- 0:44Speaker 2: We don't go to the office.
- 0:45Speaker 3: We build it.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Where except rain and lightning. We have a view here
- 1:04Speaker 4: on thunder, and.
- 1:09Speaker 5: I know, I know, just just don't worry, just just
- 1:12Speaker 5: let me be this. This is my my Bob the
- 1:14Speaker 5: builder kid here because I am I hear I hear
- 1:18Speaker 5: you because we're in the same room, but I don't
- 1:21Speaker 5: hear you in my ears.
- 1:22Speaker 2: So that's why I was messing, I don't hear.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Oh, there we go. Yeah, now my MIC's on, no,
- 1:29Speaker 3: there we go. So my mic was and I didn't
- 1:31Speaker 3: hear myself either. Yeah, but I thought that was I was.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Like, I was like, wait a second, okay, so.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Let me start that again. Welcome inside the locker room
- 1:38Speaker 3: here at Saint Vincent College in La Trobe, and we
- 1:42Speaker 3: are high atop the fields where nothing is going on
- 1:45Speaker 3: except a lot of rain, a lot of lightning, a
- 1:47Speaker 3: lot of thunder, a lot of flags flapping in the breeze.
- 1:52Speaker 3: There's no football here. The football is over the Dunlap
- 1:54Speaker 3: Center where the players went. They were able to practice
- 1:58Speaker 3: four forty five minutes ish roughly, maybe a little more,
- 2:02Speaker 3: and then you know, they cleared the crowd out of here.
- 2:04Speaker 3: This rain and storm blew and suddenly I think it's
- 2:07Speaker 3: blowing from Pittsburgh. I was talking to some folks that
- 2:10Speaker 3: said in our Bridgeville studios that not good there, and
- 2:15Speaker 3: here it is, and it's not good here. I don't
- 2:17Speaker 3: think it's gonna last that much longer. But the players
- 2:19Speaker 3: are inside practicing. Oh my, Max is pointing to the
- 2:22Speaker 3: left and seeing the brightness in the sky moving this way. Yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 3: that's the direction, the general direction of Pittsburgh. Yeah, so
- 2:28Speaker 3: it must have already rained and thundered and lightning in
- 2:31Speaker 3: Pittsburgh and now it's here, and so that's that, so
- 2:34Speaker 3: that there's no practice today, and I wonder Max, you know,
- 2:39Speaker 3: I wanted to I did want to ask you about
- 2:40Speaker 3: this because this is a game week, and you know, frankly,
- 2:47Speaker 3: I don't know what the you know, how it's weighted
- 2:50Speaker 3: as far as how players are perceived by the coaching staff,
- 2:54Speaker 3: who are ultimately the arbiters over whether you're on the
- 2:58Speaker 3: roster or not on the roster. You know, I'm sure
- 3:01Speaker 3: OTAs count, and you know, your attendedness in meetings and
- 3:06Speaker 3: all those different things, all the building blocks you're putting
- 3:08Speaker 3: in place, Everything is taped here, and everything has gone
- 3:13Speaker 3: over in meticulous fashion by the coaching staff. Mike McCarthy's
- 3:18Speaker 3: a meticulous man, a scheduled, meticulous organized. I say meticulous,
- 3:24Speaker 3: I mean that as a compliment of course. Organized is
- 3:26Speaker 3: what I'm getting out, highly highly organized. So all these
- 3:29Speaker 3: guys are being viewed and seen, and they're going against you.
- 3:32Speaker 3: If you're a young offensive lineman. Let's say you're a tackle,
- 3:36Speaker 3: you're going against t J. Watt and Alex Highsmith and
- 3:38Speaker 3: Nick Herbig. You're going against as good as you're ever
- 3:41Speaker 3: going to go against. So there's all that stuff that's
- 3:43Speaker 3: been accumulated. Is are the games finishing school or can
- 3:49Speaker 3: you make a name or lose a name in a
- 3:52Speaker 3: preseason game.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You can't make.
- 3:54Speaker 5: And lose a name in a preseason game just because yes,
- 3:58Speaker 5: you're getting the high level education by being on the
- 4:02Speaker 5: fields out here and playing, like you said, against the
- 4:04Speaker 5: aforementioned TJ. Watte, Alice high Smith, Nick Herbert right, You're
- 4:08Speaker 5: not gonna find a finer trio in the league of
- 4:11Speaker 5: pass rushers.
- 4:12Speaker 2: You're not gonna get a better.
- 4:13Speaker 5: De tackle with the experience and the Cam Hayward right,
- 4:17Speaker 5: the raw size and ability of Derek Harmon and Ya
- 4:20Speaker 5: Black right. You're getting the master class sessions, but it
- 4:26Speaker 5: has to translate into stadiums. And if you don't play
- 4:30Speaker 5: well in stadiums, it don't matter how good you are
- 4:34Speaker 5: and how well you do in practice against said guys.
- 4:39Speaker 5: If you can't translate that experience onto the field and
- 4:42Speaker 5: have a relative uptick and performance against lesser competition, Essentially
- 4:47Speaker 5: you're saying then that means that the moment's too big
- 4:50Speaker 5: for you. When the lights get bright, I can't handle it.
- 4:53Speaker 5: I can do it here at practice, run around on
- 4:55Speaker 5: the fields where they're also not hitting your quarterback for real.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Yeah right, they're going to a point on the field
- 5:03Speaker 5: or a dummy, they're not. Aaron Rodgers is not in
- 5:07Speaker 5: a live situation there.
- 5:09Speaker 2: So if you mess up a rep, no harm, no foul.
- 5:13Speaker 5: But you get in the stadium and you you mess
- 5:16Speaker 5: up that same rep, you're picking Aaron up off the ground.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Yes, and I think the as we see another impressive
- 5:23Speaker 3: lightning strike here, I mean depressive you scary for me? Yes,
- 5:26Speaker 3: we've seen horizontally. That one was absolutely straight, vertical, a
- 5:31Speaker 3: little in the distance animal, yeah, the thunderclap. So I
- 5:36Speaker 3: think that your notion of your comparison of an education
- 5:41Speaker 3: is an apt one. So you get an education, right,
- 5:43Speaker 3: All your teachers like you. Everything's good, You get good
- 5:46Speaker 3: grades under your report cards, and then you go into
- 5:48Speaker 3: the office and you're you're not good. Well guess what
- 5:51Speaker 3: the office counts off? The other stuff stops counting after a.
- 5:54Speaker 2: While, right, yeah, exactly. Grades are nice, but paychecks are better. Yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Right, And that's essentially what it is, because this is
- 6:02Speaker 5: where you get the philosophy. You get the theory of
- 6:07Speaker 5: what you need to do, and you get a roundabout
- 6:11Speaker 5: idea about it.
- 6:12Speaker 2: But then when you go to the field.
- 6:14Speaker 5: That is your office, that is the boardroom, that is
- 6:17Speaker 5: that is the actual place where it counts. And can
- 6:21Speaker 5: I continue to wow an astound just like I did
- 6:26Speaker 5: in the classroom. That's gonna be the question the practical
- 6:28Speaker 5: application of said knowledge attained, and that's and that's where
- 6:33Speaker 5: it matters.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And a lot of guys can't do that. That's another thing.
- 6:36Speaker 5: A lot of guys are great practice players, come out
- 6:40Speaker 5: perfect in practice.
- 6:41Speaker 2: We call them Thursday all Americans.
- 6:45Speaker 5: But then when you get to the game, they freeze up.
- 6:48Speaker 5: They can't they can't understand the gravitas of the situation.
- 6:53Speaker 5: They can't perform under pressure. You know, pressure, You know
- 6:58Speaker 5: it is two ways, right, those who feel it and
- 7:02Speaker 5: those who.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Apply it right, right, that is what pressure is. Right.
- 7:05Speaker 5: It can burst pipes or make diamonds. Same thing here.
- 7:10Speaker 5: If there's no real pressure, you try and simulate the
- 7:13Speaker 5: pressure out here. In practice, you'll try to give a
- 7:15Speaker 5: situation and have everybody counting on you. But at the
- 7:18Speaker 5: end of the day, quarterbacks not getting killed, running backs
- 7:21Speaker 5: not getting blown up, it doesn't really have the same
- 7:25Speaker 5: measure because you know that there's a fail safe in place.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that. I think. I'm wondering now, if
- 7:33Speaker 3: you know, in hearing your explanation, whether is there a
- 7:37Speaker 3: little grace for you in maybe week one that allows
- 7:43Speaker 3: you to get another opportunity in week two or week three.
- 7:46Speaker 3: I think anybody who's played a sport has felt that
- 7:52Speaker 3: sport speed up on them to some degree. Most of
- 7:55Speaker 3: us I felt that. And when you're done, and you know,
- 7:59Speaker 3: you're you're getting in your car, or you're driving home,
- 8:02Speaker 3: or you're walking home after if it's in high school
- 8:05Speaker 3: or whatever, and you're thinking, boy, I wish I'd done this,
- 8:08Speaker 3: but I couldn't think of that at the time, and
- 8:10Speaker 3: they came too fast. I know, these guys that played
- 8:12Speaker 3: high school, they played college in many cases, maybe they
- 8:15Speaker 3: played professionally, they played the UFL or whatever. This is different.
- 8:18Speaker 3: This is the NFL. So I do wonder, you know,
- 8:22Speaker 3: I'm sure there's gonna be some players that are gonna
- 8:24Speaker 3: be leaving that field on Thursday night and thinking, boy,
- 8:28Speaker 3: I really hope I get another chance, because that moved
- 8:31Speaker 3: way faster for me. So that'll be interesting. But this
- 8:36Speaker 3: is the even if that exists, this is still and
- 8:40Speaker 3: what also exists is the possibility you'll be gone, you
- 8:42Speaker 3: won't be on the roster by Friday. That that the
- 8:45Speaker 3: you know, the the the scouts and everybody are already
- 8:48Speaker 3: talking about you. And it's not in a good way.
- 8:51Speaker 3: He don't want to be putting that out there, but
- 8:54Speaker 3: it's you know, listen, this is the first big step.
- 8:57Speaker 3: This is your Like you said, you've got that degree,
- 9:00Speaker 3: it's in your back pocket. Now you've got to prove
- 9:04Speaker 3: you're worthy of whatever job it is that you're asked
- 9:06Speaker 3: to do.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Well you are.
- 9:07Speaker 5: And you know, the good thing is the NFL tried
- 9:10Speaker 5: to change you know, they've changed the rules to where
- 9:12Speaker 5: there's only one huge cut, but like you said, mini
- 9:15Speaker 5: cuts can happen along the way.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean we've we've seen we've seen roster
- 9:19Speaker 3: movies be made over the last several days. That's what
- 9:21Speaker 3: I'm saying. You could be a roster move.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Yeah, you could be a roster move as opposed to
- 9:25Speaker 5: just the cuts. And I think that's where guys can't
- 9:29Speaker 5: go into a false sense of complacency. But you know,
- 9:33Speaker 5: like you said, one game is not going to determine
- 9:36Speaker 5: you know, your outcome per se, unless it's just really bad.
- 9:39Speaker 5: But you're going to get an opportunity, and they want
- 9:43Speaker 5: to see the growth from from game one to game two,
- 9:46Speaker 5: from game two to game three. They want to get
- 9:49Speaker 5: a full focus view of what your potential is. Everybody
- 9:52Speaker 5: can have a bad game, but if you string bad
- 9:55Speaker 5: games together, that's an issue, right if you have one
- 9:58Speaker 5: bad game as a hiccup, And so they want to
- 10:01Speaker 5: see what that looks like, especially for your young rookies, right,
- 10:03Speaker 5: and rookies, this is their first time stepping into a
- 10:05Speaker 5: stadium and playing grown man football, so they know there's
- 10:10Speaker 5: going to be an adjustment or a learning curve in there.
- 10:12Speaker 5: But you don't want to see to where, like you said,
- 10:14Speaker 5: it's too fast, they can't pick it up, or they
- 10:18Speaker 5: just look stuck at the gates. They never get out
- 10:20Speaker 5: of the starting blocks to even continue in the race.
- 10:23Speaker 5: And that's what we want to see. We don't want
- 10:26Speaker 5: to see that paralysis in the game, especially when you're
- 10:29Speaker 5: completely different on the practice field, Like you want to
- 10:33Speaker 5: see that demeanor transport into the stadium. And yes, you
- 10:37Speaker 5: can make mistakes, but you don't dwell on them.
- 10:40Speaker 2: You don't allow it to compromise you for the.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Next play, and it doesn't belittle or show that anxiety
- 10:49Speaker 5: You want to see how they handle pressure and anxiety
- 10:52Speaker 5: and stress, and can they manifest that into productive play,
- 10:57Speaker 5: And can they also compartmentalize when something bad will happen,
- 11:01Speaker 5: not if will happen. How do you adjust to that adversity.
- 11:06Speaker 5: There also seem to be players that just for whatever reason,
- 11:10Speaker 5: and they're the kind of players that drive coaches crazy
- 11:14Speaker 5: in some ways. The person who's not very good at
- 11:18Speaker 5: practice or just okay at practice.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Who gets better. Max is slowly raising his hand for
- 11:24Speaker 3: those of you listening on radio, So Max, you're guilty
- 11:27Speaker 3: of that gamer. So look better a gamer than a
- 11:32Speaker 3: Thursday practice All American. But the Thursday practice All American
- 11:36Speaker 3: is at least going to get the opportunity. The quote
- 11:39Speaker 3: unquote gamer may never get the opportunity to show what
- 11:42Speaker 3: they can do in the game because they're not going
- 11:43Speaker 3: to practice. They rely on that adrenaline. Think about other sports.
- 11:46Speaker 3: You know, Baseball comes to mind. You know, you're bringing
- 11:49Speaker 3: a closer because he hasn't pitched in three games. You
- 11:51Speaker 3: need to get him some work. It's the it's the
- 11:54Speaker 3: ninth inning and you're losing eleven nothing. Chances are that
- 11:56Speaker 3: guy's gonna give up four runs, right, I mean just
- 11:58Speaker 3: because yeah, there's no adrenaline. He's not there. He's a gamer.
- 12:03Speaker 2: So the stadium is probably empty at that part.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Well, right, you're hearing that annoying WU go out around
- 12:09Speaker 3: the stadium. Maybe that'll throw you off. But so so
- 12:13Speaker 3: you you were you were a gamer, then you're a
- 12:15Speaker 3: guy who you were shut up for the games more
- 12:17Speaker 3: than practice.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Games.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Game film look way different than practice film, and it was.
- 12:23Speaker 2: And for me, you know, it's not that I didn't
- 12:26Speaker 2: like practice. I didn't love for it.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Like there was elements of practice I really enjoyed, right, yes,
- 12:30Speaker 5: but it was certain monotonies in the practice that just
- 12:34Speaker 5: didn't didn't give me the juice that I needed.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And so you know that's why they were like, you know, guy,
- 12:40Speaker 2: you're so bad.
- 12:41Speaker 5: And I would be slowing my steps on some of
- 12:43Speaker 5: the stuff and some of the team period.
- 12:45Speaker 2: And it's also because.
- 12:47Speaker 5: I knew I gave everything on the field on Sunday,
- 12:50Speaker 5: so that Wednesday practice, I'm just getting back functional movement wise,
- 12:59Speaker 5: and then Thursday was always better, and then Friday's a walkthrough.
- 13:02Speaker 5: So really the bulk of our install and everything is
- 13:04Speaker 5: on Wednesday, and on that day made me not look
- 13:07Speaker 5: like I'm a practice player, right, you know they were
- 13:10Speaker 5: thinking I'm Alan iverson all of a sudden.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Okay, right, we talk about.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Practice, but it was in formative. But yet in the
- 13:18Speaker 5: classroom I knew everything, Okay. So it came to they
- 13:23Speaker 5: knew that I knew what I needed to do.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I know what I was doing.
- 13:27Speaker 5: I might not looked as great doing it on that Wednesday,
- 13:30Speaker 5: and they're like, oh okay, Thursday's looking better.
- 13:33Speaker 2: And then games I was. I was back. I was
- 13:35Speaker 2: back to normal. So it was just for me. It
- 13:37Speaker 2: was a ramp up period to get to the game. Right.
- 13:40Speaker 3: So like you said on.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Film, if I watched my practice film, yeah, it's gonna
- 13:44Speaker 5: suck on Wednesday Thursday, like okay, all right, and then Friday,
- 13:48Speaker 5: everybody's moving around fast, all.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Things equal, boob, We're good. Saturday walkthrough.
- 13:53Speaker 5: I made my biggest hay in the classroom and on
- 13:56Speaker 5: the game field.
- 13:57Speaker 3: How are you in camp? And OTA's your first year was?
- 14:00Speaker 3: It was Bill Cara Thick and we drafted this guy.
- 14:02Speaker 2: In what round?
- 14:03Speaker 3: I mean, were you not showing up then until the
- 14:06Speaker 3: game started?
- 14:07Speaker 5: No, And it was a different it was a different
- 14:09Speaker 5: league back then, and four and I had all venters.
- 14:12Speaker 2: I was I was literally one.
- 14:13Speaker 5: It was like four of us rookies in here with
- 14:15Speaker 5: all these other veteran guys, and so they had their
- 14:19Speaker 5: starting lineup, so it was like, well, where's this guy
- 14:22Speaker 5: gonna fit? Is he left tackle? Is your right tackle?
- 14:24Speaker 5: I was doing swing duty. But I made my name
- 14:26Speaker 5: in camp. May my name camp one on ones? And
- 14:29Speaker 5: then you know, run game was heavy back then, with
- 14:31Speaker 5: your own bets and douce staleys.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Now did that did that feel for a young guy?
- 14:35Speaker 3: That must have felt like game like intensity because you
- 14:38Speaker 3: knew what you had to do.
- 14:40Speaker 2: It got your tens and it was full pads every day. Yeah.
- 14:42Speaker 2: So there was no hiding, right.
- 14:44Speaker 5: They knew right out the gates who were the wolves
- 14:47Speaker 5: and who were the sheep, right, and you had to
- 14:50Speaker 5: go out there and prove yourself.
- 14:51Speaker 3: And I'm doing it.
- 14:51Speaker 2: You know.
- 14:52Speaker 5: Joey Porter beat the brakes off me in one on
- 14:55Speaker 5: one pass rush, right, you know, but that was that
- 14:58Speaker 5: was Joey Porter, right, I mean that's the dude coming
- 14:59Speaker 5: off Pro Bowl, angry guy, sack leader, and so you know,
- 15:05Speaker 5: I really, you know, got an education going against like
- 15:07Speaker 5: Keemo von Ohoffen and a young Aaron Smith. You know,
- 15:11Speaker 5: we fought and we battled in practice. And then Alonzo Jackson,
- 15:16Speaker 5: who's a draft pick the year before. You know, me
- 15:19Speaker 5: and Zo, Me and Zoe had battles because I played
- 15:21Speaker 5: him at FSU, so I played against though, so there
- 15:24Speaker 5: was a familiarity. And then when I started to get
- 15:26Speaker 5: the best of their second round draft pick from a
- 15:28Speaker 5: year ago, Oh, turning heads right, you know.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Clark Hagen's I got. I caught Clark a couple of times.
- 15:34Speaker 5: I felt good about myself because I was like, oh, yeah, okay,
- 15:36Speaker 5: I come on, come on, Clark, you know, but definitely
- 15:39Speaker 5: didn't want to go back over the left. I was like,
- 15:42Speaker 5: give me any other backup, a young James. I would
- 15:45Speaker 5: take a young James Harrison over Joey Porter in his prime.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Right in high school ball.
- 15:49Speaker 3: After you're tying your shoe, No, hang on, you you
- 15:51Speaker 3: on my shoes on tied? Man? You take no?
- 15:55Speaker 2: No, I'm catch up.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Go ahead. If you played high school football, you know
- 15:57Speaker 3: what I'm talking about. Yeah, there's one or two monsters
- 16:00Speaker 3: on the team.
- 16:00Speaker 2: He wanted no part of Oklahoma drills. You're right, na,
- 16:03Speaker 2: let me just fall back to the guys.
- 16:05Speaker 3: One fifty four man talk about two great teammates to
- 16:08Speaker 3: Aaron Smith and Keemo Van Ohoffen, and you guys are
- 16:10Speaker 3: all battling. Kemo is a veteran at that point, right,
- 16:13Speaker 3: but Aaron trying to make a name for himself too.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Aaron, Aaron is trying to make a name for himself,
- 16:17Speaker 5: you know, because he came from northern Colorado, right, a
- 16:19Speaker 5: little small school, but was so technically sound, and you know,
- 16:25Speaker 5: to have to get it to get a stalemate against
- 16:27Speaker 5: him and to get get that type of quote unquote victory.
- 16:31Speaker 5: That was a huge that turned heads and that allowed
- 16:33Speaker 5: me the opportunity, you know, and then I'm battling with
- 16:36Speaker 5: like Barrett Brooks, Oliver Ross, Marvel Smith. We're all in
- 16:40Speaker 5: that tackle room together trying trying to see, hey, how's
- 16:44Speaker 5: this gonna how's this.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Going to uh going to pan out?
- 16:46Speaker 5: And luckily, you know, by the end of it, you know,
- 16:49Speaker 5: we had four preseason games, and that fourth preseason game
- 16:52Speaker 5: down in Carolina was where I had to play a
- 16:55Speaker 5: majority of that game, and it did the moment didn't
- 16:57Speaker 5: feel too big, and it's like, okay, all right, this okay,
- 17:00Speaker 5: this young guy gets it.
- 17:01Speaker 2: I just remember sitting at my aunt's house.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Over in Greensburg and waiting for the final cuts whether
- 17:07Speaker 5: I made the team or not.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Did you really think you might not make the team?
- 17:10Speaker 2: Yeah? Because you know what's funny.
- 17:11Speaker 5: After I got drafted, I started looking at like, okay,
- 17:15Speaker 5: historically do they cut second and third round?
- 17:18Speaker 3: Like I was trying to figure out, like, what's the cutoff?
- 17:20Speaker 3: Not afraid to, by the way, yeah, not afraid to.
- 17:23Speaker 3: I'll get your attention.
- 17:24Speaker 5: So and I turned specifically in ninety nine, Chris Ferris Okay, yep,
- 17:29Speaker 5: Chris Ferris got cut in training camp, so I'm like,
- 17:33Speaker 5: holy crap.
- 17:34Speaker 2: And also here let me back up.
- 17:36Speaker 5: Okay, during training camp because we didn't have a fourth
- 17:39Speaker 5: round pick, I was a third round pick.
- 17:41Speaker 2: So the next pick was a fifth round pick. NATHANIELA.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Dbie was my roommate here at camp. The thing, nathaniel
- 17:49Speaker 2: A dbi got.
- 17:49Speaker 5: Cut in first cuts because we had three cuts back then,
- 17:53Speaker 5: so I didn't have a roommate for a majority of
- 17:55Speaker 5: camp up here because my roommate got cut.
- 17:58Speaker 2: That was a draft pick, right, So That's where I'm like, whoa, No,
- 18:02Speaker 2: all bets are off.
- 18:03Speaker 5: And then a part of that, we called him three
- 18:04Speaker 5: six mafia because we had three six round picks, but
- 18:08Speaker 5: two of those guys got you know, one of those
- 18:10Speaker 5: guys got cut. And so I'm sitting there, I'm like, oh, man, shoot,
- 18:13Speaker 5: I'm like, so yeah, So I definitely didn't have any
- 18:17Speaker 5: mindset that I had not arrived. I wasn't Ben Roethlisberger, right,
- 18:21Speaker 5: it wasn't Ricardo Cokeley. I'm like, man, I could get
- 18:24Speaker 5: cut if I don't before, because this room is and
- 18:26Speaker 5: also this room is good. There's a deep room. Like
- 18:30Speaker 5: when you think of Jeff Hardings at center, Chuck Ya
- 18:33Speaker 5: Kobe's his backup left guard, you have Island Fanica left tackle.
- 18:37Speaker 5: You have Marvel Smith right guard. You have Kendall Simmons,
- 18:40Speaker 5: and then Kendall Kendall's is injured. Then Kedrick Vince insert
- 18:46Speaker 5: Kedrick Vincent there, Oliver Ross had been in the league
- 18:49Speaker 5: seven years at that point. Then you have Barrett Brooks
- 18:51Speaker 5: behind him. So it's like, I'm like, man, I'm like,
- 18:56Speaker 5: where am I going to fit in here on this team?
- 18:59Speaker 5: And then you and you're thinking I got drafted In
- 19:01Speaker 5: the third bow Lacey Drew Taylor, Josh Parrish also came
- 19:06Speaker 5: in offensive lineman, and then Matt Cranchik was also another
- 19:09Speaker 5: the sixth rounders, Eric Woods the seventh round defensive tackle,
- 19:14Speaker 5: and then Willie Parker is an undrafted free agent here
- 19:17Speaker 5: on the squad. So that's our draft class. And it's like, man, well,
- 19:22Speaker 5: I've got all these vests. Where do I fit in,
- 19:24Speaker 5: you know, in this? So I'm scrapping trying to make
- 19:28Speaker 5: sure that I make a name for it and I
- 19:29Speaker 5: stand out. And then I got Russ Grimm's my offensive
- 19:31Speaker 5: line coach.
- 19:32Speaker 2: That's kind of cool, you know.
- 19:33Speaker 5: So it's like you're looking at Russ, and Russ is like, listen,
- 19:36Speaker 5: I'm not going to tell you how to do it,
- 19:37Speaker 5: but I'm darn you're going to make sure that you
- 19:40Speaker 5: know what to do and where to be. That's my
- 19:42Speaker 5: job as your coach. What you did physically is what
- 19:45Speaker 5: got you here is what's going to keep you here.
- 19:48Speaker 5: My job is to make sure you know how to
- 19:49Speaker 5: do it and when to do it and what to do.
- 19:53Speaker 5: And so I was like, all right, well, no, not
- 19:55Speaker 5: the how, but you know you're going to figure out
- 19:58Speaker 5: your own style. I'm not here to change your style play.
- 20:01Speaker 5: I'm just here to make sure that you do it
- 20:03Speaker 5: under the construct of the team. Play from play to play,
- 20:05Speaker 5: and we were good at that. We knew how to
- 20:06Speaker 5: reach safeties, defenses, We knew how to call and make
- 20:10Speaker 5: the adjustments.
- 20:11Speaker 2: And go out there and know what to do is
- 20:14Speaker 2: how you do it. That's all on you.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Way over different break, but fun conversation here with Max Starks.
- 20:20Speaker 3: We're going to continue as we look forward to Thursday
- 20:22Speaker 3: night's game. Max and I'll be on the call for
- 20:25Speaker 3: that game Thursday night against the Packers. More to come

- 21:20Speaker 3: Man, it looks like most of the rain is gone now.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Max is again lightening up on the horizon here as
- 21:26Speaker 3: at Saint Vincent College, the Dunlop Center, I believe the
- 21:30Speaker 3: Dunlop Center is getting used for the first time.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Right for the first time they've gone for practice.
- 21:34Speaker 3: A beautiful facility.
- 21:35Speaker 5: Oh, beautiful indoor there, full field inside, and some other
- 21:41Speaker 5: athletic and minutes. I think there's like a like a
- 21:42Speaker 5: basketball court in there too, and some other stuff. But
- 21:45Speaker 5: beautiful indoor facility got built just adjacent on the other
- 21:48Speaker 5: side of the access road here that runs behind the
- 21:52Speaker 5: uh let's say, I guess along behind our fields, but
- 21:56Speaker 5: alongside the turf field if you have ever been to
- 21:58Speaker 5: Saint Vincent's and right up the road across from the dorms.
- 22:01Speaker 2: So beautiful facility. First time they're utilizing it for practice purpose.
- 22:05Speaker 5: They did their mobility session day one, the preconditioning type
- 22:10Speaker 5: of testing.
- 22:11Speaker 2: They did that in there for the first day.
- 22:12Speaker 5: But then everything else has been out here on the
- 22:14Speaker 5: fields except for Saturday night lights at Latrobe Memorial and
- 22:19Speaker 5: now the dun Lap Center. So so this was the
- 22:21Speaker 5: reason why this was put there so you could still
- 22:25Speaker 5: get your full work. The gymnasium, which is what we
- 22:28Speaker 5: used to use back in the day, is a nice facility,
- 22:31Speaker 5: but it's.
- 22:32Speaker 2: More walk through.
- 22:32Speaker 5: At that point, you're not really getting the full on
- 22:36Speaker 5: like physicality. Whereas you go to a turf field indoors,
- 22:39Speaker 5: you can still get it. And for these guys today,
- 22:41Speaker 5: I think that was very important because you're doing end
- 22:44Speaker 5: of game scenarios. You're getting under pressure situations to get
- 22:47Speaker 5: these young guys ready for the end of game, you know,
- 22:49Speaker 5: and so that means Will Howard Drew Aller, your second
- 22:53Speaker 5: and third team offensive line. A lot of rookies in
- 22:55Speaker 5: there that are getting their first opportunity. They've got to
- 22:59Speaker 5: make sure that they're day to rock and roll and
- 23:01Speaker 5: that you know, they're not missing an important key day
- 23:05Speaker 5: because this is one of two last days before you
- 23:07Speaker 5: actually go play the game with a physical practice where
- 23:11Speaker 5: you have pads on and everything else.
- 23:13Speaker 2: So very important to get that.
- 23:15Speaker 5: They got the work in and then they got shuttled
- 23:17Speaker 5: with the buses afterwards after they left the facility. So
- 23:21Speaker 5: very important workday that they that they got in today.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's interesting again to see the camps just
- 23:28Speaker 3: being run differently, you know, just different than what we've
- 23:31Speaker 3: seen over the last almost two decades of Mike Tomlin
- 23:33Speaker 3: being the head coach. It's just a different field, different vibe.
- 23:36Speaker 3: I'm not going to say different energy level, it's just different. Yeah,
- 23:39Speaker 3: I think I think different is the keyword, right. You
- 23:42Speaker 3: know it's a new era, you know, it's a new regime,
- 23:45Speaker 3: but new things are available to them as well, Like that.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Dune lap center was not available.
- 23:48Speaker 5: I imagine Mike Tomlin practice would have been a lot
- 23:50Speaker 5: different had he had access to an indoor field. Like
- 23:53Speaker 5: I remember at one point we had to like shuttle
- 23:55Speaker 5: the guys last year to I.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Think the Jim at Latrobe High School to do practice. Wow.
- 24:00Speaker 5: So that's just how this evolution is. And like you said,
- 24:04Speaker 5: the earlier practice time trying to avoid what happened today
- 24:08Speaker 5: normally happens later.
- 24:09Speaker 2: In the day. So you're trying to read the farmer
- 24:11Speaker 2: Farmer's almanac.
- 24:12Speaker 5: Trying to figure out what's the best time to a practice. Well,
- 24:16Speaker 5: when it hits at noon, it doesn't matter. At one
- 24:19Speaker 5: o'clock practice versus eleven, day of practice is right dead
- 24:22Speaker 5: smack in the middle of anything getting done because if
- 24:25Speaker 5: you go on this field now after it's rained like this,
- 24:28Speaker 5: higher us for injury, guys slipping around, So you would
- 24:31Speaker 5: have missed that opportunity in general. But at least at eleven,
- 24:35Speaker 5: you know, it came out. They got the first half
- 24:37Speaker 5: of practice, forty five minutes of practice, and I think
- 24:39Speaker 5: today was a.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Two hour and twenty minute practice. Today was what was scheduled.
- 24:44Speaker 5: So you got at least the first forty minutes of
- 24:46Speaker 5: that and then you adjusted and went to an indoor
- 24:47Speaker 5: where you could still do quality work.
- 24:50Speaker 3: So I wanted to ask you. We talked about this
- 24:53Speaker 3: from Mike McCarthy's perspective earlier in the training camp. Something
- 24:57Speaker 3: you said last segment, maybe me think about this. But
- 25:02Speaker 3: if you are Mike McCarthy coming in right, and we
- 25:05Speaker 3: talked about this, he knows how to run a camp.
- 25:07Speaker 3: He knows what he wants to do, and it's clear
- 25:09Speaker 3: from ota is till now how he wants things and
- 25:12Speaker 3: why he does certain things. There's always a reason, and
- 25:17Speaker 3: so there's a lot of a lot of this. I think,
- 25:19Speaker 3: you know, we organize, we used all that stuff. I
- 25:22Speaker 3: want to look at this now from the player's perspective,
- 25:24Speaker 3: especially the holdovers. You know. I would imagine the veteran
- 25:29Speaker 3: players who are on this team and are looking to Hey, TJ.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Watt's looking for his first playoff win. You know, Cam
- 25:37Speaker 3: Hayward is looking to get to the promised Land as
- 25:39Speaker 3: far as in the postseason and making a deep run
- 25:42Speaker 3: in the postseason. I would imagine that a guy with
- 25:46Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy's resume. The players are aware of that, they
- 25:50Speaker 3: know that, and that's going to catch their attention in
- 25:52Speaker 3: a positive way. That We're not going to get a
- 25:55Speaker 3: coach we don't know anything about who may or may
- 25:57Speaker 3: not be successful in the NFL level because he doesn't
- 26:01Speaker 3: have any track worker to being successful in the NFL level.
- 26:03Speaker 3: We're gonna get a guy who, by the way, beat
- 26:05Speaker 3: the Steelers in the Super Bowl and has won a
- 26:07Speaker 3: championship and has coached, as you mentioned in a previous show,
- 26:12Speaker 3: to the biggest franchises in the NFL as far as prestige,
- 26:16Speaker 3: and that's the Packers and the Cowboys street cred.
- 26:21Speaker 2: You know, it gives him some cachet. And that's exactly
- 26:24Speaker 2: what it's about.
- 26:25Speaker 5: Like you bring a known commodity in here, and it's
- 26:29Speaker 5: the same thing if I hand you a pepsi, since
- 26:32Speaker 5: we have a pepsi up here. If I hand you
- 26:34Speaker 5: a Pepsi max now handing me PEPs for those listeners.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Or I hand you big k kola, which one are
- 26:38Speaker 2: you gonna drink? Right?
- 26:39Speaker 3: Yes, right, yep.
- 26:41Speaker 2: That's just it's a brand recognition thing. So you're automatically gonna.
- 26:45Speaker 5: Trust that off the bat because because it passed the
- 26:48Speaker 5: eye test, the resume is there, right, he was a
- 26:51Speaker 5: head coach of the Green Bay Packers for thirteen years
- 26:54Speaker 5: and oh, by the way, he beat this very team
- 26:57Speaker 5: in Super Bowl forty five with that very Yes, that's right,
- 27:01Speaker 5: so it's like.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Oh, I know he is.
- 27:02Speaker 5: And then by the way, he goes down to Dallas
- 27:05Speaker 5: has a successful you know, stint there. Of course they
- 27:08Speaker 5: didn't have the over arching success, they didn't have a
- 27:10Speaker 5: Super Bowl, but they all had winning seasons when he
- 27:13Speaker 5: was down there in Dallas, So you know, he comes
- 27:16Speaker 5: from very recognizable And we were talking about this off
- 27:20Speaker 5: air about what.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Gets shown on TV. Right, green Bay Packers get shown
- 27:25Speaker 2: on TV.
- 27:26Speaker 5: Right, Dallas Cowboys are even when they suck, are still
- 27:29Speaker 5: on TV. So you come from these very recognizable brands
- 27:34Speaker 5: and you've had success and now you come here, and
- 27:38Speaker 5: you also hear the passion that he speaks about being
- 27:41Speaker 5: the head coach of this team and what has meant
- 27:43Speaker 5: to him in his life in general.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Yeah, these kids will be running through walls for him.
- 27:49Speaker 3: So I did want to ask you this because and
- 27:52Speaker 3: I did ask you this. We were talking about this
- 27:53Speaker 3: during the break. So whether you were an NFL fan,
- 27:58Speaker 3: because I think a lot of people, uh players in
- 28:02Speaker 3: the South, you know, if you grew up in Alabama
- 28:06Speaker 3: or if you grew up in Mississippi, there are you
- 28:09Speaker 3: know a lot of these SEC schools South Carolina SEC
- 28:13Speaker 3: country that is your pro team. Yeah, you know exactly.
- 28:17Speaker 3: There are a lot of people in Louisiana that are
- 28:19Speaker 3: much bigger LSU fans than they are.
- 28:21Speaker 2: New Orleans Saints fans.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Correct, And I think that's true all throughout the South,
- 28:26Speaker 3: the Falcons after following, But University of George is awfully
- 28:29Speaker 3: big down there, and then you've got Georgia Tech kind
- 28:31Speaker 3: of horning in there too. But yeah, you know, just
- 28:34Speaker 3: that is like those are the pro teams. University of
- 28:36Speaker 3: Alabama is like the pro team. Of course they're not
- 28:38Speaker 3: getting BAI too, Yeah, but that is the pro team. Yes,
- 28:43Speaker 3: in in Alabama. So I wonder if some guys grew
- 28:47Speaker 3: up being more SEC fans than NFL fans. You ever
- 28:50Speaker 3: run across that are most guys pretty much NFL fans.
- 28:54Speaker 5: So it's a good it's a funny mix because they
- 28:58Speaker 5: are staunch SEC and the SEC is a different it's
- 29:01Speaker 5: a different breeding.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Of itself, right they are.
- 29:04Speaker 5: They are absolute nuts for their schools. But because they're
- 29:09Speaker 5: nuts of their schools, they follow the players beyond. So
- 29:14Speaker 5: if you love Amari Cooper, you know when he was
- 29:17Speaker 5: at Alabama, guess what, You're gonna follow Amari Cooper in
- 29:20Speaker 5: his career. You're not gonna tune into every game, but
- 29:23Speaker 5: when the games come on TV, you're gonna watch him, right,
- 29:26Speaker 5: because there's an affiliation with him. He's a but hey,
- 29:30Speaker 5: roll tied out there on the NFL field, right, You're
- 29:33Speaker 5: gonna you're gonna see that. And to say with me,
- 29:36Speaker 5: like a lot of people were like, Max, man, I
- 29:38Speaker 5: followed your career. When I go back and do Florida stuff,
- 29:41Speaker 5: Max Man, I followed your career. Man, I was not
- 29:42Speaker 5: a Steeler fan until you went on the team. And
- 29:45Speaker 5: then you guys got Marquis Pouncey and Chris Rainey, so
- 29:48Speaker 5: I had to watch it. I've been a Steelers fan
- 29:50Speaker 5: ever since, so you do get that kind of affiliation
- 29:53Speaker 5: by assimilation, right, and people follow those guys when you're right,
- 29:57Speaker 5: the first love is going to be the college team.
- 30:00Speaker 5: They're gonna look UGA alumni is go Dogs everywhere. I mean, heck,
- 30:04Speaker 5: even when we were up here at camp, one guy
- 30:06Speaker 5: had a go Dog. He had a full University of
- 30:08Speaker 5: Georgia outfit on coming to watch the Steelers practice. That
- 30:11Speaker 5: just lets you know where it's at right now, right
- 30:13Speaker 5: because Roderick Jones Darnell Washington are on this team and
- 30:17Speaker 5: they probably loved them back at Georgia and wanted to
- 30:20Speaker 5: follow their careers from there. So it is one of
- 30:23Speaker 5: those funny things. But yeah, growing up, I mean, you know,
- 30:25Speaker 5: in the eighties and nineties, right, it was just network television.
- 30:28Speaker 5: So I lived in Orlando. I don't have an set
- 30:31Speaker 5: team that's nearby. I had the UCF right, the Golden
- 30:34Speaker 5: Knights was our college team. So I just watched the
- 30:39Speaker 5: league growing up, and I just whoever came on TV.
- 30:42Speaker 5: So we had that conversation right catching all like John
- 30:45Speaker 5: Madden and Pat summerw because.
- 30:47Speaker 2: They were they were the league. They were the national guys.
- 30:49Speaker 5: So I watched Giants and watched Lawrence Taylor and his career.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Loved LT. We talked about that, we both love LT.
- 30:57Speaker 5: I watched the Cowboys, loved him at Smith because he
- 30:59Speaker 5: was from Florida, you know, And I was like, okay,
- 31:02Speaker 5: and Michael Irving and Dion's from Florida as well. Michael
- 31:05Speaker 5: Irving's from Florida. Now I'm seeing guys that are from
- 31:08Speaker 5: my home state. So yes, I watched the players. I
- 31:11Speaker 5: didn't have a team affiliation. Then I watched a lot
- 31:13Speaker 5: of Dolphins as well, but you watched who was on
- 31:16Speaker 5: national TV. And I saw the Steelers, but I didn't
- 31:18Speaker 5: know any I didn't know any Florida guys. Steelers right
- 31:21Speaker 5: in my head.
- 31:22Speaker 2: So it's just about where you are recently and how
- 31:26Speaker 2: you grow up.
- 31:26Speaker 5: But I think a lot of guys in that footprint,
- 31:29Speaker 5: which is now a lot larger than when I played
- 31:31Speaker 5: in SEC, because now you have your compass the state
- 31:35Speaker 5: of Texas, right, which which usually that which that used
- 31:38Speaker 5: to be the cutoff, right because we didn't have any
- 31:41Speaker 5: Texas teams. Now we got Texas and Texas A and
- 31:43Speaker 5: M that are now in the sec. We didn't have Oklahoma.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Oklahoma's now in there. Missouri, we didn't have Missouri. Missouri
- 31:48Speaker 5: is now in it. It went Tennessee to Mississippi and
- 31:53Speaker 5: and and and uh and Louisiana. Right, that was kind
- 31:57Speaker 5: of it, and you kind of met there. And then
- 31:59Speaker 5: you had Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina. And even
- 32:04Speaker 5: though we didn't have a team in North Carolina, we
- 32:07Speaker 5: still pulled North Carolina because of Tennessee.
- 32:09Speaker 2: That's right.
- 32:10Speaker 5: You're surrounded. Yeah, you're surrounded. You're surrounded by it. So
- 32:12Speaker 5: that was our footprint. So yeah, that was that was
- 32:15Speaker 5: the main one.
- 32:15Speaker 3: So that brought me to the question about somebody that
- 32:17Speaker 3: Max played for, but also somebody that these current Steelers
- 32:21Speaker 3: are playing for, and whether that also gives a little
- 32:24Speaker 3: street cred to those coaches, which we're going to talk
- 32:26Speaker 3: about when we continue in the locker room here on
- 32:29Speaker 3: the Steelers Audio Network.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Please please live Covery Jump Dot twenty twenty six Steelers

- 33:25Speaker 3: And we thank you very much for being with us
- 33:27Speaker 3: here in the locker room today. So uh, nope, Well,
- 33:30Speaker 3: practice is going on, but it's it's pretty much over
- 33:34Speaker 3: in the Dunlap Center. It might be over by now,
- 33:36Speaker 3: probably is over.
- 33:37Speaker 2: It is over by now because I saw all the
- 33:40Speaker 2: school buses are lined up.
- 33:41Speaker 3: Okay.
- 33:42Speaker 5: Also, today's Family Day, so families we're here. So now
- 33:47Speaker 5: everybody's processing and probably having lunch, probably either I don't
- 33:52Speaker 5: know if they're going to be necessarily in the actual
- 33:54Speaker 5: dining hall they usually do Family Day. Now this is
- 33:57Speaker 5: a new regime, so I don't know. And we're on
- 33:59Speaker 5: air during this. So Family Day lunch is either in
- 34:04Speaker 5: the gymnasium because of the amount of family and sometimes
- 34:08Speaker 5: you know it'll be in the cafeteria, but it's always
- 34:10Speaker 5: been in the family here, but it's always been dinner
- 34:13Speaker 5: because the practice is a later practice, so this is
- 34:16Speaker 5: a different way.
- 34:17Speaker 2: So I don't even know how.
- 34:18Speaker 5: Family family lunch will go versus family dinner, but I
- 34:22Speaker 5: know that is one of the elements there, that family's here.
- 34:25Speaker 5: So that's why you saw the buses kind of moving
- 34:28Speaker 5: around here, rob the school buses they have or cheese
- 34:31Speaker 5: wagons that I like to call it the cheese wagons
- 34:34Speaker 5: because a lot of family came up today because this
- 34:36Speaker 5: was the official family.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Day of practice, gotcha, So a lot more.
- 34:40Speaker 5: People to move around back and forth than a normal
- 34:43Speaker 5: practice environment. So they're doing that now and and that's
- 34:48Speaker 5: kind of the element. So we have practices over I mean, heck,
- 34:50Speaker 5: they even got the little trolley over there, fred Rogers
- 34:53Speaker 5: trolley as I call it.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Nice as we all remember.
- 34:55Speaker 3: Oh yeah, absolutely, that's Rogers Centers where they have the Yeah,
- 35:00Speaker 3: they have the media gathering. Yeah yeah, I did I
- 35:05Speaker 3: tell you this last week when jakwon Briskers family was there.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Oh yeah, but no.
- 35:10Speaker 3: Guy asked me, are you related to Fred Rogers? Like
- 35:13Speaker 3: what that related to Fred Rogers? That's that must be
- 35:18Speaker 3: what I'm going with, I said, But I told him,
- 35:20Speaker 3: I told him I'm not, but I do have an
- 35:23Speaker 3: indoor sweater and that outdoor sweater I did.
- 35:27Speaker 6: At least I got a laugh out of it.
- 35:29Speaker 3: But no, I didn't know. I'm not no relations to
- 35:31Speaker 3: Fred Rogers.
- 35:32Speaker 2: First one.
- 35:32Speaker 3: The first time I've heard that.
- 35:34Speaker 2: So I wanted to ask you.
- 35:37Speaker 3: You're a young pop, you're coming into the league, you're
- 35:40Speaker 3: a fan of the game. Was there ever a party
- 35:43Speaker 3: that was like, whoa man, Russ Grimm, This is my coach,
- 35:46Speaker 3: Russ Grimm.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Hall of Famer. I don't think he was in the
- 35:48Speaker 2: Hall of Fame then, but now, well he went in.
- 35:51Speaker 2: He went in after he left us. Okay, so but
- 35:54Speaker 2: we all.
- 35:55Speaker 5: Went up when Russ went in because Dick Lebou went
- 35:58Speaker 5: in too, gotcha. So all the offensive line, we all
- 36:01Speaker 5: wore Russ grim jerseys. Nice to the Hall of Fame
- 36:04Speaker 5: for us. And then of course all the defensive guys
- 36:06Speaker 5: wore lebow jerseys.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Right, so we we had like this kind of cross sex.
- 36:10Speaker 5: They got Lions and and and and Washington Redskins because
- 36:14Speaker 5: still the Redskins back then. Yep, jerseys are and they're
- 36:17Speaker 5: Steelers players, and it was like no, because these were
- 36:20Speaker 5: our coaches. They just happened to also Hall of Fame
- 36:22Speaker 5: players as well. And you know, Dick Lebow when they
- 36:25Speaker 5: you know, is one guy you could argue is a
- 36:27Speaker 5: two timer. Yes, right player and coach because of his
- 36:31Speaker 5: contributions to the game in the three four defense and
- 36:34Speaker 5: also was a was a heck of a defensive back
- 36:36Speaker 5: for the Detroit Lions back in the day.
- 36:38Speaker 2: He had a three time yeah, three time pro.
- 36:40Speaker 5: But he also sixty two picks and I to say
- 36:42Speaker 5: he actually had the league record in interceptions during his time.
- 36:46Speaker 5: So yeah, so you know you're talking about going in
- 36:49Speaker 5: with with great company. But but it was I mean
- 36:52Speaker 5: when I first got here, I mean it was not
- 36:53Speaker 5: only seeing the guys I was going to be playing with,
- 36:56Speaker 5: like Jerome Bettis who I'd watched, and he was also
- 36:58Speaker 5: a pop culture icon as well because I watching him
- 37:01Speaker 5: on Living Singing.
- 37:02Speaker 2: You know, he did commercials, he was in TV shows
- 37:04Speaker 2: like that.
- 37:05Speaker 5: La rams Era like bred all of these opportunities for
- 37:09Speaker 5: him and carried over when he was with the Steelers,
- 37:11Speaker 5: and so you know, walking around there, but then yeah,
- 37:14Speaker 5: I walk in the room, I'm like holy crap, that's
- 37:15Speaker 5: Russ Grab And then Dick Lebau was my father's coach
- 37:19Speaker 5: in the Bengals. He was his defensive coordinat He used
- 37:22Speaker 5: my dad's first stand up roverbacker. Wow, when he was
- 37:26Speaker 5: putting in the three four defense. So you walk and
- 37:29Speaker 5: you're like, holy crap, Like these guys are my coaches.
- 37:32Speaker 5: Like Ken Wisdom, Hunt was a tight end with the
- 37:34Speaker 5: Falcons down in the South, right. I catch Falcons games
- 37:37Speaker 5: when I'd be at my grandma's house. So it's like,
- 37:39Speaker 5: you see all these You're like, I'm here, Like I'm here.
- 37:43Speaker 5: I had to pinch myself because there was a couple
- 37:44Speaker 5: of times where I was just like I was staring
- 37:47Speaker 5: right and I was just in awe of these individuals.
- 37:50Speaker 5: And then you're like, I have the opportunity to join
- 37:53Speaker 5: this club, right, you know.
- 37:55Speaker 2: It's a it's a pretty surreal moment.
- 37:58Speaker 5: And I think I got that because I was a
- 38:00Speaker 5: fan of football. I grew up in Orlando, yes, so
- 38:03Speaker 5: I didn't have a pro team affiliation. The Tampa Bay
- 38:05Speaker 5: Buccaneers the Creamsickle Bucks was not.
- 38:07Speaker 2: The TV watched back in the day. They were terrible.
- 38:10Speaker 5: And then you know, I watched some Bucks games because
- 38:13Speaker 5: of Warren sapp when he got there when I was
- 38:15Speaker 5: in high school. But I was a defensive player. But
- 38:19Speaker 5: nobody was tuning in to watch Buccaneers games like that. No,
- 38:22Speaker 5: so so, yeah, so I watched the entire league growing up,
- 38:25Speaker 5: and that's why I was like, Yeah, I didn't have
- 38:26Speaker 5: a favorite team.
- 38:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 38:28Speaker 5: I was more of a basketball player because Orlando Magic
- 38:31Speaker 5: came there in eighty nine. Yeah and so, and I
- 38:33Speaker 5: was a ball boy for the Magic, so I.
- 38:34Speaker 2: Had a close of it.
- 38:36Speaker 5: The arena was two blocks from my house, you know.
- 38:39Speaker 5: So I was a big time basketball fan and football
- 38:42Speaker 5: was just a fun and sport to watch.
- 38:44Speaker 2: That I wanted to participate in.
- 38:45Speaker 3: By the way, those Bucks before just a little before
- 38:48Speaker 3: your time, lost their first twenty six games in NFL existence. Yeah,
- 38:52Speaker 3: oh and fourteen to zero and twelve. Their coach was
- 38:55Speaker 3: John McKay, the legendary coach at USC who just had
- 38:58Speaker 3: some amazing, amazing quotes. Just a couple for those of
- 39:03Speaker 3: you who are not familiar with John McKay. Somebody said,
- 39:08Speaker 3: after the game, Hey, what did you think of your team?
- 39:10Speaker 3: What do you think your team's execution? He said, I'm
- 39:12Speaker 3: all for it. And then and then the other one
- 39:14Speaker 3: was he started a press conference, he said, well, we
- 39:17Speaker 3: didn't block anybody, but we made up for it by
- 39:20Speaker 3: not tackling. So that's one of my all time favorite quotes.
- 39:24Speaker 6: He was a he was already a legendary coach at
- 39:27Speaker 6: that time, but I mean he was, and I think
- 39:28Speaker 6: he stuck around long enough to see them win when
- 39:31Speaker 6: they finally got they finally got going, and they got
- 39:33Speaker 6: Ricky Bell out of USC and then you know, tragically
- 39:36Speaker 6: he passed away.
- 39:36Speaker 3: But yeah, it was they were. They were not unentertaining
- 39:41Speaker 3: with John Kay as a head coach. So so I
- 39:44Speaker 3: do wonder were there any other and not asking you
- 39:47Speaker 3: to name names, were there guys who were just like
- 39:50Speaker 3: I mean, And this might be an age sensitivity thing
- 39:53Speaker 3: for me because you're in different eras, and you know,
- 39:56Speaker 3: the older areas always says kids these days, they you know,
- 40:00Speaker 3: I have the same work ethic we had, you know,
- 40:02Speaker 3: as if as if civilization has been on one long
- 40:04Speaker 3: slow decline since man first you know, stepped out of
- 40:08Speaker 3: a cave. You know, uh, but anyway, and then so
- 40:12Speaker 3: so that's the older generation. The younger generation is like, man,
- 40:15Speaker 3: you don't know anything. You know, you can't even Max
- 40:18Speaker 3: is helping me with my electronics through the commercial break.
- 40:20Speaker 3: You can't do anything. You know, you don't know anything
- 40:22Speaker 3: about this that. So I just wonder sometimes, you know,
- 40:25Speaker 3: with the with the generation gap, do the players do
- 40:28Speaker 3: all the young players did they for you understand who
- 40:31Speaker 3: Russ Grimm was? Did any of them have to be educated?
- 40:33Speaker 3: And I bring that up now because I'm looking at
- 40:36Speaker 3: this d line group and I'm wondering if these young
- 40:38Speaker 3: guys are like man Tomato Pecko Man, I used to
- 40:41Speaker 3: watch them all the time. That dude was good. Uh
- 40:43Speaker 3: and we know it's that when he was playing for
- 40:45Speaker 3: the Bengals last couple of years of the Ravens, he
- 40:47Speaker 3: was a good player. Is that Does that give them,
- 40:50Speaker 3: as you said earlier, some street cred?
- 40:53Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 40:53Speaker 5: I think And thinking of Demota Peko's case, Jerry Evans,
- 40:56Speaker 5: who's assistant offensive line coach, like these are guys that
- 40:59Speaker 5: played in the formative years they were watching football, you know,
- 41:02Speaker 5: and you heard these guys because, like you said, Jerry
- 41:04Speaker 5: Evans was getting Pro Bowls and All Pro honors, so
- 41:07Speaker 5: you knew who he was. If you didn't watch the
- 41:09Speaker 5: Saints live, you still knew because there was enough game
- 41:13Speaker 5: footage and then they would release who made these teams,
- 41:15Speaker 5: and you're checking those teams that you knew who he was.
- 41:19Speaker 5: And I think for Demotopeco, especially like he was on
- 41:23Speaker 5: those Bengals teams back when they were hot and you know,
- 41:25Speaker 5: going through playoff runs and everything else.
- 41:28Speaker 2: So he was a main fixture.
- 41:29Speaker 5: And you know he had the hair you know once, yeah,
- 41:32Speaker 5: he had he had something that stood out on the
- 41:35Speaker 5: field of uniformity.
- 41:37Speaker 2: There was an outlier. So if you.
- 41:39Speaker 5: Watched any AFC North football in the last fifteen to
- 41:43Speaker 5: twenty years, you knew who Demotopeco was, right. And I
- 41:46Speaker 5: think that that helps when you bring those guys in
- 41:48Speaker 5: the room, because they insulate a group and they allow
- 41:52Speaker 5: that group to feel good, like, man, this guy gets
- 41:53Speaker 5: it because he did what we did, you know.
- 41:57Speaker 2: And there's a different level of that.
- 41:59Speaker 5: When I walked in that room and Russ asked me
- 42:01Speaker 5: to pull it wasn't like Russ was telling me to
- 42:04Speaker 5: do something that was philosophical. Russ was doing it in
- 42:08Speaker 5: cracking skulls and he had And here's the other thing.
- 42:12Speaker 5: If you didn't want to believe it, Russ would then
- 42:15Speaker 5: show you the drill of him doing it and why
- 42:17Speaker 5: we're doing the drill and him as a player was
- 42:20Speaker 5: doing that drill, right, you.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Know, Yeah, I mean, and you don't need to be a.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Former player, like I'm sure you don't have to.
- 42:27Speaker 3: I'm sure there were a lot of players who came
- 42:29Speaker 3: in here and the first time they saw Mike Tomlin
- 42:32Speaker 3: heard that booming voice, are like, man, that's Mike Tomlin.
- 42:35Speaker 3: That guy has coached this year. You know, I saw
- 42:37Speaker 3: the Super Bowl. Right, he's leader and you're looking up.
- 42:39Speaker 3: There's gonna be a sense of all. Mike Tomlin never
- 42:41Speaker 3: played in the NFL. Right, you don't have to play
- 42:43Speaker 3: in the NFL to get that. I just wonder if
- 42:45Speaker 3: you know, there's a little more you know, and and
- 42:49Speaker 3: whether a conversation might happen, Hey, coach, you ever come
- 42:52Speaker 3: across this, because uh, there are great coaches who never
- 42:56Speaker 3: played at the highest level, great coaches. I just wonder
- 42:59Speaker 3: if there's a little different way those guys are viewed
- 43:01Speaker 3: or they just viewed simply the same way.
- 43:03Speaker 5: No, they're view they're viewed in a different way at
- 43:06Speaker 5: the positional level, right exactly, because there's that's right, But
- 43:11Speaker 5: like you said, at the leadership position that doesn't matter.
- 43:13Speaker 5: You have to be you have to be a leader
- 43:15Speaker 5: of men. That's a head coach.
- 43:16Speaker 2: But you can be a great player a terrible leader.
- 43:19Speaker 3: You'd be a great player and be a terrible coach.
- 43:20Speaker 5: Yeah, And so that doesn't necessarily have to translate because
- 43:24Speaker 5: a lot of these guys, I mean a lot of
- 43:26Speaker 5: them all play college ball at least, so you know
- 43:29Speaker 5: that there was a football background with them, and so
- 43:34Speaker 5: that can help buy some of it.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Now, Mike tomin was a unique case.
- 43:37Speaker 5: Mike Tomlin comes in, he played against James Ferry and
- 43:40Speaker 5: now he's coaching enough, right, you know, and I think,
- 43:43Speaker 5: like a Jeff Fisher, Right, Jeff Fisher, how do you
- 43:46Speaker 5: coach one of your roommates in college in Bruce Matthews.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Yeah right, you know, I can't.
- 43:53Speaker 5: I can't sit there and go, hey, you know, Bruce,
- 43:57Speaker 5: come on, let's pick it up.
- 43:58Speaker 2: And he's like, really, really, Jeff, is that I say?
- 44:00Speaker 2: He's not gonna call him coach Fisher.
- 44:02Speaker 5: I'm like, man, we were in the college and we
- 44:04Speaker 5: have stuff that Thank god for no social media, but hey, bro,
- 44:08Speaker 5: like to tone it down.
- 44:10Speaker 2: I I know, I know, I know. Jeffrey Jeffrey Fisher.
- 44:14Speaker 5: And that's some of the things that was funny early
- 44:16Speaker 5: on was having coach Tomlin here is that he's the
- 44:18Speaker 5: same age as a lies, He's the same age as
- 44:21Speaker 5: Charlie Bash, He's the same age as James Ferrier. James
- 44:24Speaker 5: played against him when he was at UVA and he
- 44:26Speaker 5: was at William and Mary. Now, the other funny thing
- 44:28Speaker 5: is that his background was wide receiver. Because he was
- 44:31Speaker 5: a wide receiver, right, we never had issues with wide
- 44:34Speaker 5: receiver drafting, did we with find the talent in lower rounds.
- 44:40Speaker 5: He knew how to find the gyms of players. Now
- 44:42Speaker 5: we had to manage the emotional state of those players,
- 44:45Speaker 5: which he did, which I thought he did a tremendous
- 44:47Speaker 5: job overall when you think about the different cast of characters.
- 44:50Speaker 2: We've had on this team. But that's where his background is.
- 44:53Speaker 5: So that already has a certain credibility in CACHE because
- 44:56Speaker 5: at least he can say to a certain degree, I
- 44:58Speaker 5: did it, and I did it against the collegiate level.
- 45:01Speaker 2: I made it that far. But like you said, it's
- 45:03Speaker 2: something about playing in the NFL. It just brings it.
- 45:06Speaker 5: But that's the that's a position coach thing I think
- 45:09Speaker 5: that has a bigger.
- 45:10Speaker 3: Impact, and it just might be you go to a
- 45:12Speaker 3: guy in a different way, just like you go to
- 45:14Speaker 3: a leader of men in a in a different category
- 45:18Speaker 3: of question that you might have for him, that you
- 45:19Speaker 3: might bypass that that that former player assistant coach, like
- 45:23Speaker 3: this isn't really a question for him, is a question
- 45:26Speaker 3: for somebody else. So I just wondered about that and
- 45:28Speaker 3: whether the players recognize, Hey, Dematopeco.
- 45:31Speaker 5: Was dude, he's a good player, man, really good. And
- 45:34Speaker 5: just to go back and and to my era, think
- 45:38Speaker 5: about this. My head coach played in Bill Kauer special teams.
- 45:43Speaker 5: That's why our special teams was always he was. He
- 45:44Speaker 5: was on top of it. Both are coordinators Ken Wizzon
- 45:47Speaker 5: Hunt and Dick Lebou both former players. Keith Butler linebackers coach,
- 45:54Speaker 5: was a former player, right. Darren Perry and Carnell Lake
- 45:59Speaker 5: both of the defense back coaches that I had back then,
- 46:02Speaker 5: both former players. John Mitchell was one of the first
- 46:06Speaker 5: African American players for Bear Bryant. Ye say more right,
- 46:11Speaker 5: So the cache on that defense. That's why when Mike
- 46:13Speaker 5: Tommlan came, he didn't get to touch defense because there
- 46:16Speaker 5: was all stars on defense. By himself, and like you said,
- 46:20Speaker 5: and then Russ Russ did not transfer, but I had
- 46:23Speaker 5: Russ under b C and Ken wizen Hunt was OC.
- 46:27Speaker 2: So you had that right there.
- 46:28Speaker 5: And then you know Bruce Arians was our wide receivers coach,
- 46:32Speaker 5: but Ba also coached under Bear Bryant, so he came
- 46:35Speaker 5: in having a cachet from his coaching career about what
- 46:39Speaker 5: he did. And then of course Dick Hoke. Dick Holk
- 46:42Speaker 5: had zero layoff player for the Steelers for a long
- 46:46Speaker 5: time and literally immediately went into coaching and had.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Fifty plus consecutive years with the Steelers.
- 46:52Speaker 5: So you have these guys, and then James Daniels coach
- 46:55Speaker 5: Daniels and tight ends coach, but you had Whizz as
- 46:57Speaker 5: a buffer as well for James Damis.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Because we was a tight end, right, So you had
- 47:03Speaker 2: all of this layer on layer on layer of cache.
- 47:06Speaker 5: And then like you said, Mike Tomlin comes in, and
- 47:08Speaker 5: Mike Tomlin makes some tweaks, but you know, it was
- 47:11Speaker 5: a lot of familiar.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Guys and a lot of new guys.
- 47:13Speaker 5: And so he brought in a Ken Anderson, who a
- 47:17Speaker 5: legend with the with the Cincinnati Bengals and was a
- 47:21Speaker 5: guy who played against the Steelers for a long time.
- 47:24Speaker 5: That comes in as your quarterbacks coach right afterwards. So
- 47:26Speaker 5: you have these guys, and I had Larry Zerline and
- 47:28Speaker 5: Larry was one of those. He was an outlier, right,
- 47:30Speaker 5: He wasn't a former offensive lineman. He was truly a coach,
- 47:35Speaker 5: but he had coached so long in the league that
- 47:37Speaker 5: you knew who he was. He was at Cleveland for
- 47:39Speaker 5: a while and that came over to Pittsburgh, then went
- 47:42Speaker 5: on to the Cardinals. So you had these veteran coaches,
- 47:45Speaker 5: but the formative parts yet former players just bring a
- 47:49Speaker 5: different cachet and a different accountability to players, right because like,
- 47:53Speaker 5: I'm not asking you to do anything that I haven't
- 47:55Speaker 5: done before.
