- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to A Peak Inside Gator Football Alley Peak.
- 0:03Speaker 1: This is presented to you by PrizePix. Don't forget, new
- 0:06Speaker 1: users can download the PrizePix app.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Use our code. It's HMA.
- 0:10Speaker 1: If you play a $ 5 lineup and you win, you'll
- 0:12Speaker 1: get $ 150 in lineups instantly. Okay, I am very excited
- 0:17Speaker 1: about this. I am chatting with Gator great Louis Oliver,
- 0:21Speaker 1: who is going to be the Mr.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Two Bits this weekend.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Talk to me about what it means to you to
- 0:27Speaker 1: be back in that stadium representing Gator Nation.
- 0:31Speaker 3: I mean, I'm so excited. It's been so long since
- 0:34Speaker 3: I've actually been on that field, almost 40 years to
- 0:38Speaker 3: be exact. I think my last game was back in 88.
- 0:43Speaker 3: That was the last time I was on that field. So,
- 0:46Speaker 3: you know, to come back and get in front of
- 0:51Speaker 3: those fans, that stadium, where it all started for me,
- 0:55Speaker 3: you know, and then representing Mr. Edmondson as Mr. Two Bits,
- 1:00Speaker 3: I'm more than ecstatic.
- 1:03Speaker 1: We are so excited you're going to be back. And
- 1:05Speaker 1: I was doing some research on you, and I saw
- 1:07Speaker 1: that you said you love Coach Summerall and that you
- 1:08Speaker 1: even compared him to a young Don Shula. What is
- 1:12Speaker 1: it about Summerall's personality and coaching style that reminds you
- 1:16Speaker 1: of Coach Shula?
- 1:17Speaker 3: He's all about accountability. He doesn't do excuses. I like
- 1:23Speaker 3: his energy. I mean, he comes, he's very high tempo guy,
- 1:26Speaker 3: which Coach Shula was, even when I got here and
- 1:29Speaker 3: he was up in age, very high tempo guy, very energetic,
- 1:33Speaker 3: but he expects the best from everybody, whether it be
- 1:37Speaker 3: the players, the coaches, the training staff, the medical staff.
- 1:41Speaker 3: He wants everybody doing the most that they can, when
- 1:46Speaker 3: they can, how they can for the betterment of the team.
- 1:50Speaker 3: And he took no excuses, none excuses. And then on
- 1:54Speaker 3: top of that, Coach Summerall, he's got a little humor
- 1:56Speaker 3: to him too. So I like that as well.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Florida's 3-0.
- 2:01Speaker 1: They're coming off of that 44-39 road win at Auburn.
- 2:04Speaker 1: What have you seen from this team that makes you
- 2:06Speaker 1: believe Florida may really be.
- 2:08Speaker 2: On the way back?
- 2:10Speaker 3: Well, I mean, offensively, just looking at the team, I mean,
- 2:14Speaker 3: the way they're built offensively, running the ball to open
- 2:18Speaker 3: up the passing game, which is what I thought his
- 2:22Speaker 3: predecessor should have done last season. But He's got the blueprint.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Jayden's running the ball well. The offensive line is blocking well.
- 2:31Speaker 3: The defense is playing well, but we're going to have
- 2:33Speaker 3: to play a lot better, especially in the secondary this week,
- 2:37Speaker 3: this Saturday against Ole Miss and Chamberlain. So that part
- 2:41Speaker 3: I like. The energy's back. The level is up. The
- 2:45Speaker 3: competition is there in practice, and it's time to go.
- 2:49Speaker 3: It's time for us to go now.
- 2:52Speaker 1: You know, you mentioned Trinidad Chambliss and as a former safety,
- 2:55Speaker 1: what is the first thing Florida secondary needs to take
- 2:58Speaker 1: away from him?
- 3:00Speaker 3: Well, first of all, you're going to have to take
- 3:02Speaker 3: away the passes, and especially the deep pass. I mean,
- 3:05Speaker 3: we played him last year. We were up 24-20 at halftime.
- 3:09Speaker 3: He hit some big passes. But on top of that, Lacey,
- 3:12Speaker 3: their running back, gashed us for over 220 yards rushing.
- 3:16Speaker 3: So these guys got to tackle, and you got to
- 3:18Speaker 3: tackle forcefully. And then when the ball is in the air,
- 3:22Speaker 3: it's your ball. That's how, you know, when I played...
- 3:25Speaker 3: I'm either going to get the ball or I'm either
- 3:27Speaker 3: going to get a body with the ball and it's
- 3:29Speaker 3: going to be hit violently. And that's the way they
- 3:32Speaker 3: got to play. And that's what's going to get the
- 3:34Speaker 3: job done on Saturday.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Chambliss is dangerous when the original play breaks down. From
- 3:40Speaker 1: a DB perspective, how difficult is it to stay disciplined
- 3:43Speaker 1: when a quarterback starts extending plays?
- 3:47Speaker 3: Well, when they're extending plays, you got to stay deep.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You can't be jumping routes, especially early routes, shallow routes.
- 3:54Speaker 3: You got to stay in your back paddle. You got
- 3:55Speaker 3: to keep your eyes open, head on a swivel. And
- 3:58Speaker 3: most of all, the guys have to communicate back there.
- 4:01Speaker 3: In the secondary, you got to let guys know when
- 4:03Speaker 3: somebody's crossing, when somebody's coming into your zone, so you
- 4:07Speaker 3: can pick them up if it's zone, if it's man. Hey,
- 4:09Speaker 3: you got to know your technique. You got to know
- 4:11Speaker 3: your leverage point. And, you know, that defensive front, He's
- 4:16Speaker 3: got to let Woods go. He's got to let Oya
- 4:20Speaker 3: Badejo go. He's got to let them guys go. The
- 4:23Speaker 3: hell with read and run. We getting up for this.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Send that defensive line to put pressure on this guy.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Play on their side of the football, and we can
- 4:32Speaker 3: win this football game.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Okay, so I heard communication, and I've also heard discipline.
- 4:37Speaker 1: When Ole Miss wants to spread you out, which one
- 4:39Speaker 1: is more important, the communication before the snap or the
- 4:42Speaker 1: discipline after the snap?
- 4:45Speaker 3: I mean, they're both equally important because once the ball
- 4:48Speaker 3: is snapped, if you're not talking, you're not communicating, there's
- 4:51Speaker 3: going to be breakdowns. So if you know he's extending
- 4:54Speaker 3: the play, keeping your eyes on the receiver, keeping your
- 4:57Speaker 3: eyes in your zone if it's zone, keeping your eyes
- 5:00Speaker 3: on the man if it's man, and once that ball
- 5:03Speaker 3: is in the air, you got to be screaming ball, ball, ball,
- 5:07Speaker 3: so the corners know, the linebackers know that the ball
- 5:09Speaker 3: is in the air and somebody can possibly make a
- 5:12Speaker 3: play on the ball.
- 5:14Speaker 1: How aggressive should Florida be defensively? Do you pressure Chambliss
- 5:18Speaker 1: and risk giving him escape lanes? Or would you rather
- 5:21Speaker 1: make him sit in the pocket and consistently.
- 5:24Speaker 3: No, no. I'm all about pressuring a running quarterback. He's
- 5:28Speaker 3: a quarterback. He's not a running back. He's not Jaden Ball.
- 5:32Speaker 3: He's not willing to take 40, 50 hits a game.
- 5:35Speaker 3: He's a quarterback. He wants to throw the ball and
- 5:38Speaker 3: sit back there at his leisure. I come with pressure everywhere.
- 5:42Speaker 3: All the time because pressure busts pipes.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Florida went into Jordan-Hare and won a close SEC game,
- 5:49Speaker 1: and you've played in hostile environments. How much confidence can
- 5:54Speaker 1: one road win give this young football team?
- 5:58Speaker 3: I mean, I mean, when you go into a place
- 6:00Speaker 3: like Auburn, I mean, you know, it's going to be
- 6:02Speaker 3: packed to the rafters, you know, and they're sound SEC
- 6:05Speaker 3: football team. So when you anytime you can go into
- 6:08Speaker 3: an SEC team's hometown on their field with their fan
- 6:12Speaker 3: and pull off a victory in the manner that we did,
- 6:15Speaker 3: it's got to give the team a ton of confidence.
- 6:18Speaker 3: And now we're playing home on Saturday. You know, it's
- 6:21Speaker 3: going to be 90,000 plus fans. Come on. If you,
- 6:24Speaker 3: if you ain't ready for this, then give up your scholarship,
- 6:27Speaker 3: go back home and sit on the couch.
- 6:30Speaker 1: You know, I want to talk a little bit about
- 6:31Speaker 1: your career. You came to Florida as a walk-on and
- 6:34Speaker 1: you eventually became a two-time first team, all American, a
- 6:37Speaker 1: first round NFL draft pick. Where did that belief come
- 6:41Speaker 1: from that you belonged with anybody in the country?
- 6:46Speaker 3: I think God gave me that as soon as I
- 6:48Speaker 3: could walk. I mean, from as early as I can remember,
- 6:51Speaker 3: I told my mom, I said, Mom, I'm going to...
- 6:53Speaker 3: Because growing up, I was always a Dolphin fan watching
- 6:56Speaker 3: Mercury Morris and Larry Zonka and Bob Greasy and those guys.
- 7:00Speaker 3: And so I just told my mom, Mom, I'm going
- 7:02Speaker 3: to be a professional football player. And I know she
- 7:07Speaker 3: was she just thought her baby was just talking, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 3: you know, this is what he wants to become. And
- 7:12Speaker 3: then once I got to high school, wasn't really recruited
- 7:16Speaker 3: by any colleges, mostly, you know, Ivy League schools, but
- 7:21Speaker 3: I wanted to play football and I felt like I
- 7:23Speaker 3: could play on that level. I could have gone, I
- 7:25Speaker 3: could have walked on at Florida state. I could have
- 7:27Speaker 3: walked on at university of Miami, but you know, being
- 7:30Speaker 3: that we have some, uh, some history with guys coming
- 7:33Speaker 3: from my high school, going to a university of Florida,
- 7:36Speaker 3: Ray McDonald, Greg Bain, Rondy Weston, Tommy Duhart. I was like, look,
- 7:40Speaker 3: I played with these guys. I played with them, practice
- 7:43Speaker 3: with them. If they can play there, I can play there.
- 7:45Speaker 3: And when I got there, I just, you know, I
- 7:48Speaker 3: grew three inches. I gained 25 pounds of muscle. And, uh,
- 7:54Speaker 3: I just went ballistic. We're going to take a.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Quick break from this interview to let you guys know
- 7:59Speaker 1: about something really exciting. You guys have reached out repeatedly
- 8:02Speaker 1: over the last several months and asked for an audio
- 8:05Speaker 1: option for the show. So we are now on Apple
- 8:08Speaker 1: Podcast and on Spotify. If there is a streaming platform
- 8:12Speaker 1: that you guys use that we're not available on for audio,
- 8:15Speaker 1: shoot me a message and let me know that we
- 8:17Speaker 1: should be there and we'll see if we can make
- 8:18Speaker 1: it happen. You guys have been really adamant about the
- 8:21Speaker 1: fact that an audio option.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Would be really good.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So we want to make sure we are giving you
- 8:26Speaker 1: what you have asked for. So again, Apple Podcasts, Spotify,
- 8:29Speaker 1: you want to listen to us all the way up
- 8:32Speaker 1: to Gainesville on your way on Saturday. It is now
- 8:34Speaker 1: an option for you at the gym, anywhere where you
- 8:37Speaker 1: don't want to have your phone in your hands looking
- 8:40Speaker 1: at a screen. Now you should be able to do that.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I appreciate all of you guys for your feedback and
- 8:44Speaker 1: for your support. I read an article where you said
- 8:47Speaker 1: your mentality was essentially.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I am going to outwork everybody.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Do you think that that mentality is harder to create
- 8:55Speaker 1: in college football today? Or do you think it really
- 8:57Speaker 1: is timeless?
- 9:02Speaker 3: Most of these guys, they've been, they've been, um, given
- 9:08Speaker 3: so much, uh, praise so early in their lives that
- 9:12Speaker 3: they relax and they get comfortable. So they kind of
- 9:14Speaker 3: just sit in this air of, I'm already good. I
- 9:21Speaker 3: didn't see myself as being already good. I saw guys
- 9:24Speaker 3: who were good and I said, not only do I
- 9:27Speaker 3: want to be that good, I want to supersede that good.
- 9:30Speaker 3: So when I got there, it was just like Lewis
- 9:34Speaker 3: just worked, outworked Anybody everybody, you know if a worker
- 9:40Speaker 3: if I went to a workout and and they tell
- 9:42Speaker 3: me hey They told me hey this guy did this
- 9:45Speaker 3: this guy ran this fast. This guy did this I'm
- 9:49Speaker 3: gonna stay there until I supersede that You know, so
- 9:53Speaker 3: for me it was just about work. I like to
- 9:55Speaker 3: go I like to measure myself. So. I was looking
- 9:59Speaker 3: for the sharpest iron. That I could measure my iron against.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Give me one.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Lewis Oliver practice story. Like somebody that you hit. Or
- 10:07Speaker 1: somebody who got you. Like a moment where you're like.
- 10:10Speaker 2: All right. I can do this. I can play at
- 10:12Speaker 2: this level.
- 10:15Speaker 3: I remember Emmett Smith. When Emmett first came. To the
- 10:19Speaker 3: first practice. And, you know, I hosted him when he came.
- 10:23Speaker 3: And Coach Galen told me, he said, Lewis, we got
- 10:26Speaker 3: to get this guy. He's going to really help our team.
- 10:29Speaker 3: I said, Coach, I got him. I got him. So
- 10:31Speaker 3: I took him in a round. And fortunately for us,
- 10:34Speaker 3: he came to University of Florida. His very first practice,
- 10:38Speaker 3: it was offense against defense. And I said, I'm going
- 10:41Speaker 3: to destroy this guy. I said, I'm going to destroy
- 10:44Speaker 3: this guy. So it was a run play where he
- 10:47Speaker 3: was supposed to come to the C-gap. on the tight
- 10:50Speaker 3: end side of the formation. But I was deep in
- 10:53Speaker 3: the secondary, pretending that I was playing pass, but I
- 10:58Speaker 3: was looking at the offensive linemen and I saw how
- 11:01Speaker 3: much pressure they were putting on their forearms, so I
- 11:03Speaker 3: knew it was a run. And I said, if he
- 11:05Speaker 3: comes through this seahole, I'm going to take his face off.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Snapped the ball, snapped the ball. I come flying through
- 11:14Speaker 3: the seahole. And the running back, Coach Kirksey, said, hey, Emmitt,
- 11:18Speaker 3: you were supposed to go through the seahole. And Emmitt said, no,
- 11:22Speaker 3: I saw 18 coming through the seahole. So I went
- 11:25Speaker 3: to the opposite side. And I say, how did this
- 11:28Speaker 3: guy see me coming like that? And he was like, yo, dude,
- 11:33Speaker 3: I watched the linebackers and the safeties, but I never
- 11:36Speaker 3: hit him. But I was going to kill him if
- 11:39Speaker 3: he had come through that seahole.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I love that story.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Do you think Emmitt is the best player that you
- 11:45Speaker 1: ever played with at Florida?
- 11:46Speaker 2: There was a lot of really big names.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Oh, my God. Yeah, I mean, I can't even say.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I mean, you got linemen like Lummis Brown and Jeff
- 11:54Speaker 3: Zimmerman and Crawford Curry. And you had guys like... Alonzo Johnson,
- 12:00Speaker 3: Wilbur Marshall, Rickon Teal, Lorenza Hampton. I mean, three first-round
- 12:06Speaker 3: draft picks, three running backs, first round on one team.
- 12:10Speaker 3: John L., Neal Anderson, Lorenza Hampton, Lomas Brown. I mean it.
- 12:15Speaker 3: It was crazy. And those guys taught me how to compete.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Like when I got there, every position was competing. Nobody
- 12:23Speaker 3: just said, okay, since you're that guy, I'm going to
- 12:26Speaker 3: let you relax and sit in this role. No, it
- 12:30Speaker 3: was like, yo, one play dude. And you could be
- 12:32Speaker 3: on the bench and never get back on the field.
- 12:35Speaker 1: You know, you played with so much talent at Florida.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And then when you played for the dolphins, you played
- 12:39Speaker 1: for Don Shula and With Dan Marino, what did being
- 12:43Speaker 1: around professionals at that level teach you about what championship
- 12:47Speaker 1: level accountability looks like?
- 12:51Speaker 3: It just taught you how to be a pro. Coach
- 12:54Speaker 3: Shuler was not the type. He was going to set
- 12:57Speaker 3: the example just so you know what he expected from you.
- 13:02Speaker 3: And if you didn't meet that example... I mean, you
- 13:04Speaker 3: didn't have to wander or ponder what was going to happen.
- 13:07Speaker 3: You were gone. I mean, you were gone. So getting
- 13:10Speaker 3: there to see guys like Marino, you know, early to practice,
- 13:15Speaker 3: late after practice, watching film, that just taught me how
- 13:18Speaker 3: to be a professional. So I didn't want to be
- 13:21Speaker 3: the weak link. I never wanted to be the weak link.
- 13:23Speaker 3: So if I'm going to be on a team, you
- 13:25Speaker 3: could damn well be sure that I'm on a team
- 13:28Speaker 3: because I'm I'm coming with purpose and I'm coming to
- 13:31Speaker 3: play ball and I'm coming to play ball at a
- 13:34Speaker 3: level so high that I'm trying to get you not
- 13:37Speaker 3: to even match it. So, you know, they set the example.
- 13:40Speaker 3: I was just trying to do my best to hit
- 13:42Speaker 3: the team in whatever way, shape, form or fashion. And
- 13:46Speaker 3: it's just being a professional. These guys now, I mean,
- 13:49Speaker 3: I'm happy that they're getting paid on the collegiate level.
- 13:52Speaker 3: They think they're already pros, and they're not. There's several
- 13:56Speaker 3: more notches to go, so I don't want them to relax.
- 14:00Speaker 1: You know, we talk a lot about the standard at Florida,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and we haven't been meeting the standard.
- 14:06Speaker 2: In a while there.
- 14:08Speaker 1: What do you think has been missing from football culturally
- 14:12Speaker 1: at UF over the last several years? And are you
- 14:14Speaker 1: seeing any signs that Summerall is bringing it back?
- 14:16Speaker 2: I know you like him a lot.
- 14:18Speaker 3: No, it's back. I mean, I can feel the energy.
- 14:21Speaker 3: You can just see it. You can see it in
- 14:23Speaker 3: the player's eyes. He's demanding. He's demanding. He's not going
- 14:27Speaker 3: to let you relax. He's not going to let you relax.
- 14:29Speaker 3: And he's bringing in talent that's going to sharpen the
- 14:32Speaker 3: talent that's already there. And if you can't hold up,
- 14:36Speaker 3: then you're gone. You're gone. You got to get out
- 14:38Speaker 3: of there. So, you know, I like what he's doing.
- 14:40Speaker 3: I like the way he's doing it. And if he continues,
- 14:45Speaker 3: I guarantee you, You'll see us playing for a national
- 14:48Speaker 3: championship very soon, very soon. And I want to tell
- 14:52Speaker 3: Coach right now, if he's out there listening, hey, Coach,
- 14:55Speaker 3: from Palm Beach County down to Dade County, get at me.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Get at me because I can get some of these
- 15:02Speaker 3: guys up there. All right.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Well, I know he's going to take you up on that.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Last question before I let you go. When you walk
- 15:09Speaker 1: on a Florida field on Saturday and you hear 90,000
- 15:13Speaker 1: people doing two.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Bits with you, What do you think that moment's going
- 15:16Speaker 2: to feel like?
- 15:19Speaker 3: It's going to make me want to get out there
- 15:20Speaker 3: and suit up. It's going to make me want to
- 15:22Speaker 3: put on that 18 jersey and tie my jersey up
- 15:25Speaker 3: in the front like I used to and put my
- 15:27Speaker 3: black sleeves on with my eye black. But I know
- 15:30Speaker 3: I won't be able to play, so I'm going to
- 15:32Speaker 3: try to get that energy level up and hopefully it
- 15:35Speaker 3: stays up for four quarters or however long the duration
- 15:38Speaker 3: of the game takes and we get out of there
- 15:40Speaker 3: with a W.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Well, listen, I am currently ready to run through a wall.
- 15:44Speaker 1: So my suggestion to Coach Summerall is to bring you
- 15:47Speaker 1: in the locker room and have you pump this team up.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I'm so excited for Saturday. I'm really excited UF is
- 15:53Speaker 1: honoring you. Appreciate you spending some time with us today.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Thank you, Allie. Thank you. And go Gator. Gator Nation,
- 16:00Speaker 3: I want to see you guys Saturday. I want to
- 16:02Speaker 3: see you guys Saturday.
- 16:04Speaker 1: All right, you guys heard it right there. Thank you
- 16:06Speaker 1: guys so much for tuning in. Big thank you to
- 16:08Speaker 1: PrizePix for all their support. Don't forget, download their app,
- 16:11Speaker 1: play our code HMA. If you play a $ 5 lineup
- 16:14Speaker 1: and you win, you'll get $ 150 in lineups instantly.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Thanks for tuning in, guys, and go Gators!
- 16:20Speaker 3: Go Gators!
