- October 29 The Way Up Is Down Topic: Humility. Scripture: Matthew 23:11–12 11 But he who is greatest among you will be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Context Jesus is warning against religious leaders who love status, titles, and public recognition. He overturns their model of greatness: in His kingdom, greatness is expressed through service rather than self-exaltation. Let It Shape Your Life Self-promotion is exhausting because the work is never finished. There is always another room where you have not been noticed enough, another person receiving credit, another title that would finally prove your importance. Jesus offers a different road. Greatness is not something you have to advertise if your life is genuinely serving people. Humility does not mean refusing leadership or pretending you have no gifts. Jesus Himself leads with authority. It means you do not need every gift to become a spotlight. You can take the lower seat, share credit, do unseen work, and let another person shine without feeling diminished. The way down is not self-contempt. It is freedom from the constant project of enlarging yourself. When service matters more than status, you discover that being useful can become more satisfying than being impressive. Think About It Where are you spending energy trying to appear important that could be redirected toward quietly serving someone instead?
