- 0:00Welcome to the show, everybody!
- 0:02I'm Dangerous Zygos, here with DJ Universe, Calvin Blingwell,
- 0:06and Dandy Market.
- 0:07And today, I want to start with a transaction that completely redefined the
- 0:12financial ceiling of hip-hop: JAY-Z selling a fifty percent stake in his champagne
- 0:17brand, Armand de Brignac, to LVMH back in 2021, followed by selling his majority
- 0:22stake in D'Ussé cognac to Bacardi in 2023 for an estimated seven hundred and fifty
- 0:28million dollars.
- 0:30Seven hundred and fifty million from just one of those deals.
- 0:33That is not a club appearance fee, man.
- 0:35That is legacy wealth.
- 0:38Most artists are out here chasing a quick check to hold up a bottle on Instagram,
- 0:42but Hov built the actual distribution pipeline.
- 0:46Exactly.
- 0:46There is a massive structural difference between renting your face and owning the
- 0:50equity.
- 0:51When you sign a standard endorsement deal, you might get a clean two hundred and
- 0:55fifty thousand dollars upfront.
- 0:57Sounds huge, right?
- 0:59But you're just a line item in their marketing budget.
- 1:01When that brand scales from a ten-million-dollar valuation to a billion-dollar
- 1:06acquisition, your contract ends, and you get exactly zero percent of that exit.
- 1:12That's the basic math of capital versus labor, Calvin.
- 1:16A flat fee pays you once for your time and likeness.
- 1:20Equity pays you on the compounding value of the enterprise.
- 1:24If you own even five percent of a brand that scales to a five-hundred-million-dollar
- 1:29acquisition, that's twenty-five million dollars at the exit.
- 1:33Compare that to a one-time two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar check.
- 1:37It's not even the same sport.
- 1:40See, to me, this is the ultimate manifestation of the Five-Percent Nation principles
- 1:45we talk about in the culture: Knowledge, Wisdom, and Understanding,
- 1:51leading to Build or Destroy.
- 1:54The knowledge is knowing the true value of your cultural influence.
- 1:59The wisdom is refusing to let corporate suits exploit it for pennies on the dollar.
- 2:05The understanding is seeing how the financial machine works,
- 2:09and the build is creating an independent asset that cannot be taken from you or
- 2:14negotiated away.
- 2:16Hov didn't just play their game; he built his own board.
- 2:20And let's look at the timeline on that D'Ussé play.
- 2:23He launched that partnership with Bacardi back in 2012.
- 2:27He didn't just flip it in twelve months.
- 2:29He spent over a decade grinding, integrating it into the lyrics,
- 2:33the lifestyle, the VIP lounges, until Bacardi had no choice but to buy him out at
- 2:38that massive valuation because he *was* the brand's equity.
- 2:43But look, we have to keep it real for the indie artists listening who don't have
- 2:46JAY-Z's leverage or a direct line to LVMH.
- 2:50How do you apply this logic when you're still building from the ground up?
- 2:54For me, as an independent artist, it starts with the music itself.
- 2:58Your masters and your publishing are your primary equity.
- 3:01If you sign away eighty percent of your masters to a label for a quick
- 3:05hundred-thousand-dollar advance, you've just rented out your intellectual property.
- 3:11That is a perfect parallel, Calvin.
- 3:13Your song catalog is an asset class.
- 3:16Every time that track gets streamed on Spotify, synchronized in a Netflix show,
- 3:21or sampled by another artist, that is a recurring dividend yield.
- 3:25If you own the masters, you own the equity in that cash flow.
- 3:29And you can scale this outside of the music too.
- 3:32Look at merch and direct-to-fan products.
- 3:35Instead of using a third-party print-on-demand service that takes an eighty percent
- 3:40cut of your apparel sales, you source the blanks, you manage the screen printing,
- 3:45you set up your own Shopify.
- 3:47You are building a micro-brand.
- 3:49That cultural trust you build with your listeners is the ultimate leverage.
- 3:53When partners see you can move five thousand hoodies on your own,
- 3:57they don't offer you flat endorsement fees anymore; they start talking joint
- 4:01ventures.
- 4:02It's about staying lit to survive, man.
- 4:04You can't let the temporary flash of a quick check blind you to the long-term play.
- 4:09If you're constantly trading your daily labor for daily bread,
- 4:13you're always vulnerable.
- 4:14But when you own the press, when you own the supply chain, even on a small scale,
- 4:20you create a foundation that can't be washed away by a bad algorithm day or a quiet
- 4:25touring season.
- 4:27That part is crucial.
- 4:28Every artist needs to ask themselves when a contract is put in front of them: is
- 4:33this check buying my freedom, or is it just buying my time?
- 4:37If you're giving up ownership of your name, your image, or your music for a
- 4:41temporary bag, you're just delaying the moment you have to start over from scratch.
- 4:47The math doesn't lie.
- 4:48Build your own cap table, even if it's small, and make sure you own the majority of
- 4:52the shares.
- 4:52That's how you turn cultural influence into generational wealth.
- 4:56Thanks for rocking with us, everyone.
- 4:57We'll catch you on the next one.
