- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to Hunt's rut Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White Tailed Woods and now
- 0:08Speaker 1: your host, Spencer new Hearth. Welcome to Wired to Hunt's
- 0:15Speaker 1: rut Fresh Radio powered by First Light. I have Spencer
- 0:19Speaker 1: new Hearth and this is the kickoff episode to season
- 0:22Speaker 1: six of the miniseries. Welcome to episode four of the
- 0:41Speaker 1: Wired Hunt podcast. And this is the first episode of
- 0:45Speaker 1: season six of our rut Fresh Radio miniseries six seasons. Mark,
- 0:50Speaker 1: can you believe it? It's crazy. I can't believe what
- 0:54Speaker 1: we've been doing this that long. We're we're getting old,
- 0:56Speaker 1: my friend. Yeah, And the same conversation happened last s
- 1:00Speaker 1: at the beginning, it was like, is it season five? No,
- 1:01Speaker 1: now it's season four. Now it's season five, and it
- 1:04Speaker 1: was the same sort of realization. So season six, September
- 1:09Speaker 1: one is when this episode will drop. And this is
- 1:11Speaker 1: the earliest we have ever released a rut Fresh Radio episode. Um,
- 1:17Speaker 1: if you are not familiar with the podcast, this is
- 1:21Speaker 1: something that's going to come out every single Wednesday from
- 1:24Speaker 1: here until the end of one and on a traditional episode,
- 1:29Speaker 1: which this is not, you're going to hear a little
- 1:31Speaker 1: intro from Mark and I where we talk about what
- 1:35Speaker 1: we've seen in the woods recently and maybe some historical
- 1:39Speaker 1: patterns that we've noticed around this time of year. And
- 1:42Speaker 1: then you're gonna get interviews from four or five white
- 1:45Speaker 1: tail hunting experts, from voices that you're probably familiar with
- 1:48Speaker 1: um that span across the country, and you're gonna hear
- 1:52Speaker 1: what they've seen for the last week and what their
- 1:55Speaker 1: preview of the haunting activity to come is and some
- 1:59Speaker 1: of the things that you're gonna here talks about our
- 2:01Speaker 1: moon phases, weather patterns, crop status, browse status, hunting pressure signmaking,
- 2:07Speaker 1: anything that a whitetail hunter cares about. And you're gonna
- 2:10Speaker 1: hear from public land hunters and private land managers and
- 2:14Speaker 1: bow hunters and gun hunters and aggressive hunters and patient
- 2:17Speaker 1: hunters and mobile hunters in a tree and still hunters
- 2:20Speaker 1: on the ground and traveling hunters that are out to
- 2:22Speaker 1: state and those that are on their own turf. The
- 2:25Speaker 1: idea is to like bring you the most timely deer
- 2:28Speaker 1: reports available anywhere in our space. And this is just
- 2:33Speaker 1: you know, a preview of what's to come for the
- 2:35Speaker 1: week and what these hunters have already seen. And we're
- 2:37Speaker 1: gonna wrap the whole thing up in twenty five minutes,
- 2:39Speaker 1: so you can listen to this on your lunch break
- 2:41Speaker 1: at work, or on your commute to work, or wherever
- 2:45Speaker 1: you can find just twenty five minutes in your weekly schedule.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Mark anything to add to to what rout Fresh is, Yeah,
- 2:54Speaker 1: I would just add my goal every week will be
- 2:56Speaker 1: too stress you out by using some kind of law
- 3:00Speaker 1: drawn story to really really push it tight to that minute.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Let it and see if I can stretch out longer.
- 3:09Speaker 1: But I think you nailed it. I think you nailed that.
- 3:11Speaker 1: We we want to help people with in the field
- 3:15Speaker 1: insights that they can put into action themselves the very
- 3:18Speaker 1: next day. And uh and that's what we've been doing
- 3:21Speaker 1: now for five years, and this will be the sixth.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And I think the one thing that's a little bit
- 3:25Speaker 1: different this year, Spencer, that you know, of course, you know,
- 3:30Speaker 1: is I've got a crazier than usual travel schedule this year.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I've got nine out of state hunts, So I think
- 3:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna be gone eight or nine weeks this fall
- 3:40Speaker 1: and sometimes completely off the grid for a long period
- 3:42Speaker 1: of time. So I think there's gonna be more weeks
- 3:45Speaker 1: than usual that I'm just not going to be able
- 3:47Speaker 1: to join you for the intro, so you have the
- 3:50Speaker 1: keys to the castle. My friend. I'm gonna let you
- 3:52Speaker 1: run with this h as much as you want, and
- 3:56Speaker 1: I'll be here when I can be there. If not, um,
- 4:00Speaker 1: you know, I'm sure you will handle these episodes beautifully.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Maybe you can bring a friend along or two as well,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and uh, you know, the show will go on. So
- 4:09Speaker 1: I'm excited that we're in a position now that you
- 4:14Speaker 1: you have put together a beautiful a beautiful thing here
- 4:17Speaker 1: with Refresh Radio Spencer, and I know that the listeners
- 4:20Speaker 1: out there know you and are excited to hear from
- 4:22Speaker 1: every week. So that's the only thing that's really different. Otherwise,
- 4:24Speaker 1: we're gonna keep on getting great up to date from
- 4:28Speaker 1: the Fields reports, and uh we don't have those today,
- 4:31Speaker 1: they'll do a spencer today. Is a little bit different
- 4:33Speaker 1: because we are you know, seasons have only opened maybe
- 4:36Speaker 1: today or yesterday or tomorrow in the states that are
- 4:39Speaker 1: opening this week. But I did feel like, shoot for
- 4:42Speaker 1: people that do have a season right now at hate
- 4:45Speaker 1: Ken not to have anything for him, you know. Yeah, Yeah,
- 4:49Speaker 1: we're recording this on August thirty one, and I feel
- 4:52Speaker 1: like some of the only states open the country an
- 4:54Speaker 1: hour maybe, Like there's a very early season in Tennessee,
- 4:58Speaker 1: very early see in South Carolina. Florida of course has
- 5:02Speaker 1: has a weird brought that starts earlier than the rest
- 5:04Speaker 1: of the country. Uh. But then the day that this
- 5:07Speaker 1: episode drop September one, you have a whole bunch of
- 5:09Speaker 1: states west of the Missouri River that are opening. Um,
- 5:13Speaker 1: you have like Kentucky that opens, So this is a
- 5:17Speaker 1: podcast for them. What you're gonna miss on this episode, Like,
- 5:20Speaker 1: like we've said, you're not getting those interviews, Um, so
- 5:22Speaker 1: you're not gonna get these one to ten questions that
- 5:26Speaker 1: I ask everybody, and what that is At the beginning
- 5:29Speaker 1: of every interview I ask every guess, I say, in
- 5:32Speaker 1: the last week or so, what has been the buck
- 5:34Speaker 1: activity on a scale of one to ten? And to
- 5:36Speaker 1: the end of the interview, I asked the same question
- 5:39Speaker 1: this coming week, what do you predict the activity is
- 5:41Speaker 1: going to be on a scale of one to ten.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So hopefully if you're sort of passively listening to this episode,
- 5:46Speaker 1: you're in your garage working on some wrenches or something,
- 5:49Speaker 1: you pipe up for those two questions. UM, so you
- 5:52Speaker 1: can either get excited or feel pessimistic about the movement
- 5:57Speaker 1: to come. How do you you how do you see
- 6:02Speaker 1: people using this on a week to week basis, Spenser,
- 6:06Speaker 1: Because we've got talked to a lot of people, and
- 6:07Speaker 1: we've got to hear stories and things. And when I
- 6:09Speaker 1: hear that, you know, when I listened myself, and I
- 6:13Speaker 1: listened oftentimes when the new episodes dropped to hear all
- 6:16Speaker 1: the interviews that you do, um and it often it
- 6:20Speaker 1: doesn't necessarily make me feel pessimistic if I feel if
- 6:24Speaker 1: we hear bad reports and people, but it does change
- 6:26Speaker 1: my plans a little bit, you know, if maybe you
- 6:30Speaker 1: know there might be something new coming down the road
- 6:32Speaker 1: in the forecast, or there might be something you know,
- 6:35Speaker 1: when we get in October and we're talking about prerode
- 6:37Speaker 1: activity things and it might just be the little edge
- 6:40Speaker 1: I need to say, you know what, I do want
- 6:42Speaker 1: to get aggressive and jump in on this crazy thing
- 6:44Speaker 1: I was gonna do, or maybe you know what everyone
- 6:48Speaker 1: west to me over the last couple of days, we've
- 6:49Speaker 1: been seeing a really slow activity. Maybe I should pull
- 6:52Speaker 1: back and just hunt does and the edges tomorrow. It's
- 6:55Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. It just kind of slides my
- 6:59Speaker 1: reactions a little but this way or that, or sometimes
- 7:01Speaker 1: they'll spark a little idea that gives me this kind
- 7:05Speaker 1: of creative you know, push to try something new or
- 7:08Speaker 1: to consider this idea that so and so recommended. Um, well,
- 7:12Speaker 1: are there any other ways you've been seeing the stuff
- 7:14Speaker 1: being useful for you or your listeners now and that's
- 7:17Speaker 1: you put it really well there, Mark Um. Pessimism probably
- 7:21Speaker 1: isn't the right word for it. It's probably just adjusting
- 7:23Speaker 1: your hunting style for what's to come. If if it
- 7:26Speaker 1: is uh an episode that drops on October and you
- 7:30Speaker 1: have yet to be in the woods this fall, but
- 7:32Speaker 1: you are going to be in the woods on October
- 7:34Speaker 1: fifte and sixteenth and seventeen, hopefully what you hear from
- 7:39Speaker 1: our guests can give you uh like an idea of
- 7:43Speaker 1: what you should be doing this weekend. If you should
- 7:44Speaker 1: be really aggressive and you should be hunting and cover
- 7:47Speaker 1: around acorns or um, the weather has been stagnant um
- 7:52Speaker 1: and and it's going to be even hotter this coming weekend,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and so maybe you should do something untraditional like hunting
- 7:59Speaker 1: near water, or you should play it safe and hunting
- 8:02Speaker 1: observation stand and sort of get ready for pre rout
- 8:05Speaker 1: that's to come in a few weeks. So you're right,
- 8:07Speaker 1: it's not it's not so much about being optimistic and pessimistic.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It's just about like appropriately adjusting your hunting style. Um.
- 8:16Speaker 1: And so, because we don't have these four guests he
- 8:19Speaker 1: talked to you you this week, I sort of went back
- 8:21Speaker 1: and looked at what we've maybe heard from in other
- 8:25Speaker 1: early September episodes and what sort of success is we've
- 8:29Speaker 1: seen with those folks. And there was one thing that
- 8:32Speaker 1: really jumped out to me when I was talking to
- 8:35Speaker 1: hunters that were successful, whether it was in North Dakota
- 8:37Speaker 1: or Kentucky or Nebraska. Um, and one of them is
- 8:42Speaker 1: that they rarely entered the woods blind on September one
- 8:47Speaker 1: and then had success. UM. We we published an article
- 8:50Speaker 1: recently on the media dot com by Sam Lungri and
- 8:53Speaker 1: that talked about how to kill a bowl elk on
- 8:55Speaker 1: opening day. We also published an article from Dylan Tramp
- 8:58Speaker 1: about how to kill a white tail bucking opening day.
- 9:01Speaker 1: And it was really eye opening that the sentiment from
- 9:04Speaker 1: sort of both of them was like, you have to
- 9:06Speaker 1: know where the bulls and the box are. It's this
- 9:09Speaker 1: isn't the rout, this isn't like November six where you
- 9:12Speaker 1: can enter the woods and just like pick up on
- 9:15Speaker 1: some fresh sign and then have really good odds at
- 9:19Speaker 1: killing a deer. You need to have some intel, whether
- 9:21Speaker 1: that's from boots on the ground scouting or long distance
- 9:23Speaker 1: glassing or trail cameras or just knowing historical patterns. That
- 9:28Speaker 1: is like sort of the difference maker this time of
- 9:31Speaker 1: year between somebody like having good bucks in the area
- 9:34Speaker 1: and they kill one or they don't. Yeah, I think
- 9:38Speaker 1: you're right. This is the time for surgical strikes. This
- 9:41Speaker 1: is the time for careful thought through hunts. You know,
- 9:47Speaker 1: going in for a reason to a spot for a reason,
- 9:50Speaker 1: with a plan in place, expecting a specific movement pattern
- 9:54Speaker 1: that's definitely going to give you your best chance. There's
- 9:57Speaker 1: there's very little that willynilly movement right now. Deer doing
- 10:01Speaker 1: things and specific places for specific reasons, and you gotta
- 10:06Speaker 1: know that. You gotta know where that's at. And if
- 10:07Speaker 1: you don't know where that's that when you start your hunt,
- 10:10Speaker 1: I think you need to spend some time on the
- 10:11Speaker 1: front and figuring that out. So for example, I'm out
- 10:14Speaker 1: here on an early season white till hot myself right now,
- 10:16Speaker 1: which which I'll talk a lot more about next week.
- 10:19Speaker 1: But the first day we got into this area, we
- 10:23Speaker 1: weren't hunting, we were scouting. We got out and last
- 10:27Speaker 1: and observed, and then the next day we went in
- 10:29Speaker 1: slipped in some spots and are hanging cameras. So it's
- 10:32Speaker 1: all about getting that intail so that we can start
- 10:35Speaker 1: making thoughtful strikes. So make a really good point, I
- 10:39Speaker 1: think that is that's key. And you know the great
- 10:42Speaker 1: thing about these really really early seasons, and really a
- 10:45Speaker 1: great team about any opening day is that these deer
- 10:47Speaker 1: have not been pressured for months and months and months, right,
- 10:50Speaker 1: so they are operating normally. But that will only last
- 10:53Speaker 1: so long. So you get a handful of hunts before
- 10:55Speaker 1: they catch onto you. So you want to make sure
- 10:57Speaker 1: those first few hunts, those first few days, you know,
- 11:00Speaker 1: are are smart there can take an advantage of them,
- 11:03Speaker 1: because you know, three or four or five days in
- 11:06Speaker 1: all of a sudden, they know, hey we're getting hunted.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Time switch it up. So be smart with those first
- 11:12Speaker 1: times and take advantage of these patterns that are still there. Yeah,
- 11:17Speaker 1: and another common denominator from the early September rut fresh
- 11:22Speaker 1: successful hunts that we've talked about and this will come
- 11:25Speaker 1: as surprise, and nobody that food was a common denominator. Um.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Of course, you have your obvious food sources that any
- 11:32Speaker 1: hunter can identify, like corn or beans or hay fields.
- 11:37Speaker 1: But what are maybe some of the less obvious food
- 11:39Speaker 1: sources Mark Um, that hunter should be looking for this
- 11:42Speaker 1: time of year. You know, it's so location dependent. There's
- 11:48Speaker 1: not any one thing. But I do think a very
- 11:50Speaker 1: generality or a generality to keep in mind is simply
- 11:54Speaker 1: the importance of brows and the importance of native vegetation.
- 11:58Speaker 1: You know, there's some places that I remember one year
- 12:01Speaker 1: on a September hunt. Um, I was assuming that the
- 12:04Speaker 1: deer would be keen on alfalfa fields, but they're pretty
- 12:07Speaker 1: far away, and I saw there'd be this big, long
- 12:10Speaker 1: travel pattern back and forth thoself alfa fields. What turned
- 12:14Speaker 1: out to be the case is that there was actually
- 12:16Speaker 1: this really lush food right along the river bottom, right
- 12:19Speaker 1: on the river's edge, and more deer we're just going
- 12:22Speaker 1: and hang out right on the river edge and feeding
- 12:24Speaker 1: on that vegetation, then traveling half a mile to the alfalfa.
- 12:28Speaker 1: So that was all of a sudden something I didn't
- 12:29Speaker 1: really pick up until the end of the trip. But
- 12:31Speaker 1: once I did, well, here it is, here's the bed
- 12:34Speaker 1: defeed pattern. They're just traveling right to the edge of
- 12:36Speaker 1: the water and walking along and feeding on that. So
- 12:39Speaker 1: it's just something to keep an eye on, find out,
- 12:41Speaker 1: you know, watch the deer, watch what they're doing, observed,
- 12:44Speaker 1: and take notice of that. If there's certain types of
- 12:47Speaker 1: you know, there's certain types of things they're browsing on
- 12:50Speaker 1: more than others, go take a look at that the
- 12:52Speaker 1: next day and see if that's something you can key
- 12:54Speaker 1: in on elsewhere. Or little openings in the timber, little
- 12:58Speaker 1: spots for more stun that gets down there, and there's
- 12:59Speaker 1: a diverse mix of vegetation. Those are simple things, especially
- 13:03Speaker 1: if crops fields are not available in your spot in
- 13:06Speaker 1: your area that are worth Keevan tabs them because that's
- 13:10Speaker 1: sometimes the best too available. Another thing which super dependent
- 13:15Speaker 1: on what's going on in your area, but any kind
- 13:17Speaker 1: of mass tree, fruit, trees, per simmons, if there's anything
- 13:21Speaker 1: that's dropping early, um, you know, obviously key in on
- 13:25Speaker 1: something along lines those lives, but that would have to
- 13:27Speaker 1: be you know, what's happening in Florida will be very
- 13:29Speaker 1: different that what's happening Kentucky, what's really very different than
- 13:33Speaker 1: what's in North Dakota. So the key thing I think
- 13:35Speaker 1: is be watching and be very very attentive to what
- 13:41Speaker 1: those deer feeding on. So when you're glassing or if
- 13:44Speaker 1: you've got a camera that's overlooking the field, pay attention
- 13:47Speaker 1: to what those deer are keying in on right now.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Once you know that, then that's what you need to
- 13:53Speaker 1: key on. But you got to connect those two dots. Yeah. Um,
- 13:57Speaker 1: there's just a ton of food available right now. And
- 13:59Speaker 1: one of my favorite articles that we've published so far
- 14:01Speaker 1: in something you wrote Mark, it was ten natural food
- 14:04Speaker 1: sources every deer hunter should know and if you are
- 14:08Speaker 1: a white tail hunter in September October, you should go
- 14:10Speaker 1: check that out. Um, because everything in there, or most
- 14:15Speaker 1: of this stuff and there is relevant to hunters across
- 14:17Speaker 1: the country. They're trying to kill a white tail. There's
- 14:19Speaker 1: a ton of options right now, so it's worth knowing
- 14:22Speaker 1: what those options are besides the corn, soybeans and hay fields. Yeah. Yeah,
- 14:28Speaker 1: And I will say you know, if you do have fields,
- 14:33Speaker 1: it's it's pretty hard to beat alfalfa or clover right now.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Or if you've got green soybeans, I mean, if you
- 14:40Speaker 1: do have those, just don't forget about how effective those
- 14:43Speaker 1: can be. Yeah, and then the the third um factor
- 14:48Speaker 1: that's come up in early September successful haunts that we've
- 14:52Speaker 1: talked about in the past on Red Fresh Radio, and
- 14:55Speaker 1: this has been less of a theme, but it's still
- 14:56Speaker 1: something to consider, especially this year. But that's hunting water.
- 15:01Speaker 1: This is specifically relevant for hunters in the Dakotas or Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho,
- 15:07Speaker 1: which are also all states that have early September openers.
- 15:11Speaker 1: But if you look at the drought monitor map for
- 15:16Speaker 1: every single one of those states, pretty much anything west
- 15:18Speaker 1: of the Mississippi is in like a D three or
- 15:22Speaker 1: a D four level drought, which is like extreme level droughts.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And so maybe water hasn't really been part of your
- 15:30Speaker 1: game plan in the past when you're hunting in early
- 15:33Speaker 1: September to early October, but for hunters in that part
- 15:36Speaker 1: of the country, that should absolutely be part of the
- 15:39Speaker 1: playbook this year. You brought up a really good point
- 15:43Speaker 1: where that drought, I mean, water can be so the
- 15:48Speaker 1: effectiveness of hunting water can be so dependent on the
- 15:51Speaker 1: availability of it, right, And so when it's a rare
- 15:53Speaker 1: commopity all of a sudden really focuses that movement to
- 15:56Speaker 1: the few places where its found. So our mutual friend
- 16:00Speaker 1: Tony Peterson and uh fellow water to Hunt podcaster, actually
- 16:04Speaker 1: is doing a series the talking about water right now
- 16:07Speaker 1: on his Foundations miniseries. So if folks haven't been listening
- 16:11Speaker 1: to that, make sure you pull up the episodes of Foundations,
- 16:14Speaker 1: which to come out every Tuesday and this month, I
- 16:18Speaker 1: think this week and last week or this weekend, next
- 16:21Speaker 1: week or come out here soon. He's got several episodes
- 16:24Speaker 1: all about this very topic. So how to take advantage
- 16:26Speaker 1: of hunting water, standing water, moving water, all that kind
- 16:30Speaker 1: of stuff. So if you want to deep dive on
- 16:32Speaker 1: that aspect, tune into that because Tony is a master
- 16:35Speaker 1: using water, especially at early season public Land White Till Hunts,
- 16:38Speaker 1: He's really figured it out. Yeah, and a spoiler, but
- 16:41Speaker 1: this is something that's going to be a theme for
- 16:44Speaker 1: probably every episode going forward of Rod Fresh this year.
- 16:47Speaker 1: If you hunt left of the Mississippi River, Um, you're
- 16:51Speaker 1: probably dealing with this drought that makes an impact right
- 16:54Speaker 1: now where water sources are limited. In a few weeks
- 16:56Speaker 1: from now, we're probably going to know what the damage
- 16:59Speaker 1: has banned from e h D. A few weeks after that,
- 17:02Speaker 1: we're gonna be talking about how it's been a really
- 17:04Speaker 1: early harvest because these places didn't get a lot of rain. Um.
- 17:08Speaker 1: So that's something that, uh, despite deer huntings, maybe deer
- 17:12Speaker 1: hunters maybe not paying attention to the weather in June, July, August,
- 17:15Speaker 1: it's gonna have an impact for the rest of the fall. Yeah. Yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 1: it's a really really interesting point. And now that we've
- 17:23Speaker 1: kind of done this so many years, we can sort
- 17:25Speaker 1: of see how there are those trickled own effects where
- 17:29Speaker 1: one thing impacts the whole season kind of unexpectedly. But
- 17:33Speaker 1: now we're can I can see those patterns now you
- 17:35Speaker 1: bring that up. It's interesting. Yeah. And so looking specifically
- 17:39Speaker 1: at the forecast for this weekend, I'm not seeing anything
- 17:43Speaker 1: out of the ordinary for weather. It's not gonna be
- 17:45Speaker 1: really hot, so I can be really cold for in
- 17:47Speaker 1: these states that have the early September opener. But I
- 17:50Speaker 1: have noticed like really erratic wind directions that I normally
- 17:54Speaker 1: don't associate with this time of year. Um. And that's
- 17:57Speaker 1: something that can really benefit mobile hunters that have the
- 18:00Speaker 1: pility to hunt a southwest wind one night tear down
- 18:02Speaker 1: and then hunted northeast wind the next night, tear down,
- 18:04Speaker 1: then hunting west wind the next night. I know that's
- 18:07Speaker 1: the strategy that you're going to be using here, Mark, So, like,
- 18:10Speaker 1: what is your early September gear list look like now
- 18:15Speaker 1: versus how is it different in October and November specifically
- 18:19Speaker 1: with your mobile hunting gear. Yeah, you make a good point. Um,
- 18:24Speaker 1: I've noticed the same thing, pretty standard. Pretty um oh,
- 18:28Speaker 1: what's the we'd' looking here for? Temperatures that are all
- 18:31Speaker 1: kind of average temperatures right now pretty stable as what
- 18:34Speaker 1: I'm looking for, but the wind not as much, which
- 18:36Speaker 1: is kind of funky. And so yeah, being mobile is
- 18:39Speaker 1: a great Um, it's a great tool to have in
- 18:42Speaker 1: your toolbox when you have a hunting situation like that.
- 18:45Speaker 1: And I am, like I mentioned hunting that style right now.
- 18:49Speaker 1: I don't think my gear looks terribly different right now
- 18:52Speaker 1: than at other times of the year, with a few exceptions. Um,
- 18:55Speaker 1: but you know, the key for me is having a
- 18:57Speaker 1: good silent, lightweight pair of tin sticks and some kind
- 19:02Speaker 1: of you know, elevated hunting tools. So for me, that
- 19:05Speaker 1: means the saddle. Some people would use a mobile tree stamp,
- 19:08Speaker 1: but The big thing is just making sure that you
- 19:10Speaker 1: have that system dial so being very comfortable with getting
- 19:14Speaker 1: up in the tree quietly, quickly, and efficiently. That's something
- 19:19Speaker 1: that you know, if you've got to hunt. Come up
- 19:21Speaker 1: this weekend and you're listening to this on a Wednesday,
- 19:23Speaker 1: and you plan on being out there on Saturday and
- 19:26Speaker 1: you are gonna be hunting mobile, here's one piece of
- 19:29Speaker 1: advice I can give you. Take an a half hour
- 19:33Speaker 1: tonight or an hour tomorrow and go practice climbing up
- 19:36Speaker 1: in a tree in the yard. Do it quietly, do
- 19:38Speaker 1: it with all your gear, use the whole thing, and
- 19:42Speaker 1: just get the kinks out of your system. Make sure
- 19:44Speaker 1: you remember that, oh yeah, I gotta make sure I
- 19:45Speaker 1: clip on my stick to my right hip, and don't
- 19:47Speaker 1: forget to tie my bowl roper. All these little things
- 19:50Speaker 1: I mean for me every year, the first hunt of
- 19:53Speaker 1: the year, the first couple of hunts of the year,
- 19:55Speaker 1: there's just always something stupid. I forget, something silly that
- 19:59Speaker 1: I do wrong. So get a practice run before you
- 20:02Speaker 1: start hunting. Make sure that when you get out there
- 20:05Speaker 1: on that first hunt, that that first ton is as
- 20:06Speaker 1: good as it possibly can be. Because we alluded to earlier.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You know, we only get a few first tons of
- 20:11Speaker 1: the year, so you want to take advantage of them.
- 20:14Speaker 1: But yeah, I'm going in there with my lightweight climbing sticks,
- 20:16Speaker 1: going there in my sattle. I can slip in, you know,
- 20:20Speaker 1: just yesterday, this is what I did on our opening day.
- 20:22Speaker 1: We're slipping in quietly and got set up in a
- 20:25Speaker 1: brand new spot and didn't turn out the way I wanted.
- 20:27Speaker 1: So I pulled everything down after dark and I'm slipping
- 20:31Speaker 1: out again. And now today I can set up in
- 20:33Speaker 1: a brand new place just based off wind direction, just
- 20:36Speaker 1: based on sightings. Um. And you're not beholden to anything.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You can constantly be on the best sign with the
- 20:43Speaker 1: best wind every single day. It's it's a great way
- 20:45Speaker 1: to do it. It is a little extra work, um,
- 20:49Speaker 1: but it's one of those things that I always think
- 20:52Speaker 1: it's worth it. So highly recommend that mobile system. When
- 20:55Speaker 1: you've got wonky wins like this. It's really easy if
- 20:58Speaker 1: you're just stuck on per minute sets to say, well,
- 21:02Speaker 1: when is not quite right, But I've got that set
- 21:04Speaker 1: already set up, so might as we was hunt again. Um.
- 21:07Speaker 1: You don't have that temptation when you're constantly adjusting based
- 21:11Speaker 1: off what's there with a mobile set up, So highly
- 21:14Speaker 1: recommend it. Definitely good tool with this forecast coming up,
- 21:17Speaker 1: and you've already been in the field mark and has
- 21:20Speaker 1: some intel in a way that most hunters across the
- 21:23Speaker 1: country probably don't. So although this isn't the traditional episode
- 21:27Speaker 1: of the four guests lineup and talking to hunters from
- 21:29Speaker 1: across the nation, I do want to ask you, like,
- 21:31Speaker 1: what is your prediction for the coming week on a
- 21:34Speaker 1: scale of one to ten for buck movement. Yes, I'm
- 21:38Speaker 1: glad we get at least one of these predictions in here. Um.
- 21:41Speaker 1: You know, as you mentioned, we have a relatively unexciting forecast,
- 21:47Speaker 1: and you know, both in the West where I am,
- 21:51Speaker 1: as well as over in Kentucky, North Dakota, South Dakota.
- 21:54Speaker 1: A bunch of these states that checked their forecasts and
- 21:57Speaker 1: pretty much everyone has the same thing. Stable temper, sure's
- 22:00Speaker 1: kind of average warm stuff, no major precipitation events. UM.
- 22:06Speaker 1: So because of that, I'm not super duper. You know,
- 22:10Speaker 1: shooting the star is optimistic. I'm kind of the middle
- 22:13Speaker 1: of the road right now, So I think it's like
- 22:14Speaker 1: a five, five or six. Um. I say that because
- 22:17Speaker 1: there's no weather that makes it extra special. But at
- 22:20Speaker 1: the same time, it's not bad because this is the
- 22:22Speaker 1: beginning of the season and opening days, opening weekends, opening weeks.
- 22:26Speaker 1: You know, as we've mentioned, they can really be a
- 22:28Speaker 1: great opportunity to catch a deer unaware, a deer still
- 22:32Speaker 1: on their major bad to feed pattern, and if you
- 22:35Speaker 1: know it, this is a great time to get out
- 22:37Speaker 1: there and move. And a lot of times that these
- 22:39Speaker 1: deer they're moving a lot in daylight still regardless of
- 22:42Speaker 1: how warm it is, because they've been doing that all summer,
- 22:45Speaker 1: and until they have a reason to change, you know,
- 22:48Speaker 1: hunting pressure, or once we get later into the year,
- 22:51Speaker 1: they do start adjusting and reacting to hop whether differently.
- 22:54Speaker 1: But right now, I'm not too concerned about being eighty degrees.
- 22:57Speaker 1: That's okay. Five days, three eighty degree is you know what.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I love a coal front shirt. But I still think
- 23:03Speaker 1: I got a chance, and I think everybody else out
- 23:05Speaker 1: there does too. So you know, a five or six
- 23:07Speaker 1: to get out there, make your own stars and uh
- 23:11Speaker 1: get that, get that opening with buckets. Yeah, and you
- 23:13Speaker 1: can tell me this is hyperbolic, Mark, but I consider
- 23:17Speaker 1: like this first week in September to be maybe like
- 23:20Speaker 1: the best stretch for the next eight weeks until we
- 23:23Speaker 1: get to like October UM. And this is sort of
- 23:27Speaker 1: ignoring the like perfect cold front that might land on
- 23:31Speaker 1: October eight um, and like what your crop status is
- 23:35Speaker 1: on October fifteenth and stuff like that. But I think
- 23:39Speaker 1: this first week in September is like maybe your best
- 23:42Speaker 1: shot at a mature buck for potentially like the next
- 23:45Speaker 1: two months or so. Yeah, you know, I don't think
- 23:50Speaker 1: you're too far off. I think um, I think it
- 23:53Speaker 1: really is. And and that same thing could apply to
- 23:56Speaker 1: anyone's first week to a degree. Right, whatever the first
- 23:59Speaker 1: week you're see in the first few days of your
- 24:01Speaker 1: season will be one of your best chances until late October,
- 24:04Speaker 1: whether that's now or mid September or a little later
- 24:07Speaker 1: in September. But if you do have that first week
- 24:10Speaker 1: right now, it is probably the best of the opening
- 24:13Speaker 1: weeks because of all things we just talked about. There's
- 24:17Speaker 1: there's no better time to catch them on their bed
- 24:18Speaker 1: feed pattern. There's no better time to catch them still
- 24:21Speaker 1: in those summer kind of stupid phase, or they move
- 24:24Speaker 1: as much as they do and they're as active as
- 24:26Speaker 1: they are in that rowed up still and unaware and
- 24:29Speaker 1: and not too concerned about what's going on. So so yeah,
- 24:32Speaker 1: it is. It is a good time to be in
- 24:34Speaker 1: the tree. I think a lot of people are gonna
- 24:36Speaker 1: pass some success this week despite the kind of blah
- 24:40Speaker 1: whether well said, all right, Mark, let's do a preview
- 24:44Speaker 1: of the Wired Hunt content that's to come for the
- 24:48Speaker 1: rest of the fall. And I am like a big
- 24:51Speaker 1: Minnesota Vikings fan, but when the season ends in like January,
- 24:54Speaker 1: I don't usually start listening to Vikings podcast again until
- 24:58Speaker 1: like August. And I think there's a lot of hunters
- 25:00Speaker 1: that are in the same boat. So maybe we have
- 25:02Speaker 1: some listeners that stepped away, uh from listening to hunting
- 25:05Speaker 1: podcasts since like December, and they're just now getting back
- 25:08Speaker 1: into it and they've maybe missed all the news that
- 25:11Speaker 1: we've talked about for the last few months. So what
- 25:13Speaker 1: should folks know about for Wired to Hunt this fall?
- 25:18Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, Spencer. First off, shame on anyone who
- 25:21Speaker 1: stopped listening until now, but welcome back, um, But you
- 25:27Speaker 1: make a great point. Uh, there's been so much man,
- 25:30Speaker 1: we as you know. Obviously, we've kind of relaunched Wired
- 25:33Speaker 1: to Hunt this year in a big new way, so
- 25:36Speaker 1: there's a lot. We've got our own website now of sorts.
- 25:38Speaker 1: It's it's the v meat Eater dot com slash wired
- 25:42Speaker 1: and that's the Wired to Hunt website homepage now, and
- 25:44Speaker 1: there's dozens of new articles, lots and lots and lots
- 25:48Speaker 1: of new content from some really great hunters, covering off facets,
- 25:52Speaker 1: covering hunting, scouting, management, uh, habitat work, public land, private land,
- 25:59Speaker 1: every thing you could think. We've got to cover now.
- 26:02Speaker 1: So there's these new articles on the wire to the website.
- 26:05Speaker 1: We have the Wired to Hunt Weekly newsletter which comes
- 26:09Speaker 1: out every Monday, which has kind of an update for
- 26:12Speaker 1: me and then links to the best of our new articles.
- 26:16Speaker 1: We relaunched the wire Dunk YouTube channels. We have new
- 26:19Speaker 1: how to videos coming out every Monday there which are
- 26:23Speaker 1: coming from folks like me, Tony Peterson and guests, guest
- 26:27Speaker 1: contributors like Levi Morgan, who just posted one from Levi.
- 26:30Speaker 1: He's a like seventeen time world champion archer talking about
- 26:34Speaker 1: how he fine tunes his bowl accessories. Tony his covered
- 26:38Speaker 1: stuff about staging areas, and I've covered stuff up betting
- 26:41Speaker 1: areas recently. And these are short, punchy, helpful how to
- 26:44Speaker 1: so definitely check that out. Um, we have a new
- 26:48Speaker 1: podcast mini series which I alluded to earlier, which is
- 26:51Speaker 1: Tony's Show. So we've gotta we've gotta pack podcast schedule.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Every Tuesday is the Foundation's mini series and that's this
- 27:00Speaker 1: episode was Tony breaks down one specific foundational whitetail topic
- 27:06Speaker 1: in detail and kind of gives you like a college
- 27:09Speaker 1: masterclass lecture on that for about fifteen minutes every week
- 27:13Speaker 1: every Tuesday, and they're they're great. And then Wednesday, of
- 27:16Speaker 1: course is this one the rough Fresh podcast mini series,
- 27:19Speaker 1: would you Spencer? And then every Thursday is the main
- 27:22Speaker 1: episode with me and my guests in the kind of
- 27:25Speaker 1: long form conversations we've traditionally done. So that's the podcast.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Those are the videos. Um. You know, of course you
- 27:34Speaker 1: are helping manage a lot that's going on with the website,
- 27:37Speaker 1: and we've got a lot more contributors there. Um myself,
- 27:40Speaker 1: you play newcome Tony. We've added some new contributors people
- 27:45Speaker 1: at Bomartonic, John Eberhart, EMILEC. Kantner, uh Andy May, Tony Hansen,
- 27:50Speaker 1: El Gilstrom and more. Um, there's a lot, so so yes,
- 27:55Speaker 1: in short, be checking out what we've got going on
- 27:59Speaker 1: at Wired to Hunt because if you love white tail hunting,
- 28:02Speaker 1: we are pumping it out for as a rate that
- 28:04Speaker 1: has never been done before. Um, and it's keeping you
- 28:07Speaker 1: and me very busy, isn't it. Yeah? And then the
- 28:11Speaker 1: Back forty though is over with, So is there something
- 28:16Speaker 1: that's like taking its place, mark or anything you can
- 28:18Speaker 1: talk about on that front? Yes, good point, Back forty.
- 28:22Speaker 1: The Back forty show is done. Um, although I am
- 28:25Speaker 1: going out there and helping with some of the new
- 28:27Speaker 1: hunter mentorship programs out there. Um, so we're actually gonna
- 28:30Speaker 1: do a hunt a couple of hunts this year there
- 28:33Speaker 1: where I will be mentoring some new hunters, which would
- 28:35Speaker 1: be cool. But yeah, we're actually working on a couple
- 28:38Speaker 1: of new shows. UM. Too soon to announce all the details,
- 28:42Speaker 1: but I can tell you one of them is going
- 28:45Speaker 1: to be filmed this year and released this year, and
- 28:49Speaker 1: that is actually gonna feature YouTube. My friend, you and
- 28:51Speaker 1: me and a couple of our friends will be going
- 28:54Speaker 1: and chasing some running white tails across the country and
- 28:58Speaker 1: we will be documenting that for a new show that
- 29:02Speaker 1: super excited about that will be coming out later this year.
- 29:05Speaker 1: So stay tuned. You will have some some exciting time
- 29:09Speaker 1: in the tree or in the field with Spencer new
- 29:12Speaker 1: heart to watch very soon. So not only so you
- 29:15Speaker 1: get to watch Spencer in his apron took an up
- 29:18Speaker 1: tasty coyote me, you can now watch Spencer chasing white
- 29:21Speaker 1: tails so big hear my friend, I'm stoked. It's it's
- 29:25Speaker 1: the thing I have been most excited about all year
- 29:28Speaker 1: from medory content, So I'm really excited to get started
- 29:32Speaker 1: on that. But the takeaway messages that there is like
- 29:34Speaker 1: an overwhelming amount of Wired Hunt content being made. Um
- 29:39Speaker 1: whether you want to read what we have to say,
- 29:42Speaker 1: listen to what we have to say, or watch this
- 29:44Speaker 1: new stuff. Uh there there is more than ever. And
- 29:49Speaker 1: then specific assignments Mark if if you're hitting the woods
- 29:52Speaker 1: this weekend, I want you to go to the media
- 29:55Speaker 1: dot com backslash Wired and to check out some articles
- 29:58Speaker 1: that we have if you are going to be hunting
- 30:00Speaker 1: this weekend, we have some really useful material like how
- 30:03Speaker 1: to kill an early season buck in September from Tony Peterson,
- 30:06Speaker 1: the best setups for killing a Velvet buck from Tony Peterson,
- 30:09Speaker 1: how to kill a white tail buck in Opening Day
- 30:11Speaker 1: from Dylan Tramp, and how to kill a white tail
- 30:13Speaker 1: buck hunting water, which we talked about earlier. Mark, why
- 30:16Speaker 1: that's gonna be so relevant again from Tony Peterson. Now,
- 30:19Speaker 1: if you don't have an opener this weekend, say you
- 30:21Speaker 1: gotta wait like another four or five or six weeks.
- 30:24Speaker 1: The hunters that can't hunt quite yet, we have a
- 30:27Speaker 1: ton of useful material for you as well, like a
- 30:30Speaker 1: Beaumartonic piece on how to how to eat scout big
- 30:33Speaker 1: woods for white tails, the best archery advice I've ever
- 30:37Speaker 1: gotten from Mark Kenyan, how to chum white tails, which
- 30:40Speaker 1: is something that is very seasonal right now from Alex Gillstrom.
- 30:43Speaker 1: And then three mods that will improve your mobile hunting
- 30:45Speaker 1: setup from Andy May. Now those are are written things
- 30:50Speaker 1: that are gonna help folks out right. Now, what about
- 30:52Speaker 1: Mark for old videos or old podcasts that you would
- 30:55Speaker 1: recommend for white tail hunters in early September. Yeah, h
- 31:03Speaker 1: you got a lot there on the written side. And
- 31:05Speaker 1: it's funny you bring it up because I actually was
- 31:07Speaker 1: working on a new episode of the wire Time podcast.
- 31:10Speaker 1: It's gonna go out tomorrow, So if you're listening to
- 31:13Speaker 1: them on Wednesday on Thursday, you're gonna hear this new
- 31:16Speaker 1: episode that I'm working on, and I was going to
- 31:18Speaker 1: do a compilation episode in which I go back and
- 31:21Speaker 1: pull all of the best insights from previous podcasts about
- 31:25Speaker 1: Honey in September, because I thought for sure there must
- 31:28Speaker 1: be a lot of great stuff that we could point
- 31:29Speaker 1: back to. And I went and looked, and we didn't
- 31:31Speaker 1: have anything. I have no good September podcasts, so I
- 31:36Speaker 1: don't have anything good to point people towards. But I
- 31:39Speaker 1: do I can tell you that we created new stuff
- 31:43Speaker 1: for tomorrow. So everything you know what we covered here
- 31:46Speaker 1: today is going to be like really nice appatizer for
- 31:49Speaker 1: tomorrow's episode in which we do a really deep dive
- 31:53Speaker 1: into a bunch of these topics with A self and
- 31:56Speaker 1: Tony Peterson and four other guests. So we kind of
- 32:00Speaker 1: have a best of September full month strategy conversation that
- 32:06Speaker 1: I think, Um, if you if you got excited what
- 32:08Speaker 1: we're talking about here today, you're really gonna like tomorrow's
- 32:11Speaker 1: as we get kind of an expanded view of all
- 32:14Speaker 1: these ideas and more so, So I would just stay
- 32:16Speaker 1: tune in for our main episode coming in hot It's
- 32:19Speaker 1: called Mastering September, So tune into that as soon as
- 32:23Speaker 1: it drops. I like it. That is going to be
- 32:25Speaker 1: a fun listen any other final words of wisdom Mark
- 32:28Speaker 1: before we get out of here. You know, the only
- 32:31Speaker 1: thing I would say is you listed a whole bunch
- 32:33Speaker 1: of homework for us UM with all those articles sensor. Uh,
- 32:38Speaker 1: and that's I love it. I think we should drop
- 32:41Speaker 1: all the links for those in the show description so
- 32:45Speaker 1: that people can have a place to go find them.
- 32:47Speaker 1: So let's try to do that. Let's try to put
- 32:50Speaker 1: this in the show notes. Like so if you were
- 32:52Speaker 1: to go to Spotify you click the link for the information,
- 32:55Speaker 1: or if you just go to the podcast page on
- 32:58Speaker 1: our website, the media to dot com and navigate to
- 33:01Speaker 1: this episode, you know website, you would be able to
- 33:05Speaker 1: see the links so that you know, I don't think
- 33:07Speaker 1: anyone's can remember all those nine different articles, but just
- 33:09Speaker 1: go to the website to the podcast for this episode,
- 33:13Speaker 1: you'll see the links there and there's all the reading
- 33:14Speaker 1: that Spencer mentioned. I think that's probably the easiest way
- 33:17Speaker 1: for people to do that, don't you. Yes, I like it.
- 33:20Speaker 1: That is something that we will try to do on
- 33:22Speaker 1: every episode is drop some relevant links in the description. Uh.
- 33:26Speaker 1: And I genuinely mean it. That these are like some
- 33:29Speaker 1: of the best white tailed white tail killers I know. UM,
- 33:32Speaker 1: and they're writing about their specialty, whether it's Tony Peterson
- 33:36Speaker 1: hunting water Baumartinicke scouting big woods UM or Andy May
- 33:41Speaker 1: talking about mods to a mobile hunting setup. UM. I'm
- 33:46Speaker 1: really excited about this content. To go to the show
- 33:48Speaker 1: notes and you'll find what we have available there. Um
- 33:52Speaker 1: alrt Mark, Well, let's get out here. Good luck in
- 33:55Speaker 1: the woods this weekend, and until we talk next time,
- 33:58Speaker 1: stay Wired to Hunt.
