- 0:15It's time for the third hour of the Morning Show with Preston Scott Grant Allen
- 0:18running the thing over there, and I'm here doing the thing in here.
- 0:22It's Monday, October two, Show five eighteen, and I'm joined by Ira
- 0:27Chaffell, managing editor at Where You Ought to be. If you want to
- 0:31know what's going on with FSU Athletics, it's war chant dot Com. Good
- 0:34morning, Ira, How are you? I'm great, Preston, how are
- 0:37you? So? What is a guy like you do on and off weekend?
- 0:41Man? I overdosed on some college football and I don't know how.
- 0:45I don't know how you guys do it, because normally I just focus only
- 0:48on FSU. But this week I watched everything and man, I was worn
- 0:53out. Let me ask first, kind of borrowing from a theme of your
- 0:58colleague, Corey Clark, what did we learn over the weekend and thus far
- 1:04in the first month of the season about what's left on FSU schedule? Uh?
- 1:11You know, I think one thing is obviously Duke is is a legitimate
- 1:15football team. You know this is not The clemsing game is a little bit
- 1:19flukey. The fact that Clemson kept turning it over. But I think the
- 1:23fact the way they played Notre Dame, the fact that they have a game
- 1:26one until the last minute, you know, speaks volumes. This is a
- 1:30team in one week earlier, you know Notre Dame had played to the wire
- 1:33with Ohio States. So so that game, even though it's at home,
- 1:36even though you've won, you've beaten Duke every time you've ever played them,
- 1:40I think that's going to be a legitimate football game. I think I think
- 1:45you feel a little bit better about I personally think you feel a little bit
- 1:48better about the Clemson win because they looked I thought they looked really strong last
- 1:53week last weekend against Syracuse who had been undefeated. So I think there were
- 1:57some things. But there are also parts of it where I think you didn't
- 2:00over not overreact. You know, a lot of people saw LSU give up
- 2:04a thousand points it's all miss and decided that, Okay, well maybe that
- 2:08second half you can tell us you wasn't that impressive. I don't know if
- 2:10you can do that. I don't think you can overreact too much to that,
- 2:14especially since FSU played LSU a month ago in a season opener. So
- 2:17I think there are some things you can learn but I think you also can't
- 2:21overreact. How good to Miami. I think they're good. They're They're much
- 2:27improved on the on the line of scrimmage. They went out and really went
- 2:30after some offensive linemen in the transfer portal. I think their defensive line solid,
- 2:36and their quarterback has always been good. He just didn't have time.
- 2:38So I think, you know what the question for when you talk about Miami,
- 2:43though, is what are they going to look like in November, because
- 2:46you know, they have a history of looking pretty good in September and maybe
- 2:50even in October, but not always in November. So fortunately for Fulli's safe.
- 2:53They played them later in the year, and I think we have to
- 2:55see if this Miami team sticks together that long. What thoughts thus far on
- 3:00the tenure of Billy Napier at Florida. Yeah, that's a weird one,
- 3:07you know, I thought, you know, I have some close friends that
- 3:10went to Florida and are huge Florida fans, and they're pretty much done with
- 3:15him, and they they've been pretty much done with him. You know,
- 3:17I don't know, I don't know if he's you know, I look at
- 3:22the situation with Florence Satan, Mike Gorvelle and say, okay, well,
- 3:23you know there are people in year two of Mike Gorbelle who felt like they
- 3:27were done with him, and it's worked out, okay, So I usually
- 3:30kind of encourage patients. One thing that's kind of weird. One thing that's
- 3:34kind of weird to me, though, with with Napier is you know the
- 3:37way they lost to Kentucky and he was so devastated afterwards because you know,
- 3:40he thought Kentucky was more physical than Florida. They ran the ball better,
- 3:45they stopped their ball run better and all that, and and I get it,
- 3:49but you know, I think that's kind of a billy Napier wants to
- 3:51be. He wants to be like a ground and pound, physical kind of
- 3:54old school football team. And I get that, and I see the mayor
- 4:00it's in that, But I also wonder if Florida fans really want that.
- 4:02You know, I think Florida football fans want Spurrier. You know, they
- 4:06want they want you know, they they want to they want to win.
- 4:10I think they want to. They want to score a lot of points,
- 4:12they want to be high flying, and uh, I'm curious to see how
- 4:15that plays out. Even if he has some success. I'm not sure he's
- 4:18gonna want to play the style of football that they want to play, and
- 4:21uh so I'm not I'm not real sure that that's ever gonna work out.
- 4:26Yeah, I mean, ask Brett Bielima how things worked out bringing that style
- 4:29of football to the SEC. It just didn't right. Right, No,
- 4:33exactly right. And it's tough. I mean, it's it's you know,
- 4:35there's a it's not. We can laugh, we can laugh somewhat about the
- 4:41SEC and how people act like it's a different league than everywhere else. But
- 4:45the reality is there's a lot of great defensive lines in that league. There's
- 4:48a lot of great, uh you know, individual players, and so I
- 4:53don't know, I think you do have to throw the football. It's it's
- 4:55not it's not nineteen eighty three. It's twenty twenty three, and I'm curious
- 5:00I Napier is going to give a kind of quarterbacks he needs to succeed there.
- 5:10Eleven minutes past the hour, another segment here with Irisha Fellawar chant dot
- 5:14Com. I don't know what kind of time you and your team have gotten
- 5:16with Mike Norvell and any of the coaches on staff in the last week but
- 5:23what are you hearing? How did they use the time. There's a lot
- 5:27of focus on fundamentals, and I think, you know, in terms of
- 5:30on the field with the players cleaning up some of the things that have not
- 5:33been as sharp as they need to be. And I think from a from
- 5:38a coaching staff standpoint, they've been doing a lot of time really trying to
- 5:41figure out what they're what what's not clicking, especially on offense. I think,
- 5:45you know, I think that that in the Running Game is trying to
- 5:48figure out why things aren't kind of why why some of these players aren't hitting.
- 5:51I don't think they feel like the Running Game has been a disaster,
- 5:56but it just hasn't really clicked yet. And I also think they they're trying
- 6:00to figure out what Jordan's you know, what's going to get him to take
- 6:03things to another level with the offense, because Jordan's played fine, but he
- 6:08but I think there's probably a feeling that it's not clicking to the way it
- 6:13needs to. Whether that's him deciding when when to run the ball, him
- 6:15deciding when to check down, it's just some of the decisions and getting him
- 6:19in a higher comfort level. How much of Jordan Travis's injury, whatever it
- 6:27was, was contributing to his accuracy issues. I think it was a big
- 6:31part of it. I mean, I just think you look at and when
- 6:33you go back and watch some of those throws he missed, you know he
- 6:38was I think he was kind of favoring it and maybe not stepping into throws.
- 6:42But I also think some of the credit or blame needs to go to
- 6:45the receivers. You know, some of those passes, those guys have to
- 6:47come back and fight for the ball. And and so it's not always on
- 6:53the quarterbacks. Sometimes it's on the receiver, sometimes it's on the tight ends.
- 6:56And I think that that's been emphasized as well, that those guys can't
- 7:00just assume that the ball the offender's gonna let them catch the ball. They
- 7:03have to fight for that football. And I think you'll see them do that
- 7:06more going forward. Where is Jordan Travis, the offensive line, anybody else
- 7:11who was banged up. I've heard good things about Jordan. I think he's
- 7:15going to be back to full health. I think it was an injury that
- 7:18you know, needs a little bit of time, but it wasn't necessarily something
- 7:21that it's never going to be better the season. I think he's going to
- 7:25be back to full speed. I think you're gonna see what Jordan Travis normally
- 7:28looks like soon here. As far as the rest of the team, I
- 7:31think they're in decent shape. You know, the a couple of the guys
- 7:35I think are going to be dealing with stuff all season. You know,
- 7:38Maurice Smith at center. I think you know, he came back and played
- 7:42in that game against Clemson. I don't know, maybe he takes a limited
- 7:46role, uh, you know, in the Virginia Tech game, maybe comes
- 7:49back in place the ball game against Syracuse. I'm just speculating, but I
- 7:53think with him, it's going to be a situation where you're you're trying to
- 7:57get him back for were the biggest games, but maybe not really wear him
- 8:01down in these other games. I think whatever he's dealing with is something that's
- 8:05not going to be one hundred percent during the season. The big question to
- 8:09me is Robert Scott. You know he I think he's your best left tackle.
- 8:13I know there's a lot of speculation the offseason when you brought in some
- 8:16of these other offensive linemen and Bless Harris coming back from his injury. Whether
- 8:20or not Robert Scott really really is your best left tackle. I think he
- 8:24is clearly your best left tackle, and so can they get him back he's
- 8:28he really hasn't played since the opener. If he plays, I think that
- 8:31changes a lot on your offensive line. Two questions for we wrap you up
- 8:35and and let you go? I re number one if I were to suggest
- 8:39to you that the reason the running game isn't really clicking yet is sure,
- 8:43the offensive line is missing a couple of pieces, But also Jordan just has
- 8:48to run the football for those lanes to open up for the rest of him.
- 8:52He has to be a threat to run it. And I just see
- 8:54a lot of opportunities for him to pull the ball and go to the sideline
- 8:58and avoid getting here but making a lot of yards. Is that fair?
- 9:03Oh? It's one hundred percent fair. But I also think you have two
- 9:05things going on. Number one, you I think if you look back to
- 9:09last season, they lowered his CHARAC total a lot last year too, I
- 9:13mean, and the good part about that was he was able to finish the
- 9:16season and play in every game. And I think that's the goal I think
- 9:18they're gonna be. They're gonna give up some plays in the running game because
- 9:22they just want to make sure he stays healthy. But he needs to at
- 9:28least show it's a it's a possibility. I think it is. Particularly in
- 9:31the Clemson game. He was so unwilling to do it, and I think
- 9:35it was because he was injured that once Clemson knew that was not even a
- 9:39possibility, it changed how they played. You at least need to pull it
- 9:43every once in a while, not as much as he did three years ago,
- 9:46but every once in a while for sure. Lastly, you're expecting a
- 9:48comfortable win for Florida State this weekend, I am, although you know,
- 9:54Virginia Tech did show some life. They got a man against Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh
- 9:56not very good this year, and Virginia Tech does not look good. The
- 10:00one thing that Virginia Tech did this weekend I think that you just kept to
- 10:03kind of keep your eye on, is that they did really commit to this
- 10:07younger quarterback and in his running ability. And he's a big kid. He's
- 10:13six foot two, two hundred and thirty five pounds, transferred in this year
- 10:16from Baylor, didn't start the first couple of games. Now he's been starting
- 10:18and getting more comfortable, so I think he's again another big running quarterback.
- 10:24I'm sure we'll have some positive plays, but Virginia Tech overall is not a
- 10:28very good football team, and I think Florida State after the bye week should
- 10:31come out, I think, and assert themselves. All right, thanks as
- 10:33always for the time. We'll talk to you next week. Thanks Pressing,
- 10:37Take care,
