- 1:29Speaker 2: opt than on a day like this. Today has been
- 1:31Speaker 2: the day where history has been made. And we know,
- 1:34Speaker 2: and we have known from early February that the Steelers
- 1:37Speaker 2: will make history as a designated home team for the
- 1:40Speaker 2: twenty twenty five Dublin game, but today it was official.
- 1:43Speaker 2: They'll play the Minnesota Vikings in Week four of the
- 1:47Speaker 2: season in Crook Park Sunday, September to twenty eighth. Before
- 1:51Speaker 2: we talk about that a little bit more, let's hear
- 1:53Speaker 2: from coach Tomlin on his thoughts on the matchup.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Man, we're unbelievably excited about this opportunity to play and
- 2:00Speaker 3: Dublin really for two very specific reasons. First, Man, it
- 2:04Speaker 3: is an honor and a privilege to represent the game
- 2:07Speaker 3: of American football internationally and maybe introduce it to a
- 2:11Speaker 3: new set of fans. It is a great honor to
- 2:16Speaker 3: play the game that we love and to be able
- 2:18Speaker 3: to do so on foreign soil. Number two, I smile
- 2:24Speaker 3: when I think about the late great Ambassador Rooney and
- 2:27Speaker 3: how fired up he would be about this game. I
- 2:30Speaker 3: remember when he was Ambassador to Ireland, he used to
- 2:33Speaker 3: have a Fourth of July flag football game every year,
- 2:36Speaker 3: and so I think about him. But I also just
- 2:40Speaker 3: simply think about the honor and privilege to play our
- 2:43Speaker 3: game globally.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Coach Tomblin on the Irish Sedis podcasts and a fight
- 2:50Speaker 2: Erlings on. As we get closer, on closer to September,
- 2:53Speaker 2: we can finally say that this is really really exciting
- 2:56Speaker 2: and funnily enough, the last time the Steelers played it
- 2:59Speaker 2: in Austleon was in twenty thirteen in Wembley Stadium, ironically
- 3:04Speaker 2: against the same opposition, the Minnesota Vikings. So look, there's
- 3:08Speaker 2: gonna be a lot of talk, there's gonna be a
- 3:10Speaker 2: lot of reaction to this over the next few weeks.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I as a fan first and foremost, I feel that
- 3:16Speaker 2: a lot of Steelers fans, a lot of NFL fans
- 3:18Speaker 2: in Ireland today will agree this feels like it's finally happened.
- 3:22Speaker 2: It's finally here. I know it was announced in February,
- 3:25Speaker 2: but today it really seems real for the first time.
- 3:27Speaker 2: So I'm sharing that excitement with you. Thank you for
- 3:30Speaker 2: listening here today on the podcast, We've got a great
- 3:32Speaker 2: guest today in sky Sports NFL analyst Phoebe Shacter. We're
- 3:37Speaker 2: gonna talk about about the game. We're gonna talk about
- 3:39Speaker 2: it about her career as well on the Irish Steelers Podcast. Okay,
- 3:44Speaker 2: it is obviously the biggest day, I says so far
- 3:47Speaker 2: for any Steelers fan in Ireland across Europe. At the
- 3:50Speaker 2: Steelers announced today to play a game in Dublin. We
- 3:54Speaker 2: all know that, but their opponent's going to be in
- 3:56Speaker 2: Minnesota Vikings twenty at September. And a person that has
- 3:59Speaker 2: walked to staters, analyzed staters and a lot of people
- 4:02Speaker 2: will nowhere from our screens on sky Sports, alongside coaching
- 4:06Speaker 2: on flag football among them, but a million of our things.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Probably the busiest woman I know, Phoebe sh Actor Faults.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Welcome into the Irish Theaters Podcast. How are you doing.
- 4:14Speaker 4: I'm doing great. Thank you so much for having me.
- 4:16Speaker 4: I'm so excited that the schedule release has finally happened
- 4:20Speaker 4: the excitement around this and it has not disappointed. What
- 4:24Speaker 4: an amazing group of like matchups we have and you
- 4:28Speaker 4: know everyone's been dying to find out who the Stealers
- 4:31Speaker 4: are playing, and so to have this big reveal, it's
- 4:34Speaker 4: going to be a phenomenal game.
- 4:36Speaker 2: It's great to have you on and I appreciate your
- 4:38Speaker 2: time because I know you're very very busy, but it's
- 4:40Speaker 2: it's been really cool to see and I know when
- 4:42Speaker 2: you've got a lot of the teams in Ireland and
- 4:44Speaker 2: the UK marketing WI I say, appear a lot in
- 4:46Speaker 2: sky Sports and we have seen a lot of the
- 4:48Speaker 2: staters over the last while. I'm just realizing as we
- 4:51Speaker 2: speak you've had the opportunity to be at some of
- 4:53Speaker 2: the watch parties. Indul I think you were the very
- 4:56Speaker 2: very first one. I remember how excited you were on that,
- 4:59Speaker 2: Like how did you find that? Because I think that
- 5:01Speaker 2: was like really the first of its kind in Ireland
- 5:03Speaker 2: or to the UK.
- 5:05Speaker 4: It wasn't you know. There were so many things that
- 5:08Speaker 4: I really enjoyed about it. I mean that was also
- 5:10Speaker 4: my first time going to Croke Park, which was just
- 5:14Speaker 4: phenomenal in its own right. How massive it is and historic,
- 5:18Speaker 4: but then the way that the Steelers made it feel
- 5:21Speaker 4: like you were truly at a Steelers home game. So
- 5:23Speaker 4: we had been we'd done the first game of the season,
- 5:26Speaker 4: not last season, the year before at like literally in Pittsburgh,
- 5:31Speaker 4: and so kind of understanding what a home game feels
- 5:34Speaker 4: like and then seeing how that's translated over in Dublin.
- 5:37Speaker 4: You know, from from the music that they were playing,
- 5:40Speaker 4: to the food that was served, the terrible towels, the
- 5:44Speaker 4: you know, just the black and yellow everywhere. You really
- 5:49Speaker 4: got a true sense of what it's like to be
- 5:53Speaker 4: at a home game. And I think it's really important
- 5:56Speaker 4: the thought around the details that the Steelers bring to
- 5:59Speaker 4: the tape, you know, and making it as game like
- 6:03Speaker 4: for everybody around the world, which is what makes this
- 6:06Speaker 4: game coming up this year so incredible to think about,
- 6:10Speaker 4: like how they're truly gonna make it feel like you
- 6:13Speaker 4: were in Pittsburgh.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I remember, I think we probably had that conversation back
- 6:17Speaker 2: a couple of years ago, even like when you were
- 6:19Speaker 2: walking to the restroom, like the walls had different memorabili ones,
- 6:22Speaker 2: so I thought that you were actually actually an akasher.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I'm going to just switch back even before that, just
- 6:26Speaker 2: very quickly before we talk about the news today, because
- 6:29Speaker 2: the thing is really important as well. You guys went
- 6:32Speaker 2: over to the Niners game I think it was two
- 6:33Speaker 2: seasons ago and I started the season. There wasn't a
- 6:36Speaker 2: great result for Stears fans, but you had the chance,
- 6:38Speaker 2: if I recall my great memory Phoebe, that you have
- 6:41Speaker 2: the chances to sit down with mister Rooney I think
- 6:43Speaker 2: a day or two before the game, and how did
- 6:46Speaker 2: you find that? And like did it really open your mind?
- 6:49Speaker 2: Like I know you grew up around football, but did
- 6:51Speaker 2: it open your mind more to to Pittsburgh, to the
- 6:54Speaker 2: Staters and their history as well?
- 6:56Speaker 4: You know what, I was so nervous down with mister
- 7:01Speaker 4: Rudy himself, and he has this presence about him when
- 7:06Speaker 4: you get the opportunity to talk to him, and you know,
- 7:10Speaker 4: you think about the history that they have, and you
- 7:14Speaker 4: know how much work they've done in Ireland in the US,
- 7:17Speaker 4: the way that they really again, like I want to
- 7:19Speaker 4: keep going back to that details element, but you know
- 7:22Speaker 4: you've got their own essentially like museum at the Stadium
- 7:26Speaker 4: and Acroshure, you know. And I was so fortunate to
- 7:28Speaker 4: be able to have Dan Rooney take us around and
- 7:32Speaker 4: show us and why you know, imagine Neil and I
- 7:34Speaker 4: getting this like personalized tour, looking at all the history,
- 7:38Speaker 4: the steel curtain going over, pretending we're commentators in the booth,
- 7:42Speaker 4: and you know, it was just phenomenal to have that.
- 7:46Speaker 4: And I think to have that first home game, and
- 7:48Speaker 4: I'll always remember it because I have never literally felt
- 7:53Speaker 4: anything like that kickoff because the ground was reverberating with
- 7:59Speaker 4: the nose and excitement, and you know, we have our
- 8:03Speaker 4: noise canceling headphones, but you literally could barely hear each
- 8:08Speaker 4: other speaking to each other. And then you bring out
- 8:12Speaker 4: you know, you see the terrible towels going and man,
- 8:16Speaker 4: that was just an incredible experience to be there, to
- 8:19Speaker 4: have that view and truly live that like first home game,
- 8:25Speaker 4: and the fans were relentless.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It was like like to even for people listen to
- 8:31Speaker 2: this and maybe have another chance to go to actor Sure,
- 8:33Speaker 2: I can only really repost Phoebe's thoughts here like the
- 8:38Speaker 2: tour if you walk around it, folks, if you ever
- 8:41Speaker 2: get a chance to do, if you're theaters fans, listen
- 8:43Speaker 2: to this or not give it a go, because a
- 8:45Speaker 2: game day is really special there, but what they have
- 8:47Speaker 2: built there is awesome, so definitely check it out and
- 8:49Speaker 2: check out the Chief Sachio outside as well. It's awesome.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Phoebe.
- 8:52Speaker 2: You obviously work on a number of different games in London,
- 8:57Speaker 2: in Germany and across the world really bit more so
- 9:00Speaker 2: obviously in Europe over the last few years with sky
- 9:01Speaker 2: Sports NFL. Long when that continue and when you see
- 9:06Speaker 2: the news that's came out today in regards to the
- 9:08Speaker 2: Steelers playing the Vikings at Cork Park, I know that
- 9:12Speaker 2: it was announced the Bowl week and like Wet, we
- 9:14Speaker 2: met each other on the day it was announced and
- 9:16Speaker 2: there was obviously a lot of excitement. But I had
- 9:18Speaker 2: said to my friend Mark earlier on it feels like
- 9:20Speaker 2: it's almost the closing of a chapter.
- 9:22Speaker 3: In terms of.
- 9:23Speaker 2: One, we can finally talk about the data for people
- 9:25Speaker 2: listening the twentieth September week four, and two we can
- 9:28Speaker 2: actually really look forward to what this matchup is going
- 9:31Speaker 2: to be. When you hear as the Steelers against the Vikings,
- 9:34Speaker 2: how much does that excite you? Because I think of
- 9:37Speaker 2: Kevin O'Connell's surname for a start. You got the irishman's
- 9:40Speaker 2: surname right there, like Henry Hodgson literally jumped in and
- 9:43Speaker 2: asked a question in the press conference earlier on at
- 9:45Speaker 2: that we know how exciting the Vikings can be as well,
- 9:48Speaker 2: and they had experience in going over to London, but
- 9:50Speaker 2: more so as well. Steels obviously have made some big
- 9:53Speaker 2: upgrades this season. They've brought on DK Metcalfs. So everything's
- 9:57Speaker 2: on paper and it promises in just about just under
- 10:02Speaker 2: four months now, well just over four months. Like Bob
- 10:05Speaker 2: Mole's on my side, it's gonna be something really, really special.
- 10:08Speaker 4: It's going to be incredibly special. And I think, you know,
- 10:11Speaker 4: you look at it's essentially a rematch right from twenty
- 10:14Speaker 4: thirteen that we had these two teams over playing and
- 10:17Speaker 4: that was an incredible game. Then with absolute legends of
- 10:21Speaker 4: the game, you know, Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback, Adrian Peterson,
- 10:25Speaker 4: you had a slew of incredible athletes on both sides
- 10:28Speaker 4: of the ball. And I think that's what makes these
- 10:30Speaker 4: international games so special is we have the Vikings and
- 10:34Speaker 4: the Steelers who are making history. The Steelers who have
- 10:38Speaker 4: been you know, have the longest term head coach in
- 10:41Speaker 4: terms of getting to the playoffs. I mean, he has
- 10:44Speaker 4: so many tomlinisms around him and like that true standard
- 10:48Speaker 4: is the standard and he's going to bring that no
- 10:50Speaker 4: matter where he is in the world. And people get
- 10:52Speaker 4: to watch history essentially, and like you're saying the upgrades
- 10:56Speaker 4: that that the Steelers have with Dk Metcalf, what that
- 11:00Speaker 4: offense is gonna look like, and again against a very
- 11:04Speaker 4: stout defense for the Vikings. But those first four weeks
- 11:09Speaker 4: of the season is anybody's game, and because people are
- 11:12Speaker 4: always trying to figure out their identity, you know it
- 11:15Speaker 4: ultimately is it could go either way. And I think
- 11:18Speaker 4: that anticipation and that understanding of the Steelers have such
- 11:21Speaker 4: a clear identity of what they bring to the table.
- 11:25Speaker 4: The fans get to see that, they get to be
- 11:27Speaker 4: a part of that, and they get to kind of
- 11:29Speaker 4: carry this magical moment with them, with the Roonies, with Tomlin,
- 11:34Speaker 4: with this fantastic set of athletes, and so I think
- 11:38Speaker 4: that's some of the people want to just see that
- 11:40Speaker 4: be around that, and that's why I think it's going
- 11:43Speaker 4: to make it so special.
- 11:45Speaker 2: It's gonna fly in on a stony because you're saying
- 11:47Speaker 2: out there, but it being special in Isan de night. Look,
- 11:50Speaker 2: we obviously love the league and we're involved with the
- 11:52Speaker 2: league and different aspects and stuff. But to even said
- 11:54Speaker 2: tonight that I know people will listen to this will agree.
- 11:57Speaker 2: I was watching our t news in the Republic and
- 12:00Speaker 2: Easy and lover An Ireland. The top story and the
- 12:02Speaker 2: sports news was this game being announced. So there's a big,
- 12:05Speaker 2: big excitement and they're also trying to explain it for
- 12:07Speaker 2: new fans. And that's why I wanted to end on
- 12:09Speaker 2: Phoebe just before you might get a little bull production
- 12:11Speaker 2: for yourself. I'll put you in a spot in a
- 12:12Speaker 2: few minutes. But a couple of things the Steelers have
- 12:14Speaker 2: done really really well over the last couple of years
- 12:16Speaker 2: outside of the watch parties has been getting young people
- 12:20Speaker 2: involved in football clinics flag football. I know you're very,
- 12:23Speaker 2: very passionate and you literally travel the world. You've got
- 12:26Speaker 2: your own flag podcast as well. Congrats on that. How
- 12:29Speaker 2: important do you think is it in terms of having
- 12:31Speaker 2: young girls, young boys come in especially for like you know,
- 12:35Speaker 2: the ages of eight to twelve, ten to fourteen, from
- 12:38Speaker 2: any background where it's Gaelic football, rugby, whatever, How important
- 12:41Speaker 2: is that for them to try and not just learn
- 12:44Speaker 2: the sport of flag football, but to go to clinics
- 12:46Speaker 2: and learn from experts.
- 12:48Speaker 4: You know what, there's so many great elements that the
- 12:51Speaker 4: Steelers are actually bringing to the table, because there's really
- 12:54Speaker 4: in the past two years they have truly just dove
- 12:57Speaker 4: headfirst into growing the sport the grassroots and injecting the enthusiasm, financially, equipment,
- 13:06Speaker 4: whatever that looks like. And to see how, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 4: we talk about it in all these other countries where
- 13:10Speaker 4: fandom is truly at its highest now it starts at
- 13:13Speaker 4: grassroots and so taking those amazing athletes from hurling and
- 13:18Speaker 4: Gaelic football and camogi and making sure that everyone feels
- 13:22Speaker 4: like they've got equal rights to fall in love with
- 13:24Speaker 4: the sport. I mean, I even loved the advertisement essentially
- 13:28Speaker 4: for the game from NFL. It was about young people.
- 13:32Speaker 4: It was about being cool and excited and friends getting
- 13:35Speaker 4: together and watching his sport and that kind of rivalry.
- 13:39Speaker 4: You know, we walk around these cities and we see
- 13:41Speaker 4: people wearing Steelers gear or any other NFL team, and
- 13:46Speaker 4: you're like, all right, community has already started, and now
- 13:49Speaker 4: you're starting that from a young age where you get
- 13:51Speaker 4: to be a young boy or girl who you're four
- 13:54Speaker 4: year five, you get to wear Steelers gear and now
- 13:58Speaker 4: the team's coming over here. You might even do a
- 14:02Speaker 4: community day with one of these players. I mean, the
- 14:06Speaker 4: ability of that touch point is something that I think
- 14:09Speaker 4: the NFL does a terrific job of. But I think
- 14:12Speaker 4: the Steelers have such a big effort in terms of
- 14:15Speaker 4: their community aspect and their community outreach because they understand
- 14:20Speaker 4: how much they can impact people's lives and that again,
- 14:23Speaker 4: everyone deserves the opportunity to get better, to fall in
- 14:27Speaker 4: love with a sport, and you know, we talk so
- 14:29Speaker 4: much about it within flag football, especially for girls. Forty
- 14:33Speaker 4: percent of our girls who are playing flag football have
- 14:36Speaker 4: never played another sport. So now you're getting people active
- 14:40Speaker 4: who may never even been active before or interested in sport,
- 14:43Speaker 4: and that's truly changing lives. So I mean, my hat
- 14:48Speaker 4: is off to the Steelers for all the work they've
- 14:50Speaker 4: done so far. And I hope in twenty thirty two
- 14:54Speaker 4: that maybe we'll see one of the Steelers' players playing
- 14:57Speaker 4: for Team Ireland. I think that would be an absolute
- 15:00Speaker 4: dream because they started that journey.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I love that, and I love the little Komogi reference
- 15:05Speaker 2: as well. Well done by click from me there, well done,
- 15:09Speaker 2: look no just out on that. Like I've been to
- 15:11Speaker 2: a couple of local games a lot named the teams
- 15:12Speaker 2: in AFI over the last couple of weeks and I've
- 15:16Speaker 2: seen Staelers gear. I've seen different different teams, young boys,
- 15:20Speaker 2: young girls, like from the age of four or five.
- 15:22Speaker 2: We're in different jerseys, so it's really really cool to see.
- 15:25Speaker 2: So it's going to keep growing and growing and growing
- 15:27Speaker 2: twenty at September Vikings at the Staelors designated home team
- 15:31Speaker 2: first every game in code Park Ireland, UK, Ireland TV
- 15:35Speaker 2: Channel TBC, I will send up a prayer phobe. It's
- 15:38Speaker 2: on SkySports NFL, but regardless, I just want to wish
- 15:41Speaker 2: you the very very best over the next few weeks
- 15:42Speaker 2: and months. Enjoy any downtime you might get over this period,
- 15:46Speaker 2: and before you know it, it's going to be the fourth,
- 15:50Speaker 2: fourth or fifth of September and it's all going to
- 15:52Speaker 2: get in the road of game. But here, thank you
- 15:54Speaker 2: for coming on, because I feel like we've got three
- 15:56Speaker 2: people now on from SkySports NFL. We're getting that. I
- 15:58Speaker 2: think we're at gson Bell away from greatness and appreciate
- 16:02Speaker 2: coming on on what was not just a busy death
- 16:04Speaker 2: for yourself. But I'm pretty sitting there, pretty historic there,
- 16:07Speaker 2: So thank you very much and we will chat youson.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Thank you so much and thanks for all the work
- 16:12Speaker 4: that you're doing to grow the sport in Ireland.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Irish airline air Lingus will proudly serve as the presenting
- 16:27Speaker 1: partner of Steelers Ireland twenty twenty five. Airlingus's growth in
- 16:31Speaker 1: North America continues in twenty twenty five as the airline
- 16:34Speaker 1: prepares to fly to two new US destinations, Nashville and Indianapolis,
- 16:38Speaker 1: using its new Airbus eight three twenty one excel Or aircraft.
- 16:42Speaker 1: This brings the number of transatlantic routes operated by the
- 16:45Speaker 1: airline from Dublin, Shannon and Manchester to twenty four. Steelers
- 16:49Speaker 1: fans traveling to Ireland for the Big Game can enjoy
- 16:51Speaker 1: a relaxing journey when they fly with air Lingus. Air Lingus,
- 16:55Speaker 1: You're very welcome.
