- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, welcome to the Patreon podcast. I am Kelly Scott
- 0:03Speaker 1: and we are here today with Jeff Grooms.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Jeff, you are? What's up? Jeff Grooms here, the bookie
- 0:09Speaker 2: manager for Mic Drop Comedy. Glad to be here. Yes. Yeah,
- 0:12Speaker 2: I think you're having me. Thank you.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We appreciate having you. Exclusive access, okay? We're gonna hit
- 0:16Speaker 1: you with a hard.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Okay, all right. Let me lock in real quick. Let's
- 0:19Speaker 2: see what we got.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Okay, what is one opinion about comedy that people disagree
- 0:24Speaker 1: with you on?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Limit your cussing and crowd work. Yeah, keep the vulgarity down,
- 0:29Speaker 2: especially when you're starting out, if you're really trying to
- 0:31Speaker 2: get your joke writing, trying to get spots. Write that down!
- 0:34Speaker 1: Write that down!
- 0:35Speaker 2: That'll go a lot further. I think a lot of
- 0:37Speaker 2: times we hear a lot of the profanity thrown in there,
- 0:41Speaker 2: and it's just like, ah, that's who I am. That's
- 0:42Speaker 2: what I want to do. But I'm like, it's better.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Try to go clean with it. And then you can
- 0:46Speaker 2: always make it dirty.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Jeff says, don't be yourself.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense. It's appropriate.
- 0:52Speaker 1: What is one thing that newer comics need to stop
- 0:55Speaker 1: worrying about?
- 0:56Speaker 2: When they're going to be booked to feature in Headline,
- 1:00Speaker 2: I think it's one of those, like, you really have
- 1:01Speaker 2: to be patient in the game. You know, when you're
- 1:05Speaker 2: new and you're stepping in and you're hitting the open
- 1:07Speaker 2: mic or you're doing, you know, showcase, five, ten-minute showcase spots,
- 1:10Speaker 2: keep grinding it out. Keep getting the laughs in there
- 1:13Speaker 2: and let it come to you to get booked on
- 1:16Speaker 2: big shows at different clubs or go on the road
- 1:18Speaker 2: and this and that. I think it's a, you know,
- 1:19Speaker 2: it's a patience game. Like, be the funniest guy or
- 1:21Speaker 2: girl and keep on moving up.
- 1:23Speaker 1: That's good.
- 1:24Speaker 2: That's good. You like that one? That was all right? Okay.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Okay, name one comic that people should be paying attention
- 1:30Speaker 1: to right now.
- 1:31Speaker 2: That's a tough question now, you know what I mean?
- 1:33Speaker 2: Because it's like.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Is there anybody that, like, just, like, have you, like,
- 1:37Speaker 1: sparked right now?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Anyone that has me, like, sparked right now? Great question.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I'm trying to think the last stand-up I watched. I mean,
- 1:44Speaker 2: I really like Ali Sadiq. I mean... But I mean,
- 1:46Speaker 2: you know, that's someone who's at the high of the high,
- 1:49Speaker 2: you know what I mean? So there really are so
- 1:52Speaker 2: many comics that are, you know, putting out Don't Tell,
- 1:54Speaker 2: especially on YouTube. And there's sometimes I'll just go on
- 1:57Speaker 2: there and just watch and I'll come across clips and such.
- 1:59Speaker 2: But I just, you know, I just love watching good,
- 2:01Speaker 2: well-written comedy. Same answers all the way around, but not wrong. Okay.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And I, oh!
- 2:07Speaker 1: Panel, are you also doing The Last Unlimited?
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. So we have the mic drop comedy, San Diego,
- 2:13Speaker 2: Chandler in Arizona. Plano, Texas, Detroit, and then we also
- 2:17Speaker 2: do some off-night bookings up in Sacramento at Laughs Unlimited. So,
- 2:22Speaker 2: oh yeah, a lot of different options out there. Okay.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Does the same comic travel well, or is San Diego
- 2:28Speaker 1: different from Texas? Do we have to adapt to the
- 2:32Speaker 1: different demographics?
- 2:33Speaker 2: I think that there is a little bit of an adaptation,
- 2:37Speaker 2: but when you get to that level and you're touring
- 2:40Speaker 2: on the road, Your material is your material, so maybe
- 2:43Speaker 2: you switch up the way you deliver it or the
- 2:45Speaker 2: order of it, but that is your material. You know
- 2:48Speaker 2: it hits hard, and so when you go to a
- 2:51Speaker 2: different area, it gives you the opportunity to test that
- 2:53Speaker 2: material out and see, do I need to switch it up?
- 2:55Speaker 2: My opinion from watching comics in different areas and traveling
- 3:00Speaker 2: a little bit myself is go up there, be yourself,
- 3:03Speaker 2: and hit your material up there, and maybe you stay
- 3:06Speaker 2: away from some topical stuff where you know, hey, this
- 3:08Speaker 2: area probably isn't going to... mix with, I don't know,
- 3:12Speaker 2: my religious bits or this or that. But for the
- 3:14Speaker 2: most part, keep your material and have so much that
- 3:17Speaker 2: you can interchange your jokes if needed for whatever market
- 3:21Speaker 2: that you're in.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Like, how do you know going into these different regions,
- 3:25Speaker 1: like whether or not something is on or off brand
- 3:29Speaker 1: for that specific area?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Great question. I think part of it is, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 2: the experience in the game, like the longer that you're there, um,
- 3:37Speaker 2: you're talking to some of the local comics, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 2: maybe the ones that are on your show, or when
- 3:43Speaker 2: you're there, you're kind of observing the room, seeing what
- 3:47Speaker 2: it's kind of looking like. And from there, you're able to,
- 3:49Speaker 2: you know, make your decisions too. But I think it's
- 3:51Speaker 2: one of those that kind of comes with practice. Like
- 3:53Speaker 2: the first time you're there, you're not going to know,
- 3:55Speaker 2: you know, everything's not going to be perfect, right? But
- 3:56Speaker 2: that's why we're in that game of you keep on
- 3:59Speaker 2: working at it. You keep on writing, you tailor what
- 4:01Speaker 2: needs to be tailored. And then, you know, you learn
- 4:03Speaker 2: along that road because comedy is one of those There
- 4:06Speaker 2: is no one path that gets us from point A
- 4:07Speaker 2: to point B. So there's a lot of trial and
- 4:09Speaker 2: error in there. And that's a necessary part of the game.
