- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:11Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with my friend Alana Rizzo.
- 0:13Speaker 2: We're gonna take you through the baseball world.
- 0:16Speaker 1: In the next twenty six minutes or so. Alana, we
- 0:19Speaker 1: have a lot to talk about as always.
- 0:21Speaker 2: And let's start with the biggest story on the game.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Show Hao Tani.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Yeah, Ken, Great to be with you as always on
- 0:28Speaker 3: this Thursday. Let's get into the lead powered by Game Changer.
- 0:31Speaker 3: More on Game Changer in a moment you're talking about
- 0:33Speaker 3: show Heyo Tani, Ken, Should he have more time to
- 0:38Speaker 3: warm up? This is a topic of conversation, but you
- 0:40Speaker 3: have a great explanation.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Yes, he should have more time, and he gets more
- 0:44Speaker 1: time because in innings, when he is participating offensively, he
- 0:49Speaker 1: needs more time to get back.
- 0:51Speaker 4: To the mound.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Now, what happened yesterday in Toronto got some attention because
- 0:56Speaker 1: you saw early in the game George Springer kind of
- 0:59Speaker 1: asking the umpire Dan Bollino, what was going on, and
- 1:01Speaker 1: it looked like he might be complaining. But I was
- 1:05Speaker 1: told by two people directly involved this morning that Springer
- 1:09Speaker 1: was not complaining at all. He was merely asking for
- 1:12Speaker 1: clarification that Otani indeed gets more time beyond the normal
- 1:16Speaker 1: two minute break between innings. So this was not a
- 1:19Speaker 1: reprise of the World Series last year when in Game
- 1:22Speaker 1: seven John Schneider, the manager of the Blue Jays, was
- 1:25Speaker 1: definitely complaining about Otani taking too much time to get
- 1:29Speaker 1: out there. This was merely a case in which the
- 1:32Speaker 1: Blue Jays are in this case, Springer wanted clarification.
- 1:35Speaker 2: No big deal there at all.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Now, the bigger question with Otani for me Alana is
- 1:41Speaker 1: something he said after the game yesterday about.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Not feeling so great on the mound.
- 1:45Speaker 1: He was vague about it. He didn't say anything was
- 1:47Speaker 1: physically wrong. He just said I didn't feel my normal self.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Pictures go through this all the time. Nobody feels one
- 1:54Speaker 1: hundred percent in all thirty starts, or whatever a pictuer
- 1:57Speaker 1: might make. But it raises the question that one we've
- 2:01Speaker 1: been all asking, can this guy pitch enough this season
- 2:05Speaker 1: to win a cy young he's already getting ample time
- 2:09Speaker 1: between starts?
- 2:11Speaker 3: Is this uncharted territory? Ken? I wanted to ask you,
- 2:14Speaker 3: we talked about it earlier before the show. I mean,
- 2:16Speaker 3: this is a situation where this is a unique player.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I mean, we don't have a player that plays on
- 2:20Speaker 3: both sides of the ball to the level that show, Hey,
- 2:23Speaker 3: O Tani, does I mean is this just a going
- 2:26Speaker 3: forward basis. We're just going to have to wait and see.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Relative to the time between innings, it seems to me
- 2:33Speaker 1: that's been pretty much addressed, and yes, in certain cases,
- 2:38Speaker 1: umpires are going to give him the grace that Dodgers
- 2:41Speaker 1: manager Dave Roberts was talking about after yesterday's game. Basically,
- 2:46Speaker 1: there are practical elements here. If the guy needs more
- 2:48Speaker 1: time on a little bit more time, as long as
- 2:50Speaker 1: he's not abusing it, and in Game seven last year
- 2:53Speaker 1: it was borderline in my opinion, But as long as
- 2:55Speaker 1: he's not abusing it, that's fine. Now, as far as
- 2:57Speaker 1: what I think you're asking about relative to can he
- 3:02Speaker 1: sustain a full picture's worklowly going forward, he's done it before,
- 3:06Speaker 1: and he's placed well on the side young voting before.
- 3:09Speaker 1: But of course he's getting older, he's coming off a
- 3:12Speaker 1: second surgery.
- 3:13Speaker 2: It's been some time now.
- 3:14Speaker 1: But the question of whether he can sustain an end
- 3:18Speaker 1: still be ready for the postseason, which is all really
- 3:20Speaker 1: the Dodgers care about, that is a fair question, and
- 3:24Speaker 1: it's something that Alani are absolutely right about. It is
- 3:28Speaker 1: uncharted territory, and we don't know if Joe hae Otani
- 3:31Speaker 1: is going to be able to do this to the
- 3:33Speaker 1: full extent that maybe fans want to see, maybe even
- 3:37Speaker 1: the Dodgers want to see.
- 3:38Speaker 2: But at the same time, he's still.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Pitched yesterday extremely well. No earn runs in six innings,
- 3:44Speaker 1: one run.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Overall, this guy is.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Just absolute marvel, remains that way, and honestly, it's going
- 3:53Speaker 1: to be fascinating to see just how he handles everything
- 3:55Speaker 1: this year, as it's fascinating with him every year.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Ken, Before we move on here in the lead, one
- 4:00Speaker 3: quick question for you. Do we have collective amnesia when
- 4:04Speaker 3: it comes to this in the fact that NL pitchers
- 4:06Speaker 3: were also batters until very recently? Are we thinking about
- 4:10Speaker 3: that side of this coin.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yes, we should be, and you're absolutely right, Alt, and
- 4:15Speaker 1: this is not exactly something new in the game, new
- 4:18Speaker 1: in recent.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Years, because of course now both leagues have.
- 4:21Speaker 1: The DH But I don't remember if this was ever
- 4:24Speaker 1: an issue in the past. But if you've got a
- 4:26Speaker 1: picture on the basis wearing a protective shin guard or whatever,
- 4:30Speaker 1: he might need a little bit more time. It's the
- 4:33Speaker 1: umpire is thinking practically here and just trying to do
- 4:36Speaker 1: the common sense thing. And that applies to Autani as well.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You don't want to rush him or anything like that.
- 4:42Speaker 1: There have been complaints in the past. I imagine that
- 4:45Speaker 1: it will be in the future if indeed he pushes
- 4:48Speaker 1: the issue.
- 4:49Speaker 2: But that wasn't the case yesterday in Toronto.
- 4:52Speaker 3: All right, don't forget guys, get those questions in for Ken.
- 4:55Speaker 3: We're gonna have Grill and Ken coming up momentarily. But
- 4:57Speaker 3: another bit of news. It was expected, but it has
- 5:00Speaker 3: finally happened. It is official. The Connor Griffin extension with
- 5:04Speaker 3: the Pittsburgh Pirates a record, a team record, nine year,
- 5:08Speaker 3: one hundred and forty million dollars deal. Good for the Buckoes,
- 5:12Speaker 3: good for Griffin Ken.
- 5:14Speaker 1: That's what I wrote about Alana in The Athletic and
- 5:17Speaker 1: the reason I say it's good for Griffin.
- 5:19Speaker 2: It's obviously good for the Bugos. We know that they've
- 5:22Speaker 2: locked the guy up for nine years. Great. It's a
- 5:24Speaker 2: team that loses its stars generally.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But for Griffin, it's a little bit different than some
- 5:29Speaker 1: of these other extensions that we see for young players
- 5:32Speaker 1: that occasionally you'll hear griping about from player representatives, agents,
- 5:36Speaker 1: union people, whatever. And the issue with Griffin was always
- 5:41Speaker 1: going to be, Okay, he'll sign a deal, but when
- 5:43Speaker 1: will he become a free agent and when will he
- 5:46Speaker 1: be able to really cash in? And with this deal
- 5:49Speaker 1: nine years, no club options, he'll be a free agent
- 5:52Speaker 1: after the age twenty eight season, entering the age twenty
- 5:56Speaker 1: nine season, that should be a pretty good situation for
- 6:00Speaker 1: him because it's still young enough to get paid in
- 6:03Speaker 1: a big way. So with Griffin, clearly he wanted the
- 6:07Speaker 1: long deal. He also wanted a sufficient guarantee, and he
- 6:11Speaker 1: got a really good deal in that regard as well.
- 6:14Speaker 1: The RB years are pretty close to current market value.
- 6:17Speaker 1: The free agent years maybe a little bit below where
- 6:19Speaker 1: he ultimately might have been, but he did okay.
- 6:23Speaker 3: A great extension for him. Certainly. You like those that
- 6:26Speaker 3: benefit both sides of the equation, all right, Ken, I
- 6:29Speaker 3: don't know that the Rangers, excuse me, the Pirates are
- 6:32Speaker 3: surprising anybody, but there are some teams that continue to surprise.
- 6:37Speaker 3: The first place, Texas Ranger sweeping the Mariners your first
- 6:41Speaker 3: topic of conversation there.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yes, I like the Rangers, and I like what Skip
- 6:45Speaker 1: Schumacher has brought to that team kind of a new energy.
- 6:48Speaker 2: And it's not a knock on.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Bruce Bochie, of course, he won a World Series with
- 6:51Speaker 1: the Rangers. But sometimes change can be good. And Schumacher
- 6:55Speaker 1: definitely is a younger, different kind of manager than Bochie,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and he is injected.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Some different energy into that team. There's no question about that.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Now. The other thing about the Rangers that you have
- 7:07Speaker 1: to like is da ground Evaldi lighter and the rest
- 7:11Speaker 1: of that rotation. I'm missing someone, oh, Mackenzie Gore, who
- 7:14Speaker 1: was brilliant again yesterday. So their rotations in really good shape.
- 7:19Speaker 1: They believe their offense will be better. They face some
- 7:22Speaker 1: really good pitching so far, and yes they're a little
- 7:25Speaker 1: worried about Jack Peterson.
- 7:26Speaker 2: But the Rangers have a new way.
- 7:28Speaker 1: About them, a new look about them, and if indeed
- 7:31Speaker 1: their offense is as good as they think it's going
- 7:33Speaker 1: to be, then they are a playoff contender.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yes. Ken.
- 7:37Speaker 3: When we talked about the NL Central before the beginning
- 7:40Speaker 3: of the season, we talked a lot, of course about
- 7:42Speaker 3: the Chicago Cubs with the addition of Alex Bradman. We talked,
- 7:45Speaker 3: of course about the Milwaukee Brewers, who seemed to be
- 7:47Speaker 3: at the top of the division every single year. We
- 7:50Speaker 3: weren't talking too much about the Reds. They're surprising some
- 7:53Speaker 3: folks a little.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Bit so far, I would say Alana for sure, and
- 7:57Speaker 1: the entire NL Central actually is a bit of a surprise.
- 8:00Speaker 1: All five teams are five hundred or above. Only division
- 8:03Speaker 1: like that right now. And the Reds, even though they're
- 8:07Speaker 1: not really hitting, they're twenty eighth in the league and
- 8:09Speaker 1: runs per game right now. They have, like the Rangers,
- 8:12Speaker 1: a very strong rotation even without Hunter Green right now
- 8:16Speaker 1: and no Dola. So I do like where they are,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and I always like the fact that Francona gets generally
- 8:23Speaker 1: the most out of his teams, so they're a team
- 8:26Speaker 1: that in that division can be a factor. Now it's
- 8:30Speaker 1: a really interesting division. The Cubs probably have the most talent,
- 8:34Speaker 1: the Brewers probably are the best team, The Pirates are coming,
- 8:38Speaker 1: they're better than they've been, and while the Cardinals are rebuilding,
- 8:42Speaker 1: at least they've been competitive so far. And then of
- 8:44Speaker 1: course we're talking about the Reds. So it's going to
- 8:48Speaker 1: be interesting to see if one of the lesser clubs,
- 8:50Speaker 1: the Pirates or the Reds, lesser in recent years, can
- 8:54Speaker 1: ultimately stand up and challenge one of the better clubs,
- 8:57Speaker 1: the Brewers and the Cubs.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Know if a lot of folks even remember the Reds
- 9:02Speaker 3: were in the postseason last year, I mean, this is
- 9:04Speaker 3: not a isn't isn't trying to go for it. How
- 9:08Speaker 3: much of their success do you think, especially this year,
- 9:10Speaker 3: perhaps is the Terry Francona effect.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Hard to know exactly, and really, first things first, it
- 9:18Speaker 1: always comes down to players. You have to have the players,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and their pitching is really intriguing. Their young pitching, Chase Burns, well,
- 9:26Speaker 1: Andre Rabbit's not even so young anymore. But the entire group,
- 9:28Speaker 1: it's pretty impressive.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Now.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Ultimately, Francona, as I said, gets the most out of
- 9:35Speaker 1: his clubs in an usual sense. Not always that way,
- 9:38Speaker 1: of course, any team has disappointing years. But I trust
- 9:41Speaker 1: him to do that. I think we all trust him
- 9:43Speaker 1: to do that. Now the question becomes, are they going
- 9:45Speaker 1: to hit enough? And Matt McClain is back, that's big
- 9:48Speaker 1: for them. He was a catalyst a couple of years
- 9:51Speaker 1: ago they got hurt. Wasn't the same last year him?
- 9:54Speaker 1: Dela Cruz. Now with the addition of Aohaneo Suarez, they
- 9:58Speaker 1: have a little bit of a more offensive look about them,
- 10:02Speaker 1: but they haven't really shown that so far, so that's
- 10:04Speaker 1: going to be the question. And south Stewart, I have
- 10:07Speaker 1: to mention him as well. This guy is one of
- 10:08Speaker 1: the better rookies in the game.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I overlooked him a couple of weeks ago. Some Red
- 10:12Speaker 2: fans jump me.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I apologize that Al Stewart is in the conversation.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I'm glad you got that off of your chest. Reds
- 10:21Speaker 3: fans give Ken Rosenthal a break. Another team can that
- 10:25Speaker 3: might be surprising some certainly surprising me. The Colorado Rockies
- 10:28Speaker 3: at five hundred. That may not seem like a big deal.
- 10:31Speaker 3: But this is a team, of course, that had a
- 10:33Speaker 3: horrific year last year. They're at six and six right now,
- 10:36Speaker 3: and they're not the last team in the NL West.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Ken, imagine that.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And with the Rockies, it's a new era obviously with
- 10:44Speaker 1: Paul de Podesta and Josh Burns, and they're going to
- 10:47Speaker 1: do some things differently in the fat and then in
- 10:50Speaker 1: the past, and what they bring is an outside perspective.
- 10:53Speaker 1: For too long, the Rockies were insular and they just
- 10:57Speaker 1: relied on their own people, and that's fine.
- 10:59Speaker 2: There are some great people.
- 11:00Speaker 1: In that organization, as there are in every organization.
- 11:03Speaker 2: They needed new ideas.
- 11:05Speaker 1: New thoughts, and deep Pedesta and Burns bring that. And
- 11:08Speaker 1: I'll also mention their manager because the players speak highly
- 11:10Speaker 1: of him, Warren Shaeffer, longtime guy on the staff. They
- 11:14Speaker 1: elevated him to replace Bud Black. He looks like he
- 11:17Speaker 1: can be one of the better young managers in the game.
- 11:20Speaker 1: As he goes forward, we'll see and we'll see how
- 11:22Speaker 1: they play. The pitching is always going to be challenged
- 11:26Speaker 1: in horse Fields, but they have some interesting young players tofar.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Certainly is an emerging star. I'm anxious to see how
- 11:33Speaker 1: it goes. Really not so much this season, but in
- 11:36Speaker 1: the years to come, because conquering Corsefield as a team
- 11:42Speaker 1: is considered the biggest challenge any club faces, conquering the
- 11:45Speaker 1: situation that the Rockies are in deep, Podesta and Burns
- 11:48Speaker 1: are up for that challenge. I'm sure Schaeffer is too.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And we'll see if they can have some new answers,
- 11:54Speaker 1: because no one really has had sustainable answers to this point.
- 11:58Speaker 3: And I can appreciate the fact that Dick Montfort has
- 12:01Speaker 3: kind of passed those reins to his son, Walker Montfort,
- 12:03Speaker 3: who has worked his way up in the in the
- 12:06Speaker 3: system there and has perhaps a new perspective on things
- 12:10Speaker 3: in Colorado. All right. The lead is powered by Game Changer,

- 12:21Speaker 3: Now let's get into Grill and Ken Okay Ken. Our
- 12:30Speaker 3: first question is from Nick Hoist one for seven. Why
- 12:34Speaker 3: are so many young players getting these contracts before they
- 12:38Speaker 3: even enter the league? Obviously, Connor Griffin had played a
- 12:41Speaker 3: couple of games before they made this official, but he's
- 12:44Speaker 3: not the only one in terms of rookies getting getting
- 12:47Speaker 3: some some long term money, if you will, Nick.
- 12:51Speaker 1: A lot of fans have this question, and it's an
- 12:53Speaker 1: understandable one because a lot of these players have not
- 12:56Speaker 1: done anything yet. But the thinking is, and I wrote
- 12:59Speaker 1: this a couple of weeks after the cold Emerson extension
- 13:02Speaker 1: and just had this thought, and it's not really a
- 13:05Speaker 1: radical thought. Teams only do this because they feel it's
- 13:08Speaker 1: going to be to their advantage that ultimately they'll be
- 13:12Speaker 1: getting players at below market rates, that the players will
- 13:16Speaker 1: outperform the contracts and give the teams surplus value. That
- 13:20Speaker 1: is the motivation. For the clubs in every one of
- 13:23Speaker 1: these cases, that's.
- 13:24Speaker 2: What they want.
- 13:25Speaker 1: So does it always work out? No it doesn't, but
- 13:28Speaker 1: more often than not it does. From the club's perspective,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and of course from the player's perspective. They take these
- 13:34Speaker 1: deals because, hey, you've got lifetime security before you've even
- 13:38Speaker 1: done anything.
- 13:38Speaker 2: It's a pretty good situation of being I.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Love this because we don't always get to peel the
- 13:43Speaker 3: curtain back when it comes to you. Obviously, you're incredibly professional.
- 13:47Speaker 3: But I love learning more about Ken Rosenthal, the person versus,
- 13:51Speaker 3: in my opinion, Hall of Fame reporter. Who was your
- 13:54Speaker 3: favorite Major League Baseball player growing up? This is from
- 13:58Speaker 3: Video Game Nation twenty six.
- 14:00Speaker 1: All right, Video Game Nation twenty six. I was seven
- 14:03Speaker 1: years old when the Mets won the nineteen sixty nine
- 14:05Speaker 1: World Series, and don't do the math that makes me
- 14:08Speaker 1: sixty three. When the Mets won the nineteen sixty nine
- 14:11Speaker 1: World Series, my favorite player.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Was a guy named Ron Swoboda.
- 14:14Speaker 1: He was my first favorite player and he was the
- 14:17Speaker 1: one I don't know on the Mets that I just
- 14:18Speaker 1: identified as a guy I liked.
- 14:20Speaker 2: I liked the Mets back then.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Mets fans, interestingly enough, think I hate their team now, No,
- 14:25Speaker 1: it's just my job.
- 14:27Speaker 3: So next question, Okay, this one from Jeremy from Boston.
- 14:32Speaker 3: I think he's actually actually from Woosta. On the heels
- 14:35Speaker 3: of the City Connect announcement today, Which team has the
- 14:39Speaker 3: best City Connect uniform in baseball? Can I don't even
- 14:43Speaker 3: know if you saw them, had the opportunity to take
- 14:45Speaker 3: a look at him, But this is basically City Connect
- 14:48Speaker 3: a two point zero three point zero. Any thoughts there
- 14:51Speaker 3: is one from Baltimore. It's be more.
- 14:54Speaker 2: This is please make more money. That's what the City
- 14:56Speaker 2: Connect uniforms are. And I understand that. And MLB does
- 15:00Speaker 2: some cool and creative things.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Not just with the uniforms but with the videos that
- 15:06Speaker 1: accompany the announcements.
- 15:07Speaker 2: They're really good.
- 15:08Speaker 1: But I haven't taken a look in depth at the
- 15:11Speaker 1: uniforms yet. I've had other things regarding the actual game
- 15:14Speaker 1: on the field that I've had more concerns about.
- 15:17Speaker 3: All Right, I liked the Wisco ones for the Milwaukee
- 15:20Speaker 3: Brewers Wisko, and I also like the Pirates ones. I
- 15:23Speaker 3: thought the new Pirates every Pirate uniform that has ever
- 15:26Speaker 3: come out, I've absolutely loved. There's just something about the
- 15:29Speaker 3: way the pirates go about it that I absolutely love,
- 15:31Speaker 3: all right, Clint from La, how much did the Blue
- 15:34Speaker 3: Jays need that? When over the Dodgers can perhaps just
- 15:39Speaker 3: more from a mental perspective than anything.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I would say for an April game, it had more
- 15:45Speaker 1: meaning than most. But with the Blue Jays, the key
- 15:48Speaker 1: thing is, well, two key things. One they've got to hit.
- 15:52Speaker 1: They have not hit to their capabilities yet. And two
- 15:55Speaker 1: they've got to play cleaner baseball. They're in a situation
- 15:58Speaker 1: now when they have a rotation and entire rotation on
- 16:02Speaker 1: the injured list, five starters on the injured list, and
- 16:05Speaker 1: some are in better conditions than others, and some will
- 16:07Speaker 1: be back, and of course Boden Francis won't and Cody
- 16:10Speaker 1: Ponce won't.
- 16:11Speaker 2: But to be the team that they want to be,
- 16:14Speaker 2: the team that.
- 16:14Speaker 1: They were last year, they have to play clean and
- 16:17Speaker 1: they have not done that for the most part, and
- 16:19Speaker 1: they've got to be better offensively. O Komodo essentially replaces Bashett.
- 16:23Speaker 1: It's largely the same cast. Of course, Barger's heard a
- 16:26Speaker 1: little bit, so it's early. I don't know that we
- 16:30Speaker 1: can judge the Jays yet, and I don't know that
- 16:32Speaker 1: even it's fair to look at them like we would
- 16:34Speaker 1: in a normal season, because they're coming off an incredibly
- 16:37Speaker 1: emotionally draining World Series. I know it's a new year,
- 16:41Speaker 1: but there's an adjustment. I'm sure that takes place with
- 16:44Speaker 1: these guys. And while they're all professional, of course, extremely professional,
- 16:48Speaker 1: and they go about their business the right way, the
- 16:52Speaker 1: hangover effect, to me, it seems like it might be real.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Mark Spiroh and Ross Atkins getting extensions. You have to
- 16:59Speaker 3: love the fat to Ken that this team spent money
- 17:01Speaker 3: in the off season putting it back into their product.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I appreciate Toronto for doing that. There have been a
- 17:07Speaker 3: lot of injuries Ken, in terms of decimating starting rotations
- 17:11Speaker 3: around baseball. Let's talk a bit about the Houston Astros
- 17:15Speaker 3: and Christian hobby Air exiting early with the shoulder issue.
- 17:18Speaker 2: What do you know, this is troubling.
- 17:20Speaker 1: And Christian Javier, of course, a hero of the twenty
- 17:23Speaker 1: twenty two World Series, goes Tommy John a little bit
- 17:27Speaker 1: after that and then he misses his time. Now he's
- 17:30Speaker 1: back and he still has not been the same picture.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And now he is on the injured list with shoulder problems.
- 17:35Speaker 1: And that is alarming because the Astros just loves Hunter
- 17:38Speaker 1: Brown for an indeterminate amount of time. The Astros did
- 17:42Speaker 1: a good job in the off season building up the
- 17:45Speaker 1: depth of their rotation. They acquired Mike Burrows, they signed
- 17:48Speaker 1: Am I, they brought in Ryan Weiss.
- 17:50Speaker 2: They have enough bodies.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But obviously as these injuries hit, it becomes problematic.
- 17:57Speaker 2: And that's where they are now, all right.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Not the only one in terms of that Hunter Brown,
- 18:02Speaker 3: of course, Zach Eflin and Kate Horton. How much does
- 18:05Speaker 3: Zach Efflin issue prove to be problematic for Baltimore Ken.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Another team that has tried to build up its depth,
- 18:14Speaker 1: and they have better depth than in the past, but
- 18:17Speaker 1: they wanted Efflin to be part of their equation.
- 18:20Speaker 2: And it's crushing for Eflyn too. This guy's battled injuries.
- 18:22Speaker 1: He's had all kinds of problems over the years, and
- 18:25Speaker 1: just when it seems he was back to being himself
- 18:27Speaker 1: and when he is healthy he is a really good picture.
- 18:30Speaker 2: That is obviously something that's disappointing for him.
- 18:33Speaker 1: But for the Orioles, rotation has been their number one
- 18:37Speaker 1: question and we entered the season again wondering if they
- 18:41Speaker 1: had enough at the top. It's bratish, it's Rogers. It's
- 18:45Speaker 1: bos they are okay.
- 18:47Speaker 2: But are they good enough? Now?
- 18:49Speaker 1: Dtan Kramer will step in for Efflyn, and they have
- 18:51Speaker 1: some younger pictures as well that they can turn to.
- 18:54Speaker 1: It just is curious or not curious. It's just a
- 18:58Speaker 1: question that persists with them. And I forgot to mention
- 19:00Speaker 1: Chris Bassett.
- 19:01Speaker 2: He's in the equation too. He hasn't started too well.
- 19:04Speaker 2: I don't know. They're too worried about that. So the
- 19:07Speaker 2: question that started the season is the question.
- 19:09Speaker 1: That remains, and again gets exacerbated by the Efflin injury.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Now doubt about that, Cad Horton out for the season.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Ken for the Chicago Cubs, how do they deal with that?
- 19:20Speaker 1: Well, they've gotten two good starts in the last two
- 19:22Speaker 1: days with boyd out two out of Assad and Colin Ray,
- 19:26Speaker 1: so they too have tried to build depth.
- 19:29Speaker 2: It's a common theme here right Why.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Because pictures get hurt. It's the nature of the game today.
- 19:34Speaker 1: It's the reality of the game today.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Now, can the Cubs.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Sustain it all year with Assad and Ray?
- 19:40Speaker 2: I don't know that they can.
- 19:42Speaker 1: I don't know that they'll need to. Boy should be
- 19:43Speaker 1: back in due time, of course. Horton is out for
- 19:46Speaker 1: the season and that is a blow. But they've got
- 19:49Speaker 1: still Ibrad Cabrera and Jamison Tyon and him and Naga
- 19:53Speaker 1: and they should be okay. But I would not be
- 19:56Speaker 1: surprised at the deadline.
- 19:57Speaker 2: And if they're looking for starting pitching.
- 20:00Speaker 3: We're going to be back with Dude and Dork of
- 20:02Speaker 3: the Week right after this.

- 21:20Speaker 1: Dude, Dude, dude, all.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Right, I love this part of our show because we
- 21:30Speaker 3: get to compliment somebody that did something great this week.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Whether it's an individual or an organization. Can go ahead.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Who is your Dude of the week?
- 21:38Speaker 2: Joe Adele? In my goodness, I know it was Saturday night.
- 21:42Speaker 1: It's ancient history already, but that was one of the
- 21:43Speaker 1: greatest defensive performances any of us has ever seen. The
- 21:46Speaker 1: three home run robberies, especially the last one when he
- 21:50Speaker 1: fell into the right field seats. It was a great
- 21:53Speaker 1: moment for a guy who has come a long way
- 21:55Speaker 1: and a guy who kind of brings a lot of
- 21:58Speaker 1: light to the Angels. So Joey Dell due to the week,
- 22:01Speaker 1: and man, that was just mind bottling what happened. First
- 22:05Speaker 1: of all, to even get three chances to rob home runs,
- 22:08Speaker 1: that's extremely rare, and then to actually do it, and
- 22:10Speaker 1: to do it in the dramatic way that he did
- 22:12Speaker 1: in a close game.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Joey Dell due to the.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Week, no doubt about that. I mean it could be
- 22:17Speaker 3: due to the year. For that defensive performance, the best
- 22:19Speaker 3: defensive game I certainly have ever seen. Even more so
- 22:22Speaker 3: Ken He did it in front of Mike Trout and
- 22:24Speaker 3: Tory Hunter, two obviously very good defensive outfielders as well.
- 22:28Speaker 3: And let's give some credit to Kaylee Kay who took
- 22:31Speaker 3: that amazing photo. If she doesn't have a deal with
- 22:33Speaker 3: Apple by now, I'm assuming she used her iPhone to
- 22:37Speaker 3: do that, she certainly deserves one. And that glove is
- 22:40Speaker 3: headed to Cooperstown Joe Adele donating the glove to the
- 22:45Speaker 3: Baseball Hall of Fame. My dude of the week is
- 22:47Speaker 3: Walt Weiss, the Atlanta Braves manager, who I think could
- 22:52Speaker 3: put on the pads Ken for the Atlanta Falcons. He
- 22:56Speaker 3: took down Hojjes Soled, who used to be his own player.
- 23:00Speaker 3: And again, let's not forget that Walt Weiss Uh is
- 23:05Speaker 3: a he's in you know, he's he's trained for taekwondo
- 23:09Speaker 3: or m m A and and those types of things.
- 23:12Speaker 3: He is a man that obviously is a man of
- 23:15Speaker 3: tremendous strength, and he was able to take him down.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And Hoode Solid has a tremendous amount of respect for
- 23:20Speaker 3: Walt Weiss and he actually said Solid did that. He
- 23:23Speaker 3: was probably trying just to protect him and Walt Weiss.
- 23:26Speaker 3: I texted him and I said, boss, move skip and
- 23:28Speaker 3: he said, old guys can still have fun. Uh, you
- 23:33Speaker 3: are my dude of the week for taking down that
- 23:35Speaker 3: large human in hode Soled. All right, time now for
- 23:39Speaker 3: our dork of the week. Unfortunately, Ken, there were a
- 23:49Speaker 3: lot of people to choose from in terms of our
- 23:52Speaker 3: dorks of the week. Go ahead, who is yours?
- 23:55Speaker 2: All right? This is not an extreme dork of the week.
- 23:57Speaker 2: This is a very mild one from a guy who
- 23:59Speaker 2: I trust.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Will I'm gonna be the DRK of the week again
- 24:01Speaker 1: because in my view he is one of the better
- 24:03Speaker 1: managers in the game right now for Clayton McCullough on
- 24:06Speaker 1: Tuesday night, and he instantly regretted this, or not instantly
- 24:09Speaker 1: as the game evolved.
- 24:10Speaker 2: He credited it took out.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Sandy l Contra with two with one out in the
- 24:15Speaker 1: ninth inning, a lead, and the chance for al Contra
- 24:19Speaker 1: to pitch back to back complete games and become the
- 24:22Speaker 1: first pitcher to do that in eleven years.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Now, there's no crime in going to the bullpen, and
- 24:27Speaker 2: if it had worked out, maybe we wouldn't have even
- 24:29Speaker 2: been talking about it. But of course it didn't work out.
- 24:32Speaker 1: The Marlins lost to the Reds in ten innings, and
- 24:35Speaker 1: our consult was removed with first and second, two runners
- 24:38Speaker 1: on and one out. As I said, he was still
- 24:41Speaker 1: going strong, and our contreda said afterward that, you know what,
- 24:45Speaker 1: I wish I had been consulted because the move was
- 24:47Speaker 1: made before he had any say in the matter.
- 24:49Speaker 2: And Clayton McCullough owned it afterward.
- 24:52Speaker 1: He said, there are decisions that you make that don't
- 24:55Speaker 1: necessarily work out the way you want.
- 24:57Speaker 2: That was one of them.
- 24:58Speaker 1: So it's a mild dork of the week, and guys
- 25:00Speaker 1: say stupid stuff that's not so mild.
- 25:02Speaker 2: That's real dork of the week.
- 25:04Speaker 1: This one is more of a second guess and one
- 25:06Speaker 1: that he openly acknowledged afterward himself. It was just a
- 25:09Speaker 1: fascinating situation and of course get backfired.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Okay, my dork of the week is on the other
- 25:16Speaker 3: side of the Walt Weiss equation. But for me, it's
- 25:18Speaker 3: Rinaldo Lopez kN trying to punch solid with a baseball
- 25:23Speaker 3: in his hand. I'm not certain what you should do
- 25:25Speaker 3: in that situation. Maybe drop the baseball before you try
- 25:28Speaker 3: to punch somebody. You'd probably be a little bit more effective.
- 25:30Speaker 3: But that whole thing was just a little silly. It
- 25:33Speaker 3: was kind of you know, the brew ha that happened
- 25:36Speaker 3: in Anaheim. Both of those guys get suspended. I want
- 25:39Speaker 3: to say that Ronaldo Lopez, I think was reduced to
- 25:43Speaker 3: five games, Is that right? So he actually won't miss
- 25:46Speaker 3: the start the next time, So I mean Soled won't
- 25:49Speaker 3: miss the start the next time. So anyway, that is
- 25:52Speaker 3: my dork.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Of the week.
- 25:53Speaker 3: All right, Ken, what about the possibility of a second
- 25:57Speaker 3: straight rain delay if you will in your upcoming game.
- 26:01Speaker 3: We're going to talk about that after the break. If
- 26:03Speaker 3: you're watching on TV, We're going to see you next week.
- 26:06Speaker 3: We'll have a couple more minutes for the YouTube crowd
- 26:09Speaker 3: right after this. All right, if you're still with us,
- 26:11Speaker 3: we appreciate you guys watching on YouTube. Ken, you are
- 26:15Speaker 3: supposed to be doing what Boston at Saint Louis this weekend?
- 26:19Speaker 3: Is that going to happen. I'm not trying to make
- 26:21Speaker 3: you a weather man, but there is some weather in
- 26:23Speaker 3: the outlook at sure, it looks.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Like there is a lot.
- 26:27Speaker 1: And the only reason we even bring this up is
- 26:30Speaker 1: because last week I was supposed to do the Cubs
- 26:33Speaker 1: at the Guardians and that one was rained out.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Now, this is my twenty first year with Fox. Twenty
- 26:40Speaker 2: first year.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I don't believe we've ever had two consecutive rainouts during
- 26:46Speaker 1: the regular season. So we're looking at unprecedented, uncharted territory perhaps,
- 26:51Speaker 1: But I am confident, even though I have had weather
- 26:54Speaker 1: issues in Saint Louis before.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I am confident this game is going to be played.
- 26:57Speaker 1: We're going to see range of Suarez make us thirdd
- 26:59Speaker 1: start for the Boston Red Sox, and if it doesn't happen, well,
- 27:04Speaker 1: your screens will be without Fox Baseball Game at least
- 27:07Speaker 1: the one from Saint Louis.
- 27:08Speaker 2: We'll have another game always a backup.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Actually, we have an alternate game always and that goes
- 27:13Speaker 1: to part of the country and the game I'm doing
- 27:15Speaker 1: goes to another part.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Okay, well, rain, rain or weather, weather go away. We
- 27:20Speaker 3: definitely want to be able to get that game in.
- 27:23Speaker 3: We appreciate you guys watching. Of course, that's it for us.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Foul Territory is next. Rockies first Baseman G. J. Rumfield
- 27:30Speaker 3: and the Athletics Owen Point, Dexter and Lev Weaver joined,
- 27:34Speaker 3: Eric Kratz, Todd Frazer, and Scott Braun, and then Dodgers'
- 27:37Speaker 3: Territory follows with myself, Clint Pasius and Katie Woo Brad
- 27:41Speaker 3: Paisley joining us on the show too. Whoa my guy
- 27:45Speaker 3: Brad on the show Ken. Of course, we'll be back
- 27:48Speaker 3: on Monday with Fair Territory. Have a great weekend everybody,
- 27:51Speaker 3: Thanks for being here by
- 27:52Speaker 4: Bye keep mos
