Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Cardinals 2025 MLB Draft Recap
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to Cardinal territory and happy second half. I
- 0:08Speaker 1: cannot believe that we are here with just sixty five
- 0:11Speaker 1: Cardinals games to go. The All Star Game is over,
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Home Run Derby is over, and of course the
- 0:16Speaker 1: twenty twenty five MLB Draft is over. So I thought
- 0:19Speaker 1: we would bring in one of the experts here on everything. Draft.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Baseball America's JJ Cooper joins the show. JJ, how are
- 0:25Speaker 1: you in congratulations on surviving another draft.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I will tell you the adrenaline is kind of receding now.
- 0:32Speaker 3: It was kind of nice.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I kind of have taken a couple of days of
- 0:35Speaker 2: a little bit slower post raft, post Futures Game, post
- 0:39Speaker 2: All Star Game and all that.
- 0:40Speaker 3: But hey, we're back.
- 0:41Speaker 2: You know, we're now rolling again, and yeah, it feels
- 0:44Speaker 2: like it's the second half. But at the same time,
- 0:46Speaker 2: I feel like we're at like sixty five percent at
- 0:48Speaker 2: the same time, so it's like, Okay, we're now really
- 0:51Speaker 2: into the second half.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Trade deadline is going to be here before we know it. Yep.
- 0:54Speaker 1: It's that mad dash to the summer months, and for
- 0:56Speaker 1: the Cardinals, their season could either be the next sixty
- 0:59Speaker 1: five games or the next ten, depending on how they
- 1:01Speaker 1: play and what they do do decide going into the
- 1:03Speaker 1: trade deadline. But there's a lot to like about what
- 1:06Speaker 1: the Cardinals did over at the last week or so.
- 1:08Speaker 1: But before we get into how their draft went and
- 1:11Speaker 1: how we scouting, doctor Ready Flores did, I want to
- 1:13Speaker 1: ask you, JJ, what is it like covering the draft
- 1:16Speaker 1: and the days leading up to it? And then were
- 1:17Speaker 1: you surprised by how the first five picks went down?
- 1:21Speaker 2: So this is where this like I it is fun
- 1:24Speaker 2: to try to figure out all the permutations. And in
- 1:29Speaker 2: some ways yes, because like we are final mock did
- 1:32Speaker 2: not have Eli Willets going number one, and then once
- 1:34Speaker 2: that happens, it cascades down throughout everything. But at the
- 1:38Speaker 2: same time, no, because like I think it's funny, like
- 1:41Speaker 2: how you do a lot of stuff in all but
- 1:42Speaker 2: Carlos Clauza for US actually did a video in April.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I believe that laid out like how Eli Willets could
- 1:50Speaker 2: end up as the first pick in the draft to
- 1:52Speaker 2: the Nationals, And that's kind of what happened, which is
- 1:55Speaker 2: is like, okay, if you like all these guys roughly
- 1:58Speaker 2: this range, and you kind of take the guy who's
- 2:02Speaker 2: going to give you the deal that you want, and
- 2:04Speaker 2: you're going to get a lot more down the road,
- 2:06Speaker 2: and then just things after that started cascading as well,
- 2:09Speaker 2: where I would say that if you look at the
- 2:11Speaker 2: totality of the top of this draft and you look
- 2:14Speaker 2: at some of the agreements that we already have bonus wise,
- 2:17Speaker 2: like Tyler Breunners and all, what it tells you is
- 2:20Speaker 2: there was viewed as there wasn't a ton of separation
- 2:23Speaker 2: at the top between one guy and another. And so
- 2:26Speaker 2: if you don't view it as oh, Ethan Holiday is
- 2:29Speaker 2: a clear step ahead, or oh, you know, I think
- 2:33Speaker 2: that Liam Doyle or Jamie Arnold or Tyler Breunner is
- 2:35Speaker 2: a clear step ahead, then the guys who kind of
- 2:38Speaker 2: work out and give you deals give you a lower
- 2:41Speaker 2: bonus than the allotted amount allows you to spend more
- 2:44Speaker 2: later on. And that's I think when you look at
- 2:47Speaker 2: when of the dust clears on this top five, that'll
- 2:50Speaker 2: definitely be all of these players the top and very
- 2:54Speaker 2: few exceptions of Paul schemes like exception usually sign for
- 2:58Speaker 2: less than the allotment for those picks, because the way
- 3:02Speaker 2: it's designed is there's a lot of leverage. There's a
- 3:05Speaker 2: lot of reason if you're a player. If I'm a player,
- 3:07Speaker 2: and I can go one or I can go five,
- 3:10Speaker 2: even though they have reduced the differences between those picks.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Or I can go one, or I can go six,
- 3:15Speaker 2: I can go two, or I can go eight. I
- 3:17Speaker 2: can take a lot less money than the number two
- 3:20Speaker 2: pick is quote supposed to get and still make a
- 3:23Speaker 2: good bit more money than I would if I take
- 3:24Speaker 2: the risk of falling to eight and getting us a
- 3:27Speaker 2: full slot.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I think we saw a lot of that happen this year.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I mean that certainly makes sense. I know I was
- 3:33Speaker 1: surprised when Eli Willets went one one that we'd heard
- 3:35Speaker 1: over the last couple days thanks to reporting from you
- 3:37Speaker 1: guys that he was maybe higher on people's draft boards
- 3:40Speaker 1: than originally projected, and then certainly did not see Tyler
- 3:42Speaker 1: Bremner going two overall. But it's definitely a very Angels pick.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Very hard to figure out what the Angels are doing
- 3:48Speaker 1: in all aspects of baseball.
- 3:50Speaker 2: You will fly to the big leagues quickly. I feel
- 3:52Speaker 2: comfortable in predicting that he's pretty polished. He had a
- 3:54Speaker 2: great finish to the season, and he is now in
- 3:56Speaker 2: an organization where he knows he should be collecting major
- 3:59Speaker 2: league in the not too distant.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Future, and that's what the Angels do. They have routinely
- 4:04Speaker 1: with their first round pick, looked at guys that can
- 4:06Speaker 1: maybe fast track to the major league. So Tyler Bredner
- 4:08Speaker 1: could do that, and then Liam Doyle can do that
- 4:11Speaker 1: as well. I know Cardinals fans are rightfully super excited
- 4:14Speaker 1: about the Cardinals first round draft pick. We'll get into
- 4:16Speaker 1: all of the Liam Doyle things first. So a giveaway
- 4:19Speaker 1: that we have here at Cardinal Territory. Did you know

- 4:46Speaker 1: at eleven to fifty nine pm Eastern. Go ahead and
- 4:48Speaker 1: check it out at chat BCC. All right, let's break
- 4:52Speaker 1: into what everyone wants to talk about, including myself, Liam
- 4:55Speaker 1: Doyle not exactly the Cardinals prototype usually, but here he
- 4:59Speaker 1: is with one hundred and one mile power fastball, just
- 5:02Speaker 1: a crazy or unorthodox delivery, even more crazy kind of
- 5:07Speaker 1: viral celebrations on the mound, and most excitingly is one
- 5:11Speaker 1: of those pictures at fast tracks of the major leagues. JJ,
- 5:14Speaker 1: what are your impressions about Liam Doyle and why didn't
- 5:16Speaker 1: this is a good pit for Saint Lewis.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Doyle is like, as you said, if you said that
- 5:22Speaker 2: the typical, and I want to say always typical, because
- 5:24Speaker 2: they've drafted some guys like Michael McGreevy and all over
- 5:28Speaker 2: the years where you're like that guy, there's some risk there,
- 5:31Speaker 2: but you know, if he figures out his control, he
- 5:33Speaker 2: could be really good. They've taken some of those guys,
- 5:35Speaker 2: you know, you go back years ago, but like you
- 5:37Speaker 2: take the Carlos Martinez and the Alex ray is is
- 5:39Speaker 2: it's not like they've been like no, no, no, we
- 5:41Speaker 2: are utterly allergic to vlosity. But I would say that
- 5:44Speaker 2: the more typical top of the draft Cardinals pick is
- 5:47Speaker 2: that really polished, really well rounded picture. You're like, well,
- 5:50Speaker 2: if he has a concern it said, he doesn't miss
- 5:52Speaker 2: a whole lot of bats.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Liam Doyle misses bat. That's not a concern with Liam Doyle.
- 5:56Speaker 2: As you said, you are talking about one of the
- 5:58Speaker 2: best fastballs, if not the best fastball in this class,
- 6:02Speaker 2: and he uses it a lot. He is a pitcher
- 6:05Speaker 2: who can go through innings just dominating with the fastball
- 6:09Speaker 2: because it does have velocity, it has good movement characteristics,
- 6:13Speaker 2: it has all the things you're looking to to try
- 6:16Speaker 2: to just basically dominate with that. He has a change
- 6:19Speaker 2: up that plays very well with it. And then we
- 6:22Speaker 2: get to the question, the big question with him though,
- 6:24Speaker 2: is okay, does that is that going to be enough?
- 6:29Speaker 3: Or is he going to have.
- 6:30Speaker 2: To figure out It's not like he doesn't throw a
- 6:32Speaker 2: breaking while he's a slider, but is it going to
- 6:35Speaker 2: be good enough as it currently stands to get to
- 6:38Speaker 2: have success in the majors or is that something that's
- 6:41Speaker 2: going to be the to do list? Is that going
- 6:43Speaker 2: to be something where it's here now and it's going
- 6:46Speaker 2: to have to get to hear for him to be
- 6:48Speaker 2: that front of the rotation starter that you're hoping when
- 6:50Speaker 2: you take him, you know, that high in the draft.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And that's the question we don't know, like when we
- 6:55Speaker 2: talk to scouts, when we talk to front offices all
- 6:58Speaker 2: through the season, I think we had three different people,
- 7:01Speaker 2: Sollliam Noyle in person, you know, talking to scouts at
- 7:03Speaker 2: those games and all, and you would get very mixed reviews.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Right now, when I say mixed reviews, no one was like, oh,
- 7:09Speaker 2: this guy's terrible, but the reviews were some player people,
- 7:13Speaker 2: some evaluators see him as where he is right now
- 7:17Speaker 2: could basically be the path to big league success. There
- 7:20Speaker 2: are pitchers who can pitch off the fast ball, off
- 7:22Speaker 2: a changeup, and the breaking balls in their view good
- 7:26Speaker 2: enough to be a part of that and you can
- 7:28Speaker 2: now work. But there are definitely others who are like you,
- 7:31Speaker 2: like the pieces you have here, the fallback position of
- 7:34Speaker 2: this guy being a.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Really good reliever are already there right now.
- 7:38Speaker 2: But if he's going to be what you want him
- 7:40Speaker 2: to be, he's going to really have to find a
- 7:42Speaker 2: better breaking ball, one that he can come comfortably throw
- 7:47Speaker 2: to give. Especially really in his case, you know, good
- 7:50Speaker 2: news for him same side hitters, because change up it's
- 7:52Speaker 2: pretty good against, you know, when he has the platoon advantage.
- 7:56Speaker 2: But to give him a better way to get through
- 7:59Speaker 2: a lineup multiltiple times, and that's you know again, like
- 8:03Speaker 2: you get to see this all the time. I've been saying,
- 8:06Speaker 2: like with this, I'm going to be fascinated to see
- 8:08Speaker 2: like you're reporting and others like, come spring training, are
- 8:12Speaker 2: we going to be reading about, Hey, Liam Doyle was
- 8:15Speaker 2: working in the lab this offseason, and check out this
- 8:19Speaker 2: fill in the blank breaking ball. It's a new grip,
- 8:22Speaker 2: it's a different pitch, it's whatever it may be. Like
- 8:26Speaker 2: we talk about Paul Skeens, who kind of is the
- 8:29Speaker 2: gold standard of what you want to see from a
- 8:30Speaker 2: college pitcher, who just steps in and basically becomes the
- 8:34Speaker 2: All Star starter of the next two years. I don't
- 8:35Speaker 2: expect that for Liam Doyle. That's the first Paul Skeenes
- 8:38Speaker 2: first time's ever happened. But Paul Skeene showed up for
- 8:41Speaker 2: spring training and he's like, check out this splinker I have.
- 8:44Speaker 2: That gives me another weapon to face, you know, hitters.
- 8:49Speaker 3: He didn't.
- 8:49Speaker 2: He had messed with that pitch at LSU, but he
- 8:51Speaker 2: never really threw it. And so if Liam Doyle shows
- 8:56Speaker 2: up next year and it's like, hey, we figured out
- 8:59Speaker 2: that a sweeper it's really good for me, or a
- 9:01Speaker 2: bullet slider or a you know, a cut you know,
- 9:04Speaker 2: a cutter or like it could be a variety of
- 9:07Speaker 2: ways that you could say, all of a sudden, he
- 9:10Speaker 2: has that breaking ball. That is the thing that we
- 9:13Speaker 2: want to see and controls pretty solid, as you said.
- 9:15Speaker 2: The other thing is is he's done this at Tennessee.
- 9:18Speaker 2: He's done it regularly as a starter, so it's not
- 9:21Speaker 2: like something where you're projecting converting a reliever, but the
- 9:24Speaker 2: delivery has some energy to it. Can he maintain that
- 9:27Speaker 2: over a major league workload is the.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Other question, and that's kind of what we talked about
- 9:32Speaker 1: with scouting director Randy Flores after the draft a shout
- 9:35Speaker 1: out flow of Cardinals had four picks on Sunday, and
- 9:37Speaker 1: right after picking Liam Doyle, arguably their most important pick
- 9:40Speaker 1: in years, he met with the media, so plus one
- 9:42Speaker 1: for Flow and we talked about this, Look, we know
- 9:45Speaker 1: this JJ. No major league team drafts for need you
- 9:47Speaker 1: draft for what's best available. It's a lot different than
- 9:49Speaker 1: NFL or NBA. But I asked Flow, when you think
- 9:54Speaker 1: about the extreme costs of starting pitching on the market,
- 9:57Speaker 1: especially for high by low, high swing and miss, does
- 10:00Speaker 1: that maybe increase the importance of drafting and developing that
- 10:03Speaker 1: own talent in your system, and he said absolutely. I'll
- 10:06Speaker 1: read this quote from him. He said with Liam Doyle specifically,
- 10:09Speaker 1: Flow said, there is risk, but I think for upside
- 10:12Speaker 1: you have to swallow that risk. Acquiring swing and miss.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Acquiring one hundred and one miles per hour with that
- 10:17Speaker 1: unique fastball on the free agent market is very expensive,
- 10:19Speaker 1: So certainly there is some risk. There is some possible
- 10:22Speaker 1: risk of him being a believer. Our hope is that
- 10:24Speaker 1: he's only really committed to this type of fitness and
- 10:26Speaker 1: stamina for one year. Imagine as he began stacking it.
- 10:29Speaker 1: It bodes well for his chances to stay as a
- 10:31Speaker 1: starter of Cardinals fans. For those of you who don't know,
- 10:34Speaker 1: Liam Doyle over went a very extensive workout routine, completely
- 10:37Speaker 1: changed the way that he was working out, lost nearly
- 10:39Speaker 1: twenty pounds going into the season with Tennessee. So it
- 10:42Speaker 1: does give the Cardinals some sort of excitement going forward.
- 10:46Speaker 2: By the way, I think all of us at some
- 10:48Speaker 2: point had tried workout plans. I wish I had workout
- 10:50Speaker 2: plans that worked that well, and that probably earned me
- 10:54Speaker 2: an additional four to five million dollars because if you
- 10:57Speaker 2: look at where Liam Doyle was coming out of last
- 10:59Speaker 2: year to this year. That was one of the best
- 11:01Speaker 2: workout plans that anyone could ever do, because he did
- 11:03Speaker 2: transform himself and get into that, you know, that shape
- 11:07Speaker 2: to be that kind of dominating and the guy who
- 11:09Speaker 2: answered the bell every Friday night against some of the
- 11:12Speaker 2: best competition in college baseball for one of the best
- 11:14Speaker 2: teams in college baseball.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Yeah, Liam Doyle dropped the workout routine, my guy. I mean,
- 11:18Speaker 1: it's July. We all need it. And to your point, JJ,
- 11:21Speaker 1: he signed for seven. Doyle sign for seven point twenty
- 11:24Speaker 1: five million dollars. That is a little under slot for
- 11:26Speaker 1: the number five pick. I believe it was right around
- 11:28Speaker 1: eight point one. So it goes back to what you
- 11:29Speaker 1: were saying about these guys and where they're signing, and
- 11:32Speaker 1: the Cardinals were able to maybe navigate their bonus pool
- 11:35Speaker 1: a little more.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Right, and that's still by I think what we're going
- 11:38Speaker 2: to see is as a percentage of the bonus pool,
- 11:41Speaker 2: that's gonna be one of the higher guys in that
- 11:42Speaker 2: top five six picks, because like Tyler Bremner, I think
- 11:45Speaker 2: it was the seventy five percent, which is that is
- 11:49Speaker 2: the lowest that they could offer him, because I believe
- 11:52Speaker 2: that he did go through you know, the combine, the
- 11:54Speaker 2: medical and all that, and so you have to offer
- 11:56Speaker 2: at least seventy five percent. So he got the you know,
- 11:58Speaker 2: so there are other guys who got.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Significantly less as far as the bonus ball.
- 12:03Speaker 2: The other thing I'll say with that though, I think
- 12:04Speaker 2: that you made a good point there, and you know,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and Randy Flores did, which is I do view this nowadays,
- 12:10Speaker 2: right ten years ago, we would look at this and say, well,
- 12:12Speaker 2: what is Liam Doyle's eta, And it would probably be
- 12:16Speaker 2: safest to say twenty seven. That was kind of the
- 12:20Speaker 2: normal path like you would go out and in very
- 12:23Speaker 2: few cases there were guys who moved faster than this.
- 12:26Speaker 2: But a lot of times it'd be like, I'm going
- 12:27Speaker 2: to pitch a little bit this year. I don't think
- 12:29Speaker 2: nowadays the way it goes. If you told me that
- 12:31Speaker 2: he throws ten innings, I wouldn't be shocked. He told
- 12:33Speaker 2: me through zero official innings this year he had a
- 12:35Speaker 2: heavy workload a tennesseee.
- 12:36Speaker 3: I haven't asked.
- 12:37Speaker 2: You may have, you know, Flora, you know Randy and
- 12:38Speaker 2: I may have said, but like normally a lot of
- 12:40Speaker 2: those guys don't really do much of anything on an
- 12:43Speaker 2: official mound. They'll play in bridge league, they'll work out,
- 12:46Speaker 2: they'll do all these things. But at this point you
- 12:50Speaker 2: look at like Chase Burns from last year's draft, who
- 12:52Speaker 2: went two overall, but a similar type of background of
- 12:56Speaker 2: you know, front of the rotation, college starter and he's
- 12:59Speaker 2: in that you know that reds rotation by.
- 13:01Speaker 3: The All Star break of the next year.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I do think nowadays week nine of the top ten
- 13:06Speaker 2: college players drafted in the twenty three draft are in
- 13:09Speaker 2: the big leagues. Now you know, we've already had numerous
- 13:12Speaker 2: multiple players in the top fifteen picks last year who
- 13:14Speaker 2: were in the big leagues. I do think it does
- 13:16Speaker 2: change a little bit your mindset. If you're the Cardinals
- 13:20Speaker 2: going into this offseason, and I would assume that they
- 13:23Speaker 2: think next year, however, this goes over the next sick
- 13:26Speaker 2: you said ten days, whether they're in it for the
- 13:28Speaker 2: rest of the year, or saying, Okay, we've taken a
- 13:31Speaker 2: step forward, but next year's the year. I would assume
- 13:33Speaker 2: that next year they're in Cardinals fans I think would
- 13:36Speaker 2: really hope that the next year is like, Okay, this
- 13:39Speaker 2: dip this rebuild, whatever you want to call it, is
- 13:42Speaker 2: now over. I do think that drafting Liam Doyle and
- 13:46Speaker 2: having that fifth pick, that having that pick that you
- 13:48Speaker 2: could do this with and in comparison to picking where
- 13:51Speaker 2: the Cardinals were supposed to pick, kind of may change
- 13:55Speaker 2: their free agent strategy because whether I don't think you
- 13:58Speaker 2: would expect Liam Doyd'll be up on opening day by
- 14:01Speaker 2: any stretch, but if you said, oh, we feel like
- 14:04Speaker 2: that one of our biggest needs going into this year
- 14:07Speaker 2: is a starter with swing and miss stuff. As Randy
- 14:11Speaker 2: said there, those are very expensive, and now the Cardinals
- 14:15Speaker 2: can say, well, we do think that we might get fifteen,
- 14:18Speaker 2: we might get twenty starts out of Liam Doyle potentially.
- 14:21Speaker 3: In that role.
- 14:22Speaker 2: That kind of opens it up to say, hey, we
- 14:24Speaker 2: can kind of allocate our free agent resources somewhere else
- 14:29Speaker 2: a little bit in a way that you couldn't have
- 14:31Speaker 2: if you know, again, I think there's a lot of
- 14:33Speaker 2: scenarios we had it where maybe Eli Willetts would have
- 14:35Speaker 2: been the pick, and that could have been a very
- 14:36Speaker 2: good pick at pick five, but that would not have
- 14:39Speaker 2: affected your next your twenty twenty six plans if you're
- 14:42Speaker 2: the Cardinals in any way, shape or form. You wouldn't
- 14:44Speaker 2: say we drafted Eli Willets, so we don't need to
- 14:46Speaker 2: do anything free agency. Liam Doyle may change your plans
- 14:49Speaker 2: for free agency a little bit because you can say
- 14:52Speaker 2: that you think that he will potentially pitch for them
- 14:54Speaker 2: next year.
- 14:55Speaker 1: And I think that's why fans are so excited about
- 14:57Speaker 1: this pick, not just because of the one oh one
- 14:59Speaker 1: or because he's has a Chris Carpenter esque reaction time
- 15:02Speaker 1: on the mound. We talked to Liam Doyle on Sunday
- 15:04Speaker 1: night and he said, you know, he's ready to go now.
- 15:07Speaker 1: He's ready to jump into game action now. And I
- 15:08Speaker 1: think that really fired up Cardinals fans, knowing that someone
- 15:11Speaker 1: with such a prestigious pick could be much closer to
- 15:14Speaker 1: the majors. And I've ran into some player development guys
- 15:16Speaker 1: Sunday night leaving the ballpark and they were just fired
- 15:19Speaker 1: up about this pick. I'm really excited to see what
- 15:22Speaker 1: new director of pitching, Matt Pierpont can do with Liam
- 15:24Speaker 1: Doyle's arsenal. And of course, you know, Flow has not
- 15:27Speaker 1: decided where Liam Doyle will start. Maybe Double A will see,
- 15:31Speaker 1: but he does project to be on that track similar
- 15:33Speaker 1: to a Paul Skiing skimilar to a Chase Burns and
- 15:36Speaker 1: for Cardinals fans who have not had a lot to
- 15:38Speaker 1: look forward to in terms of the farm system panning out,
- 15:41Speaker 1: all of a sudden you have Liam Doyle and JJ
- 15:43Speaker 1: Weatherholt knocking on the door and you're playing a lot
- 15:45Speaker 1: better about your farm system.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Oh and you should because again JJ weatherhold, I would expect,
- 15:50Speaker 2: you know, it's not crazy to think if there's a
- 15:52Speaker 2: need and there's an opportunity that he could be up
- 15:55Speaker 2: at some point in the second half the year this year,
- 15:56Speaker 2: which again that's not you know, a while back that
- 15:59Speaker 2: would have been Wow, that's crazy fast. Now you look
- 16:01Speaker 2: at it and say, well, that's following the in the
- 16:04Speaker 2: on the heels of multiple picks ahead of him, multiple
- 16:07Speaker 2: picks behind him in that draft who have already reached
- 16:10Speaker 2: Nick Kurt's I think Nick Kurts has seventeen home runs
- 16:12Speaker 2: right now for the A's, which is crazy. You know,
- 16:15Speaker 2: Christian Moors is you know, he's hurt right now, but
- 16:17Speaker 2: he's up with the Angels, like there are multiple hitters up,
- 16:19Speaker 2: there are multiple pitchers up. But the other thing I
- 16:21Speaker 2: would say with that is, I don't think this will happen.
- 16:24Speaker 2: But let's say that the Cardinals are in it right,
- 16:27Speaker 2: Let's say that the Cardinals do make a run here.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I don't think in any scenario. Again, I would expect
- 16:34Speaker 2: that Liam Doyle threw a lot.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Of innings this year.
- 16:36Speaker 2: But if you said, if healthy and if they don't
- 16:40Speaker 2: feel it's detrimental to him, I would not say that
- 16:43Speaker 2: Liam Doyle is ready to help the big league club
- 16:46Speaker 2: in September October as a starter. But if you said,
- 16:49Speaker 2: a la Garrett Crochet who did this a little bit
- 16:52Speaker 2: for the White Sox in twenty twenty, also happened to
- 16:54Speaker 2: be a Tennessee first round pick, first round pick out
- 16:58Speaker 2: of Tennessee, all this, you know, if you said, he's
- 17:01Speaker 2: ready to do that role, and we think that it's
- 17:03Speaker 2: not going to harm his development, we think he's healthy
- 17:05Speaker 2: enough to do this, all these things. He's ready to
- 17:08Speaker 2: do that like he could if you said, hey, I'm
- 17:11Speaker 2: not saying he's going to You're talking about small samples.
- 17:13Speaker 2: He could always get rocked, he could always struggle through
- 17:15Speaker 2: the strikes. New ball, because the college ball and the
- 17:18Speaker 2: big league ball and the minor league ball are all
- 17:20Speaker 2: three different baseballs.
- 17:21Speaker 3: All these things.
- 17:22Speaker 2: But if you said, what would one hundred miles an
- 17:25Speaker 2: hour and a change up look like? You know in
- 17:28Speaker 2: the pen, you would say, I think he could probably
- 17:30Speaker 2: get some outs. Now, I don't think that'll happen. But
- 17:34Speaker 2: that's the kind of talent we're talking about here.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And that's why I think Cardinals fans are so excited.
- 17:39Speaker 1: The organization is so excited, and Liam Doyle was super
- 17:42Speaker 1: excited to talk to I mean, when you're excited to
- 17:44Speaker 1: talk to the media, you have to be excited about something.
- 17:46Speaker 2: So but again, but Lee, like you said, Liam is
- 17:49Speaker 2: a fired up dude.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Yes, and I think Cardinals fans will look forward to
- 17:53Speaker 1: seeing that because it's just been a little stale over
- 17:56Speaker 1: the last two years, the same prototype of pitcher taking
- 17:59Speaker 1: them ount every day. Not a lot of guys willing
- 18:01Speaker 1: to express themselves outside of the Cardinal way, if you will,
- 18:05Speaker 1: And at a time where the game is changing and
- 18:07Speaker 1: the Cardinals are trying to modernize, I don't think there's
- 18:09Speaker 1: a better pick out there that encompasses that more than
- 18:12Speaker 1: Liam Doyle. So very exciting, a very exciting pick, and
- 18:15Speaker 1: exciting times ahead for the Cardinals' farm system. We'll take
- 18:18Speaker 1: a look at the draft overall first, though, a very

- 19:26Speaker 1: All right, So, looking at the Cardinals twenty twenty five draft. Overall,
- 19:30Speaker 1: they selected twenty one total players, twenty collegiate players, and
- 19:34Speaker 1: just one high school prep player. That's the second year
- 19:36Speaker 1: in a row they have done so. By position, that's
- 19:39Speaker 1: twelve pitchers, five in builders, three outfielders, and one catcher.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Of the twelve pitchers, two are left handed, a heavy
- 19:47Speaker 1: mix of the University of Tennessee guys, including their or
- 19:50Speaker 1: their number three pick, Tanner Franklin JJ. When you look
- 19:53Speaker 1: about this draft the first time with the new regime,
- 19:56Speaker 1: and maybe you're kind of seeing the Hein Bloom imprint here.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Of course, Randy Flores has been this out any director
- 20:00Speaker 1: for forever and has done a nice job. What do
- 20:04Speaker 1: you see that's different about this year's draft class?
- 20:07Speaker 3: You hit on the thing.
- 20:09Speaker 2: If you their top two pictures they took, you would say,
- 20:15Speaker 2: I mean they both touch one hundred miles an hour
- 20:17Speaker 2: and they both miss bats. That's not like something Again,
- 20:20Speaker 2: I will go back to that's not something about the
- 20:22Speaker 2: Cardinals said no, no, no, we do not want pitchers who
- 20:25Speaker 2: miss bats. But it is something that seems like they
- 20:27Speaker 2: steered into that trait a little bit more this year
- 20:31Speaker 2: than they have in past years. I would also say
- 20:34Speaker 2: very much, and I don't think this is that unusual,
- 20:36Speaker 2: but it is kind of a portfolio approach as you
- 20:38Speaker 2: would expect to for almost any draft, which is, okay,
- 20:42Speaker 2: we just talked about Liam Doyle is the close to
- 20:45Speaker 2: the big leagues, should move pretty quickly, but also high
- 20:49Speaker 2: ceiling picture that you get fifth overall. Ryan Mitchell is
- 20:53Speaker 2: kind of their their second pick to fifth pick of
- 20:55Speaker 2: the draft. Kind of the opposite of that, This is
- 20:58Speaker 2: a guy who probably going to take some time. That
- 21:01Speaker 2: is kind of more what we think about with the
- 21:02Speaker 2: draft when you say, well, what's his ETA twenty eight,
- 21:06Speaker 2: twenty nine, if it goes right, like that's not a
- 21:08Speaker 2: crazy thing for a talented high school a player who's
- 21:12Speaker 2: you know, played shortstop in high school. Looks like I
- 21:15Speaker 2: think with the Cardinals more likely and the expectation has
- 21:18Speaker 2: long been more likely a center fielder long term. To
- 21:20Speaker 2: go back to what I know that some people ask, well,
- 21:23Speaker 2: but that's where Victor Scott plays.
- 21:25Speaker 3: It's like, yes, this.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Is a guy who, if everything goes right and everything
- 21:30Speaker 2: breaks right, will be arriving at about the time that
- 21:32Speaker 2: Victor Scott is in year four or five of his
- 21:35Speaker 2: big league contract. You know, he'll be an arbitration. All
- 21:38Speaker 2: that options are always good. That's he's not gonna This
- 21:42Speaker 2: is not something where Victor Scott blocks.
- 21:43Speaker 3: This guy.
- 21:43Speaker 2: He's a long ways away, but he is a high upside.
- 21:46Speaker 2: There's a lot to like here. There's a lot of
- 21:49Speaker 2: upside and talent. You know, could be an up the middle,
- 21:51Speaker 2: impact defender who also hits. There's some power as well.
- 21:55Speaker 2: But that's that you have balanced right there. You've done
- 21:58Speaker 2: a very good balance of I've got college pitcher who
- 22:01Speaker 2: should move fast. I've got the high school guy who,
- 22:03Speaker 2: if it all breaks right, could be you know, an
- 22:06Speaker 2: elite prospect. But there's definitely risk there. That's why he
- 22:09Speaker 2: was there at pick fifty five. We talk about Tanner Franklenx,
- 22:12Speaker 2: that that's a I think that's probably a pure reliever,
- 22:15Speaker 2: but one.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Who the stuff.
- 22:18Speaker 2: You know, I know that when you talk about guys
- 22:21Speaker 2: who throw, relievers who throw one hundred plus, you can
- 22:24Speaker 2: talk about delivery and all that.
- 22:25Speaker 3: A lot of.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Times those guys, if they stay healthy, which is obviously
- 22:29Speaker 2: a risk, do figure out something. I use the example
- 22:32Speaker 2: too often now. I think of Justin Martinez with the Diamondbacks,
- 22:35Speaker 2: who if you ask two years ago describe Justin Martinez,
- 22:39Speaker 2: it would be he throws really hard one oh.
- 22:41Speaker 3: One, one oh two.
- 22:43Speaker 2: He doesn't have a whole lot of idea where it's going,
- 22:44Speaker 2: and he doesn't get a lot of outs with it
- 22:46Speaker 2: because he doesn't know where it's going. Then the light
- 22:48Speaker 2: bulb clicks on, and you know what. There's That's what
- 22:52Speaker 2: developed him is It's not always linear, but when it
- 22:54Speaker 2: does click on, if you throw one oh one, one
- 22:57Speaker 2: oh two, if you throw that.
- 22:59Speaker 3: I've talked to a lot of.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Different organizations now who say, if you have that kind
- 23:03Speaker 2: of arm speed he already has a slider in Frank's case,
- 23:06Speaker 2: but you're gonna have a second pitch.
- 23:08Speaker 3: We almost we can't.
- 23:09Speaker 2: It's almost impossible that we will fail you developmentally that
- 23:13Speaker 2: if you can throw a hundred, we will not figure
- 23:14Speaker 2: out whether it's some kind of second pitch to go
- 23:17Speaker 2: with that.
- 23:18Speaker 3: You have those two pitches.
- 23:19Speaker 2: If you can throw the strikes, you can help a
- 23:21Speaker 2: big league bullpen in some way. And then after that,
- 23:24Speaker 2: like I said, we did kind of go back and forth.
- 23:26Speaker 2: We have you know, Jack Gervich, who's kind of a
- 23:29Speaker 2: you know, a productive first baseman. Okay, that's not the
- 23:32Speaker 2: sexiest profile, you know for a college first baseman. But
- 23:36Speaker 2: then you go, I'm I'm a sucker for the sixth
- 23:39Speaker 2: round pick who we just added to our BA five
- 23:43Speaker 2: hundred right before the draft. Matthew Bmura is a center
- 23:46Speaker 2: fielder out of Hawaii who has some of the best
- 23:49Speaker 2: contact skills. Like when we talk about having a variety
- 23:52Speaker 2: of traits here, Mura doesn't have a ton of power,
- 23:56Speaker 2: but he's performed at Hawaii, He's performed in the Cape
- 23:58Speaker 2: Cod League at and up the middle defender. You know,
- 24:02Speaker 2: can Ron can play center and another center fielder here.
- 24:05Speaker 2: But the big thing is is he's a guy who
- 24:08Speaker 2: does not swing and miss, especially on pitches in the zone.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Some of the best swinging miss skills, you know, back
- 24:15Speaker 2: to ball skills, I should say, in college baseball this year.
- 24:18Speaker 2: So you're adding him, you've got kind of now this
- 24:20Speaker 2: wide or ray because like if you said, well, why
- 24:22Speaker 2: did they go? You know, someone asked, why did they
- 24:24Speaker 2: go to center fielders. There, if Mitchell all works, it's
- 24:29Speaker 2: a impact. You know, I can he can provide power,
- 24:33Speaker 2: he can provide speed, he can provide hitting ability. Mirror
- 24:36Speaker 2: is more of like you're hoping to hit a single there.
- 24:38Speaker 2: He's not going to hit a lot of doubles or triples,
- 24:41Speaker 2: but you're saying there it may be a fourth outfielder
- 24:43Speaker 2: type who can play center field, can play in the corners.
- 24:47Speaker 2: If you bring him up in this if he's at
- 24:48Speaker 2: that in the seventh then and you're like, he's not
- 24:50Speaker 2: going to strike out, He's going to put the ball
- 24:52Speaker 2: in play, he's going to advance the runner. Those kind
- 24:54Speaker 2: of traits kind of those two can kind of compliment
- 24:56Speaker 2: each other very well, and that's.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Super valuable as the Cardinals are learning with the the
- 25:00Speaker 1: very limited bench that they have yet again this year,
- 25:02Speaker 1: you're a great story though. I believe he established himself
- 25:04Speaker 1: playing in a sand lot league in Hawaii. Just super exciting.
- 25:07Speaker 1: That was one of the names that multiple scouts and
- 25:09Speaker 1: agents texted me about. Just again, a very exciting time
- 25:13Speaker 1: in the organization. And you think about how this organization
- 25:16Speaker 1: was run in years prior. The Player Development Group, Draft,
- 25:21Speaker 1: player Performance they were all kind of sectioned off in
- 25:23Speaker 1: their own separate areas. This year, you're seeing a lot
- 25:26Speaker 1: of collaboration between the two, and that is I think
- 25:29Speaker 1: what successful organizations do really well is they're all working together.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Because yes, you have your drafting guys, you have your
- 25:35Speaker 1: drafting department, your scouting apartment. They go and identify the talent,
- 25:38Speaker 1: but that doesn't mean anything if you don't have a
- 25:40Speaker 1: player development system that can bolster that talent and develop them.
- 25:44Speaker 1: That's in their job. Then when you tie in player performance,
- 25:46Speaker 1: you get kind of the three headed monster that the Cardinals.
- 25:49Speaker 1: We know this. They're hoping to come back to being
- 25:51Speaker 1: a draft and development club. The way that they handled
- 25:53Speaker 1: this draft is I think the first time that fans
- 25:55Speaker 1: can see in real time how that works. And you
- 25:58Speaker 1: know what, we don't give enough up to scouts. They
- 26:00Speaker 1: are absolutely behind the whole background of the organization. So
- 26:03Speaker 1: shout out scouts, Dirt Kenny, and TC Calhoun, they were
- 26:06Speaker 1: all over this draft. TC Calhoun the signing scout for
- 26:08Speaker 1: Liam Doyle. I think when you're looking at the Cardinals
- 26:12Speaker 1: organization from an overall minor league farm system standpoint, we're
- 26:16Speaker 1: starting to see kind of the high bloom effect and
- 26:18Speaker 1: it's really encouraging for an organization that vastly needed a revamp.
- 26:21Speaker 1: So this draft allows us to see a little bit
- 26:23Speaker 1: more as to insight on how that's going.
- 26:26Speaker 2: I would just note with that when you said that
- 26:27Speaker 2: about the kind of the more interdepartment collaboration, if you
- 26:32Speaker 2: ask me over the years, you know, people say, what's
- 26:36Speaker 2: the Rays secret sauce? And I think the Rays don't
- 26:39Speaker 2: have a one plan. They like have a plan for
- 26:41Speaker 2: this year and next year may be very different. But
- 26:43Speaker 2: if you said one thing that does very much stand
- 26:45Speaker 2: out with the Rays. Know a lot of RAISE officials
- 26:48Speaker 2: have covered the race for us for years. They very
- 26:50Speaker 2: much there is not something where it's like you're on
- 26:53Speaker 2: your You're on your island.
- 26:54Speaker 3: I'm on my island. It is collaborative.
- 26:56Speaker 2: You will see, you know, if you have scouts there,
- 26:59Speaker 2: they will be in their clubhouse talking to their minor league,
- 27:02Speaker 2: you know, coaches and all they're working together you on
- 27:05Speaker 2: the player performance. That all of that is very cohesive,
- 27:08Speaker 2: and that is I believe a multiplier for these things.
- 27:12Speaker 2: I don't want to go too far on this, but
- 27:14Speaker 2: I do remember the extreme example the other way, this
- 27:16Speaker 2: is years ago now, but we remember. I remember there
- 27:18Speaker 2: was an Orioles draft where we talked to the oriol
- 27:20Speaker 2: This is year. This is like twenty years ago almost now,
- 27:23Speaker 2: but there was an Oriols draft where we were talking
- 27:24Speaker 2: to the oriol scouting department and one of their top
- 27:27Speaker 2: picks and they're like, we think he's going to be
- 27:28Speaker 2: a great catcher.
- 27:29Speaker 3: I know he's an outfielder.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Now, but we think he's going to be a really
- 27:32Speaker 2: got all the tools to be a great catcher.
- 27:35Speaker 3: And then we talk to their.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Player development side and we say, so, are y'all going to,
- 27:39Speaker 2: you know, convert him to a catcher, And they said, no,
- 27:41Speaker 2: he's an outfielder for us. The two sides hadn't talked
- 27:44Speaker 2: to each other. So the scouting side drafted a guy
- 27:47Speaker 2: because the reason they draft him is they thought he
- 27:48Speaker 2: was a catcher, and the player development side says, no, no,
- 27:51Speaker 2: we think he's an outfielder.
- 27:52Speaker 3: You can't have that happening.
- 27:54Speaker 2: You've got to have the two sides like, okay, this
- 27:57Speaker 2: is why we drafted this guy. And again you need
- 27:59Speaker 2: to know all so departments should know what their strengths
- 28:02Speaker 2: and weaknesses are. Not everyone can do, you can't do
- 28:05Speaker 2: everything best in class, right, you would love to, but
- 28:07Speaker 2: no one else, No one can except for maybe you know, okay,
- 28:10Speaker 2: maybe the Dodgers can throw enough resources.
- 28:12Speaker 3: I don't, but you you.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Know, some teams are great at developing change ups. Some
- 28:17Speaker 2: teams are great at developing breaking balls. Some teams are
- 28:20Speaker 2: great as saying if you have trouble getting left, he's
- 28:22Speaker 2: out of the right hand, and we're going to figure
- 28:23Speaker 2: that out for you know what you're good at, and
- 28:26Speaker 2: then the scouting department can provide players. So then like,
- 28:30Speaker 2: if you're great at developing change ups and you say,
- 28:34Speaker 2: this guy doesn't have a change up, that's why he's
- 28:36Speaker 2: going to be available in the fourth round because he
- 28:38Speaker 2: can't get left. He's out because he don't have a
- 28:40Speaker 2: change up. And you're like, oh no, no, we can do that. Okay,
- 28:43Speaker 2: then that's the perfect guy to fit with that. But
- 28:45Speaker 2: if you say, you know what, we're really struggle with
- 28:47Speaker 2: developing plate discipline skills in this hypothetic organization, then don't
- 28:51Speaker 2: draft guys. You're like, well, the big thing is we've
- 28:53Speaker 2: got to teach them plate this one, know your strengths
- 28:55Speaker 2: and weaknesses and let everyone work together. That's something that's again,
- 28:59Speaker 2: that's something that I'm blue very much. I would say
- 29:01Speaker 2: when he was with the race, it was very much emphasized, and.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I think that's music to Cardinals fanziers, and I think
- 29:06Speaker 1: there's a lot of rightful optimism about the direction this
- 29:10Speaker 1: team is heading. It might take a couple of years,
- 29:12Speaker 1: and I know the primary focus will be on the
- 29:14Speaker 1: next ten days, but when you're thinking about how this
- 29:16Speaker 1: organization is being rebuilt, I know we're not allowed to
- 29:19Speaker 1: use the word rebuild, but excuse me if you will.
- 29:22Speaker 1: There's a lot to look forward to and a lot
- 29:23Speaker 1: of new and different ideas that I think will impact
- 29:26Speaker 1: the major league rosters sooner rather than later. JJ, thank
