- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:19Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is Mina Kimes Friday. Mina Kimes for
- 0:24Speaker 1: all things ESPN. What's going on?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Hello.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Wow.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Have I co-opted Foxworth Friday today?
- 0:31Speaker 1: Whoever gets on Friday still gets the presentation, even though
- 0:34Speaker 1: it lacks the alliteration that makes it all, you know,
- 0:37Speaker 1: do the thing. You know what I'm saying?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Can your listeners come up with a Mina name? for me,
- 0:42Speaker 2: I would appreciate that.
- 0:44Speaker 1: All right. I am going to offer this opportunity from
- 0:47Speaker 1: them and I am going to cross my fingers that
- 0:50Speaker 1: they don't embarrass me in front of my friends. Like
- 0:53Speaker 1: this is a, this is, this is a ask the kids.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Don't try to make no fool of me. Um, speaking
- 1:00Speaker 1: of being made a fool of, we got a lot
- 1:02Speaker 1: going on here in week two. Um, week two is
- 1:05Speaker 1: always interesting to me though because week two of the
- 1:07Speaker 1: nfl season is not quite like week two of the
- 1:09Speaker 1: college football season which is always terrible because they front
- 1:12Speaker 1: load so many good games and then there's nothing left
- 1:15Speaker 1: like we got a couple sneaking out here and they
- 1:17Speaker 1: gave us super bowl rematch the eagles and the chiefs
- 1:22Speaker 1: and i guess they both had short week me long
- 1:25Speaker 1: weeks because of um playing in the middle of the
- 1:27Speaker 1: week except the chiefs had to come back from Brazil
- 1:31Speaker 1: after getting their asses kicked. Like, is it rut row
- 1:34Speaker 1: zone for the Chiefs if they lose this game? No.
- 1:37Speaker 2: No. I'm not throwing dirt on the Chiefs in week two.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I'm fine.
- 1:42Speaker 2: But it's not going to feel great. The funny thing is,
- 1:44Speaker 2: I think, despite being in the Super Bowl, both of
- 1:47Speaker 2: these teams sort of had underwhelming week ones. I think
- 1:51Speaker 2: with the Eagles, obviously, you can explain a lot of
- 1:53Speaker 2: that away with the Jalen Carter ejection.
- 1:57Speaker 1: However.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Also, it's like, well, that's it? You take out Jalen Carter?
- 2:02Speaker 2: Is his defense no longer– I think that is kind
- 2:04Speaker 2: of a scary feeling for Eagles fans, also seeing what
- 2:08Speaker 2: they knew was a vulnerability all offseason, the second cornerback
- 2:11Speaker 2: position be so glaringly exposed as one. But I think what–
- 2:18Speaker 2: and this is why week one is so funny. Context
- 2:20Speaker 2: is kind of hard to– like you're watching these and
- 2:24Speaker 2: you're thinking, wow, Daniel Jones looks amazing, but is the Dolphins'
- 2:26Speaker 2: defense just cheeks, right?
- 2:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I think the Cowboys offense is actually a lot better
- 2:30Speaker 2: than people think. And I think that played into it
- 2:32Speaker 2: as well. So I think the Eagles are going to
- 2:33Speaker 2: bounce back in a big way. I'm a lot more
- 2:35Speaker 2: skeptical about the Chiefs in this one.
- 2:36Speaker 1: All right. I want to stick with the Eagles there
- 2:38Speaker 1: because I think I think the difference in part of
- 2:41Speaker 1: why the Eagles performance, aside from the fact that they won,
- 2:45Speaker 1: wouldn't be quite as disappointing is. I think we all,
- 2:48Speaker 1: at least I did, felt confident saying, even if the
- 2:50Speaker 1: Eagles are better than everybody else, they were going to
- 2:52Speaker 1: be worse this year than they were last year. Like
- 2:54Speaker 1: I heard your man Dano talking about this. They lost
- 2:57Speaker 1: two guys in free agency who got $ 100 million to
- 3:00Speaker 1: play defensive line, right? Like it's just impossible to keep
- 3:03Speaker 1: a team like that together. But then we felt like
- 3:05Speaker 1: the Chiefs got better, right? Now part of it is
- 3:08Speaker 1: Rasheed Rice is going to come back, but he's not back-to-back.
- 3:11Speaker 1: He's just back on the team. Hollywood Brown, a couple
- 3:14Speaker 1: other moves. We thought that they had improved. The Chiefs,
- 3:20Speaker 1: you just pointed to something, and I'm always here to
- 3:24Speaker 1: speak for the underrepresented and the downtrodden, but yes, the
- 3:28Speaker 1: Chiefs have, not the Chiefs, the Eagles. The Eagles have
- 3:30Speaker 1: a problem at number two corner, but I feel like
- 3:33Speaker 1: the solution is right there in the slot, just maybe
- 3:37Speaker 1: a little bit. They don't want to fix the problem
- 3:41Speaker 1: when the man is right there, ready to do it.
- 3:44Speaker 2: They might have to do that. And isn't that always
- 3:48Speaker 2: how history gets made out of necessity is that's when
- 3:52Speaker 2: true racial pioneers step up to.
- 3:55Speaker 1: The plate is when there's no other choice.
- 3:57Speaker 2: There's no other choice. Yeah. Jackie Robinson to Jean could
- 4:02Speaker 2: absolutely play outside.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I don't know though.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Cause he's so good in the slot. I think it's
- 4:07Speaker 2: a matchup thing. You know, if you're playing it, the
- 4:12Speaker 2: thing about to the NFL now is like, slot corner
- 4:15Speaker 2: is no longer like, oh, let's just stick our littlest
- 4:17Speaker 2: worst guy there. It's actually really, really important. Like a
- 4:20Speaker 2: lot of teams play their best receiver in the slot.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So I feel like, you know, you got to be
- 4:26Speaker 2: kind of wary of moving him, especially because he's such
- 4:28Speaker 2: a good nickel. He's so good at tackling. He's so physical.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I think the solution to the Eagles cornerback two problem
- 4:36Speaker 2: is playing the Kansas City Chiefs. I mean, like, right. Like, uh,
- 4:42Speaker 2: because the problem with the Cowboys, and this is what
- 4:44Speaker 2: I was saying about how they're, I think they're better
- 4:45Speaker 2: than everyone thinks they got two ones.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Here we think about George Pickens. He is a one, uh,
- 4:51Speaker 2: very few teams have that kind of wide receiver death
- 4:53Speaker 2: and boy, do the Kansas city chiefs not have that
- 4:56Speaker 2: kind of wide receiver death.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Do you ever think that Riley Moss is just a
- 5:00Speaker 1: little bit sick of hearing about Cooper to Jean? Like
- 5:02Speaker 1: he ain't right there actually playing outside corner for maybe
- 5:05Speaker 1: the best defense. in the NFL. And I think people
- 5:08Speaker 1: don't even know that he the OG Cooper D.
- 5:11Speaker 2: He was also good last year before he got hurt.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And unfortunately he came back, I think from the injury,
- 5:16Speaker 2: not him, Riley Moss himself. And then he got killed by,
- 5:19Speaker 2: I think the Bengals was that one in national game.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Cause yeah, you're right.
- 5:23Speaker 1: He is.
- 5:23Speaker 2: He was the OG Cooper. He also has the misfortune
- 5:28Speaker 2: of playing opposite Patrick Sertan, which means he just gets
- 5:31Speaker 2: thrown at constantly.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:34Speaker 2: It's unfortunate.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Well, first of all, that was going to be the
- 5:37Speaker 1: plan coming out of the huddle already, right? Like he
- 5:40Speaker 1: could be opposite Beaumont Jones and they're going to be like, nah,
- 5:43Speaker 1: Riley Moss. Let's see if that's the guy that we're
- 5:44Speaker 1: going to pick on until proven otherwise.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, and Quinion Mitchell, to be fair, he's
- 5:49Speaker 2: not certain yet, but he's really good. And I think
- 5:52Speaker 2: he has that effect. Can I say something about the Chiefs? Yeah. I,
- 5:58Speaker 2: after all this wide receiver talk, I know we're correctly
- 6:01Speaker 2: criticizing their offense.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I'm more worried about the defense, man, after week one.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I think that was kind of like you talked about
- 6:08Speaker 2: how everyone thought the Chiefs would be better. I think
- 6:11Speaker 2: there's this assumption that because Steve Spagnuolo is so good
- 6:14Speaker 2: and Chris Jones is so good, they can just keep
- 6:17Speaker 2: cycling in these young DBs that no one's ever heard of,
- 6:19Speaker 2: like all named Justin and Josh, and it's going to
- 6:22Speaker 2: be fine. And it was not fine at all against
- 6:27Speaker 2: the Chargers. And I think kind of maybe that got
- 6:30Speaker 2: slept on a little bit this offseason that they– have
- 6:33Speaker 2: really gotten younger and younger on defense.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I would also point out that Chris Jones is 31
- 6:38Speaker 1: years old. And, you know, you can only expect but
- 6:43Speaker 1: so much. Like, I get worried, and I know that
- 6:45Speaker 1: that back and forth that he had with, I've already
- 6:47Speaker 1: forgotten the dude's name, in the game in Brazil.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Tight and tight.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but when teams start, like, it was like I
- 6:53Speaker 1: felt about my league neighbors. Hey, man, when it's like
- 6:55Speaker 1: this in week one, y'all already snippy in week one.
- 6:59Speaker 1: We just got here. We just showed up.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Sorry, it wasn't Tyre. Tyre was the Chargers defensive
- 7:05Speaker 2: tackle who hit Travis Kelsey.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:07Speaker 1: That was crazy.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. It's... I don't know, though. We've just done
- 7:13Speaker 2: this movie with the Chiefs so many times. I'm not
- 7:14Speaker 2: going to throw a... I think it's hard, too, after
- 7:17Speaker 2: watching the Ravens and the Bills, who... My feeling coming
- 7:20Speaker 2: into the season were those were very too clearly the
- 7:22Speaker 2: two best teams in the AFC. I kept the Chiefs
- 7:24Speaker 2: in that tier out of respect, but... Watching all three
- 7:29Speaker 2: of those teams this weekend, especially watching Sunday Night Football,
- 7:32Speaker 2: it just felt like those teams are cut above Kansas
- 7:36Speaker 2: City right now. And so it is just, I don't know.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Can you imagine the Chiefs in that game that we
- 7:45Speaker 2: saw between Lamar and Josh? It just feels different.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I feel that way, though. I mean, you just got
- 7:52Speaker 1: to wait for the Ravens to get a little yippy, right?
- 7:56Speaker 1: Like they have, I feel like, demonstrated themselves to be
- 7:58Speaker 1: the yip masters. You don't want to be the ones
- 8:01Speaker 1: we know as the yip masters. And look, Josh Allen
- 8:04Speaker 1: has spent a lot of his career being a yip master,
- 8:07Speaker 1: but he's not a yip master all the time, right?
- 8:09Speaker 1: Like he might have a yippy moment, but he just
- 8:12Speaker 1: looked like Superman in this game.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that we can, these yips are pretty
- 8:19Speaker 2: much gone with him. I hate the Ravens thing so much.
- 8:22Speaker 2: I hate talking about the Baltimore Ravens because I am
- 8:27Speaker 2: a person who wants to believe that football is logical
- 8:31Speaker 2: and you can analyze teams and figure out their weaknesses
- 8:35Speaker 2: and game plans and go in and look through numbers
- 8:38Speaker 2: and understand what's going wrong. And then you give me
- 8:40Speaker 2: the Baltimore Ravens and I'm just, I'm just like, I
- 8:42Speaker 2: don't know what to do with this. Like, like as
- 8:44Speaker 2: an analyst, you know what I mean? Like, what do you,
- 8:46Speaker 2: what do you do with this? A team that loses
- 8:49Speaker 2: in weird, stupid ways in big moments, different ways. I don't,
- 8:54Speaker 2: I don't, I do not know what to do with
- 8:57Speaker 2: this team. I just don't.
- 8:58Speaker 1: A thing that I always lean on and it's very important.
- 9:01Speaker 1: You can never forget is we got all this other
- 9:03Speaker 1: stuff and then we got people stuff.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:06Speaker 1: And people stuff comes up. We talked about this with
- 9:07Speaker 1: Dominique last week and Dominique, does not like to say
- 9:12Speaker 1: that people can't handle moments or pressure or whatever it was.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Like he just doesn't like to do it. But I
- 9:17Speaker 1: think that that is an incontrovertible fact. We see it
- 9:20Speaker 1: all over the place. We are all built to do
- 9:22Speaker 1: different things in different ways. Us doing television, for example,
- 9:28Speaker 1: there's some things I always feel about doing television. You
- 9:30Speaker 1: can or you can't. I can't necessarily make you better
- 9:33Speaker 1: at it, but there's some people a red light comes
- 9:35Speaker 1: on and they're going to freeze. It doesn't matter how
- 9:37Speaker 1: smart they are. It doesn't matter how much they know
- 9:39Speaker 1: or whatever. That light comes on and they ain't got
- 9:42Speaker 1: it right. This happens on other spaces. This happens in
- 9:46Speaker 1: sports where you get into your head and you start
- 9:49Speaker 1: thinking so much about what it is. that you have
- 9:51Speaker 1: to do. And it is something that can be overcome.
- 9:56Speaker 1: And by the way, to be seen as a champion,
- 9:58Speaker 1: you don't have to overcome it all the time. You
- 10:00Speaker 1: just need to pop up and do it once or twice.
- 10:02Speaker 1: But the Ravens, I think it's generally speaking a top-down situation.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And that is why I think it's just about time
- 10:09Speaker 1: up for John Harbaugh because Lamar ain't the only person
- 10:12Speaker 1: this happens to. In fact, in the game in Buffalo
- 10:14Speaker 1: last year, It happened to Lamar early. He pulled it together.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And it was Mark Andrews that then wound up wetting
- 10:19Speaker 1: his pants in front of everybody. If it's always somebody,
- 10:21Speaker 1: we got to start looking at who's in charge.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, and I also think Harbaugh, in that game,
- 10:27Speaker 2: you can correctly criticize him for being conservative at the
- 10:30Speaker 2: end and turtling up. Scared behavior.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:34Speaker 2: And I think I don't– the problem is I don't–
- 10:39Speaker 2: not the problem, because I do agree with you at
- 10:40Speaker 2: a certain point if you're a team that keeps– doing
- 10:42Speaker 2: this and running into walls, there's really no one else
- 10:44Speaker 2: to blame.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Right.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I will say though, like, you know, that has not
- 10:48Speaker 2: been the problem in other moments where they've gone conservative.
- 10:50Speaker 2: So I just don't, it's so, it's so frustrating for me. Like,
- 10:55Speaker 2: I feel like the good doctor trying to solve a
- 10:57Speaker 2: medical mystery. I don't know why I went to the
- 10:59Speaker 2: autistic doctor on television there, but TV, like I, I
- 11:03Speaker 2: just see a lot of commercials for that show. Yeah.
- 11:07Speaker 2: I just, cause we get asked right on these TV shows,
- 11:10Speaker 2: like what, what's wrong with them. And it's my least
- 11:14Speaker 2: favorite kind of football analysis, which is people just talking
- 11:16Speaker 2: about vibes. And, but at this certain point, there's really
- 11:20Speaker 2: nothing else you can do with the Baltimore Ravens. They're
- 11:25Speaker 2: so good. Like for 80% of that team, they looked
- 11:28Speaker 2: like very game. Pardon me. They looked so clearly like
- 11:32Speaker 2: the best team in the NFL. And then it just all,
- 11:35Speaker 2: it all fell apart. And it makes me, and it's
- 11:39Speaker 2: going to be annoying too, because now, until the end
- 11:41Speaker 2: of the season, even if, let's say, they rebound and
- 11:44Speaker 2: they start dominating teams, everybody's just going to say, cool,
- 11:47Speaker 2: do it in January. And they're not wrong, but I
- 11:48Speaker 2: hate that. I hate that argument. I hate it so much.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I do think, though, you don't like everybody's side of
- 11:54Speaker 1: life's two gods. I do think, though, that if nothing else,
- 12:01Speaker 1: looking at the box score of the game against Buffalo,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and from watching it, but the box score kind of
- 12:06Speaker 1: tells the story. And look, they were so effective on
- 12:08Speaker 1: the ground that they didn't throw the ball that much. However,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I think number two receiver is more of a discussion
- 12:14Speaker 1: for them than we kind of give it credit for
- 12:16Speaker 1: being like, it's what's left of DeAndre Hopkins is what
- 12:19Speaker 1: you're kind of leaning on in this. You're also leaning
- 12:21Speaker 1: on kind of whatever's left of Mark Andrews, right? Like
- 12:23Speaker 1: these are, I don't feel like these are things that
- 12:25Speaker 1: are promised to you for the entirety of a season
- 12:27Speaker 1: at this point. That is where I would work.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, how about the defense though? I mean, that was,
- 12:34Speaker 2: because the offense really until the last two drives wasn't
- 12:36Speaker 2: the issue. The lack of pass rush jumped out to
- 12:38Speaker 2: me and they've been so good at, creating like ginning
- 12:42Speaker 2: up a pass rush through scheme. They don't have like
- 12:46Speaker 2: a dominant rusher on that defensive line, but I felt,
- 12:49Speaker 2: I think this is a great example of like, okay,
- 12:51Speaker 2: but let's week one, like, yes, it didn't look like
- 12:55Speaker 2: the pass rush was getting it done, but also Josh
- 12:58Speaker 2: Allen might be the hardest quarterback to sack outside of
- 13:00Speaker 2: your own quarterback and all the football and the off
- 13:03Speaker 2: the bills offensive line is awesome. So I don't want
- 13:05Speaker 2: to overreact to the defense and the lack of pass
- 13:09Speaker 2: rush in this because I, I think a lot of
- 13:11Speaker 2: that was just Buffalo.
- 13:13Speaker 1: It's going to be interesting if Buffalo turns out to
- 13:15Speaker 1: be that good, right?
- 13:17Speaker 2: Dude, the defense is not good, though.
- 13:19Speaker 1: I know.
- 13:19Speaker 2: They were good for one drive where it mattered, but
- 13:23Speaker 2: the whole game they were getting gashed.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I know.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I'm actually really interested in this week's game against the
- 13:29Speaker 2: Jets for that reason, because the Jets looked like a
- 13:34Speaker 2: very good rushing team week one, and the Bills team
- 13:37Speaker 2: just got ran through. So let's see.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Like, is this going to be an issue all year?
- 13:42Speaker 2: We're going to find out.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Yeah, no, this is AFC is going to be fun, man.
- 13:46Speaker 1: AFC is going to be fun to check. I want
- 13:48Speaker 1: to I want to get back to the Chiefs on
- 13:50Speaker 1: this question because I don't have the great answer for it. Right.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And you go back through the history of the NFL.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And I know a few people have written this piece
- 13:57Speaker 1: over the years. Like, I feel like either Grantland or
- 14:01Speaker 1: the ring or one of those incarnations of Simmons World
- 14:03Speaker 1: has done this. But when you go and see who's
- 14:06Speaker 1: held the belt for being the best quarterback in the league,
- 14:10Speaker 1: it is not quite the straight line that you think
- 14:12Speaker 1: it is, right? Like when Joe Montana retired, people of
- 14:16Speaker 1: my age and a little older had a fair point
- 14:18Speaker 1: that he was the greatest quarterback of all time. But
- 14:21Speaker 1: it didn't really get to a place where people thought
- 14:23Speaker 1: he was the best quarterback in the NFL really until 1989, 1990.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Dan Marino was the best quarterback in the NFL from
- 14:31Speaker 1: 1984 to 1986 without question. I'm not sure he was
- 14:34Speaker 1: ever the best quarterback in the league after that, but
- 14:35Speaker 1: you're not going to tell me that Dan Marino got worse.
- 14:38Speaker 1: You know what I mean? That doesn't add up. And
- 14:41Speaker 1: I think that we're at that place now with Mahomes,
- 14:42Speaker 1: the greatest quarterback that I have ever seen, Yet it's
- 14:45Speaker 1: hard to say that he's better than Josh Allen or
- 14:47Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson right now. But I don't know how much
- 14:49Speaker 1: of that is his fault because he was still out
- 14:50Speaker 1: here doing that Matrix shit in Brazil, completing passes that
- 14:54Speaker 1: seemed humanly impossible.
- 14:56Speaker 2: The way I would put it, if you shuffle all
- 14:58Speaker 2: the quarterbacks and put them on each other's teams, if
- 15:02Speaker 2: you took Patrick Mahomes and put him on either the
- 15:05Speaker 2: Bills with their dominant run game or the Ravens also
- 15:07Speaker 2: with dominant run game and those tight ends, I am
- 15:12Speaker 2: of the belief, and I love Josh Allen, Lamar, that
- 15:15Speaker 2: the offenses would look just as good, that Mahomes would
- 15:18Speaker 2: look like Patrick Mahomes again. And you can say that's
- 15:21Speaker 2: making excuses for him. I just think Kansas City, like
- 15:24Speaker 2: the infrastructure, is really not great right now, right? You
- 15:27Speaker 2: got a young offensive line who flux. You can't run
- 15:30Speaker 2: the ball for shit. You barely have any right receivers.
- 15:32Speaker 2: And the offense, like, looks kind of not right for
- 15:37Speaker 2: the moment.
- 15:39Speaker 1: It's just.
- 15:41Speaker 2: It's a lot of RPOs. And again, it's not fair
- 15:47Speaker 2: to Andy Reid for me to say, I don't know,
- 15:49Speaker 2: what are you doing? He is clearly having to call
- 15:51Speaker 2: that because of the limitations of the personnel. But Mahomes
- 15:56Speaker 2: is playing at a higher level of difficulty than all
- 15:59Speaker 2: of these quarterbacks right now. That makes it really hard
- 16:02Speaker 2: to compare them.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that is a fair characterization. I think
- 16:08Speaker 1: we were talking about this earlier this week about Josh Allen.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Part of what makes it amazing for him is because
- 16:13Speaker 1: you need to send somebody with a big number to
- 16:15Speaker 1: take him down, he does not have to play on time.
- 16:19Speaker 1: He can be back there however long it takes. I
- 16:21Speaker 1: think teams have given up on sending the fifth guy
- 16:24Speaker 1: because the fifth guy is not going to be big
- 16:26Speaker 1: enough to take him down. So you send four, you
- 16:28Speaker 1: hope you get pressure, you drop seven, and he buys
- 16:32Speaker 1: enough time that somebody's going to get open.
- 16:34Speaker 2: I mean him and Lamar, right? Like they do it
- 16:36Speaker 2: in different ways, but the net effect is the same.
- 16:38Speaker 2: They're both, they're both unsackable and they both don't throw interceptions.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Like, what do you do with that?
- 16:47Speaker 2: What do you do with that?
- 16:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:49Speaker 2: It's, I know we like last year, it kind of
- 16:51Speaker 2: turned into world war three in the football world because
- 16:54Speaker 2: of the MVP thing. But like I, it was, you know,
- 16:58Speaker 2: and like we talked about this, I voted for Lamar.
- 16:59Speaker 2: I just thought what he did last season was just insane. But,
- 17:03Speaker 2: Right now, it's a hair. You could put them in
- 17:09Speaker 2: either order. They're just... And yes, they're both in much
- 17:14Speaker 2: better situations than Mahomes. Both play behind good offensive lines.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Both have a lot... I think the scheme is also
- 17:21Speaker 2: really good for both of them. But don't get it twisted.
- 17:24Speaker 2: They are the sons that the galaxy orbits around or whatever.
- 17:30Speaker 2: The solar system.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Like.
- 17:33Speaker 2: you know the reason guys are open the reason teams
- 17:36Speaker 2: are so afraid to run the reason teams play certain
- 17:38Speaker 2: coverages is because of those two quarterbacks and and what
- 17:40Speaker 2: they can do with their legs right.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Now I want to switch gears a little bit since
- 17:45Speaker 1: we're talking about all world quarterbacks with all the talent
- 17:48Speaker 1: in the world now we can talk about the San
- 17:50Speaker 1: Francisco 49ers I thought.
- 17:54Speaker 2: That was gonna be Justin Fields I was excited you.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Know I think that both of us agree that Brock
- 17:59Speaker 1: Purdy is a starting NFL quarterback, right? I don't think
- 18:03Speaker 1: we have to get too far into the hyperbole. He
- 18:05Speaker 1: is a starting quarterback. It looks like he's going to
- 18:07Speaker 1: be out for a while. He's got a bad shoulder,
- 18:09Speaker 1: and he's got that turf toe. Turf toe, number one
- 18:12Speaker 1: on the list, along with the hip pointer, things that hurt,
- 18:15Speaker 1: or the bone bruise, things that hurt a lot more
- 18:18Speaker 1: than they sound like when written on paper.
- 18:21Speaker 2: They called it a turf-toe variant, which sounds like the
- 18:24Speaker 2: worst thing.
- 18:26Speaker 1: That sounds like he caught it rather than he got it, right? Like,
- 18:29Speaker 1: I knew I should have worn my mask.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Brock Purdy now has had quite a few big injuries.
- 18:40Speaker 2: That's another thing.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Well, I mean, he plays for the 49ers. Like, apparently
- 18:44Speaker 1: you need to have a lot in your what they
- 18:45Speaker 1: call an HSA system. Because you will be spending money
- 18:48Speaker 1: on health care playing for that roster. So he's out
- 18:51Speaker 1: two to five weeks. And you remember that time when
- 18:55Speaker 1: the 49ers traded to move up in the draft? Oh, yeah.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Everybody thought that they had given up the world so
- 19:00Speaker 1: they could go take Mac Jones because Chris Sims, who
- 19:03Speaker 1: has Kyle Shanahan's initials tattooed on his body, said that
- 19:08Speaker 1: if they made that move, they would take Mac Jones
- 19:10Speaker 1: and everybody ate the cheese. Well, guess who's going to
- 19:12Speaker 1: start for the 49ers this week at long last? Mac Jones.
- 19:17Speaker 2: You know what this is like For Kyle Shanahan When
- 19:21Speaker 2: you have like Someone you got a crush on In
- 19:24Speaker 2: I don't know Like high school And you've just idealized
- 19:28Speaker 2: it For so long Because nothing ever happened And then
- 19:31Speaker 2: finally You Let's take a high school reunion Or maybe
- 19:34Speaker 2: you're at home For Thanksgiving And you're at the bar
- 19:37Speaker 2: And you see them And It's There's just no way
- 19:41Speaker 2: It can live up To your expectations I feel like
- 19:45Speaker 2: That's going to be Kyle Shanahan realizing who Mac Jones
- 19:48Speaker 2: really is and what the limits are. of what he
- 19:50Speaker 2: can do with him this week. At this point, he
- 19:54Speaker 2: has to have given up on that dream. I don't know.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. Because think about this.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Think about this. We all had, like, Kirk Cousins as
- 20:03Speaker 1: the Kyle Shanahan dream quarterback. But let us not forget
- 20:05Speaker 1: that when Kirk Cousins actually played for Kyle Shanahan, he stuck.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Right?
- 20:08Speaker 1: Right. Like he held on to what it could be.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Are you familiar with the comedian, Robin Harris? No.
- 20:15Speaker 3: All right.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Robin Harris. He died now almost 40 years ago, but
- 20:19Speaker 1: Robin Harris or 30 more like 35. But anyway, Robin
- 20:22Speaker 1: Harris had a routine that you probably couldn't really get
- 20:24Speaker 1: away with. And I am going to paraphrase it. And
- 20:27Speaker 1: he basically said he don't like having a good looking woman.
- 20:29Speaker 1: He said he liked having an ugly woman. You can
- 20:31Speaker 1: tell the ugly woman anything. He said, you walk in
- 20:33Speaker 1: and tell the ugly woman, Hey, I'm going to the moon.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I'll be back in a couple of days. And this,
- 20:39Speaker 1: you just say to him, will you be careful? I
- 20:43Speaker 1: feel like the Shanahan tree, that's how they are about quarterbacks.
- 20:47Speaker 1: They don't want no star at quarterback because they be
- 20:50Speaker 1: on their own time. They be doing stuff, whatever it is.
- 20:53Speaker 1: They want them an ugly quarterback that do whatever they say.
- 20:56Speaker 1: That is what they see when they see the Mac
- 20:58Speaker 1: Joneses of the world and all these other guys. If
- 21:01Speaker 1: you just do what I tell you, then everything will
- 21:05Speaker 1: be okay, man. These stars, these stunners, they got a
- 21:08Speaker 1: mind of their own. You know what I'm saying? That's
- 21:10Speaker 1: not what they're going for. And now old plain Jane
- 21:13Speaker 1: Mack Jones is finally walking in and Kyle Shatterhead is like, look,
- 21:17Speaker 1: I don't know how exciting she is, but I bet
- 21:19Speaker 1: dinner going to be ready on time. That's what he
- 21:22Speaker 1: thinks is about to happen.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Sorry, we got to get on with this tangent. When
- 21:25Speaker 2: you see that, the equivalent of an age gap relationship,
- 21:29Speaker 2: shall we say a looks gap relationship? Because I don't
- 21:33Speaker 2: know what your algorithm is like. My algorithm shows me
- 21:36Speaker 2: a lot of... I think it's because it's rage bait
- 21:38Speaker 2: for people. A lot of age gaps both ways. Yes.
- 21:41Speaker 2: And then they show me... the man with the surprising women.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Right. I see that.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Maybe, maybe men see the reverse. I don't know. Do
- 21:48Speaker 2: you see like the, the woman with the surprising man who.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Look, all I ever think when I see such a thing.
- 21:56Speaker 2: That's what I'm going to ask you.
- 21:59Speaker 1: There is an explanation.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Just a neutral, like could be.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I don't know necessarily what that explanation might be.
- 22:07Speaker 2: You don't think, man, she's.
- 22:10Speaker 1: It's on the board. It's on the board. What you're
- 22:13Speaker 1: saying is yes, 100% on the board. Like, look, when
- 22:17Speaker 1: this happens and there is a gap of sorts, the
- 22:20Speaker 1: way this goes is dude, and I don't know how
- 22:22Speaker 1: this goes is women, because I think with women, when
- 22:24Speaker 1: it's a gap, you just assume the dude is really nice.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Or rich. Yeah. The gap that we wind up with
- 22:30Speaker 1: here is, or when the gap is present, you see
- 22:33Speaker 1: the two of them together or you meet them and
- 22:35Speaker 1: they're together and then she leaves and then the dude
- 22:38Speaker 1: hits you out of nowhere, man. Dog, I'm telling you, boy,
- 22:41Speaker 1: she cool as hell. Or, or, boy, I'm telling you, boy,
- 22:45Speaker 1: once that food ready, boy, we gonna eat. Like, they're
- 22:48Speaker 1: going to, they're immediately like, I know, I know, I know,
- 22:52Speaker 1: but they immediately go there.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Or my brain was going somewhere else. I was thinking rejected, rejected, rejected.
- 23:00Speaker 1: It's on the board. It's on the board. I'm just
- 23:03Speaker 1: telling you what the fella says because what else is
- 23:06Speaker 1: on the board you can't, you shouldn't tell your partners.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but it is the assumption that everyone, well,
- 23:14Speaker 2: there's a few, yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Yeah, there's something special here.
- 23:21Speaker 2: It's crazy that our mind never goes to bring it
- 23:24Speaker 2: back to Kyle Shanahan. That just must be his type, right?
- 23:30Speaker 2: Which is often the actual explanation.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yes.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Usually, all right, we're just kidding. When this happens, and
- 23:37Speaker 2: it's someone you know, they got a history.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 23:41Speaker 2: It's not like 10, 10, 10, 4?
- 23:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:46Speaker 2: That is not the pattern.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:50Speaker 2: For men and women. Right.
- 23:52Speaker 1: That is fair. That is fair.
- 23:54Speaker 2: There's not usually like an absurd deviation from that. But
- 23:57Speaker 2: our brains don't go to like, that's just not how
- 24:00Speaker 2: we process. The dinner analogy is probably the best one, yeah,
- 24:05Speaker 2: for Shanahan. Because, yeah, they want someone, the Shanahan family,
- 24:10Speaker 2: they want, you know, like the guy sitting in the
- 24:12Speaker 2: mech suit pushing buttons, right?
- 24:14Speaker 1: Yes.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Like they want someone to just execute the offense. The
- 24:18Speaker 2: problem is, Matt Jones ain't that dude.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:22Speaker 2: And, and to his credit was actually kind of that dude. Yes.
- 24:26Speaker 1: But he's also going to give you a lot of
- 24:28Speaker 1: lip and a lot of sass.
- 24:29Speaker 2: He is sassy.
- 24:31Speaker 1: He is. He is. That is. Yeah. He's going to, he,
- 24:34Speaker 1: he's going to give you a lot of backtalk, right? That,
- 24:38Speaker 1: that is what happened in new England. And they were like, yo,
- 24:40Speaker 1: get a load of this guy. Are you kidding me? Yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Um, I am not super optimistic also, Beau, because it
- 24:52Speaker 2: would be one thing if this was the Niners all-star
- 24:54Speaker 2: team of a couple years ago where everybody's healthy. It's
- 24:58Speaker 2: Christian McCaffrey. It's Brandon Ayuk. It's George Kittle, the offensive line.
- 25:03Speaker 2: It is a very diminished version of that that he's
- 25:06Speaker 2: going to have to make this work with. They are
- 25:08Speaker 2: playing the Saints this weekend, so that's going to help.
- 25:11Speaker 1: But yeah, I... Slut buster.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Right. Saints are... I, yeah, I'm not optimistic. Also.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:20Speaker 2: I mean, since he actually played the Niners and watching that,
- 25:25Speaker 2: I am not saying Trent Williams is.
- 25:32Speaker 1: But this is like year 17. Yeah.
- 25:34Speaker 2: He looks a little older out there and he was
- 25:39Speaker 2: kind of like the one thing holding this whole offensive
- 25:41Speaker 2: line together. And so you start to get worried about that.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Yeah. So as we go into advertisements, I will say
- 25:47Speaker 1: to you, Ryan, You are welcome, for Ryan said to me,

- 27:19Speaker 1: All right. We are back with Mina Kimes. As you know,
- 27:24Speaker 1: I am a day one fan of the Detroit Lions.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I have enjoyed the ride up until this point. The
- 27:31Speaker 1: last time we talked about the Lions and I expressed
- 27:33Speaker 1: to you my patience of Jerry Goff, you told me
- 27:35Speaker 1: that I've definitely become a different person. And you may
- 27:38Speaker 1: be correct because I was not. feeling good on sunday
- 27:43Speaker 1: watching what happened there my read on it is i
- 27:46Speaker 1: didn't think the defense looked bad um but i thought
- 27:49Speaker 1: it really all came down that they're not getting any
- 27:51Speaker 1: push um on the inside guards and center are not
- 27:54Speaker 1: doing anything and if they don't get that push i
- 27:56Speaker 1: don't see what they're supposed to do and tell me
- 27:58Speaker 1: why i shouldn't be terrified.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Um if i had to give you one source of
- 28:04Speaker 2: comfort or i guess excuse i think the packers like
- 28:08Speaker 2: are those like that team Right. So I think that's
- 28:11Speaker 2: a Super Bowl team right there. So, you know, we're
- 28:14Speaker 2: talking a little bit about how kind of week one
- 28:16Speaker 2: can sway things either way when you don't recognize or
- 28:20Speaker 2: when we don't really know who the best is at things.
- 28:24Speaker 2: I think that they're going to have a much better
- 28:27Speaker 2: time this week against Chicago, against old friend Ben Johnson.
- 28:30Speaker 2: That said, you're not wrong to be concerned because it.
- 28:36Speaker 2: the whole operation was kind of discouraging. It wasn't just
- 28:39Speaker 2: the interior offensive line. They got a new play caller who,
- 28:43Speaker 2: when they hired him, everybody was a little confused. It wasn't,
- 28:47Speaker 2: you know, John Morton is from Denver. He's kind of
- 28:50Speaker 2: got an interesting resume, but it wasn't like quite, it
- 28:53Speaker 2: didn't set the world on fire. Let's just say that.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And I think week one, that was, you didn't feel
- 28:58Speaker 2: great watching that offense. You didn't get that. That feeling,
- 29:02Speaker 2: that use, not just of like the creativity of the
- 29:04Speaker 2: play calling, the combination of the creativity of the play
- 29:06Speaker 2: calling and the physical domination up front, just totally gone
- 29:09Speaker 2: at week one, which is not great.
- 29:11Speaker 1: I wonder how many people were like me when they
- 29:13Speaker 1: hired John Morton and thought they hired Johnny Morton, former
- 29:18Speaker 1: Detroit Lion wide receiver with the all-time classic quote, Jay
- 29:22Speaker 1: Leno can kiss my ass.
- 29:23Speaker 2: He can do that. Yeah, I'll be honest. The guy
- 29:27Speaker 2: wasn't on my radar at all. And the other thing, Beau,
- 29:32Speaker 2: I know I keep alluding to the Jets and nobody
- 29:34Speaker 2: wants to hear me talk about the Jets. They got
- 29:36Speaker 2: their past game coordinator, Tanner Engstrand, and that all fell apart.
- 29:40Speaker 2: looked awesome week one. So you're talking about a brain drain,
- 29:44Speaker 2: not only of Ben Johnson, but the past game coordinator
- 29:46Speaker 2: as well. Then you start to get a little bit worried, right?
- 29:48Speaker 2: You're like, oh, maybe... Maybe they lost two guys.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Right. Well, they lost Antoine Randall L also who went
- 29:56Speaker 1: over with Ben Johnson. And I will say this because
- 29:58Speaker 1: I am okay with talking about the jets because it'll
- 30:00Speaker 1: make my life better living in the city. If the
- 30:02Speaker 1: jets and or giants are good, it is definitely a
- 30:05Speaker 1: significant quality of life improvement with the Knicks being good.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I know I saw your face. I understand it would,
- 30:11Speaker 1: it would help. Right. Justin Fields, who has to me,
- 30:15Speaker 1: the most damning problem that you can have, which is
- 30:18Speaker 1: takes too long to throw the ball. did not take
- 30:20Speaker 1: too long to throw the ball in this game. That
- 30:22Speaker 1: is a thing that people typically don't fix. He was
- 30:25Speaker 1: not taking too long to throw the ball. I was
- 30:27Speaker 1: floored by how good he looked.
- 30:30Speaker 2: This was the biggest surprise of week one to me.
- 30:32Speaker 2: And Fox and I talked about it, and he was
- 30:36Speaker 2: better than Aaron Rodgers in the game. And I know
- 30:39Speaker 2: they lost, and I feel like Rodgers got all the
- 30:42Speaker 2: hype coming out of it. And Rodgers looked good, too.
- 30:43Speaker 2: I'm not going to say he didn't. But I thought
- 30:46Speaker 2: Fields was... exceptional and maybe, I mean, he's had games,
- 30:51Speaker 2: he had games in Chicago where he was doing more
- 30:53Speaker 2: like crazy explosive stuff with his legs, 60 yard runs,
- 30:56Speaker 2: that kind of thing. But this is the best he's
- 30:58Speaker 2: looked quarterbacking to me since coming into the league. Like
- 31:01Speaker 2: you said, the ball was coming out fast. He was accurate.
- 31:04Speaker 2: He was throwing over the middle of the field, which
- 31:06Speaker 2: he never does. And then he ran a lot, which
- 31:09Speaker 2: is something we didn't really see in Pittsburgh for some reason.
- 31:11Speaker 2: But there's tons of design runs and scrambles in this game.
- 31:14Speaker 2: The whole rushing attack looks really good. So, yeah, I
- 31:16Speaker 2: don't know, man. I think the Bills defense kind of
- 31:20Speaker 2: might be a little bit cheeks. So I'm not going
- 31:22Speaker 2: to overplay it, but. it was pretty encouraging and kind
- 31:26Speaker 2: of shocking. That whole game was shocking. It was like
- 31:28Speaker 2: so entertaining.
- 31:29Speaker 1: It really was like, it was a, it was a
- 31:32Speaker 1: good game. And I want to say this right fast.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Now that you mentioned it about the bills defense, if
- 31:36Speaker 1: the bills defense is bad, boy, the bills will be
- 31:39Speaker 1: a lot of fun to watch this year. Like we're
- 31:41Speaker 1: talking track meets. Cause look, Cincinnati should give us track meets,
- 31:45Speaker 1: except it looked like they was running all one leg
- 31:47Speaker 1: against the Browns, which shocked me. Cause I mean, I
- 31:50Speaker 1: don't know how the Browns are going to win no
- 31:52Speaker 1: games this year. The Bengals, even if the plan is
- 31:55Speaker 1: you're just going to be really good on offense and
- 31:56Speaker 1: terrible on defense, but you might be able to get
- 31:58Speaker 1: 9-8 or 10-7 out of that. The Browns, I don't
- 32:03Speaker 1: see how they're supposed to get anything out of that.
- 32:05Speaker 1: And they almost won that game. They very easily could have.
- 32:08Speaker 2: They should have won it.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:10Speaker 2: If they had. Can you imagine the Bengals' discourse this week?
- 32:14Speaker 2: I mean, the Bengals' discourse this week should be like
- 32:17Speaker 2: suspicious but I think like a lot of people didn't
- 32:19Speaker 2: just didn't watch that game um yeah I mean the
- 32:24Speaker 2: Browns the Saints Titans you know like I think it's
- 32:29Speaker 2: already like pretty obvious who the get right teams are
- 32:32Speaker 2: and that was not a get right game at all
- 32:34Speaker 2: for Cincinnati uh I know I talked earlier about the
- 32:37Speaker 2: Chiefs and I'm being in the tier of the Bengals
- 32:39Speaker 2: they aren't even sniffing that tier. Um, I mean, they
- 32:43Speaker 2: were supposed to come out and play the preseason. Everybody's healthy.
- 32:46Speaker 2: We signed all the receivers. The offense was supposed to look,
- 32:49Speaker 2: they were supposed to be, like you said, the 41
- 32:52Speaker 2: point team. And it just didn't look good at all
- 32:54Speaker 2: to me. I, yeah, I was really underwhelmed by Cincinnati.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that's, that's, that's, that's, that one's looking like
- 33:03Speaker 1: bad news, like terrible news, but on the, The other
- 33:06Speaker 1: thing I have to ask you, though, about the Lions,
- 33:08Speaker 1: and this is the part that I think I overlooked
- 33:10Speaker 1: and I think a lot of us overlooked, because it
- 33:11Speaker 1: was like, cool, Aiden Hutchinson's going to come back. But
- 33:14Speaker 1: when they had Aiden Hutchinson, they had pass rush issues,
- 33:18Speaker 1: and I felt like in the game against Green Bay,
- 33:20Speaker 1: they still had pass rush issues.
- 33:23Speaker 2: I thought the Lions' defense would be much better, honestly,
- 33:28Speaker 2: than they looked. The Green Bay offensive line is not
- 33:33Speaker 2: that great. I mean... And they were stonewalling them. And
- 33:37Speaker 2: you said it, like outside of Hutchinson, you don't really
- 33:39Speaker 2: have anyone getting after the quarterback. The defensive tackles are hurt.
- 33:42Speaker 1: But it was.
- 33:46Speaker 2: My whole theory about the Lions going into this season
- 33:50Speaker 2: was that the offensive line, or the offense, pardon me,
- 33:52Speaker 2: would take a step back, but that it would be
- 33:54Speaker 2: mitigated by the defense being healthy and adding some talent.
- 33:57Speaker 2: And that's just not what I saw week one at all.
- 34:00Speaker 2: But again... I think the Packers are a wagon. I
- 34:03Speaker 2: really do. So if it happens again this week against Chicago,
- 34:08Speaker 2: and we know, talk about unloading the clip, like Ben
- 34:10Speaker 2: Johnson is going to, everything he's got is going to
- 34:14Speaker 2: go into this game. Then you start to panic.
- 34:17Speaker 1: You think that the Vikings got a dude with McCarthy?
- 34:21Speaker 1: I mean, because look, they won 14 games with Sam Darnold. Yeah.
- 34:24Speaker 1: And I don't care what anybody says. He's exactly who
- 34:27Speaker 1: he's been.
- 34:29Speaker 2: He....
- 34:32Speaker 3: J.J.
- 34:32Speaker 2: McCarthy was.
- 34:39Speaker 2: I don't know what you say about a quarterback who
- 34:40Speaker 2: was good for 20% of the game, right? On one hand,
- 34:49Speaker 2: you have to say, well, he really struggled in the beginning,
- 34:52Speaker 2: but then this is his first start, so I'm not
- 34:56Speaker 2: leaping to conclusions either way.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I think.
- 34:59Speaker 2: What you saw with Minnesota, though, at the end that
- 35:01Speaker 2: is really encouraging is the run game looked really good
- 35:04Speaker 2: at the end, and that's kind of when he settled down,
- 35:06Speaker 2: and it's no coincidence. Because that was clearly their focus
- 35:11Speaker 2: this offseason. Like, hey, we're going to fix the interior
- 35:13Speaker 2: of the offensive line. They traded for Jordan Mason. I
- 35:15Speaker 2: thought that was a sneaky, underrated trade. And we know
- 35:18Speaker 2: that J.J. McCarty, the kid who barely threw the ball
- 35:20Speaker 2: in college, we want to give him a ground game
- 35:23Speaker 2: that's better than the one we've had the last couple
- 35:24Speaker 2: of years. Because you've got these defenses. They play constantly
- 35:26Speaker 2: shell coverage because of Justin Jefferson and Addison when he's
- 35:28Speaker 2: out there. but they haven't really been able to punish
- 35:31Speaker 2: them for doing so underneath. And this was a problem,
- 35:32Speaker 2: by the way, with Sam Darnold near the end of
- 35:34Speaker 2: the playoffs. Okay, cool. But you know, for first half
- 35:38Speaker 2: of this game, didn't look that great. And then you
- 35:39Speaker 2: saw that come alive. I think that's going to continue.
- 35:43Speaker 2: And I think with McCarthy too, like, you know, he
- 35:44Speaker 2: doesn't have to be great for this offense to work.
- 35:47Speaker 2: If that's happening, he just has to be competent. And
- 35:50Speaker 2: he certainly looked like that at the end of the game.
- 35:51Speaker 2: We'll see if it continues. Yeah.
- 35:53Speaker 1: I thought that I thought he made throws that you
- 35:56Speaker 1: feel good about the young dude making right. And, to
- 35:59Speaker 1: be not good the whole game and then maintain your
- 36:02Speaker 1: composure at that point. I thought that I thought there
- 36:05Speaker 1: was room for optimism in that performance. But of course
- 36:09Speaker 1: the obvious counterpoint is they were playing the bears. Um,
- 36:14Speaker 1: the way that like, we had kind of framed this
- 36:15Speaker 1: in our minds before we got here was the guy
- 36:17Speaker 1: like who has more on the line with this. But
- 36:18Speaker 1: I think my question really, when it comes to the bears,
- 36:20Speaker 1: and we've talked about Kayla Williams a lot here though, is, um, Like,
- 36:26Speaker 1: what do you need to see before, you know, to
- 36:28Speaker 1: keep everybody quiet? Because I don't think he needs to
- 36:30Speaker 1: be the best quarterback in the division. I think that
- 36:33Speaker 1: there were some measures of progress in the last game,
- 36:35Speaker 1: but I did not find that performance to be particularly encouraging. Like,
- 36:39Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not sure what exactly Johnson is
- 36:41Speaker 1: going for. I'm not sure what they expect, but the
- 36:45Speaker 1: clock is on him in a way that I'm not
- 36:48Speaker 1: sure he recognizes, but I've been doing this long enough
- 36:51Speaker 1: to know they coming for your neck, young man. Yeah.
- 36:55Speaker 2: I have felt all offseason, despair's offense is going to
- 36:59Speaker 2: take a second to look right. Because, you know, yeah,
- 37:04Speaker 2: they invest in the... I talk about the Minnesota investing
- 37:06Speaker 2: in the inside of the offensive line. I'm not a
- 37:08Speaker 2: huge fan of DeAndre Swift as a back. The run
- 37:11Speaker 2: game was such a big part of what Ben Johnson
- 37:13Speaker 2: did in Detroit. I wasn't entirely convinced that it was
- 37:16Speaker 2: going to look as good immediately in Chicago. And it
- 37:18Speaker 2: looked awful, dude. Like, they were really bad running the
- 37:20Speaker 2: football week one. So... I felt like it was going
- 37:24Speaker 2: to take a second for if you're going to have to,
- 37:26Speaker 2: you know, if that's not working and you've got to
- 37:28Speaker 2: evolve the offense and you're also accommodating Caleb's skill sets
- 37:31Speaker 2: and he's learning a new system, it's going to take,
- 37:33Speaker 2: everybody's learning a new offense. It's going to take some time.
- 37:38Speaker 2: You know, it was, I'm kind of torn because I
- 37:40Speaker 2: thought like week one, like he had flashes of really
- 37:42Speaker 2: good play, really impressive throws. Then obviously some egregious misses
- 37:47Speaker 2: and some conservatism. I also think the Vikings defense is
- 37:51Speaker 2: really good again. maybe better this year. They signed Javon Hargrave,
- 37:58Speaker 2: Jonathan Allen, and Hargrave was killing them up front on
- 38:02Speaker 2: the inside. So this is another one where like, hey,
- 38:04Speaker 2: like week two is going to be a big barometer
- 38:06Speaker 2: for him. Can he look better than he did week
- 38:09Speaker 2: one against what seems to be clearly an inferior defense?
- 38:12Speaker 2: And if not, yeah, it's going to be, I mean,
- 38:15Speaker 2: the criticism is already loud. because it was an island
- 38:18Speaker 2: game and everybody watched. But I think this– I'm kind
- 38:20Speaker 2: of waiting a couple weeks before I really start to panic.
- 38:24Speaker 1: I think that makes sense. We wanted to ask you
- 38:25Speaker 1: something about the Seahawks. Before we get to the Seahawks, though,
- 38:28Speaker 1: we'll do something tangential off the Seahawks. Did you tear
- 38:32Speaker 1: up just a little bit watching Geno out there dealing, dealing,
- 38:37Speaker 1: dealing for another team?
- 38:39Speaker 2: Tear up– I mean, I– uh you know i was
- 38:42Speaker 2: pretty loud about not approving of that trade so my
- 38:47Speaker 2: desire to be right trumps that's been the interesting thing
- 38:53Speaker 2: about doing this uh while i'm also a still a
- 38:57Speaker 2: fan of a team and all that is like you
- 38:59Speaker 2: you realize you have all these like competing interests right
- 39:02Speaker 2: you know this you've been in the game for a
- 39:03Speaker 2: long time like when you're watching football and like what
- 39:08Speaker 2: screams louder for you in your brain and you're like
- 39:10Speaker 2: little like the little part of your brain when you're
- 39:14Speaker 2: watching the game well.
- 39:15Speaker 1: So i've been doing this for the most part without
- 39:18Speaker 1: a lot of clear like fandom roots yeah so i
- 39:21Speaker 1: could just always go ego right just just always on
- 39:25Speaker 1: the i want to be right in this like in
- 39:27Speaker 1: doing the kind of shows that i do kind of
- 39:29Speaker 1: coward or something about it's good for business to be
- 39:31Speaker 1: wrong every now and then then I ain't trying to
- 39:33Speaker 1: be Lee Iacocca you know what I'm saying like I
- 39:34Speaker 1: don't I'm trying to be I'm trying to get this
- 39:37Speaker 1: shit right every if I don't I don't but I'm
- 39:40Speaker 1: trying to nail this every single time and I'm not
- 39:43Speaker 1: trying to hear no guff from the public. I don't
- 39:46Speaker 1: want that. I'm going for that generally. Now, now with
- 39:50Speaker 1: my Lions, I want to be wrong about the things
- 39:54Speaker 1: that I am saying. And if I'm proven to be wrong,
- 39:57Speaker 1: I will be incredibly thrilled.
- 39:59Speaker 2: That's how I feel about the Seahawks at the moment.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Because like I said, I was really critical of the trade.
- 40:04Speaker 2: I was very pessimistic about the offense. I'm not watching them,
- 40:08Speaker 2: you know, not convert third downs against the Niners and,
- 40:11Speaker 2: being like, yeah, I was right. It sucks, right? Still,
- 40:16Speaker 2: the fan part of my brain is overcoming the desire
- 40:18Speaker 2: to be right. But watching Geno dealing, throwing bombs to
- 40:22Speaker 2: Brock Bowers downfield, it's all good.
- 40:25Speaker 1: It's all.
- 40:28Speaker 2: I've got too many shares of Geno Smith's stock, pardon me,
- 40:31Speaker 2: right now to watch a dip and not feel like, ooh.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Yeah, no, your thing that's going to be interesting to
- 40:39Speaker 1: watch it, like running conflict with reality, especially now that
- 40:42Speaker 1: it's happening on your own team, is that you came
- 40:45Speaker 1: on this show and referred to yourself, and let me
- 40:47Speaker 1: know if I get this incorrect, as a Sampathizer. I know.
- 40:53Speaker 1: In reference to old buddy Sandar.
- 40:56Speaker 2: But that was cool when he was the backup making
- 41:00Speaker 2: 10 million.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Yes.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Context matters.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Roles matter.
- 41:07Speaker 2: I will ride for, yes. I will say, I will
- 41:12Speaker 2: say like that, like right now, like I'm, you know,
- 41:15Speaker 2: thinking about I'm looking at Justin Fields' stock right now.
- 41:18Speaker 2: It's priced at $ 5. And I'm thinking, maybe I'll ride
- 41:23Speaker 2: this until it gets to $ 10. And then I'm selling.
- 41:27Speaker 2: And that's how I was with Sam Darnold, to be clear.
- 41:29Speaker 2: The argument was never, wow, this is a quarterback one.
- 41:33Speaker 2: He's so underrated. It was, nah, this is an undervalued stock.
- 41:38Speaker 2: And I'm looking at Fields right now, and I'm thinking
- 41:40Speaker 2: the same thing.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Okay, so when you talk about like the value of
- 41:46Speaker 1: being correct, this is where I could be a little
- 41:49Speaker 1: bit of a radical about this being correct. And Sam
- 41:53Speaker 1: Darnold is a great example. As we got farther and
- 41:56Speaker 1: farther through last year, people were talking about him using like...
- 42:00Speaker 1: Not like anybody thought he was a real MVP candidate,
- 42:03Speaker 1: but they was getting a little ahead of themselves. And
- 42:05Speaker 1: then when he turned right back into Sam Darnold at
- 42:08Speaker 1: the end of the year, boy, I was right here
- 42:10Speaker 1: to tell everybody that I hit it right all along. Like,
- 42:14Speaker 1: once the wheels came off for him, I was rooting
- 42:17Speaker 1: for it to catch on fire. I don't know what
- 42:19Speaker 1: that says about me, but I just.
- 42:21Speaker 2: I know what it says about you, hater. That I
- 42:24Speaker 2: was bright.
- 42:25Speaker 1: That's what it says about me.
- 42:26Speaker 2: You love.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Is it more gratifying to be right about an underrated
- 42:33Speaker 2: player being good or an overrated player being bad?
- 42:38Speaker 1: Oh, it's the overrated player being bad. Because when you
- 42:41Speaker 1: say an underrated player is good, people don't really get
- 42:44Speaker 1: off in your grill about it in the same way
- 42:46Speaker 1: as when you take the courageous stance to say, no,
- 42:50Speaker 1: this is not as good as what you see it is, right?
- 42:53Speaker 1: Like it's the Hannibal Buress meme. Why are you booing me?
- 42:58Speaker 1: I'm right. You know, like that's what it is.
- 43:00Speaker 2: I'm different. I like, so I was a pretty big
- 43:04Speaker 2: Jimmy Garoppolo critic for a long time and maybe even
- 43:08Speaker 2: the center of some minor controversies because of it. And
- 43:11Speaker 2: when that train went off the tracks, I wasn't like
- 43:14Speaker 2: celebrating anything. I mean, I did celebrate a little bit.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I did post a couple of gifts. But I didn't
- 43:26Speaker 2: feel great about it in the same way that I
- 43:30Speaker 2: feel great when a draft take ends up being correct.
- 43:35Speaker 1: I can see that. I can see that.
- 43:37Speaker 2: A positive one.
- 43:38Speaker 1: So you got to this side of the business a
- 43:41Speaker 1: little late. But for what I'm about to bring up,
- 43:47Speaker 1: I was forged in the trenches of T-Bone Mania. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:57Speaker 1: I was, and so you have to remember, T-Bone's rookie
- 44:02Speaker 1: year is 2010. 2011 is when T-Bone Mania happens. I
- 44:07Speaker 1: started doing Around the Horn in October of 2010. And
- 44:12Speaker 1: this is the era where Woody Page is on around
- 44:14Speaker 1: the horn just about every day and definitely every Monday.
- 44:17Speaker 1: And he's coming off all these Broncos games. And I
- 44:20Speaker 1: will know. Just wins. They played their first game against
- 44:24Speaker 1: the Dolphins. And it was, oh, God, it was so bad.
- 44:27Speaker 1: And then they won at the end because all the
- 44:28Speaker 1: games went like that. Right. And I remember I got
- 44:32Speaker 1: on the call and it was Bob Ryan, Tim Kyle
- 44:35Speaker 1: Shaw and Woody Page. And they all soft pedaled it.
- 44:40Speaker 1: And it got to me. And I said to them,
- 44:42Speaker 1: what a player on the Dolphins told me after that game,
- 44:44Speaker 1: this is the worst quarterback I've ever seen. Like, I
- 44:46Speaker 1: couldn't believe that I was all alone in this. And
- 44:49Speaker 1: gradually I would get some people. But then it was
- 44:51Speaker 1: he just wins with a dollop of God is good.
- 44:54Speaker 1: And so it just kept happening and it kept happening.
- 44:56Speaker 1: And I mean, you can go look at those clips
- 44:58Speaker 1: of me on TV if they're available. I was not
- 45:00Speaker 1: pretending to lose my mind. I was losing my shit
- 45:04Speaker 1: every day.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Week.
- 45:06Speaker 1: And then when they got their doors blown off at
- 45:08Speaker 1: the end, and that was the worst part. They get
- 45:10Speaker 1: their doors blown off in the regular season, nobody care.
- 45:12Speaker 1: They end the regular season with three straight losses, nobody care.
- 45:14Speaker 1: He got there, had him damn 300 yards against the Steelers,
- 45:18Speaker 1: and I'm just like, oh man, you gotta be kidding me.
- 45:20Speaker 1: And I never got a full season of him being cheats.
- 45:24Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? I never got that, and
- 45:27Speaker 1: I wanted it so bad. I deserved it. I deserved it.
- 45:30Speaker 2: I think it's important to point out here, though, that
- 45:33Speaker 2: the reason why you became such a hater is not
- 45:37Speaker 2: because of Tim Tebow himself, but because of your peers
- 45:42Speaker 2: lying on him.
- 45:43Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 45:43Speaker 2: Like that is the infuriating part. And it makes you
- 45:47Speaker 2: feel crazy. It's like climate change denialism. You're just like,
- 45:51Speaker 2: you're like, I feel insane. You feel like gaslit watching it.
- 45:56Speaker 2: And God, this game, when the Shador Sanders, like week three,
- 46:00Speaker 2: the great Shador Sanders died, pre-season week three controversy erupted online.
- 46:06Speaker 2: It was really like, everybody's like, wow, this is crazy.
- 46:08Speaker 2: This has never happened in sports. And the Tebow thing
- 46:11Speaker 2: was the first thing that came to my mind. Like
- 46:14Speaker 2: when a story just goes thermonuclear and breaks contained to
- 46:18Speaker 2: the point where people who don't actually watch the game
- 46:20Speaker 2: are weighing in with strong opinions.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Tebow mania felt like the movie major league, except what
- 46:30Speaker 1: if the coach said, Like the coach wanted to win, obviously, right?
- 46:34Speaker 1: But I contend they put Tebow in at the second
- 46:37Speaker 1: half of the game against the Chargers. And I'm convinced
- 46:40Speaker 1: that John Fox was like, well, he's going to be terrible.
- 46:42Speaker 1: And now finally shut these people up. But he got
- 46:44Speaker 1: just enough done. And then he was stuck riding that
- 46:47Speaker 1: ride for the rest of the year. And the only
- 46:49Speaker 1: way they could get him out of there, they had
- 46:51Speaker 1: to go get Peyton Manning. They couldn't just go get
- 46:54Speaker 1: a credible starting quarterback. They had to leave, no doubt.
- 46:57Speaker 1: John Elway, oh my God, I just can't imagine what
- 46:59Speaker 1: it was like. The John Elway that wished he could
- 47:02Speaker 1: have taken Cam Newton that year got stuck with Tim Tebow.
- 47:06Speaker 2: What is the closest thing we've got right now in
- 47:10Speaker 2: sports to where a thing that makes you feel crazy?
- 47:13Speaker 2: Is there anything? I don't think there's nothing like that.
- 47:16Speaker 1: There's nothing like.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Tebow in football where it feels like everyone's being... No, no, no, no.
- 47:23Speaker 1: There's nothing there. I'm pretty strident in where I stand
- 47:29Speaker 1: on Jalen Hurts, but I understand the argument on the
- 47:31Speaker 1: other side. You know what I mean? So it doesn't
- 47:34Speaker 1: make me insane that people think that he is better
- 47:37Speaker 1: than I think he is. There's got to be something
- 47:42Speaker 1: in basketball that if I think about it long and
- 47:45Speaker 1: hard enough that I could get to. Some of the.
- 47:51Speaker 2: I'm going to tread here with caution. Some of the
- 47:54Speaker 2: Bo Nicks takes flowing around this offseason.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay. So here's the thing. Here's the thing, right?
- 48:00Speaker 1: you are deeper in those weeds than I am. Okay, yeah.
- 48:03Speaker 2: See, I think that's too deep.
- 48:05Speaker 1: If I were in those weeds with you because I
- 48:07Speaker 1: went on somebody's podcast and simply said that I am
- 48:11Speaker 1: not a Bo Nix believer and they came for me
- 48:16Speaker 1: about that, right? Like if I did NFL all day,
- 48:19Speaker 1: every day, yes, I would be exactly right there where
- 48:23Speaker 1: you are on that one.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Every year, there's a quarterback that just breaks everybody's brains.
- 48:31Speaker 2: where like the conversation around the quarterback, it's always a quarterback,
- 48:36Speaker 2: stops being normal. Tebow is the most extreme version of
- 48:39Speaker 2: that of the last like 20 years, I would argue.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Probably ever, to be honest.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Yes.
- 48:45Speaker 2: But I felt Jimmy G was that for me, for sure.
- 48:48Speaker 2: For like two years with San Francisco, where I felt
- 48:51Speaker 2: crazy the way people were talking about it.
- 48:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Trubisky was like this i mean i did daniel jones
- 48:58Speaker 2: was like that you can all there's always one where
- 49:01Speaker 2: there's such a disparity between how fans and people who
- 49:06Speaker 2: do like box score watching talk about the guy versus
- 49:09Speaker 2: what is actually happening on the field that's it's it's
- 49:13Speaker 2: very it's too early to say who that guy is.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Nick's.
- 49:18Speaker 2: It feels like it felt to me like this summer,
- 49:20Speaker 2: it was kind of becoming that quarterback. Um, we'll see
- 49:26Speaker 2: how that plays out though.
- 49:27Speaker 1: Jamie Garoppolo was, uh, um, I don't know the right word,
- 49:34Speaker 1: but like, he was not good for my high noon marriage.
- 49:37Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like it was driving me
- 49:39Speaker 1: crazy in a way that it was driving you crazy.
- 49:41Speaker 1: And I think Pablo was just enamored by the fact that,
- 49:44Speaker 1: you know, what was he like all swarthy and everything.
- 49:47Speaker 2: So many people like loved him.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Yeah. A wedge, Ryan said he was a wedge. He
- 49:53Speaker 1: was a wedge in our relationship and people really did
- 49:55Speaker 1: love him. They had a whole playoff game when they
- 49:57Speaker 1: didn't throw the ball one time in the second half.
- 49:59Speaker 1: And I was like, guys, I'm sorry. That is not
- 50:02Speaker 1: simply a function of we're really good at running the ball.
- 50:05Speaker 1: That's not what that means. The coach is telling you,
- 50:08Speaker 1: I got a bum out here.
- 50:10Speaker 2: Tua was this for two years.
- 50:12Speaker 1: Oh, that's right. The Tuanon people.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Tua. Every year, I'm telling you, Jimmy Garoppolo passed that
- 50:18Speaker 2: torch to Tua. Who is Tua going to pass it to?
- 50:22Speaker 1: Yeah, because I think we feel pretty settled right now
- 50:25Speaker 1: on the Tua thing.
- 50:28Speaker 2: When the Tua thing was happening, too, and I got like,
- 50:32Speaker 2: I just remember thinking, like, I just went through this.
- 50:35Speaker 2: I can't do this again, or I'm fighting these people. Yeah,
- 50:42Speaker 2: I don't know who it is yet. Candidates, like I said,
- 50:46Speaker 2: there's a few. There's a few.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Yeah, we got to start looking at young guys, right?
- 50:49Speaker 1: We got to start scouting the next classes of these dudes. Like, hey, man,
- 50:54Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield, fascinating career arc that Justin Fields is hoping
- 50:57Speaker 1: to emulate, right? Except Baker Mayfield, at least, There was
- 51:00Speaker 1: a time where we thought Baker Mayfield was good. And
- 51:02Speaker 1: I don't think we, we were always holding out hope
- 51:04Speaker 1: on Justin Fields, right? Like we didn't get there. Baker
- 51:07Speaker 1: Mayfield now is, I think one of the mistakes that
- 51:11Speaker 1: we make in talking about quarterbacks is in our verbiage
- 51:14Speaker 1: and they're, not everybody has to be a franchise quarterback.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Some people are starting quarterbacks.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:20Speaker 1: And Baker Mayfield appears to be a very good starting quarterback.
- 51:23Speaker 1: And that is not an insult because starting quarterbacks are
- 51:25Speaker 1: hard to find, but Josh Allen is a franchise quarterback.
- 51:28Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes are, those are starting quarterbacks. Joe
- 51:31Speaker 1: Burrow looks to be a franchise. I mean, they're all
- 51:33Speaker 1: franchise quarterbacks. Joe Burrow appears to be a franchise quarterback.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Some guys are starting quarterbacks and that's okay. Right. He's
- 51:40Speaker 1: a very good starting quarterback. And I mean, The Falcons
- 51:45Speaker 1: lost that game because Falcons lose games, but they still,
- 51:47Speaker 1: good job winning, I guess.
- 51:50Speaker 2: He didn't look, they struggled. I mean, he had made
- 51:53Speaker 2: a couple of impressive throws, but yeah, I think your
- 51:56Speaker 2: diagnosis is correct. It's the tier that I would put
- 52:00Speaker 2: him in. I think it's usually a younger guy is
- 52:08Speaker 2: the brain breaker. Yeah. Because usually fans... attach themselves to
- 52:13Speaker 2: like a young, usually it's a guy on a rookie contract.
- 52:16Speaker 2: So I, yeah, I, you know, scouting, scouting a few
- 52:19Speaker 2: out there. Um, but yeah, I Broncos week one. Ooh,
- 52:26Speaker 2: did you watch any of that? I did buddy.
- 52:29Speaker 3: Ooh, I did.
- 52:35Speaker 1: It was by the way, the brain breaker very soon
- 52:38Speaker 1: will very clearly be arch.
- 52:43Speaker 2: I wonder, though, if they're getting that out of the
- 52:45Speaker 2: way now.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Some team is going to get him, though, and then
- 52:50Speaker 1: there will be an army of fans who pick it
- 52:52Speaker 1: up anew. Does he have.
- 52:54Speaker 2: Wait, can I.
- 52:55Speaker 1: Ask you that, though?
- 52:56Speaker 2: Okay, so I'm not super tapped into college football internet.
- 52:59Speaker 2: I just watch the games. I actually felt... I didn't...
- 53:05Speaker 2: But it seemed like he doesn't have that strident hive.
- 53:09Speaker 2: If anything... I actually felt like he had a lot
- 53:13Speaker 2: more haters than I expected come.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Out of the woodwork. Well, I mean, one, he plays
- 53:19Speaker 1: for Texas. And I don't think any school has more
- 53:21Speaker 1: other schools that hate them than Texas does. And that's
- 53:24Speaker 1: not a function of Texas' longstanding greatness. It's about geography.
- 53:28Speaker 1: But we start there, right? So he's playing for a longstanding,
- 53:31Speaker 1: underachieving program that a lot of people dislike. And the
- 53:36Speaker 1: not beating out Quinn Ewers thing is also a discussion
- 53:39Speaker 1: that then comes up. But the hype machine behind him
- 53:42Speaker 1: felt so artificial coming into this year. And the things
- 53:44Speaker 1: I heard people say on television, I'm like, you don't
- 53:46Speaker 1: believe this. This is impossible that you believe this.
- 53:49Speaker 2: And it did him no favors. I ended up feeling
- 53:52Speaker 2: bad for the guy. Yeah, I just feel like he
- 53:57Speaker 2: was put in a really shitty situation because of what
- 54:00Speaker 2: you're describing. But I also felt like he didn't have,
- 54:03Speaker 2: I don't know, like when we're talking about the quarterback
- 54:05Speaker 2: who breaks people's brains, they have to have a hive, right?
- 54:08Speaker 1: That is true.
- 54:09Speaker 2: They got to have a, I didn't, there's no arching on.
- 54:13Speaker 3: Right. Fair, fair.
- 54:15Speaker 1: But when he gets to the league, it'll be a
- 54:16Speaker 1: little bit different. Yeah.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Right. NFL teams will just, what, whoever they just project
- 54:21Speaker 2: quarterbacks or canvases on which people paint their psychosis. Like
- 54:24Speaker 2: this is just.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Well, also because whatever team he winds up with is
- 54:28Speaker 1: not going to have another option that perhaps you can want.
- 54:30Speaker 1: Like generally speaking, a college football program may not have
- 54:33Speaker 1: the guy ready to start right now, but you ain't
- 54:35Speaker 1: just only going to have one. You know what I mean?
- 54:37Speaker 1: like you're probably going to have somebody else. And though, though,
- 54:39Speaker 1: once you get to the league, like the Broncos need
- 54:42Speaker 1: Bo Nix to be that guy. All right. If he's
- 54:44Speaker 1: not that guy, you're kind of, you're kind of fucked
- 54:46Speaker 1: up for like two more years.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Yes. That is such a good point. The difference between
- 54:51Speaker 2: college football and the NFL. Right. Cause like if NFL
- 54:53Speaker 2: or the college football, it's like, Ooh, fans will kind
- 54:55Speaker 2: of by the end be like, all right, move it on.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Who's next. Who's using the transfer portal. You're right. With
- 54:59Speaker 2: college football. So, or with the NFL, pardon me, a
- 55:03Speaker 2: lot of this craziness around these, these, quarterbacks that we're
- 55:07Speaker 2: talking about, the polarizing guys, is driven by the fact
- 55:10Speaker 2: that the teams need him to be good. It's why
- 55:17Speaker 2: a guy like Fields and Darnold or whatever, Gino and Vegas,
- 55:21Speaker 2: I don't think those fan bases will ever do that
- 55:23Speaker 2: because they don't feel like that level of financial investment.
- 55:26Speaker 2: It's like, okay, we can move on if he's not
- 55:27Speaker 2: that good. There's a sunk cost thing that's.
- 55:32Speaker 1: Well, so Fields is an interesting example because I did
- 55:36Speaker 1: feel that there was a measure of this when he
- 55:38Speaker 1: was with Chicago. And what happened with him in Chicago,
- 55:40Speaker 1: people need to realize that the city of Chicago is
- 55:43Speaker 1: home territory for two sets of things. One of them
- 55:47Speaker 1: is Chicago professional sports. The other is the Big Ten.
- 55:50Speaker 1: And so what that means is if you live in
- 55:53Speaker 1: Chicago and you're a Big Ten fan, he either played
- 55:56Speaker 1: for Ohio State or he destroyed you. So you come
- 56:00Speaker 1: in with that optimism, and then he's the first hope
- 56:02Speaker 1: that you have. And then the moment you realize he
- 56:05Speaker 1: looked like the rest of them bums that you've seen
- 56:06Speaker 1: for the rest of the time, you go from there.
- 56:08Speaker 2: So DeFields did have the– he was breaking for the
- 56:11Speaker 2: exact reasons you described. Bears fans were like a crazy
- 56:14Speaker 2: defensive of him when he struggled early on.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Yes.
- 56:18Speaker 2: Yeah, such a good point about the college football fans. Yeah,
- 56:22Speaker 2: so the factors that have to be in place for the–
- 56:25Speaker 2: put a trademark, the quarterback who breaks people's brains– it's
- 56:28Speaker 2: gotta be young guy. It's gotta be, it's an NFL.
- 56:31Speaker 2: They have to have investment, whether he was at high
- 56:34Speaker 2: draft pick or there's a lot of money behind it.
- 56:36Speaker 2: One of those two things have to be the case. It's,
- 56:39Speaker 2: it's yeah. I guess Tebow doesn't, but that would, um,
- 56:44Speaker 2: they gotta be winning.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Yes.
- 56:46Speaker 2: But then not because of him. Yes. Um, then, and
- 56:52Speaker 2: there has, yeah, I think those are the main things.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Well, hold on. You know who used to be one
- 56:57Speaker 1: of those? Josh Allen. Yeah.
- 57:02Speaker 2: And then he just became actually who he thought he was.
- 57:07Speaker 1: He assumed the role to which he had been cast.
- 57:10Speaker 1: But the first three years, I mean, he was breaking
- 57:12Speaker 1: our brains.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:15Speaker 1: Well, they were breaking our brains. Their brains were broken,
- 57:17Speaker 1: and then it became contagious, and it broke our brains
- 57:19Speaker 1: because we was fighting, but we gave up.
- 57:22Speaker 2: I took the L early. Never looked back.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm just enjoying the ride.
- 57:28Speaker 2: The best L I've ever taken.
- 57:30Speaker 1: Yeah, the best thing, though, I just feel like it's
- 57:31Speaker 1: important for us to always make sure that people know
- 57:33Speaker 1: that we weren't there at first because I don't want
- 57:35Speaker 1: to act like, you know, I've been there with you.
- 57:38Speaker 2: He wasn't there at first either.
- 57:40Speaker 1: No, he wasn't. I always found the person most honest
- 57:43Speaker 1: about Josh Allen at every turn was Josh Allen. And
- 57:45Speaker 1: that's part of why I actually find it so endearing now.
- 57:48Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I totally, I, has there ever been a
- 57:54Speaker 2: quarterback who you thought about taking the L, but then
- 58:00Speaker 2: you were like, hold strong, hold strong, you know, hold, hold, like, don't, don't,
- 58:05Speaker 2: you know, like, and then eventually history proved you right.
- 58:11Speaker 1: Sam Darnold, 2024. I got to think about that though.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Two and a half briefly broke me.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:19Speaker 2: It wasn't, I didn't say like, oh, he is, you're right,
- 58:21Speaker 2: you guys, he's better than Herbert. Because that was always
- 58:23Speaker 2: about him and Herbert, right? That was, I mean, there
- 58:26Speaker 2: were people who were really pounding that Tua's better than
- 58:30Speaker 2: Herbert because it was the same draft and all that.
- 58:32Speaker 2: And I never did that. But there were moments where
- 58:35Speaker 2: I think I was more, I just kind of like,
- 58:39Speaker 2: I didn't take the L per se, but I rolled
- 58:41Speaker 2: over a little bit in retrospect.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Oh, Carson Wentz.
- 58:45Speaker 2: That's a good one.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Carson wentz he he made it tricky and then it
- 58:49Speaker 1: turned out to be what it was uh i imagine
- 58:52Speaker 1: somebody still holding out about kyler murray he just keep
- 58:55Speaker 1: riding along at that ambiguous purgatory of bustdom level um
- 59:00Speaker 1: somebody's going to be there with trevor lawrence.
- 59:04Speaker 2: I think that offense is actually gonna be pretty good
- 59:06Speaker 2: though watching.
- 59:07Speaker 1: Them yeah next time you're on we'll have to talk
- 59:09Speaker 1: it'll be another stage of the Travis Hunter experiment because
- 59:13Speaker 1: I don't know what anybody's doing over there.
- 59:17Speaker 2: Just play one. Just whatever.
- 59:19Speaker 1: I just don't. They're trying to reinvent the wheel. You
- 59:23Speaker 1: and I are on the same page.
- 59:25Speaker 2: Deontay, have you ever had him on? He's great. Mm-hmm.
- 59:28Speaker 1: I've not had them all good enough.
- 59:29Speaker 2: He had a comp that kind of briefly broke my
- 59:33Speaker 2: brain a little bit where he was watching Caleb and said,
- 59:35Speaker 2: Caleb has a lot of Trevor Lawrence in him. And
- 59:39Speaker 2: that made me kind of sit still for a second
- 59:42Speaker 2: with that thought in my head and think about it.
- 59:45Speaker 2: I'd never thought about those two quarterbacks, but it definitely
- 59:50Speaker 2: struck a chord with me.
- 59:52Speaker 1: I think that is a good time for me to
- 59:54Speaker 1: tell you guys that is Mina Combs. You can check
