- 0:04Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The Patriots Training
- 0:12Speaker 1: Camp Cast is your source for all the news from
- 0:14Speaker 1: Patriots training camp. Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:20Speaker 1: have you covered what I miss yesterday? Now here to
- 0:22Speaker 1: review today's practice the writers of Patriots dot com. All right,
- 0:27Speaker 1: we're coming to you live from the side of Gillette Stadium,
- 0:30Speaker 1: where we just wrapped up the Patriots and Panthers first
- 0:33Speaker 1: joint practice of the summer. This is Mike Dousou joined
- 0:35Speaker 1: by Paul prlo Evmosar Patriots dot Com. Here for another
- 0:38Speaker 1: training camp cast. Get you caught up on this practice
- 0:41Speaker 1: and today, guys, tempers ran a little hot, but I
- 0:44Speaker 1: think we saw some good things out of the Patriots
- 0:46Speaker 1: offense a little bit, just a little bit of consistency.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Maybe not so much in the run game, but overall, Paul,
- 0:51Speaker 1: I felt like it was a pretty good day for
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Pats. Yeah, I thought I was most impressed with
- 0:54Speaker 1: the defense too. You know, we keep talking about you
- 0:57Speaker 1: know the defense looks good. Is that because the Patriots
- 0:59Speaker 1: offense is struggling? Well, I thought the defense today looked
- 1:01Speaker 1: just like it does in most other training camp practices.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I thought they had pretty good coverage. I thought the
- 1:07Speaker 1: defensive line in particular really controlled most of the eleven
- 1:10Speaker 1: on eleven play. I thought they had a lot of
- 1:12Speaker 1: pressure on both Bigger Mayfield and Sam Arnold. I thought
- 1:16Speaker 1: the defense was really solid and evan. For you from
- 1:18Speaker 1: the offense, what it stood out to you today, seemed
- 1:20Speaker 1: like a pretty good day for Mac and made some
- 1:22Speaker 1: nice connection, especially the DeVante Parker. This to me was
- 1:24Speaker 1: the most in rhythm the passing game has looked. It
- 1:27Speaker 1: wasn't always the most successful yet, especially on the ground,
- 1:31Speaker 1: I would say, but in terms of the passing offense,
- 1:34Speaker 1: I thought Mac looked the best, throwing the ball down
- 1:36Speaker 1: the field on time, in rhythm, hitting guys in the hands.
- 1:39Speaker 1: A couple of good deep completions to DeVante Parker early on.
- 1:43Speaker 1: They opened up with the play action period and he
- 1:45Speaker 1: was hitting guys Jacoby Myers on a cross or in
- 1:48Speaker 1: cut to Taekwon Thornton that fade down the sideline to
- 1:52Speaker 1: DeVante Parker again, got that twice in this practice. A
- 1:55Speaker 1: nice corner out to Jacoby as well later on. So
- 1:58Speaker 1: a more aggressive, more successful Mac Jones pushing the football
- 2:02Speaker 1: down the field more in this practice than I think
- 2:04Speaker 1: any other practice that we've seen all summer long. I
- 2:06Speaker 1: know Paul might disagree with me a little bit on
- 2:09Speaker 1: being so bullish on the passing offense, but I thought
- 2:11Speaker 1: in general this was as in rhythm, as in sync
- 2:15Speaker 1: as Mac Jones as looked all summer. Yeah, I think
- 2:17Speaker 1: a couple of days of it. I mean, even yesterday's reduced,
- 2:20Speaker 1: you know, sessions seemed a little bit of that. Still
- 2:22Speaker 1: didn't love what I saw out of the running game.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Weren't a lot of holes being opened up. Thought maybe,
- 2:26Speaker 1: you know, the Patriots would have an option, an opportunity
- 2:29Speaker 1: to do that. But however, we're seeing now as the
- 2:32Speaker 1: fans are getting ready for autographs. But we did see
- 2:34Speaker 1: some couple a couple of skirmishes, some people thrown out
- 2:37Speaker 1: Christian Wilkerson, Kendrick Bourne, later James Ferns among the Patriots.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I guess not totally surprising to see the tempers boil over. Paul,
- 2:45Speaker 1: you've been doing these joint practices. Not an uncommon occurrence
- 2:48Speaker 1: to see some of that. Yeah, I mean we've seen
- 2:50Speaker 1: it periodically. I thought today was a little bit more
- 2:54Speaker 1: like extended. You know, Chicago was probably the worst one
- 2:57Speaker 1: I've seen in terms of an actual incident, but this one,
- 3:00Speaker 1: it started, it boiled over, it continued. Then a couple
- 3:03Speaker 1: of plays later there was another one, and a couple
- 3:05Speaker 1: of plays after that there was another one. I thought
- 3:07Speaker 1: there were several opportunities that the coaches had to bring
- 3:09Speaker 1: their teams together sort of, you know, calm it down.
- 3:12Speaker 1: It didn't really seem like that that worked, and it
- 3:14Speaker 1: wasn't until the very end, the last couple of team
- 3:17Speaker 1: periods where it seemed like they settled down and just
- 3:20Speaker 1: and just went and played football. But you know, the
- 3:23Speaker 1: players and coaches talked at length yesterday about, you know,
- 3:26Speaker 1: the desire to see somebody different in the competitive juice flowing.
- 3:30Speaker 1: We saw her a little of that today, and that's
- 3:31Speaker 1: what I was most encouraged about, you know, for both
- 3:34Speaker 1: on both sides of the ball for the Patriots. Yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I do think the Patriots clearly had the better of
- 3:38Speaker 1: play today, both offensively and defensively. I don't think there's
- 3:41Speaker 1: any question about it. So much to look at, and
- 3:43Speaker 1: at one point there's six different group drills going on.
- 3:46Speaker 1: You don't know where to look any any last thoughts
- 3:48Speaker 1: here to take away from this practice before we take
- 3:50Speaker 1: a look at tomorrow's joint session. Yeah, it is. Looking
- 3:52Speaker 1: at my notes now about pressures, run stops, tackles for
- 3:56Speaker 1: loss for the Patriots defense. I had quite a few
- 3:59Speaker 1: of just across the board in eleven on elevens. Matthew
- 4:03Speaker 1: Judon in the backfield a bunch. I thought, Devon Gotshaw
- 4:05Speaker 1: continues to be strong in the middle. Dietrich wise had
- 4:08Speaker 1: a few pressures, and then they started bringing some of
- 4:10Speaker 1: those safety blitzes and a little bit more exotic looks
- 4:13Speaker 1: as well and getting some pressure with those. It looked
- 4:15Speaker 1: like that matchup last year in Week nine against Carolina
- 4:18Speaker 1: where the Patriots just absolutely dominated the Panthers up front
- 4:21Speaker 1: and held them to six points. This had a very
- 4:23Speaker 1: similar feel. And if you're Carolina, you're a Panthers beat
- 4:27Speaker 1: reporter us, but Carolina version of it. You come away
- 4:30Speaker 1: from this practice just I don't know what you get
- 4:32Speaker 1: from this quarterback competition right now, because neither Baker Mayfield
- 4:36Speaker 1: nor Sam Darnold practice particularly well. It looks like Baker
- 4:40Speaker 1: is high on all of his throws. It looks like
- 4:42Speaker 1: Sam Darnold is still seeing ghost set times always thrown.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So it's not a good comment, but It does put
- 4:50Speaker 1: in perspective We've been harsh and rightfully so for some
- 4:53Speaker 1: of these practices the Patriots offense, Mac Jones, how he's
- 4:57Speaker 1: looked this summer. Mac looked like the best quarterback on
- 5:00Speaker 1: the field by far out here today. Compare it to
- 5:03Speaker 1: the two starters whatever you want to call them in Carolina.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I know there's not the two best quarterbacks in the
- 5:07Speaker 1: league or anything like that, but I think it does
- 5:09Speaker 1: put some perspective on where the Patriots are and where
- 5:12Speaker 1: Mac is that he definitely outperformed two guys that are
- 5:15Speaker 1: clearly struggling in Carolina. Well, one day of joint practice
- 5:18Speaker 1: is down, a couple more to go this week we'll
- 5:20Speaker 1: have tomorrow. We will be back on Patriots Unfiltered, So
- 5:23Speaker 1: if you can't make it down here, it was a
- 5:24Speaker 1: great crowd today, lots of people down here enjoying this.
- 5:28Speaker 1: We will be live starting nine fifteen tomorrow on Patriots
- 5:31Speaker 1: dot com. So we got you covered with all of that.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So it should be another interesting day. See how the
- 5:36Speaker 1: temperature is tomorrow in terms of the tempers and if
- 5:39Speaker 1: they're able to settle in. But a good day of
- 5:41Speaker 1: work and I'm sure productive is the coaching staff is
- 5:43Speaker 1: able to get a look at the film. So that'll
- 5:45Speaker 1: do it for this edition of the camp Cast. We
- 5:46Speaker 1: will catch you tomorrow. Thank you for downloading this podcast,
