- 0:20Speaker 1: Seth Morris, Hayden, Sam and Krinn Schneider, Logan Dove, Corey
- 0:23Speaker 1: Caulkins and Alyssa Smith. This is a ten round quiz
- 0:26Speaker 1: show with questions from meat eaters four verticals which are hunting, fishing,
- 0:30Speaker 1: conservation and cooking, and there is a prize. Meat Eater

- 0:37Speaker 1: the winners choosing and each week here on Meat Eater
- 0:40Speaker 1: Trivia we reveal a new stat This week we're looking
- 0:44Speaker 1: at what I considered to be the worst game of
- 0:46Speaker 1: trivia we've ever played, which is based on player performance.
- 0:50Speaker 1: In episode two eight seven, which was our second ever
- 0:54Speaker 1: game of trivia, Steve one with four correct answers. In
- 0:58Speaker 1: second place was a tie between Karen Clay and Janice
- 1:02Speaker 1: with two correct answers. The average score in episode two
- 1:06Speaker 1: eighties seven was two and we actually had five questions
- 1:10Speaker 1: were not a single person got the right answer. Now,
- 1:13Speaker 1: not blaming the competitors for this poor performance. I'm blaming myself.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I simply made that round too hard and have corrected
- 1:21Speaker 1: for it. And the Shelby index on that one, well,
- 1:23Speaker 1: that was before we had it, so I don't I
- 1:25Speaker 1: don't recall what it was. But in the forty five
- 1:28Speaker 1: episodes since we've had zero games where the winner got
- 1:31Speaker 1: four correct answers and just two games where the winner
- 1:34Speaker 1: got five, you should ask this question that everyone missed
- 1:38Speaker 1: and see if we got smarter. You know, I've thought
- 1:39Speaker 1: about it, but the problem is some folks weren't here
- 1:42Speaker 1: for that episode. Other ones were, so I've I've considered
- 1:45Speaker 1: the idea, but I thought it would be uh well one,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I don't think it'd be real fun for the audience,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and too I think would be on film saying like
- 1:51Speaker 1: not part of the game, just to warm things up.
- 1:53Speaker 1: What do you what do you feel? What are you
- 1:55Speaker 1: shooting for? What do you feel is the perfect winnings
- 1:58Speaker 1: seven or eight? I'm very satisfied if it's between six
- 2:00Speaker 1: and nine. If somebody gets a ten, which has happened
- 2:02Speaker 1: three times, I may be made that round too easy.
- 2:05Speaker 1: If somebody gets a five, I made it too different.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I got ten twice, so six to nine. I think
- 2:11Speaker 1: is the sweet spot. I've done my job. Well, if
- 2:14Speaker 1: that's the winning score, we have some housekeeping to get
- 2:17Speaker 1: to before we play today's game. On episode that was
- 2:21Speaker 1: that was a stat. That was a stat the worst
- 2:23Speaker 1: trivia game ever? Four correct answers one a stat like normber,
- 2:29Speaker 1: your stats wouldn't have involved some sort of math and stuff.
- 2:33Speaker 1: That's like an observation. We were are Our stat compiling
- 2:36Speaker 1: is going through a major overhaul right now. We're gonna
- 2:39Speaker 1: have some great stats coming up the next few months.
- 2:42Speaker 1: But I'll be honest with intern to like keep track
- 2:45Speaker 1: of stats. No, No, but that wasn't a stack. They're like,
- 2:50Speaker 1: that was a factoid. Yes, is like a trend. Factoid
- 2:54Speaker 1: is being kind as the observation one time someone got four.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You'll have to settle for an observation on this episode.
- 3:02Speaker 1: We've got some good stuff coming in the future now.
- 3:05Speaker 1: An episode three two, I asked what state has the
- 3:08Speaker 1: most mountains with an elevation of fourteen thousand feet? Bro,
- 3:12Speaker 1: you're gonna have some feedback on this housekeeping that doesn't
- 3:14Speaker 1: directly pertend to you, but I'm gonna ask you to
- 3:16Speaker 1: hold it until the end. Okay, Now, when I read
- 3:19Speaker 1: the answers. Stephen Corin gave me hell about how I
- 3:22Speaker 1: pronounced the state where Denver is the capital. Play the clip, Phil,
- 3:27Speaker 1: go ahead and review your answers. We have steeves like.
- 3:29Speaker 1: The more I think about it, He's saying Colorado, Meggie
- 3:33Speaker 1: sang Alaska, Corey saying Colorado, Hayden saying Colorado. Chess, you're
- 3:36Speaker 1: saying Colorado, Marge saying Colorado, and Corin saying Colorado. They
- 3:40Speaker 1: got it. The correct answer is Colorado. Can you maybe
- 3:43Speaker 1: when you go through the edit, Phil, can you maybe
- 3:45Speaker 1: have him say Colorado. Here, Here's here's one you can
- 3:50Speaker 1: use Colorado. Got it? Just feel it, you know what
- 3:54Speaker 1: I mean? Of course, yeah, I'll do that well. In ten,
- 3:58Speaker 1: Channel nine and b C News covered this very subject.
- 4:02Speaker 1: They interviewed Rich Sandoval, a linguist from Metro State University
- 4:07Speaker 1: in Denver, who said there are five common pronunciations, but
- 4:11Speaker 1: two are the most popular. Play the clip, Phil, but
- 4:14Speaker 1: the dominant pronunciations highlight Colorado's clash between natives and newcomers.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Locals will say, well, of course it's Colorado. That's how
- 4:22Speaker 1: I've always said that I grew up with Colorado. That's
- 4:24Speaker 1: that's what we say. It sounds right. It's our state.
- 4:28Speaker 1: We have the right to decide and and to tell
- 4:30Speaker 1: you how to say. You're the new ones, right. Newcomers
- 4:33Speaker 1: are more likely to hew closer to the Spanish pronunciation colorado.
- 4:37Speaker 1: You don't say avocado, right, so it should be colorado
- 4:40Speaker 1: like avocado, like tostado right. Sandoval says that's a larger
- 4:44Speaker 1: trend in language practiced by people who think they're better educated.
- 4:47Speaker 1: He sees this shoeazing out, but the most recent native one.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I don't know if the Colorado thing will ever disappear,
- 4:55Speaker 1: because it is a marker of insider status. But at
- 4:58Speaker 1: the same time, for the those locals who fashion themselves
- 5:02Speaker 1: as being highly educated and that kind of thing, there's
- 5:05Speaker 1: going to be some pressure on them to say Colorado.
- 5:07Speaker 1: We'll see what happens in the future. Now, that's the
- 5:11Speaker 1: stupidest thing I've ever heard. Now. Sandoval went on to
- 5:14Speaker 1: say that it's not his job as a linguist to
- 5:16Speaker 1: decide which version is right. He's more interested in why
- 5:20Speaker 1: people think they're right. So you could use the version
- 5:23Speaker 1: that me and the locals use colorado, or you could
- 5:26Speaker 1: use the version that Steve and elitist tourists use Colorado
- 5:32Speaker 1: now normally I feel like Spencer says a lot of
- 5:35Speaker 1: words wrong, but I think he's got it right here. Okay, now, Brodie,
- 5:38Speaker 1: what are your bona fides on this subject? Well? I
- 5:40Speaker 1: lived there forever? How how long it's forever? Over twenty
- 5:44Speaker 1: years over and during that twenty years you were often
- 5:48Speaker 1: guiding folks from oddest state, right, Yeah, So what would
- 5:52Speaker 1: you say the local said versus what you would hear.
- 5:55Speaker 1: It's something I ever paid any attention to be like.
- 5:58Speaker 1: It was not like, oh that's wrong. Like if Steve
- 6:01Speaker 1: said Colorado, I don't even know that it would. What's
- 6:05Speaker 1: John Denver say Rocky Moon Colorado? No, not, Yes, let's
- 6:13Speaker 1: play the Rocky Mountain. This is a big area of
- 6:17Speaker 1: contention with Oregon as well. I can tell you from
- 6:19Speaker 1: the East coast. If you say Oregon, Illinois and Missouri
- 6:24Speaker 1: Oregon is wrong. What about that Flying Burrito Brothers song
- 6:27Speaker 1: that hey, Colorado, it's not so long there? That's that's
- 6:31Speaker 1: a famous I think that whatever John Denver says goes,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and if you play that, I'll I'll go with that.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Next episode we will find out how John Denver suthink
- 6:42Speaker 1: he might say it like the locals. Man he was.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I ran in him one time in a bar and Jackson, wy, wow,
- 6:50Speaker 1: was he hammered? Oh yeah, you know he passed away
- 6:53Speaker 1: to plane plane wreck off Big Sir him in the
- 6:57Speaker 1: Big Bopper he guid big Sir he died in a
- 7:02Speaker 1: plane wreck him and uh buddy Buddy Holly. Yeah. Well,
- 7:06Speaker 1: all kinds of people. So the Ted Stevens, I think
- 7:09Speaker 1: I don't know that person, Jose, And with that water
- 7:16Speaker 1: onto the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil, Look,
- 7:21Speaker 1: I need to know what I staying to win everything.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I'm saying, just tend to win everything. Suckers. I was
- 7:37Speaker 1: gonna change that to suck it, Brodie, that'd be improper.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Question one. The topic is conservation, and as always, this
- 7:45Speaker 1: is multiple choice, and this first great question comes to
- 7:48Speaker 1: us via Riley Nelson. If you have a question you
- 7:51Speaker 1: think is right for Meat Eat to trivia, you can
- 7:53Speaker 1: send it to trivia at the meat eater dot com.
- 7:57Speaker 1: What famous writer son once served as a fishing game
- 8:01Speaker 1: commissioner in Idaho? Is it Ernest Hemingway, Dr Seuss, Charles Dickens,
- 8:07Speaker 1: or William Faulkner. Brody knew before I even gave the choices.
- 8:12Speaker 1: What famous writer's son once served as a fishing game
- 8:17Speaker 1: commissioner in Idaho? Your choices are Ernest Hemingway, Dr Seuss,
- 8:23Speaker 1: Charles Dickens, or William Faulkner. This person's son served as
- 8:29Speaker 1: a fishing game commissioner in Idaho. Is anybody else as
- 8:33Speaker 1: confident as Brody is? No? No? Could you read it
- 8:37Speaker 1: one more time? Ernest Hemingway, Dr Seuss, Charles Dickens, or
- 8:42Speaker 1: William Faulkner, Steve, how confident you feeling? I mean, I'm
- 8:47Speaker 1: not not that confident? And now I'm rattled for the
- 8:50Speaker 1: whole game because Brody looked all cocky. He may not
- 8:55Speaker 1: even know it, he was just doing that the optics
- 8:58Speaker 1: does everybody cocky? It's now I'm rattled for the whole game.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying Hemingway,
- 9:07Speaker 1: Logan sang, Faulkner, Hayden saying Dr Seuss, Brodie sang Hemingway,
- 9:13Speaker 1: Alyssa saying, Faulkner, Krinn sang Hemingway. She talked. She crossed
- 9:18Speaker 1: out the other three choices, and she wrote out Corey
- 9:22Speaker 1: sang Hemingway and said saying Hemingway. The correct answer is
- 9:27Speaker 1: Ernest Hemingway. It seemed too obvious. He shot himself there. Yeah,
- 9:33Speaker 1: he lived in Jack Hadley Hemingway was a fly fisherman
- 9:38Speaker 1: and novelist, just like his dad. Ernest Jack served as
- 9:42Speaker 1: an Idaho Fish and Game commissioner from nineteen seventy one
- 9:46Speaker 1: to seventy seven. He was instrumental in introducing catch and
- 9:50Speaker 1: release regulations on some of the state's best trout waters.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I think his granddaughter might live here. His his grandson
- 9:57Speaker 1: writes children's books. Now, how do you know that? Yeah,
- 10:02Speaker 1: years ago here in town, I had a girlfriend who
- 10:04Speaker 1: hung out with like a grand kid or something like that.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I remember he had um zebra hide rug. I was
- 10:13Speaker 1: pretty jealous of. Question to the topic is cooking. Maine
- 10:20Speaker 1: is famous for this type of hot dog, which shares
- 10:23Speaker 1: its name with a saltwater fish. Maine is famous for
- 10:29Speaker 1: this type of hot dog, which shares its name with
- 10:32Speaker 1: a saltwater fish. Brody with the quickest answer in the room, Brody,
- 10:37Speaker 1: do you know this one? I'm se okay. Maine is
- 10:45Speaker 1: famous for this type of hot dog, which shares its
- 10:48Speaker 1: name with a saltwater fish. Logan also had a quick answer,
- 10:52Speaker 1: you know that Logan's got it. The rest of the
- 10:56Speaker 1: room is pretty stumped. We get the Shelby index. Oh
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm sorry. The Shelby index for this game of trivia
- 11:04Speaker 1: is a three, so our winner should get six. It's
- 11:07Speaker 1: a tougher batch of questions, Steve, how you doing? Not
- 11:12Speaker 1: good man? I mean I got that last one. Do
- 11:15Speaker 1: you have a saltwater fish written down? See? I got
- 11:18Speaker 1: something totally stupid written down. Hayden scribbling? Is it? Is
- 11:22Speaker 1: it like? Is the saltwater? Is it like a vernacular
- 11:24Speaker 1: for the saltwater fish? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 11:28Speaker 1: We have Steve saying red, Logan saying red snapper, Hayden
- 11:32Speaker 1: saying kipper, Brody saying red snapper. List is saying hell abit,
- 11:36Speaker 1: Karen saying corn dog, Corey sang cod dog, Seth saying
- 11:41Speaker 1: red fish. The correct answer is red snapper. Got it?
- 11:45Speaker 1: We hadn't. He did not get it. We had Logan
- 11:49Speaker 1: and Brody get it right for I don't get it,
- 11:52Speaker 1: just for red no. No, no, well, well think about it.
- 11:55Speaker 1: That's the thing. People call them red snapper, red them too.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I was actually thinking the same and reds Well, I
- 12:04Speaker 1: got called red hots, as well as that I don't know,
- 12:07Speaker 1: I've heard that Brody had it. The red Snapper name
- 12:11Speaker 1: is based on the hot dogs neon appearance, which comes
- 12:14Speaker 1: from food coloring, and the audible snap that happens with
- 12:18Speaker 1: every bite, which comes from the natural casings. If you
- 12:21Speaker 1: want to learn how to make these delicious sausages, then
- 12:24Speaker 1: go to the meat eater dot com and check out
- 12:26Speaker 1: Wade Trunk's recipe called Venison red Snapper hot Dogs. Body
- 12:31Speaker 1: mine used to be really into sharkoo tree and sausage making.
- 12:35Speaker 1: We made hot dogs together a couple of times, and
- 12:37Speaker 1: he was saying, the biggest challenge with making a home
- 12:40Speaker 1: hot dog is the snap. Check out, Like, so, how
- 12:45Speaker 1: you know it's the density in which is packed? He said, Like,
- 12:49Speaker 1: you can't get the snap. Do you like red snappers?
- 12:53Speaker 1: M hmmm, I don't know. I mean, I've had plenty
- 12:55Speaker 1: of hot dogs that were died real red. I don't
- 12:58Speaker 1: know if that's it. Well, I'll tell you one thing,
- 13:00Speaker 1: I don't feel like sitting here watching Brody win again.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Question three. There were only two questions in the topic haunting.
- 13:08Speaker 1: This next great question comes to as via Matthew Stewart.
- 13:11Speaker 1: If you have a question. You think it's right. For
- 13:13Speaker 1: meat Eater Trivia, you can send it to trivia at
- 13:15Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com. Represented by the symbol W
- 13:20Speaker 1: on the periodic table. This element is commonly used in
- 13:24Speaker 1: shotgun pellets for turkey hunters. Represented by the symbol W
- 13:31Speaker 1: on the periodic table. This element is commonly used in
- 13:35Speaker 1: shotgun pellets for turkey hunters. A lot of thinking going
- 13:40Speaker 1: on in the room. Folks are picturing a periodic table
- 13:43Speaker 1: in their head. You got this one, seth, No, I
- 13:47Speaker 1: just wrote down. Okay, a medal that's used in turkey
- 13:51Speaker 1: shot represented by the symbol W. Brody, you know this one. Okay, No,
- 14:00Speaker 1: but but he knows turkey shells. Does everyone have an answer?
- 14:05Speaker 1: You can narrow it down. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 14:08Speaker 1: We have Steve saying tungsten, Logan saying tungsten, tungsten, tungsten,
- 14:13Speaker 1: Melyssa saying lead, Coren saying tungsten, tungsten, tungsten. They got it.
- 14:18Speaker 1: The correct answer is tungsten. Other shotgun pellet elements include lead,
- 14:24Speaker 1: which is represented by PB on the periodic table, bismuth
- 14:28Speaker 1: which is represented by b I, and copper, which is
- 14:31Speaker 1: represented by SEU. The advantage of shooting tungsten is that
- 14:35Speaker 1: it's extremely heavy and creates better penetration. Our favorite turkey
- 14:39Speaker 1: loads are Federal Premiums third degree, which gives a portion
- 14:42Speaker 1: of their sales from these shells to the National Wild
- 14:45Speaker 1: Turkey Federation. Question for the topic is public lands? Named
- 14:50Speaker 1: two of the four states that contain the Mojave Desert?
- 14:57Speaker 1: Named two of the four states that contained the Mojabbi Desert.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Brody with a very quick answer, The perfect game is
- 15:04Speaker 1: canna continue? I imagine we'll see looking for two of
- 15:09Speaker 1: the four states that contained the Mojabbi Desert. That was
- 15:13Speaker 1: kind of It's kind of a softball, right there, bro
- 15:17Speaker 1: Who was it? Jed Jed Smith? What about him? I'll
- 15:22Speaker 1: talk about it afterwards. Does he ever relation to softballs
- 15:26Speaker 1: or the Mojabi Desert? We'll talk. Does everybody have an answer?
- 15:30Speaker 1: Looking for two of the four states? If we list three,
- 15:34Speaker 1: don't you get it wrong? If you list three, that's
- 15:36Speaker 1: what happens. Let's see you list fifty. Go ahead and
- 15:43Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Steve saying California, Nevada, Logan
- 15:47Speaker 1: saying Colorado, Arizona, Hayden saying Arizona, Nevada, Brody saying Nevada, California,
- 15:53Speaker 1: Alyssa saying New Mexico, Arizona, Karin saying California, Nevada, Corey, California, Nevada,
- 16:01Speaker 1: Seth saying California, Arizona. The four states are California, Nevada, Utah,
- 16:08Speaker 1: and Arizona. So most of the room got it. A
- 16:12Speaker 1: few folks, though, H had some other states that weren't listed.
- 16:16Speaker 1: The name Mojave means beside the water in the Mojave
- 16:19Speaker 1: Tribes native language. The desert is home to species of
- 16:23Speaker 1: mammals and two thirty species of birds. The Mohave is
- 16:27Speaker 1: twenty million acres, with most of it being located in California. Now, Brodie,
- 16:31Speaker 1: what do you got? Steve will tell the story better
- 16:34Speaker 1: than me. Let's hear it's Steve. You mean that he
- 16:36Speaker 1: was the first year All American to arrive to California
- 16:39Speaker 1: by an overland travels through. They had a hell of
- 16:42Speaker 1: time through the Mohave Desert, sucking on rocks for to
- 16:46Speaker 1: like get liquid, So try to get yourself. Didn't need
- 16:49Speaker 1: like make it to a monastery or something in California.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Then they confiscated as beavers and yeah, all kinds of trouble.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Question five, the topic is fishing. What dictator had carp
- 17:02Speaker 1: his favorite food stocked in the moats around his palace?
- 17:08Speaker 1: What dictator had carp his favorite food stocked in the
- 17:13Speaker 1: moats around his palace? Nobody with an answer quite yet.
- 17:21Speaker 1: If I don't spell it right, is that I'm gonna
- 17:24Speaker 1: start taking away points when folks ask if they need
- 17:27Speaker 1: to spell it right. You never have to spell it
- 17:29Speaker 1: right unless I say you do, which has happened one
- 17:31Speaker 1: time in the history of mediator trivia. So no, Hayden,
- 17:36Speaker 1: spell it right, Steve, how you feel about this but
- 17:40Speaker 1: not bad? Okay? Does that make sense? Brody has the
- 17:45Speaker 1: perfect game going? I feel okay. I don't think I
- 17:48Speaker 1: got it, but I don't think Brody got it. Okay,
- 17:52Speaker 1: A lot to be racing, Seth without an answer, Seth,
- 17:56Speaker 1: can you just write down a dictator? Yeah, but I
- 17:58Speaker 1: ain't gonna be the right one. Go ahead and reveal
- 18:04Speaker 1: your answers. Don't say mine unless it's right. I don't
- 18:07Speaker 1: want people to think that I put that down. We
- 18:09Speaker 1: have Logan saying, what's that say? Logan? Kim jong Ill,
- 18:17Speaker 1: Brodi saying Henry the Eighth elictit without an answer, Krin
- 18:21Speaker 1: saying pulpop Corey saying Hugo Chavez seth without an answer,
- 18:26Speaker 1: and we will say Steve, Steve said Saddam Hussein. Steve
- 18:29Speaker 1: got it. Let's hear Rourke Denver told me about a
- 18:39Speaker 1: lot about catching the carp. That's so when they were
- 18:43Speaker 1: in Baghdad, he told me a lot about catching the
- 18:45Speaker 1: carp around the palace, and he said a lot of
- 18:49Speaker 1: guys where it was like game on, Like a lot
- 18:51Speaker 1: of dudes were like sweet, I could finally fish the
- 18:55Speaker 1: carp and it didn't matter what they would catch. They
- 18:58Speaker 1: just called them Saddam's bass over there, like there was
- 19:01Speaker 1: a number of different species, a lot of it was
- 19:02Speaker 1: different types of car, but everyone just called him Saddam's bass.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Eric Maddox, the army interrogator who tracked down Saddam, said
- 19:11Speaker 1: that his love of fish is actually what got him caught.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Here's what happened. Maddox talked to Saddam's chef, who told
- 19:18Speaker 1: him that grilled carp was the dictator's favorite meal. Maddox
- 19:22Speaker 1: then got intel that Saddam had a personal pond stocked
- 19:25Speaker 1: with carp, which Maddox went to at the pond, Maddox
- 19:28Speaker 1: interview a fisherman who told him where Saddam's bodyguard was hiding.
- 19:32Speaker 1: That bodyguard led him to Saddam's bunker and the rest
- 19:36Speaker 1: is history. Spider Hole. Remember that, ladies and gentlemen, we
- 19:40Speaker 1: got him. If you have a picture of you catching
- 19:43Speaker 1: uh Saddam's bass, send it to me. I'll post on Instagram.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I'd like to see that. Oh you well, there's and
- 19:49Speaker 1: I think in ros book there's a picture of Rourke
- 19:52Speaker 1: with one of Saddam's bass. Could you tell what it was? Specifically, Phil,
- 19:57Speaker 1: We're halfway through the game of trivia. This is a
- 20:00Speaker 1: scoreboard update. You have to make it on the board.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Solicita smith zero points. We got annual reviews coming up
- 20:14Speaker 1: better because Logan and Hayden have two points apiece, and
- 20:19Speaker 1: then we have Seth, Corey and Karin with three points. Yeah,
- 20:27Speaker 1: and at your first place are Brody Henderson and Stephen Ronella.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Don't worry sensors not giving me the answers this time, Stephen,
- 20:34Speaker 1: let's be looking over my shoulder. Question six. The topic
- 20:46Speaker 1: is conservation. This is our on X listener question of
- 20:49Speaker 1: the Week, which was won by Sean Doherty for sending
- 20:52Speaker 1: this great question. Sean is going to get a one
- 20:55Speaker 1: year premium subscription to on X If you want a
- 20:58Speaker 1: chance to win our listener question of the week and
- 21:00Speaker 1: send it to trivia at the meat Eater dot com.
- 21:02Speaker 1: That comes load with all of Spencer's waypoint not this winner.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Now sometimes referred to as toy deer. This is the
- 21:12Speaker 1: only subspecies of whitetail that's listed as federally endangered in America.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Brody and Steve in a competition for who can write
- 21:21Speaker 1: the answer the fastest and call it a tie. Sometimes
- 21:25Speaker 1: referred to as toy deer. This is the only subspecies
- 21:29Speaker 1: of whitetail that's listed as federally endangered in America. Hey,
- 21:35Speaker 1: don't you know this? I'm having like the same problem
- 21:39Speaker 1: that I had with Hemingway being the author. It seems
- 21:41Speaker 1: too obvious. Can't well? I thought you're gonna say that
- 21:44Speaker 1: problem where you get it wrong. I'm also Brody, did
- 21:51Speaker 1: Saddam cross your mind? Not? No, No, Steve got it?
- 21:56Speaker 1: Barren Square, he didn't, He didn't got it? Does everybody
- 22:00Speaker 1: an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 22:04Speaker 1: Steve saying keys dear, Logan saying keys, dear, Hayden saying
- 22:08Speaker 1: coves dear, CU's deer, CU's deer, Brodi's saying keys, elictit
- 22:12Speaker 1: without an answer, Karn without an answer, Corey saying CU's deer,
- 22:17Speaker 1: and Seth saying keys white tail. They got it. The
- 22:21Speaker 1: correct answer is key, dear. So you thought that we
- 22:24Speaker 1: were wait CU's dear. Yeah, but people were as hunting
- 22:28Speaker 1: cuse deer. I thought there might be like some little
- 22:31Speaker 1: population in like some corner wherever where they were like
- 22:34Speaker 1: these ones are regionally regal, Jacob, We didn't know what
- 22:38Speaker 1: the hell we were talking about. The key deer used
- 22:40Speaker 1: to range across the floor to keys, but is now
- 22:43Speaker 1: only found on a few islands. They also have the
- 22:47Speaker 1: smallest I don't know what the names are the islands.
- 22:50Speaker 1: They also happened to be the smallest subspecies of white
- 22:53Speaker 1: tail in America, with bucks weighing about sixty five pounds
- 22:57Speaker 1: and standing just over two ft tall at the shoulder.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Their population was lowest in the nineteen fifties, when just
- 23:03Speaker 1: twenty five remained, but today there are about one thousand left.
- 23:08Speaker 1: M Question seven. The topic is cooking Pike Place Fish Market,
- 23:15Speaker 1: which is famous for flying fish is located in what
- 23:18Speaker 1: American city? I think the whole room got Pike Place
- 23:29Speaker 1: Fish Market, which is famous for flying fish, is located
- 23:34Speaker 1: in what American cities? Everybody have the answer? Go ahead
- 23:39Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. Everybody got it right. The correct
- 23:43Speaker 1: answer is Seattle. I'm guessing that will be a more
- 23:46Speaker 1: challenging question for our friends in the South and in
- 23:48Speaker 1: New England and Midwest. Understandably, so it was easy for
- 23:53Speaker 1: this group of players. The Pike Place Fish Market is
- 23:56Speaker 1: world renowned for fishmongers who throw around fish prior to
- 23:59Speaker 1: round picking it. The market was near bankruptcy in the
- 24:02Speaker 1: late eighties but was saved by after appearing on Good
- 24:06Speaker 1: Morning America. Tourists then came from all around to watch
- 24:09Speaker 1: fish get hurled around the market, which now attracts ten
- 24:12Speaker 1: thousand visitors per day in the summer. Do you ever
- 24:15Speaker 1: go watch him abuse those fish, Steve when you live there? No,
- 24:18Speaker 1: I didn't. But my friend, who is a commercial salmon fisherman,
- 24:22Speaker 1: um really hates it because he says we handle fish
- 24:26Speaker 1: very gently, and he feels that it's like, uh, it's
- 24:31Speaker 1: like a black guye in the industry, disrespectful he said. Yeah.
- 24:36Speaker 1: He says like, we don't you know when the fish
- 24:38Speaker 1: is going to rigor you don't straighten it. We never
- 24:41Speaker 1: throw fish. So then you go down there and it's
- 24:44Speaker 1: the consumers one chance to look at the process, and
- 24:47Speaker 1: they're throwing fish around. He wasn't like it. You sure
- 24:50Speaker 1: certainly wouldn't see people tossing animals around for fun, right
- 24:54Speaker 1: dead ones could chickens? Yeah, I could see chicken. I'm
- 25:00Speaker 1: not saying that I hold my buddy's viewpoint. I'm saying
- 25:02Speaker 1: that was my buddy's viewpoint. On Ron Lady question eight,
- 25:06Speaker 1: the topic is deer camp. Now this is a visual question.
- 25:10Speaker 1: If you want to see what the room is seeing,
- 25:12Speaker 1: then go to Instagram and check out at Spencer Newhart.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I'll make it my most recent post. What's the category
- 25:19Speaker 1: deer camp? I didn't know that was a category. It
- 25:22Speaker 1: has been. This is a photo of me from the
- 25:25Speaker 1: late nineties with the host of a PBS slapstick comedy
- 25:29Speaker 1: show that taught outdoor skills. What was the name of
- 25:33Speaker 1: that show? Shut again. This is a photo of me
- 25:40Speaker 1: from the late nineties with the host of a PBS
- 25:44Speaker 1: slapstick comedy show that taught outdoor skills. What was the
- 25:49Speaker 1: name of that show? Corey knew this without even seeing
- 25:52Speaker 1: the photo. That's right, don't show Corey the photo. I
- 25:59Speaker 1: kind of want to see now, Stevie. This is like
- 26:03Speaker 1: somewhere deep in your brain? Is that right? Oh? Yeah?
- 26:06Speaker 1: And I even know one of the words. I think
- 26:09Speaker 1: it's um. It's like, I don't want to talk too
- 26:16Speaker 1: much about it, but there's like a thing. There's like
- 26:19Speaker 1: a It's not like an angel talking to me. It's
- 26:22Speaker 1: like my homunculous a little bit. Well. I mean, last
- 26:25Speaker 1: time I was here, I got visited buyout divine intervention,
- 26:32Speaker 1: like I got I got information that came from outside
- 26:36Speaker 1: of Oh no, I got it wrong though it wasn't
- 26:44Speaker 1: I've got no idea. Yeah, don't know. Spencer is such
- 26:46Speaker 1: a little cute pie. Again, it's a photo of me
- 26:51Speaker 1: from the late nineties with the host of a PBS
- 26:54Speaker 1: slapstick comedy show that taught outdoor skills. Corey, is it
- 26:58Speaker 1: what you thought it was going to be? Sir? Okay?
- 27:01Speaker 1: Is anybody else as confident? Is Corey? Are we too
- 27:05Speaker 1: old to know it? No? Actually, it's in your wheelhouse,
- 27:10Speaker 1: like you're your most primed to know this. Nineties that
- 27:14Speaker 1: that picture was from the late nineties. Yeah, a little
- 27:17Speaker 1: late for me. I mean, oh no, I should know it.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I know something about it. Still a great show. Just
- 27:26Speaker 1: start with someone. I'll show you mine. Don't say unless
- 27:28Speaker 1: it's right. It's Corey the only one who's coming up
- 27:31Speaker 1: with an answer. Brodie's List is writing, I have no clue.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Logan without
- 27:38Speaker 1: an answer, Hayden saying ranger Ricky without an answer, Alyssa
- 27:44Speaker 1: saying antique road show, Korean without an answer, Seth without
- 27:47Speaker 1: an answer. I kind of got it right, Steve saying
- 27:49Speaker 1: red Scare, red scare, and Corey, who got it right?
- 27:54Speaker 1: Said the Red Green Show. I don't think you get
- 27:57Speaker 1: it with some kind of like it was red, remember
- 28:03Speaker 1: me saying I know part of the name was red.
- 28:06Speaker 1: The Red Green Show had three hundred episodes that ran
- 28:10Speaker 1: from to two thousand six. It was about Red Green,
- 28:14Speaker 1: the president of the Possum Lodge Men's Club, and his
- 28:17Speaker 1: group of friends who always gave sage outdoor advice. This
- 28:21Speaker 1: is what one television critics said of the show quote,
- 28:25Speaker 1: I think Bob newharten plaid on acid with a chainsaw,
- 28:29Speaker 1: and you might come close to getting the essence of
- 28:31Speaker 1: what made Red Green so enjoyable. How how did that
- 28:34Speaker 1: encounter end up happening? Oh, he came to I think
- 28:37Speaker 1: it was an Ace hardware store in Sioux Falls, which
- 28:40Speaker 1: is about an hour where I was from, and I
- 28:41Speaker 1: watched every episode of Red Green, so we went to
- 28:44Speaker 1: see him. What does that have to do with your camp?
- 28:47Speaker 1: It was like it was a show that taught like
- 28:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna show you how to take a ceiling fan
- 28:51Speaker 1: and make a boat motor. He would do things like that,
- 28:53Speaker 1: or I'm gonna show you how to clean your gun,
- 28:55Speaker 1: and then as he's handling the gun, it accidentally goes
- 28:57Speaker 1: off that that was like the whole Red Green stick.
- 29:01Speaker 1: He'd be very healthfully if you were trying to catch
- 29:02Speaker 1: the kind of stuff that happens to deer cameras going
- 29:06Speaker 1: off motor boat. We have two questions left. Give us
- 29:09Speaker 1: a scoreboard update, uh Alyssa and Hayden. I'm so sorry
- 29:14Speaker 1: but you already no longer in the running. But we
- 29:17Speaker 1: have Logan and Karin with four points apiece seven, Corey
- 29:21Speaker 1: with five, and Stephen Brody with six. Do you remember
- 29:24Speaker 1: we're not identified Hayden as an this is my worst
- 29:32Speaker 1: on Friday. It's all about endurance. Here did he get
- 29:36Speaker 1: his name now? Corey? Before we move on, did you
- 29:40Speaker 1: watch Red Green a lot? No? I never watched a
- 29:43Speaker 1: single episode. Oh but you still knew it? Yeah? I
- 29:45Speaker 1: just I think one day I was looking up the
- 29:47Speaker 1: Tom Green Show and remember and watch five minutes skits
- 29:55Speaker 1: and was like, oh yeah, this is cool, and you
- 29:57Speaker 1: know it's stuck in my steel trap of a memory.
- 29:58Speaker 1: It's great question. The topic is wildlife. This next great
- 30:04Speaker 1: question comes to is via Kevin ramd In. If you
- 30:07Speaker 1: have a question you think it's right from Meat Eater Trivia,
- 30:09Speaker 1: you can send it to trivia at the meat eater
- 30:11Speaker 1: dot com. What bird is featured on a standard Canadian
- 30:15Speaker 1: one dollar coin? What bird is featured on a standard
- 30:22Speaker 1: Canadian one dollar coins? It's the quickest answer. I just
- 30:27Speaker 1: pulled out Brody Logan with the quick answer. Smather folks,
- 30:32Speaker 1: quick Brody. Though it's not real close to Canada. Just
- 30:40Speaker 1: you can see Russia from his house. It's harder play
- 30:45Speaker 1: like that. It is. It's like it's like when I'm
- 30:47Speaker 1: trying to get something done and my kids are screaming.
- 30:50Speaker 1: It's a lot like that. I have a feeling he's
- 30:53Speaker 1: still my Get it right, does everybody? Okay, I need
- 30:57Speaker 1: a little extra time since Steve was distracting me. Steve,
- 31:00Speaker 1: why do you know this one so well? Okay, I'm
- 31:03Speaker 1: not telling I'll tell you later. He grew up in Michigan. No, no,
- 31:11Speaker 1: Brody m Corey, you know this one? I do you
- 31:16Speaker 1: grew up in a state that borders Canada. Yeah, it
- 31:18Speaker 1: was like an hour and a half from Canada. Got
- 31:22Speaker 1: a lot of these coins as a tip. They don't
- 31:25Speaker 1: work too well. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 31:28Speaker 1: have Steve saying loon he nearly erased it on a
- 31:31Speaker 1: sweatshirt from celebrating Logan sang falcon Hayden without an answer,
- 31:37Speaker 1: Brody saying he's not letting me see it, bald the Eagle.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I like that though, that's creative. A list of saying Crane,
- 31:43Speaker 1: Karin saying golden eagle, Cordy sang loon, Seth saying osprey.
- 31:49Speaker 1: The correct answer is loon. Uh they call it. They
- 31:53Speaker 1: call it looney. Canadian coins and tunis the standard one
- 32:00Speaker 1: dollar coin features a loon, which is why it's called
- 32:03Speaker 1: a looney. The standard two dollar coin features a polar bear,
- 32:07Speaker 1: but Canadians combine the words too and looney to come
- 32:11Speaker 1: up with tuny. They're badass. Analysis Spencer, there Fell, we
- 32:16Speaker 1: have one question left. Give us a scoreboard update. We
- 32:20Speaker 1: have three players left in the game. Corey and Brody
- 32:23Speaker 1: have six points and Steve has seven. All comes down
- 32:29Speaker 1: question ten. The topic is hunting. Name one of the
- 32:35Speaker 1: three states with the most black bear entries in the
- 32:38Speaker 1: Boone and Crockett record Book. Name one of the three
- 32:44Speaker 1: states with the most black bear entries in the Boone
- 32:47Speaker 1: and Crockett record Book. One more time? Who were the
- 32:51Speaker 1: three players left? Phil, Corey, Brody and Steve? And Steve
- 32:56Speaker 1: has seven Brody and Corey of six. We need Steve
- 32:58Speaker 1: to get this wrong, Brody and Corey to get it right,
- 33:02Speaker 1: and we will go to overtime. Cory has never won
- 33:05Speaker 1: a game of trivia. Have you been to overtime before? No? Okay,
- 33:09Speaker 1: we could have a first Steve, how confident are you? Okay?
- 33:21Speaker 1: Got this one? Maybe? What's the question? Name one of
- 33:27Speaker 1: the three states with the most black bear entries in
- 33:31Speaker 1: the Boon and Crockett record Book. Does everybody have an answer?
- 33:38Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve sang Alaska,
- 33:42Speaker 1: Logan saying Montana, Hayden sang Maine, Brodie saying Pennsylvania, Alyssa
- 33:47Speaker 1: saying Maine, Karin saying Arkansas, Cordy sang North Carolina, Seth
- 33:52Speaker 1: saying Alaska. I do something for bonus. Let's hear it.
- 33:55Speaker 1: I think it's Pennsylvania, Alaska, and Maine. North Carolina betches.
- 34:01Speaker 1: The three states are Alaska, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Wisconsin by
- 34:12Speaker 1: getting that one right and finishes with eight correct answers.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Wisconsin has a demanding lead on the rest of the
- 34:20Speaker 1: country with eight hundred forty two boone and Crockett Black Bears.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Hit me with that again. Wisconsin has a demanding lead
- 34:26Speaker 1: with eight hundred forty two boone and Crockett Black Bears.
- 34:30Speaker 1: That's followed by Pennsylvania with four thirty six, Alaska with
- 34:34Speaker 1: two forty eight, Minnesota with two forty three, Colorado in
- 34:38Speaker 1: North Carolina with two oh eight, in Arizona with one man.
- 34:43Speaker 1: I won, but the skin of my teeth? Do you
- 34:44Speaker 1: gotta get your bears checked? In Alaska? Well, it depends
- 34:49Speaker 1: like teeth, and because I bet you a lot, go on,
- 34:55Speaker 1: No not you do you definitely not even depends on
- 34:58Speaker 1: what gm you you're in. There's gm us where there's
- 35:01Speaker 1: nothing you need to do. This is why I make
- 35:04Speaker 1: Doug During so mad when I say that the Boone
- 35:06Speaker 1: and Crockett record book is more about like your culture
- 35:09Speaker 1: than it is the big quitters being killed, because Wisconsin
- 35:13Speaker 1: also leads the nation and Boone and Crockett entries for
- 35:15Speaker 1: white tails, but I doubt that that state solely has
- 35:18Speaker 1: the most giant white tails and the most giant black
- 35:20Speaker 1: bears being killed. It's just like in their culture to
- 35:24Speaker 1: be entering those things in a book where may not man,
- 35:27Speaker 1: there's a lot of hunters entering a lot of animals,
- 35:30Speaker 1: so it definitely shows a trend in the in the
- 35:32Speaker 1: population of animals. I would agree, but you think, but
- 35:35Speaker 1: I think Alaska, you could have so many Boone and
- 35:39Speaker 1: Crockett bears that never ever get ready exactly because but
- 35:42Speaker 1: in some states, you know, every bear gets killed exactly
- 35:45Speaker 1: like Pennsylvania. Steve wins with eight correct answers. What happens
- 35:49Speaker 1: next is he gets to choose where the five hundred
- 35:52Speaker 1: dollar donation goes. So what's it gonna be? Uh? Last
- 35:56Speaker 1: time I won did the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership this time, however,
- 36:02Speaker 1: because we just uh we just we we have at mediator,
- 36:06Speaker 1: we have a land Access Initiative fund. We have some
- 36:09Speaker 1: news on that right yeah, and we just drained it out,
- 36:13Speaker 1: um because we participated in a big public land purchase
- 36:19Speaker 1: a couple of years ago. We did one in Maine.
- 36:21Speaker 1: This year we did one in Montana, and uh we
- 36:24Speaker 1: just kind of sucked her dry so in to help
- 36:27Speaker 1: fill our land Access Initiative fund back up again, I'm
- 36:30Speaker 1: gonna donate my winnings this time on this distinct occasion
- 36:36Speaker 1: of wind, I'm gonna donate it to the meat Eater
- 36:39Speaker 1: Land Access Initiative. And what did that most recent purchase
- 36:42Speaker 1: get us? What happened with the Montana land access someone
- 36:46Speaker 1: else get the super lives it was. It was a
- 36:48Speaker 1: big chunk of land up in near Glacier. It's called
- 36:52Speaker 1: what's called Montana Outdoors that mm hmm uh so former
- 36:58Speaker 1: timberland that wins up a ton of access to national
- 37:01Speaker 1: forest land, but also is a sizeable chunk of land.
- 37:04Speaker 1: It will be forever made public um going forward, and
- 37:09Speaker 1: it provided great access to stuff it would have been
- 37:11Speaker 1: otherwise difficult to access. Now, after the main project, you
- 37:15Speaker 1: made a proclamation that nobody from meat eater would step
- 37:18Speaker 1: foot on that piece of ground. Does that same thing
- 37:21Speaker 1: standard I said that, Um, I didn't say that I
- 37:25Speaker 1: couldn't prevent anyone from doing it, but I bet you
- 37:27Speaker 1: that want not being true on this one I could.
- 37:30Speaker 1: I would happily say that I would for whatever reason.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I would be like, Okay, I won't go there, but
- 37:36Speaker 1: I wouldn't want to say that anyone that works you
- 37:38Speaker 1: won't go, because I bet you they will. You won't
- 37:40Speaker 1: be mad if Hayden is there next one. I don't know,
- 37:42Speaker 1: but I would happily say I would in order for
- 37:45Speaker 1: someone to say like, oh, you're just doing it because
- 37:48Speaker 1: you blah blah blah, like that it's that it somehow
- 37:52Speaker 1: isn't that it somehow motivated by personal desire to you know,
- 37:57Speaker 1: like to like that's my favorite spot. So to take
- 38:00Speaker 1: all the people's money and put it towards that to
- 38:03Speaker 1: reduce the appearance of a conflict of interest, I would
- 38:06Speaker 1: readily agree to not stop foot on it. Five dollars
- 38:10Speaker 1: going to Meat Eaters Land Access Initiative. It's probably the
- 38:13Speaker 1: first five dollars put in there of the new year. Now,
- 38:17Speaker 1: we have some sad news to deliver before we get
- 38:19Speaker 1: out of here. About two weeks ago, we lost friend
- 38:21Speaker 1: of the show, Ed Newman, at age forty six. Ed
- 38:24Speaker 1: is the man who built our Meat Eater Trivia Trophy,
- 38:26Speaker 1: Meat Eater Trivia Championship plaque, and Meat Eat or Chili
- 38:29Speaker 1: Cookoff Trophy. Ed passed away after an afternoon of hunting,
- 38:33Speaker 1: which his family wanted to point out in the obituary
- 38:35Speaker 1: because the outdoors were that important to him. Ed was
- 38:38Speaker 1: fantastic to work with. You could tell you he he was
- 38:40Speaker 1: incredibly passionate about teaching and all things hunting, fishing, and conservation. Genuinely,
- 38:45Speaker 1: there wasn't a person better suited to take on these
- 38:47Speaker 1: projects than Ed. So we're thankful we got to know Ed.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and students, and
- 38:53Speaker 1: we dedicate this episode of Meat Eat or Trivia to him,
- 38:56Speaker 1: the only game show where conservation always wins. Thank you, Ed.
