Transcript
- 0:01So before we started recording, me and Quincy was talking about well, actually,
- 0:05Quincy mentioned his vinyl collection and how it's been growing, and I was
- 0:09mentioning that I had seen his stories that he's been grabbing a lot more vinyl,
- 0:13and it made me think, like, because I don't really collect hip
- 0:16hop at all as far as vinyl goes, Like I got a couple like
- 0:19I got Illmatic. I got the Illmatic with the orchestra. My brother gifted
- 0:24that to me. I got Kendrick. Hip hop is dead. I got
- 0:30damn yeah, pick Hendrick, And I think that's it. Honestly, I
- 0:32don't even think I got no more hip hop besides that. But the reason
- 0:37why I was thinking, like, dang, maybe I need to because I
- 0:42listened obviously, I'm listening to hip hop all the time on my phone,
- 0:45you know what I'm saying in my car everything. But I'm thinking, like,
- 0:49bro, like collecting the hip hop vinyl might be like a future play,
- 0:53like as far as like when I get a little older, is something
- 0:56that I might want to listen to. Also my son, his kids,
- 1:00my daughter's kids, you know what I mean. Like if I if I
- 1:03collect this stuff, that's dope to me, and like when that time comes
- 1:07and I'm a little older and they rifling through the record player collection, you
- 1:11know what I'm saying, I mean the vinyl collection, and they you know,
- 1:14they could find like all the all the dope stuff that I used to
- 1:15listen to. Not only that, and one thing, like I said,
- 1:19I got my post Vinus behind me. They're never gonna know your tastes and
- 1:23music until they go through your collection. And I don't think that's ever gonna
- 1:27matter until they cares for them to go through your collection, because it's theirs.
- 1:32Like I said, when I went through my post collection, I thought
- 1:34he had all Spanish shit. See the shit he has. He has like
- 1:38every guns and roses. He has all these old soul like in the eighties,
- 1:42ninth like even the seventies, like jazz, Like he was so big
- 1:46in the jazz and I never knew that. It never took time to appreciate
- 1:49that until like he went through his collection. I was like, damn,
- 1:53now I get it why I like this music so much. And then on
- 1:56the other side of it, the way hip hop is gone and chen years,
- 2:00who knows where hip hop is even gonna be, So you know what
- 2:02I'm saying, like, you don't hear a lot of funk anymore coming out.
- 2:07You don't hear a lot of you know, Patty label signed in music
- 2:10anymore, you know what I'm saying. So like from a standpoint of just
- 2:15where hip hop will be, Like, yeah, man, I definitely collect
- 2:19hip hop albums. Like I was saying before we booted up. You know,
- 2:23one of the things that I noticed about some of the hip hop albums
- 2:27I have, not all of them because let me get let's get it,
- 2:29you know, for real, like Kanye J, Cole jay Z. Some
- 2:32of the albums I got from them, I know for a fact they're timeless,
- 2:36They're gonna be played repeatedly. But there are some albums that it's like,
- 2:40you know, they're kind of for the time, you know what I'm
- 2:44saying, They're not really. Let me ask you a question, what is
- 2:46your approach when you select the viney of the purchase. Is it because it's
- 2:52one of your favorite or you consider it a classic, or because you know
- 2:54it's something that you should have in your collection or for me other For me,
- 3:00it's usually like something that's like I enjoyed this full project. You know
- 3:05what I'm saying, or it's a classic project like I've recently got Nelly country
- 3:09grammar. You know what I'm saying, you know, And like, for
- 3:14me, let's be one hundred percent honest. Not every song on that album
- 3:17I rock with, but it's a classic album. However, there are some
- 3:22songs way more dope than bad though exactly. Oh yeah, for sure.
- 3:27Album it has a couple of them that are kind of wag, but it's
- 3:30pretty solid all the way through. But then there's something like but then there's
- 3:32something bad real quick. But then there's something like college dropout where I can
- 3:37let that play through every time, never miss a song, and enjoy the
- 3:40entire project. And so that's like I gotta have that, you know what
- 3:44I mean. For me, it's kind of like it has to like it
- 3:47has to be a great album, or it has to include a song that
- 3:53to me is like an all timer, like a song that I always But
- 3:55that's the point I want. I made with Vinyls. You can't sit on
- 3:59the couch and hit next you know what I'm saying. You gotta get up,
- 4:03put it on the next line, you get the next line. So
- 4:05for me, the goal is what is something I can let ride that.
- 4:10Yeah, the only time I'm getting up. It's a flip it right,
- 4:13exactly exactly kind of going off that A new audition album that I copped was
- 4:19one. I mean, a new edition vinyl that I copped was one that
- 4:21was like that where I copped it for a couple of songs. But when
- 4:26I was young and heard those songs, I never had the album and I
- 4:30never heard the album, you know what I'm saying. It was that first
- 4:32album they did with Johnny Gil Can you Stand the Rain? If it is
- 4:36in Love? Bro? That that intro, if it Isn't Love is top
- 4:42five to me, you know what I'm saying. And no, I'm lying,
- 4:46if it isn't Love wasn't on that. I think if it isn't Love
- 4:48was on the album before and Johnny Gil was with them. It was just
- 4:51yeah, it was the comeback album after they already had Johnny Gil. But
- 4:57they were like kind of like in that in between phase where they weren't young,
- 5:00but they weren't old, and that's when Can You Stand the Rain came,
- 5:03you know what I mean. But that mister telephone man, no,
- 5:09no, not on that one was like their first one. Yeah, it
- 5:12was called Any Heartbreak. Okay, yeah, yeah Heartbreak. Yeah, I'm
- 5:16trying to think of the names of the songs, but I know it had
- 5:19coming Home with Me. That was a super dope one. But specific was
- 5:23that the second like when they were older, Yeah, when they were a
- 5:26little older, but not the one like that they did with Diddy when they
- 5:30were in Bad Boy. Yeah, I'm gonna tell you right now. You
- 5:32know it's funny because yeah, yeah, I'm look at him too. And
- 5:36it's still because Jagged Edge was not the second coming to them, but you
- 5:42know, they were a dope R and regroup and their first album was Jay
- 5:46Heartbreak and like they modeled after that Any Heartbreak, j E Heartbreak and like
- 5:51that was such an impact to R and B groups. They sent the president
- 5:57so like the boy band for R and Begrus. It's just so if it
- 6:01isn't, love was actually on it. Yeah, I thought it wasn't for
- 6:05some reason, but yeah, so yeah it was that and can You Stand
- 6:11the Rain. It was really the reason why I grabbed that album. But
- 6:14I always knew that Boys to Men got their name from New Editions Men,
- 6:21So when I got that album was the actually first was the actual first time
- 6:26that I heard that song, and that's one of my favorite songs, like
- 6:30probably more like I probably liked that song better than anything on the album.
- 6:32And it wasn't a song that I knew like coming up, you know what
- 6:35I mean. Like, it wasn't a song that I knew as a kid.
- 6:38It was one that I found like as a teenager that I'm like,
- 6:41oh my gosh, like this song is a banger. And see that's like
- 6:46one of the things that I started to realize that I do is like if
- 6:49there's an artist that I really like, for example, like Boys to Men,
- 6:53right, but I don't know like a specific album that I want from
- 6:58them, then that's when I'm like, all right, well, let me
- 7:00just get the greatest hits, you know what I mean, Because then at
- 7:03least I know I can let it ride, you know what I mean.
- 7:06So like kind of going to your point, Joe, like that, that's
- 7:09kind of been like my little formula where it's like if it's not a classic
- 7:12album, if it's not an album that I'll let ride through, but I
- 7:15do want you know what I'm saying, Like I got the Mary J.
- 7:17Blige, the I think the retrospective, like It's like it's kind of like
- 7:21her greatest hits, you know what I mean. So like basically that's kind
- 7:26of like my little cheat code to that. But yeah, I'm with you,
- 7:29Like if I can't let it ride all the way through, then I
- 7:30don't want it on Vinyl hey Man to kind of lead into one of the
- 7:34things we're gonna talk about today, and I just really put this together in
- 7:39my head. I'm gonna start collecting rap and I'm gonna start with Cameron Bro
- 7:44and the reason why not because Cameron is my favorite rapper, but he is
- 7:48in my top five and Bro as far as projects go, Cameron's dog underrated
- 7:58slept on even the way he raps and the things he says. Somehow people
- 8:03take it like he's stupid or he's saying because they are, and something like
- 8:07you got a piece of pizza, You got a piece of pizza. You
- 8:11know what I'm saying, Like those kind But if you listen to the whole
- 8:13verse or the whole the where it leads to and the connections he makes like
- 8:20every bar like dog, this ship is thoughtful, bro like people, and
- 8:24it kind of leads into what Ludacris was talking about in that video. There's
- 8:28a video going around on the Internet where Ludacris is saying, like one of
- 8:33his favorite, if not his favorite rap verse of all time is Cameron on
- 8:37the Rock. It's a song with Memphis league Beanie Siegel, and it was
- 8:41on Cameron's first album, Rockefeller. It was after sde and it was like,
- 8:48nah, they didn't even have a hook. It was just straight through.
- 8:52They was just straight I get, like a random sample. I felt
- 8:54like it was. I was just wondering because yeah, maybe it did.
- 8:58But yeah, it was like when Cameron's verse comes even like at the time
- 9:03you talking about Memphis Bleag Beanie Siegul, like Vne Seguel was definitely like on
- 9:07top as far as spinners go, Memphis Bleak was always on that level underneath,
- 9:11you know what I mean. But he could do his thing every once
- 9:15in a while. But dog, it's like Cameron verse came on in that
- 9:18song and you could just tell why they're featured on his album, you know
- 9:22what I mean? Because because it's like I said, like I could I
- 9:26could live with somebody saying they just don't like Cameron style. That I one
- 9:31hundred percent understand. It's a very specific and unique style, so you definitely
- 9:35gotta like it, you know what I'm saying. It's kind of like Freeway
- 9:37to me. Like Freeway to me was in a quiet taste when I first
- 9:41heard him, I'm like, bro, he is trash. Bro, it's
- 9:43not rhyming thing. But when I caught it, when my mind caught on
- 9:46to the rhyme scheme that he was on, he's one of the hardest rappers
- 9:50I ever heard. You know what I'm saying that. You know when rap
- 9:56who got the last verse? Yeah? Whoever? It means, it means
- 10:01a lot. Who gets the last verse? Yep? You know what I'm
- 10:03saying. And for those rappers to be like, yeah, Cam gets it,
- 10:07even if get it. It's his album, but there's a lot of
- 10:11features where the main artist goes first unless the features run it. And then
- 10:16for artists like Luda to respect Canon much like there was a lot of respect
- 10:22for Cam at that point from the whole industry and still to this day facts
- 10:26because it wasn't even just the music. It was like his business mind too,
- 10:30and the way he was promoting himself, and like the positions he would
- 10:33kind of maneuver himself into pause. It was like you could tell this dude
- 10:37was like kind of operating on a different level than just a rapper, you
- 10:39know what I'm saying. And it's like I said, man, I could
- 10:43understand if you don't like the style. Cool, but you can't downplay him
- 10:46like he ain't spitting or he ain't putting a thought into what he's saying,
- 10:50because I'm telling you, every Cameron song, like the whole thing is like
- 10:54he's he's putting these songs together now by accident, not you know, not
- 11:01just a magic in the studio. Now, bro, this guy is an
- 11:03artist dog Like that's why, Like you even look at something we talked about
- 11:07before about Juel Santana not necessarily having the work ethic at the time to kind
- 11:15of live up to his expectation and when the camera's things was like he used
- 11:18to say that, I mean, he said that they used to have to
- 11:20kind of force him to record, force him to go to the studio,
- 11:24really beyond him about getting the music done. And when you think back and
- 11:26you kind of see what kind of artists Cam was. You know, he
- 11:31respected the music and put time and energy into it. So he was trying
- 11:35to impart that on him, like the way Cameron was rapping. He wasn't
- 11:39just walking in the studio and just randomly spitting something and leaving. You know
- 11:41what I'm saying. These rappers want to pretend like that's like the kind of
- 11:46vibe day on, and it's like, bro, that's not the vibe day
- 11:50on. They you know, they really taking this like the ones that you
- 11:54feel like are the top ones. Bro, they not just slapping this music
- 11:56together. You know what I'm saying. That's one of the greatest like myths
- 12:03that that kind of snowballed away from jay Z, that he didn't even really
- 12:09have to do with it, but that there's like a myth that he just
- 12:11goes in the studio, here's a beat, and he just starts freestyling off
- 12:16the top of his head and then it's like these songs that we're hearing and
- 12:18it's like, bro, it's not like that though. And he has so
- 12:22much yeah, like his Rap City Basement freestyle where he's counting the money,
- 12:28you know what I'm saying, he had it down and out with Kanye Like,
- 12:31he has so much iconic shit and people and including me, I'm people
- 12:37I underappreciate and I downplayed it because of those random corny lines that I would
- 12:43hear and I'm like, oh, this guy can't rap. But this is
- 12:46a conversation I had in one of my chests with some of the New York
- 12:48homeboys that are always into New York rap, and it's like Cameron was dope,
- 12:54but once everybody heard you else there was like a he's a rap,
- 13:00he's the one with bars and YadA, YadA, YadA. But Cam still
- 13:03had he had the flow. He had the flow, and like, so
- 13:07I went back. I went after that lout clip. I went back and
- 13:11watched the verses, the locks and dipsex won. I got something to say
- 13:16about that, and we didn't even talk about versus go ahead, go ahead,
- 13:18right and you have And even though they was against each other, Jada,
- 13:24the second that beat dropped, Jada was like, oh you had to
- 13:26do this. Jada was hype and then he was like filling in and the
- 13:31Adam li hab been the lyrics for him. He knew his whole verse.
- 13:35And that's how you know, like if you wasn't nice, nobody would know
- 13:39your shit. Like you're talking about Jada Kiss, Like this is a guy
- 13:43that like at one point he was like the crown jewel of rappers. Everybody
- 13:46had him like in their top five, if not number one, as far
- 13:48as like never missing with a verse, you know what I mean. But
- 13:52it's funny, man, because like I honestly feel like and I would like
- 13:56for somebody to ask him this man, Like I feel like Cameron low Key
- 14:01took what Jadakis said in verses professionally personally, you know what I'm saying,
- 14:07Like in a sense of like you know, I don't know if y'all remember,
- 14:11but when they were doing that versus, Jadakis's big thing was like y'all
- 14:16over here trying to look like models. You know, you're not even rapping
- 14:18your verses, you singing over songs, doing karaoke like we're MC's, we
- 14:24real rappers, rappers like Jadakiss was like, Yo, we got the bangers
- 14:28and we gonna outperform you. You know what I'm saying. And I feel
- 14:33like Cameron has always been that type of dude. Like if you watch him
- 14:35live shows and stuff like that, he raped everything, like you don't just
- 14:39be standing there, you know, being too cool, you know, letting
- 14:43the audience do the whole thing. Now he's rapping, bro, And I
- 14:46feel like he maybe kind of felt like he got a bad look in that
- 14:50spotlight being associated with the whole dipset thing, and he kind of was like,
- 14:54all right, let me remind these people, you know what I'm saying,
- 14:56because he's been dropping more like Little Freeze I was here and there more
- 15:01footage of him performance been coming out and stuff like that, so I kind
- 15:03of almost feel like it kind of like gave him that look, and he
- 15:07used that look to like remind people like who he is, you know what
- 15:11I mean? And even that like kind of going on with you, said
- 15:13Joe, Like, the only reason Cameron was even able to kind of just
- 15:16have this resurgence that he kind of just decided out of nowhere he's gonna have
- 15:22because all they said was yo, let's do the show and blow it up.
- 15:24And then they did it and it blew up. You know what I'm
- 15:26saying so quick before I basically my point with that is, like the only
- 15:31reason he was even able to do that is because he's not because he's nice,
- 15:35you know, because he was so dope as an artist. He's able
- 15:39to kind of come back on the scene and present something else because people are
- 15:43gonna respect him as Oh that's Cameron. You know what I mean? Yeah,
- 15:46no, And that's a good point. So I follow his production manager
- 15:52and the camera dude, and he literally posted this post and he said camera
- 15:56said on board, just put the camera on me. And there's a lot
- 15:58of rappers who surpassed a rapping career. I want to mention Joe Budden,
- 16:06who will say I wouldn't dare rap again, like that's below me and what
- 16:08YadA YadA yad. I'm so big, but at the end of the day,
- 16:11we want to know if you can still rap. And so for Cam
- 16:15to say, drop the camera on me when he just dropped, I used
- 16:21to give mine a fast way if I had a badable for pool, I
- 16:23got the mass base, stayed inside of the house. Mom. It was
- 16:26called a halfway. And it's like so flawlessly. He was brushing his hair.
- 16:30He's on set and it's just like yo. Cam was literally a rapper,
- 16:37a great rapper, a great flow, a great artist, a great
- 16:41spitter. And that's what was like. I underappreciated Cam despite dip said,
- 16:47despite juels, despite all the white rhymes, Cam was a great He He
- 16:52set precedence. He set precedents when he came in the game and I underappreciated,
- 17:00and I'm glad I had one more time. I'm glad with that louted
- 17:03crypt I'm glad with that that random clip of him freestyle because all week I
- 17:07just been listening to camp yeah man, and I want to like, I
- 17:15just discovered a new artist. Y'all have actually told me before to check him
- 17:18out. I didn't get around to it. And then shout out to Sean
- 17:21Madden He's actually gonna be on the show. He put me on to him,
- 17:26and like I've just been riding to his music ever since. Dog Like
- 17:30he even gives me kind of like a new like nowadays Cameron type dude,
- 17:34you know what I'm saying, Like his style, the kind of stuff he
- 17:37rap about, like the consistency, you know what I mean. Like I
- 17:41discovered him and I'm going through his library and he got a lot of bangers,
- 17:44you know what I'm saying. Oh yeah, And that even kind of
- 17:48like put the battery in my back about hip hop, you know what I
- 17:49mean, Because like I've been real down about it, you know, the
- 17:52last few years, I don't go out of my way to listen to new
- 17:56rap, and when I do I'm always disappointed, you know what I mean.
- 17:59Everything is always so corny to me. And even when somebody like comes
- 18:03out with a with a vibe of like, oh, I'm a real rapper
- 18:06and I'm gonna rap for real, like their attempt is always corny to me,
- 18:08you know what I mean. And Larry June is one that I listen
- 18:12to that I'm like, dang, like, this is a dude that sounds
- 18:15fresh. This is a dude that got some dope music. I like what
- 18:18he's talking about, and it's just like, bro shout out to him,
- 18:22man, Like, it's real hard to break through as a rapper nowadays.
- 18:26I feel like, yeah, no, I definitely agree with that, and
- 18:30he has a it's a unique style, but it's also, like you said,
- 18:37it's just a good hip hop sound, you know what I mean.
- 18:40Like I feel like you don't really get that sound as often anymore from the
- 18:45standpoint of just like hip hop and its roots, you know what I mean.
- 18:48I feel like we've gotten into the pop pop era and he's dope.
- 18:52He's dope, Manfinite'll feel do y'all feel that's a West Coast thing because so
- 18:57I put him in the line along the line of like Dom Kennedy, who
- 19:03else do I thinking about? Nipsey Nipsey Hustle? So like that West Coast
- 19:08style, like they know, the West Coast is so supportive of that style
- 19:12of music. And it's not it's not current style. It's I don't consider
- 19:18it pop. I don't consider it with the times. I consider it just
- 19:21the West Coast flow. You're having a picnic, you cruising, you're in
- 19:25the low riding, you're playing that kind of music. That's exactly what I
- 19:27was about to say right now. I feel like the way they vibe over
- 19:30there is different. So the music they vibe to is different. Like you
- 19:33brought up Dom Kennedy, Bro, anytime I go to La, anytime I
- 19:37go to California and I go to any you know, whatever it is,
- 19:41and there's people and anybody's vibeing dog, they're always playing Dom Kennedy and that
- 19:45and that vibe of music. Because it's like like you said, Bro,
- 19:48like they have they have like little kickbacks and stuff like you know over there
- 19:52they do a lot of like get togethers, you know, a party at
- 19:53somebody's crib. You know, Like the vibe over there is different. As
- 19:57far as like the way they chill, you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 20:00somebody my tense from the Barry. I lived in the Berry. My
- 20:03fami's still in the Bay Area and that's all they listen to. And there's
- 20:07still a lot more artists and mac dre. Like I went to a family
- 20:12reunion with my grandmother passed awake, got rest, so we was over there
- 20:17and after the whole service, we came back to the crib and it was
- 20:21just Mac dre all night. Every single one of my cousins knew every single
- 20:23word of that song. And I was like, damn, it ain't like
- 20:27this over on the East Side. I don't know if it's I'm not trying
- 20:30to say east to west, but it's not like that on the East Side.
- 20:33Yeah, now, bro, I feel you one hundred percent. And
- 20:36even like I feel like a lot of the get togethers that I do,
- 20:40it's like nobody's really nobody really does that out here, you know what I'm
- 20:45saying. And to me, it's such a dope vibe. And every time
- 20:47I do it, people pull up, people have a great time. They
- 20:49always talking about it. They always ask me, yo, when we're doing
- 20:52the next one, and it's like bro, Like we could be doing that
- 20:55all the time, you know what I'm saying, instead of going, you
- 20:57know, going to a place and spend an X amount of money for maybe
- 21:02having the time you know, I was about to turn up exactly exactly.
- 21:06And I feel like that's like you're saying, Joe, that's that culture difference
- 21:08here versus over there. Over here, if you're talking about, yo,
- 21:11let's chill, everybody's mind goes to, let's go somewhere where like we're not
- 21:15even going to be thinking, you know what I mean, like just loud
- 21:18music and everybody's just you know whatever. It's like over there, they're just
- 21:22they're trying to vibe, you know, they're trying to chill. Everybody's trying
- 21:26to be in the same element together. It's yeah, and I believe that
- 21:30music. And that's why, like I attributed to growing up on the West
- 21:34Coast till I was ten years old and listened to like a Lighter Shade of
- 21:38Brown on the Sunday Afternoon, one of my favorite songs that's still remning to
- 21:41this day. Uh. And that's why it's funny my brother in law,
- 21:45Junior. Shout out to Junior. He was born in La. He's from
- 21:48the West Coast, and when he was looking for random songs to post on
- 21:51his Instagram from random things, I sent him crazy Don Kennedy stuff. And
- 21:56that's why I like wits Khalif and wisk Leifan had that style when he started
- 21:59coming now, he had that West Coast floor, even though he's from Pittsburgh.
- 22:03Like he had that like laid back chill, like cruise in. He
- 22:07spent a lot of time in La too, like cooking up. Yeah,
- 22:11it's a different kind of vibe, man, And it still existed this day,
- 22:15no matter what year it is, no matter how much time it goes
- 22:18by. I feel that vibe still exists in the West Coast is day.
- 22:22Yeah. And and you're one hundred percent correct because even like with music,
- 22:25I could tell you just from seeing it, like a lot of times an
- 22:29artist will go out there, the music they make out there amazing, you
- 22:33know what I'm saying, And then when they try to make music somewhere else
- 22:36besides La, it's not the same. You know what I'm saying, It's
- 22:38not the same vibe. And not to say that, you know, they
- 22:41can't make music anywhere else, but it's kind of like you said, Joe,
- 22:45like it just puts you in a certain mood. The people that are
- 22:48making the music are already over there, you know what I'm saying. So
- 22:51it's like you're already just like locked in like the to the tenth degree,
- 22:55you know what I mean. Fact, But yeah, man, we had
- 23:03who sent the Cam Newton Charleston White Club? Yeah okayah remember, but yeah,
- 23:11I know we had somebody had came across it like it was super interesting,
- 23:14man, because I haven't been able to about that, So basically,
- 23:18like from I feel like I have a good perspective on it, just because
- 23:22I don't know too much about him, and I haven't consumed any of his
- 23:26content aside from the stuff that I see, which usually is just the stuff
- 23:30that they're gonna pick and choose, you know what I mean. So I
- 23:33haven't even like been able to really uh come up with with my opinion so
- 23:38much of him. But basically, Charleston White is like online personality, you
- 23:44know, somebody that kind of just pops up along the lines of like Drew
- 23:47Ski even like six' nine, Like you could almost put him in that
- 23:51category of like just like an online personality troll, you know what. I
- 23:56mean, was he an artist though, No, he's just like he's just
- 24:00like a definitely that's not the artists side. He's just like an older black
- 24:06dude. I believe he's from Louisiana. I can't remember. He's a real
- 24:11big Boosy fan and he got an accent, kind of like a Louisiana accent.
- 24:15Yeah maybe yeah. So he just like he's on some like Uncle Ruckus
- 24:22type vibes, you know what I mean. Every time you see the dude
- 24:25from Boondocks, like it was like the black dude that hated black you know
- 24:30what I mean. So every time you see like a clip from Charleston White,
- 24:34he's always on some type of time like that, you know what I
- 24:37mean. Like he's always like real talking, real down about black people,
- 24:41like always talking nice about how white people are and stuff like that. And
- 24:45then I see that, and then I see that clip on the Cam Newton
- 24:49Show. So he's on Cam Newton's podcast, I don't know if it's a
- 24:52podcast or YouTube show books and Charleston White was on there and Cam Newton basically
- 25:00he said, like, Yo, why you be saying the stuff you be
- 25:02saying? And then he kind of just runs down a list of things that
- 25:06he's done as far as like helping his community, working with lawmakers to try
- 25:11to get laws change and stuff. I haven't been able to verify none of
- 25:15that, but basically the gist of the clip is when I was doing all
- 25:19this stuff and trying to mobilize people to get behind what I was doing,
- 25:23nobody cared, you know, when I was just wearing my suit and tie
- 25:27going to work with these governors, senators, you know, local politicians,
- 25:33like you know, like you have making a change, Like everybody wants yep
- 25:37from their culture to do yep, making a change from within. But then
- 25:41he was like, the only time I really popped off to bring awareness to
- 25:45what I was doing was once I started doing the stupid ignorant stuff. So
- 25:48what is that? You know? He's basically saying, like this is what
- 25:52it is, Like this is on y'all type stuff. And it's crazy because,
- 25:56like we've kind of mentioned it before, but like there's formula that a
- 26:02lot of times will work if you follow that formula, you know what I
- 26:04mean. And that's kind of what Charleston White is alluding to. Like he
- 26:08played this character and used it so outlandishly to gain that popularity to really push
- 26:15forward whatever he's his agenda is, you know what I mean, Nobody was
- 26:18gonna move him forward or put him in that spotlight if they just recognized him
- 26:22from what he was doing in his community, you know what I mean.
- 26:26So like that, I just kind of want to like talk about that slash
- 26:30dissect that because it's super interesting to me because it's something that we all know.
- 26:33It's true, Like it's the car crash thing, you know what I
- 26:37mean. Like it's always you know, something kind of like sensationalized that's going
- 26:41to make his rounds before anything, you know. And it's sad that it's
- 26:47that way, but it is that way. So it's like people are always
- 26:51like being in this kind of like dilemma where they're trying to fin out,
- 27:00like, oh am I going to move forward in this situation by doing X,
- 27:03Y and Z? Or Am I going to kind of stay where I'm
- 27:06at because I'm not comfortable with doing X, Y and Z, you know
- 27:08what I mean? And I just kind of wanted to get your opinion on
- 27:12that because, like I said, like if we're taking what he's saying at
- 27:15face value, that he was doing all these things behind the scenes before and
- 27:19it took for him to take on this internet character for him to get any
- 27:25movement. What do y'all think about that? I mean, I think he
- 27:30he did what he had to do. But I will say that he you
- 27:34know, there is some truth to what he's saying, but there's probably also
- 27:38some I don't know because I've seen you know, I'm not a I don't
- 27:42follow Charleston White a lot, you know what I'm saying. But I will
- 27:45say, like when I go get my hair locked up, you know,
- 27:48and go get my haircut and stuff, like they'll play clips like in the
- 27:52in the barbershop. You know what I'm saying. Yeah, he is.
- 27:53So I've seen like things he's done, Like I've seen him get into it
- 27:57with a dude and have that like like basically like he had like a knife
- 28:02on them. He had to slice this dude up, you know what I'm
- 28:03saying, like because a black dude came at him or whatever. Like I've
- 28:07seen like his antics and like kind of like that side of it. So
- 28:11I don't know, Like I feel like, yeah, there probably might be
- 28:15some truth to it. You know what I'm saying. He probably had to
- 28:18take on this certain persona just you know, he was like cause I think
- 28:21he even said, like, I didn't even realize I was funny to the
- 28:22internet told me I was funny, you know what I mean. And so
- 28:26like, I think there's some truth to it in a sense of like he
- 28:27figured out, like, hey, this is what's working. Let me just
- 28:30do this, you know what I'm saying, Like even when we're doing the
- 28:33music stuff, like you know, we talked, you know, shout out
- 28:37to Freddy, you know what I mean. We talked with Freddy a lot,
- 28:38and and you know, we try stuff, we see what works,
- 28:42we try stuff, we see what doesn't work, and you know, if
- 28:45something's working, you're probably going to dive into that. And I think that
- 28:49that's kind of what might have happened in his situation. But I mean,
- 28:53from what I saw he did, he was like all the stuff that he's
- 28:56saying as far as like, you know, him be an active in his
- 29:00community. From what I saw in fact check, it was true, you
- 29:03know what I mean. So like, you know, I get that side
- 29:07of it too, So I don't know, I think there's a little bit
- 29:08of h you know, embellishment, you know what I'm saying. When it
- 29:11comes to it, you know what I mean. But there definitely could be
- 29:15some truth as well. Yeah, And that's why, Like I will discredit
- 29:22some people who start in the the ratchet way, in the ignorant way,
- 29:30and then try to drop some real shit. It's like, not like I'm
- 29:33not looking for you to do that, but for him to start that way
- 29:37and then no one pay attention and then go the ignorant way, like I
- 29:40wouldn't expect him to even care to reach out to the people who want him
- 29:45to start dropping that real shit anymore, you know what I'm saying. Like
- 29:47he did that. That was his persona, that was his true persona,
- 29:51and for people to pay attention, he had to do that ignorant character.
- 29:55And I was like, oh, no, y'all, if y'all listen to
- 29:56me, then I don't give a shit Like now, like you said,
- 30:00he threw them stats out. He's like chlamydia HIV all the shit I was
- 30:03talking about y'all suffering from now and y'all didn't want to listen to me then
- 30:07because I wasn't ignorant, I wasn't making jokes, and I wasn't being funny
- 30:11about it. I feel him I feel him. But he is quite a
- 30:17character though. M m. That's why's true to it? Yeah, yeah,
- 30:22yeah, you know Wayne's character for sure in the beginning, but yeah,
- 30:27he's it's it's definitely like a curious thing. And that's always like one
- 30:32of the one of the things about like this big social experiment type vibe that
- 30:37we're on always like fascinates me, Like how like I wonder what somebody like
- 30:42that limit is in their head where like that switch change where they're like I'm
- 30:47just gonna take this on and claim it to further my cause, you know
- 30:51what I mean, Because it's like I think we mentioned it on the show
- 30:55before, but like it's like the baby when he first popped off, Like
- 30:56the reason why he even was getting on people's radar was because he was at
- 31:00some music festival with a diaper on, you know what I'm saying. Like
- 31:04he was like, yeah, he was on stage with a dipe, just
- 31:08a diaper on. Bro. He came out because he was the baby,
- 31:11you know what I'm saying. Before he was the baby, he was baby
- 31:12Jesus never came out and he came out in a diaper, bro. And
- 31:18then that was like when you got people talking yep, and then he kind
- 31:22of blew up after that. Obviously he don't have to do that no more,
- 31:26you know what I mean. But that side of him, I knew
- 31:30once he blew up then you know, But I don't know. It just
- 31:33kind of goes to that point of like, you know what, do you
- 31:36want the baby? The baby gotcha? That makes Yeah, It's like I
- 31:45don't know, man, I understand what he's saying, Charleston White, But
- 31:51at the same time, it's like the route that he went is definitely not
- 31:55the route I would have went, you know what I'm saying. But at
- 31:57the same time, like who knows if he's making a bigger impact than me
- 32:01by taking a route he went, you know what I'm saying, Like the
- 32:05end of the day, it's like sometimes it's even a sacrifice on yourself.
- 32:08Like maybe he's saying, I don't care if people look at me this way
- 32:10because I can do this for others by doing this character, you know what
- 32:15I mean. There's like a lot of layers to it that like it goes
- 32:19back to like that thing of like bro like we don't know what's going on
- 32:22with anybody, Like everybody got their own things. They dealing with and like
- 32:25everybody just always assumes that they're the hero and the other person's the bad guy.
- 32:30You know, I was watching this thing about World War two, World
- 32:35War two in color. I don't know if y'all see that. Yeah,
- 32:39I hadn't watched it before, and I was watching it, and it was
- 32:44a little part where they were talking to the German soldiers that were still alive
- 32:49at the time when they were interviewing them, and basically all of them was
- 32:52saying, like, bro, we thought we was the good guys, you
- 32:54know what I mean, Like we was going out to war like feeling like
- 32:58yo, we about to change the world, Like we about to fix this.
- 33:00These people are doing X, Y and Z or evil whatever. But
- 33:04it's like one of the forgotten things about that era is like one of the
- 33:08big details that Hitler was doing. I mean, one of the key things
- 33:14that Hitler was doing was starting that real big heavy propaganda movement, you know,
- 33:17where it was like, you know, the movies were making the government
- 33:21look good. You know, the radio was making them look good. The
- 33:23music even like they was even making artists like make songs like talking about the
- 33:28government being good, and like, you know, the military being good and
- 33:31everything. So they really just had all the people gassed up and thinking like,
- 33:35yo, we're doing the right thing, you know what I'm saying.
- 33:37It wasn't until way later and after the whole dust settled that they was like,
- 33:39oh wow, like this dude was mad racist and he was really trying
- 33:44to take over the world because we wanted everybody to be white with green eyes.
- 33:47Like it's crazy, man, yeah, man, But it's funny.
- 33:59Man. That's like a crazy like twist of topics because I'm like reading them
- 34:02now and thinking about all the stuff we talked about. But somehow it all
- 34:06flowed, you know what I mean. But yeah, dog, you already
- 34:09know what time it is. People got to understand, all right, y'all
- 34:15can hear me? Right? Yeah, that's some people gotta understand about our
- 34:19topics, Like we are so improvisational, Like we got maybe two topics max,
- 34:27and if we even touch on them, it's a blessing. But for
- 34:30the most part, we're just writing and this is just like constant flow of
- 34:35thought that we just talk about and we just ride away. And there's a
- 34:38lot of people who can't you can't accomplish what we're doing. So it's a
- 34:42good thing. It goes kind of back to even like the Larry June music
- 34:45and the vibe a bit, you know what I mean, and that kickback,
- 34:47chilling kind of atmosphere and stuff like that's like the kind of vibe even
- 34:52like these conversations be giving me. And you know, going back touching on
- 34:57history again, you think about degree where they had them famous like forums,
- 35:01you know what I mean, where people were just kind of gathered to talk
- 35:04and talk through ideas and concepts and things like that, and that's the brutal
- 35:08stamp Caesar. Hey man, I just I just watched that Roman Empire thing.
- 35:13Man was it was one of those things where I'm like, I already
- 35:15knew the ending, but I was excited to get to it, you know.
- 35:21But yeah, man, it's definitely dope. But it's game time,
- 35:25baby, Do we have a record? I was thinking about that the other
- 35:35day. I'm gonna have to go back and let's just call it even I
- 35:38don't like that. All right, Well, you're gonna have to go roll
- 35:42through all the Crimson clips and find out it's in the description so I can
- 35:45check them in and just at the end, so I can definitely make sure.
- 35:49I think you'all tied, to be honest, that's what I'm saying.
- 35:52I think you'll tie if y'all not tied us out by one. Because remember
- 35:57Quincy was out that week and I crushed him, so crushed by the fault
- 36:02fall. You ain't start a player that week, Quincy. Let's get to
- 36:07come out next week though, I've been ready all week. Then you got
- 36:10your bike coming up? He got that bike. I got my next week,
- 36:15Quincy, I'm putting my starters in. All right, you ready,
- 36:20let's get it. Let's try to get this year, baby, go ahead
- 36:23and throw it out now. I had the last year, last one.
- 36:27First, go ahead, Quincy ninety eight, Go ahead, Joe ninety nine
- 36:35one dirt bag? This may hit me with the price is right movie?
- 36:39Yo? Yeah, yeah, I coulda take ninety eight oh one? Gets
- 36:43you with that? What the technique in January? All right, let's get
- 36:49it man. This was actually the week of March tenth, two thousand and
- 36:52one, and this hurst one is this Caribbean Inspire song was part of a
- 37:01special run from this artist that included a song about getting caught with a side
- 37:07piece. Wasn't fucking me? Listen to the question, and I'm gonna tell
- 37:16the artists too. I mean, you have to guess the artists first.
- 37:19So Shaggy or Ricky Martin, Sean Paul Shaggy or Ricky Martin Shaggy? All
- 37:25right, bet so this Caribbean inspire song was part of a special run that
- 37:30included that included a song about getting caught with a side piece. So that's
- 37:36not the song. Oh, music included that song. So what's the other
- 37:43song? Alright, Now he hasn't guess yet, he hasn't. No,
- 37:52it's the first time he has a collection of songs there. Now you get
- 38:00it the way because you haven't guessed that. I had to read the question
- 38:01after you get it. Was the first time you included the description of a
- 38:07song. That's not the answer first, it's the stacking, the knowledge and
- 38:12the misdirection. I'm going with Shaggy, Yes, sir, Okay, you
- 38:16want to hear the thing again. This Caribbean inspired song was part of a
- 38:22special run from this artist that included a song about getting caught with a side
- 38:25piece. Okay, so that mean show it your my hand. He two
- 38:43songs. You already got the first role, get it wrong. It was
- 38:51part of that run the answer. God, this just dropped this whole catalog.
- 39:01Hey, first of all, you know what you do multiple choice,
- 39:04and he said, you pick all the answers that apply. Just another one
- 39:09that face and you gotta circle that last. I'm saying, Angel, it
- 39:14wasn't me all of the above A and B. There you go. Oh
- 39:21my god, Joe got one? Is that your points? No? That's
- 39:28one, alright, damn just chill, get to im, have to go
- 39:34to the board about this. But don't try to get two points. It's
- 39:38cold blooded out here, all right. R This R and B quote unquote
- 39:45boy band had a string of hits with this acknowledgment of a relationship ending being
- 39:53the center one of the centerpieces. So this R and B boy band was
- 40:00a staple of the era and featured Oh my bad, I'm reading the wrong
- 40:05one. So this R and B boy band had a string of hits with
- 40:10this acknowledgment of a relationship ending being one of the center pieces. So the
- 40:15artists are one twelve Jagged Edge or B two K You want to hear the
- 40:23question again? Wait, I think I know this one one twelve one twelve
- 40:34is correct. What is the song you want to hear the question again or
- 40:37you got to know it? Do it? It's over? Now? What
- 40:42is your podcast? Yeah? Dropped? Yo, I drought the crazy freeside
- 40:47of song? Ready for that? Ye? The freezy? All right?
- 40:52So this is the last one, Joe. If you get it, you
- 40:54win. If not, this is cancer all right, no timeouts, freeze.
- 41:01This is a good this is a good little toughie. And actually it
- 41:05surprised me with this position as well, what she said. This RN B
- 41:09banger was a staple of this era and featured a rapper with a loud and
- 41:15wild style and was centered around oh, go ahead, and was centered around
- 41:22the speach no, yeah, I already know, but give me options.
- 41:27Case Carl Thomas, We're gonna go shit. I know who the rapper is,
- 41:36but which song is it? Give me? To give me to give
- 41:37me the think again. This R and B banger was a staple of the
- 41:42era and featured a rapper with a loud and wild style and was centered around
- 41:46a speech impediment, speech impediment, There you go, okay, And then
- 41:52it was Joe Case Carl Thomas, Carl Thomas incorrect Wednesday. Did you want
- 42:09either question? Or you got it? Just give it to me one more
- 42:13time for good measure. This R and B banger was a staple of the
- 42:16era and featured a rapper with a loud and wild style and was centered around
- 42:22a speech in pediman Joe Case and Carl Thomas. Well it's not Joe Case
- 42:30is sher boy Joe Joe? And what's the song? My friend? Just
- 42:37a study of study study stop. They already had a speech of pediment.
- 42:47The winner in a freaking shootout is Quintonian Jamal righting the border, I'm writing
- 42:53the board. I thought the artists had credit left. I can tell you
- 43:07lying because when you're playing saying when you hit that play back, you go
- 43:12see it incorrect? My friend, who's who's rapping on a center? Mystical?
- 43:19Yeah, there you go. Yeah, I knew it was mystical.
- 43:24Joking with the challenge flag let's ship out? Who was down in shame?
- 43:32Just sound like once he realized, he was like, oh man, I
- 43:37was trying to find a way out. I'm trying to find something like that
- 43:49game is getting better and better, man, facts better and better. Man.
- 43:53You know what we need to do next time? When you put lesser
- 43:57in the ringer? Yeah, tell me how to do that. I'll put
- 44:00your ass in the ring. I got you, I got you. I'll
- 44:02run through how I do it this Saturday, my dog Joe pulling up.
- 44:09You hear me. You create a little creative session. And the dope thing
- 44:15about it is, I'm going to be wrapping up my Christmas stone and dropping
- 44:21that thing asap, so you're only hearing this here until it drops. That's
- 44:25the benefit of listening. Yo. You already know I'm gonna be like I
- 44:36am wanting to anticipate because I have no idea what to expect. Man,
- 44:40that's that's good. I showed it to my wife yesterday. She I sat
- 44:45back, like behind the couch here, and she was here next to the
- 44:49speakers, listening to it. And I'm watching her like this, and she's
- 44:53just like this the whole time, right staring, and I'm like, dang,
- 44:59man, I'm really about the way three minutes and someone seconds for her
- 45:01to tell me this ship was asked, you know what I mean, Because
- 45:04that's just the vibe of like how she was sitting there, and then when
- 45:07it finished, she looked at me, She's like, I liked it,
- 45:09Oh, I got I was like, dang, bro, I was so
- 45:13misleading. Yeah, but I'm definitely hyped to drop that. You got anything
- 45:20going on right now, Quintonian Man just trying to wrap up this project.
- 45:23Man, I've been dealing with some life transitions and I think I'm reaching the
- 45:29back end of that pall, so like, you know, yeah, man,
- 45:32I'm handover fist right now. Yeah. He Yo. First of all,
- 45:39you know what that means, you guys handle it. No handover fist
- 45:44means this guy's yeah, this guys on the grind, getting paid, making
- 45:50money, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, facts, facts, definitely
- 45:52definitely been grinding it out, so hopefully that'll all get ironed out. But
- 45:57yeah, man, it's been a hell of a run this year. I
- 45:59know, me and Less both kind of dropped like our little Spotify like year
- 46:02end results and stuff like that. So that was really dope. Man,
- 46:06It's been a hell of a year. I'm ready for next year to just
- 46:09try to you know, get back on it. Man. But like I
- 46:12said, the end of this year was a little rough, just real life
- 46:15stuff, man. But I'm reaching the end of that little that little rut,
- 46:20you know what I mean, So like things are looking good right now.
- 46:22Yeah, man, definitely. Like as an artist, you get that
- 46:24feeling like if you're not putting out music, you're not doing nothing, you
- 46:29know what I mean. And music is one of those things, man,
- 46:31Like you got to live a little life even just to like come with a
- 46:35new perspective and a fresh take on what you've been doing, you know what
- 46:37I mean. And I'm definitely excited to get into that next chapter. I
- 46:42actually have a little, a little project idea that I wanted to run by
- 46:45you, Quincy. We'll talk about it right when we get off air.
- 46:47It's a quick thing. I think it would be kind of dope. But
- 46:51yeah, man, you got anything else, anybody got anything else? I
- 46:55won't be here next week. If you boys got an episode, hold it
- 46:59down for your player. But you know, when we come back, I'll
- 47:02finally be back in my new place, in my new studio, in my
- 47:07new setup. And I can't wait until the next background y'all see is my
- 47:10permanent background. I'm hype we in there, Sure, yes, sir,
- 47:16And always remember, as DK would say, inside, stay better.
