- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Hello, hello, poacher.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Dave Light, and welcome to Travel with a Pearl, the podcast.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I'm to keep sojourn and friends and entertained and inspired.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: In today's episode, we're going to look in on Earl and Pearl Traveler again as they discover something most of us sojourners have enjoyed.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: The hand in foot game at Can't Be Lodge had finally come to an end.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: As expected, Pat Rains and Sheila Little walked away with another victory.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Again, Earl sighed.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Pearl laughed.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: You'd think after all these years someone would figure out how to beat them.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Earl grinned.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: We almost did.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Earl looked over her glasses.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: We won one hand.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Earl nodded proudly.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And it was a beautiful hand.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: It was our only hand, Earl pointed out.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Yes, but it was memorable, said Earl.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Then Sheila Little said, Earl, you played so well tonight that we almost had to pay attention.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: The four of them laughed as everybody began to make their way back to the RVs.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: But the coffee pot was still warm.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: So they settled into a corner of the lodge for one more visit before calling it a night.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: After a few minutes, Earl asked, Pat, we've eaten at several places around here, but is there somewhere we haven't discovered yet?
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Pat's eyes twinkled.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Oh absolutely.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Earl leaned forward.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Pat said you need to drive over to Jefferson tomorrow and eat at Kit's cornbread sandwich shop.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Earl blinked.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Cornbread?
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Sandwich?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: That's right, said Pat.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Did you say cornbread?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: As the bread?
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: said Earl.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Pat smiled.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Now, if there's one thing Earl enjoyed, it was cornbread.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And if there are two things Earl enjoyed, they are cornbread and sandwiches.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: The idea that someone had the brilliance to combine the two bordered on genius.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Earl recognized the look immediately.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: She whispered to Pat, You've lost him.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I think so, Pat whispered back.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Earl was already planning tomorrow's schedule.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: We'll leave after breakfast, he announced.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Earl smiled.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I thought breakfast was tomorrow's plan.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: It still is, he said, but lunch has suddenly become much more important.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Well, the next morning they pointed Pat's car toward nearby Jefferson, Texas.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: The historical streets were lined with old brick buildings, antique shops, and reminders of another era.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Earl enjoyed every minute of it, but his mind was focused on one thing cornbread sandwiches.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Then they spotted Kipps.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Earl stopped in front of the sign and simply admired it.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I've waited my whole life for this place and didn't even know it existed, he said, with an odd tone in his voice.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Pearl shook her head.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Only you would get emotional over cornbread.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Inside the aroma of fresh food filled the restaurant.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Earl eagerly opened the menu.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Then he froze.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: His eyes grew wide.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Pearl.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: What?
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: she said.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: They have jalapena cornbread sandwiches.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: That's nice.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: With fried bologna.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Earl smiled.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: You're kidding.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: No, he pointed to the menu.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: It's right there.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: For a moment Earl simply stared.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Earl laughed.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: I think you're having a spiritual moment, she said.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Earl looked up with complete sincerity.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: I hardly know how to respond.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: You could order, she prompted.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Good idea.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Soon the server arrived to take their order.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: As Earl ordered the redneck special, the server pointed out that he could combine the sandwich with a soup.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Earl looked down and saw chili on the menu.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Can I add a bowl of chili to the order?
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: he asked, with what looked like the beginning of a glazed look in his eyes.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Of course, said the server.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: One redneck special with a side of chili.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Mister, you are in for a treat.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Earl became strangely silent.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: When the sandwich finally arrived, Earl admired it like an art collector seeing a priceless masterpiece.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Golden jalapeno cornbread, perfectly fried bologna, and a bowl of steaming hot chili with melted cheese on top.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: All the fixing.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: He carefully picked up his sandwich.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Everyone waited.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: One bite silence.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Another bite still silence.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Earl looked over at Pat.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen him this quiet since he accidentally glued his fingers together.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Finally, Earl swallowed.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Pat, Earl asked with a touch of awe in his voice.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Yes?
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: You should have told me.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: No, he smiled.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: You should have told me it was this good.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Pat laughed.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: I knew one bite would do all the talking.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: The three of them enjoyed lunch, laughed about the previous night's card game, and spent the afternoon exploring Jefferson before heading back to Camp B.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Well as they drove home, Earl looked out the window and smiled.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: You know, that sandwich wasn't anything like I imagined.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Earl nodded.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: It was even better.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Then she added thoughtfully, sometimes the best things come in unexpected packages.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Earl smiled.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Kinda reminds me of Nathaniel.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Earl looked over.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Can anything good come out of Nazareth?
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Earl said.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: People judge Jesus by where he came from instead of discovering who he truly was.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Earl looked back towards Jefferson disappearing in the rearview mirror.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I'm glad we didn't judge that sandwich by its unusual name, Earl laughed.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Well, friends, sometimes we form opinions before we experience something for ourselves.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Nathaniel questioned whether anything worthwhile could come from Nazareth, yet he soon discovered the Messiah.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: And like Earl found out at Kit's cornbread shop, sometimes blessings come wrapped in the most unexpected packages.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Well Nathaniel said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth?
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Philip said to him, Come and see.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening to this podcast.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: I invite you to subscribe and share it with others.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: I'm your host Dave Leighton, and remember we glorify God as together we travel with a purpose.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Happy sojourning.
