Latest / Unlocking The Paradigm Portal / Light In The Dark: The Story You Never Said Out Loud
Transcript
- 0:00Hey, it's Sarah. I'm really glad that you came
- 0:03back. So as always, think of my voice
- 0:06as a light in the dark tonight. And I'm not here to fix
- 0:09anything. I'm not here to explain.
- 0:10I'm just here to sit with you for a few minutes and whatever
- 0:13it is you're carrying. And I want to talk tonight about
- 0:17something that most people never say out loud.
- 0:19Not because it isn't real, because saying it out loud feels
- 0:22like it might confirm it. It's the story that lives in the
- 0:26basement, the one that's been there longer than most of your
- 0:29relationships, longer than most of your achievements, longer
- 0:33than the version of yourself you show the world.
- 0:37It's the one that says so quietly and consistently,
- 0:40running in the background of almost everything.
- 0:43There is something wrong with me.
- 0:46And if that landed, if something in you just went very still,
- 0:49you're exactly who I'm here with tonight.
- 0:53You have built an extraordinary life on top of that story.
- 0:57I want you to know that I see that the competence, the showing
- 1:02up, the way you hold things together for yourself, for the
- 1:05people around you, with the consistency that most people
- 1:09can't maintain. And you have done remarkable
- 1:12things, carrying a weight that nobody else could see.
- 1:16And none of it has quieted the voice.
- 1:19That's the part nobody warns you about.
- 1:21You think if I just accomplish enough, build enough, prove
- 1:24enough, the voice will have to admit it was wrong.
- 1:28But it doesn't work that way. The voice doesn't respond to
- 1:31evidence. It just moves the goal post.
- 1:34And it finds the next thing that isn't finished yet, or the next
- 1:37place you fell short, or the next angle from which you can be
- 1:41found insufficient. And you are so tired of running
- 1:45that race. I know you are.
- 1:47I can feel it. The exhaustion you're carrying
- 1:51isn't from doing too much, it's from trying to outrun a story
- 1:54that started before you were old enough to question whether it
- 1:57was true. So can I tell you what I think
- 2:01it actually feels like to live with this?
- 2:04I think it feels like performing in a play where you wrote the
- 2:07script and you know every line and you've been doing it for
- 2:10years, and you are still every single night waiting for the
- 2:14moment someone in the audience stands up and says, I see what
- 2:18you're doing. I know what's underneath.
- 2:21And I think it feels like being unable to just receive something
- 2:24good, a compliment, an acknowledgement, a moment where
- 2:29someone chooses you clearly and instead of landing in it,
- 2:34something in you immediately starts looking for why it
- 2:36doesn't quite count. Why it's temporary, why it's
- 2:40based on the version of you they can see and not the one you're
- 2:43certain would change things if they could.
- 2:47And I think it feels like a really specific kind of
- 2:52loneliness, and not the loneliness of being unseen, the
- 2:57loneliness of actually being seen and still not being able to
- 3:01feel it. Because the part of you that
- 3:04could receive it is behind the story, and the story gets there
- 3:08first every damn time. It's such an incredibly lonely
- 3:13way to move through a life, to be surrounded by people who are
- 3:16trying to reach you and not able to let them land.
- 3:20Not because you don't want them to, because the story keeps
- 3:23intercepting the signal. So here's what I want you to
- 3:27hear tonight. That story, the one in the
- 3:30basement, the one that says there is something fundamentally
- 3:33wrong with you, was not something you arrived at on your
- 3:37own. It was handed to you in a very
- 3:41early, wordless way that the most important things get handed
- 3:45to children not through what was said, but through what was
- 3:48withheld. Through the moments when you
- 3:51brought your full self into the room and something in the
- 3:54environment responded in a way that taught you that part, that
- 3:58one right there. Keep that part out of sight.
- 4:02You were not defective. You were a child trying to make
- 4:06sense in a world that wasn't always able to make room for all
- 4:09of you, and the only explanation available to a child is the
- 4:14problem must be me. It wasn't you.
- 4:17It was never you. The people who couldn't hold all
- 4:21of you were limited in their capacity.
- 4:23That is real and it matters, and it is not the same thing as a
- 4:27verdict on your worth. Their limits were not your
- 4:31defect. They were just limits.
- 4:34Human, ordinary, unexamined limits that got mistaken for a
- 4:38measurement of you. And you've been living inside
- 4:42that mistaken measurement for a very long time.
- 4:46You are not someone with a defect you've been successfully
- 4:49hiding. You are someone who was handed a
- 4:51story about themselves before they were old enough to Fact
- 4:54Check it. And I'm not going to tell you
- 4:57tonight that the story is gone. And I'm not going to tell you
- 5:00that naming it dissolves it. It doesn't work that fast.
- 5:04The story is old and it moves quickly, and it will probably
- 5:07show up again tomorrow in some form that you might recognize.
- 5:11But I want to offer you something small tonight.
- 5:15The fact that the story has been there a long time does not make
- 5:18it true. Age is not evidence.
- 5:21Persistence is not proof. Something can be old and
- 5:25familiar and feel completely real and still be a story, still
- 5:30be something that was handed to you rather than something you
- 5:33discovered now. You don't have to dismantle it
- 5:37tonight, and you don't have to have a different relationship
- 5:40with it by morning. You just have to be willing to
- 5:43sit here and let it be a story. Not the truth, not a verdict,
- 5:47not a permanent feature of what and who you are.
- 5:51Just a story. One that was written for you by
- 5:54people who were doing the best they could and still got
- 5:57something very important wrong. You are allowed to write a
- 6:02different one, so I'm going to leave the Lantern right here
- 6:05next to you and you don't have to figure anything out tonight.
- 6:10Just sit and know that you are not alone and try to get some
- 6:14rest.
