- 0:00SPEAKER_00: All right, welcome to another episode of the Catholic Couple.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Uh, we are blessed to have tonight Chantal Howard, who's got a new book out called Show Me Your Scars, Fulton Steen's Theology of Suffering for a Wounded World.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And it's uh it's about all about our favorite Fulton J.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Sheen.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: We're we're super pumped.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: But Chantal is the executive director of the Fulton Sheen movement and has spent years helping bring Sheen's life and his teachings to a whole new generation.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, she's also uh a mother to seven homeschool, I believe I saw it.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Amazing.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: That right there is like I think the biggest accomplishment for I don't know.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: This this whole conference coming up and the beatification coming up in St.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Louis.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I'm sure you've had to move heaven and earth to make this happen on September 23rd, the Full Gene Movement Conference, which is uh we're super excited to be coming to.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And then trying to balance that all at the same time.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And another one.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: This is Catholicism.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: My oldest daughter is supposed to be watching him.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Well, this is this is Catholicism in and real motion in life.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: We are a pro-life uh movement, so this is beautiful.
- 1:12unknown: There we are.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Who wants you, Mom?
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Lots of snuggles earlier, lest anybody thinks I'm being super neglectful.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: No, yeah.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Good hands.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: When you've got seven kids, you spread the mothering out.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: They all exactly right.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: That's that's that's for sure.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: We we we've been talking a lot about that.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Is like the I mean, we only have two.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Uh I grew up I have four, but it's just that's part of the the growing up with the families that you have every so many different hands to help.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a lot more, but as they get older, they help out and it makes everything go for sure.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: It's beautiful.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Well, well, thank you for taking time on your busy schedule.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: I know you're trying to do last minute things for this uh for this movie.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what's your stress levels with uh within a few weeks?
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Today feels really good.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: It's a it's such a roller coaster, you know, and I think that's with life in general.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: You just go one day you wake up and you feel like all the cards are against you and the you know, the enemies on your tail, and then other days you just feel the wind in your spirit and the spirit in your wind in your sails from the Holy Spirit, and uh, you know, you feel really good.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: And I would say today is one of those days, thankfully.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: We've had um just yeah, a remarkable surge of interest.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: I you know, for a long time it was like, come on, let's get the wheels turning.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Where's the Sheen momentum and people are last minute?
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, they are like it's really starting to happen.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I think Sheen is just bursting onto the scenes, and unlike some naysayers, I don't think this is gonna be just a blip in the Catholic world.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: I think that Sheen is actually going to be a game changer for us, for our country, for our families.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: And uh, I think we're just on the beginning of this huge escalation, not only towards canonization, but beyond.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: I that's what I hope.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: It's crazy.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: His influence is so relevant.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: Like when you listen to his talks that were given in the 1960s, right?
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Um like sometimes I'll read a book or I'll I'll listen to something and I'll look up when it was written because it's so pertinent to right now.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, what 1967?
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: You know, it's so it's like, whoa, how did you know?
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: Did we really have the same problems?
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: I guess we did.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: So we keep thinking every generation thinks they're so unique with all these things, and it's like, well, but human nature doesn't change, yeah, yeah.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: That's that's what he always likes to say.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: And he's timeless and he's relevant, and he makes things so understandable and relatable as as well.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: So really excited to um to to attend and to like to be able to be a part of it when it comes up.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: So yeah, well, thank you guys for you know carrying the torch all these years when there wasn't a groundswell, when there wasn't this big interest.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's starting to pick up on social media, you know, his clips.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I've been sharing Fulton Gen since I started doing Instagram.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: I was like, I would I would release like one Fulton Gene quote a day, one Father Mike a day.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Like well, I would say Father Mike is like a Fulton Chene of art of this time for sure.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And it it's it was good to see like finally, like you said, the wind get going behind this because I uh it's had such an impactful, you know, he's been so important in my faith journey.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Like once I read Life of Christ, I was like, holy, I'm like, whoa, and like everything changed, and I just started eating up all of his stuff, and it's just I just know what he's done for my life, and like not like today.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: I listened to like three hours of his talks, like I was just doing cardio and stuff in therapy, and it's like like I'm just always because it's timeless, and you just forget, like he's he's he does repeat himself in some of the stories because I was listening to some of the suffering stuff to prepare for the first interview, but it's like and then I it was funny today.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: So then what hit me today was I'm like he not only does he tell jokes, but he's like very good at it, and he has so many, like he doesn't just do one, he does like three in a row, and then he finds another one.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: I'm like, there's there's no book that has all of Fulton Steen's jokes together.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: I'm like, with I bet I can I can use you know notebook LM, take the videos, I can have AI like pull all the jokes out of like the videos and stuff and put it together because they're they're good today.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Like copyright that nobody's taking that idea.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Whatever, if they want to do it.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: In the second book that's coming out, I actually have a section dedicated to his jokes.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: It's not all of them, but I have Oh, no way!
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's good.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: That's good.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: So let's talk about that.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: The the book that you did write and the specifically the name, show me your scars.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Like, why did you choose that name for the book?
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Well, um, I yeah, just a little backdrop.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: I grew up with Sheen too.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: I was one of those that being a I was homeschooled myself, so my mom would just pull shelf books off the shelf and crack them open and read to us, and I'll never forget that day that she opened uh Lift Up Your Heart, and he's she started reading to us about the ego or the ego, as Sheen would say.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: The ego and the I, and how the ego has to die and the I has to replace it, which is our true self.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: But ultimately that we're moving towards the divine nature taking over.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: It's no longer I who live, but Christ who lives within me.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: And I remember the images and the the words and the day.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's amazing.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: I was ten years old, maybe nine years old.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: I remember that day, and I remember going, why isn't he a saint?
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: All mom's books were saints.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Saint so-and-so, Saint Faustina, Saint, you know, I mean, you name it.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: And why wasn't he a saint?
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: And I remembered just journeying with him from that point forward.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: He was one of my I would I would call him my spiritual director.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Like just read Sheen.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Sheen was just always in my life on the day of our wedding.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: I'm a little bit of a diehard romantic, I admit.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: I opened up Sheen's three to get married, and I read out loud a beautiful poem from Sheen and from that was in there to the whole group of guests.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: And so Sheen's just been embedded in my life.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, I happened to marry the biggest Sheen geek there is.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what that's amazing.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then he took studies got his doctorate in Sheen, and and in the background of our life, there's just always been this like everybody needs to know Sheen.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: And not just know him as a you know celebrity priest who happened to be pretty amazing because he got an Emmy and and had an amazing TV show and reached 30 million people a week.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Like those are all aspects that are very fun to know, but that's actually not what made him a saint.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: That's not what we're celebrating with his beatification.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: We underneath his teaching, even you know, I feel like the teaching is even a certain level of depth, but underneath that is even greater depth, and that is his life, him his encounter, his interior, his mystical gaze, his life with Christ.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: And when we dig deep enough into Sheen, we realize that the foundation of everything he did was grounded in a deep prayer life, of course, the daily Eucharistic holy hour, and a lot of suffering.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Suffering is powerful.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: And when uh a few years ago, as we were ramping up this movement to get Sheen's beatification back on track, and and Peter kind of started pulling me in to being, you know, the behind-the-scenes gal to help with all the organization that it takes to run a movement, I remember listening to his Good Friday homily, the last one he gave before he died.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: And many of you may know it, and if you haven't, I encourage you to go listen.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: But he in there he says basically oh he's pouring his heart out, and he starts to move into this movement of what does it really mean to be authentically holy?
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: It means to live with our scars exposed.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Show me your scars, he says.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Are your are your hands calloused from serving?
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Are your feet worn from search from going to attend to the poor?
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Are is your is your there room left in your heart for those that need you most?
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: And he does it better than I do.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: So go listen.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Because I don't I don't claim to be able to duplicate Sheen.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: But I remember listening to that, and simultaneously, one other talk that he gave at the Crystal Palace where he said speaking about Christ and Thomas and Pope and the resurrection, and and he says, you know, a lot of people today think that Jesus is a superstar.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: He's not a superstar, he's a super scar.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: He you know, he talked about his scars, you know, the resurrection.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: It was through touching Christ's scars that the greatest proclamation of faith in all of scripture was uttered.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: My Lord and my God.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: And it was because he had his scars.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: And I remember just thinking, well, Lord, I've got a bunch of scars, so what can you do with these?
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: I'll share them if you want me to.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And I think that one of his other famous quotes, I don't know exactly what it is, but he he he was talking about the opposite of the Antichrist.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: When the Antichrist appears, he won't have scars.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: He won't have scars, he won't have scars.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: And that's that's the that's the thing, is because he didn't want to erase them.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: God could have did whatever he wanted when he when he ascended and went to the to the right hand of the Father, he could have done he wanted to do.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: He's God, right?
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: But he chose to keep those there to show us that that that's how to get closest to him.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: It's in that suffering.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: St.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Faustina says that if the angels could be jealous of us, two things would be receiving holy holy Eucharist, but also that we can suffer because in the suffering we're closest to him and his passion.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: So it's like those things.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: So what is that you think is trying to say about our wounds?
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: You know, a lot of people today we're we're we're we're in what they call this, you know, this age of uh despair, you know, deaths of despair and anxiety, depression, and suicide and and drugs and all these things.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: And so many people are walking around with these scars.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: What does not only your book, but what does Sheen and Jesus can can help us about the those scars and our sufferings?
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, uh I speak from a personal level.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, as much as it's been a glorious ride of marriage and seven kids and a ministry and being married to a theologian, you know, underneath it we all have our scars.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Us two, need to.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: And I think that's what made me feel uh disqualified.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: I use the word credentialed, right?
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Like the credential to be able to share.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: It's not that I'm brilliant like Sheen or that I have any any other anything else to really offer except for my own woundedness.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: And that's what he gave me permission.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Through reading Sheen and encountering him in his own spiritual fatherhood, in my own spiritual life, like, oh, all right, I can do this.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: I can share because I'm wounded.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: And that's true, I think, for anyone who is experiencing acute physical pain, emotional pain, grief, resentment, even the wounds of our own making can be used by God to touch others.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: And instead of running from them or you know, plastering them over with some sort of social media profile that looks perfect, and I mean, granted, we all like to put our best foot forward, but realistically, I think what it what what this teaches us, what Shane teaches us, and what our Lord is inviting us to understand is that it's not a problem that you have issues with.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: It's not a problem that you're wounded.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: That actually is what allows you to be the greatest evangelizing force.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: You know, Peter, Peter chose to use his scars for the good for good.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Judas chose to run away and try to, you know, eradicate his scars ultimately.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: You know, looking at our culture and what it values and what and cancel culture if you make a mistake, you know, right?
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: Um, and how like you you nailed it when you talked about that social media profile or you know, we have to erase anything that could make us look like even the slightest blemish, you know, um, talking about the Antichrist coming with no scars to show, like, look at me, I'm perfect, you know, um, with like this facade, this vapor, this fakeness, you know.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: And I think that that is why someone like Fulton Sheen is so um, you know, attractive, especially to young people now, is because it's genuine, it's real, it's authentic, and they're being sold such a lie in our culture about that fakeness and that you have that perfection, um, where it's you know, that come as you are, but we we but not to stay that way and that Jesus in Jesus that's healing, but in but to be vulnerable, to be real, to be authentic, to be genuine is where healing truly begins, right?
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say about when you were talking, that's all I kept thinking about was is that that vulnerability, especially for men, it's very hard to be vulnerable, right?
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: Because we got to be protectors, we got to have this image, but that ultimately helps us lead to intimacy because we're sharing our our our wounds or like sharing our hearts, our innermost beings of those things.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: A lot of times they're not physical, they could be hurts from your childhood or all these different things.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: And especially like I said, for men, it's very hard.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: But without being open to them, if we can't let Christ into them, he can never heal them.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: It's like we need the You can't be healed if you don't think you're sick.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: So I think that I I when we talk about suffering as we do a lot as Catholics, right?
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: We talk about suffering a lot.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: We we shouldn't shy from it because we believe there's a redemptive nature in it.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: But like you're saying, social media does so good to try to paper over it and to try to try to pretend that it's not there, but we know it's there.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: And it's like the the people that people need to put out all their dirty logo social media, but what that's the what's what's valued is within a marriage, within people you can trust.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: You don't gotta put out social media, but like, oh, it's on again Tuesday.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Like, we don't need to, you know.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: But but I think that suffering has got that bad word.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, help us kind of understand like how we could, as especially as Catholics, to we hear this all the time, to offer it up, right?
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: How how do you how does Gene deal with that?
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, can you explain maybe a specific thing he suffered that that you maybe spoke about in the book or that that like kind of ties that together?
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: I think one of the things that people don't really realize, as much as we're attracted to him because he's so vivacious, is there was a lot of suffering in his life.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: First of all, he suffered at the level of doing battle for his own salvation, his own ego.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: He loved the limelight.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding?
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: He would have been a huge social media guru.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: He would have had all of it happening.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Like there was there's no doubt about it.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: He really he was he wasn't just social media famous.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: He was famous in the such an extent that the upper levels of government and Hollywood and I mean, he was the real deal when it came to famous.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: He couldn't walk down the street without people recognizing him.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: He was, you know, more than Jonathan Roomy.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Like, so when you think about the fact that he was naturally tempted and and told and there was an allure for that, he had to battle that, and he did he he spoke of that often as like I I liked my Cadillac, right?
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: But ultimately he had to find the death to self, and that was a painful process, it is for all of us, to let our ego die.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: So that's one level of suffering.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: But the other level of suffering was that he was really what we would call the you know, he was the OG cancel priest.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: He had the plug pulled on him, he loved his TV show, and due to conflicts, as he would say, from the inside within the tension of hierarchy, he was the plug was pulled on him, and he was exiled, and there was a lot of suffering.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: He was very quiet in the way that he endured that.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: He didn't want to bring scandal to the church.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: And so I think one of the things that I've wrestled with is how do we share his story without doing what he didn't want to do, right?
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: He didn't want to cast a shadow on the church.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Now, I do share that story pretty clearly in the book.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's been long time documented in his bio in his biography as well.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, not again to to name names, but to help people realize, like, oh, if this, if he went through something like this and I'm enduring, you know, betrayal from my family, or I had, you know, I mean, God forbid, there's I mean, there's just so much that happens in our lives that is so painful and feels unwarranted and unjust.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Sheen's been there and handled decades of what he you know, the silent years where where he was very very ostracized.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Um and so that was a really an acute suffering.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: So what do you do with it?
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: What do we do with suffering?
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: And what does it mean to offer it up?
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: Like Sheen says, he says, My life was crossed up with the crucifix.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: And one of my favorite quotes of he says is he says, the scars are the whole truth.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, this is intense stuff.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: So what he did is he got on his knees every single day before the Eucharist.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Now, the daily Eucharistic holy hour is one particular practice that has been an off and on uh what do I want to say, love-hate relationship in my life, because when I was younger, that was my response too.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, I'm running to the church, I'm gonna go pray.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: You know, and I had the latitude to do that.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: And Peter, my husband, has maintained a daily Eucharistic holy hour almost consistently for 25 years of our marriage.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: But that means that there's times when he has goes and takes his holy hour and I'm at home with the kids, and I'm battling with teenagers, and I'm doing you know what I mean, and he's praying on his mountaintop.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: So I'm offering my hour in a different kind of way than than necessarily.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: And and that's one of the things that I think we can do is part of it is just intentionality and saying, you know what?
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: This pain I choose to find meaning in, and I choose to make meaningful just simply by acknowledging it.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: It's an act of the will, it's a just it's just simply saying, What does it mean to offer it up?
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: It's just like, Lord, use this.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Like I give it to you.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know what else to do with it.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: I can't fix it, I can't solve it, I can't heal it, it's not going away, I didn't want it, but it's yours.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: And that willing, just consciously making that gesture, changing the way we think.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: And she was a master psychologist.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Um is when we change the way we think about something, we experience it differently.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: And that is the grace at work in us, not only on a natural level, but on a supernatural level.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: So I think the first and foremost important thing is yeah, if you can get a daily holy hour in, let's let's work towards that.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Let's choose 15 minutes, whether it's before the Eucharist physically or before the Eucharist spiritually, in the sense of I unite my sufferings with the tabernacle down the street because I'm stuck at home.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: I choose to give to give myself to you in this time.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: A lot of times I'll just set my watch and be like, the next hour, Lord, I don't even know what I'm gonna be doing, but it's yours.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: I like that.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Like, okay, here we go.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Holy hour, come hell or high water.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: And that's that is um part of part of what Sheen teaches us, is like just be intentional because it's what Christ asked us to do.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Could you not watch one hour with me?
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: I'm like, well, yeah, dang.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: I like that.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: That's less pressure for me.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: I'm always yeah, I'm always feeling guilty that I don't make like I'd like to try to do weekly, but it's it's sometimes I do it, sometimes I I'm I'm unable.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: But yeah, for Eucharistic holy hour, but that is that is a lot like okay, there's an offer an hour a day, even in what I'm doing, just to you like you said, United.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: I like that it's less pressure too.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Well and Peter Peter's harsh on the guys, he is like, hey dad, you can do this, right?
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Like he does, he does come down a little more intensely because that's where the spiritual leadership lies.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: But I do feel a kin, like a kindred spirit to Sheen, and that he's still like, hey, this counts.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Don't don't disagree.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: I usually do afering.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: When I do whole, I do when I'm back at work, I do I do daily mass.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, I at least do a half hour there, and then I get to receive, obviously.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: But then I, you know, I try to do the other dedicate my whole day.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to always do that.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, I I love the Brother Lawrence, where like we could practice the presence of God and washing the dishes or being with our kids or walking the dog or being on nature, anything that you're doing, as long as you invite the Lord into it, and you just keep the conversation as as Catholics, we think rote prayers are the only way to talk to God.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: It's like those are important, right?
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: We should write those down and to say those.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: But there's just like I don't talk to her like I did at my wedding with the vows, is that you know, sometimes we are talking, you know, just from my heart, and I'm just gonna say so having those conversations, you know, that when God is with you.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: The other thing I really like about Gene when he talks about this is he talks about kenosis, which is that emptying of your So like we we hear suffering, like we we think automatically those those crosses that are foisted upon us, whether it's from our own bad mistakes or the outside world, the health diagnosis, job loss, those kinds of things that we're dealing with.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: But then there's those other crosses where we're called to deny ourselves voluntarily and pick up our cross and follow him.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: We hear, and what that looks like, Gene always points to that Philippians 2 is that even though he was God, he emptied himself out like a slave.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: He was pouring himself out.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: So that that suffering can be literally offered up for somebody in that way that's not like, hey, this cancer, but hey, I'm gonna go without dinner today, or I'm gonna, I'm doing St.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: Michael's Lun right now, like today's Wednesday's is fasting, no meat, and cold showers.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: And I hate cold showers, but you know, so when I'm doing it, it's like it's a reminder of you know why I'm doing it in the first place.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: And I'm trying to offer that and connect it for somebody else and in reparation for for sins or for loved ones who are far away.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Is that uh what what other insights do you have about Fulton Sheen on those kinds of crosses where we are called to whether that's asceticism or sacrificing or or whatever that may be?
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Well, first of all, I think one of the images he points to so frequently is our lady, you know, the co-passion of our lady standing at the foot of the cross and her offering of her of his suffering and her suffering simultaneously.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: You know, there was a lot of self-denial.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: But it's always in light of the joy.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: And that's the part that I just think is so it is it's so counterintuitive.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: It's why when Sheen talks about suffering, it's like he talks about it as if it's a superpower, you know?
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Like this is not it's so yes, offering, self-denial, fasting.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: He wasn't great at fasting, so he didn't talk about it as much, and he admitted to that.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: He was like, Oh, fasting's hard.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, either am I.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: But he did, but he spoke, he spoke about self-denial in other ways, and one prayer that he would pray was he would say, Lord, send me suffering for the salvation of a particular soul.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: And the stories are epic.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Like there's one story of him, and I won't go into all the details, but he basically said, I I want a soul, I'll save a soul today.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Every soul has its price.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: I'll offer whatever you want to send for this soul.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: And he spoke about how a woman came and he worked, he helped her back into the church, and then he said, Then the suffering started, and he was trying to go from Lourdes back to Paris, and it took him five days, and he got kicked off the train, and his passes wouldn't work, and he just had all these things go wrong, and he was like, Every soul has its price.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: And so you're right, we can offer our suffering for the others, that's the redemptive nature of it.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Christ allows us to cooperate with him, and that's uh a concept that is so richly Catholic, and yet something that I feel needs to be spoken of more and shared more, even with our Protestant brothers and sisters, because it's like this is where we get to really reach souls.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Souls are what's at stake.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: And uh Sheen was just so on fire for saving souls.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: So in the I didn't know that he would make that deal every day, or when he's a day, but he's send me a soul, like I'm ready, I'm then he would make bargains.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: Like there was a story, like he's like, Well, I'll I'll build this chapel for$3,500.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: I'll take all the money I made all year, and I'll I'll build a chapel if you save this one person.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Like somebody's he tells a story about a man, he would visit him 40 days in a row in the hospital.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: He said, Get out of here every day.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: And he's like, He brought Jesus with, and he's like, Well, I'm just gonna sit here, and then on his dying breath, he said he was like, as he was dying, was like, Jesus have mercy, Jesus have mercy.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: And he's like, uh, he's like, Well, you know, it's like, well, maybe, you know, if I would have offered like a$7,500 chapel at the time, which is like a lot of money, you know, maybe he would have he would have caught me in and had a regular confession, but he kind of like he was bargaining always, but he was looking for out for other people always and taking like getting called in the middle of the night, going somewhere for a stranger that you don't even know.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: That that's the kind of life that he would you would hear these stories when he tells them.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Obviously, he's one of the greatest storytellers too.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: When he tells them, it's like it's hard not to like get weep behind every time he talks, he tells them.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: I've heard them multiple times, like you know, when you hear those stories, but it's just I guess that's for me what's really attractive is that we can tell people who are actually staying go feed the poor than those who actually do it.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: You know, we like to stay on the show more is caught than taught.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: He wasn't just you know a limousine priest, right?
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: He was he was also leading retreats every weekend, he was out there doing his holy hour, he wasn't telling you to go pray and do things that he wasn't doing himself.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: So there's always something to me that was always attractive about it because it was he was you know doing these things, he was writing the books, he was going all over traveling, trying to help people get closer to God.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: And he was um it just always impacts me every time he talks.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: It's like so I know how important this is in your guys' movement to get that message up because I know the impact it's had on me.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: And it's just I just want more people to hear hear him talk for a little bit.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Like look at the 30 minutes of talk, and like, man, the guy is super strong.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: Read a book uh that he's written, it's relevant, like I said earlier, I don't want to be read, but it's relevant to right now.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: That's not like something that isn't you know something that you can completely attach to when you read.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: So, how did you how did it come about about having the seven other voices on the book to help uh also pitch in uh some some notable names, Christopher West and um and Jason Jones and So the real deal is it's actually two books.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: I haven't released the second book, but I started out with this idea.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: I was like, I don't want to write a book, I don't have anything to say, but I know there's a lot of people that do.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: So I'm just gonna knock on doors.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: And I Peter always teases me because I'm just not afraid to ask.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: So I just hey, do you want to be in my book?
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: Just ask people, DM people, message people, track down some extraordinary leaders.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: Because what I wanted to highlight in this is that the people that are seeking to save our souls today, the evangelizers, the missionaries, the people who are on the front lines, they all have a story of suffering behind the scenes.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: And what if I could help them have an opportunity to share those stories in a similar way to sharing Sheen's suffering?
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, the book, it's kind of cool.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: First of all, there's real artwork, which is neat.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: You know, you were talking about that hollow fake, you know, as like that's the AI challenge we have.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: So there's this beautiful artwork that was done by and the story is really special.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: And then I have um in this particular uh book, it's Terry Barber, my husband, Immaculate Illa Gabiza, who suffered so much through the Rwandan genocide, Jason Jones of the Vulnerable People Project, who's out on the front lines serving, you know, in some of the most horrific places around the world.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: Father Donald Callaway, who's very popular, but also again, just he shares a very vulnerable story.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Conversion story, yeah.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and well, not just his conversion story, but actually a story more recent to him that was really akin to just like some really deep personal suffering.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Uh Tammy Peterson, Jordan Peterson's wife, who came through a pretty remarkable uh conversion story through her illness and a miraculous healing, but shean had a huge part to play in that as well.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: And then Christopher West, who is so known for the theology of the body, but again, he shared with me in in this particular uh interview when we were working together, he's like, This happened a week ago, nobody's heard this story before.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: So they really shared their hearts and they shared some really deep wounds, and and the reason is because again, the more that we recognize in each other that there's suffering and that you're in pain and I'm in pain, and that yet we can do something meaningful with this and make inroads for souls, then it really I think I my hope is just simply that people will realize that there isn't anything in your life that disqualifies you from being a light, you know, from being uh, you know, a voice for the truth.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: And she was an enigma to so many people because he was orthodox in terms of his faith.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: He was very solid and staunch, but at the same time, he had a heart for every soul he encountered.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: And he wasn't afraid of using whatever means it took to reach them.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: And in like we said before, more often than not, it meant some act of suffering, some some you know, and again, not I'm not not just talking about the fact that he had heart surgeries multiple times on feast days of Our Lady and had a you know had a lot of health challenges or whatever, but it was more like the annoyances, the little things, the the the people that rub you the wrong way, you know, the like you said, the intentional offerings, and and everything can be used for God's glory and the good of souls.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: And that's the hope is that we can get over ourselves in that sense and quit dwelling on the pain and start using it as fuel.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: As they they say, don't waste your suffering.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: You know, I I had a a similar story.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: I finished my book.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Well, we're we're we're editing it right now, but I started it seven years ago when I had back surgery the first time, and I started it, all these ideas, and God was doing it, and I was just in so much pain.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: I was taking so much pain medicine.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: I I couldn't really think straight.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: So I was like walking.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Once I started getting better, I was walking, and then I've been just fighting the resistance about it.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: But uh January, I hurt my back again.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: I had back surgery again.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: So now I've been off, I'm about to actually go back to work when this comes out, like the following day.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: But I'm like, this time I'm not gonna waste that suffering.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna use it.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: It's a it's a I weave it through the book of um, you know, trying to to show like how the saints lived is you know, both truth and love that like somebody like Fulton Sheen or the the Saints, they never disconnected it.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: We don't soften the the truth.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: It's not an either or.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: It's not an either-or, it's about the both and of our faith.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: It's like we're we're called, he was both a guardian.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: What the title is guardians and prophets.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Sheen was somebody who's guarding the dogmas and what's important, but he's also a prophet who's calling people back to repentance, to go back to what's important, makes it relevant, calling people out when it's possible.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: Like, but those roles are necessary, and the saints are the ones who are able to embody that within themselves, like Mother Teresa, uh all those different stories.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: That's the climax of the book.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: It's like saints show us what that looks like, but it's not it's not easy, right?
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: It it's a lot it's in a culture that forces you to choose.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: It's so tribal now, this political party that you know, uh this whatever may be.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: Everyone's trying to even take Jesus and put him into a box, right?
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: But he's he just Jesus just kicks those boxes open.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: It's like, no, you're not gonna contain him.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: And I think that's what the saints do.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: That's what somebody like Shane does.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: He he embodies, you know, somebody who's willing to go on the margins, like the story when he he he goes and visits lepers and how that really affected him, where he's out there with the lepers.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: Like he wasn't just saying go do that, he was willing to go there himself.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: And then when he recoiled, when he was going to drop, you know, something into the leopard's hand, he like recoiled and it like it torments him so much that he went back.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: And there's a there's a story about that.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: It's just like he was somebody who literally showed us what that looks like to live the both end of our faith of both truth and love.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: And sometimes the truth is tough, right?
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: But it doesn't mean we water it down, but then but truth divorced from love isn't truth at all.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: You know, as Peter says, It's so true.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: You know, I love the fra one of the phrases he uses.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: He says he calls it the apologetics of sanctity.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: Like, let that sink in.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: Like that's so good.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: It's like when we live our life close to the Lord, we are we are the gospel to others.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: You know, and that of course, like you said, I mean it's fun to talk about, but he always had great words, but you know, realistically, somebody's listening right now and they're just like this isn't easy, this hurts.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: I'm I am in pain, and it isn't glamorous, and I am angry or resentful or hurting, whatever.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: And you know, I think to that person it's it's really just a simple message of again, just give your pain meaning to just go into that place inside of your mind where you can simply say, I give it to you, Lord.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: And our lady will help you, the rosary can help you.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, he talks about the difference between false victimhood where you're sitting there on your you know, pity pot, being a party, right?
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm a pity party thrower.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: I'm a big pity party thrower.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: And we do that, we do that.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: And I think uh, you know, again, not all of us are gonna be as heroic or capable as Sheen or as any of the great saints, but like you said, they give us example, and if we can make even the slightest movement towards that willingness that just says, okay.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: Um, an example of this that comes to mind when um every time I've had babies, right?
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: There's lots of different reasons why, but just anyway, Peter will say, give me intentions, and he'll say, Okay, make sure you offer this contraction for so-and-so, this family member, this person that's close to you.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: And I'll never forget, I kid you not, at the peak of some of my hardest transition labor pains.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: He said, Okay, I want you to offer this one for Nancy Pelosi.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: And I just remember thinking, like, I don't know if I could go that far, right?
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: Like, if I could go that far.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Like, and and I remember just having this cognitive cognitive dissonant moment where I was just like, Can I really enter into love that far?
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Like, this is a lot of pain, and this is really powerful if I can.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: And having that moment of just being like, okay, Lord, like I will offer this.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, we can all do that in small ways.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: And uh, whether it's, you know, yeah, labor pains, which again, I've been blessed, I haven't had a lot of physical suffering or been sick in a lot of ways, but there are many who have.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: And I I just hope that whatever you're going through, just find some meaning in it and let the Lord take over.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: He's he'll show you what kind of miracles he can bring about through your pain.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: Well, well, thank you for sharing those those personal stories.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: That's uh, you know, and and if you're if you're watching and and you're listening, it's like, yeah, no one's saying it's easy, but with God, he promised it's possible to be able to do it.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: He never pro he never like He never said he'd take it away, but he'd say he'd be right there with you, right?
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: And anybody who tells Christianity that isn't about the cross, it's not only about the cross, but as St.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Paul says, I preach one thing, it's Christ crucified, right?
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: But it's as she would say, no cross, no crown.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: So the crown is there.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: You get you get the crown of thorns, and then you get the crown of glory, and that's that halo of light.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: So that's what we're looking forward to.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: And speaking of halo of light, let's transition into this beatification that you guys are a big part of helping uh get the movement back on track because of uh we have to get into all that and go back and listen to our our interview with uh her husband, Dr.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: Peter Howard.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: How many years ago was that though, for real?
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: Like what it's got to be five years, yeah, four, four or five years ago, yeah, six years.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: It's been it's been a while, and then we had him on purpose of Catholic as well.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Um but so the so Sheen found a way, right?
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: The Lord found a way, and and perfectly timed.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: You know, I think that's the thing.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: We get excited, we and we were really eager, the grassroots movement to help fan that flame, bring people back into awareness that Sheen's, you know, as we said, uh, you know, Sheen is clean and unpause the cause and you know, all these other little clips.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: But it it wasn't anything, it's just again, because when people encounter Sheen, they encounter Christ, and that's the truth.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: You know, any time it's like an eye an icon, you know, you see a beautiful icon, it doesn't it in itself need the glory, it passes it on.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: And I feel like that's the point with Sheen.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: And so his beatification is another one of those steps that is going to usher in a tidal wave of grace, and so yeah, we are we've just been really active in promoting and helping, and there's so much happening, there's so many events that are taking place.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: We have one in particular that we hope many of you will take advantage of.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: The day before the actual beatification in St.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: Louis, we have a full-day conference, and this conference is bringing together remarkable speakers.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: I know Bobby and Katie will be there, so come see them there.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: Um Arthur Brooks is gonna headline it.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: Because he is the happiness guy, and she is the happiness guy too, right?
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: And the way to happiness, even as Arthur would talk about, is it's through suffering.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: And uh, so we're gonna be touching on a lot of these themes.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: Dale Alquist will be there, Jason Jones will be there, sister Didi Byrne will be there, uh, two Byzantine priests, actually, and there'll be a Greek Archimendrite coming from Greece, which is kind of cool.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: So this breathing with both lungs of the church will be represented.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: It's a deep.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: As Fulton Sheen was, he was by ritual, right?
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: He would do Byzantine as well.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's meant to really help people, not just again, this we want all the stats and the fun, you know, kind of biographical notes to be known, but we really want people to encounter the depth of his theology and what he has to offer us today, our country, where we at, and how can we have deeper conversion as as a result of encountering him.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: So all day, September 23rd in uh St.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: Louis.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: It's both an in-person event as well as a virtual event.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: So if you can't be there, you can get a virtual pass, tune in from wherever.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: The Brazilian squad, believe it or not, there's a huge contingent of Sheen fans in Brazil that's gonna be tuning in and translating it.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: And just heard from an Italian priest, he's like, we want to have uh have access.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: So, you know, we want to make this a movement that spreads as far and wide as possible, and um but in a particular way, it is the American moment 250 years of our country.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: We've never been in more need than we are now.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: And Sheen has all the answers in terms of how we how we relate to the world, how we relate to others, and how we help turn the tide back towards Christ.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: So come and be a part of that.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: The next day, of course, is the beatification at the big dome.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: And we have beatification tickets in our block, meaning you could come get a beatification ticket and kind of go with us, little Fulton Sheen movement group.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Um, or you can go to the celebrate sheen.com and get a ticket that way too for the big mass at the big dome.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: Where can people go for the conference?
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, what's the website for that?
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: Fulton Sheen Conference.com.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: That's where you're gonna find out about the event on the 23rd.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: And our main website, which is linked to that, is FultonSheen Movement.com.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: Both will take you there, but the conference website, Fulton Sheen Conference.com, that's where you can get the virtual pass to.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, all the all the details are there.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and we'll be there as well, like you said.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: We're we're we're we we had to make uh move a lot of mountains to try to make this happen during the week.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: So but we've we've secured sitters and we got we got things.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: So many moving parts.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: And uh, but you guys are also going to Peoria beforehand, correct?
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: You guys are doing a little tour there as well.
- 41:01SPEAKER_00: You guys are taking like a an actual like pilgrimage group.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: That is another option, is if you want, as I call it, the full Tensheen pilgrimage.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: If you want the full experience, full steam ahead, tonsheen ahead, as Terry Barber would say, that's right.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: So um, starting on the 19th, then Peter and Bishop Coffee from the military archdiocese, as well as Father Thomas Lawyer, will be leading a group all throughout Peoria, going to the museum, uh being there for his priestly anniversary mass, going up to a beautiful church in Bradford where there'll be Byzantine Vespers with Father Thomas Loya and his whole community that are rallying to put that on.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: They'll be going to see Sheen's parents in the graveyard and seeing his where he grew up, praying in front of his tomb, all of those things, and then heading down to St.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: Louis and of course catching the conference on the 23rd, the beatification on the 24th, and then that night, after all of that, if that wasn't enough, Christophanic is hosting the group and they're having a dinner with Christophanic, and he's speaking there, and Peter's speaking as well.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: So it's very cool, really amazing.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: So Fulton Sheen Conference.com, the pilgrimage is there as well.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, it's her birthday is a few days before.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what do you want to do for your birthday?
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: I'm like, you know, this is a long time ago.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: We started like we were, you know, hearing about it.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: I'm like, wouldn't this be awesome for your birthday?
- 42:19SPEAKER_00: I'm like, yeah, we're such Catholic nerds, like, yeah, let's go there until we're gonna be able to get I'm I'm loving it.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: So how after a beatification, what's the typical timeline for true sainthood?
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: What's like the average?
- 42:33SPEAKER_02: Just curious.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: A lot of times it takes a while still because then the basically the clock is reset for the uh miracles that have to come in to validate for the next one.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Well, doesn't he have yeah, he has two or well, there's a little um shortcut perhaps, because when Pope Francis originally had said that he could be beatified back in 2019, the Vatican has agreed that that kind of was the moment that new miracles could be considered.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: And so my understanding is that there's already several in the queue that they're looking at.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: And so honestly, this could be, and I have no idea, but I hear rumblings from all these teen connections, that it could be the shortest turnaround from beatification to canonization because there's been already kind of a of efforts being made for that.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: So we pray for the official team who's responsible for the cause.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: It's a lot of work, you know.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Peoria had to do a lot of heavy lifting on that front, and of course, Rome at this point it really after the beatification, it basically all is handed off to Rome.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: And so we've got some fun connections over there, and we'll be keeping you abreast.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: Peter had a chance to go and meet with the Dicastri for the Cause of Saints in September of last year, bringing the petition, speaking with them.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: They love Sheen, they've never had any issues with Sheen.
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna, I think it's gonna move along.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Okay, so yeah.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: So maybe we'll all congregate in Rome after this.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: Well, that's why I was asking.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: I'm like, so how long do we have to save up?
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I don't know.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: Let's let I mean maybe maybe two years.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: Let's like let's hope this kind of quick just moves right along.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: That'd be amazing.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: So yeah, so if you're interested in in going to St.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: Louis, if you're you're not too far away, join us, uh message us.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: Uh we'd like to meet you as well.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Uh the conference will be there all day helping uh just just be sheen nerds and and talking to people and posting stuff and then following our our our our journey and and well and I haven't told them yet, so I'm dropping this on them right now.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: So this is unbeknownst to them.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: But I wanted to invite you guys to potentially intro one of our speakers.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: So I think you'll actually hear from them from the stage.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: So okay oh well uh I'm definitely not.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: I think I'm getting my hair done.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 44:50SPEAKER_00: Um I'll be super excited for sure.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you so much for taking the time and writing this book and all the all the legwork when nobody was watching.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it seemed like everything was stacked against you from random cardinals and just the just the whole politics of the whole thing and the spiritual attacks and all those things that I know have been, you know, from getting to know Peter through the years and and following you guys and this movement and all the all the the inertia of the whole thing that stopping and starting and going and you guys persevering and helping move this uh across the finish line.
- 45:21SPEAKER_00: And um appreciate all you guys' hard work and trying to help this movement, the Fulton Sheen Movement.com.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: And uh we've been rooting for you guys, Jaren, and I can't wait to meet you guys in person and and and meet you guys in St.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: Louis.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: Thank you both, and you guys have been just very faithful and super supportive.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: And I just this is a real honor.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much.
- 45:40SPEAKER_00: Uh appreciate it.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: Chantel Howard, thank you so much for taking the time.
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: God bless you, have a beautiful night.
