- 0:00Larry Wilson: Hi, this is Larry Wilson, and this is How to Talk to Humans.
- 0:04Larry Wilson: This is the podcast that shows you how to improve your communication skills.
- 0:10Larry Wilson: Are you looking to get a better job?
- 0:12Larry Wilson: Are you looking to find a relationship?
- 0:15Larry Wilson: Are you trying to do things in your life that have frustrated you and eluded you so far?
- 0:22Larry Wilson: I can show you so easily how to change that.
- 0:25Larry Wilson: Now, I can only do it with humans.
- 0:27Larry Wilson: If you're looking to deal with vampires, anomalies, extraterrestrials, this is not the joke.
- 0:33Larry Wilson: But if you're really looking to improve your communication skills, I can show you what I've learned in 40 years in the show business working with the biggest celebrities and superstars in the world.
- 0:47Larry Wilson: And their secrets are unbelievable.
- 0:52Larry Wilson: What I'm going to be teaching you during the course of this podcast every week are tools that you can use to communicate toward Signet.
- 1:05Larry Wilson: Hi, thanks for joining me again for part two of last week's show.
- 1:13Larry Wilson: There was so much I wanted to share with you, I didn't want to take up too much of your time.
- 1:20Larry Wilson: So here's all the good stuff that follows up the good stuff from part one.
- 1:28Larry Wilson: And for those of you who are late to the party, communication is human.
- 1:36Larry Wilson: That's great news.
- 1:37Larry Wilson: It's great news for you.
- 1:40Larry Wilson: It's great news because we're humans.
- 1:43Larry Wilson: And if you accept that, now I realize some people may object to that, same way other people may object to gravity or the seasons.
- 1:52Larry Wilson: You know, it's not fair that summer doesn't last all year.
- 1:56Larry Wilson: It's not fair that it gets cold in winter.
- 1:59Larry Wilson: Okay.
- 2:01Larry Wilson: But we have to play the cards we've been dealt here.
- 2:05Larry Wilson: And if in this world this is the way humans interact, it might be in our best interest to study it, practice the skills involved with it, develop an expertise at it so that we have something very few other people have.
- 2:28Larry Wilson: Expertise in communication.
- 2:31Larry Wilson: That's really all we're talking about here.
- 2:34Larry Wilson: And as you know, none of it's hard.
- 2:38Larry Wilson: None of it.
- 2:39Larry Wilson: None of it requires a college education.
- 2:42Larry Wilson: It requires you being able to speak and understand English well enough to understand what I'm saying.
- 2:49Larry Wilson: But I would be the first one to say there's probably people out there who don't speak English who are expert communicators in their own language.
- 2:57Larry Wilson: I cannot address that because English is really my primary language.
- 3:03Larry Wilson: I can speak a little bit of a couple other languages, but not the way I can speak in English.
- 3:08Larry Wilson: And that's what we're talking about here.
- 3:11Larry Wilson: We're all storytellers.
- 3:15Larry Wilson: So you better hone those skills.
- 3:17Larry Wilson: You better learn what appeals.
- 3:21Larry Wilson: And the wonderful part of this, the reason I say it's great news about AI, is if Homer could write this story, The Odyssey, 3,000 years ago, means anything we come up with now has to be in the same vein, the same tradition.
- 3:42Larry Wilson: All the Odyssey is, is a man who goes to war to defend his country, to defend his principles.
- 3:49Larry Wilson: We'll see what Christopher Nolan says.
- 3:52Larry Wilson: But he wants, when he's done and victorious, he wants to return home.
- 3:56Larry Wilson: And he does not have the luxury of airplanes or things like that.
- 4:00Larry Wilson: He has the luck, not really luxury, but he's required to use ships that rely on men to row them.
- 4:08Larry Wilson: Hundreds of men rowing to get home, thousands of miles.
- 4:13Larry Wilson: It takes him 20 years to get home.
- 4:16Larry Wilson: And everyone's telling his wife that he's dead.
- 4:20Larry Wilson: If he was alive, he'd be back.
- 4:22Larry Wilson: Well, we, the audience, whether we're listening to the poet Homer tell this story 3,000 years ago, or whether we're listening to the story retold a thousand years later at the time of the birth of Christ, or whether we've only learned it in the last few years, 3,000.
- 4:47Larry Wilson: We're listening to this, thinking, no, he's alive, he's alive.
- 4:51Larry Wilson: And his wife, the most beautiful woman in the world, but his wife refuses to give up on him.
- 5:01Larry Wilson: And his wife is saintly and stalwart, and she's she's beleaguered by suitors, hundreds of people who think if I marry her, I'll be king.
- 5:17Larry Wilson: And so it has nothing to do with love or how they feel about her.
- 5:22Larry Wilson: So this is this is all the stuff.
- 5:25Larry Wilson: Can you feel it?
- 5:27Larry Wilson: This is all stuff of a great story.
- 5:29Larry Wilson: I mean, an unbelievable story.
- 5:32Larry Wilson: And so we know, I hope you know by now, as I've tried to drill into you, if his aim is to get home, and he just jumps on a ship and they row home, and there's his wife, and then his wife.
- 5:48Larry Wilson: We the audience don't really enjoy that.
- 5:51Larry Wilson: We want drama.
- 5:53Larry Wilson: What does this mean?
- 5:54Larry Wilson: Where does drama come from?
- 5:56Larry Wilson: Conflict.
- 5:57Larry Wilson: Conflict.
- 5:59Larry Wilson: Now, some of you are saying, I'm not a screenwriter, I don't want to be a screenwriter.
- 6:03Larry Wilson: Uh, I'm not a book writer, I don't want to be no, no.
- 6:07Larry Wilson: But if you sell cars, there's a story to be told here.
- 6:14Larry Wilson: Because you might be able to say to a customer who comes in, if you're using Wilson method technique, you might ask them why they've come to you.
- 6:28Larry Wilson: And hopefully you're listening, you're using active listening.
- 6:33Larry Wilson: So when they say, Well, you know, I wanted a safe, reliable, cost-effective car for my daughter.
- 6:44Larry Wilson: How old is your daughter?
- 6:46Larry Wilson: My daughter's 19.
- 6:48Larry Wilson: Okay.
- 6:49Larry Wilson: And what does your daughter do?
- 6:51Larry Wilson: Does she drive a lot?
- 6:52Larry Wilson: Does she drive a lot?
- 6:53Larry Wilson: There's there's a lot of active listening for you to get information.
- 6:58Larry Wilson: They're telling you what story they want to hear.
- 7:02Larry Wilson: So that you can say, you know, it's interesting you should say this.
- 7:07Larry Wilson: Because I'm not asking you to lie.
- 7:10Larry Wilson: I'm hoping that you're able to use your personal real life experience to craft a story.
- 7:17Larry Wilson: The story might be: I have a friend who felt the same way, and he got his daughter the most expensive car that's laden with all these safety features.
- 7:29Larry Wilson: And his daughter didn't drive it.
- 7:32Larry Wilson: Why?
- 7:33Larry Wilson: Because it was too complicated.
- 7:35Larry Wilson: She couldn't figure out some of the electronics.
- 7:38Larry Wilson: Maybe that's part of the story.
- 7:41Larry Wilson: Until she found this car, that is the car you're representing at your car dealership.
- 7:48Larry Wilson: Maybe that's what this car has a lot of electronic elements, but not too many.
- 7:54Larry Wilson: It's simplified them, it's made the experience better for the driver.
- 8:01Larry Wilson: It's got a better interface.
- 8:03Larry Wilson: Maybe that's part of the story.
- 8:04Larry Wilson: Or maybe the story is maybe the story is more hair-raising.
- 8:09Larry Wilson: Maybe the story is uh they bought one of these cars from you.
- 8:14Larry Wilson: They weren't looking for safety, they were looking for good fuel economy, and they found it because this is a hybrid car.
- 8:21Larry Wilson: It uses both gasoline and electric.
- 8:23Larry Wilson: Maybe that's your story.
- 8:25Larry Wilson: And then there was a terrible snowstorm, and the person driving the car drove off a cliff and fell hundreds of feet and was unharmed because of all these safety features they didn't know about.
- 8:42Larry Wilson: And the construction of the maybe that's the story.
- 8:46Larry Wilson: It's a fantastic tale for someone to tell someone who's concerned about some of their body.
- 8:52Larry Wilson: So you see, it's not just about screenwriters, it's more obvious about screenwriters.
- 8:58Larry Wilson: They have to come up with something to engage us.
- 9:01Larry Wilson: But we're all concerned about the same things.
- 9:04Larry Wilson: And if you're employing empathy and you're listening, actively listening, you have a ton of information.
- 9:11Larry Wilson: You might make up a story on the spot.
- 9:14Larry Wilson: Or you might have several stories, you might have three different stories that all emphasize different things.
- 9:21Larry Wilson: But whatever they are, that person I told you about before, who was just imagining we were making this up, someone who has uh offers services or creates some goods or something, that person who felt like I shouldn't have to tell a story.
- 9:37Larry Wilson: I should just be able to say, look here.
- 9:38Larry Wilson: Yes, look here, it's fine.
- 9:40Larry Wilson: But the person who tells a story, they're always going to do more business because it's hardwired into our brains.
- 9:50Larry Wilson: We want those stories.
- 9:52Larry Wilson: And, you know, I I've mentioned before young screenwriters, there's always some young screenwriter who thinks, oh, I'm gonna blow everyone's mind.
- 10:02Larry Wilson: I'm gonna write an unhappy ending to this story.
- 10:06Larry Wilson: All young screenwriters think they're the first one to ever think of this.
- 10:10Larry Wilson: And sometimes they might be mildly successful.
- 10:15Larry Wilson: I can't think of one off the top of my head, but it's possible.
- 10:18Larry Wilson: But you want to see a film with a happy ending?
- 10:20Larry Wilson: Stream Rocky, Sylvester Stallone's breakthrough film.
- 10:24Larry Wilson: You'll see unbelievably powerful, well-crafted, simple story.
- 10:35Larry Wilson: Doesn't have to be big, complicated affair, doesn't have to be that at all.
- 10:39Larry Wilson: Rocky is so simple.
- 10:42Larry Wilson: He's a low-level boxer, he's a paluka who gets a chance at the heavyweight championship of the world.
- 10:53Larry Wilson: That's the whole story.
- 10:56Larry Wilson: Now, there are obviously other elements in there, but that's the whole story.
- 11:01Larry Wilson: I'm telling you, you will find yourself on the edge of your seat, and you may even find yourself yelling in excitement at the end of that film.
- 11:14Larry Wilson: Stallone, I don't know him, I've never met him, but he's a tremendous writer.
- 11:21Larry Wilson: Or was, I don't know if he's written anything recently, but boy, does he understand people, or he did when he wrote this, and I think it was probably very close to his heart, this film.
- 11:33Larry Wilson: And not because of the boxing.
- 11:35Larry Wilson: I don't know if he really ever boxed or not, but the idea of being nobody and getting a shot at being somebody that's a powerful, powerful story.
- 11:48Larry Wilson: And you can see it could be extrapolated in a lot of ways onto a lot of other situations, and it could easily be that has to do with your business.
- 12:03Larry Wilson: It could be that you came up with something very simple.
- 12:07Larry Wilson: And uh again, I'm not telling you to pretend or or say something that isn't true.
- 12:14Larry Wilson: I don't want that, but I think if you start to look at your real life experience through this lens of being able to share it with others as a story, you may say, Oh, yeah, I guess I'm sort of like the Rocky of uh, I'm gonna try and make up something absurd here, I don't know what it would be, of uh frozen yogurt.
- 12:39Larry Wilson: Maybe you cook or you created confections or something like this, and you came up with a fantastic recipe for frozen yogurt, and you opened a little frozen yogurt, maybe you couldn't even afford.
- 12:55Larry Wilson: I'm making all this up, so but maybe you couldn't even afford to rent a storefront.
- 13:01Larry Wilson: Maybe you just had a a rolling cart that you sold your frozen yogurt out, and maybe because this is this is what grips us when you show us the obstacles the hero has to overcome.
- 13:19Larry Wilson: That reaches into us, and you've got us now, because we've all had obstacles we've had to overcome.
- 13:31Larry Wilson: They're just different ones for everybody.
- 13:33Larry Wilson: For somebody, it might be learning to read if you have dyslexia, maybe that's the obstacle.
- 13:40Larry Wilson: Somebody else, it might be uh finding a group of people that you can be friends with, maybe that's the obstacle.
- 13:50Larry Wilson: Somebody else, it might be they need a million dollars to do some kind of deal, and that's the obstacle.
- 13:58Larry Wilson: But they're all the same.
- 14:00Larry Wilson: Do you see?
- 14:02Larry Wilson: It doesn't matter what the specifics are, the hero, and there should always be one person who's the hero, has a goal, something they want to achieve, and there are obstacles in the way.
- 14:15Larry Wilson: So when you present this as a frozen yogurt stand, maybe the city shuts you down right when you start to get successful because you don't have the proper licensing for a cart, and then maybe a big yogurt franchise opens nearby where you usually have your cart.
- 14:35Larry Wilson: Maybe there's a ton of, maybe there's stuff you need, maybe you need a special kind of milk to make the yogurt active.
- 14:43Larry Wilson: But you can see how if you look at it, there are real obstacles in the path to you achieving your goal.
- 14:54Larry Wilson: That's great storytelling.
- 14:56Larry Wilson: And AI will never be able to do this.
- 15:01Larry Wilson: It can't.
- 15:02Larry Wilson: It's not a person, it's not a thing, it's a machine.
- 15:06Larry Wilson: It's like saying, Oh, I hope my car can make a really nice spaghetti sauce.
- 15:12Larry Wilson: Well, it can't.
- 15:13Larry Wilson: It's just a car.
- 15:14Larry Wilson: What are you crazy?
- 15:16Larry Wilson: It's just a car.
- 15:16Larry Wilson: I mean, gee, I really hope my telephone can um make this new girl I met fall in love with me.
- 15:26Larry Wilson: It can't.
- 15:28Larry Wilson: Now, these machines can imitate stuff if we teach them, but they're not alive, they're not humans.
- 15:38Larry Wilson: That's our ace in the hole.
- 15:41Larry Wilson: That's our incredible, undeniable power.
- 15:45Larry Wilson: We're the humans.
- 15:46Larry Wilson: And this incredible stuff I saw last night in this film Pomegranate, it lives or dies on the storytelling.
- 15:54Larry Wilson: Young person, I'm saying he's young, I'm just guessing he must be, who created this, did an extraordinary thing.
- 16:01Larry Wilson: I mean, he really think about the first men to walk on the moon.
- 16:07Larry Wilson: Yeah, that's the equivalent of what this guy did.
- 16:10Larry Wilson: Is it perfect?
- 16:11Larry Wilson: No, it's not perfect yet.
- 16:13Larry Wilson: But I'm telling you, it's going to improve in leaps and bounds.
- 16:17Larry Wilson: It's going to be.
- 16:20Larry Wilson: It's going to be transformative.
- 16:22Larry Wilson: But his I suspect his storytelling is good.
- 16:27Larry Wilson: I suspect he himself sees there, there are a lot of suggestions in that film, Pomegranate, showing how much he understands the importance of having a hero, having a goal, and the obstacles to getting there.
- 16:44Larry Wilson: He clearly understood it.
- 16:45Larry Wilson: I don't know if it's consciously he understands it.
- 16:48Larry Wilson: You know, there's some people who are storytellers who just work by instinct.
- 16:52Larry Wilson: But when they hit those points, that's when they're successful.
- 16:57Larry Wilson: And I'm positive that this guy's storytelling is going to get better and better and better because he's human.
- 17:07Larry Wilson: And there was almost a suggestion in pomegranate that that was the thing that was missing from these artificial experiences.
- 17:18Larry Wilson: It was almost self-referential.
- 17:21Larry Wilson: Like the director writer was talking about what he was doing and how he felt about it.
- 17:29Larry Wilson: I may be reading too much into it, but that's how it felt to me.
- 17:32Larry Wilson: You'll see if you go and look at it.
- 17:34Larry Wilson: It's free online.
- 17:36Larry Wilson: If you look up pomegranate, I'm sure it's there.
- 17:40Larry Wilson: And like I say, in another couple weeks, it'll be a lot of people be talking about.
- 17:46Larry Wilson: So the point is that we humans have the ability to tell the stories.
- 17:56Larry Wilson: If you're a screenwriter or a fiction writer, or even a non-fiction writer, I guess, still up to you.
- 18:05Larry Wilson: If you're in business, still the same thing.
- 18:10Larry Wilson: You're still a fiction, I guess.
- 18:14Larry Wilson: Well, I'm hoping you're not telling people stories that are untrue and pretending they're real.
- 18:19Larry Wilson: Oh, yes, I'm a congressional medal of honor winner.
- 18:22Larry Wilson: Please don't do that if it's not true.
- 18:25Larry Wilson: If you are a congressional medal of honor winner, what a fantastic tale you have to tell.
- 18:31Larry Wilson: But that's, you know, that's so obvious.
- 18:34Larry Wilson: That's like saying Helen of Troy, most beautiful woman in the world.
- 18:38Larry Wilson: That's so much the peak experience, you know.
- 18:44Larry Wilson: It doesn't have to be.
- 18:45Larry Wilson: And that's part of the lesson of Rocky, is that nothing as grand as Congressional Medal of Honor winner.
- 18:53Larry Wilson: But you'll see.
- 18:54Larry Wilson: You'll see with all these things.
- 18:57Larry Wilson: But everything we talk about here, honing your ability to communicate, this is the future.
- 19:06Larry Wilson: This really is the future.
- 19:08Larry Wilson: And you've heard me talk about, I think there's a divide of people who are bad at communicating, and you see them on TikTok and stuff going, hey man, I mean, just like, I don't know, I mean, whatever.
- 19:23Larry Wilson: And you think, I don't really know what you're talking about.
- 19:26Larry Wilson: Well, versus people like me.
- 19:32Larry Wilson: I think my communication is very, very clear.
- 19:38Larry Wilson: I'm sure it could be better, but I strive always to keep improving it.
- 19:44Larry Wilson: But I think it's pretty clear at this juncture.
- 19:50Larry Wilson: I should also mention another precept of Wilson method that I often harp on is that you must ask for what you want.
- 20:02Larry Wilson: And this could not be more apropos than in regards to dealing with AI.
- 20:09Larry Wilson: It's not a person.
- 20:11Larry Wilson: Yes, it may be loaded with a whole bunch of information, but it's not we know because of our lives of growing up things that real people do when we talk to them.
- 20:23Larry Wilson: Unspoken things, semiotic information they may convey with a raise of an eyebrow or a downturn or downturn of the mouth or per all these little tiny things.
- 20:38Larry Wilson: Yes, AI can learn those and mimic them, but it's not a human being.
- 20:43Larry Wilson: So it's very important that we not assume that other people know what we're thinking, what we're trying to say.
- 20:54Larry Wilson: It's our job.
- 20:55Larry Wilson: It's our job to practice these tools to make it almost impossible to misunderstand us.
- 21:07Larry Wilson: Now, we're talking about AI, it may just have a blind spot about something because somebody didn't program it with that, and that's really beholden on you then to ask it.
- 21:22Larry Wilson: That's what those prompts are.
- 21:24Larry Wilson: You're asking it.
- 21:26Larry Wilson: I want you to blah blah blah, whatever it is you're asking.
- 21:31Larry Wilson: The clearer you are, the better you're able to paint a picture with words, the more successful you'll be, the better the result.
- 21:42Larry Wilson: Doesn't mean you have to hit a home run every time you're bat.
- 21:48Larry Wilson: How about just a bunch of singles?
- 21:51Larry Wilson: You give it a prompt, it returns something.
- 21:55Larry Wilson: Now you go back and say, that was pretty good, but I want it to be more like a manual.
- 22:00Larry Wilson: You clarify and clarify.
- 22:03Larry Wilson: And every time you keep going, I think the computer people call this iterations, but you might just call it versions of whatever it is you asked it to do.
- 22:16Larry Wilson: But the good news is, unlike a human who might get frustrated with you and say, hey, I've given you five versions if your communication makes what you're asking for.
- 22:27Larry Wilson: And I'll tell you something.
- 22:30Larry Wilson: Perfect example to wrap this up.
- 22:34Larry Wilson: Perfect example in real life.
- 22:36Larry Wilson: Many of you know, I'm the founder of a nonprofit here in northern Nevada that's devoted to fostering children's literacy.
- 22:47Larry Wilson: I have this crazy idea that it might be a good thing if kids learn to read.
- 22:52Larry Wilson: And everywhere in this country, they're not learning very well.
- 22:58Larry Wilson: Nevada's way down the list.
- 23:00Larry Wilson: There's so many kids in Nevada who are not reading at their grade level.
- 23:07Larry Wilson: It's dreadful.
- 23:08Larry Wilson: And of course, like anything else, it's not hard to do if you have someone to help you, to mentor you, to assist you.
- 23:17Larry Wilson: So I started this nonprofit called Education Renaissance of Nevada Initiative.
- 23:24Larry Wilson: We've been doing this big event called Spellbinders every year for the last 12 years.
- 23:30Larry Wilson: This year we'll be doing it first week of October, and it's free for the entire community.
- 23:34Larry Wilson: It's fantastic.
- 23:36Larry Wilson: But I have more board members this year who've been extremely helpful.
- 23:40Larry Wilson: And one of them said, you know what?
- 23:42Larry Wilson: We need to have a gala as a fundraiser, a dinner, special dinner, where we're able to raise money and talk about what we do.
- 23:50Larry Wilson: So I said, great.
- 23:51Larry Wilson: So we've put together this gala, which is September 8th.
- 23:54Larry Wilson: It's a five-course dinner, and then I'm bringing in these gold medal-winning close-up artists to perform at people's tables.
- 24:03Larry Wilson: And then there's going to be a whole special auction of some wild things that we've brought together from a bunch of different sources.
- 24:14Larry Wilson: It's going to be incredible.
- 24:15Larry Wilson: But we have to sell tickets to it to raise money.
- 24:18Larry Wilson: And the tickets are not inexpensive.
- 24:21Larry Wilson: Some of my board members have been stymied by this.
- 24:27Larry Wilson: They've sent out emails, and I've said this is great sending emails.
- 24:31Larry Wilson: I've managed to sell a number of tickets by asking people to purchase them.
- 24:39Larry Wilson: I mean, our nonprofit is a 501c3 nonprofit, which means that if you were to buy a ticket to the gala, it's tax deductible.
- 24:53Larry Wilson: I'm supposed to say to the fullest extent allowed by law.
- 24:57Larry Wilson: So my experience has been that it's not, uh please don't misunderstand, it's not the most efficient way.
- 25:04Larry Wilson: I understand sending out an email to 7,000 people who follow you on social media, that's reaching more people.
- 25:14Larry Wilson: I'm just not sure it's as effective when I speak one-on-one to people, or one-on-two, or one-on-three.
- 25:24Larry Wilson: They understand more of what we're trying to do with this nonprofit.
- 25:28Larry Wilson: They understand why we need money.
- 25:30Larry Wilson: They understand we're trying to raise money.
- 25:34Larry Wilson: And so we're putting together this spectacular evening, this gala, that will be really, I think, uh, it may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
- 25:45Larry Wilson: And that's when people seem to respond to me and say, okay, sign me up for two tickets right away.
- 25:54Larry Wilson: And I say, thank you very much.
- 25:57Larry Wilson: It's because I've asked for what I want.
- 26:01Larry Wilson: It's not just me telling them about the gala and crossing my fingers and hoping, it's me telling them, we really need your support.
- 26:10Larry Wilson: Here's what you can do.
- 26:12Larry Wilson: I really would like you to buy a couple of tickets.
- 26:17Larry Wilson: A woman I spoke to last night, I think, was talking about buying five tickets.
- 26:22Larry Wilson: And once she does, I'm going to reach back out to thank her and ask her if there's some more friends of hers who are also interested in helping children learn to read.
- 26:37Larry Wilson: Because if they are, maybe she can get them and they'll all be at one table and we'll have a special thing just at their table.
- 26:44Larry Wilson: There's all kinds of things we can do.
- 26:47Larry Wilson: But it's so simple, it works, and you can do it.
- 26:52Larry Wilson: It's as simple as that.
- 26:54Larry Wilson: To ask for what you want.
- 26:57Larry Wilson: And I hadn't planned to say that, but it's funny that it sort of comes full circle around you have to ask AI for what you want.
- 27:11Larry Wilson: You have to be very clear, very specific.
- 27:16Larry Wilson: You can't be vague or hemming or hawing.
