Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: What's up, everybody?
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: It's your good friend,
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Lukie, and I'm back with another podcast on November 1st, the day after Halloween.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Trick or treat to some of you.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Halloween scary movies.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: People love horror films lately, so we could get into that later, Dakota.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: But Dakota, how are you doing?
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: I'm doing good, my friend.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Coming off of a pretty wild stretch of work.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Happy to just be taking a little downtime for a minute.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: That is good to hear.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: I'm going to do my opening monologue,
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: and I'm going to almost assume you did not watch the fights this week
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: because they're behind a paywall, right?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: And it's not just any paywall.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: It's DAZN has a paywall.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: It's behind two paywalls.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: But essentially what DAZN's model to me looks like is with a $10 difference between
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: the regular subscription now,
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: I believe,
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: and the ultimate subscription now,
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Basically,
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: if you want to see pay-per-views,
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: you're getting to a point where you have to pay $45 a month because
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: the pay-per-views are now becoming the subscription.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: That's what it feels almost as though.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: My frustration as a fight fan before I get
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: into this monologue is it feels like we have a smaller
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: and smaller niche audience who's not every year they're saying,
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: you know, I can go without boxing.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Boxing is not quite giving me exactly what I want.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: It's not giving me maybe that traditional sport feel.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And what boxing is doing is it's like The people in the middle
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: that are not maybe fully invested, but they're like, I like boxing.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I want to watch a fight every other Tuesday or every other Saturday.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Now they're making those people question in a rough economic climate what the freak is going on.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: But The big thing I want to talk about this fight was with Christian and Billy
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: and Canelo Alvarez, the fight was very simple, right?
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: When you looked at the fight and you saw what the fight was, the fight came down to two things.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: There were two ways the fight could have gone to most people, at least, or at least to me.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: You either expected it to be a fight.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Where Canelo's made a ton of money and he's fighting this young guy and
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: the young guy's going to have youthful energy and Canelo's going to be like,
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: at this point in my career,
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: I just don't want to fight a young guy and I don't want a guy who's physical
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: and doing all this stuff just hang out.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Or some of the reckless aggression that Mbili has kind of plays into Canelo Alvarez's hands.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: He leans forward.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: He's a, I kind of call him a Nordic track type fighter.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: He sets a pace.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: He sets a six-minute mile,
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: a five-minute mile, and you got to keep up, and that's part of his fighting style.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Yes, he has an Olympic background.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: He was a French Olympian in 2016, one of the better French Olympic boxing teams, might I add.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: But that being said,
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: you could see vulnerabilities,
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: and you could also look at the thing I'm going to talk about, experience.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And Billy, despite the pedigree, he's not someone that's had a 21-year pro career.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: He's not someone that's been in marquee fights since 2013.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: I believe the Austin Trout fight was in 2013.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: He just quite simply has not been in this level of fight consistently at
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: the highest level of the sport year in, year out.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: He's never been in this level of fight ever,
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: if I'm not mistaken,
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: you know, when you get to the very, very elite level of your division.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, he was in a very good fight, if we're going to be honest.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: He was in a great fight with Lester Martinez.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: But that was a fight between two undefeated guys who looked like top-notch fighters.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And I felt the sentiment from a lot of people was Lester probably should have won the fight.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: And Billy kind of tired in the second half of the fight.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: And the fight left with an impression of,
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Lester Martinez, interesting hard puncher, Christian and Billy.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Is he a guy who's really reckless and going to push a pace?
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Or when he got to that stage, was he just so frigging excited?
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: He just wanted to fight a certain way and that carried over.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Well, in this fight, And our guy, obviously, Martin Mulligan.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: We love him.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Fantastic to catch the boys live.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Great pod.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Thank you for tuning in live.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: We love that you're live, especially overseas.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: The thing that stood out to me about this fight,
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: and I can break it down because I'm assuming you didn't see it, was
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: The tension of the fight was the first four rounds.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: You could have made a case that it was 2-2.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: But at a certain point,
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: the counterpunching and the intelligence of Canelo Alvarez was unlike anything
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: and Billy had ever seen.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: It felt as though he was unable to predict what was coming back.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: He was unable to see the shots fully.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: And what happened is his hand started going in his pockets.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: And he started waiting.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And when Nbili is waiting, I feel like Canelo is going to be a guy that's going to go, I gotcha.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: And as Jason Langendorf said in the Good Fight pod yesterday,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: he fainted an overhand right, pulled back, and Nbili reacted.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: And when you've got a guy like Nbili,
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: who is probably his biggest attribute is his engine and his willingness to exchange,
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: when he's reacting to every single punch, Dakota, I don't think that's a good place.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: So Canelo...
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Within the first four to five rounds made Mbili have to respect what he was doing.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: And that just completely took the fight out of Mbili.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: And I think that the intrigue to this matchup was can Mbili...
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Answer some questions about Canelo and force him to have to work in a way we haven't seen.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And the answer to that question was, no,
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Canelo's actually experienced enough,
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: smart enough,
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: and a good enough counterpuncher that he'll break you down
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: and he'll make you fight his fight.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And I think that it's the type of fight that kind of shocks people,
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: where they go, oh man, Canelo, actually pretty good.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: So that's my initial thoughts on this.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Well, and I think because of maybe...
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: I think that there's been a little bit of a rush to say that Canelo's shot.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: And so if Canelo's shot or he's on the back end or whatever,
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: then somebody like him, Billy, that intensity is just going to be too much.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: And it's weird to me how the Crawford fight has sort of been used as that,
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: where it's like he lost the decision to maybe the best fighter of his era.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: And somehow that's an indicator that he doesn't have it anymore.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: And I kind of I view this part of Canelo's career.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: He's not the 2022 Canelo, but it's the Pacquiao Bradley three part of his career.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: He's still going to be a guy that's going to be very difficult to deal with
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: unless you're at the absolute elite elite of the sport.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: And just from the highlights that I was able to see,
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: it looked like his feet looked pretty good.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: He didn't look as flat-footed as maybe he's looked in some recent fights.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: There were some faster combinations where he has been sort of a sit-down
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: on one good one more often than not in his last few fights.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: So it looked like,
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: at least in the spots that I was able to watch,
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: that he was switching it up and maybe even mixing up what he's done in the last year
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: or two.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Well, to me,
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: the thing was,
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: I think that what helped was there was a belief that Mbilly was coming forward.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: And this was a fight where I think that after the Bivol fight,
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: what Canelo took away from the Bivol fight was I loaded up too much and I got tired
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: in the second half of the fight.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Well, I think this was one of the first opponents,
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: maybe outside of maybe a Berlanga or a Munguia,
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: where he knows the guy's coming forward and he could let go fluid combinations.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And I think that what we saw here was...
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: He knew he had to land certain punches to make this his type of fight.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: And then by about the seventh or eighth round,
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: it was just clear that Canelo was going to dominate The interesting thing
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: about it was it was a competitive fight through four rounds,
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: but in many ways it wasn't,
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: if that makes sense,
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: because Mbili wasn't able to keep up with what Canelo was doing,
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: the feints, the trickery.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: But I think a lot of that just goes to this is
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: a 21-year-old pro boxer who's very calm in these situations and has a belief,
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: whereas Mbili is still very young in his career.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Yes, he's a world champion, but he actually didn't really Who did he beat to become champion?
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: Canelo, I think, is still a competitor.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: I've been pretty critical of Canelo,
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: but I think that that's a criticism he gets that I don't always agree with.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: That somehow he's lost the competitive edge.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Because if you lose the competitive edge, this is the kind of guy that beats you.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Or at least gives you a hard time.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And I think that was the shock to some.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: That was the perception some people had of Canelo.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: And this is the type of guy where they thought that it was going to be an exciting fight.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: And I think Canelo shut those doubts down.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: But I also think some of the people tuning in wanted to see that type of fight
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: or wanted to see a competitive fight.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: And Canelo just made this his fight.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: You know, he was sharp, fluid with combination punching, counter punching.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: And he just kind of took in Billy's will to win away.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: And Billy could have been in the fight in the second half,
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: but he had to make a decision that he might get knocked out in that second half.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And it's hard to knock out a guy that doesn't want to get knocked out.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And then Billy didn't want to put himself in harm's way.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of like a lot of the Canelo fights we've seen post Bivol, right?
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Canelo's fine to win a fight where you make an agreement to be like,
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: okay, I'll stay at a certain distance.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: You can control the action,
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: but you're not going to ramp up too much and I'm not going to ramp up too much.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And it felt like that agreement got made in the ninth round.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Canelo, I feel like at this point in his career,
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: he doesn't want to breathe hard in those final rounds.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: So if you don't make him work, he's like, I know the pace I got to work at.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: But I also think, bro, I still think he's hitting.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: I still think he hits really hard.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: And I think that even somebody like Mbili,
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: who's as tough as he is,
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: is not going to have that same reckless abandon with a Canelo that he might have
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: with, you know, Macias Zaleski.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Well, it's not just that I think he's hitting.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: He's hitting,
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: he's faster than you expect,
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: and these are different type of combinations coming in each and every time.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: So I think that there's a guy who punches, but then there's also the fast twitch to it.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: That he's able to dip and slip and come with punches.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And it's the fact that sometimes it's right uppercut left hook.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's overhand right left to the body.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: I think that what makes Canelo scary,
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: especially for a pressure fighter at this stage,
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: and especially if you thought you were maybe going to be more physical with him,
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Is the concept that you were going to go in there and you were going to bully him
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: and then you're going in and you're seeing different punches,
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: different combinations.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Or that you're going to go body to body with him and he's just going to go, OK, here we go.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Whereas with Canelo, he still takes those little baby steps back.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: He has a great understanding of his range,
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: even in the pocket, just because you get chest to chest with him.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: He's not just going to give that to you.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: When it's like, to me,
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: that's a great thing,
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: the half step, because those great counter punchers do that half step.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, he does it beautiful.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: And he kind of turns off the angle, too.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: So he opens up your body like he'll turn off.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: But I think the big thing with him is.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: I'm saying the same thing over and over,
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: but when he counter punches, it's like he's got different codes he's given you.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: So go like right uppercut, left hook, left to the body, overhand, right.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: And it's like the worst thing you can do is guess wrong
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: because you're He's probably going to get knocked down because he's really punching.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: And I think that that's how he's freezing guys is it's the power.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: It's the ability to be first in exchanges when guys are trying to press.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: And then it's the fact that he's not just throwing the same combinations.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, listen, he's an all-time great.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: He's probably the last of a certain type of guy that has so many fights.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm sure there'll be more, but he's an all-time great.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: And I think that like Mayweather and like a lot of the all-time greats,
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: he is complicated a little bit.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: We feel multiple things about him.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: Like I've kind of not taken him off of my pound for pound list because I think that
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: until he really gets it beaten out of him, that the body of work speaks for itself.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: I gave him credit for the Munguia fight and the Berlanga fight simply because,
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: you know, there's guys that go and play the hits.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: He's still fighting young guys, even if it's the fifth or sixth best option.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: You know, at least he's still taking somewhat well.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: He's not Usyk fighting a kickboxer.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: He's not doing the clown show just yet.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: But he did duck David Benavidez.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: I think that's pretty much a unanimous.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: He won't fight Iglesias more than likely because that's a scary guy.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: So there's a certain line like Mayweather that he's not willing
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: to cross competitively to give up those types of advantages with Crawford was less
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: of a physical threat than a tactical threat.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: And maybe he is willing to take a tactical threat more than he is willing to take
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: a physical threat.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: And You know,
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: I've spent so much of his career,
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: we've been watching him now at high levels,
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: you know, for like damn near 18, 17 years at this point.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: And at the same time,
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: he's just not entirely accessible at this point to a lot of fans,
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: including a fan like me,
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: who that niche audience you're talking about that often,
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: if not always, would have included me at one time, but I've kind of been priced out.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: And on top of that,
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: The circumstances of the fight I, like a lot of people, am uncomfortable with.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: And so he gives you a lot of reasons to feel kind of yucky or at a minimum to just tune him out.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Well, and I think the other thing to talk about too is punching
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: the bicep again looks like it's taking effect.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Good point by Martin Mulligan.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Also, Rob James in the chat, Bivel versus Smith.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Kakache vs. Ball, Fury vs. Joshua.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Some decent fights coming up.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: You got it.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: We just stick right here and we're going to talk about each and every one each and every week.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: We do a weekly wrap-up boxing show and if you love boxing, this is the place to be.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: A couple of things I wanted to touch on is I think that Mbili always was kind
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: of like He's tailor-made for the young prime Canelo.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Like, I think that a lot of people compared him, Billy, sort of, to James Kirkland.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: I think he's a little bit more dynamic than Kirkland.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: And he hasn't shown the same chin issues as Kirkland.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Kirkland got dropped.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: I think he's more dynamic and maybe a little bit less of a one-punch hitter.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like, there's a give and take to it.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: I think Kirkland had some very big danger to what he did.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: But I do think that, like, this was a calculated risk.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Is that, like,
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: and Billy's the type of guy that, like,
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: the guys that Canelo doesn't seem to want to fight are either guys
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: that are either physically bigger than him or guys that he's going to have to look
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: for.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Like, he doesn't want to fight a
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: guy that he's going to have to
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: look for.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: But I want to propose...
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: But it's also not Floyd fighting Andre Berto or Conor McGregor.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: It's not that either.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: No, and I think that...
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: This was an interesting fight because there was a realistic scenario
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: that Canelo could lose this and have two straight losses on his record.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: And that would have basically finished the deal for him being a reputable fighter at
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: the highest level.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: This was basically his career was on the line, in my opinion, in this fight to a certain degree.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: And he looked amazing.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: He looked like a top five super middleweight.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Now, They don't know him.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: I don't think they know him, bro.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's just a, he's a phenomenal fighter, but I want to get to this.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: So the first thing I thought of, obviously after Canelo wins, you think
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: what's next,
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: right?
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: That's what we always do.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: What's next.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: So what I want to ask you Dakota is to me, what's next, at least in my harebrained brain.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: The possibility of Terrence Crawford coming out of retirement
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: to rematch Canelo Alvarez seems like a fight that for Canelo he would really want
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: because that was a pretty embarrassing loss to lose to
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: a guy moving up multiple weight classes and get kind of outboxed and schooled.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Is there any possibility or chance that that's where Canelo tries to go
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: the next year to try to tempt Crawford out of retirement?
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Or do you think this is just a harebrained idea from me?
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: I just think it's unlikely.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: I really do take Terrence at his word when he says he's done.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: What I think is maybe more likely is that at least for the moment,
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: It doesn't look like we're going to get a third fight between Betherby and Bevel.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: And so should Bevel beat Callum Smith,
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: maybe he views now as as good of an opportunity as ever to get a rematch with Bevel.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: That's just me talking out of my ass.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: But it would also be something that I as a fan would be interested in.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just think that the level of inactivity with Bevel,
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: I think that that would just be a hard fight for both fighters
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: because they're both not...
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: I think that if he's got a tough out coming up himself,
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: I don't think that that's like necessarily an easy fight with Callum Smith.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: And then the styles make fights.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: I think it's a harder fight.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: I think Callum Smith is a harder fight for Beavle than he was for better be of stylistically.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah,
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: because you got like better B was the naturally bigger puncher when he fought him
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: and Bivol's going to actually have to work the whole time.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: It's a little bit longer, a little bit further along in the road.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: So things aren't just A and B for that.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: But one of the big things that I wanted to also talk about was Hamza Shiraz.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: he hasn't looked all that great,
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: but he kind of fits the bill of a guy who's been on these high profile cards
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: and Kind of looks vulnerable, but he's been put in this superstar spot.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, is there a possibility?
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Because I really think Canelo,
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: if it's possible, would try to get the Crawford fight if Crawford's coming back.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, with the way boxing's going,
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: that's the fight that will get made if the Saudis are kind of pulling rank on
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: who Canelo fights or they're willing to...
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: They're ultimately the ones willing to put up the kind of money
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: that Canelo's interested in to fight their guys.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: And they've shown a real willingness to give Hamza Shiraz as many chances
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: or opportunities as he needs.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Then that's probably the fight that's going to happen.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: It also checks the boxes of,
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: while it is a flawed kind of vulnerable guy,
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: it is still an unbeaten, younger fighter in his prime.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: That would still essentially be an impressive win for Canelo at 36,
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: you know, pushing 70 fights into his career.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: It would still make that statement.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: It's just not necessarily the fight that I would pick,
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: but it looks like based on the landscape that that makes the most sense.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, to me... Or is the most likely, not makes the most sense athletically.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: If I were to look at the next two Canelo fights,
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: my guess would be Shiraz would probably be the next fight.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: And then Canelo would really try to go...
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: For a Crawford rematch.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: If Crawford has the itch and wants to come back.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: And I think that would be both guys riding to the sunset.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: That would be, let's do one more fight.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Let's call it a day.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: And I think the idea for that fight to lure Crawford back possibly would be like,
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Crawford, you're a guy that never got your respect during your career.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Come back, do your victory lap, get your praise as one of the best of your generation.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Get a big old check.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: Get a big check.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: But I think part of it too would be Come back and get your praise as one of the best
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: of your era, which you never fully got.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: And that would be the incentive along with the money.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: Come back and get your praise.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: But this was
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: the part of the
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: sport that I feel like Floyd kind
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: of fucked up too was it's like,
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: You know, at another time, it just would inevitably be Canelo and Iglesias.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: And the torch would either get passed or Canelo would hang on to the torch
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: for another however long he stays active.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: And it's just like we're taking,
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: one of the greats of his era and like dancing around the fact that he won't fight
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: the very best.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: He'll take calculated quality fights.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Benavidez had to leave the division.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: It's like Benavidez had to take things into his own hand.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: That's the conflicting feelings about Canelo.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: It's like Benavidez didn't get that opportunity after waiting years and years,
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: and everyone wanted to see that fight.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: And he had to go to light heavyweight and now go to cruiserweight.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: And he had to basically do his own thing.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: And I think Iglesias will probably...
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Try his best to get as many belts at super middleweight,
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: but more than likely he's one of those scary guys that's going to have to move up
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: a weight class and show some vulnerabilities to even get a fight.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Because I think that... Yeah.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: And because he's not the cash cow,
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: ultimately all of those guys,
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: even if he's the best in the division,
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: they're all going to be holding out for the Canelo fight until he retires.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: They're not holding out for the Iglesias fight.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: So if there's a line of guys to get the big fight,
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: It's with Canelo and that would include Pacheco,
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: Shiraz, you know, any of these young unbeaten guys right now.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: So my next question to you is, this is a good one for you.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Are you ready for this?
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: It's a good one.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Hope so.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Well, we're going to go undercard after this.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: But like, is this just a conspiracy lukie thing that Crawford Canelo is going to be mentioned?
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Or do you think this is going to be something that gets traction?
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: I would kind of defer to you on that one,
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: having not watched the card and just having any time,
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: you know, I've seen Terrence talk about it.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: It just seems like he's happy to be retired.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: And if Canelo was going to take a Shiraz fight,
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: guys fight every six, seven months, that would mean that I just don't see it.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: But I would defer to you if you think that that's actually realistic or not.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: No one's really brought it up,
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: but I just feel like that's a loss that's really going to hurt Canelo's legacy to
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: a certain extent, is that you're the naturally bigger man.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: You fought this guy.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: It makes Terrence Crawford look like a Henry Armstrong figure, but there is an aspect...
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: Which he is.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: He is like a Henry Armstrong.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Just don't say that to the nerds because they'll be like, I
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: hate you so much.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: He's not from the 1930s.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Damn it.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: It's real to me.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: But...
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: To me, Canelo, there was always that sentiment after the Bivol fight.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Like the opposition, who is he fighting?
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: Why is it this opponent?
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: Why not Benavidez?
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: And I feel like the Crawford fight kind of,
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: if you had questions about what Canelo was doing and you felt Canelo was
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: a businessman,
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: I feel like that loss kind of like confirms it and it helps arguments for that.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: And I think Canelo, like you said, the competitor is underrated.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: I feel like if he can get that back, he wants to kind of, he's a guy that really
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: wants that.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: But what makes you think that Terrence is interested in giving him that?
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Well, I think that's the interesting thing.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: To me, Terrence Crawford strikes me as an Andre Ward where when he says he's done, he's done.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: But the interesting thing about the whole thing is Andre never had the face of boxing before.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Possibly calling him out.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: So what's interesting about the equation is I think Crawford's done.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: But when you have someone that's the biggest star in boxing,
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: the biggest moneymaker in boxing,
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: arguably, and he might be focused potentially on, I want to get revenge on you.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: There could be a lot of money.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: There could be a lot of prestige.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: There could be a lot that comes with that.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: And if you start to get an itch to want to come back, that could be interesting.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: So I just think it's more than...
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we'll see.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: As the cash cow, he's got plenty of options.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: Now we're going to go undercard.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: We know Dakota loves this undercard.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: This undercard, Dakota, you missed absolutely nothing.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: It was a really underwhelming undercard.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: I feel like this undercard looked this way because Canelo's paid a lot of money
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: and it just sucks the air out of the whole card.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Like when you have a guy that's just making a ton of money,
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: you have to just put on fights for whatever budget you can do it.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Well, and that cello well is, you know, it's drying up.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: It's gradual, but it's drying up.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: So Jaime Munguia fought Nikita Zahn.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: I had never seen Nikita Zahn.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: This is a classic Jaime Munguia career thing.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: I was writing about this for my boxing results, which I'll finish when I'm done here.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, Munguia came out probably about nine years ago,
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: eight or nine years ago,
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: beats Saddam Ali,
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: was in the running to land the Golovkin fight before Vanez Martirosian,
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: and then he beats Liam Smith.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: And we're like, whoa, another Mexican fighter at or around Canelo's weight.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: He's young.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: And then he almost loses to Dennis Hogan.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: And it's just been a career of pretty much uninteresting opponents from that point.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: When he does fight a Sergei Davianchenko, he feels very old.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: He fought John Ryder, I think, in Ryder's last fight of his career.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: They're good, but not great.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: Rosato gave him a close one.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: But it's like Rosato is also like an older fighter who was coming off of Beck.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm saying.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: There's another older guy who's giving him a hard time.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: So I feel like the frustration I've always had with Munguia is he doesn't have
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: a style that I felt like was going to be an unbeaten boxer.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: And we see that with Bruno Saras.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Bruno Saras knocks him out.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: But...
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: He was matched very carefully.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: And to me, it's like he's a guy that you...
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: He's going to be in fun fights, right?
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: He's a fun fight guy, yet he was matched in these fights that don't make fun fights.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: They're not impactful fights.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: And when they are fun fights, they feel like they're accidentally fun fights.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: And in the co-feature, we got another one where he's in with Nikita Zahn.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Zahn moves a little bit, boxed a little bit.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: He felt like a high-level amateur converting to the pros.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: But what was troubling was he stood there with Munguia at times,
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: and he got the better of Munguia.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: And they had probably the round of the year in round six.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: They both buzz each other, and they're just beating the hell out of each other.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: And who knows, Nikita Zahn could go on to be a phenomenal fighter.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: But the optics of this fight, to me,
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: summarize Jaime Munguia's career,
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: where he's fighting an opponent that's utterly uninteresting after a great win
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: over Armando Resendez.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: And what does he do?
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: He's struggling with a guy that I'm probably never going to see on television again.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: And it just summarizes my level of just blah situation.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: With Jaime Munguia,
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: whenever I'm slightly compelled or like, OK,
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: he's turning a corner,
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: he takes an uninspiring opponent and the level of interest I have in
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: the fight is matched by the performance he puts on.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: Well, I felt like in the like I was I'm looking at his boxer again since the Rosado fight.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: It felt like he was approaching a more complete type of a fighter.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: He wasn't getting hit quite as much.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: I remember him looking good against Derevyan Chayko.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: That fight was close, but Sergei still had some juice left.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Older guy, but the Ballard fight was pretty impressive.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: I remember there was just performances where
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: it looked like he was getting closer to that thing.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: And then he has the Canelo fight.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: It doesn't go his way, but, you know, I felt like he competed.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: I felt like the Bazinian fight,
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: but since he was okay in that fight,
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: but since the Sarasi fight, he really just looks way more vulnerable now.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm starting to question his chin.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: I saw that stretch of the sixth round where he was damn near knocked out.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Like, he hasn't always looked that chinny and vulnerable.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: And it feels like something,
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: like the drywall finally fell in that Sarase fight because he got hit so much
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: and had so many fights.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: But I can't really tell.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: All I know is that I don't remember him getting almost knocked out
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: in every single one of those fights.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: And it just looks like he's transitioning maybe either into an older fighter or just
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: a shopworn fighter.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just to me,
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: you see Canelo at the top of the card and you see Munguia
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: and you'd probably think their ages were the opposite.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: You'd probably think Canelo was 30 and Munguia was 36.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: And even though he holds a belt and Canelo holds a belt,
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: it just doesn't feel like they're on the same planet.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: And it's like Munguia just feels like a guy that...
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: It also doesn't feel like Munguia is serious about fighting his contemporaries,
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: be it Pacheco or Iglesias or Mbili or Lester.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: It just doesn't look like he's in the mix for that.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, he just missed his era, right?
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: It's like he's an exciting Mexican boxer who fought
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: in three different exciting weight classes,
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: junior middleweight, middleweight, and now super middleweight.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: And we really haven't even gotten that many great fights.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: His great fight is probably against Derivianchenko.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: And Derivianchenko was probably about 37 or 36 when he fought him.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's good.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: But it's like I feel like Munguia is a type of guy where we were expecting him to be
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: in with another guy at or around his age and possibly give us a Morales Barrera.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: We're almost at the end of his career.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: I was sitting here and I was like,
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: if I were to be a Hall of Fame voter,
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: I don't think Munguia goes to the Hall of Fame.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: It's like this fight kind of sums up everything that's wrong with Munguia's career is
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: He won the fight, right?
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: He won the fight,
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: but the optics of the fight are going to look awful because you expected him
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: to absolutely win this one-sided because you've never heard of this guy
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: and Munguia's been in your life for so long.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: And it's the type of fight where a naive fan would go, you know, he probably lost, right?
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Because the naivete, they go, because they didn't expect the other guy to do so well.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: But, I mean...
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: To me, it's very frustrating.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: It's frustrating just seeing a performance like this.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's in general, I think, been a somewhat disappointing career for Mungu.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: I think that there was greater expectations for what he would do.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: And it also, beyond having a hard fight, there's nothing wrong with having a hard fight.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: It's having a hard fight while it looks like you're going out of your way to not take risks.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: Well said.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: The rest of the undercard can be kind of summed up quickly.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: We had Rafael Espinosa.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: Who's this guy Espinosa was fighting, Lukie?
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: Talk to me about that.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: Rafael Espinosa fought the number 15th ranked guy in his division.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: Lorenzo Parra,
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: which I thought was actually an interesting fight
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: because Lorenzo Parra had knocked out Elijah Pierce in February.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: You know, he's a puncher.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: Probably not on the same level as Espinosa,
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: but Espinosa is starting to get give me Jaime Munguia feels
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: because it's like Espinosa is starting to do all this singing stuff.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: He gets up there and he sings songs and I love it.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: He sings the songs.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: But is it really that hard to unify in this frigging division?
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: We got Bruce Carrington and Angelo Leo in a vacant belt.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: None of those guys scream.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: Like, huge money.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: Like, we can't make these fights.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: That seems like doable unification fights.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: He's singing Canelo to Canelo when Canelo's weighing in,
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: which just kind of gave me little bro energy.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: Didn't love that.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: You know, you're on the fight card and you're singing him.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure why it bothers me so much, but that actually did bother me.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: And then he's fighting.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: He goes from fighting Parra to fighting the number 15 guy in the rankings
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: to Super uninspired performance.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: It just felt like he he gets hit a little bit in the beginning
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: because he doesn't care about what's coming back.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: And then he cuts him and beats him up and the fight stopped.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: But like he's starting to hit the tread and water point like
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: the kid Vasquez performance was good.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: There were B.C.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: Ramirez wins, especially the second one was good.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: But like between his inactivity and the fact
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: that we're not getting unification bouts,
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: the level of excitement I have with Espinoza year by year is really frustrating.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: And that's his first fight in 26, Lukie.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: That's his first fight.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: More than likely his only fight in 26.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm saying.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: So when that's your only performance,
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: it does get to be a little like, well, what are we doing here?
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: And he's arguably the best guy in the division on the eye test.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: And, you know, maybe Leo will fight before the year's over, but Leo might not fight this year.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: And Carrington only fought in January.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: We really need this division to have guys fighting each other.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: Because it's just like, this division is not active.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: It's like middleweight.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: Well, and...
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: All of a sudden, trickle-down effect, every division will be like that soon, right?
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: But Featherweight needs some active champions.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: And Espinoza, I was hoping, would be that guy.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: But then this fight does nothing for the division.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: It's a late sub who is suitable to fight because of his ranking, but offered no resistance.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: And that's the only fight he gets this year.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: It was a mismatch.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: And it's fine when you do the singing, right?
- 35:40SPEAKER_00: But it sets a bad tone to me as a fight fan when you're singing your heart out
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: and you just had a mismatch.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: It doesn't seem just as cool, right?
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it seems like that's the one you save for when it's Shushu.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just like I think he's an interesting character because he's 6'3",
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: making the featherweight limit.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: He's got an exciting style.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: And then the fact that he basically can sing really well is interesting.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: But I don't know,
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: maybe I'm just old and I just like fighters fighting,
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: but it's like certain fights are like, let's just get through this fight.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: And it's like,
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: we don't need your personality to shine through too much
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: because you basically have every physical advantage over this guy
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: and it almost comes off as fully energy.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: I have less of an issue with it if I feel like you really are that.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: Like when,
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: like there's fighters where you know, like Navarrete, I know he'll fight anybody.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: And has shown that through his career.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: Like we're still figuring out what the reign of Rafael Espinoza is going to look like.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: And it seems like he's having a good time, a grand old time for somebody who's not in the ring.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: He's having a good hang and he looks like he's really enjoying himself.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: And I think that's more the optics is it's like you seem a little too happy to be there.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: Right, which on one hand is great,
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: but it's like for us as the fans,
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: I think that these guys,
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: like part of how they stay so inactive is they kind of live in their own world
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: where they think everybody's thinking about them.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: And it's like, bro, you haven't fought in 11 months.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: I'm not walking around thinking about like what you're going to do next.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, the chat said Beck the bully would, would maybe beat Munguia, be a great fight.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, to me,
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: that's a 50 50 fight because they're super,
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: they're vulnerable, but that's the type of fight.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: I feel like Munguia,
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: that should be a no hesitation fight because that's like the type of fight
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: where you get a fight of the year.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: I think Munguia could win it if he lands.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: I think Beck could win.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: But I mean,
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: that's an actually exciting fight that says, hey,
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Beck the bully in 2020 was looked at as this can't-miss prospect and he kind
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: of never regained that steam.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: Can Beck fulfill his promise?
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: Or can Munguia beat a guy that's hungry to challenge him?
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Because honestly,
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: I can't think of that many guys who are young,
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: hungry guys or younger-ish that were ranked that took a shot at him.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: Is there any chance he goes after the winner of Pacheco and Fulgham?
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think him and Diego Pacheco would be a really good L.A. fight.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: I think Pacheco versus Munguia.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: And I think that that's also...
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: A perfect fight for both because Munguia does present a style that Diego Pacheco
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: at times has shown a discomfort with is that pressure style.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: So like I think my frustration with Munguia is he could be a lot better than we think he is.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: He just doesn't take the fights for us to assess him.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: And then the when he has off nights, he looks really off.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: So I think that.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: That's the frustration is I think he has almost borderline Hall of Fame ability
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: with his ability to punch and be physical, but we don't get it.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: We don't get these moments.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: We don't get these fights.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: And his career is closer to being done than starting.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: So it's just frustrating.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: And then Mankey Crazy says, you don't like his singing.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: It's not necessarily about the singing of Espinosa.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: I think he's a technically fine singer.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: It's more the sentiment when the best fights aren't being made.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: And you're consistently the singing guy on the stage.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: There's a lack of awareness that we're more excited
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: about you being this big fighter who's a dominant force in the division rather than
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: the singing guy at the press conference.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: When we don't get the unification bouts or the best fights with up-and-comers,
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: it starts to rub me the wrong way.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: I won't lie.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: And then the final fight I wanted to touch on this card, obviously, Tetsumi looks like a star.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: He got a knockout.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: He looked really good.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: The pacing on this pay-per-view, per usual, was atrocious.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: It was just like a full day waster.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: But Carl, Joms, Martin, the Wonder Boy,
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: defeated by split decision David Picasso.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: Picasso dropped Martin, but...
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Martin was able to pick it out.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: This was just two guys at featherweight running into each other.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: I had a feeling and I hate being that guy.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm a boxing expert.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: I picked something right.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: I think that's the most cringy thing ever to do that.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: But Picasso's coming off that fight with Neo in a way where he probably did better
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: than he should have.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: If we're being honest, he probably did better than he should have.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: He took punches in that fight.
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: And then again, against Azat Hovenissian and Kameda, he didn't look all that great.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: And it felt like after taking those punches and making the decision to go the rounds
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: with Inouye,
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: I was not going to be shocked if Picasso slowly starts to show decline
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: because normally when guys overachieve against a great fighter,
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: they tend to decline.
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: And Martin to me is a very, very limited guy.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: He's physical and tough and rugged.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: But I mean, he's just able to go punch for punch with Picasso.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: And on this given night,
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: I thought I thought Picasso probably won the fight, but it was like a flip a coin.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Neither guy is like separating themselves.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: It wasn't a strong performance from either, but at least Martin walks away with a notable win.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: Whereas Picasso, you know, he's now lost two of his last three fights.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean,
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: maybe he emptied the clip against Inouye,
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: and Inouye also hits hard enough that we don't entirely know what
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: the ramifications are for him physically from that.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: But I think Shutsumi's probably the guy that's the most exciting,
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: like, in terms of moving forward on the card.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: But it's just like...
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of great fighters on there,
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: bro, but it's just crazy to me that that's the undercard for a double paywall.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's just, it's crazy.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it wasn't centrally.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: And let's go over to this week on Sunday.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: We have Alicia Bumgardner going to lightweight to fight the lightweight champion,
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Alif Norturhan.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: Bumgardner is a star in American boxing.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: She obviously works with Derek James now.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: I believe Julian Shoa works with her as well.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: She has, I think she's been so hot take Lukie.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: I think she's looking better as a recent working with Derek.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: I know I've told you this privately,
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: but I think she's conserving energy and not having to do as much to win rounds.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: I think that In some of those flashy performances,
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: say against,
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: like against Michaela Mayer,
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: she won early rounds and then gassed out and Mayer really had a lot of success in
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: that second half of the fight, right?
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: Against the last fighter she fought where you were there for some of the fight,
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: she was able to take breaks and she didn't have to exert herself as much
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: and she could win rounds without using as much energy and I credit Derek for doing
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: that.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: This is an interesting matchup because Elif Norturhan was my women's boxer
- 43:20SPEAKER_00: the year last year.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of people view her as a relative novice who hits hard and she's going
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: to hit a certain level and just lose to every fighter ever.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: I think that there is some real danger to her because she knocked out Shauna Brown
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: in a fight that I think a lot of people expected her to lose.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: She knocked Shauna Brown out in 45 seconds.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: She beat the hell out of Beatrice Sierra.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: She's followed those two performances up with subpar at best performances.
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: I think the fight against Sosa Gabriela Talese was very underwhelming.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: And I believe she fought Tayla Jensen.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: Is that the name?
- 43:59SPEAKER_00: The Australian fighter.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: That was also subpar.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: So I feel like there's also...
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Possibly a belief that, you know, at least maybe from Bumgarner's side that she's struggling.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: You know, Teron is not nearly as confident and I can get some titles.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: If she were to win this,
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: all signs point to a Caroline Dubois match between Bumgarner and Dubois.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: But I think that people might be overlooking this could be a really hard fight
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: for Alicia Bumgarner.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: Bumgarner's... Yeah,
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: I can't tell if it's just going to be a levels fight where Alicia is just too sharp
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: in every category or if...
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: The recklessness and the willingness to kind of push that tempo and not allow Alicia
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: to stay in her comfort zone.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: If it's going to look like the Ferreira fight where it's just
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: a fighter that's technically much better that just did not expect
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: that somebody would throw something so reckless at them.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I think the...
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: The thing with Turhan is it's easy to underestimate her
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: because everything she does isn't traditional, but she has to hit extremely hard.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: And I think the one thing that you and me have questioned with Bumgarner is
- 45:08SPEAKER_00: that she has found a sense of fame and she's really enjoyed this level of fame.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: And when you get in with a big physical fighter who hits hard,
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: It can question your desires and motivations in the sport.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: So for me,
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: if she wins a level fight here,
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: she's a very,
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: very special fighter because she has to do it while protecting the comforts
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: that she has and knowing that this could be a hard fight.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't be shocked if it also flips the other way and it turns into a really,
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: really strange fight.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: I think one interesting thing is Bumgarner at one point was known as the puncher.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: I'm curious how her power impacts Turhan because everyone's assuming Turhan's
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: the bigger puncher in this fight because of how she hits.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: But people are forgetting that there was a time where she knocked out Terry Harper
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: with one punch.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: And in the Mikayla fight, she was keeping Mikayla honest early because of the fear of the power.
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: Well, I think Turhan probably is the bigger puncher, but she leaves herself very open.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: And the question is going to be, you know, can Alicia kind of work with those openings?
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: Interesting comment from our guy, Mankey Crazy.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: Turan to gas out in three minute rounds.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's a real possibility of that because she throws to me.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: I also see a world where it's like kind of a stinker
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: because Turan doesn't close range traditionally.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: And I could see at least early there being a lot of holding and pushing and shoving around.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: It's just a, it's to me, it's a high level fight.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: I credit to both for taking it because it's just a really interesting fight.
- 46:46SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 46:48SPEAKER_00: Kind of speaks to where women's boxing's been for the past couple of years,
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: where women's boxing is delivering where men's boxing isn't.
- 46:55SPEAKER_00: You know, the men can't deliver the fights, yet here we are.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: Two of the best fighters in the lightweight division are fighting,
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: and then more than likely next year,
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: Caroline Dubois will fight the winner at some point.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you know,
- 47:09SPEAKER_01: one of the best possible matchups in boxing was going to be on this with Scott
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: and Ian Brown.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: It's too bad that's not going to happen,
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: but Yeah, I think that it still behaves like a sport more than men's boxing.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's a shame that we don't get to see that.
- 47:25SPEAKER_00: Obviously, Tiara Brown is someone that we think really highly of and Ellis Goatney, too.
- 47:29SPEAKER_00: They're actually probably two of my top five favorite women's boxers to watch and
- 47:33SPEAKER_00: the fact that they were going to fight.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: On this undercard, also, we got Makaya Crepes versus Ramla Ali.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: That is a vacant title fight.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: Just quick analysis.
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: Would you like me to read through the fights and then we'll summarize them?
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, go for it.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: So, Makaya Crepes has taken on...
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: Ramla Ali, I guess I'll give my analysis that it just feels like Ali has hit a wall as a pro.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: It feels like she's never really been able to keep people honest and she's just kind
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: of too much of an amateur style box and it feels like this is going to probably be
- 48:09SPEAKER_00: We got Sky Nicholson taking on Maya Yoshida, someone that you know pretty well, at 122 pounds.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: That's a good fight.
- 48:19SPEAKER_00: Fight that I think is sneaky,
- 48:21SPEAKER_00: sneaky good is 45-year-old Irma Garcia, who's a champion, taking on Natalie Delgado.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: Kind of two people that would be traditionally viewed as B-side opponent-type fighters.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: In a unification women's bout, I think that's kind of fun.
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: I think Irma Garcia is a really interesting story this year.
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: I favor her to win by knockout.
- 48:41SPEAKER_00: And then Brittany Sims is taking on Cheramay Patricio for the WBA, the vacant title.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: And Cheramay Patricio is one of the best amateurs in women's boxing,
- 48:52SPEAKER_00: really, since that's been a thing, since 2012.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: Well, I guess to start,
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: I'll touch on kind of the two fighters that I have a bit of a connection to.
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: Obviously, I did an episode as we lose Lukie.
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: I did an episode of the Fight Life on ITR Boxing with Mio Yoshida,
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: who's got a great story coming to New York City from Japan and making a name
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: for herself out here,
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: getting the win over Ebony Bridges in an upset a couple of years ago.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: But since the two...
- 49:27SPEAKER_01: Controversial losses to,
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: of course,
- 49:31SPEAKER_01: I'm going to forget her name, but who's the girl that beat Mio that we've had on?
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: Shredda Metcalf.
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: Shredda Metcalf.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: Since those fights,
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: it's been very hard for Mio to stay active because of her sort of like being
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: the mandatory situation.
- 49:47SPEAKER_01: She's now finally getting that opportunity against Sky Nicholson,
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: who is one hell of a champion and has proved to be even more dominant
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: since moving down.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: To 122 pounds.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: I'm really happy for Mio that she's finally getting a shot, but man, it's a tall task.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: It's a tall task in Sky Nicholson.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: And the other one I would talk about is Micaiah Kreps,
- 50:07SPEAKER_01: who I saw at a small club show in New York a few years ago.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: She beat a very tricky fighter named India Smith Rodriguez,
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: who has been a spoiler on multiple other occasions for fights of hers
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: that I've watched and been to.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: I've watched her beat and upset.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to see her at this next level on a televised fight after seeing her in
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: a club show and thinking, I'll definitely see her again.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, so that's your MVP card.
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: Pretty good card.
- 50:52SPEAKER_00: Now we're going to go over to the UK.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: We know Dakota's a big UK guy.
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: We're going to talk about Joshua Bawatsi versus Willie Hutchinson.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: What's your thoughts?
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: I like that fight.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: Honestly,
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: I never saw the first one,
- 51:04SPEAKER_01: and it's kind of based on the other fights of theirs that I've seen.
- 51:07SPEAKER_01: It's kind of hard for me to imagine Bawatsi beating Hutchinson.
- 51:10SPEAKER_01: And since that fight, I just think Hutchinson looks better.
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: It looks more like a world-class guy, so I kind of lean towards him.
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: But again, I didn't see the first one, so maybe there's something I'm missing.
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think it's an interesting fight on different levels.
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: They're both amazing amateurs from the British and UK scene,
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: and it's kind of like two high-level guys that people expected to probably be at
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: a higher point in their career.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: Not that they're not at a high point,
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: but I think people expected these guys to really be Carl Frampton-type fighters
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: that were really generational.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: I get what you're saying and Mayakee Crazy,
- 51:47SPEAKER_00: I believe,
- 51:47SPEAKER_00: brought this up in my mailbag, like being like, dude, you're a momentum guy.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: You're a momentum guy.
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: Why are you going against this?
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: But for me, it just feels like Buwazi's kind of got the edge.
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: It feels like Willie Hutchinson beats certain level of guys who either aren't going
- 52:03SPEAKER_00: to go to the...
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: He's like a gatekeeper, but a high-level gatekeeper.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: If you don't have those intangible tools,
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: I think Buwazi has some hand speed and just some things...
- 52:13SPEAKER_00: Some intangibles you can't teach that are going to give Hutchinson some problems.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: And though I think momentum is on Hutchinson's side,
- 52:23SPEAKER_00: I think this is just a matchup that Bawati is going to do well in.
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: You're muted.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: Trying to remember who the last guy that Boatze fought was, Parker.
- 52:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I did not think he won that fight.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: I thought he looked very hesitant and unable to pull the trigger.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: And I think that Hutchinson's style is fluid enough that if it's that guy,
- 52:49SPEAKER_01: I still do kind of favor Hutchinson.
- 52:52SPEAKER_00: So I want to push back on that.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: This good segment is...
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: I think two things happened in that.
- 52:58SPEAKER_00: Boatze told me his favorite fighter is Joe Frazier, which is kind of bizarre, right?
- 53:01SPEAKER_00: That's an opposites attract because you don't think of Boatze as Joe Frazier
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: in terms of stylistically.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: But I feel like he got in the mode of being his favorite fighter against Zach Parker
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: and channeling his inner Joe Frazier,
- 53:13SPEAKER_00: which is probably not the best version of himself, honestly.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: Second off, what I think happened in that fight was who expected Zach Parker to box?
- 53:22SPEAKER_00: He was this guy that was known as a big puncher.
- 53:25SPEAKER_00: People were like, he was prematurely like a highly rated guy.
- 53:29SPEAKER_01: But I also thought he won the fight.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: I also thought he won the fight.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, like, I mean, I don't think he won, but like, I could see why you could see that, right?
- 53:39SPEAKER_00: But I think...
- 53:41SPEAKER_00: There was also a shock that you're going in with a guy who had been in his prime
- 53:46SPEAKER_00: and prospect era.
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: He was viewed as UK's Edgar Berlanga, big knockout guy.
- 53:51SPEAKER_00: This guy's the truth.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: Runs into John Ryder.
- 53:54SPEAKER_00: Ryder gets big fights off of the win over him.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: I think that there was a little bit of...
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: Buwazi might have mentally been like,
- 54:04SPEAKER_00: let me go to this guy and kind of meet him with his energy so he's not trying
- 54:08SPEAKER_00: to walk me down.
- 54:09SPEAKER_00: And I think there was possibly,
- 54:13SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 54:13SPEAKER_00: like when you think you expect something to happen and then the guy's doing
- 54:17SPEAKER_00: the opposite, you might think you're doing better than you're doing.
- 54:21SPEAKER_00: And I think Zach Parker, I don't think anyone expected him to go backwards.
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: And I think Buwazi in his mind might have even been like, dude, I hit hard.
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: But I don't even think it was like this great performance from Parker.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: It was just like he just got more done.
- 54:34SPEAKER_01: And I kind of felt like.
- 54:38SPEAKER_01: I don't know,
- 54:38SPEAKER_01: I thought maybe I viewed it as more dire,
- 54:41SPEAKER_01: but I thought that with Boatze in that one, I thought he looked kind of done.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: I thought maybe like they've waited too long or something.
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, look, this is a fight where if Boatze loses it, where do you go from here?
- 54:57SPEAKER_00: Like, there's not, like, he's waited a very long time.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: He was a 2016 Olympian.
- 55:02SPEAKER_00: It's 2026.
- 55:02SPEAKER_00: It's almost 2027.
- 55:06SPEAKER_00: It's tough.
- 55:07SPEAKER_00: Hutchins, I believe, was like a top amateur and then took a real early career loss.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: And he's kind of built himself back to be like, what would you say?
- 55:16SPEAKER_00: He's like one of the modern Smith brothers in UK boxing.
- 55:19SPEAKER_00: He like he's right up.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: He might even be a little slipperier, but I think it's a similar kind of level.
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: Roll.
- 55:27SPEAKER_01: He's a solid top 10.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: And to be fair, that's the level that Bawatsi lost at.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: He lost to Callum Smith pretty clear,
- 55:34SPEAKER_01: and Callum,
- 55:35SPEAKER_01: as great as he is,
- 55:36SPEAKER_01: maybe one of the best Brit fighters of his era,
- 55:39SPEAKER_01: has proven that at that next level, he's not quite there.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: I guess I'm just always going to be a little...
- 55:48SPEAKER_00: Biased for Boatze because when I watched the 2016 Rio games, Boatze's fans flooded the chat.
- 55:54SPEAKER_00: And I always remembered that.
- 55:55SPEAKER_00: They're like, Boatze, Boatze.
- 55:58SPEAKER_00: And he had like so much star appeal.
- 56:00SPEAKER_00: And then I've gone to the gym.
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: He trains kind of by me in the Bay Area.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: And I've seen him a few times.
- 56:07SPEAKER_00: And I think he's a...
- 56:13SPEAKER_00: I think he just naturally has more...
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: But it's like he's getting less for what he has than Hutchinson has.
- 56:20SPEAKER_00: So it's like the interest to this fight is not like I think this fight isn't going
- 56:25SPEAKER_00: to be competitive, if that makes sense.
- 56:27SPEAKER_00: I think one guy is going to pull away.
- 56:30SPEAKER_00: And I think if it's Boatze, I think both Boatze's career is on the line.
- 56:35SPEAKER_00: Because Boatsy wants to go to that next level.
- 56:38SPEAKER_00: And he needs to win a fight like this to prove I'm truly a world-class fighter.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: Whereas Hutchinson,
- 56:43SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 56:43SPEAKER_00: can exist in a domestic British level because he's going to beat those guys
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: and rise up.
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: This is more so for Hutchinson.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: If he wins this, I think he takes Boatsy's spot.
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: I think Boatsy's kind of seen as a top 10 guy or a fringe top 10 guy because
- 56:59SPEAKER_00: of his Olympic history.
- 57:00SPEAKER_00: And I think for Hutchinson,
- 57:02SPEAKER_00: this is his way to introduce himself as,
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know, like a John Ryder of this era or a Callum Smith of this era.
- 57:09SPEAKER_00: And that's what I think is at stake.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 57:13SPEAKER_01: I like the matchup.
- 57:17SPEAKER_00: Under card's pretty forgettable,
- 57:18SPEAKER_00: but guess what we're going to talk about next is my favorite guy, Big Nasty.
- 57:23SPEAKER_00: You know I'm a big, big nasty guy.
- 57:26SPEAKER_00: Big Nasty fighting in Australia sometime this week.
- 57:29SPEAKER_00: He's taking on 45-year-old Paul Gallen.
- 57:32SPEAKER_00: I love Big Nasty because of everything about him.
- 57:34SPEAKER_00: Kind of reminds me of like a pro wrestler.
- 57:37SPEAKER_00: He's a rugby player who's just massive.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: He wears big apples on his trunks.
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: I don't fully know what that means, but I like that.
- 57:45SPEAKER_00: I like that he has big apples.
- 57:47SPEAKER_00: And I am endeared by him because I saw him on the Tim Zoo Amazon Prime card earlier this year.
- 57:55SPEAKER_00: And...
- 57:58SPEAKER_00: They did a vignette,
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: and I always tell you about this vignette,
- 58:01SPEAKER_00: and they go,
- 58:04SPEAKER_00: he goes,
- 58:04SPEAKER_00: I'm going to drown this guy and take him into deep waters,
- 58:07SPEAKER_00: or I'm going to take him into deep waters and drown him,
- 58:09SPEAKER_00: and I'm like, oh man, heavyweight, Australia, deep water is like the second fight.
- 58:16SPEAKER_00: And it was a four rounder.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: So I just love the idea of that.
- 58:19SPEAKER_00: And I love that.
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: Like after he knocks the guy out,
- 58:21SPEAKER_00: there's another rugby player in the audience
- 58:23SPEAKER_00: that he was like calling out right away.
- 58:26SPEAKER_00: Like it's just for me, big, nasty.
- 58:30SPEAKER_00: The talent's probably not going to fully be there,
- 58:33SPEAKER_00: but there's just something fun about a Butterbean-esque character that kind
- 58:38SPEAKER_00: of gets what he is.
- 58:40SPEAKER_00: And I'm not mad at a regional market like Australia having
- 58:44SPEAKER_00: a guy that's doing this shtick where he's fighting the 45-year-old guy that used
- 58:49SPEAKER_00: to be him.
- 58:50SPEAKER_00: It's a five-round fight.
- 58:52SPEAKER_00: Love that because we don't have to struggle through the late rounds.
- 58:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 58:57SPEAKER_00: I find fighters like this that know their mortality fund.
- 59:02SPEAKER_01: And who makes a five round fight outside of the fucking contender series anymore?
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think we should
- 59:09SPEAKER_00: normalize it.
- 59:10SPEAKER_00: That's a hot take with me.
- 59:12SPEAKER_00: I think that if you don't consistently put on good fights,
- 59:16SPEAKER_00: we should just normalize like you're doing a seven rounder, bro.
- 59:20SPEAKER_00: Less draws, I guess, too.
- 59:24SPEAKER_00: I think Austin Trout had a fight where he had an 11-round fight.
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: They experimented with that, I'm pretty sure.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just strange.
- 59:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a strange one.
- 59:34SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure.
- 59:34SPEAKER_00: Maybe I misspoke.
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: Also, your guys over at Zufa, we know Dakota's big Zufa guy, big Zufa head.
- 59:42SPEAKER_00: They're doing the UK show.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: They got actually a pretty good card.
- 59:45SPEAKER_00: You may or may not check it out, but it's got Chris Billum-Smith versus Shev Clark.
- 59:49SPEAKER_00: That's a cruiserweight bout.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: We've got also on the card Denzel Bentley versus Shane Mosley.
- 59:57SPEAKER_00: And there's one other fight where Umar Desmond Beckoff is on the card taking on someone.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: Let me see who it is.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_00: Those are good matchups.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: Zach Parker, your guy Zach Parker is taking on Umar Desmond Bekoff.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: It's probably the most complete card start to finish is the Zufa card.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so that's happening on Saturday.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: What do you think about Denzel and Shane?
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_01: Because I haven't seen Shane in a couple of years.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: I don't think I've seen him maybe since the Rosado fight.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_01: I don't think I saw the Danny Jacobs fight either.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: What do you think are his chances in that one?
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, I did film study for my newsletter.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: They asked me to do film study on it.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_00: You know, they're kind of, it's an interesting fight to break down, right?
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_00: Because they're kind of mirror images of each other.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: And the one thing I notice is Shane takes more risks.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_00: Arguably has fought the better fighters and gets hit a little bit cleaner by
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_00: the better fighters like Jesus Ramos Jr.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_00: So is that an indictment of where Shane's at or is that going to be an advantage
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_00: when he's in with Denzel Bentley?
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: I can't fully say that because it looks like he gets hit a tiny bit cleaner,
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_00: takes a little bit more chances,
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_00: but they kind of stay in the mid range and like to punch with you.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_00: That's kind of like their secret stuff.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, it feels like these are the fights Shane wins, to be honest with you.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: It feels like Denzel Bentley is kind of like very similar to Craig Richards,
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: a really, really good fighter where the breaks just never kind of came together.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: And it kind of feels like if you're asking me, what would I expect?
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_00: I would expect that Shane has the better wins.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_00: Shane has won on the bigger stages, has won in the bigger situations.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: And I think he loves boxing more than people think.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_00: And he has a he's a true competitor.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_00: As long as he can take the punches because he's going to get hit, I tend to favor Shane in this.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: I think it'll be a good one.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_01: The other bug for him was like inactivity.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_01: He just doesn't fight very often.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_01: And so at his age,
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: I just wonder if somebody like Bentley will be sharp enough to take advantage of
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_01: that.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_01: But Bentley has exactly been lighting the world up with activity and just dropped
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: the world title belt.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_01: I don't really know what to make of him either.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_00: It's a great fight.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, all the fights, Zach Parker against Desmond Bekoff.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_00: I would say Desmond Bekoff probably beat Zach Parker if I were to say.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_00: Billum Smith versus Shev Clark, hot take.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_00: I probably think Shev Clark wins that, even though Billum Smith is a massive guy.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_00: I could be biased there, but I feel like Billum Smith gets hit a lot.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_00: And at one point, he's just going to be a really big guy who's been hit a lot.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_00: It's definitely
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: a good one.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: Do you think that they're trying to do that fight as winter gets Jai?
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_00: I have no clue.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_00: I don't really understand what's going on with Zufa,
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: but I appreciate the matches because they make cards that are enjoyable start
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_00: to finish.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_00: They're basically as close to the top-ranked cards that you and me used to start up
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_00: and watch for a whole afternoon,
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_00: and we could just watch a whole evening of boxing,
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_00: and we'd go, man, this is a great card.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_00: Basically,
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_00: that's like the Zufa Boxing cards are like that thing for me right now
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_00: because you can watch like a start to finish card that's good.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: Feels like a lot of the other cards just are kind of A-side,
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: B-side fights and you don't see guys That's why the Oshaki-Foster fight was so fun
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_00: for us because you look at that card and every fight had depth.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_00: Every fight, the matches had purpose.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_00: Even fights where guys won, they had to grow and learn.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: It was just so much fun to watch as a viewer.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_00: I'll enjoy it, but I honestly think with Zufa, sometimes they just make fights.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_00: I don't even know if there is.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_00: I think it's just like, let's match some guys up, make some fights.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_01: I think we have to maybe a little bit for the moment,
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_01: let go of the idea that there's some big grand plan.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_00: I think that's the good thing about Zufa Boxing is like you have to unlearn some of
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_00: the things we hate about boxing, like the waiting down the line.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_00: I think sometimes they just they have some guys and they just make some fights.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_00: The next, the last card we're going to talk about is, it's the Dimitri Salida card.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_00: And it's going to be on DAZN with your regular DAZN subscription.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_00: And it's going to be Abraham Perez versus Yankee L Rivera.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: I was incredibly high, maybe to a fault, on Yankee L. Rivera.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_00: I thought that he was a superstar-type talent.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_00: He lost earlier this year to La Bumba Gonzalez.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_00: And now he's in a title shot.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_00: And he's taken on Abraham Perez, the man that beat La Bumba earlier this year.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_00: It's taken place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the Perez family is from.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_00: Sneaky, really good fight.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_00: Also kind of speaks to boxing where a really good fight is just super under the radar.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what Rivera has in this one.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_01: The fight prior to the fight with La Bamba too was just not a good performance.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_01: He was not able to adapt or adjust.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: Whoever that very awkward opponent he had was.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen Perez,
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_01: but I too really, maybe not as high, but I was pretty high on Yankeo Rivera as well.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_01: And I just kind of felt like it went flat and then he just lost a fight
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_01: that you wouldn't necessarily expect him to lose.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_01: That felt like not a rite of passage fight, but somewhere in that journey.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_01: And And he just didn't have it.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_01: So it'll be interesting to see what he's got left.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah,
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_00: I thought that my takeaway with Rivera is it seems like he gets emotional at times
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_00: in his fights and then he gets himself in trouble.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_00: Seems like he needs to practice a little patience.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_00: We all could do that, but it feels like with him that's more so something.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_00: Let me read through some of the undercard.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_00: We got Atif Olberton versus Dion Nicholson.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_00: That's a pretty good fight.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_00: We got Price Taylor versus...
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_00: Rognava, I can never say his first name.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: Tshatna Rogava, a heavyweight step-up fight, I believe.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_00: Rogava's only loss was at the WBC Grand Prix Tournament.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_00: And Cedarius Simmons has taken on Cesar Navarro.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_00: Pretty darn good card, to be honest.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_00: Like, if you just want some good fights, it's a good card.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_00: Always like a good
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_01: Salido card.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like...
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_00: It's good.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_00: So, okay.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_00: So that's our show this week.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_00: Tons of boxing next week.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_00: I'm going to be on the road.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_00: So who knows when you're going to get a podcast from me, but you'll get a podcast at some point.
