Carson Benge just turned right field into a high-speed defensive clinic, throwing out two Mets baserunners in one inning — the first time anyone in Mets history has done that. His 99.9 mph throw nailed Jake Cronenworth, then he upped it to 103.9 mph to beat Manny Machado, adding to his already impressive nine assists this season. The Mets’ defense kept the Padres scoreless early with more clutch plays, including a ground ball and a sharp relay to catch another runner.
