- 0:47Hello, folks.
- 0:47We are glad to have Scott Perry join us once again to grab another aspect of team history and NFL history.
- 0:54Scott, welcome back to the Pig Pen.
- 0:56Hey, thanks for having Professor Perry back.
- 0:58Being part of the show on a regular basis is really great and it's helping my mission of educate fans as to whether or not their organization is above 500 or below 500.
- 1:11Since the greatest moment in sports history when the AFL and NFL became this greatest league and created the super bowl, which had already been taking place for four years.
- 1:21But it's the greatest spectacle in sports.
- 1:24Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:25That was a definitely a big moment in football history.
- 1:28So it looks like you have a particular team you want to talk about today and give us some history.
- 1:32So why don't you tell us a little bit about the Raiders.
- 1:35Yeah.
- 1:35You'll notice that we previously have talked about the Titans, the Broncos, the Bills, and I wanted to go to the jets, but I.
- 1:42And I have pictures of me in jets pajamas growing up and that's the most harmless organization to be a fan of.
- 1:46You can be a Jet fan in the midst of the team that you really like and they're like, that's not that big a deal.
- 1:51It's like having your little sister around or something.
- 1:54I don't know.
- 1:55Anyway, we're going to talk about the opposite now.
- 1:59When I give, I give talks to senior communities as my main thing that I do.
- 2:03But I'm looking for other younger audiences.
- 2:07But I love the seniors because when I say who is the biggest nemesis of ours, I'm coming to you from, from Littleton, Colorado, actually Denver proper.
- 2:16And our biggest rival will always, always, always be the Raiders.
- 2:21Wherever they're playing, whether it's the Oakland, Louisiana, Las Vegas or the Martian Raiders, it's always going to be our biggest rival.
- 2:29So, so it's.
- 2:33Let's talk about their background.
- 2:35Okay, so the AFL started in 60 and they gave Minneapolis a club.
- 2:40But the NFL being the NFL, they got a hold of the owner and said, hey, if you can wait a year, we're going to give you the team known as the One Eyed One.
- 2:51Horn flying.
- 2:52What?
- 2:53Aaron?
- 2:55The Purple People Eaters.
- 2:56There you go.
- 2:57Yeah, I'm old enough to remember that song.
- 2:59All right, good.
- 3:00So the Vikings come in as a huge crane that lifts the AFL franchise out of Minneapolis and plants it in Oakland.
- 3:08And they have a naming contest in Oakland.
- 3:11Now, I, to me, Raider Nation is.
- 3:13It's not something I ever want to compliment, but in 1960, they had a brush with greatness or smartness, I guess.
- 3:21I should say the team comes out and says hey, at the end of the contest, this is it.
- 3:26Here is your new 1960American Football League Oakland seniors.
- 3:33So I cannot imagine.
- 3:35I talked to fans here and said can you imagine going to the Broncos senor game?
- 3:39I do not want to root against the senor.
- 3:40I want to root against a pirate.
- 3:42So I mean, what a correction.
- 3:45The team said, okay, we're getting really a big pushback.
- 3:48We're going to take that second team Raider name and, and make it the, the eighth organization in the afl.
- 3:57So early on they're bad.
- 4:00They're really bad actually.
- 4:02Luckily.
- 4:03But Al Davis shows up and by 67 they are the AFL champions.
- 4:09So they play in Super Bowl 2.
- 4:11They get pretty well hammered like the Chiefs did the year prior by the same team, the five time 1960s world champion green Green Bay packers.
- 4:22And their, their coach John Rouch goes to Buffalo.
- 4:27Is that right?
- 4:28No, if that's the, it wasn't maddening in that Super Bowl 2 game.
- 4:33Yeah, that I'm not, I'm not sure of.
- 4:36I'm not sure who the coach was for them.
- 4:37Professor Perry, I, I like to give homework and that's, that's part of it.
- 4:41So as I mentioned, homework, your homework is to go to, to YouTube and listen for the Mighty Wind is a Pirate.
- 4:49It's a song on NFL Films about the Raiders and it's just so compelling.
- 4:55It's hard to be a Raider hater when you're listening to that because it's just brings up the best in football on a fall day.
- 5:01So I digress.
- 5:05So the Raiders start off 70 in the AF and the NFL and they're, they're pretty dominant.
- 5:11They are very few teams in my book.
- 5:14My book ranks every team from the very best winning percentage in the regular season down to the worst.
- 5:20And for two years 78 and 70.
- 5:2277, 78.
- 5:24The Raiders are the winningest team 1976 as a.
- 5:31I love the Patriot organization back then.
- 5:33They're old unis.
- 5:34They, they have a big turnaround.
- 5:36They go from 3 and 11 in 75 to 11 and 3 and 76.
- 5:40But they're the wild card.
- 5:43They go to Oakland to play the Raiders and it's a big deal because in the regular season the Patriots beat the Oakland Raiders and had they not beaten them the Raiders would have finished 170 that season and, and
- 5:58watered down the Dolphins 72 season.
- 6:01So I'm very happy the Patriots made that victory happen.
- 6:04But they lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Raiders that year.
- 6:08And the Raiders went on to be the 1976 World Champions against the Vikings.
- 6:13And it's upsetting to me because I'm a, I'm a good patriotic American.
- 6:17And to have the patriots be the 1976 NFL champions would have been so much better than these guys.
- 6:24So that's one thing I've stuck in my crawl.
- 6:27But we'll progress.
- 6:28So then the 76 world champions come to Denver on January 1, 1978.
- 6:35They lose to my Denver Broncos.
- 6:36And that's pretty awesome.
- 6:38That's a good plug for again to the AFC championship game the year after winning the Super Bowl.
- 6:45But I, I, I have to stop and talk greater history.
- 6:49And I moved here in 1981 and we opened up the season with a 97 victory over the Oakland Raiders.
- 6:59And something happens to the world champions later on in the season.
- 7:03They play the Detroit Lions, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos.
- 7:11The week Prior to those three games, they beat the Seahawks.
- 7:15The week after those three games they scored 18 points and beat the Buccaneers.
- 7:19So the two expansion teams from 76 are the bookends to this wonderful fact that the Raiders scored zero points in those three games against Detroit, KC and Denver.
- 7:30And I love, I love that when you have a least favorite team and you can talk about something as horrible as what would happen back in the 20s, in the early days of the NFL happening to the world
- 7:40champions in the early 80s, I just, I hang my hat on that fact and I don't want to skip that.
- 7:48But let's keep going by, by 82 years later, they are the world champions by beating the Redskins.
- 7:55They are in there in Los Angeles, baby.
- 7:59Well, yeah, so that 81, they were the defending champions having beat Philadelphia.
- 8:05So now it's 83 and they beat Washington.
- 8:07So they're three time champions.
- 8:09The 1983 is a long time ago and that is their last championship.
- 8:14So.
- 8:14But what's happened in the year 2002?
- 8:19Well, the Brady era is a result after the 2001 season of.
- 8:24I don't know, I don't, I could make an opinion on the, what's the play called, Darren?
- 8:29That happened.
- 8:30The tuck rule game.
- 8:32The Tuck rule game.
- 8:33So that's, that's pretty frustrating.
- 8:36But you know our, my buddy John Gruden, he had the Raiders winning two division titles.
- 8:42That's a big deal because they hadn't been as dominant as they had been.
- 8:46But now that game is over, the season's over for 2001 and somehow the Tampa Bay Buccaneers talk them into trading.
- 8:56Basically they had to get a draft pick.
- 8:58Is that my right?
- 8:59Yep, I believe you're correct.
- 9:01Yeah.
- 9:01So Gruden is now a Raider.
- 9:04He's well versed with the Raiders and lo and behold, the Raiders win the AFC championship over the Titans and they're playing the Buccaneers in the super bowl and they get clobbered by John Gruden.
- 9:1648, 21 I believe was the score of that game.
- 9:20So but now as, as you're watching this as a Bronco fan, I mean me growing up, everything was the Raiders and then the Broncos.
- 9:28We had nothing to say to Raider fans.
- 9:31But the result of this 2002 switching of head coaches, that's a long time ago.
- 9:38That's 24 two dozen seasons ago.
- 9:42The Raiders have had two winning seasons.
- 9:44Now in my book we talked, if you watched my first segment for the Bills, they're able to win 13 games.
- 9:52They will become a winning organization in my book.
- 9:55But the Raiders lost their last game of the 25 season and in my book they are one game under.500.
- 10:00So if you can imagine how Davis commitment to excellence.
- 10:04They were the number one, they were the number two team in 2002.
- 10:08Only the Dolphins had a better winning percentage from kickoff 70 to 2002.
- 10:13If they don't win, they don't go 2, 0, get back over 500 and they kind of falter.
- 10:19They're gonna, they're gonna head over to the losing side in my book.
- 10:22My book divides up every organization by the winning side, losing side.
- 10:26And it's pretty common for the bottom 16, 15 and 16 to be under.500.
- 10:32It's very rare for 17 and 18 on top of the losing side to be over.500.
- 10:36But we're gonna switch the Bills over to the winning and the Raiders to the top of the losing if that happens.
- 10:44So anyway, change it to leaderboard, huh?
- 10:47Yeah, I mean you can believe it.
- 10:49I mean it's just I look at the history of organizations and I put the, the Cardinals, the Buccaneers, the Bengals as just multi decade double digigit losers.
- 11:01And to think that the Raiders are now added to that list is just now.
- 11:06And it's, it's funny.
- 11:07When I became a football fan watching Inside the NFL, something struck me like I am going to be a fan of all the really weak teams that have not done anything up to that point.
- 11:16I'm really going to dislike the great team.
- 11:20So I will always.
- 11:21I'm not going to change from being anti Pittsburgh, anti Dallas because of that and then not that big of a.
- 11:29I mean the other Two teams, the Vikings and Dolphins, who were dominant, they have done nothing pretty much.
- 11:34So I've taken my foot off their throat and I'm okay with their success.
- 11:38Now that said, the Raiders are the other dominant team.
- 11:43I like Kirk Cousins and I had a sports column in high school.
- 11:47I got to spend the day with Gary Kubiak and he's got my Broncos a championship and now his son is their, their head coach.
- 11:53So if I can wave a magic wand, I guess I, I pick a year and I mean maybe they have to do this year to get Cousins a championship, get Kubiak a championship, get the Raiders a championship, but
- 12:04then put them back into their slumber esque coma for another two and a half decades.
- 12:11So that's just, I'm a fantasy football guy.
- 12:14That's my kind of fantasy.
- 12:15I don't root against players by picking them on my own fantasy football team.
- 12:19So that's where the Raiders stand right now.
- 12:22They've had two winning seasons since 2002 and they've picked two quarterbacks.
- 12:29Now with the first pick in the draft we know what happened to the first one.
- 12:32So let's, let's hope it doesn't have the same fate because he sounds like a good guy.
- 12:37So you have any question about the Raiders, Darren?
- 12:40No, but do have, you know, some comments about your book?
- 12:44You know you're basing a lot of this off your book NFL in the Night since 1970.
- 12:49And you know we have a image of a right now and there's links to get connected to Scott's book through our Amazon associates links in the podcast version and on the YouTube version in the show notes so you
- 13:04can get all caught up with your favorite team if you're not talking about the Raiders tonight or the Broncos and you'll find out how they're doing so far in Scott's book.
- 13:13So Scott, maybe you could tell us just a little bit about as we wrap up here on the book.
- 13:18Yeah, the book is a result of and we'll go to the the Sable family with their awesome filmography created this monster of a football fan and I just a God given gift of committing everything to memory that I've
- 13:34learned of pro football and picking the Broncos over the Bills.
- 13:39Living in Rochester, then moving to Denver, experiencing my five years from junior high to graduating high school with Denver having zero playoff wins, sitting down to feel better about my organization and seeing that there was 75% of the
- 13:53teams had a lesser winning Percentage since kickoff 1970 when the merger happened and that just evolved into the book.
- 14:02I had a vision of making it all just helmets, and it took me Till I was 44 back in 2009 to make the first version.
- 14:11And every year I update it.
- 14:13And it's my goal is to get as many fans to have one on the coffee table and and learn their team history and give that book to a younger fan and then get the new version when I might
- 14:23have their team as the new addition with the championship page added to it.
- 14:29All right, well, Scott, we really appreciate you coming on and joining us once again, and we love to talk to you again real soon.
- 14:35All right, thanks so much, Darren.
- 14:38We're taking a peek over at the chains in the down marker.
