- 0:00Speaker 1: Here we go on our last interview here on Accelerate
- 0:03Speaker 1: at the Solana event.
- 0:04Speaker 2: It's been an absolute joy with everyone.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hopefully you guys have enjoyed these videos and today it's
- 0:09Speaker 1: going to be fun because we've got an ETF king
- 0:12Speaker 1: in the house, we'll call it, and that's twenty one
- 0:14Speaker 1: Shares coming in Duncan.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Nice to see you, how a right, thank you well,
- 0:17Speaker 2: thanks for having me so twenty one Shares.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Not a lot of people are fully aware in the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Solona community about what ETFs have been doing, but there
- 0:26Speaker 1: has been a lot of activity in this space. Twenty
- 0:29Speaker 1: one Shares one of the i would say more innovative
- 0:32Speaker 1: companies that have been able to kind of lead the charge.
- 0:35Speaker 1: What are you guys up to right now that you
- 0:37Speaker 1: can say, hey, here's something new or here's where we
- 0:40Speaker 1: think the market's going.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Absolutely so yeah. I mean ETFs have been around for
- 0:44Speaker 3: a couple of years in the US and ETPs for
- 0:47Speaker 3: probably eight years longer in Europe. Right what we're doing
- 0:51Speaker 3: now is looking at new assets to bring to market.
- 0:53Speaker 3: So what's new for the investor? They have bitcoin, you know,
- 0:57Speaker 3: they have e Solana. What is is what's the next
- 1:00Speaker 3: asset that they should be looking at SURE and trying
- 1:03Speaker 3: to bring it in an innovative way to the end investor.
- 1:07Speaker 3: So single coins, baskets active all on the cards?
- 1:12Speaker 2: Do you when you look at it?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Because right now it's been the single token ets that
- 1:16Speaker 1: have been very popular here in the US, whether it's
- 1:19Speaker 1: a THEEUM, what we've seen with obviously the success on
- 1:21Speaker 1: bitcoin and now even XRP and Hedera have all started
- 1:25Speaker 1: to go out in many of these products. When you
- 1:28Speaker 1: look at that and the success that we've seen and
- 1:31Speaker 1: no clarity and we'll talk about then the second. Has
- 1:34Speaker 1: this been an appetite that has mostly been driven by
- 1:37Speaker 1: institutional capital?
- 1:39Speaker 3: I think it's a mix and it really depends on
- 1:41Speaker 3: which issuers offering which product. Some issurers are stronger with
- 1:45Speaker 3: the advisor, community site, retail, some of the institutions, and
- 1:49Speaker 3: I would say there's been quite a bit of pent
- 1:51Speaker 3: up demand for these products. We also see the whales
- 1:55Speaker 3: moving across SURE kind of interesting, like you think that
- 1:58Speaker 3: they would be like the the natives, the maxis they
- 2:01Speaker 3: want to hold crypto easier to hold an ETF in
- 2:03Speaker 3: many cases.
- 2:05Speaker 1: What do you make of these new products that are
- 2:06Speaker 1: being launched? You look at micro strategy we've had their
- 2:10Speaker 1: team on. Now they're getting into more structured instruments. Stretch
- 2:15Speaker 1: is a good example of one. Do you think we'll
- 2:18Speaker 1: start to see more dynamics around those kinds of financial
- 2:21Speaker 1: instruments flooding the market or do you think it's going
- 2:25Speaker 1: to take some time for those kind of things to
- 2:26Speaker 1: take part.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I think we'll see more of them for sure. I
- 2:29Speaker 3: think the STRC the preferred chair of strategy is a
- 2:33Speaker 3: representation of I think the demand that we have now
- 2:35Speaker 3: from more types of exposure within the crypto ecosystem. So
- 2:39Speaker 3: this is a yield product. We see yield based ETFs
- 2:42Speaker 3: coming out as well, and I think that just reflects
- 2:45Speaker 3: where the market is going. They want more than just
- 2:48Speaker 3: delta one spot exposure.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yeah, obviously we have seen the success mostly leaning into
- 2:55Speaker 1: structured capital. We also are seeing to your point where
- 3:00Speaker 1: and some retail starting to navigate in this. Do you
- 3:03Speaker 1: think that has been held back by what has been
- 3:07Speaker 1: really been dictated to the market around regulation. Now Clarity
- 3:11Speaker 1: gets a little bit of green light. We're not there yet,
- 3:15Speaker 1: but it looks like we might have a markup. Is
- 3:17Speaker 1: that the maybe the thing that has been holding the
- 3:21Speaker 1: back the market from really going all in or do
- 3:24Speaker 1: you think it's more of an investment strategy thesis.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I mean, I think the health of the market also
- 3:33Speaker 3: will result in sure the flow is coming in and out.
- 3:36Speaker 3: I wouldn't say retail have held back. What I think
- 3:38Speaker 3: is that there have been blockers in the way. Not
- 3:40Speaker 3: all intermediary companies have been comfortable offering crypto exposure crypto
- 3:45Speaker 3: ets and with things like Clarity, it's just an indication
- 3:50Speaker 3: that the powers that we are supportive of the asset
- 3:54Speaker 3: class that will give confidence to those intermediary companies the platforms,
- 3:59Speaker 3: the wirehouse is to offer crypto ETFs to the end
- 4:02Speaker 3: investors and then we see.
- 4:04Speaker 2: The flow well.
- 4:05Speaker 1: And this also starts to open up the coffers for
- 4:09Speaker 1: a lot of the private investment communities out there, family offices,
- 4:12Speaker 1: private capital. What we'll see in some of these investment funds, retirements, etc.
- 4:18Speaker 1: That could really play into this. That is a big
- 4:21Speaker 1: I think that is going to be one of the
- 4:23Speaker 1: biggest potential market booms that we'll see moving into the market.
- 4:26Speaker 2: But is there any other.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Area that you think could become maybe a unicorn in
- 4:31Speaker 1: terms of an opportunity of investing in digital assets that
- 4:35Speaker 1: maybe hasn't been really talked about.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I think decentralized exchanges are a big theme right now.
- 4:42Speaker 3: We're seeing a lot of interest in getting exposure to that.
- 4:45Speaker 3: So hyper liquid would be one name I would call out.
- 4:49Speaker 3: We just launched a leverage, the hyper liquid or hype
- 4:52Speaker 3: ETF in the US, and it's completely different.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Profile in terms of the investor.
- 4:58Speaker 3: For the investor and for the asset. It's an asset,
- 5:01Speaker 3: it's a you know, a platform that can make money
- 5:04Speaker 3: in good and bad markets because it makes money from volatility,
- 5:07Speaker 3: from trading, and so again it's another piece for an
- 5:12Speaker 3: investor's portfolio that they don't have exposure.
- 5:14Speaker 1: To now well, and I think you're going to see
- 5:16Speaker 1: a lot of the hype type projects that start to
- 5:21Speaker 1: really innovate now that we've got more structure, that could
- 5:25Speaker 1: create more hyper liquid type companies out there for sure.
- 5:28Speaker 1: With that being the case, how do you guys select
- 5:32Speaker 1: what you choose to put into an ETF?
- 5:34Speaker 3: Is there?
- 5:34Speaker 2: What's the process?
- 5:35Speaker 3: Well, we're fortunate to have quite a large research team,
- 5:38Speaker 3: a large research team, a large capital markets team as well,
- 5:41Speaker 3: who understand the space very well. It's down to client demands.
- 5:46Speaker 3: It's down to the view, forward looking view of the
- 5:49Speaker 3: research team and our kind of network as well. So
- 5:54Speaker 3: the service providers, liquidity providers, their view on the market,
- 5:58Speaker 3: their big input to how we decide what to take
- 6:01Speaker 3: in the market.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yeah, what about you know, the amount of capital deployment.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Many people have said, listen, money markets, We're seeing trillions
- 6:09Speaker 1: and trillions that could be deployed, depending on what percentage
- 6:13Speaker 1: of a portfolio, depending on what you.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Know investment advisor you talk to.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Some will say it's one percent, some say as much
- 6:20Speaker 1: as five percent.
- 6:22Speaker 2: You know, I was listening to Arrington the other day.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Then you look at you know, Bells, there's so many
- 6:29Speaker 1: that have kind of gone this direction of more in
- 6:31Speaker 1: the tune of maybe a five and plus percent deployment
- 6:36Speaker 1: into digital ad Do you think that's a reality?
- 6:39Speaker 3: I think on average around five percent is probably right.
- 6:42Speaker 3: But it really depends on the investor, the the risk
- 6:45Speaker 3: and reward trade off that they have, and the assets.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Don't forget that bitcoin has a volatility of other assets.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Therefore the sizing would would be reflecting book profect.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It was Mike a digital digital h he.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I could not see fathom that kind of deployment in
- 7:07Speaker 1: the environment that we're in right now, because it seems
- 7:09Speaker 1: like right now it's a very not even a walk
- 7:12Speaker 1: before you run, it's a crawl before you run kind
- 7:14Speaker 1: of thing. Do you think that's something that can happen
- 7:18Speaker 1: in the next twelve months, next two years?
- 7:21Speaker 2: What is the market?
- 7:22Speaker 3: I mean the market today is although we've seen a
- 7:25Speaker 3: bit of a recovery more in the last few days,
- 7:28Speaker 3: it is a bit more risk off. What I'd say
- 7:30Speaker 3: is a lot of leverages come out to crypto. Okay,
- 7:33Speaker 3: so we haven't seen that in other asset classes. So
- 7:36Speaker 3: I would say that crypto looks like a more attractive
- 7:39Speaker 3: place to put your money than equities today. If we
- 7:43Speaker 3: see an escalation of things in the Middle East.
- 7:45Speaker 2: We are at seventy three hundred right now in the
- 7:46Speaker 2: S and P.
- 7:47Speaker 1: So yeah, that's a good point to the sense of
- 7:51Speaker 1: does it continue to go up?
- 7:52Speaker 2: Will you see a rotation of capital?
- 7:54Speaker 1: We saw that coming out of metals into basically S
- 7:57Speaker 1: and P five hundred, that of course could start to
- 8:00Speaker 1: move into risk assets and digital assets being.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Big part of that.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Any kind of products that you feel are next up that.
- 8:08Speaker 2: You guys could talk about the ets.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I mean, you look at traditional traditional finance and ETFs
- 8:16Speaker 3: and the way that it's moving from passive to active.
- 8:21Speaker 3: We see the same in crypto ETFs. Right. We think active,
- 8:25Speaker 3: actively managed funds, actively managed products in crypto are going
- 8:29Speaker 3: to be a big thing over the coming years, and
- 8:31Speaker 3: it's something that we are paying close attention to and
- 8:34Speaker 3: working on internally well.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And I think the concern right now is what is
- 8:37Speaker 1: going to be a yield product coming out of stable coins.
- 8:41Speaker 2: We've seen a large amount.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Of stable well, if you look at the two market
- 8:44Speaker 1: caps of the big players, Tether and Circle, there's been
- 8:48Speaker 1: nothing but upward growth there. I mean, Taylor is constantly
- 8:51Speaker 1: menting new stable coins. But my question is if the
- 8:55Speaker 1: yield products aren't quite as juicy, does it change the
- 8:59Speaker 1: way someone holds conservative capital and they really really reconsider
- 9:05Speaker 1: their deployment strategy instead of going into stable coins and
- 9:08Speaker 1: maybe trying to do a loop or putting it into
- 9:11Speaker 1: something like a gito soul in Delido through.
- 9:15Speaker 3: The interesting options. I think the let's not forget that
- 9:19Speaker 3: the main users of stable coins today are perfectly happy
- 9:23Speaker 3: not having yields. There's a utility to holding a stable coin,
- 9:25Speaker 3: which is liquidity and the easy movement of that of
- 9:29Speaker 3: that asset and so it has product market fits. What
- 9:33Speaker 3: the what we're looking at for with yield offerings from
- 9:37Speaker 3: stable coins is opening up to a much broader market
- 9:40Speaker 3: than exists today.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Well, I think that's Uh, that's the big win right there,
- 9:45Speaker 1: because it's gonna really start to make people think about
- 9:47Speaker 1: digital assets differently and maybe for the first time, say hey,
- 9:51Speaker 1: this really needs to be like a stock portfolio.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I mean, if we run an active mendate, we want
- 9:57Speaker 3: to include if we've get a cash asset, we would
- 9:59Speaker 3: prefer cash as sure the yields. It's better for the investor.
- 10:03Speaker 2: If you looked.
- 10:04Speaker 1: At the market over the next year. Last question, and
- 10:08Speaker 1: you're concerned with anything right now from a macro environment, yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 1: are you watching what the FED is doing? Are you
- 10:15Speaker 1: looking at current inflation here in the US? That dictates
- 10:18Speaker 1: how you guys are approaching the market.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Very much in our view, in the research team's view
- 10:24Speaker 3: and the strategy team's view on the market, and how
- 10:26Speaker 3: we talk to clients. I would say the like everybody,
- 10:29Speaker 3: we're paying close attention to what's happening with Iran and
- 10:32Speaker 3: the Straits. If we see a continued blockade of that
- 10:36Speaker 3: and prices at the pump increase the impact of inflation,
- 10:41Speaker 3: and then the decisions that people need to make on
- 10:44Speaker 3: interest rates will usually affect crypto prices, risk assets in general.
- 10:50Speaker 3: So it's something we're paying attention to. I think the
- 10:53Speaker 3: jury's out right now on which way that's going to go,
- 10:57Speaker 3: because there'll be difficult decisions to make.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Well.
- 10:59Speaker 1: It's it's an interesting conundrum because you you have a
- 11:03Speaker 1: retail investor in crypto that has come through maybe all
- 11:07Speaker 1: the way from the twenty seventeen bull runs, twenty one
- 11:10Speaker 1: bull runs. They're now, you know, going through this most
- 11:14Speaker 1: recent bull run with bitcoin hitting an all time high
- 11:17Speaker 1: around one twenty five, and you know, that's a completely
- 11:21Speaker 1: different frame of investor completely than what we've seen on
- 11:26Speaker 1: the S and P five.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Hundred, which is very different mindset, very different cost spaces.
- 11:29Speaker 3: There's like two different markets absolutely, and I think we
- 11:32Speaker 3: have seen pretty stable flows for ETFs crypto ETFs. As
- 11:38Speaker 3: a result, we had a couple of months and negative
- 11:40Speaker 3: flows in the US. Europe's been pretty consistent, okay, small
- 11:44Speaker 3: positive flows. It's now starting to turn, so we're seeing
- 11:47Speaker 3: money come back into the base.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Listen.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I talked to Eric boushunas many times Jeff Sayferd about this.
- 11:53Speaker 1: They're you know, the Bluebird Twins for ETFs, and they
- 11:57Speaker 1: just keep telling me, Paul, this is gonna there's gonna
- 11:59Speaker 1: be so many of these out there, it's going to
- 12:02Speaker 1: be untrackable almost in the sense of where these digital
- 12:05Speaker 1: assets are starting to move. So this market is definitely
- 12:07Speaker 1: heating up. Duncan, thanks for coming in today.
- 12:09Speaker 2: We appreciate it.
