- 0:01Good morning and a warm welcome to your show,
- 0:04Sunny Mornings in Boston. I'm your host, Melissa,
- 0:09and it's Thursday, May 21st. You'll be interested
- 0:14to know, 99 years ago, today, in 1927, Charles
- 0:20Lindford flew solo nonstop across the Atlantic
- 0:23in his single -engine Spirit of St. Louis, landing
- 0:26in Paris after an unprecedented trans -oceanic
- 0:30flight. His daring achievement demonstrated the
- 0:33potential of aviation for long -distance travel
- 0:36and inspired public confidence in commercial
- 0:39flight and technological progress. So now you
- 0:43know. And now, it's time for the weather report.
- 0:50This morning, it's cloudy and feels like 59 degrees
- 0:55with 6 mile per hour wind. The sunset will take
- 0:59place at 8 .03. and it will rise again tomorrow
- 1:02at 515. It looks like we're in for some mostly
- 1:06cloudy skies today, with a high near 65 and a
- 1:10calm northeast breeze around 6 miles per hour.
- 1:14If you're inland, it will hit a high of 65. Tonight,
- 1:19expect partly cloudy skies with a low around
- 1:2346 and light winds around 5 miles per hour. The
- 1:28near -shore GUI at Cape Cod Bay reads 56 degrees
- 1:32for the water temperature. Looking ahead in the
- 1:36weather. Friday will be sunny with a high near
- 1:4066 in late east winds of 3 to 8 miles per hour.
- 1:44A slight chance of rain develops Saturday afternoon
- 1:47with highs near 64. Then rain showers are likely

- 1:57hour. Memorial Day brings a chance of showers
- 2:00with highs near 69 and lighter north winds. And
- 2:04showers may linger into Monday morning, with

- 2:43Sunny Morning sent you. In local news, with less
- 2:49than a month to go before voting on Mayor Michelle
- 2:52Wu's fiscal year 27 budget plan, Boston City
- 2:56Councilors are feeling the pressure from various
- 2:58sides. A letter from the mayor's legal advisors
- 3:02reminded them of their limited powers, while
- 3:05a town meeting in Roxbury heard pleas to reverse
- 3:07proposed cuts in her tightest budget since taking
- 3:11office in 2021. The proposed cuts affect youth
- 3:15jobs, food relief, and programs within the Boston
- 3:18Public Schools, alongside some funding for the
- 3:21police and fire departments. District 4 Counselor
- 3:25Brian Worrell noted that many advocacy groups
- 3:27are uniting around shared values, voicing concerns
- 3:31about the budget's impact on their communities.
- 3:38Now on to sports. LeBron James is reportedly
- 3:43unlikely to accept a minimum salary, which affects
- 3:46some suitors more than others. Even at 41 years
- 3:50old, James will command a significant salary,
- 3:53potentially eliminating several teams from contention.
- 3:57The idea of LeBron James playing for a minimum
- 3:59salary seemed like a fantasy for most of his
- 4:02career. While he is worth much more, his age
- 4:06and desire to contend for a championship complicate
- 4:09matters. Teams capable of competing typically
- 4:12do not have the funds available to pay him appropriately.
- 4:16James is the highest -paid player in National
- 4:19Basketball Association history and has earned
- 4:22substantial amounts off the court. Though anything
- 4:25he earns now is pocket change by his standards,
- 4:28interested parties should not expect a discount.
- 4:31Insider Jake Fisher stated that James taking
- 4:34a minimum salary does not sound like that is
- 4:37actually in the cards at all. James has not taken
- 4:40a substantial pay cut since leaving the Miami
- 4:43Heat in 2014. For some suitors, this news is
- 4:48mildly disappointing, while for others, it removes
- 4:51them from serious contention for James' services.
- 4:55The New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets likely
- 4:58cannot afford him, as both teams are near their
- 5:01salary limits. The Golden State Warriors and
- 5:04Cleveland Cavaliers have challenging paths to
- 5:07securing him. exploring sign -and -trade options
- 5:10to create salary space. If money is a significant
- 5:14factor, the Los Angeles Clippers have a potential
- 5:17path to $28 million in cap space in James' current
- 5:22market. The Los Angeles Lakers hold the advantage,
- 5:25with full bird rights allowing them to pay James
- 5:28up to the maximum amount. How they will allocate
- 5:32their potential $48 million in cap space remains
- 5:35uncertain. but it will dictate their ability
- 5:38to retain him. In a perfect world, the Lakers
- 5:42would have liked to keep James at a discount,
- 5:44but it seems they will need to invest real financial
- 5:47resources to do so. In local sports, the Red
- 5:51Sox completed a sweep of Kansas City last night,
- 5:55beating the Royals 4 -3 at Kauffman Stadium.
- 6:00Connelly Early was sharp on the mound, striking
- 6:03out 5 -over -6 in the third innings. while Jaron
- 6:07Duran went deep with two hits and two RBIs. Boston
- 6:13has now won three straight and four of their
- 6:15last five to improve to 22 -27. They're back
- 6:20at Fenway Saturday to face Tampa Bay, with Peyton
- 6:23Tall taking the mound at 4 -10. The Sox have
- 6:27real momentum heading into this series, and these
- 6:30next few games at home are crucial as they climb
- 6:33back into the L -East picture. On the injury
- 6:37front, Garrett Crochet threw two innings in the
- 6:40bullpen Wednesday and said his shoulder felt
- 6:42strong. He's working back from a three -week
- 6:45absence and could see a rehab appearance within
- 6:48the next week or so. When he returns, the front
- 6:52office will have some tough decisions to make.
- 6:54The rotation's been stellar this month with a
- 6:573 .00 era, but Brian Baio has been brutal at
- 7:029 .68. Over on the basketball side, the Celtics
- 7:07are ramping up their pre -draft process, checking
- 7:10out Cincinnati forward Bava Miller. The 6 '10
- 7:14Spanish prospect has intriguing length and switchability
- 7:18on defense, though his outside shot needs work.
- 7:23In top news, Elon Musk -led SpaceX has filed
- 7:28publicly for a stock listing amid its ambitions
- 7:31in artificial intelligence. The company is seeking
- 7:34a valuation of $1 trillion. On Wednesday, SpaceX
- 7:39filed for an initial public offering, taking
- 7:42the way for one of the most highly anticipated
- 7:44listings of the year. This move would subject
- 7:48the privately held company to new scrutiny from
- 7:50public investors and regulators. Founded in 2002,
- 7:56SpaceX builds and operates spacecraft, including
- 7:59thousands of satellites for its Starlink Internet
- 8:02service. Musk confirmed SpaceX's IPO plans for
- 8:062026 and its pursuit of a $1 trillion valuation
- 8:10on his social platform X. In business news, Vox's
- 8:16sale marks the end of an era for a once booming
- 8:19form of digital media. Here's how it all came
- 8:23undone. Companies like Busby, Vice, and Vox were
- 8:27once valued at billions of dollars. But shifting
- 8:30audiences and declines in advertising have sent
- 8:33their values plummeting. For digital media companies
- 8:36that relied on social media buzz and venture
- 8:39capital hype, the rise was rapid, and the fall
- 8:43just as swift. Ten years ago, companies like
- 8:46Vox Media, BuzzFeed, and Vice attracted major
- 8:50investment with valuations topping $1 billion.
- 8:54placing them in a rarefied space in an industry
- 8:57where fortunes were largely declining. In crypto
- 9:00movement, Bitcoin is up 1 % to $78 ,000. Ethereum
- 9:07is up 1 % to just over $2 ,000. And HexRP is
- 9:13up 1 % to $1 .38. Moving on to a more local vibe.
- 9:21and our community spotlight on health and wellness.

- 10:00morning sent you by. And now, back to the show.
- 10:06Let's talk tech. Anthropic has announced that
- 10:10it is set to achieve its first profitable quarter,
- 10:13with plans to more than double revenue to around
- 10:16$10 .9 billion in its second quarter. The company
- 10:21is expected to deliver an operating profit for
- 10:23the first time, according to the Wall Street
- 10:25Journal. This significant milestone puts it in
- 10:29a favorable position against its chief competitor,
- 10:32OpenAI. However, profitability may not be sustained
- 10:37throughout the year due to substantial compute
- 10:39costs. The startup has gained popularity, particularly
- 10:43with its chatbot, Claude, and is diversifying
- 10:47its customer base. This announcement coincides
- 10:50with news of OpenAI's potential initial public
- 10:54offering. And in entertainment news, Jeff Probst
- 11:01accidentally revealed the winner and loser of
- 11:04the Survivor 50 firemaking competition, which
- 11:07determines who makes it to the final three before
- 11:10the segment aired. During Wednesday night's finale,
- 11:14Aubrey Bracco won the final immunity challenge
- 11:16and chose to send Riza Vilovic and Jonathan Young
- 11:20to the fire -making competition. After CBS aired
- 11:24footage of her decision, the episode mistakenly
- 11:27cut to Jeff Probst on stage in front of a live
- 11:30studio audience in Los Angeles. Probst announced
- 11:33that Vilovic was the last member of the Season
- 11:3650 jury, noticing the confused reactions from
- 11:39the audience. Siri Fields, a fan -favorite contestant,
- 11:43awkwardly reminded him that fire -making had
- 11:46not been shown before the commercial break. Propst
- 11:50humorously addressed the mishap, saying, I love
- 11:53live television. Well, alrighty, folks, it's
- 11:57time for the quote of the day. And today, our
- 12:01quote comes from the American aviator and author
- 12:04Anne Morrow Lindbergh. And she said, To fly as
- 12:09fast as thought. To anywhere, that is, is not
- 12:12a dream, but a possibility, for aviation has
- 12:16shown us that the sky is not the limit. And that's
- 12:21a wrap for this morning. You can check out our
- 12:24Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok for some captivating
- 12:28aerial videos with local news and the weather
- 12:31reports. Have an amazing day, my good friends.
- 12:35We'll see you tomorrow with another episode of
