- 0:00Aloha. Tuesday morning. Hurricane Nolo is passing 300 miles west and weakening, but Kauaʻi and Oʻahu are in for heavy rain and dangerously high surf through Wednesday. Mele here with what's happening in Hawaiʻi today.
- 1:49Heavy showers are moving across Kauaʻi and Oʻahu today through Wednesday, especially on the south and southeast slopes where flooding is possible. Strong, gusty southeast winds are hitting Kauaʻi. If you're driving in this, visibility drops fast — take it slow. The Big Island and Maui stay mostly clear. Friday the system moves away and conditions improve.
- 2:07Kauaʻi's south shore is running 6.4 feet with a dangerous shore break — experienced swimmers and surfers only. A High Surf Advisory is in effect through 6 PM today on the south sides of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. Stay out of the ocean there. Oʻahu's seeing 4.8 to 5.2 feet — moderate surf with shore break and rip currents. Maui and the Big Island are much calmer.
- 2:24Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is open, but Mauna Loa Road is closed past the second cattle guard for tree removal, and Kīpukapuaulu Trail is closed due to hazardous trees. The Sulphur Banks Bridge is closed, though the boardwalk is still open. Volcanic ash is around — protect yourself accordingly if you have respiratory concerns.
- 2:41Kauaʻi's tourism is opening back up after Lowell, but it's spotty. Our new piece breaks down which visitor businesses have reopened and where you might still hit closures — some operators are ready, others are still finding their footing. The recovery is real, but before you book, checking access first is smart. It'll save you a disappointment once you arrive.
- 2:59Wednesday stays wet and windy on Kauaʻi. Thursday the rain tapers off, and by Friday trade winds return and conditions settle across the islands.
- 3:06Our Kauaʻi Essential guide has what works when the weather stays rough. Talk to you tomorrow.
