- 0:00Speaker 1: Someone was paying attention last week when Jim Rose was
- 0:03Speaker 1: making his little biting remarks about this week we were
- 0:06Speaker 1: supposed to play Tennessee, but now we're not. We're playing
- 0:10Speaker 1: Bowling Green instead. Someone picked up on what you were
- 0:12Speaker 1: saying there, Jim.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Well, Jim, in six years, Nebraska football announced that the
- 0:19Speaker 2: home-and-home series with Notre Dame has been canceled in favor
- 0:24Speaker 2: of Nebraska playing St. Mary's of the Plains High.
- 0:28Speaker 3: School because, well.
- 0:30Speaker 2: We really don't like playing with.
- 0:32Speaker 4: The big boys.
- 0:33Speaker 3: All right.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Actually, St.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Mary of the Plains is an NAIA school in Dodge City, Kansas.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Time for the News Radio 1110 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Oscar Buzz edition. Sean Callahan and Jim Rose.
- 0:46Speaker 3: How do I know that? Because I broadcast a game
- 0:48Speaker 3: from St. Mary of the Plains, which also has the
- 0:50Speaker 3: distinction of producing Danny Nee. Quit bragging. He got his
- 0:54Speaker 3: degree from St. Mary of the Plains.
- 0:55Speaker 4: All right.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Sean O, Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the schedule. How
- 0:59Speaker 3: did this all happen?
- 1:01Speaker 4: Well, Notre Dame has some openings here. They had the
- 1:04Speaker 4: USC series for several years, and that got canceled, and
- 1:10Speaker 4: now they've reset that series for the future years. But
- 1:13Speaker 4: I just think they have some availability. Nebraska had some availability,
- 1:18Speaker 4: and they were able to work it out. You think
- 1:20Speaker 4: about the history of that series. Tom Osborne was never
- 1:24Speaker 4: a head coach against Notre Dame. Bob Devaney had one
- 1:27Speaker 4: game in his career coaching against Notre Dame. Frank Solich
- 1:30Speaker 4: had the two. But for the history of these two programs,
- 1:33Speaker 4: other than the stretch of 11 straight years in the
- 1:36Speaker 4: 1910s and 20s where they played, they haven't been able
- 1:40Speaker 4: to play that much for obviously various reasons. and it's
- 1:43Speaker 4: great to see Troy Dan and Notre Dame get this
- 1:46Speaker 4: thing worked out.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it'll be great for the fans. They're playing here
- 1:49Speaker 3: in Lincoln in 2032 and then in South Bend on 2033.
- 1:53Speaker 3: I guess I'm going to have to go to that one.
- 1:55Speaker 3: But the reason that Nebraska and Notre Dame stopped playing
- 1:58Speaker 3: was because of the KKK. The Ku Klux Klan was
- 2:02Speaker 3: very big in Nebraska in the early part of the
- 2:04Speaker 3: 20th century, and they hated Catholics as much as they
- 2:07Speaker 3: hated Jews and blacks. And they used to harass the
- 2:10Speaker 3: Notre Dame players endlessly, and the Notre Dame people, when
- 2:14Speaker 3: they came to town, finally, Newt Rockne said, we're done
- 2:16Speaker 3: with this. So after 1925, they ended that series that
- 2:20Speaker 3: had gone 10 years, and they started up a new
- 2:22Speaker 3: series with USC that lasted all the way through to
- 2:26Speaker 3: last year. Yeah, that's the history of the Nebraska-Notre Dame series,
- 2:30Speaker 3: although we did play him in the 1940s when, frankly,
- 2:32Speaker 3: he was dominating everybody. But we beat the Four Horsemen
- 2:36Speaker 3: of Notre Dame twice back in the 1920s. Visit about
- 2:40Speaker 3: North Dakota.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Now.
- 2:42Speaker 3: They do have some interesting receivers, and we talked about
- 2:46Speaker 3: Jerry Kaminsky, their quarterback, who's had some real success through
- 2:49Speaker 3: the first three games. He's thrown for over 800 yards.
- 2:52Speaker 3: He's hitting 70% of his passes. But it looks to
- 2:55Speaker 3: me like Dang Dang, who's one of their better receivers, 6'4,
- 2:59Speaker 3: 210-pound guy. That's a Big Ten body.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Dang, dang, 11 catches for 159 yards. Their leading receiver
- 3:08Speaker 4: is Corey Tye with 12 catches for 274. He has
- 3:12Speaker 4: four touchdowns with a long of 74 yards. So he's
- 3:16Speaker 4: more their number one. But, yeah, this is an offense, Jim,
- 3:19Speaker 4: that is averaging 50 points a game and 540 yards,
- 3:24Speaker 4: ranks second in yards in FCS, third in points. and 288.7
- 3:30Speaker 4: passing yards per game. So this is going to be
- 3:32Speaker 4: a test. The good news is for Nebraska, the secondary
- 3:35Speaker 4: is the strength, but this will be a test for
- 3:38Speaker 4: the pass rush. The offensive line for North Dakota has
- 3:42Speaker 4: not allowed very many pressures. Their left tackle, Trey Staden
- 3:46Speaker 4: from Millard West, has allowed one pressure in three games.
- 3:50Speaker 4: on the quarterback. So there's got to be a nice
- 3:52Speaker 4: test here for Nebraska. And they punt it well, too,
- 3:55Speaker 4: if you stop them. They lead FCS football in net
- 3:58Speaker 4: punting right now at 48.8 yards per punt.
- 4:02Speaker 3: And they haven't had to punt a lot either. Let's
- 4:04Speaker 3: visit about Trey Staden. A lot of Nebraska fans are
- 4:07Speaker 3: pretty upset that he's not here. He's an NFL prospect,
- 4:10Speaker 3: and we're talking a high, high NFL draft prospect. Let's
- 4:15Speaker 3: walk back to his high school days at Millard West.
- 4:18Speaker 3: And how do you miss him? Now, he was skinny,
- 4:20Speaker 3: but he was tall. How do you miss that guy
- 4:23Speaker 3: if you're Nebraska?
- 4:25Speaker 4: Well, in his fifth year, he was a tight end
- 4:27Speaker 4: in high school. And it's kind of a Dakota formula.
- 4:31Speaker 4: They were able to sit on these guys for four
- 4:34Speaker 4: or five years, develop them, and turn them into guys
- 4:37Speaker 4: like this. And he wasn't really on a lot of
- 4:39Speaker 4: radars at that point because he wasn't a true tackle.
- 4:43Speaker 4: I think he went to North Dakota initially as a
- 4:45Speaker 4: tight end. and then grew into a tackle. It's kind
- 4:47Speaker 4: of like Eric Ingersoll now, the big-bodied kid. He's tied
- 4:52Speaker 4: in right now, but had that kind of body where
- 4:54Speaker 4: he just grew into being a tackle. And that's just
- 4:57Speaker 4: going to happen. I think the development model is different
- 5:00Speaker 4: at the FCS level because teams can take more chances
- 5:03Speaker 4: on kids like that. We're now in Power 4 football.
- 5:07Speaker 4: There's a lot more pressure to take a type of
- 5:09Speaker 4: kid that is going to be developed and ready to
- 5:11Speaker 4: go immediately just because of the nature of the type
- 5:15Speaker 4: of players you have to have now to play at
- 5:17Speaker 4: the Power 4 level.
- 5:18Speaker 3: So in your crystal ball, Sean, you've been watching high
- 5:23Speaker 3: school football longer than anybody. In your crystal ball, who's
- 5:27Speaker 3: the Trace Thayden in Nebraska in the year 2026? Who's
- 5:31Speaker 3: the kid that really, really is under the radar but
- 5:35Speaker 3: has physical attributes who could conceivably grow into that kind
- 5:39Speaker 3: of a player here?
- 5:41Speaker 4: Oh, gosh, you're putting me on the spot. But, like,
- 5:44Speaker 4: Bryce Vignes from Papillion is a really good lineman, and
- 5:47Speaker 4: he's going to North Dakota State. He had Kansas State
- 5:51Speaker 4: and some other offers at one point. I don't know
- 5:53Speaker 4: what happened there if, like, He just wanted to go
- 5:55Speaker 4: to North Dakota State, but that's a kid that's leaving
- 5:57Speaker 4: the area to go to one of the Dakotas schools.
- 6:01Speaker 4: And I could see him being a really good player
- 6:03Speaker 4: up there. A lot of people think he is the
- 6:04Speaker 4: best overall offensive lineman in the city. He's not maybe
- 6:10Speaker 4: as tall as Matt Erickson, doesn't have the arm length,
- 6:13Speaker 4: but he's got all the other intangibles. So that's a
- 6:17Speaker 4: guy to watch, I think, from Papillion, Bryce Vignes.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Of course, you and I both love that kid out
- 6:21Speaker 3: of Grand Island Central Catholic. Owen Price could become a really,
- 6:27Speaker 3: really good football player. He's going to be a four-star.
- 6:30Speaker 3: He ain't flying under the radar, but man, that kid,
- 6:32Speaker 3: he is something else. All right, big guy. That's why
- 6:35Speaker 3: they call him the KFB Husker Info Strongman. Stuff like that.
- 6:38Speaker 3: We can throw him curveballs when he still hits them
- 6:40Speaker 3: out of the ballpark.
