- 0:01Welcome to Domer and Sons, a family podcast on Notre Dame football.
- 0:06I'm Calvin Rose, the co-host and the Domer son, and I'm joined by my other son, William Rose.
- 0:15And- He's your son?
- 0:17Mm-hmm.
- 0:18And, my dad, Matthew Rose.
- 0:21Hi, William Hey, Cal.
- 0:25Hi, Dad.
- 0:26Hey, Cal.
- 0:27It's Friday, October 16th, it's episode seven, today we're doing a Stanford recap, BYU preview, and later on we'll be joined by Liz Rice and Ri Bevel, two former Notre Dame swimmers who will talk about BYU and give us their game prediction.
- 0:46Awesome job, Cal.
- 0:47So we're gonna be quick on this Stanford recap.
- 0:50Uh, as people will later on find out, we originally had recorded on Sunday, and because I'm fairly incompetent with being consistent with this new tech, I did not record our conversation.
- 1:06So anyways, this is round two for us.
- 1:09Yeah.
- 1:09So Stanford recap.
- 1:11Last Saturday Notre Dame completely dismantled Stanford 58 to seven.
- 1:17Not much to say here except it was, uh, a thorough whoopin' from start to finish.
- 1:24Cal, really, really quickly, tell me a little bit about some of the highlights from a offensive side of the ball.
- 1:29I'm just gonna only talk about our positives, and I'm gonna be really quick about it.
- 1:34Great distribution of the ball.
- 1:36CJ Carr threw the ball very well.
- 1:38Uh, there was only one play where I thought CJ Carr made a very risky pass, and that was his almost interception in that in route.
- 1:45I think he was just staring at him the entire time, and the linebacker made a good play.
- 1:50Jonas Walton had an amazing game.
- 1:52He had one carry for 97 yards, but he also had other multiple carries, 13.9 yards per carry on 13 carries and two touchdowns.
- 2:02181 yards, which is also a Notre Dame freshman record.
- 2:06Yeah.
- 2:06And then Aanias Scott, his special wheel route to go to the house.
- 2:10There's not much else I have to say about our offense besides we played great, distributed the ball well, and our offensive line played great.
- 2:18Yeah, 12 different people received the ball.
- 2:20I think we got eight of the receivers with receptions.
- 2:23Ian Primer caught his first ball of the year, and Elijah Burris caught his first touchdown pass in an Irish uniform.
- 2:31A stat line I wanna talk about real quick was,, I saw this, out of 151 dropbacks CJ Carr has thrown the ball in harm's way four times, which is a 98%, rate of, like, safety.
- 2:46So I think that's pretty remarkable that he's played, what, seven games, six games?
- 2:51Seven.
- 2:52Six games this season.
- 2:54Yeah, there's a major difference between this year and last year with CJ.
- 2:56He's not, he's typically not forcing it when he's dropping back, and I think you're seeing that, to your point, William.
- 3:04Yeah.
- 3:04Did get a little bit concerned about that jump route by the linebacker and what that means for a significantly better linebacking core for BYU.
- 3:11All right, really quick, tell me about the defensive side of the ball, William So I think the biggest takeaway from this defensive side of the game is Bubacar Traore's a monster.
- 3:22He's special.
- 3:24That interception just shows his athleticism and how he's, like, not one-sided.
- 3:30He also had that forced fumble first play of the game.
- 3:33It was, great.
- 3:34We allowed just over 200 yards of total offense.
- 3:39The one explosive play they had was a botched zone coverage, which was, a Chris Ash thing, not a player thing.
- 3:47No, it was really solid.
- 3:49I'm proud of our boys.
- 3:52Zachary with his first ever pick, which was great.
- 3:55Yep.
- 3:56And also even without KVA and Leonard Moore, our defense still looked stellar to say the least.
- 4:01Yeah.
- 4:01I thought our linebackers stepped up a good amount, and DJ McKinney can prove why he can be a corner one, but he's also a great corner two for us, yeah.
- 4:10Jaden Sanders did a really good job that game as well.
- 4:13Yeah overall just a, a really nice, nice game for us.
- 4:18And three total turnovers, you know, two interceptions, a recovered fumble.
- 4:22We continue just to be really plus, plus in turnover margin, which is critical for the success of any sort of team success and also defensive success.
- 4:34So awesome stuff.
- 4:35Yep.
- 4:35Awesome stuff.
- 4:36Yep.
- 4:36All right, let's do quickly, game balls, and I don't think there'll be very many surprises on this one.
- 4:41Cal offense, who's your game ball?
- 4:42Joe Ness Walton, no explanation needed.
- 4:45Yep, agreed.
- 4:46William?
- 4:47I got CJ Carr.
- 4:48Yeah, I mean, again, hard to argue with that.
- 4:51CJ was 14 of 20, super efficient, 181 yards, three touchdowns.
- 4:56Uh, how many rushing touchdowns does CJ have?
- 5:00This season?
- 5:01No, d- he had one y- on, on Stanford?
- 5:03No.
- 5:03No.
- 5:03Okay.
- 5:03No, but he ran, he ran- Oh exceptionally well.
- 5:06He did.
- 5:07He had 41 yards rushing.
- 5:08He had some design runs in there that were pretty darn cool.
- 5:11And I think when he has design runs, he calls his own number, which is interesting.
- 5:15Yeah, yeah, probably the coaching staff isn't thrilled about that, but he's seeing something that is allowing him to get some positive yardage.
- 5:23And I think he's smart enough not to put himself in harm's way, knock on wood here.
- 5:27All it does is it creates another dynamic for defenses to account for in the future, which is, uh, uh, obviously a, a really positive thing.
- 5:37Defensive side of the ball, game ball.
- 5:39William?
- 5:41I got Jayden Sanders.
- 5:43Yep.
- 5:43I think it was easy to let Stanford pass the ball all over us.
- 5:47They were averaging a good amount of passing yards per game, and Sanders filled the role of the best defensive player in the country, and he did it well.
- 5:56Agreed Bubacar Traore.
- 5:59Again, I don't think I need an explanation No, he was just dominant once again.
- 6:05I think there's nothing much to say on either one of those.
- 6:08Cal, I'd just kind of duplicate your game balls.
- 6:11Go with Walton and Traore here.
- 6:14And then wild card, Calvin, who do you got for your wild card?
- 6:17The entire running back room.
- 6:19I think we don't see it very often when four different backs score a touchdown, whether it's rushing or receiving, and I thought it was very impressive.
- 6:29So I got the entire running back room.
- 6:32That's awesome.
- 6:32William, wild card?
- 6:34My wild card was our intensity to start out the game.
- 6:39Yeah.
- 6:40Yeah.
- 6:40Yeah.
- 6:41Fast start.
- 6:41Similar to Rice, yeah.
- 6:42Yeah.
- 6:43It's hard to deal with a fast start, especially with this team, uh- Yeah, which Notre Dame's not known for their fast starts particularly.
- 6:49No, this, this game started off quite fast, but I'm gonna be honest, Bubacar wasn't blocked at all on his strip sack, but, you know, we'll take it.
- 6:59Yeah.
- 6:59Strip sack's a strip sack.
- 7:00Absolutely.
- 7:01My wild card goes out to, a friend of ours who works at the university, Cheryl Vowels.
- 7:08If you follow us on social media, maybe you saw that, Cal and I had access to not only a Thursday afternoon kind of walkthrough practice, which was really, really cool, but also we were able to get on the field before the game during warmups.
- 7:23And thanks to Cheryl for working some magic to, to allow us to experience a really intimate, and special, environment to be able to do all that stuff.
- 7:34So Cheryl, if you're listening, thank you so much.
- 7:38Really appreciate it, had a blast, so thank you.
- 7:41All right.
- 7:42Yeah.
- 7:43Let's get on to Brigham Young University.
- 7:47Number two versus number eight in Provo, Utah, under the lights.
- 7:54Game starts at 7:30 Eastern, 5:30 Mountain, so maybe we'll get a little bit of daylight here, some dusk, and then we're in, in a nighttime football game, a top 10 matchup, college game day, the whole thing.
- 8:09Yeah.
- 8:09Here we are.
- 8:11The second half of the season technically starts, even though we haven't had a bye, second half of the season starts officially with this game, game seven.
- 8:19Let's go through it.
- 8:20So William Under the lights what is Notre Dame dealing with BYU?
- 8:25BYU, so their offense is lacking, but their defense is really where they win their football games.
- 8:32For offense, they have huge receivers.
- 8:35I think their number one right now is 6'1", and that's the shortest they have.
- 8:39Others are 6'4", 6'5", and 6'7".
- 8:43They're looking to screen the ball and have the big boys blocking, to, try to see if our DBs can get off the, the tall frames of their receivers.
- 8:54They're not running the ball very effectively if it's not with Bear Bachmeier.
- 8:59He does have, a decent amount of rushing yards, about 350.
- 9:03But their number one, running back, LJ Martin, is out with a lower body injury.
- 9:10And, their other outside linebacker, Isaiah Glasker, is also out for their defense.
- 9:18BYU is a hundred, 101 in explosive plays allowed, which is one of the worst in the FBS, and if we can get by the blitz with maybe a screen or a quick slant, I think we're gonna have success.
- 9:33They're looking to blitz every single play.
- 9:35They do a lot of six, six of the line stuff.
- 9:39Their run defense isn't as good as you think, and, their pass defense, while their DBs are good, like I said, if you get through, if you break a line, you're gone.
- 9:54I think once CJ Carr settles into the game, reads the defense, figure out what works and what doesn't, him and Denbrock can tear this defense apart.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:06I think I agree with you, in a whole.
- 10:09What do you ha- have to think about our D-line against containing Bear Bachmeier and just against their O-line in general?
- 10:16So BYU's O-line is severely injured right now from the beginning of the season.
- 10:23So they g- their run offense is terrible right now, which is what they've been centered around.
- 10:29Once LJ- Their run offense- Yeah with running backs.
- 10:31Correct.
- 10:31With running backs.
- 10:32With Bear Bachmeier, I think if we put a spy, we bring a safety into the box, or the D tackles really, really execute on shedding their blocks and getting to inside to fill the A gap, I think we'll be fine.
- 10:46Yeah.
- 10:46I wouldn't be- Yeah surprised to see a lot of seven, eight in the box go man to man- Yeah one safety up high- Mm-hmm and just selling out for the run to try to get those guys to third and long and in passing situations.
- 11:02They're not great at third down conversions, and if we can get them so that we know that they're passing, we'll be in a good spot.
- 11:10I have read this.
- 11:12Bachmeier I think is fourth in the country in how quickly he gets the ball out of his hands.
- 11:17Yep, that's'cause of the O-line.
- 11:18They screen...
- 11:19Exactly.
- 11:20That's my interpretation too, William, is that they, they are doing that because the O-line really can't hold up against a ferocious pass rush.
- 11:29Which, as we've proved out, we can bring it with the- Mm best of them.
- 11:33Yep.
- 11:33Yes.
- 11:34I'm with you, Calvin.
- 11:36I think a lot of this is just containing Bachmeier And to making sure that he is not a running weapon and having him make the throws.
- 11:46And he's gotten better, you know.
- 11:47Um, when, you know, you showed me the highlights from the Iowa State game and the thing I was surprised about was his accuracy and intermediate throws was pretty impressive.
- 11:56So, if we're gonna go man to man and we're gonna stack the box trying to, uh, make sure we're containing the run- Which I hope we do.
- 12:05Yeah, I agree.
- 12:06I agree.
- 12:06We, we've proven now time and time again that we can do that.
- 12:09But if that's the game plan, then our corners are gonna have to be on it.
- 12:14Speaking of corners, good piece of information coming out of Notre Dame this week is it appears as if- Leonard Moore and Jason Onye are ruled, available for the game.
- 12:25Are available for the game.
- 12:26Yeah.
- 12:26And I think this'll be Leonard Moore biggest, Leonard Moore's biggest test yet besides, Lemon and Smith in the finals.
- 12:34Yeah.
- 12:34You know, another concern I have, guys, is as North Carolina proved out us covering the tight end has not been something that- Yeah we've been particularly good at this season, so.
- 12:44And they play with their tight ends.
- 12:45They play with their tight ends, so our linebackers and Christian Gray are gonna get tested this week.
- 12:51And if those guys can play above and beyond, I, I don't think this is close.
- 12:58If they struggle, this is gonna be a dog fight, and it might be a dog fight to the very, very end.
- 13:04I would prefer to see what would happened in the Wisconsin/Michigan State games where it is kinda close going into halftime, we come out, and eventually we wear them down, and I think that's ultimately what will happen.
- 13:17Mm-hmm.
- 13:18Any, any concerns that you guys have in particular?
- 13:21No.
- 13:22I agree with what you're saying, and I think that Bachmeier needs to He just gets the ball out'cause that offensive line isn't very good.
- 13:31And I just think- Teon Gray, Francis Brew and Onye and maybe even Mukum are just gonna have, are gonna try to have a field day against this team, against this offensive line.
- 13:44And then our edge rushers will.
- 13:46I think Bryce Young's also due for a good game.
- 13:49I think the tough thing about that is they really Calvin, they like screen the ball and they run the ball.
- 13:56They don't give the O-line a chance.
- 13:58They don't even give the ends their play a chance to sack him.
- 14:02I looked through the stats.
- 14:03They've allowed three sacks all season, all in the first two games of the season because they were still trying to pass the ball.
- 14:10Now they're screening.
- 14:11My biggest concern actually is, their receivers are effectively tight ends, how big they are.
- 14:18So if our DBs can't get off the block, we're gonna have to rely on the safeties to come in and make the tackle which I'm confident we can do- Yeah because Adon Shuler is one of the best players I've seen that can do that.
- 14:28Yeah, I think also we just need to look at hopefully just having one high safety there the entire time and not two.
- 14:35I think two high safeties really dares them to run the ball with either Bachmeier or their running back.
- 14:40So I think having Talich back there,'cause I, I kinda think he's better in that deep coverage than, uh, Shuler.
- 14:47Definitely,'cause he's 6'4".
- 14:49Still.
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:51Um- And, and he's a ball hawk.
- 14:52Yeah.
- 14:52Yeah, and he's a ball hawk.
- 14:54And then offensively obviously we've got to continue to be able to run the ball.
- 14:58That's gonna be critical.
- 14:59And as we've seen over the last three weeks, it's gotten better and better with our offensive line continuity.
- 15:06They're creating holes for all three backs.
- 15:09This is the game where i'm assuming Nolan James is going to start which I think is completely fine.
- 15:14But maybe what we've seen over the last two weeks is that there's now a switch that Jonaz Walton will get a majority of the carries.
- 15:23And I'm good with all three backs playing.
- 15:26I think we need them, especially as you think about the length and duration of the season that we hope to have.
- 15:33On the depth chart it sa- it listed, um, Aeneas Williams as running back one.
- 15:38Does that mean- Aeneas does that mean anything?
- 15:40I don't think it means anything.
- 15:42Okay.
- 15:42I think it's semantics at this point.
- 15:44Yeah.
- 15:44We have three RB1s at this point and I think- Yeah we all know that- Yeah the reality of it is probably Jonaz is RB1- Yeah Nolan James is RB2 and Aeneas is RB3.
- 15:55I think one of my- Yeah favorite things about this game is we have three great running backs and- We're not gonna get tired- Yeah with those running backs.
- 16:05They're gonna, they're gonna try to hit us.
- 16:06They're gonna send a lot of blitz.
- 16:07Yeah.
- 16:09If any of them have remotely as a good game as they did last week, we'll rush for well over 200 and we'll, well, I think we'll tear this defense apart.
- 16:20If, if we run for 200 yards, I'm telling you guys right now, we run for 200 yards and we're at least even on turnover margin, we win this game.
- 16:29Yes.
- 16:29Turnover margin is the most important stat for me, frankly I also wanna say this.
- 16:32Well, at the Stanford game, I think you heard me say this as well, we shuffled a back every two drives.
- 16:38So Nolan James started.
- 16:40He got the first two drives, then Aeneas, then Jonas.
- 16:44And if you look at Nolan James, 10 carries for 73 yards and two touchdowns.
- 16:50He had a good game.
- 16:51I think we didn't give him enough credit.
- 16:53He had a very good game.
- 16:55And Aeneas seven carries for 28 yards and four yards a carry.
- 16:59So I just think our running backs are just gonna do very well this game, and I think Ja'vion Osborne showed us some flashes against Stanford, so Yeah, and what doesn't show up on a stat sheet, Aeneas' runs, I think they were critical runs on, you know, a third down.
- 17:13Yeah.
- 17:13Um, so, you know, he, he just needs to get the yardage, and he has proven to get it over and over again.
- 17:19Obviously he's a absolute asset, and probably our best blocking running back, and you can't argue with the way he is able to go out and receive the ball.
- 17:30As you deal with pressure, on the offensive line, and specifically C.J.
- 17:37Carr, as you deal with pressure, oftentimes you're audibling out into your own screens, your own quick slants.
- 17:45So, if anything, having C.J.
- 17:47Carr as your quarterback in a game against- Yeah uh, a defensive line that does a lot of loops, a lot of stunts, they do a lot of just exotic stuff that- Yeah requires a lot of communication with your offensive line.
- 18:02But to have a quarterback out there who can switch into different protections based on what he's seen in the film room, guys, you know, uh He's amazing at calling things out before the play.
- 18:13I think GameDay did a little- Yeah segment on it.
- 18:15He's- The Jaden, I was thinking about this, the Jaden Greathouse on the goal line was a really...
- 18:20I think he literally changed his route Changed his route right there.
- 18:24Yeah.
- 18:24Yeah.
- 18:25Which is crazy.
- 18:26That's kinda crazy.
- 18:27I, that, so we're, we're living in very charmed times, guys.
- 18:31Mm-hmm.
- 18:32Uh, you know?
- 18:32And there's a chance he stays next year, but we're not gonna focus on that, we're gonna focus on giving our game predictions.
- 18:38No, hold on, I have one last thing.
- 18:40Oh, yeah.
- 18:40All right?
- 18:40Yeah.
- 18:41Yeah.
- 18:41So one thing is all year BYU has not converted a fourth down.
- 18:47They've only been faced with it four times.
- 18:49They haven't converted it at all, and out of, out of, um, not, 10 trips to the red zone their opponents have gone on They've gave up eight touchdowns That's a lot That's a lot Their red zone defense- Yes has not been great.
- 19:04And on third down, they're 35%.
- 19:07That's also not good.
- 19:09That's not good.
- 19:10Yeah.
- 19:10No.
- 19:11So like I said, explosive plays, right?
- 19:15That's gonna be the most important thing, and we gotta find our footing in the running game and the passing game.
- 19:19Yeah, and I'm just gonna mention this'cause you said explosive plays, and you s- you said something about a quick slant.
- 19:24I'm thinking is there a chance maybe Bubba Frazier could possibly get here and j- just because of his breakaway speed and just because you put him on a quick slant, we saw in that little practice clip, it's a slant against a better defense, and he just runs away.
- 19:39So- I think, I think we got guys who can do that.
- 19:41We do have guys.
- 19:42We do have guys who, uh, I think we do have guys that'll do that, but to your point, Cal, he'd offer something that the other receivers really can't.
- 19:48And guys, I think we've praised CJ for his ability to change up plays.
- 19:53William, you just said that he literally changed up Greathouse's route at the line of scrimmage.
- 19:58Well, if you are a freshman or sophomore receiver and you don't know this playbook and all the different variations- that come out of it, you're not gonna get on the field because CJ is constantly- Changing evaluating and changing, right?
- 20:14Yeah.
- 20:15So there's a reason why we haven't seen a lot of these receivers that we would like to see is because, they probably just have not been able to get completely up to speed to everything in the playbook, which I completely understand.
- 20:28Yeah, it's gonna be exciting.
- 20:30For me, another key point of this game is gonna be what happens on fourth down.
- 20:34We have to win fourth down.
- 20:36Marcus is gonna be aggressive on fourth down.
- 20:38We have to win more times than not, and I'm assuming BYU's also gonna have to be aggressive- Yeah, their- on fourth down the defense is 33%, so they're gonna have to do something different and bring some more heat.
- 20:50Yeah.
- 20:50Yeah, I'm just interested at what point do we not go for fourth down,'cause I think if we're at the 50-yard line and it's fourth and four, I think- I would go for it personally.
- 21:00I mean- What I like about this team is we did this last year.
- 21:04We can run the ball on third and eight, third and 10 because we're gonna go for it on fourth.
- 21:10Granted, that was with Love and he could get more yards per carry, but I think if we're around the 50, it's third and eight, I'd be completely fine running the ball up the middle, then let's go for it.
- 21:20Yeah.
- 21:20I don't disagree.
- 21:21It's third and long, you do have the opportunity with the backs that we have to, make that a two-play series to try to get first down.
- 21:31Yeah.
- 21:31All right.
- 21:32Predictions All right, Cal, you wanna go first?
- 21:35Yeah, I'll go first.
- 21:35I It's gonna be a dog fight in the first half like it always is, but I think our, ability, our conditioning is just gonna come into the second half.
- 21:44We're gonna wear BYU out.
- 21:45I think it's gonna be a 31-17 game, Notre Dame.
- 21:52Awesome.
- 21:52Awesome.
- 21:52I was, I was gonna say 31 to 20.
- 21:5431-20?
- 21:55Yeah, yeah.
- 21:56Okay.
- 21:56Those are all good.
- 21:57Um, I'm going actually a little bit closer, guys.
- 22:00I'm gonna say 28 to 17.
- 22:02Both teams take their time on offense.
- 22:05Both teams have shown the ability to have sustained drives.
- 22:08Again, that's why I think fourth down's gonna be critical.
- 22:11We are not gonna have the ball as much as we have had these last several games.
- 22:15So we have to make everything count, and as a result I think it's gonna be a fairly low scoring game.
- 22:20Yeah.
- 22:21I think whoever gets to 24 first wins the game.
- 22:25I sort of agree with that, but I wanna say if we get a interception or something or a takeaway, we have to capitalize on it because that's an extra possession for us.
- 22:37We have to be able to go up two scores in this game.
- 22:40I think whoever goes up two scores first has the most likely chance to win.
- 22:45I think it would be awesome for us to defer if we win the coin toss.
- 22:49I think that'd be fairly- I think- crucial.
- 22:50I think that's generally what we do.
- 22:51Yeah, I know, but- Yeah especially for this game.
- 22:54Yeah, I'd It'd be nice to be able to- Just'cause- know what's happening- Yeah in the second half immediately, so.
- 22:58Set the tone.
- 23:00Set the tone.
- 23:01All right.
- 23:01So let, we'll get Ry and Liz on the phone and talk to them a little about what they're thinking about for BYU, and let's go get those guys.
- 23:12joining us today on this episode of Domer and Sons, I've got my two teammates from Notre Dame.
- 23:19We were in the same class with each other, Liz Rice and Ry Bevil.
- 23:24Liz, currently lives in Lancaster.
- 23:27Lancaster.
- 23:28Yes, you do.
- 23:29PA, just outside of Philly.
- 23:32And then, Professor Ry Bevil lives in, Berkeley, California.
- 23:36Just so our listeners know, we recorded on Sunday and my technologically inept, skills here, I screwed up the recording and the audio.
- 23:48So these guys are gracious enough to do round two here on Thursday.
- 23:52So guys, thank you for being patient with me, and thank you for agreeing to come back on.
- 23:57Game balls from Stanford, if you can still remember what that game was.
- 24:01Rice, who'd you got?
- 24:02Offensive game ball.
- 24:04All right.
- 24:05So for offensive game ball, I have, Jonas Walton.
- 24:08He is the true freshman, running back.
- 24:11And like I mentioned, part of the reason I chose him was to honor your son, Cal, because we know that Matt loves freshmen.
- 24:19And, but bec- for his athletic skills, Jonas went on the 97-yard run.
- 24:24He had the third-longest run in offensive history, again from a freshman, which was great.
- 24:29and he also set the record for, the number of rushing yards in a single game by a freshman, the most by any player this year.
- 24:37He had 181 total yards.
- 24:40The other cool fact about Jonas is that, we learned he loves Legos, and he has a lot of cool Lego sets.
- 24:46And I actually saw a couple pictures of that after we had taped the initial pod last Sunday.
- 24:51And, yeah, he is like all in on the Legos.
- 24:54This is like a long- Are you a Lego family, Liz?
- 24:56Are you a Lego family?
- 24:56yeah.
- 24:57sure.
- 24:57I dabbled in the Legos here and there.
- 24:59Okay.
- 24:59but yeah, he's got kits and setups and all- Yeah.
- 25:01Our house is- Everything overrun by Lego, so I have total respect for that.
- 25:04Yeah.
- 25:05Exactly.
- 25:05Sy, Sy loves Legos, right?
- 25:06Oh, he loves Legos.
- 25:07Even my daughter, her, she's got them all over.
- 25:09I've, m- my wife has her own little city Lego collection.
- 25:12I've got my Star Wars and my, Lord of the Rings stuff over here.
- 25:16So yeah, we're all geeky out on the Legos.
- 25:18Nice.
- 25:19Oh, that's awesome.
- 25:19That's awesome.
- 25:21Beville, who do you got?
- 25:22Game ball.
- 25:22I had the same, I had the same player.
- 25:25And again, as I mentioned, I came at it just from a different angle.
- 25:28I've been high, as high on Walton for weeks now in our private texts during the game.
- 25:33I've been looking at more metrics type things.
- 25:35Even before his big debut, I'd been crunching numbers and looking at his stats, and reading a lot of things from analysts and watching, game tape.
- 25:44these, these folks on YouTube or former players or coaches who break down the game tape and saying Look at the off- offensive line come together.
- 25:51Look how they're gelling better.
- 25:53Look at the tight ends, how they're blocking better.
- 25:55So it seemed to me only a matter of time before Walton just blew it wide open, and he did.
- 26:00And we're only getting better, so I think this momentum's gonna carry forward.
- 26:04he's just a phenomenal player, and you remember Josh Adams, he broke Adams' record.
- 26:09And, Adams, we got a great season.
- 26:11We got a great three seasons out of him, and, I, Walton's gonna be better.
- 26:15Totally.
- 26:16other fun fact about Walton, he's from, outside of Atlanta.
- 26:20Yes.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20I saw that.
- 26:21Yeah.
- 26:21He's a Georgia kid.
- 26:23And we, we should come back to that conversation about the wrecking ball at the end if we've got time.
- 26:27Yeah, absolutely.
- 26:28Walton's a wrecking ball.
- 26:29He's got- Ry's got a little physics, micro class to teach here.
- 26:32it's pretty awesome.
- 26:33Yeah, that's for sure.
- 26:34That's for sure.
- 26:35all right, Ryce, defensive game ball.
- 26:37I got, Boubacar Traoré.
- 26:39He's a senior from Boston, and I just...
- 26:42I maybe didn't pronounce his name right, but I love his name.
- 26:44I love his energy.
- 26:46I love that he started the Stanford game with a sack and forced fumble in the first series of the game.
- 26:50He had an interception in the second quarter.
- 26:53He brings the energy, he's a big guy, and he makes plays happen.
- 26:56So he's my defensive game ball.
- 26:58Yeah, hard to, hard to argue on that one.
- 27:01What about you, Ry?
- 27:02I had the same one.
- 27:04Again, watching, film tape, Landon Tengvall is one.
- 27:08he's a former Penn State offensive line player, does some great film breakdown.
- 27:11Just really entertaining if no one's seen him.
- 27:14And then there's another guy called The Film Guy who's really entertaining as well, and they break down the tape.
- 27:18And they were showing Boubacar doing some of these moves that we tend to lose on television, and you're just like,"Man, this guy's got moves that, that are just really confusing offensive linesman." And he's just gonna, he's gonna get some sacks hopefully.
- 27:32He's gonna cause some disruption.
- 27:33And when Bear Bachmeier, gets a little uncomfortable back there, he's gonna run.
- 27:38He's gonna, try to get some yardage, and we've got KVA there to answer that hopefully.
- 27:43So I just think Boubacar's gonna be causing some, some chaos, causing some havoc.
- 27:47Absolutely.
- 27:48He is, he really is the anchor of that defensive line.
- 27:50A, a really deep defensive line at that.
- 27:53all right.
- 27:54Wild cards.
- 27:55Ryce.
- 27:57Yeah, so I got Marcus Freeman for the wild card.
- 27:59He's the first coach in history to have 16 straight wins with double-digit margins, and, that is actually surpassing the legendary Knute Rockne for the record for consecutive double-digit wins- Wow which is no small feat.
- 28:13So I think that's pretty awesome.
- 28:15I love what he's doing- That's, yeah- with the program that's super impressive.
- 28:18Yeah, we're fortunate to have him as our head coach, that's for sure.
- 28:23what about you, Ry?
- 28:24I had Scaife, our punter, Australian rules- Yeah football player punter.
- 28:28I think there's gonna be some trickery in this game.
- 28:30I just, I sense it coming.
- 28:32we s- we saw that, that fake punt go bad with the, freshman wide receiver.
- 28:37I think his name's Braden or Robinson, something like that.
- 28:39Really quick kid who unfortunately took the cut up the middle instead of the outside, in which case it would've gone for a, a touchdown.
- 28:46So we got a very fleeting glimpse of what's possible.
- 28:49Scaife had a terrible game at UNC.
- 28:52Granted, it was pouring rain and you remember he dropped the snap on a, it was like a field goal or an extra point.
- 28:57but the point is, I read this somewhere, that he's different than our former Australian rules punter in that he played a different position, that translates much better to American football.
- 29:06So he's got some skills.
- 29:08Big dude.
- 29:10could we expect something from him?
- 29:11Maybe.
- 29:12It'd be really interesting.
- 29:13And I just remember that game.
- 29:14It was Stanford last year where our punter threw to our tight end for a touchdown.
- 29:18That was so fun to watch.
- 29:20I was live at the game.
- 29:21Nice.
- 29:21And, they like...
- 29:22Th- for a few years we've seen some interesting punt tricks go on, so I think we might see something.
- 29:27Absolutely.
- 29:28Yeah.
- 29:28Marcus isn't afraid to dial up some trickery on fourth down, Mm and I love that about him.
- 29:33One of the many things I love about him.
- 29:34I have a feeling...
- 29:35Yeah, I feel like you're right.
- 29:36we're gonna be seeing some fourth down decisions this Saturday.
- 29:40And, I wouldn't be surprised if he reaches into his bag of tricks again.
- 29:45All right.
- 29:46So speaking of Saturday, Provo, Utah, and- Yes yes.
- 29:52The reason you two are on the pod, outside of just being lovely people who I get to chat with every now and then, is that's the site of- the first swim meet the three of us ever had for Notre Dame.
- 30:07All right.
- 30:07And I think I told you guys on Sunday, and I'll just, I'll start off with this.
- 30:11So my own- my, my core memory from that was, we were flying in from Chicago, I believe.
- 30:18That's probably, we went South Bend, Chicago, Salt Lake, and when we got off the plane, there was this young girl with her dad who, as we walked off, I heard her say,"Oh, that's what Catholics look like." Like- we were, we were zoo animals who Oh, that's a leopard." Something loud.
- 30:41Yeah, exactly.
- 30:42Exactly.
- 30:42"I've never seen a tiger before." Yeah, that's what- Yeah Catholics look like.
- 30:46little did she know, little did she know.
- 30:49Anyways, so you know, th- th- that, that meet was a pretty remarkable meet.
- 30:54I can also remember warming up and being like,"Oh yeah, we're at altitude."'Cause you push off the wall and you're like,"Yeah, the, the oxygen isn't coming as quickly as I would like here." Anyways.
- 31:06Yeah.
- 31:06Yeah, so tell me about your experiences.
- 31:08Ry- uh, Rice, let's start with you.
- 31:10Tell me about what you remember- from that time So yeah, I don't have quite the, steel trap memory that some other folks have, but yes, I remember being impacted by the altitude for sure, and I remember getting to BYU's campus and searching frantically for some kind of beverage that might have h- have caffeine in it.
- 31:29But of course we were told that wasn't gonna happen, and that was in- indeed true.
- 31:35So- Not even like a Coke there was no- No.
- 31:37Correct.
- 31:37It was all caffeine-free.
- 31:38Yeah.
- 31:38All caffeine-free products in the, The vending machines, right?
- 31:42Thank you.
- 31:43Dear Lord- I g- I got you during menopause.
- 31:45Gets you every time.
- 31:47In the vending machine.
- 31:48Yeah, I don't really remember even what I swam, but I know that we lost the meet and, I know that we re- one thing we didn't talk about the other day was that how we rematched BYU then back in South Bend the following year, our sophomore year.
- 32:02I don't- So we swam them- Oh, that's right in Provo our freshman year, and then they came to South Bend our sophomore year and we, the women's team anyway, beat BYU in South Bend our sophomore year, but we did indeed lose to them.
- 32:16Holy cow.
- 32:16I don't remember that at all until you just said that.
- 32:20That's wild.
- 32:20Do you remember that, Ry?
- 32:22Swimming at BYU at- Vaguely at South Bend.
- 32:24I remember swimming at BYU, of course- Yeah but I don't remember them coming to- Yeah South Bend.
- 32:29Yes.
- 32:30No, very vaguely.
- 32:31And, maybe it's because you guys lost both times.
- 32:33the men's team lost both times.
- 32:35Very vaguely.
- 32:35Yeah.
- 32:36that, that was a, a recurring pattern maybe in the four years that we were there.
- 32:40Yeah, our sophomore year was not a great year for Notre Dame swimming.
- 32:42Yeah, that was a rough year.
- 32:43but what I think was cool, and I did not respect this or have appreciation for this when we were freshmen, was that meet, of course, it, this coincided with the first ever matchup of BYU and ND, in the pool, of course.
- 32:56But I don't, I may have, we've only played BYU, I think this is our ninth time ninth time.
- 33:03Yeah.
- 33:03Or I'm sorry- We've not played- this is our 10th time.
- 33:05This, yeah.
- 33:0510th time.
- 33:06we have not played this team with a lot of frequency, and so it's just cool that we got to experience that, and the first time they played in Provo, and we were in front of a record crowd for BYU that day.
- 33:16Totally.
- 33:17Totally.
- 33:18And, Ry, so you told us this on Sunday, Yeah you guys made a sign or something?
- 33:22Is that right?
- 33:23Oh, yeah.
- 33:23So yeah, the women's team made a sign on a sheet, because that's what people do in college.
- 33:28And, it says,"Go Irish, love the ND swim team," and that was what the women's team put together.
- 33:35Absolutely love it.
- 33:37and the other thing that was fun for the men's team was that, the, the current trend in men's swimming is that men go to sporting...
- 33:44The men's swim teams go to sporting events in their Speedos.
- 33:46Yeah.
- 33:47yeah.
- 33:47that's the current thing you see online.
- 33:49But you guys were ahead of the curve- in some ways.
- 33:52You didn't show up in the stands in your Speedos, but you did show up in your swim caps.
- 33:56Oh.
- 33:56So- And our shirts off.
- 33:57Shirts off and your shirts off.
- 33:59it...
- 33:59You guys were trying to, I don't know, hook up with some- So th- that's Matt there in the front.
- 34:03That's Matt.
- 34:04And that's me beside him.
- 34:06Okay.
- 34:06And then I think if you go one more over, that's probably Josh Saylor, and then you can see Rich Murphy back there- Yeah, Rich Murphy there- with his hat on and he doesn't have a cap on And Kevin McGruff.
- 34:15Yeah.
- 34:15he was too cool.
- 34:16he wore the bandana.
- 34:18And we did pushups too.
- 34:19I remember when we scored,'cause- Yeah we exported that from Notre Dame Stadium.
- 34:25Mm and just to slip this in there, Pete Samson, the beat writer, he's doing a, an article about, the pushup and scoring tradition in Notre Dame Stadium that goes back probably to the'80s and'90s.
- 34:36So I spoke to him about that instance where we actually took it somewhere else,'cause normally it's a Notre Dame Stadium thing.
- 34:42But we, we- Oh, you're so right.
- 34:43Yeah.
- 34:44Yeah but we exported that to BYU Stadium, and we were doing that, doing the pushups, and then as we were like really obnoxious because we were standing out.
- 34:51The, Notre Dame was beating them, and then they announced the score of the swim meet.
- 34:54We lost, and the whole stadium erupted in laughter and was pointing at us.
- 34:57It was very humiliating.
- 34:59So we were put in our place after being obnoxious.
- 35:02doing pushups with your shirt off and- Swim caps on and swim caps.
- 35:06we were just being obnoxious, and these are well-behaved Mormons, and- we got our comeuppance.
- 35:11Yeah.
- 35:11Th- that little girl in the airport was right.
- 35:13Those Catholics.
- 35:14Yeah.
- 35:14Rice, I think I can remember you were often the designated pushup person because not only were you strong, but you- were a little bit lighter to get up in the air.
- 35:25Yeah.
- 35:25Yeah.
- 35:25And- Yeah, that's true and Gallo the next year,'cause remember how strong she was?
- 35:29Oh.
- 35:29Linda Gallo.
- 35:30Yeah.
- 35:30She could do those one-armed pushups.
- 35:32She was just- Yeah, Gallo could take me on so strong.
- 35:34Yeah.
- 35:34Yeah.
- 35:35But that's right.
- 35:35I forgot, Liz, you were up there on the pushup stand- For sure this week.
- 35:39This g- it's a common- Yeah, I've done that.
- 35:40I did that recently even, but yeah.
- 35:42Woo.
- 35:42Oh, wow.
- 35:43Takes some effort.
- 35:45Yeah.
- 35:45Common thread is the, those distance swimmers, Love it.
- 35:48Yep.
- 35:49Love it.
- 35:50What about you, Ry?
- 35:51Tell me, uh, so we talked about this on Sunday, but- what I rec- I, it actually came to my head as soon, as we were talking about this stuff, was you might have been the only person on the team who won any events in that- Oh, right meet against BYU.
- 36:05So yeah.
- 36:07What do you remember- We- about that weekend?
- 36:09so I remember at the airport our captain, Kevin McGruff, he, pilfered your airplane ticket and you were looking around as we were about- they were starting to, board.
- 36:17And you're like,"Where's my ticket?" And I was like,"Oh my God, you lost your ticket?
- 36:21Liz, you're not gonna be able to ride the plane." and McGruff was just hassling you.
- 36:24And you were almo- you weren't quite hysterical, but you were clearly alarmed, and then he fished it out of his pocket ha.
- 36:29I- And- Yeah, that did kinda drop down for me then.
- 36:31I'm like, yeah, they love to antagonize, right?
- 36:33Yeah.
- 36:34And I was unfortunately a, a good candidate for it.
- 36:37Yeah.
- 36:37So that, that's how things started off, and then of course, we get to the swim meet.
- 36:41I, it was a, a long form or a 16-event format.
- 36:44Yeah, 16-event format.
- 36:44So I did the 100 and two- Rice, I guarantee you, you swam like the 1,000 and the 400 IM.
- 36:49Yeah.
- 36:49Something, yeah.
- 36:49I probably did, and this is probably why I remember the altitude being a barrier because, you swim the 1,000 at altitude when you're used to swimming it like at sea level, and it's quite different.
- 36:59Yeah.
- 36:59For sure.
- 37:00For sure.
- 37:00Sorry to interrupt, Ry.
- 37:01Yeah, no worries.
- 37:02No, wait, so I s- I swam 100 and 200 butterfly.
- 37:05I won them.
- 37:05'cause I do have a picture.
- 37:07It was my first picture of the swimming meet standing on the blocks with me holding up two number one, fingers like,"Hey, number one." And I seem to remember going to 1:55 in the 200 fly, maybe a 52.
- 37:18And I remember at Brigham Young, I hear this like cry from the, the s- like up in the stands,"Ry." And I look up and it was a, a young woman who I grew up with in my neighborhood back in Richmond, Virginia who was on the club, the neighborhood swim team with me growing up.
- 37:31Her name was Mary Otten.
- 37:33And it was like,"Oh my gosh, Mary Otten." I just, I had forgotten that she was Mormon and ended up at BYU.
- 37:37So it's kinda cool for her to see me,"Oh, here's Ry, I remember him on the swim team growing up.
- 37:42he was pretty good." And like it was just a cool moment to see that.
- 37:45And she called her parents,"You wouldn't believe this.
- 37:46I saw Ry at the swim meet." And they called my dad, and my dad's like,"Yeah, I heard you won at the swim meet." it was kinda cool.
- 37:52A real small town moment.
- 37:54those are my, my, my big memories from the meet.
- 37:56I love it.
- 37:56I love it.
- 37:57No, it was special.
- 37:58the only one we haven't brought up is the member of our team that- Mm got kicked out of the stadium a few times.
- 38:03Does this- four times.
- 38:05Does this go on the podcast?
- 38:07Yeah.
- 38:07I have a feeling that, I think Haley- we don't have to name people we don't have to name people, but I think Haley might wanna want to have this, commemorated.
- 38:15Yeah.
- 38:16we might have had to, liberate, one of the members of the swim team who had- been graciously asked by the BYU stadium staff to tone it down a little bit.
- 38:28And, yeah, after the third time, they took him off campus somewhere where he could just relax a little bit and wait for some- folks to, come over and, maybe there were some donations of some funds that, we had all been fortunate enough to have to nourish ourselves- Yeah while we were there that, Yeah we had.
- 38:46we, I remember Kevin coming around,"Everyone listen, your stipends.""Everyone's gotta cough it up.
- 38:50We need the money to-" one, so we had to cough up our stipends for the trip to- Yeah So- Supposedly that's what it's, it was for, You never know with- Yeah, Yeah, with those guys, definitely not.
- 39:02Those guys all went into finance, we know.
- 39:04I don't know.
- 39:05Yeah.
- 39:05Can't trust those guys.
- 39:07Now- So Rose, the other sto- Rose, the other story you gotta tell is about the Zorching.
- 39:11Oh, yeah.
- 39:13Oh, that's right.
- 39:13yeah, yeah.
- 39:13Rice, you've showed that picture of us with our shirts off and our swim caps on, and, there was a, I, I, what did I call it?
- 39:21A ritual.
- 39:22It was definitely not- Yeah hazing.
- 39:24There was a ritual.
- 39:24No, that never happened.
- 39:25Never.
- 39:26Yeah.
- 39:26There was never hazing.
- 39:28No one on the swim team ever got hazed, but we had certain rituals.
- 39:31and- one of these- Rites of passage rites of passage.
- 39:34Thank you.
- 39:34Absolutely.
- 39:35Mm-hmm and I went through my rite of passage at, Lavell Edwards Stadium in that October of 1993.
- 39:43That's the other thing we haven't said.
- 39:44This is October of 1993.
- 39:46This is 33 years ago, guys.
- 39:47October 16th- Wow to be exact.
- 39:49October s- oh my gosh.
- 39:51We are so old.
- 39:53Yep.
- 39:53This is nuts.
- 39:54Yeah, right?
- 39:54I mean- this is nuts.
- 39:56Yeah.
- 39:57So yeah, so 33 years ago, yeah, I was still 18 at the time, and- eh, what happens is, a bunch of the guys on the team started kinda gathering around me in the stands and, my, naive brain was saying like,"Oh my gosh,""Everybody's kinda, hanging out.
- 40:15this is cool.
- 40:16I'm having so much fun." And then they proceeded to zorch me, which was, what, purple nurple, titty twister.
- 40:23What did you use?
- 40:23What...
- 40:24Yeah, I- You grab a pinch of flesh and you just twist, right?
- 40:27And you just twist.
- 40:27It doesn't matter if you get the nipple or not, you just grab a piece of flesh and twist.
- 40:31Yes.
- 40:32Like- Yeah.
- 40:33So I got my- 15 up- 15, 16 upperclassmen at once.
- 40:37Totally.
- 40:38Oh.
- 40:38But you brought up a good point- Zorching you Ry, having me being the first one, I think I was the first one that year.
- 40:44Oh.
- 40:45yeah.
- 40:45I got it out of the way.
- 40:46So what happens is i- as, it, when you're a freshman and as these zorching rituals go forward, and each person gets knocked out, you start getting really nervous'cause like- When's my time coming?
- 40:58When's my time coming?
- 40:59when are they coming for me?
- 41:00Yeah, totally.
- 41:01And Br- Ry, you got yours at the airport when we got back to South Bend?
- 41:04so I'd actually, if you remember, I enrolled at, at, at Notre Dame in the spring that year before.
- 41:09It was just a weird thing.
- 41:10So I got zorched at, one of the house parties, that year before.
- 41:14So I was in the clear.
- 41:15But on the way home, I think Rich Murphy got zorched on the baggage claim.
- 41:20he was just tackled.
- 41:22I remember Rich getting tackled onto the baggage claim, or it was at the baggage claim and maybe at, there was just so many people they fell onto the baggage claim.
- 41:30But Rich, I'm pretty sure was zorched in the airport at, as we were waiting for the baggage after coming home from that year.
- 41:36Oh, that's pretty sure.
- 41:37Oh my gosh.
- 41:38So- I might see Rich Murphy this weekend, so I'll have to- Then you'll have to confirm that Oh, nice yeah, I'll have to confirm it.
- 41:43Nice.
- 41:43Yeah.
- 41:44that's awesome.
- 41:45That's awesome.
- 41:46Yeah.
- 41:47I'm super psyched that, game day is gonna be in Provo on Saturday.
- 41:51yeah.
- 41:51Yeah.
- 41:52Like- That's a big deal yeah, I, it's probably never been in Provo before, and it will be interesting to see what kind of crowd they've got there.
- 42:00Because one thing that Alyssa Peterson remembers, because she has a freaking steel trap memory too, kind of like Ry, is she's like,"Don't you remember how when we were there, that the only tailgater that we could possibly find was an alumni, ND Alumni Association tent?" Yes.
- 42:19I actually remember that.
- 42:21That's great.
- 42:21Okay.
- 42:22I do remember that.
- 42:23Yeah.
- 42:24So that'll be interesting to see, what's the tailgate scene like in 2026 in Provo, Utah for- Oh, yeah a top 10 matchup.
- 42:33Yeah.
- 42:34And how is that different from 1993?
- 42:37Totally.
- 42:38I wonder if, they get all hopped up on Pixy Stix or something.
- 42:41Fun Dip.
- 42:42they're not getting hopped up on caffeine or beer, apparently.
- 42:45No.
- 42:46Yeah.
- 42:46They can't have alcohol either.
- 42:48Just mainline some sugar, Just get all riled, fired up.
- 42:52Totally.
- 42:52Get all rowdy.
- 42:53Yeah, no doubt.
- 42:55No doubt.
- 42:55You know what?
- 42:56All right.
- 42:57What's that?
- 42:57Trivia?
- 42:58Trivia time.
- 42:58Remember- Let's...
- 42:58let's go scores.
- 42:59Let's go scores first.
- 43:00Oh, Let's do that.
- 43:01All right.
- 43:02All right all right.
- 43:02Rice.
- 43:04I got Notre Dame 31, BYU 17.
- 43:07Awesome.
- 43:08Yeah?
- 43:09Yeah.
- 43:09So then- I think we're gonna show up.
- 43:11I think we're gonna play well.
- 43:12I think, they might challenge us.
- 43:14Maybe it takes a second half for us to come out and kind of game, correct some.
- 43:17But I think we're gonna pull away and I think we're gonna, score the W.
- 43:22I love it.
- 43:22Bring home the W.
- 43:23I could- Yeah I could go...
- 43:24I'd be happy with that outcome.
- 43:26Yeah.
- 43:27Ry, what do you think?
- 43:28What do you got?
- 43:28I had 17-30.
- 43:30Okay and I...
- 43:31With that 30, a weird way to get there.
- 43:33I, I feel like there's gonna be something, if not a safety, then some kind of weird maybe like a two-point conver- Some, some unusual way that we get to 30.
- 43:4217, maybe that's a late score by BYU.
- 43:45I think the issue with BYU, they're not in offensive firepower, and if we get to a certain point, 24 or something, it's just gonna be hard for them to catch up.
- 43:55Maybe they make a mistake pushing it and we get a defensive touchdown.
- 43:58but I think 30-17's a- I think that's where it's gonna be, in that area I think that's a great commentary there t- from both y'all.
- 44:06All right, Ry, let's get, give us a little science, physics TED Talk.
- 44:11Yeah.
- 44:11I, I don't know anything about the X's and O's of football any more than your average armchair person, but there are some, hard numbers you can look at that I always thought was interesting.
- 44:20you would...
- 44:21We all know that speed doesn't necessarily translate to production.
- 44:26you can look at Kyren Williams.
- 44:27He didn't have a great 40 at the combine, and he's one of the best running backs in the NFL.
- 44:32We've had speedsters who've never quite panned out, so you know, it happens.
- 44:36But in general, you would rather have a talented athlete, somebody who's fast, maybe somebody who's big.
- 44:42And so I just started going back over the last few years, and this is trivia that I ask, and we'll give people a, a few seconds before we give the answer.
- 44:51But who in the last, 20, 30 years was the fastest player for NFL football?
- 44:55Dun, dun.
- 44:56Ry, Rice, who do you got?
- 44:59Rocket is, I could only think of Rocket yeah, Rocket Yeah.
- 45:01Yeah, Rocket.
- 45:02And I don't have my...
- 45:03Maybe I do have the, I, I had it all on a note card over on my desk.
- 45:06But Rocket had a- Yeah, you did had a smoking fast, 40 time.
- 45:10He was also, if anyone remembers, he was a track athlete at Notre Dame his sophomore year.
- 45:15He had a pretty good 100 time.
- 45:18And oh, I do have it here.
- 45:19Course he did.
- 45:20So Rocket, yeah, he had a, like a 10.3 hundred, hundred, hundred yard, dash or 100 meter, whatever.
- 45:27That's impressive.
- 45:28and so I went back and was looking up the fastest players.
- 45:31You can get that information online, get some AI to pull it up for you.
- 45:35And then, like in the last, since we've been watching football a, a lot in the last, 10, 15 years, who's been the fastest player that you can remember over the last 10, 15 years?
- 45:46Oh.
- 45:46Brian Kelly, Marcus Freeman are one of the fastest that at least I remember.
- 45:50Oh, it had to be that, one of those, one of those wide receivers.
- 45:53Yeah, yep.
- 45:54oh gosh.
- 45:55Of course my 51-year-old brain is completely- Yeah creeping out here.
- 46:01Yeah, gotchu.
- 46:01I don't got anything.
- 46:02Golden?
- 46:03I- It's Will Fuller.
- 46:03Will Fuller.
- 46:04Will Fuller.
- 46:04yeah.
- 46:04Oh, yeah, he was great.
- 46:06He was fast.
- 46:07Yeah.
- 46:076.1, 184.
- 46:08Rocket was 5'10", 175.
- 46:10So these are mean runners.
- 46:12And, Will Fuller had a, a 4.32.
- 46:14He was, I think, the fastest wide receiver at the combine.
- 46:16Phew.
- 46:17and I went through, another fast one, fast guy from the last 10 years was Braden Lindsey.
- 46:23he didn't- Oh, yeah have the most productive career,'cause he was plagued with hamstring in- injuries.
- 46:27But you probably remember he did a pretty awesome jet sweep against USC one year and just smoked them all.
- 46:33He had some other, burner touchdowns.
- 46:35He was a track athlete, 10.6 in high school.
- 46:39and again, Rocket was 10.3 w- with university level training.
- 46:43So Braden was pretty damn fast.
- 46:45I think he ran a 4.4 40 according to the records I was able to pull up while at Notre Dame.
- 46:51Love- I looked this up, man.
- 46:54I had no idea he was so big.
- 46:55Six feet tall, 212 pounds.
- 46:57Yeah.
- 46:57That's a big running back.
- 46:58Yeah, he's- That's like Josh Adams height.
- 47:00And he had a 4.36, so not that much slower than Will Fuller or Rocket.
- 47:06Then I pulled up everyone on our team.
- 47:08you've got Walton, Nolan James, Aeneas Williams, Ke- Keedren Young, Javion Osborne.
- 47:14Looked up their height and weight.
- 47:16And, Aeneas Williams, 5'10", 2, 5'10", 210 pounds.
- 47:20Only a 4.46.
- 47:22I say only, but that's not blazing fast.
- 47:25So like we expect that, okay?
- 47:26He doesn't have, he doesn't have the full-out speed.
- 47:29He's a Ky- more like a Kyren Williams type.
- 47:32not fast, he's good.
- 47:33He's a good, probably a good receiver.
- 47:35He's a good receiver sort of thing.
- 47:36He's good yards after contact too, right?
- 47:38Yeah.
- 47:38Yeah.
- 47:38Yeah.
- 47:39So Walton, 5'9", 214 pounds.
- 47:43He ran a 10.6, I think his junior or senior year in high school.
- 47:48So that's up th- that's right there, that's faster than Braden Lindsey And again, Rocket was 10.34 with college training.
- 47:57So we're talking m- approaching Rocket speed, Walton is.
- 48:03if he were a track athlete or competing with that, he would probably be that fast.
- 48:07But he's 215 pounds compared to Rocket's 175.
- 48:11That is a very fast running back.
- 48:14So it translates somewhere to a 4.3, 4.4 type speed.
- 48:21So that's fast.
- 48:21that's a really fast running back.
- 48:23And we saw that on that 97 yard run.
- 48:26Mm-hmm just speeding.
- 48:27100%.
- 48:27So then I got really fun.
- 48:29I was...
- 48:29I was like, what would it feel like- if one of these guys can reach top end speed at about 25 yards?
- 48:35So Walton comes full speed through the line, he hits a hole, and you're the poor safety back there- that's staring down this guy running at you however fast, like 22 miles an hour, 214 pounds.
- 48:46What does that feel like?
- 48:48And so I got, AI to crunch some numbers.
- 48:51I wanted to see how many joules of energy was created Oh my God when a 5'9", 214 pound guy going a 4.3 40 after, coming through the hole hits you.
- 49:02and it was like,"Oh, 4,300 to 5,000 some joules." I was like, what is that?
- 49:06Give me an analogy." It said,"Imagine you have 150 pound wrecking ball, and it's dropped from a height of 20 feet.
- 49:15And imagine it hitting a wall." So you are the safety who's trying to be a wall, and 150 pound wrecking ball comes from a height of 20 feet swinging at you.
- 49:26That is the amount of energy that hits you if Walton hits you full on.
- 49:31So you're like,"Okay, he's fast.
- 49:33He's got the moves.
- 49:35But this guy can just wreck people if he hits them full on." So like safeties...
- 49:39and it's funny'cause I was walking home today listening to Marcus Freeman break down game tape.
- 49:44And they're saying,"Okay, watch this, that, and the other.
- 49:46We created this." It's really cool.
- 49:47there's like a video series on YouTube.
- 49:48You can watch, Freeman break down tape for 10 minutes, and it's really interesting.
- 49:53And he said,"I saw...
- 49:54I couldn't see how close so and so was, but when I saw that it was Walton on a safety, I was like,'Oh, that's, it's...
- 50:01Yeah, good luck to the safety.'" Yeah.
- 50:03That's right.
- 50:03Here comes the wrecking ball.
- 50:05Fre- Freeman's just"Yeah, whatever.
- 50:06Yeah, whatever." But that's when our running backs get loose,'cause our running backs are big and they're fast.
- 50:13and Freeman has recruited athletes, as we saw with Bubacar But Nolan James, he's 5'10", 215.
- 50:20He's a big dude.
- 50:21like he looks small, but that is a, like a guy you don't wanna be a, a linebacker having to try to stop coming through full speed at the line.
- 50:30And Keidron Young, who unfortunately, was injured last year, we haven't gotten to see much of him.
- 50:34we might not ever.
- 50:35He's 5'11", 234.
- 50:37Oh, good gracious.
- 50:37That's a big guy.
- 50:39So it's could we use him like an Audric Estime short yardage punch it through kind of guy?
- 50:44You remember Tommy Rees was using like a tight end to Mitch Evans, I think it was.
- 50:49Yeah.
- 50:49So we've got a really good running back room, and they've been poo-pooed'cause the first few weeks they weren't doing well.
- 50:55But, the tape is showing that the, the line is coming together.
- 50:59We...
- 50:59They seem to have figured out, what we need to do.
- 51:02so it's gonna...
- 51:03I think it's gonna be an exciting game, and the running backs- Oh, I'm so psyched are just gonna continue to produce for the rest of the year.
- 51:08Yeah.
- 51:08I'm like, I'm fired up, man.
- 51:10when you don't have to work and it's on a Saturday night and it's primetime, but not quite too late, like this is gonna be, it's gonna be fun.
- 51:17It's gonna be great.
- 51:18Yeah.
- 51:18I can't wait.
- 51:18It would be more fun if we were all in Provo together again, though.
- 51:21Oh, I'm sorry.
- 51:22I'll give you that.
- 51:22It's what?
- 51:2333 years later.
- 51:2433 years- Yeah and one day later.
- 51:27Guys, thanks so much- Yep for joining us.
- 51:29and thanks so much- No worries for doing take two here.
- 51:32I really appreciate it.
- 51:32Hell yeah.
- 51:33Let's go, baby.
- 51:34I know.
- 51:34Go Irish.
- 51:35It's great to talk to you guys tw- twice in one week.
- 51:38very special, so thank you.
- 51:39Yeah.
- 51:39Good to see you.
- 51:41Yeah.
- 51:41Awesome, awesome.
- 51:44Really appreciate them spending a little bit extra time with us.
- 51:48Always fun to talk to old teammates of mine.
- 51:52Starting 11 All right.
- 51:57All right, let's do Starting 11.
- 51:59I think we're gonna change up the format maybe after this last round.
- 52:03Yeah.
- 52:03Yeah.
- 52:03But, what we're gonna do Starting 11.
- 52:06Calvin, you're up.
- 52:07Yep.
- 52:08Have you guys picked your player?
- 52:09Oh, yeah.
- 52:09We've picked a player.
- 52:12All right, we got our player.
- 52:14Just a real quick recap of the rules of the game.
- 52:17Two of us agree on a player, and then one or two deep in the current Notre Dame roster, and the other person has 11 questions to figure out who that player is.
- 52:29All right.
- 52:30Cal, you're up.
- 52:32Is this player on offense?
- 52:34Yes.
- 52:35Yes.
- 52:37Is this player a second string?
- 52:40Yes.
- 52:42Is this player- A sophomore or lower?
- 52:48No, he's not a center fielder.
- 52:50All right.
- 52:50Is this player a skill position?
- 52:53No.
- 52:54No.
- 52:54Okay, so Dallas Prescott is out, uh, now and Strepek.
- 52:59So Am is out And we already did Devin Houston.
- 53:04Is this player Owen Striebig?
- 53:09No You said it weird.
- 53:12It's undisputable No, it's not.
- 53:13No, it's not.
- 53:14No, it's not Dude No, it's fine.
- 53:16That's not the rules.
- 53:18That's happened before.
- 53:18We've done, we've done that before.
- 53:21All right?
- 53:21Just let him guess Keep guessing, though Is this player Devin Houston?
- 53:28Yes.
- 53:28Yes.
- 53:29Nice one, man.
- 53:31That, that's who we did last week.
- 53:33Not last week.
- 53:34Yes, literally last week.
- 53:36That's who I got last week.
- 53:37Well...
- 53:40I- Well, that's- It's a trick.
- 53:43Well, it is Halloween.
- 53:44I got it in five.
- 53:45You got it in five.
- 53:46All right, yeah.
- 53:47Clearly, we gotta, we gotta revise this segment, guys.
- 53:51We gotta do something different.
- 53:52We'll change it up.
- 53:53All right?
- 53:54W- nicely done.
- 53:55Nicely done.
- 53:56All right.
- 53:56Hey, kind of a wild weekend coming up again for William and I.
- 54:00William's got two soccer games in Tennessee, so we're heading up to Tennessee, and we're probably gonna be watching the game on the road.
- 54:08My former teammate, who's associate head coach with the Tennessee Volunteer swim team, has graciously, um- Shack Gotten us two tickets for the Alabama-Tennessee game.
- 54:18So after William plays his first soccer game, we're gonna run over to Neyland, go check out that game, and get in the car and head our way towards Nashville.
- 54:26So we'll probably be watching the game in the road, which will be a blast, but- Tennessee in advance, uh, thank you, Murph.
- 54:32Tennessee.
- 54:34Ain't no place I'd rather be, baby Calvin, where are you gonna be?
- 54:40Where are you gonna be this weekend?
- 54:41I'm gonna be at home, but you know, last week I was- With who?
- 54:44Home with who?
- 54:45Me and you Mom.
- 54:46Hi, Mom.
- 54:46Yeah, but last week, you know, I was, on the field while you were, at home, so, you know, it's a little different.
- 54:54But I'm not gonna start any rivalry.
- 54:56All right.
- 54:57No.
- 54:57We're- I think we do BYU- Next week, next week we're gonna do mid-year, some mid-year grades.
- 55:01Yep, mid-year grades, and also recap BYU.
- 55:03And recap BYU.
- 55:04Yep, and, don't forget to follow us on Instagram, domer slat- or underscore and underscore sons, and send us a question at our email, domer.and.sons@gmail.com, and subscribe to us, and hit that post notification bell.
- 55:26Uh, yeah, nothing else.
