this.
- 54:13Speaker 1: He does.
- 54:14Speaker 2: He came out and gave the curtain call after the
- 54:15Speaker 2: three-run homer that tied it in Philly because of all
- 54:18Speaker 2: the boo birds from Philly fans yesterday, which I absolutely loved.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Braves are playing well. Phillies are playing really well, too,
- 54:25Speaker 2: going into this series, Hutton. Look, if I'm just taking ceilings,
- 54:30Speaker 2: I think the Phillies and the Brewers and the Dodgers–
- 54:33Speaker 2: have a higher ceiling than the Braves. But the Braves,
- 54:36Speaker 2: even though they made no big-time additions to the trade deadline,
- 54:38Speaker 2: Tyler Malley, who pitched yesterday, was one of them, was
- 54:42Speaker 2: probably the biggest one. But they've played well since that moment,
- 54:47Speaker 2: even though they didn't make any huge additions.
- 54:50Speaker 1: I mean, right now, to outright win, Atlanta plus 145.
- 54:52Speaker 1: So I'm going to take the Braves to win today.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Tonight's going to be fun as well. We've got SMU,
- 54:57Speaker 1: Florida State, and we have the Hunting Withrow Fantasy Football
- 55:00Speaker 1: League draft. We do it right. We do it right
- 55:03Speaker 1: before week one. All the injuries are out there. We
- 55:06Speaker 1: know the rosters. There's no roster adjustments right now. We
- 55:09Speaker 1: do it right. Can't wait, man. It's going to be blasting.
- 55:12Speaker 1: We have some familiar faces, some day one season ticket holders,
- 55:15Speaker 1: and some new additions as well. It'll be a lot
- 55:17Speaker 1: of fun. So I'm thrilled to be able to jump
- 55:20Speaker 1: in and do this again.
- 55:22Speaker 2: Yes, thank you for being the commissioner of this league, Hutton.
- 55:24Speaker 2: I'm excited for 7 o'clock Central time tonight for the
- 55:27Speaker 2: draft and looking forward to banging some hats throughout the year.
- 55:30Speaker 2: I hope there's a lot of trash talk tonight in
- 55:32Speaker 2: our chat room during the draft also. So really looking
- 55:35Speaker 2: forward to that.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Hard Rock Bet, sign up, get all the details, hardrock.bet.com.
- 55:41Speaker 1: That is hardrock.bet.com. Go get after the smoker.
- 55:46Speaker 2: Oh, it's heating up right now. I'm getting that bad
- 55:50Speaker 2: boy up to 250 as we speak. Low and slow, baby.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 55:53Speaker 1: Enjoy the rest of the shows coming up your way
