Transcript
- 0:00The Pittsburgh Pirates faced the New York Mets for a Monday night game at Shea Stadium on June 26, 1967.
- 0:08The Pirates were an above average team, coming off back-to-back 90-win seasons in 1965 and 66, led by manager Harry Walker.
- 0:17The Mets, on the other hand, were still terrible, although their 66-95 record in 1966 was the first time in team history that they did lose more than 109 games.
- 0:29This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Bob Murphy, Ralph Keiner, and Lindsay Nelson.
- 0:59A shot put by Matty Alou, and he's on for a base hit.
- 1:07Now Bob Shaw is completely unprepared for that.
- 1:12A shocking start is Matty Alou. What a magician he is at handling that bat.
- 1:18Pencessional bunter. He bunted that ball so beautifully, Shaw never got off the mound.
- 1:23Trainball went for the ball. First base was wide open. They had no chance to get him.
- 1:27A bunting single by Matty Alou, and it brings up Mari Wills.
- 1:42Wills hitting 295. Now Shaw checks the runner at first. Here's the pitch on the way, and it's a called strike on the inside corner.
- 1:50Wills has been handicapped to play. He has missed a number of ball games due to an injured knee.
- 2:00Mari Swisher. Leon Jones, the left-center fielder, playing Wills to hit the ball to the opposite field. He plays him in rather shallow left-center field.
- 2:10Now the pitch by Shaw. Now it's toward the middle. Hustling for it is Buchak. He can't make a play.
- 2:15He backhands toward his glove and knocks it down, and everybody is safe. That's an infield hit for Mari Wills.
- 2:22Buchak had a very difficult chance. He had to reach across the body and try and make a backhand pick up on that short hop near second base.
- 2:30Had he been able to come up with the ball, he would have had a play made easily in second base. It was a very tough hop, and it is a base hit for Wills.
- 2:38So now on a one-single and an infield hit, the Pirates have two on, nobody out, and Roberto Clemente coming up.
- 2:48Clemente leading the National League in batting. Roberto is hitting.350.
- 2:52Twelve home runs and 49 runs batted in. And the curve outside, ball one.
- 3:02Almost before the crowd can get settled into their seats, the Pirates have a threat.
- 3:08Manny Jimenez, the left fielder, batting clean up, waiting on deck.
- 3:13Now the pitcher Clemente, bounced toward the middle, moving forward is Haraldson. He steps on second, he throws to first, in time, double play.
- 3:30Roberto Clemente hitting into a double play, engineered by Bud Haraldson.
- 3:37Now the hitter is Jimenez, the left fielder.
- 3:42He has recently been recalled from Columbus of the International League, where he was hitting.338 with seven home runs.
- 3:49Willie Stardill, the Pirates' regular left fielder, and the Pirates' ace left hand pitcher Bob Beale, both flew back to Pittsburgh this evening.
- 3:59Beale's elbow has been bothering him. Stardill has a bad shoulder right now.
- 4:04Both are expected to rejoin the Pirates in Chicago on Wednesday. It is taken high, one ball and no strikes.
- 4:13Jimenez, three for nine, is joining the Pirate Ball Club, batting.333.
- 4:19To make room for Jimenez, outfielder George Briggs was sent to Columbus.
- 4:25Now Bob Shaw, out of his windup, here's the pitch on the way, off the outside corner, two balls and no strikes.
- 4:35Matty Allou is on third, two men down, we're in the top half of the opening inning.
- 4:41Johnny Pesky on the coaching lines at first, Al Gramis coaching at third.
- 4:45Now the pitch, fastball, a strike in the inside corner, it's two and one.
- 4:51Boy, what a beautiful night for a ballgame.
- 4:54An afternoon game tomorrow at two o'clock, and a lot going on before the game tomorrow.
- 5:01Pitching two and one, he is hit by the pitch. That one got away from Shaw and got Jimenez on the right leg.
- 5:13Now runners on first and third, two men down, the hitter is Don Glenn Dunham, the first baseman.
- 5:27Don Glenn Dunham batting.246.
- 5:37Glenn Dunham, 6 home runs,.25 runs batted in. Ball, rangey right hand batter, a swing and a missed strike one.
- 5:46Big Don hit.299 last year.
- 5:52Well, Mr. Leo DeRosier, Chicago Cubs, won again today. They now have won seven straight.
- 6:02At the moment, the Cubs are only three and a half out of first place.
- 6:06Swing and a missed on a slider in the count strike two.
- 6:13Runners at first and third, two men out.
- 6:19Dennis Bennett, newest member of the Nuts Pitching staff, is on hand and will work tomorrow.
- 6:25Just a little bit high, Shaw thought he had him struck out, one ball, two strikes.
- 6:30Paul Steiner is umpiring behind home plate, Al Barley gets first, Augie Donatelli is second and Stan Landis is third.
- 6:38The Mets have Jack Lemabe warming up in the bullpen.
- 6:42Now the pitch on the way, breaking ball just off the outside corner.
- 6:46Those last two pitches, just missing. Jerry Grody turns around to talk to Steiner about that one.
- 6:59It's two and two on Don Glenn Dunham.
- 7:01Mattie Allou is on third and Manny Jimenez on first.
- 7:08Now Shaw looking in to get his sign from battery mate Jerry Grody.
- 7:12The infield has dragged to left. Now the pitch on the way and the curve is popped up.
- 7:17On the right side of the diamond, Ed Cranepool in toward the mound is under it and Eddie has it beside his eye.
- 7:24Bob Shaw pitching out of a jam in the opening inning.
- 7:27No runs, two hits, no errors, two left on.
- 7:30And the score in the middle of the first, the Pirates snubbing, the New York Mets coming to bat.
- 7:35Now here's a word from Rango.
- 7:42March 1967, New York City under the pounding of a North Atlantic storm.
- 7:54A
- 7:58The
- 8:03Harbor
- 8:04comes aboard to give the little lady a hand.
- 8:06What a slow hand, buddy.
- 8:08The most dangerous time is to bring these ships into the harbor.
- 8:11You see the pilot, the captain of the ship doesn't do this, but this is the pilot's job.
- 8:16It's the pilot's job. It's not easy.
- 8:19Sometimes the view from the bridge can be pretty bleak.
- 8:22If you're going to take charge in New York, you've got to be good.
- 8:26There are 302 beers trying to make it in New York City,
- 8:30but the only one that's made it to the top is the rich dry lager Ringo.
- 8:35Ringo, in this town either you have it or you don't.
- 8:47Pitching for the Pirates tonight, right-hander Steve Blass.
- 8:51Steve is from Lakeville, Connecticut.
- 8:5425 year old right-hander
- 8:58stands 6'1", weighs 165.
- 9:02Last year with Pittsburgh Blass 111 and lost 7.
- 9:06This year he has won 2 and lost 2.
- 9:09He has a lifetime record against the New York Mets of no wins and one loss.
- 9:16Bud Harrelson batting left-handed leading off against Blass.
- 9:20The young right-hander from Connecticut fires a fastball, though it's ball one.
- 9:26Pittsburgh has Don Glenn Dunn in playing first, Bill Masurowski in second,
- 9:30Gene Alley is in short, and Mari Wills in close against Bud Harrelson at third.
- 9:37Now Harrelson, blessed a bunt, doesn't offer, and the pitcher's low ball to it's 2-0.
- 9:42In the far right outfield, Manny Jimenez in left.
- 9:46The center fielder is Matty Allou and around it right field, Roberto Clemente.
- 9:50Jerry May behind the plate handling Steve Blass.
- 9:54Waiting on deck for New York, Cleon Jones.
- 9:57Pitching 2-0, fastball in, a call strike gets 2-1.
- 10:01Joe Brown, the general manager of the Pittsburgh club, watching the ball game this evening here at Shea from his field box.
- 10:10Right now he's talking baseball with his scout supervisor for the New England area, Bobby Whalen.
- 10:17Inside and low, 2-3 and 1.
- 10:19Bobby Whalen signed Steve Blass to his first pro baseball contract.
- 10:24So he is more than just lightly interested in the progress of Steve Blass.
- 10:343-1 delivery, it is over for a strike 3-2.
- 10:453-2 on the leadoff batter Bud Harrelson.
- 10:50Bud hitting 2-41, stands up toward the front of the batter's box, chokes up on the handle of the bat, and the pitch to him, a ground ball and a shortstop.
- 10:59Gene Alley bobbles the ball and Harrelson is on.
- 11:11Bud Harrelson reaches on the air, chars to the shortstop, Gene Alley, and it brings up Cleon Jones.
- 11:35Cleon was wielding a big bat in the series against the Atlanta Braves over the weekend.
- 11:42Over the last five ball games, Cleon has done well.
- 11:45He's at 3-81, breaking ball outside and lowest ball one.
- 11:49In his last five games, Cleon has gone 8 for 21, raising his average from 177 to 202.
- 12:04Tomorrow, a battle of left-handers, Woody Freiman, pitching against Dennis Bennett.
- 12:09Here's the pitch on the way. The runner goes, a swing in the middle, it's the peg, the second to slide, out.
- 12:14Harrelson on a hip-first slide, it's fagged out by Gene Alley.
- 12:21Strong throw by catcher Jerry May, it covered the ground in a hurry.
- 12:42One ball, one strike on Cleon, blast the right-hander, winds and pitches, and a high pop-up into short right field,
- 12:49calling for it is Mazurasky. And on the rim of the outfield grass, Maz makes the catch.
- 12:56By the way, the filming for the movie, Ad Couple, which will take place here at Chase Video tomorrow,
- 13:02will run from 1-30 until 1-55. The ball game between the Mets and Parrots starts at 2 p.m.
- 13:09The Mets will be on the field for the triple play, hit and two by Roberto Clemente,
- 13:13with Mario Wills, Vern Law, and Mattie Allou on the bases.
- 13:17The crew and equipment will begin to assemble at shale about 11 tomorrow morning.
- 13:24Now the pitch, low and outside, one ball and no strikes. Ken Boyer hitting, Ken batting 2-22.
- 13:39Slow grounder, foul down the first-base line.
- 13:44Philadelphia Phillies applied the breaks to the Cardinals yesterday, sweeping 2 from St. Louis.
- 13:51Reds lost the single game to Pittsburgh 5-4. So the Reds in second place are now 2-1 half games back.
- 13:58The Cubs won their afternoon game. At the moment, they're just 3-1 half games out of first.
- 14:03And the Parrots, 6 games back. Foul ball, it's slowly over toward the dugout, no play.
- 14:20In the afternoon game at Wrigley Field, the Cubs beat the Phillies, 4-2, and the Cubs now have won 7 straight.
- 14:26The winning pitcher was left-hander Rich Nye.
- 14:29Cal Kuntz came on in the 6th inning and Johnny Hartnestein in the 9th.
- 14:33The loser was Turk Farrell, who was given a start by manager Gene Marks.
- 14:37And Billy Williams and Ron Santo both hit home runs.
- 14:40Look out, foul ball back into the TV booth, no play.
- 14:54That one came pretty close to Lindsey's ear.
- 14:58The 1-2 delivery and the fastball is over, strike three call.
- 15:03The Mets are out of their half of the first inning.
- 15:06No runs, no hits, one error, and none left on.
- 15:09And at the end of one inning, the score, the Parrots nothing, and the New York Mets nothing.
- 15:14Ralph?
- 15:15I don't forget that special night, July 20th.
- 15:18That Thursday night, the Mets playing against the Houston Astros, and it will be hell of a night here at Chase Stadium.
- 15:24Every boy and girl 16 years of age or under will receive a replica of the Mets batting helmet as he or she enters the ballpark.
- 15:33Once again, that day, Thursday night, July 20th, helmet night.
- 15:39I'd like to remind you that bus service from Brooklyn and Staten Island is available for fans living in Brooklyn and Staten Island.

- 16:05Express bus service from Brooklyn and Staten Island and back from Chase Stadium.
- 16:11Now we're going to the top of the second, once again, Bob Murphy.
- 16:15All right, Ralph, Bill Mazurowski will be up against Bob Shaw.
- 16:19The Dodgers are playing at Cincinnati tonight.
- 16:21Flauto has seen nine and seven, pitching against Mel Queen.
- 16:24Mel has won eight and lost two.
- 16:26The Giants open a big series tonight at St. Louis.
- 16:30Here's the pitcher on the way.
- 16:32Curveball is over.
- 16:33Strike one call.
- 16:38In the American League, the Yankees play tonight at Kansas City.
- 16:40It'll be Fred Talbot against Paul Lindblad.
- 16:43The White Sox play at Baltimore. Bruce Howard for the White Sox and Pete Rickards for the Orioles.
- 16:49Swing and a miss on the slider in the count strike two.
- 16:52The Red Sox are playing at Minnesota and the Senators will be on the west coast playing the Angels at Anaheim.
- 16:58The All-Star game will be played in Anaheim this year on the 11th of July, the home of the California Angels.
- 17:10Two-strike delivery off the outside corner, ball left.
- 17:23Bill Mazurowski batting at 283.
- 17:29Now the windup by Shaw. Here's the pitch off the outside corner, two and two.
- 17:35I would imagine that when the votes have been calculated for the All-Star team, Bill Mazurowski might very well be the All-Star second baseman again.
- 17:49The 2-2 delivery, a slow grounder going foul down the third baseline.
- 17:56Ron Hunt will draw considerable attention. Ron's batting average is up over 300.
- 18:01He's been playing day in and day out for the Dodgers.
- 18:12Now the windup by Shaw, the 2-2 pitch, swung on and a miss. He struck him out.
- 18:17Shaw fans Mazurowski. That brings up the shortstop, Gene Alley.
- 18:24Alley, like Mazurowski, I'm sure garnered a number of votes in the balloting for the All-Star game.
- 18:32Alley hitting 279 has four home runs and 24 runs batted in.
- 18:37He hit a surprising 299 last year. They play on the step to left in the outfield, the pitch on the way. He tries to bunt, but misses strike one.
- 18:50In the season series, the New York Mets lead the Pittsburgh Pirates four games to two.
- 18:57One of the most exciting nights of the year, the Mets swept Pittsburgh a doubleheader at Corbsfield.
- 19:04Swing and a miss, and the count is strike two.
- 19:23Now Shaw with a two-strike count. Here's the pitch on the way. Over his head, he has to duck under it.
- 19:37On the 6th of June, the Mets swept a Twilight Knight doubleheader at Corbsfield, winning the first game 1-0.
- 19:45Tom Seaver, Ron Taylor, and Don Shaw combined for the shutout.
- 19:55The Mets won the night cap 3-2. Jack Hamilton was the winner in relief, and Elroy Fates was the loser in both games of that doubleheader.
- 20:04Dick Salma had pitched the first six. Bill Dunahee won them, and Hamilton the last three.
- 20:09The ball hit down to third. It comes up on a big hop for Boyer. The throw to Crane Boiler's end time, retiring Gene Alex.
- 20:16That one started out as a grass cutter, and hit a little pebble or something out there, and popped conveniently right up in the middle of Kenny Boyer.
- 20:31The batter is Jerry May. May hitting 3-13. He has won the number one backstopping job from the veteran Jim Valeroni, and he takes a fastball on the inside corner for a called strike.
- 20:44Parrots carrying just two catchers. They send Jesse Gander to Columbus on the acquired Al Luplo from the New York Mets.
- 20:57Now Shaw swings out of his windup, the pitch to May. A slow breaking ball just off the outside corner. One ball, one strike.
- 21:06Bob Shaw has a lifetime record against Pittsburgh of six wins and eight losses.
- 21:21Out of the windup by Shaw and the pitch, fastball brushes him away from the plate. Two balls and one strike to Jerry May, the number eight hitter and the batting winner.
- 21:30A day game tomorrow starting at two o'clock, and Dennis Bennett will start his first ball game for New York. His opponent will be Southfall Woody Freiman.
- 21:39Plan to come early and enjoy all the filming for the sequences for our couple of smash through the hole, a base hit to left field. Just beyond the reach of Ken Boyer.
- 21:54Third hit for the Parrots. It brings up the pitcher, Steve Black. Steve has been up just 11 times this year, owns one base hit.
- 22:08The Mets are home now until the All-Star break. The last day of a three-day break for the All-Star. The Nuts have their benefit game of the Yankees, the Mayor of San Juan benefit game at Yankee Stadium this year.
- 22:23And the pitch is over on the outside corner, strike one.
- 22:30Pittsburgh tonight and tomorrow, the Phillies are here Wednesday night and Thursday night. And the Cardinals for the weekend, Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and a doubleheader Sunday.
- 22:39Swing and a miss on a breaking ball, strike two.
- 22:57Now the two-strike pitch by Shaw. Swing and a miss. He struck him out. He got him to go for a curve the way out of the strike zone.
- 23:03No runs, one hit, no errors, and one left. And at the end of an inning and a half, the Mets nothing and the Pirates nothing.
- 23:24Now the last of the second inning and Tommy Davis will be leading off for the New York Mets.
- 23:29Tommy hitting 3-0-9 with 10 home runs and 35 runs batted in.
- 23:45Steve Blasswines and the fifth to Tommy fouled back toward the crowd, no play.
- 24:04Now Blass, not again on his target, delivers. Foul ball and back up into the crowd.
- 24:09And a counterstrike, too. Blass has not been used a great deal this year by Harry Walker.
- 24:18Steve has started.
- 24:24Only two other games this year. Otherwise, it's been used in relief.
- 24:36That is one-two, lost two.
- 24:40From Lakeville, Connecticut, 25-year-old Rat Hander.
- 24:44He pitched more frequently last year and won 11, lost seven. Pretty good year.
- 25:04Now the pitch to Tommy Davis is inside and high. One ball and two strikes.
- 25:16Eddie Crane, who will be hitting next, and then Rounds will vote him.
- 25:23The one-two delivery. Fly ball, well hit the right field.
- 25:26The money walking back to the edge of the warning track is there, and he makes the catch, retiring Tommy Davis.
- 25:36Run away.
- 25:42Eddie Crane, who will brought his average back over 300, now hitting 3-0-7.
- 25:55Eddie had one for three in the loss yesterday afternoon to the Atlanta Braves.
- 26:00A smash hit hard in the left center fielder for a base hit.
- 26:04Mattie Allou, the center fielder, picks it up, plays it back in, and Crane, who reaches with a base hit.
- 26:10He drilled that one just beyond the reach of shortstop Gene Alex.
- 26:18So the next half, they're first two of the game, and it brings up Ron Swabota.
- 26:26Eddie Crane, Bull, and Ron Swabota are roommates on the road, inseparable friends.
- 26:33And on this ballgame, they're hitting one behind the other in the batting order.
- 26:37Salty Parker calling Ron down between third and home for a powwow.
- 26:44Salty coaching at third, Yogi Berra coaching at first.
- 26:50We have a real good Monday night crowd here at Shea, and a beautiful, absolutely perfect night for a ballgame.
- 27:00Don Clinton holding against the baserunner at Crane Pool.
- 27:05Now blast off the stretch delivers a fastball on the outside corner, strike one.
- 27:16The Phillies are here Wednesday night and Thursday night, and the Cardinals Friday night.
- 27:20The Cardinal outfield batting over 300.
- 27:24Lou Brock, Kirk Flood, Roger Marrows.
- 27:31Now the Pits are underway, and it's under the knees, one ball and one strike.
- 27:35In addition, Tim McCarver is having a big year behind the plate, and Orlando's played a strong year at first.
- 27:42Julian Javier at second is hitting much better than anybody thought he would.
- 27:47Javier is still over 300.
- 27:50Cardinals have a team batting average of over 270.
- 27:52Ground ball bounced to second base.
- 27:54Mathorovsky to Alley, they have one.
- 27:56Now back to first, not in time.
- 27:58And it's the throw from Gene Alex.
- 28:06Two outs and one on, it brings up Jerry Buchak.
- 28:12Jerry hitting at 230, and right here we pause for station identification.
- 28:16This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 28:19Hi, neighbor.
- 28:20Wake up with the Chanuclare at 5.45 a.m.

- 28:47This afternoon at Wrigley Field, Chicago defeated Philadelphia, 4-2.
- 28:51Billy Williams and Ron Santo both hit home runs, number 13 for each man.
- 28:57Those Cubs are putting it all together right now.
- 29:00Much better pitching than any one jump they had.
- 29:04A lot of hitting and good defensive play.
- 29:10Here's the pitch to Buchak.
- 29:12Inside, off the fist, one ball, one strike.
- 29:15The amazing thing so far has been the Chicago pitching.
- 29:18They're getting outstanding pitching from rookies.
- 29:22New names like Johnny Hartenstein, Rich Nye, Joe Neekro.
- 29:29Swing and a miss, one ball and two strikes.
- 29:33Everybody thought the bottom would drop out on Chicago when Kenny Holtsman went into the Army after winning five games without a loss.
- 29:46Ferguson Jenkins, the ace of the Cubs staff, has already won nine ball games.
- 29:53Here's the 1-2 delivery, and the breaking ball is inside.
- 29:57The count is 2-2.
- 30:07Don Clementon holding against the baserunner, Ryan Swabota.

- 31:42the wonderful Dixieland music by the group from your father's mustache.
- 31:47Here's a fellow that doesn't wear a mustache.
- 31:49All ready to go, Mr. Ralph Keiner.
- 31:52Thank you, Bob Murphy, and hi everyone.
- 31:55First man up for the Pittsburgh Pirates will be Mattie Allou.
- 32:04Mattie beat out a bun his first time up in the very first pitch of the ballgame by Bob Shaw.
- 32:08Now Bob is moving Eddie Cranepole in closer to home plate, about even with the bag, and also over toward second base.
- 32:15Mattie Allou, a left hand batter.
- 32:17He has good speed, good speed, and he's got a lot of speed.
- 32:20Mattie is inside at ball one.
- 32:25Mattie is batting 3.30.
- 32:31Ken Boyer at third base, also playing in very close.
- 32:34Pitch back to the plate, it's one on line to center field.
- 32:37It's going to be a base it might go through.
- 32:39Cut off by Cleon Jones.
- 32:40Allou with a big turn at first base and now stopping.

- 1:06:55Blast so far has allowed just three hits.
- 1:06:58Eddie Cranesville has two of the three both singles.
- 1:07:02But Harrelson has the other a single to right in the third inning.
- 1:07:06The Mets have had two well hit drives that have been caught.
- 1:07:11One by Tommy Davis the other by Jerry Grote.
- 1:07:14And the breaking ball is outside one ball and two strikes.
- 1:07:30One and two as Shaw waits on Steve Blass.
- 1:07:37The Lakeville Connecticut right hander delivers a bouncing ball hit toward the middle.
- 1:07:41Grabbed by Maserowski. Flips Valley for one on the clandestine double play.
- 1:07:46Four six three double play on the side is out in the last of the fifth inning.
- 1:07:51No runs no hits no errors none left on.

- 1:08:55Bob Miller and Craig Anderson will be on hand and Slim Roger Craig who had so many heartbreaking losses.
- 1:09:01Richie Ashburn hit over 300 that first year.

- 1:09:12Hot Rod Kaniel and Roadblock Jones, Charlie Neal.
- 1:09:15The Yankees will have such as old reliable Tommy Henry.

- 1:09:58Wills has an infield hit and has rounded out second to first one for two.
- 1:10:03Barry hitting two and ninety seven.
- 1:10:09His knee has been bothering him quite a bit lately.
- 1:10:12He was hit on that knee by a pitch thrown by Ray Sedecky.
- 1:10:20Shaw out of his wind up the pitch to Wills.
- 1:10:23Fast ball a strike on the inside corner of the pitch.
- 1:10:26Wills sitting close to the plate jumped back thinking he was going to be more inside.
- 1:10:31Roberto Clemente coming out on deck.
- 1:10:51Now the pitch on the way.
- 1:10:53Breaking ball in the dirt in front of the plate.
- 1:10:55One ball two strikes to Maury Wills.
- 1:11:08Now Shaw checking with Jerry Grody.
- 1:11:11The Dodgers got two runs off Mel Queen in the third.
- 1:11:14Dodgers to Cincinnati nothing at the end of three and a half of his team against Queen.
- 1:11:19And it's hit in the air to shallow left center field drifting over is Leon Jones.
- 1:11:23And Leon puts it away for the.
- 1:11:29Now Roberto Clemente.

- 1:11:53Harry Walker.
- 1:11:56Come out to argue a point with Empire now.
- 1:12:00I don't know what the point is.
- 1:12:10Up to this point and it's not really an argument.
- 1:12:13It is merely an explanation on the part of Mel Sanders regards to whatever Harry Walker is saying.
- 1:12:27Harry Walker is.
- 1:12:33And are trying to walk away from him.
- 1:12:35Harry Walker stays right with it.
- 1:12:49Now the argument starts to break up and Harry Walker hits back to the dugout.
- 1:12:58I don't know whether Harry was contending catchers interference and Jerry Grutter or what he was arguing about.
- 1:13:05Fastball for a strike to Clemente.
- 1:13:09He was not arguing obviously about the call on a pitch because that would mean banishment from the ballgame.
- 1:13:18The Giants scoreless in the first inning at St. Louis.
- 1:13:23Now breaking ball over strike two.
- 1:13:26John Kastman is pitching the bat for the Cardinals.
- 1:13:28He was with the Cardinals during spring training was sent back to the minor leagues on the cut down date and brought back up with Ray Washburn suffering a fractured thumb.
- 1:13:36Washburn is now on the disabled list.
- 1:13:40His strike delivery off the outside corner one ball and two strikes.
- 1:13:50It might very well have been to that area Walker was talking to Mel Steiner about the possibility of Bob Shaw throwing a spitter.
- 1:14:00The one to pitch fastball off the outside corner it's two and two.
- 1:14:06This afternoon the Cubs made it seven straight they beat Philadelphia four to two.

- 1:14:24A ground ball is through the middle.
- 1:14:25They've hit back for many.
- 1:14:30Clemente is now two for three and it brings up Manny Jimenez the left fielder.

- 1:14:46Bruce Howard pitching against Pete Rickard.
- 1:14:48The Red Sox Minnesota game not yet underway.
- 1:14:52Swing and a miss strike one.
- 1:14:54And later tonight the Senators and the Angels play at Anaheim.
- 1:15:01Right here we're in the sixth inning one out and one on.
- 1:15:04Pittsburgh in front one nothing.
- 1:15:06Eddie Crane now holding against Roberto Clemente.
- 1:15:10Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:15:12Inside and low one ball one strike.
- 1:15:24Manny Jimenez was hitting 338 at Columbus in the International League when the
- 1:15:28Parrots decided to bring him up and send George Briggs down.
- 1:15:34Now Clemente leading off first.
- 1:15:36Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:15:38Bounced foul into the dirt near home plate one ball two strikes.
- 1:15:51Pittsburgh one run seven hits New York no runs three hits.
- 1:15:57The Mets were in Pittsburgh on their last road trip.
- 1:15:59There were three well-pitched ballgames for the series.
- 1:16:03The Mets won a Twilight Knight doubleheader winning the first game one to nothing.
- 1:16:07And the second game three to two.
- 1:16:09The one to delivery a swing and a miss he struck him out.
- 1:16:16Strikeout number four by Bob Shaw it brings up Don Glenn-Dennett.
- 1:16:21First baseman Don Glenn-Dennett has popped the first and popped the short nothing for two.
- 1:16:33Dennis Bennett pitches tomorrow against Woody Freiman in the battle of left-hander.
- 1:16:41Now the pitch on the way a ground ball hit the short stuff.
- 1:16:43Snagged by Harrelson he flips the boot check.
- 1:16:45Force play on Fennedy and the side is out.
- 1:16:48No runs one hit no errors one left.
- 1:16:51After five and a half innings the Pittsburgh Pirates won and the New York Mets nothing.

- 1:18:08Bud Harrelson, the first step in the last of the sixth inning.
- 1:18:11Bud has reached safely on an error charge to Gene Alley
- 1:18:15and singled a right field for one of the three hits given up by Steve Blass.
- 1:18:21So New York will have Bud Harrelson, Leigh-Anne Jones, and Ken Boyer hitting in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:18:46Now the pitcher on the way, foul ball back into the crowd, no play.
- 1:18:51And the Mets were last in Pittsburgh after winning the Twilight Night doubleheader.
- 1:18:56The following night they were shut out by right-hander Tommy Sisk.
- 1:19:01Jack Fisher pitching well in a losing ball game.
- 1:19:06Bud Harrelson waits, and the pitcher by Blass, a curve up high, that failed to act up for him.
- 1:19:10One ball and one strike.
- 1:19:13Bud had a notion about bunning that ball, and Maury Wells came in on the run.
- 1:19:22Blass has walked only one, struck out four.
- 1:19:27The 1-1 pitch inside of the low, it's 2-1 on Bud Harrelson.
- 1:19:33For the month of June, Bud's batting average is probably around 270.
- 1:19:42Center fielder Mattie Allou, playing Harrelson to hit to the opposite field as he plays him over toward left center.
- 1:19:50And a swing and a miss on a fastball, it's 2-2.
- 1:19:56Roberto Clementi drove home Mattie Allou in the third with the only run of the game.
- 1:20:00Now we're in the last of the sixth inning.
- 1:20:12Blass with his sign now from Jerry May.
- 1:20:14The pitch to Harrelson, a shot through the hole of him, he's hit the left field.
- 1:20:19So the tying run is on with nobody out, as Harrelson again gets the job done.
- 1:20:23This time he's single to the opposite field, he hits the ball hard, through the hole.
- 1:20:29Bud is now 2-3, the fourth hit of the game for New York, and coming up to hit is Leon Jones.
- 1:20:36Leon has popped up the second and been struck out, nothing for 2.
- 1:20:42Now a lively Monday night crowd here at Shea starts with a let's go, let's drive.
- 1:20:47Maury Wills moves in close to third, looking for the bunt.
- 1:20:51Lendena holding against the runner.
- 1:20:53Now Blass up in pitching position.
- 1:20:56He turns around, doesn't offer, and it's a fastball high, one ball and a strike.
- 1:21:04Leon bunts the runner over, and that's when we'll have Ken Boyer and Tommy Davis to try and tie the game up.
- 1:21:17Outfield playing rather deep and a round toward left.
- 1:21:20Again, Pittsburgh anticipates the bunt.
- 1:21:23He squares around, doesn't offer, and it's high ball too.
- 1:21:26Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:21:28Now Jerry May trots back to the mound with the ball.
- 1:21:31And Leon Jones checks with Sally Parker to see if things are still the same, or if they're going to play a waiting game.
- 1:21:45Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:21:55Lendena edging up the line toward home.
- 1:21:58He squares around, bunts, fair ball, Lendena up with it, the play is going to first base in time for the odds.
- 1:22:04Just for a moment, it looked like Lendena would gamble and fire the second.
- 1:22:09But against the speed of Halston, he elected to play it safe and threw the ball to Masurowski, covering it first.
- 1:22:14So Leon sacrifices his turn at bat trying to help build a run.
- 1:22:19Harrelson goes into scoring position, and the batter's sub again is Ken Boyer.
- 1:22:34Ken Boyer has been called out on strikes and grounded out third to first, nothing for two.
- 1:22:48Now Blass looking in for his sign.
- 1:22:54Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:22:55A slow grounder hit right back to the mound.
- 1:22:57Blass grabs it.
- 1:22:58He throws to first in time to get Boyer, and Harrelson moves over to third.
- 1:23:04Now before Tommy Davis steps in, we'll pause for station identification.
- 1:23:08This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 1:23:11This is Bill Edwardson asking you to start your day on the right note with me, 7 to 10 a.m. on the Big Bright Sound, here on WGY Connected.
- 1:23:24Rod Murphy with Lindsey Nelson and Ralph Keiner from Shea Stadium where the Mets now have Bud Harrelson on third, a few men down, and Tommy Davis coming up.
- 1:23:33Tommy has flied to right and flied to deep left field.
- 1:23:37His drive to left was caught right up against the left field wall by Manny Jiminez.
- 1:23:52Here's the pitcher against right-hand hitter.
- 1:23:55Tommy Davis hitting three-seven.
- 1:23:57Fastball outside, one ball and a strike.
- 1:24:03Right here, Tommy Davis hoping to bag his 36th run batted end of the year.
- 1:24:07If he can, this game is tied.
- 1:24:12Beautiful Monday night crowd at Shea.
- 1:24:14The paid crowd is 27,294.
- 1:24:17And a total crowd of 28,152.
- 1:24:21Now the pitch on the way.
- 1:24:22Swing and a miss on a curveball.
- 1:24:24One ball and one strike and Tommy Davis took about as hard a swing at that curveball as you can take.
- 1:24:35Eddie Crane, we won't need a contact.
- 1:24:38Pittsburgh 1, New York nothing.
- 1:24:40Last of the sixth inning.
- 1:24:46Now the windup by Blass, the pitch, swing and a miss and a high hard left.
- 1:24:51That fastball was up in Tommy's eyes.
- 1:24:53He went after it.
- 1:24:57Tommy is strong, an aggressive hitter.
- 1:25:02He likes the looks of it.
- 1:25:03He really goes after it.
- 1:25:09Now one ball, two strikes to Tommy Davis.
- 1:25:14Speed of Blass, 25-year-old right-hander from Lakeville, Connecticut.
- 1:25:18Good stuff.
- 1:25:20Now the one-two pitch, a swing and a miss, he's dragging out.
- 1:25:23And Blass, a fan of a tough hitter, Tommy Davis.
- 1:25:27For Blass, strikeout number five.
- 1:25:29No runs, one hit, no errors and one left.
- 1:25:32The tying run, left-stranded on third.
- 1:25:34At the end of sixth, the Pirates won and the New York Mets nothing.
- 1:25:38The Big Tire.
- 1:25:45The Big Tire.
- 1:25:54The Big Tire, the Gulf Deluxe Crown.
- 1:25:57The Big Tire.
- 1:26:12Now in the top half of the seventh inning, it's Bill Masuratsky coming up for the Pirates.
- 1:26:15The Pirates scored a run in the top half of the third inning, and it has stood up to this point.
- 1:26:19They're right in front, one nothing through sixth.
- 1:26:22For the Pirates, one run on seven hits and one error.
- 1:26:24The Mets, no runs, four hits, no errors.
- 1:26:27Bob Shaw's pitch to the right-hand batter, and it's one run, hits deep to left-center field, way back.
- 1:26:32Going, going, gone.
- 1:26:35A home run for Bill Masuratsky.
- 1:26:38His fourth of this season.
- 1:26:41It leaves off here in the seventh and puts the Pirates out in front by a score of two to nothing.
- 1:26:46Now it's Gene Alley, who's hitting 276 with four homers and 24 runs about at end.
- 1:27:01In this game, he grounded out third, the person grounded into a double play.
- 1:27:04He's a right-hand batter.
- 1:27:06Bob Shaw's pitch, curve ball, and it's in there for a called strike.
- 1:27:11Jerry May coming out to the on-deck circle now for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:27:15Starting the night in fourth place in the National League standing.
- 1:27:23And the pitch breaks low for a ball, it's one-one.
- 1:27:27Now Don Shaw gets up to throw in the Met bow pen.
- 1:27:31Tonight's baseball quiz, two pitchers share the American League mark for the lowest number of strikeouts to lead the league.
- 1:27:37Can you identify them?
- 1:27:39It's a one-one pitch and it's outside for a ball, two and one.
- 1:27:45Nobody on, nobody out for the Pirates in the seventh with one run in.
- 1:27:51On the home run by Masuratsky to make it Pirates two, Met's nothing.
- 1:27:56Now swinging a foul ball, off into the corner of the dugout of the Pirates and rebounding out of the playing field.
- 1:28:01Run down by umpire, Sam Landis.
- 1:28:05Levels are counted two and two.
- 1:28:13This is a bobtail series between the Met's and the Pirates.
- 1:28:16Play again tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:28:18Curve ball in up the alley and left center.
- 1:28:20Tommy Davis coming on, can not get to it.
- 1:28:22He short hops it and whips it in and holding it first now is Gene Alley.
- 1:28:28As Tommy Davis short hopped the ball out of the middle and took a quick look to see if he would get a call from the umpire.
- 1:28:33It has happened, but both are getting down to Tommy and Sam Landis for indicating the ball is in play.
- 1:28:41So the Pirates have a runner at first base, nobody out and Jerry Mays up.
- 1:28:45He's one for two.
- 1:28:53Bob Shaw works off the stretch, runner goes, here's a swing and a miss.
- 1:28:56He throws down to Buczak and he is safe at second base.
- 1:29:04Solemn base for Alley.
- 1:29:06Number three for Gene Alley.
- 1:29:09Hidden round was on, Jerry Mays took a hefty cut and missed.
- 1:29:18Now May steps back out of the batting box for a moment.
- 1:29:21While umpire Mel Sanders comes around to brush off the plate.
- 1:29:30Nobody out for the Pirates and the Sevens.
- 1:29:33Bob Shaw delivers a swing and a high pop foul back into the seat and out of play.
- 1:29:39Jerry Goodey gives it a run and now turns and goes back toward the plate.
- 1:29:53Nothing in two.
- 1:30:00Shaw now checks.
- 1:30:02The pitchers run out and hit one off the house and deep and short his play is at first base in time, the runner holds.
- 1:30:09Alley on the bag at second base.
- 1:30:14One away, pitcher Steve Blass is coming up.
- 1:30:16The answer to the baseball quiz, Bobo Newsom and Tex Houston each struck out 113 American League hitters in 1942 to share the title.
- 1:30:30Blass has been up twice in this game, he struck out both times and all show has struck out four and he's walked none.
- 1:30:37Checks the runner at second.
- 1:30:38Here's the pitch swung on and missed for strike one.
- 1:30:41Maddie Alou has moved out on deck.
- 1:30:52Again, Bob Shaw checks his runner and here is the strike one delivery.
- 1:30:56On the outside corner for a call, strike two.
- 1:31:14Gene Alley leads the pitchers one out and missed the curve ball.
- 1:31:18So Steve Blass has struck out three times and the fifth strike out credited to Shaw, they're at two away.
- 1:31:24When you pull the tab on the Rhine Gold Chug-A-Mug, the top comes off with a hit that sounds like the good Rhine Gold flavor inside.
- 1:31:31Six 12 ounce mugs to the curtain, you'll find them in the Chug-A-Mug special display at your local stores in New York and New Jersey.
- 1:31:42Manager West Westrom calls, time goes to the mound now to talk to Bob Shaw about the possibilities here.
- 1:31:49First base is open.
- 1:31:50Alley is the runner at second.
- 1:31:53Maddie Alou is at the plate and Maury Wills is on deck.
- 1:31:56So it's a short conference just to decide whether or not they'll put him on or pitch to it.
- 1:32:03And they're going to put him on.
- 1:32:05So an intentional walk will be issued to Maddie Alou to set up a fourth play at third and second.
- 1:32:15They'll put two men out and they will pitch them to Maury Wills.
- 1:32:24As ball four away outside and Maddie Alou gets rid of the lumber, goes down to first.
- 1:32:28That is the first walk issued by Bob Shaw.
- 1:32:31Maury Wills is coming up, switch at your batting left.
- 1:32:34He's one for three tonight.
- 1:32:36He's hitting 296 for the season.
- 1:32:46No pitch as Maury Wills backed out of the bat.
- 1:32:49It's not sure if he's ready to deliver but umpire Mel Steiner moved out and raised his hand.
- 1:32:54Now runners lead first and second.
- 1:32:57Shaw's pitch, swung on it on the ground to second base.
- 1:32:59Puchak up with it, goes to Craneville and the side is up.
- 1:33:04Now the Pirates get a run on two hits, no errors and two runs.
- 1:33:08In the middle of the seventh the score is the Pirates two and the Mets nothing.
- 1:33:14Say how would you like a trip to the World Series plus $10,000 to blow in a style of which you are unaccustomed.
- 1:33:20That's the Grand Five and Rynegold score with the Mets game.

- 1:34:22Now in the bottom of the 7th.
- 1:34:23Ed Graenbohm is coming up.
- 1:34:25He's 2 for 2.

- 1:51:33You know that you can buy the same car from any Plymouth dealer and you'll get the same warranty.

- 1:51:43Volume sales allow Armory Garage to offer you that new car.
- 1:51:47Bob Johnson's gonna pitch it for Bob Shaw. We pass the station identification. This is the New York Mets baseball network.

- 1:52:16We're waiting to see if there were any indications of all the clicks off the bat but there's been none yet.
- 1:52:22Johnson is 5 for 10 as a bench hitter. And now Mel Sanders signifies it is a strike.
- 1:52:33It didn't click off the bat and he's getting the call chains on the scoreboard here at Shae Stadium. It is strike one.
- 1:52:40No. Now he's changing it back indicating it's ball one.
- 1:52:45Well here's the swing and the ground ball is short and it's taken by Alley and played over to Clint Denham so it's no consequence for his pitch because Johnson is grounded out short to first.
- 1:52:56One away and it's a strike.
- 1:52:57Well here's the swing and the ground ball is short and it's taken by Alley and played over to Clint Denham so it's no consequence for his pitch because Johnson is grounded out short to first.

- 1:53:17Matty Moda is in the ballgame now and left field for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:53:30Harrison, switch hitter has been on base three straight times. He blasts with a pitch.
- 1:53:36In first strike as Harrison bluffs a bunch. So it's clear now what happened on the pitch a moment ago.
- 1:53:41When Siner was signaling with the index finger of his right hand so vehemently he wasn't indicating strike he was indicating Matty Moda is playing left field.
- 1:53:52Juan Pizarro is up and throwing down there in the pirate bullpen now. Blast delivers high and away and it's one and one.

- 1:54:18Leon Jones nothing but two and a sacrifice tonight.
- 1:54:37Leon Jones is down.
- 1:54:47Leon settles himself in now. Steve Glass has struck out six and walked one in this game.
- 1:54:53And it's in for a close strike. Ken Boyers on deck.
- 1:55:23Bring in a drive in the left center field. Tagged up that ball and it's taken by Moda and played back.
- 1:55:30Leon Jones keeps the Mets hopes alive here in the bottom half of the eighth.
- 1:55:35The swing of the left Ken Boyers tying run at the plate.
- 1:55:38Leon Jones keeps his hitting streak going at sixth consecutive game.

- 1:55:51Base hit number six for the Mets.
- 1:55:54Off Steve Glass.
- 1:56:02The pitch to Boyers.
- 1:56:04It's way back there. It's going going. It's a home run.
- 1:56:35Ken Boyer with his first home run of this season.
- 1:56:39It's a ball out into the pirate bullpen over the left field wall and the score is tied 2-2.
- 1:56:47Tommy Davis up now with two men out and nobody on base and we have a brand new ball game.
- 1:56:53As the Mets have come from behind to tie the score.
- 1:56:57Glass with a pitch low hits in the dirt comes in on one hop and it's ball one.
- 1:57:01Jerry Maycoe's time goes halfway to the mound tosses the ball out to Steve Glass who isn't very happy.
- 1:57:08By having given up a home run to Ken Boyer.
- 1:57:12Boyer until that moment has driven in only four runs this entire season.
- 1:57:17Got two RBIs there. Here's a pitch to Davis low and it's 2-0.
- 1:57:33Ron Taylor throwing down to the med bullpen. 2-0 pitch now and it is low.
- 1:57:38Glass goes behind three and out of Tommy Davis with Ed Crane full on deck.
- 1:57:42And Jerry Maycoe shots there. Well statistically now Bob Shaw is off the hook.
- 1:57:52He cannot be the losing pitcher. He was removed for a pinch hitter in this inning.
- 1:57:58Here's a 3-0 pitch and it is low ball for it.
- 1:58:03The Mets get the go ahead run on it first and Harry Walker the manager of the Pirates is on his way to the mound.
- 1:58:09And that's all for Glass. We're going to get a pitching change.
- 1:58:13He's at Pizarro throwing down the bullpen. Perhaps he wants the left hander to pitch to Crane full. We'll find out in a moment.
- 1:58:21Now Juan Pizarro is walking over towards the electric curtain. He's going to get the right end from the bullpen.
- 1:58:30And that is all for Steve Glass. Harry Walker standing there at the mound but he's back to Glass looking out for the bullpen.
- 1:58:36Pizarro gets the right end to make his sixteenth appearance of this season.
- 1:58:42Overall Pizarro has won three and lost six.
- 1:58:46He pitched against the Mets on the sixth of June for the full nine innings.
- 1:58:54Gave up two runs and six hits with the losing pitcher in a 3-2 game.
- 1:58:59It went into extra innings I believe.
- 1:59:15Of course manager West Western can make a decision of allowing Crane full to hit. Crane full is three for three tonight against the right hander.
- 1:59:23Or he can go to his bench and get the likes of Tommy Reynolds or Hawk Taylor or Ed Charles.
- 1:59:32Crane full at this moment is going back into the dugout.
- 1:59:36Steve Glass went for seven and two thirds. Gave up two runs on seven hits. Struck out section walk two.
- 1:59:44Now Pizarro is on the mound.
- 1:59:53He is obtained by the parrots from the Chicago White Sox during the off season.

- 2:00:47Listen to the chat of let's go Mets.
- 2:00:55Crane and Fulgum tries to get the left hander against the right hander. He was three for three tonight.
- 2:01:01That's the batting in the bottom half of the eighth inning with Tommy Davis on his three.
- 2:01:06Two men out and the score is tied two to.
- 2:01:15Juan Fizarro is up and set.
- 2:01:18Runner goes and the pitch is low and it's on the second and it's a stolen base.
- 2:01:23The fourth for Tommy Davis.
- 2:01:25Tommy Davis with a stolen base move the go ahead run in the scoring position.
- 2:01:32One and oh the capture Crane boo.
- 2:01:42Now Tommy Davis leads off the bag at second. Fizarro off the stretch.
- 2:01:46One hole pitch to Crane boo. Low and away in the dirt dug out by Jerry May.
- 2:01:49The fire is get your calls time and he goes out to the mound to have a talk with Juan Fizarro.
- 2:02:02Roy Faison Billy Odell and I'll throw in the bullpen for the powering.

- 2:02:11It will be a two oh pitch day at Crane boo.
- 2:02:13The boat is waiting on day. Now the two delivery and it is in for a call strike.
- 2:02:21Two and one the crane.
- 2:02:31Again the pitch.
- 2:02:33Swung on and looked out in the right corner field committee coming on coming on and committee makes the catch on the right.
- 2:02:39So the side is out. But the Mets picked up two runs on two hits after two were out.
- 2:02:46No errors and one left. The end of eight full innings the score is the Mets two and the Parrots two.
- 2:02:52When it came to defending home our country the woman's role has been traditionally passive.
- 2:02:58But the defense of freedom today requires such a complex structure that there are numerous opportunities for the American woman to take an active part in the service of our country.
- 2:03:10For the college graduate these opportunities are even more inviting because she is eligible to serve as an officer in our Navy waves.
- 2:03:19Today all America recognizes the wave officer as a woman who is more than dedicated to the heritage of our country.
- 2:03:26She wants an honorable position one with responsibility one that she can fill with pride.
- 2:03:34She told her Navy recruiter she'd like to become a wave officer.
- 2:03:38If you're a college graduate may we suggest you do the same thing.
- 2:03:42You'll be helping yourself and your country see your Navy recruiter today.
- 2:03:56Now in the do the pitching for the New York Mets is Ron Taylor making his 18th appearance he has won one and lost two.
- 2:04:05Last time out in Atlanta he worked one and two thirds without no runs no hits.
- 2:04:08He picked up a victory against the Atlanta Braves by working a third of an inning.
- 2:04:13So it's right hander Ron Taylor and as soon as he is warmed up he'll be working to right hand batter Jean Alley the shortstop of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2:04:23In case you've joined us along the way the Pirates went out in front in the top half of the third inning here tonight when Mattie Allou lined the single to center.
- 2:04:32Moved to second on a hit and run play when Maury Wills grounded out second to first and then Roberto Clemente singled him home.
- 2:04:40That run stood up until the seventh and Bill Masurowski hit a lead off homer and the Pirates had a two run lead.
- 2:04:47And then after two were out in the bottom half of the eighth inning for the Mets.
- 2:04:50Cleon Jones got a single to keep his hitting streak alive at sixth consecutive game.
- 2:04:53And Ken Boyer stepped up and hit his first home run of this season into the Pirates bullpen over the left field fence to make it a 2 2 ballgame.
- 2:05:04Neither of the starting pitchers is around now and the pitchers of record are the pitchers in the ballgame.
- 2:05:11Jean Alley grounded out, grounded into a double play and singled a left.
- 2:05:28He's hitting 279.
- 2:05:30Ron Taylor's pitch in for a called strike.
- 2:05:44Flicked off the bat of Jean Alley says umpire Mel Steiner.
- 2:05:50Jerry May is waiting on deck.
- 2:05:52Strike one pitch and it's low for a one and one.
- 2:06:02Here's the one one offering low for a ball.
- 2:06:11So Taylor goes behind two and one.
- 2:06:14The Mets have two runs seven hits.
- 2:06:17Pirates have two runs ten hits.
- 2:06:20And the Pirates have a three run lead.
- 2:06:22And the two one delivery is a chopper at a third and Boyer charges a three run lead.
- 2:06:33And the Pirates have a three run lead.
- 2:06:35And the two one delivery is a chopper at a third and Boyer charges comes up with it goes on the run in time.
- 2:06:54So Alley is grounded out third to first and that'll bring up Jerry May who has won for three.
- 2:07:06Number 12.
- 2:07:23Andre Rogers is coming out of the on deck circle.
- 2:07:26Here's a swing and a looper and a right and a late start.
- 2:07:29Right field around for butter and it falls in as a base hit for Jerry May.
- 2:07:32Now Andre Rogers looks back to the dugout.
- 2:07:38He is out there on deck as a perspective at it for Juan Pizarro.
- 2:07:41However this might be a sacrifice situation and Rogers is looking now he's being called back.
- 2:07:47And Al Luplo is going over to the bat rack.
- 2:07:50Al Luplo who recently went from the Mets to the Pittsburgh Pirates is getting a bat.
- 2:07:55He does not yet have a base hit with the Pirates.
- 2:08:02He's gone over eight since down in the uniform of the Pirates.
- 2:08:09So his season batting average is down to 177.
- 2:08:18Luplo batting for Pizarro and manager West Westrom comes out now.
- 2:08:23And the talk with Ron Taylor, John Sullivan and Ed Craneville.
- 2:08:31With Luplo batting for Pizarro, Mattie Alou has moved out there on deck.
- 2:08:34Story time 2-2 but the Pirates have picked up a base runner here in the top of the ninth with one man out.
- 2:08:49Al Luplo. Luplo is a down. He's a left hand batter.
- 2:09:00Downs the plate and digs in a little bit.
- 2:09:15Craneville holds against the runner Jerry May at first.
- 2:09:19And the pitch is hung on. It's on the ground foul back at first. It's strike one.
- 2:09:23Luplo looks down to sign man Alex Gramis on the coaching line at third.
- 2:09:31Luplo wears contact lenses on the playing field. He wears conventional glasses at other times.
- 2:09:42Ron Taylor sets and the pitch. Low for a ball as Taylor came overhand.
- 2:09:49It's one and one.
- 2:10:06Again Ron Taylor looks down to get a sign from Johnny Sullivan.
- 2:10:09The one one pitch. In for a call. Strike two. That's the knee. So it's one and two.
- 2:10:25Pizarro out of the ball game of course with Luplo up here batting for him.
- 2:10:28Roy Face and Vernon Law are throwing in the pirate bullpen.
- 2:10:37Jerry May takes his lead. The one two delivery. Low. Two and two.
- 2:10:53Don Shaw is throwing in the med bullpen. A little lefty with a left hand batter Maddie Allou on deck.
- 2:11:07One away for the pirates on the ninth.
- 2:11:12Jerry May leads it first. The two two pitch to Luplo. It's deep to right. It's way back there if it stays there.
- 2:11:24And it is a foul ball. Just to the foul side of the foul pole. Way down in the right field corner.
- 2:11:35Edwin was hanging up there a long long time and Jerry May cuts across the infield grass. Coming back to first.
- 2:11:48Now it holds it two and two to Al Luplo as he gave that one a long ride.
- 2:11:56With the match he had three home runs.
- 2:11:58The long ball hitter.
- 2:12:09Two two pitch. And he hits it deep to center. Leon Jones goes way back. He's at the warning track.
- 2:12:15He makes the catch and Jerry May apparently thought there were two men out. He is rounded second.
- 2:12:20He'll have to touch second going back to throw the first and double play.
- 2:12:22And so it is a double play that goes eight six three.
- 2:12:28And Jerry May had a middle left. Thought that there were two men out and he ran all the way around almost to third.
- 2:12:35Before Alex Gammis got the word to him.
- 2:12:38So on the long fly to center taken by Cleon Jones. And he's turned into a double play.
- 2:12:44The side is out. No runs. They hit no other as man left.
- 2:12:47Now in the middle of the night the score is a match two and the power is two. And now here's a word from Reingold.
- 2:12:53Look. You can't pull the wool over their eyes. You can't hit the public around here.
- 2:13:01You can't put one over on these guys. They'll put you right out on your ear.
- 2:13:08In this town either you have it or you don't. Either you're a pro or you won't get very far.
- 2:13:20There are three hundred and two beers trying to make it in New York from all over.
- 2:13:26But only one beer has made it to the top. The rich dry lager Reingold.
- 2:13:32In this town either you have it or you don't.
- 2:13:35In this town either you have it or you don't.
- 2:13:41Either you're a pro or you won't get very far.
- 2:13:46Either you have it or you don't.
- 2:13:51Reingold.
- 2:13:56The picture for the pirates now is little man Elroy Faith.
- 2:14:00On the 6th of June in Pittsburgh the Mets took both ends of a twilight doubleheader from the Pirates.
- 2:14:08Faith worked the last inning of each game and was the losing pitcher each time as the Mets won it one to nothing and three to two.
- 2:14:15Faith overall is making his 25th appearance for the Pirates.
- 2:14:19He has won four and lost only the two games that he lost to the Mets this season.
- 2:14:25In the bottom of the ninth the Mets are scheduled to send up Ron Swabota, Jerry Buchak and John Sullivan to try to pull it out in the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 2:14:36There he goes, Jerry Mays throw down the second around the horn and Ron Swabota is coming up.
- 2:14:44Round it into a force play, round it out and round it into a force play.
- 2:14:50Of course the fans here chasted him the Mets and the Pirates were the winners.
- 2:14:56The Pirates were the winners.
- 2:14:59Round it into a force play, round it out and round it into a force play. Of course the fans here chasted him the Mets and the hopeful that Swabota or Buchak or Sullivan can get a hold of a one and give it a long ride out of the ballpark to end the ballgame.
- 2:15:18Roy Faith takes the side.
- 2:15:20And the pitch is outside for a ball.
- 2:15:31At third base, Maury Wills is guarding the line, protecting against the extra base hit.
- 2:15:37One open and it's in for a call strike, it's one and one to Swabota.
- 2:15:50Bottom of the ninth with a score tied 2-2. Here's a one-one pitch, swung on and missed.
- 2:15:56A slider and Swabota took a hefty cut, one ball and two strikes. Buchak kneeling in the on deck circle, defensively the Pirates plays Swabota straight away.
- 2:16:06A little man now, and pitches. And it's outside, 2-2, Swabota was ready to go. Moved his body forward but did not swing the bat, so the count's level at 2-2.
- 2:16:28Humpire Mel Santé comes around quickly to brush the plate.
- 2:16:38The voters had four home runs and twelve runs vetted in this year.
- 2:16:43This is a 2-2 pitch. Foul back and out of play and the count continues at 2-2.
- 2:17:08Again Roy Fates, goes to the rubber to take the sign.
- 2:17:16Swinging a ground ball foul back of third, Maury Wills over bare hands and flips it right back to Roy Fates.
- 2:17:24So the count continues 2-2.
- 2:17:37Swabota swings the bat as he waits. The pitch, swung on and missed. Roy Fates strikes out Swabota. First strike out, four-face. Steve Blass struck out sixth.
- 2:17:54Jerry Buchak's up. He struck out, walked and flied deep to right.
- 2:18:00Buchak is a right-hand batter.
- 2:18:11Johnny Sullivan moves out on deck.
- 2:18:17Pitch is in for a called strike. Right-hand pitcher working to a right-hand batter here.
- 2:18:29Bards play Buchak straight away as well. Here's a swing and a ground ball up the middle. Nazarovsky will behind the bag, gets rid of it over the first and not in time. He's there safely. The throw was in the dirt and Glendening tried to scoop it up and could not come up with it cleanly. He sort of scooped it up into the air. It's a base hit for Jerry Buchak.
- 2:18:49He becomes potential winning run. Here in the bottom half of the ninth inning with one man out, left-hand batter John Sullivan coming up.
- 2:18:56John Sullivan, number 28.
- 2:19:01Nazarovsky went in behind the bag a second to get that ground ball, got rid of it in a hurry, but did not have enough on it to get it over there all the way.
- 2:19:10Don Shaw throwing in the bow pin for the mess with Ron Taylor moving out on deck. Score tied 2-2. Buchak leads it first, face for the pitch. Hung on, that missed, strike one.
- 2:19:20Sullivan's up for his first time in the game.
- 2:19:28Hitting 191. We had one run battered in.
- 2:19:38The pitch in for a called strike two to Sullivan who stares at the plate.
- 2:19:45And now Roy Face has gone ahead. He has an 0-2 count to the left-hand batter. Glendening is holding against the runner at first base.
- 2:19:53Here's a swing and a drive in the right field coming on it for Mitty. He can't get it. He goes mostly slow.
- 2:20:00Buchak ground second on his way to third. Mitty falls down, gets up with the ball, throws the first. Buchak's at third and Sullivan's at first.
- 2:20:08Well, Clemente was battling it every step of the way and it was battling back out in right field. It was a line smash. Clemente decided he would try to shoestring it.
- 2:20:19It went off his glove and rolled a dozen feet away. If he got to it, he slipped down.
- 2:20:25It is scored as a single. No error. A single all the way. No error on Clemente as it is the opinion of the official scorer that Buchak should have gone from first to third.
- 2:20:41So now the potential winning runner is at third base. We're going to get a pinch runner. Dick Selma comes in to run for John Sullivan at first base.
- 2:20:48Selma runs for Sullivan. Ed Charles is going to come up now to bat for Ron Taylor. One man out. The Pirates will have to play it here to try to choke off the run.
- 2:21:01Ed Charles is batting for Ron Taylor. Dick Selma is running for Johnny Sullivan.
- 2:21:21Now the Pirates move the outfield in because the long play ball will end the ball game anyway. So the outfield is playing shallow.
- 2:21:31The infield is set halfway so they can still try to go for the double play or possibly make a play at the plate.
- 2:21:39Charles is the right hand batter. Roy Faith working.
- 2:21:43He's taking a time. I'm catching Jerry May. Now he goes up and set and the pitch.
- 2:21:56The next win it as the run crosses the plate. Selma goes on to third. Charles with a single to left center and a run batted in and the Mets win it by a score of three to two.
- 2:22:13Getting their tenth hit of the ball game to win it. And again Roy Faith is the losing pitcher in this ball game.
- 2:22:18Ed Charles drives Buczak in from third base. It was a streaming line drive out into left center field. So Ron Taylor is the winner and Roy Faith once again is the losing pitcher in this ball game.
- 2:22:34We'll be back here in a moment with a final summary and totals.
- 2:22:38Right now the repeat this to El Gato is Blanco El Gato is Blanco. We didn't already. El Mundo is Redondo El Mundo is Redondo.
- 2:22:51In the Peace Corps you'll be taught the language of the country you're going to so well. You learn to eat in it. Sleep in it.
- 2:22:58Play basketball in it. Plant crops in it. Build bridges in it. Make roads in it. And even dream in it.
- 2:23:05Peace Corps training must be as tough as Peace Corps work. It's the only way you can get in shape for it.
- 2:23:13Take Dick Olmstead. After he joined the Peace Corps he built eight chicken coops, three lean-to's, dug four latrines and planted a four acre garden.
- 2:23:24Then we sent him overseas. This is how the Peace Corps works for peace. Would you like to work for peace? You may be qualified.
- 2:23:33Write the Peace Corps in Washington for an application.
- 2:23:48Well the New York Mets have come from behind to pull one out here tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning it by a score of three to two and winning it in the bottom half of the ninth, any one man out when the winning run was scored.
- 2:23:58Starting out it was Steve Blass working on the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Bob Shaw for the New York Mets and the Pirates scored first in the top half of the third inning.
- 2:24:08Mattie Allou singled a center field. On a hit and run play Maury Wills grounded out and moved Allou to second. Roberto Clemente singled a right driving in the first run of the ballgame.
- 2:24:17It stayed one nothing until the seventh inning. Then Bill Maseratky had a lead off home run and the Pirates had a two run lead.
- 2:24:22The Mets meanwhile were getting nowhere against Steve Blass but in the bottom half of the eighth inning with two men out, Cleon Jones kept his hitting streak alive at six consecutive games with a single to left center.
- 2:24:34Ken Boyer stepped up to the plate and on the first pitch by Blass to Boyer he homered into the bullpen over the left field fence and we had a brand new ballgame at 2-2.
- 2:24:43It was Boyer's first home run of this season and then after Tommy Davis threw a walk Blass came out, Pizarro came in, got Craneville to fly out and end that inning.
- 2:24:52Then the Pirates threatened in the ninth inning when they got Jerry May aboard. Ron Taylor was in the ballgame in relief at that point for the New York Mets but the Mets got out when Jerry May suffered a mental lapse and after a long fly ball was hit by Al Luplo batting for Pizarro to center field.
- 2:25:12Jerry May took off all the way around second and was almost at third before he realized there was only one man out until he had no chance to get back from it completing the double play.
- 2:25:22Then in the bottom half of the ninth inning with one man out Jerry Buczak got a base hit when he hit a ground ball up the middle.
- 2:25:30Mazurowski played it over the first but in the dirt and Buczak was on with a base hit.
- 2:25:33Sullivan lined the ball to right field, Clemente decided to try to shoestring it. It was off his glove, rolled a dozen feet away when he got to it he fell down.
- 2:25:42It was scored as a single and Buczak went all the way to third. Then Ed Charles came up to bat against Roy Faius working in relief for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2:25:50And Ed Charles lined a shot to left center to drive in the winning runs and the Mets had won the ballgame.
- 2:25:55In one run ballgames now the Mets have won 12 and lost 7. The Mets are now one game and three percentage points in tonight's play in the National League standing.
- 2:26:07The winning pitcher is Ron Taylor who has won two and lost two. The loser is Roy Faius who has won four and lost three and the Mets have beaten him all three times.
- 2:26:15So here are the final totals in the game. Four of the Mets, three runs on ten hits and no errors for the Pirates, two runs on eleven hits and one error.
- 2:26:24Final score Mets three, Pirates two.
