- 0:41With a blunt penknife the Doctor Who commentary podcast in which
- 0:47fabulous spectacular charismatic intelligent and God damn sexy.
- 0:53Dylan Reese is here to have a fluxing marvelous time with me
- 0:58about Jodie, Whittaker, and the flux.
- 1:01Hello Dylan. Hello.
- 1:02It's wonderful to be here. I was actually reminded of your
- 1:05robots of death commentary. The other day in which It was
- 1:09your guest on that. Sorry his nose, leave Alexander
- 1:12Steven, Alexander, lovely, lovely human.
- 1:15Who I met in real life. When I met you lovely, lovely
- 1:17guy but he ended one of the episodes as final question was,
- 1:22what do you like to get fucked by someone wearing them evoke
- 1:25Mass? Although that was, you know,
- 1:27that was you that asked that question.
- 1:28It was me, it was and then listeners are then get a
- 1:34photograph recently of the robot Master he's got so there's a
- 1:38little piqued their interest. Into what delivery spare time.
- 1:42I've got to say your missus, she's very accommodating.
- 1:45She is serious sexual. Antics, ask what your robot
- 1:52designation? Is it the 69?
- 1:58Yes, yes, it is. Furiously, trying to think of a
- 2:01sexually finger, then I was like 12, 34 56, 56, 69.
- 2:07Yes, or you smashed? As far as sexual innuendo Doctor
- 2:12Who jokes that's up there with my grand serpent.
- 2:16Unfortunately, we are going to be watching episode today where
- 2:19there is no sex with robots. No.
- 2:22But if you're into sexy Stone ladies, then you're in luck.
- 2:25You are in luck now looking, come on, we're gonna have this
- 2:29out before we even start the episode, okay?
- 2:31Because you sent me a message. Here's me thinking, you loved
- 2:34every part of this season. I think you had a little bit of
- 2:37an adverse reaction to this episode.
- 2:39Sewed. So I like everybody love this.
- 2:42When it went out and thought it was a great bit of Doctor Who
- 2:47but revisiting this time it's not that it's bad it is not a
- 2:50bad bit of doctor here at all. But in this like cycle of
- 2:56episodes in this series, I think it slows things down a little
- 2:59too much and I know the angels are involved in the plot but it
- 3:02just feels a bit too. Traditional Doctor Who in this
- 3:06run and I much preferred last week's episode.
- 3:09To this on this re-watch. I think it's great but I'd
- 3:13prefer it if we were it was just more flux flux flux.
- 3:16But maybe you can convince me that actually it's all tied up.
- 3:19Do you think this is why the majority of yeah prefer this?
- 3:25Because it is like because a bit like her voice in trial of a
- 3:29Time. Lord is just like our four-part
- 3:31Doctor Who story in a normal season of Standalone stories.
- 3:35Yeah, exactly. If this is Doctor Who base Under
- 3:38Siege, Scary monsters, Gothic horror All That Jazz and so I
- 3:44can see why people like it. But for me and where it is, I'm
- 3:48just like, get me back to the main action.
- 3:52Whereas I okay, so previous to this really confess this 21 Iva
- 3:58are I have been a bit muted about this episode.
- 4:03On this watch toxically, I really enjoyed it.
- 4:08And you know what, I enjoyed the most was I thought the execution
- 4:11of this episode was Peerless. Oh yeah, it looks amazing as
- 4:16well. Cast looks great like and in in
- 4:20terms of trying to drive a scare, it's one scene after
- 4:24another of really great scarce. I think we've had an awful lot
- 4:29of that in Kimmel's time. No, not still, I think.
- 4:33It's he's done a lot of big action things, but I don't think
- 4:37he does Doctor here as a horror story.
- 4:40Like he makes things scary, like he makes the Daleks scary again,
- 4:43I think, but he is not the jump-scare Doctor Who writer and
- 4:48in terms of like scary set pieces, I think this might be
- 4:52the chippers era ever so. Because spits like, I mean the
- 4:57bit where they go for that tunnel and all those bloody
- 5:00Angel has great. I mean I'm claustrophobic that
- 5:03truck. That literally brings me out in
- 5:04hives. Watch that bit but that's what I
- 5:07thought was really, really good. Was there were some really
- 5:12subtle but really good characterization of the non
- 5:16regulars in this as well. Yeah.
- 5:19And just we've sort of one or two lines.
- 5:21You got a good sense of who they all were, even that fucking
- 5:25creepy kid. That's in this What's an eye?
- 5:28Our name is with the pigtails. She belongs to the family of
- 5:32blood. That's our scary shit.
- 5:36The old couple where he says her at one point.
- 5:39You know, what's got into you? Because she's finally standing
- 5:41up to him for, like the first time in their entire marriage.
- 5:45Claire, get some really nice moments.
- 5:47Jericho is brilliantly, characterized only Doctor Who
- 5:50fans, loved Jericho didn't matter and so do I.
- 5:54Yeah. You see I mean we'll get into a
- 5:56bit more but, I mean, His characters, one of the best
- 5:59things about the twin Bielema by God when he takes off that
- 6:04tinfoil jacket, that's all black tank.
- 6:08Top attention to a is so he still stayed on.
- 6:13I think he would've been a great companion.
- 6:15Oh yeah, I mean, well, we sort of, I mean, different character
- 6:18obviously. But we do guess, you know, he
- 6:20sort of becomes a companion in this, doesn't it?
- 6:23I don't genuinely in the vanquishers.
- 6:25I think the moment that got me the most It was when he exits.
- 6:30Yeah, knocks. Yeah.
- 6:31I just, I just thought it was so engaging bullet.
- 6:34Okay, sad moment. Let's let's let that will come
- 6:37in sensually. Let's watch this thing and I
- 6:39know it's not a battle because I know you like a lot of this
- 6:42entire 100% like it. I just I was my response was a
- 6:46lot more muted this time but I'm still got lots of positive
- 6:49things to say about it because it's not a bad episode of Doctor
- 6:52Who by any means. I just have a problem with it
- 6:55being at this point in this season.
- 6:58Sometimes it's like a double-edge sword.
- 6:59Only, the danger came back is, is you can have this reaction
- 7:03or, you know, sniffs. Oh, you haven't enjoyed that.
- 7:05You can actually Come Away with a much more positive impression
- 7:09and I never know which way it's going to go.
- 7:10You know, you know, mind wall which one of time Jack every
- 7:13time I watch it, the oscillation swings.
- 7:16Yeah. And never quite tell with his
- 7:18really shit or absolutely amazing.
- 7:20But anyone what watch I'm doing. It's also such a good-looking
- 7:24episode of Doctor Who mind or so like I think Think it looks
- 7:28really unique. So I'm with you like I watch it
- 7:31one time. I'm like this is not what I want
- 7:33my daughter to look like we're the same time.
- 7:34I watch again that is just so fresh and interesting and not
- 7:37like anything I've seen before pink sky is so Gaius Planet.
- 7:41You've ever seen? Okay, let's do it.
- 7:46Am I better? It starts like a him.
- 7:49Yes, please, let's Press Play in 5 4. 3 2 1.
- 7:58So really in spike in this one I can imagine people would come
- 8:00back for the Angels. No I don't think that one of
- 8:04them is a huge Spike. I've got the Tardis, Wikipedia
- 8:09page, open in front of me actually.
- 8:11So I could probably pull up the ratings and my first question
- 8:15for you is this is one, what do you think of the angels and to
- 8:19do you think they're always used effectively or hazy idea?
- 8:23Got a little tired I think it got tired.
- 8:28Amy, and Rory's last story. That's the only time I'm well as
- 8:31a bit. Like, I don't like the whole,
- 8:33the Statue of Liberty being one, things like that.
- 8:36I was just a bit little bit over and the little cameos, they
- 8:39making them off a tiara, but I blink and time of angels, I
- 8:43think of, I think they're both Classics.
- 8:45I love both of those stories, a lot.
- 8:47And I think that they're great in this too.
- 8:49I think there is a danger. You have to find something new
- 8:52to do with them and they used very effectively in this.
- 8:55So it's just like, I really hate though.
- 8:58The Cameo heavy stuff of just throwing things in because I
- 9:02think it cheapens been too much and you know when they came
- 9:05along in the Time of the Doctor just that be in the snow or
- 9:09there was another one I'll help in as well whether just down V
- 9:12and I'm like okay you are literally I'll just throw away
- 9:15monsters. Now I liked the you know, Steven
- 9:18Moffat said that heaven sends originally, his concept was the
- 9:21doctor in a haunted house or an old house trapped with the
- 9:24angels which I think there's a cool idea as well, but I'm very
- 9:27glad. Not the version that we did
- 9:30ratings for this were 3.5 million Consolidated 4.55.
- 9:34So I don't think it that's a huge increase from the previous
- 9:37race, kisses success. Now, isn't it?
- 9:41Yes, I mean, another thing with Doctor Who fans love to talk
- 9:43about is ratings and I'm the same, but everybody's got their
- 9:47opinions and anything was pulling in four million views, a
- 9:51week is an absolute certified success in.
- 9:55Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I bet I think the the opening
- 9:59of this episode, you know, as the camera was slowly panty in
- 10:02across the Village Green, sort of missed descending on this
- 10:07Village. This is visual porn for Doctor
- 10:10Who fans isn't here. We're talking curse of fenric.
- 10:13We're talking the demons, you know, it's like classic
- 10:16iconography. Doctor Who fans love a small
- 10:18Country Village, don't know, I kind of do as well.
- 10:22I keep meaning to go back to the village that had evens was
- 10:26filmed in. I They do a convention there but
- 10:29I don't think I want to go for the convention.
- 10:30I think I just want to go and visit it.
- 10:32I went when I was a kid and there was a convention on it was
- 10:35the last one with Jon Pertwee did.
- 10:37And I remember it being a boiling hot day but I just want
- 10:39to go there and see in Republic Wonder around the village.
- 10:42Maybe we should just meet there. You know you me and Mark we'll
- 10:44just because if we go to the convention, we risk seeing John
- 10:48Levine, don't we that's true. No.
- 10:52Yeah let's do it. Let's have a day out.
- 10:54Okay people are being very indulgent as now we're planning.
- 10:57Our Field trips and you're all invited.
- 11:01You know all invited. Sorry guys.
- 11:02This is this is like the start of a great horror movie that you
- 11:05know the what's the thing called like the truth detector.
- 11:09Yeah. Crazy.
- 11:10The close-ups on that she's got the thing on her head looking
- 11:13like she's in the electric chair.
- 11:15Yeah. It's all very, you know.
- 11:17Yeah. It's as say it's classic sort of
- 11:20horror tropes and, you know, Doctor Who's done it before.
- 11:22It's similar is a similar setup to say that hide or something
- 11:25like that. It's just it's just lovely.
- 11:29And you is that doctor who has a movie idea?
- 11:32Isn't it of like taking ID have for the best filled in the world
- 11:35and do it in 45 minutes. And we were saying in Once Upon
- 11:39Time commentary that you know, the Hinchcliffe era is
- 11:42justifiably Lord is for being as good as it was at the time and
- 11:49this is completely leaning into that, isn't it?
- 11:51Yeah. This is almost like cherry
- 11:53picking the best horror movies of happened since then.
- 11:56Yeah. I mean it.
- 11:57You know that the the Weeping Angels can't help but sort of
- 12:00drawn the whole image of the Angel thing drawn Ring, The Ring
- 12:04and stuff like that. And I just think they used very
- 12:08well here and there's some there's some great moments have
- 12:10been doing new stuff and it's always cool when they think of
- 12:14new new things. Do like that moment in time of
- 12:16angels where you see the move for the first time and I was so
- 12:19not. And I remember what watching
- 12:21that I'm thinking bloody hell, what a what, a good story.
- 12:24Yeah, it was a, that was a betrayal of them are for, that
- 12:26was actually really. Really quite it was weird.
- 12:29So it was scary. This is a brilliant opening.
- 12:32Yeah, it almost makes that Tardis look, look good.
- 12:38I mean, I do like that time, but I just hate the big deal to you.
- 12:43You suddenly got sort of all the lights are snapping on and off.
- 12:45So, the angel can move in a succession of quick carts.
- 12:49Yeah. Let's it looks very cool and
- 12:53they are terrifying. Yeah, I love all these luminous.
- 12:56Like I know we had a bit of them in detecting scene, but I love
- 12:59these very simple, but a luminous cables because it just
- 13:02makes everything look so more alien and otherworldly.
- 13:06Now, they're all on the screen together and now, the thing I
- 13:09really liked about this story and it's something I would point
- 13:12out in Maxine orders, previous Doctor Who, which is D adulty,
- 13:16yes, just gets the regular bang on She does.
- 13:20This is a whole episode of Jodie, Whittaker panicking.
- 13:23I'm reacting to danger, and that's just her best.
- 13:27Absolutely, and it's just pure dr.
- 13:30Haven and iced it again. I still don't know how people
- 13:33could watch this and go. Oh, well, it was a good story
- 13:35for her ear because the writing was good and the writing is
- 13:37good. Lovely use a split screen as
- 13:39well as. Yeah, we're seeing doctor, but I
- 13:42just don't know how you can watch it.
- 13:44And say that Jodie Whittaker is not the doctor It's just, it's
- 13:49just Bonkers to battling. Can still throw throw that Chris
- 13:52is about their of, like she's a bad actress or aren't you know,
- 13:56I said you before, I think she comes fully formed, but I think
- 13:58a third series, she's just farted on all cylinders when you
- 14:03get the stuff like even the Daleks.
- 14:05Yeah, most of them their best in the third season.
- 14:09Not Matt Smith. Yeah, but yeah, it's as well.
- 14:13One of the things I loved about you as in this is there's a
- 14:16saying right where they're confronted with an Angel.
- 14:18Man, she's got tears in her eyes.
- 14:20She's so scared. She's crying.
- 14:24And I just, I realized one of the things I really didn't
- 14:26dislike about Jenna Coleman as Clara is that she was so offhand
- 14:30about every danger that they were in.
- 14:32Yeah. And when a companion is properly
- 14:35scared like that our richest it sells the danger to me.
- 14:38Yeah. And like kids watching it or
- 14:40sell the danger to them as well. It's suddenly a more relatable
- 14:46experience or I love this. She's like, I'm off you deal
- 14:50with them. Yeah, she she like she looks so
- 14:55great in that setting as well, in that traditional Doctor, Who
- 14:57setting because she's she's not wearing the big eccentric outfit
- 15:01or anything like that, but there's something about it, that
- 15:03makes a stick out. And you could imagine somebody
- 15:07in that area, just sort of going.
- 15:08What what, what's up with their clothes?
- 15:11But what's up with her clothes and particular just makes us
- 15:13Seems slightly more alien. I know people don't love her
- 15:15costume but I I'm a fan. Oh my gosh, I've just remembered
- 15:19now. So that our dear there, who's
- 15:22counting the gravestones, that's that scary little kid in it.
- 15:26Of course, sorry for anyone who may have seen this already.
- 15:29I've just drawn yet miss but it's a great twist at the end.
- 15:33I mean I doubt anybody's watching it for the first time
- 15:35with your our commentary. How do you like to watch Doctor
- 15:40Who for the first time though, with the hamster?
- 15:42Comedy. A lot of Niche companies jokes
- 15:46that only have been fucking lucky if they did right.
- 15:51I think you could be right there you know oh my God Joker.
- 15:56So nice. I like the fact he's really got
- 15:59some steel as well. So when the angels are attacking
- 16:02they're trying to use psychology against him in case he just goes
- 16:05out fuck off you ain't breaking me.
- 16:09He also could be directly out of a 70s Doctor Who story Mmm, it
- 16:15is just cut from that cloth of, you know, good Supporting Cast
- 16:19from a tombe, early, Tom Baker, story or late.
- 16:22John Pertwee story can I make an, your might think unfair
- 16:27comparison to a Steven, Moffat, era screwed, which I think does
- 16:31something quite similar to this but nowhere near as effectively.
- 16:36What do you think of hide? I like hide a lot.
- 16:40I dislike the resolution of hide of the whole love saves the day,
- 16:44as usual, when she was doing a lot of the time, but I do like
- 16:48it a bulk of this episode. And I bulk of high is yeah,
- 16:52features, a male and female guest character.
- 16:55Yeah. In a scary house under threat,
- 17:01okay? And I think in hide, it is
- 17:03Sabotage by the fact that the doctor and Clara Running around
- 17:07like a pair of school kits. Yeah, a lot there in the
- 17:09Scooby-Doo episode and not taking any of it seriously and
- 17:12it just ain't scary. There's no danger in it at all,
- 17:15even pop off in the Tardis whole way through whereas this is all
- 17:19play for real Jodi plays the whole thing for real.
- 17:22And I think the guest characters are as strong in hide, but just
- 17:26the tone of it and the suspense of it.
- 17:30Yeah, like the execution of the action as well.
- 17:32No, I get you. I interpreted get you.
- 17:36There's something about hide that I really like, but I also
- 17:41the something that doesn't sit quite well with me and, you
- 17:43know, I mean, we're not here to talk about hide but no, no.
- 17:47I'm just like I'm just like this can you can do this on it car
- 17:51work as well. Exactly.
- 17:53I would pointer to knock knock as another Doctor Who story
- 17:57where they're trying. It's a classic Doctor Who set up
- 17:59and conceit s not as scary as it is.
- 18:01It just doesn't work because it's not executed in the right
- 18:04way. I do think there's some
- 18:05atmosphere not more because well but yeah no.
- 18:08But these Wings on the now I think that's great and
- 18:14terrifying but they do look a bit like a fancy dress costume.
- 18:18Massive polystyrene wings. I thought they were CGI and then
- 18:21they sort of wobble novel. Yeah, they're actually on there.
- 18:24Yeah. Who is this fellow?
- 18:28The vicar disease? You know what when he talked
- 18:30about earlier is that I don't remember watching him but I
- 18:33imagine he's about to get, oh yeah, he's about to get Angels.
- 18:36Yeah, that's how you are very tenuous facts.
- 18:38You know, that I've learned talking to Toby, hey Doc, you
- 18:41know, the fellow who plays the old guy The Miss in this.
- 18:46Yeah you know what other always been in.
- 18:49There are go on, he played tall Park in Warriors of the deep.
- 18:53Of course, and he's good friends with their behavior because well
- 18:57because Toby headaches always talking about knowing Tom Park,
- 18:59which is just exactly the sort of thing that I'm going to say
- 19:05is this to cast members of this. We're in eight years Doctor, Who
- 19:08one was in war? Is that a deep one was in the
- 19:10Twin dilemma outside. They got quite lucky the second
- 19:13time around. I have, I have one friend who's
- 19:18been in Doctor Who I speak to regularly and it always it
- 19:22always amuses me Spill the Beans.
- 19:24This, it's one of Martha Jones between you and me and the
- 19:28distance is one of Martha Jones extended family.
- 19:32Well, her family so it's not not Leo, is it Reggie Yates?
- 19:38Oh, he's the most sexy man in Doctor.
- 19:41Who you tell him? That for me please.
- 19:45I was 750 for 16. Hey, what else?
- 19:50Having a clear out a few years ago?
- 19:53I found he narrated one of the, the audio books that they
- 19:57released at the time and I sent him a picture of and I've just
- 19:59found this and he was like, don't listen to it.
- 20:01It's the worst thing I ever did. But why was he relegated off to
- 20:05Brian? Was he getting off of work at
- 20:07the end of that? Some toast in top of the pops?
- 20:11Why did I did wonder if they had big plans for him?
- 20:13And he was just too busy. Yeah.
- 20:15So but yeah, I occasionally, bring up my loving doctor here
- 20:20and tease him about his character disappearing.
- 20:24It's a lovely chap. You know, you said about time of
- 20:27angels earlier, I I personally think this is the best use of
- 20:31the Angel since blink. I mean, blink, I'll ever be
- 20:34besties because it was just such an original idea.
- 20:36And oh, and like once the idea is there, it's like, you know,
- 20:39where do you go for go with us but yeah, I think you're right.
- 20:42I really liked on of my angel, so I was very much sold on that
- 20:46as a bit of a classic and you know in a production as well.
- 20:50It was. Yeah.
- 20:51Okay. As big as we've seen at that
- 20:53point. Yeah.
- 20:54And I just remember thinking, Matt Smith's first season, I
- 20:57just think him he is a performer.
- 21:00And Matt Smith's first block, which is time of angels and
- 21:03tasty. Did I swear know?
- 21:05It's weird. Isn't it?
- 21:07Like it obviously has other fantastic moments, but he's like
- 21:10that last season where he's playing it, as the old man and a
- 21:13Young Person's party. I'm just a bit.
- 21:15Like I just don't like it, but that first sight I do like it
- 21:20when he goes, take it all baby. Look At that exploded Planet.
- 21:27I know it looks amazing, doesn't it?
- 21:30I'll just keep pointing at the screen and going to look at that
- 21:33that but this at this point I've got exploded planet and I've got
- 21:36bow and I'm suddenly in my notes about this episode.
- 21:39All the sudden I'm like, yes we're back in, we're back in the
- 21:42territory that I want to be in and I'm more interested in this
- 21:46story. And this is this is like the
- 21:49value of odd scenes in Herre the vervoids.
- 21:53But some people, I think it's like, okay.
- 21:54We've got this great sort of Classic Gothic horror going on
- 21:58and every now, and again, we're reminded of the fluxes.
- 22:03We've got this guy from The Inbetweeners there yet.
- 22:06You know what? He was in a series of big finish
- 22:09stories, you know, he did one for Peter Davison ones, Colin
- 22:11Baker, 14, Sylvester McCoy, what were they?
- 22:15Ah, good grief, our other side, man.
- 22:18Was one of them, right? The one where they brought back,
- 22:20David Banks as a cyber leader. I think.
- 22:22So he was a unit Soldier and he sort of defects, he's A bit of a
- 22:26bad guy by the end. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:28No. I did listen to those.
- 22:29You're right. I just haven't clocked.
- 22:31It was him. I thought he was quite sort of
- 22:33naturalistic in this. I thought it was for me too.
- 22:36I think it's a good performance and I love food.
- 22:38Just this little sub story of the passenger being used as
- 22:42being sold as this Exodus route. You know, it's, he's piece into
- 22:47these planets, you know, where we don't really get a lot of
- 22:50context, but it's just like the wider Universe.
- 22:53You know, there are things going on out there.
- 22:55Yeah. It's so yeah.
- 22:57I mean yeah it's just pulls us back to this Universal
- 23:01destruction. Yeah.
- 23:02Do you remember that bunch in Halloween apocalypse?
- 23:04We just saw for two and a half seconds, ran away with their
- 23:07great Dome cities beyond all yeah.
- 23:10Erasing so-called big finish box set coming up on shore.
- 23:14Well, I do think like the main Arc and the individual story
- 23:18here. This does jar a little bit.
- 23:21It does a little bit. Yeah.
- 23:22But I guess it's too. You need, you need people to
- 23:27know that they're still very much because especially, is
- 23:30that, that last episode I was saying it feels a little bit,
- 23:33like the end of something, like it's a little break and that,
- 23:37you know, the doctor and vendor have gone, their separate ways.
- 23:39So it's just to let you know, there's still a big story here
- 23:43and you're not watching the monster-of-the-week version of
- 23:45Doctor Who in the way that it normally is.
- 23:47You know they're not suddenly on Nikola Tesla's night of Terror
- 23:51automobiles. I like I want you know it's all
- 23:53right. Are you?
- 23:55I called it Nicole and Trevor's night of pleasure, which I
- 23:57always thought at least scorpions chased him down the
- 24:02street. Yeah, that's all.
- 24:06Just going to say. Somebody on Twitter posted a
- 24:10cichlid from Night of Terror at the other week and said, mandate
- 24:13Gil is the best companion because she tries to stop giant
- 24:16scorpion things with bread but she literally stole the show
- 24:22Just use what you got to hand? All right, right now, I don't
- 24:26have a dildo to protect me but you know, What I do like is that
- 24:33this seems like a very linear story.
- 24:35This one, we're either very linear story.
- 24:37Yeah, it's just everyone being chased around by the angels and
- 24:41there's a little bit of time is why - at the end where you've
- 24:43got the two time zones. But it feels like it's entirely
- 24:46disconnected from the main plot until the end where the word
- 24:50division is used. And then you rear but it's all
- 24:53time together. Yeah, I do.
- 24:55Yeah, I do like the image of the house surrounded by Angels, like
- 24:59I think it's that thing of going bigger and better.
- 25:03Again, you just need more and more Angels.
- 25:05Every time you do them because you are their terrifying and you
- 25:08know okay and we see lots of them towards the and I just I
- 25:13love our last litter as well-- with a sort of blue Moonlight,
- 25:15everything's very Stark But all this stuff then trying to get in
- 25:20the door, chasing out the stairs down into the cellar.
- 25:24Like this is it sold ha, but it is based on deceit.
- 25:28This is Doctor Who. So yeah.
- 25:29Me and potatoes. Yeah.
- 25:31And you met in a I guess in a series where you don't get that
- 25:35which I said for me is perhaps why it doesn't work as well in
- 25:38where as well as placed at I guess.
- 25:42You know, it's to assure the fans as well but this is still
- 25:45good old-fashioned Doctor Who with a linear straightforward
- 25:48place. You say that's not a doctor, did
- 25:50you see those absurd item she just pulled out.
- 25:53Okay. She had a ping pong racket.
- 25:55That was about an inch long. Yeah I think your hair looks
- 26:01great on this as well. It's a bit longer here.
- 26:02Yeah I mean she always looks great, doesn't she?
- 26:05She's she's a handsome woman and like we keep saying, she just
- 26:11keeps reaction to every script. Yeah, really engaging way.
- 26:17Yeah, I think she like I don't think, I don't think she ever
- 26:21really gets a bad script for her doctor.
- 26:23I know lots of people would disagree, but I just think,
- 26:26fundamentally everybody knows how to write for her and I think
- 26:30she gets the material. Like I think her part is always
- 26:34well, written in her episodes. What happens in the last series
- 26:38for her is they sort of trial run and they're now their
- 26:42cherry-picking like okay, this is what she does.
- 26:44Extremely well, yes a lot of this, you know, there's
- 26:47something witty asides, you know, the the quick
- 26:51improvisation. I hope she comes back.
- 26:55Like she's one of those doctors that I was a little bit sad.
- 26:59I mean, I'm always sad when they leave but I was like I want more
- 27:02of her and I do think there is a world, Rusty Davis has said, in
- 27:08interviews and stuff about before, he took back doctor who
- 27:11are sort of going. Now, you would have a series
- 27:14running with the 10th doctor and the 11th.
- 27:15And it's like, I don't think you'll get that straight away,
- 27:18but I do see a world where her and possibly Matt Smith.
- 27:22Don't give him up. A four-episode miniseries at
- 27:24some point in between Seasons, but you need the time for your
- 27:28new doctor to embed themselves. So it wouldn't be.
- 27:31I don't think they do it for a couple of years, that's so I
- 27:34live in Hope. Firstly, look at the four
- 27:37episodes. We've watched so far.
- 27:39How do we apocalypse is like, dropping Jodie Whittaker stock.
- 27:42So into like a broad Church style season of Storytelling.
- 27:48Your sontarans is dropping are into a massive historical
- 27:52Hollywood Blockbuster Yeah, the last episode was drop it over
- 27:56into what is essentially like a very Mafia e.t. timey-wimey
- 27:59insane script. And now we're dropping her into
- 28:02a Hinchcliffe horror and she adapts to all of it.
- 28:04Yeah she's doing all she could do every type of Doctor Who very
- 28:08easily. I'm sorry.
- 28:10People come into this podcast, hoping to hear us slack off.
- 28:13Jodie Whittaker, we just think she's marvelous.
- 28:16I would, I would love to do and I know we've already nominated
- 28:20for thousand episodes to do. I'd love to do one with you and
- 28:25somebody who does not like the era over a Jody one.
- 28:28Well, you know that's got be luke Malloy then don't you?
- 28:30Yes, it's actually absolutely should and I know obviously
- 28:33we've got an episode coming up with him but I think it would be
- 28:36fun for him to come and give us his criticisms of particular
- 28:40episode, but it's got to be one that is, you know dude.
- 28:44Yeah, exactly. We can, we won't invite everyone
- 28:47to the Battle of ram score after.
- 28:49I'm not sure I can say too many nice things about that.
- 28:51One. I've got positive.
- 28:53Sorry about your tongue has some negatives, but that's for
- 28:56another day we will avoid Legends and sea Devils as well.
- 29:01Yeah. But there's a bit maybe like
- 29:03have you done spiteful? I have not done spy a but I
- 29:07wonder is that yeah because it was slacking off on earlier on
- 29:10Twitter when I put it with my second favorite season opener.
- 29:13Well there you go. So maybe we can tempt him in
- 29:15with spy 40 and it's all right. You know, I need every regular
- 29:19early and they all get great things in this and this is
- 29:22actually I think think Dan's opportunity because he's not
- 29:25around too long. This is his opportunity to of
- 29:28what he would be. Like in a series of sort of
- 29:31stand-alone Doctor Who Adventures where you just land
- 29:34somewhere you're investigating. Yeah.
- 29:36You sort of reacting to the horrors you know and sort of a
- 29:39bit slower Pace because a lot of this stuff is very fast.
- 29:43Yeah. As we said last time he sees you
- 29:45as His companion and what he has is being here is she's using
- 29:49modern policing, her skills as a policeman too.
- 29:53Or policewoman to solve this mystery because this is a,
- 29:58although this obviously alien influence, this is the sort of
- 30:01thing she would deal with in her day-to-day job.
- 30:04So this is very much comfortable territory to territory for her
- 30:07and away are there was a marvelous scene where she says
- 30:12about the kid isn't it is, is there anything in particular
- 30:15that she likes? And now guy goes, well, what the
- 30:17hell difference does that make? Because when we see her, we're
- 30:20going to have to talk to her. And to say something she
- 30:23Recognize will make her more comfort and his exactly how a
- 30:25police person would think. Yeah, there's arts and their
- 30:29relationship is great in terms of dining areas and it's that
- 30:33moment later where Dan goes to, you know, there's that by the
- 30:37Angels or whatever and they go, all how do we get back and it's
- 30:40quite heartbreaking in a way and he's just not cut out for that
- 30:42life. But like is, he's, you know,
- 30:44he's a passenger on this journey, he got caught up in it.
- 30:47And the only reason he's really sticking around as because he
- 30:51now is because of Diane Gilman. Mouse.
- 30:54He's basically is one foot in the door, in a one foot out the
- 30:58door, A lot of it is anything wrong with.
- 31:00I, you know, I mean, I hope he when he did finally, leave the
- 31:04doctor. He got a new house and sorted
- 31:06out his financial issues because I hope he's living a lovely
- 31:08happy. Life is, nobody goes back.
- 31:10And in bigger, Nate's, the house know.
- 31:14And I keep hearing that that thing that people keep saying
- 31:16about him that he started off, poor and painless and he ended
- 31:20up homeless what around I think I think the Mark was talking
- 31:26about it on, on the time last the other day I was just like,
- 31:29yeah, missing he's run his it's not great when you think of us
- 31:33as and today Siamese house. He's there in that sort of get
- 31:37together at the end, the power of the doctor looking happy, you
- 31:40know. Yeah.
- 31:41Oh I love this. This is so Sapphire and steel
- 31:45this. Yeah, it's amazing.
- 31:46As knowing from the Woodland to open space, there is an old film
- 31:50called the called dark city, which Is also similar.
- 31:54I can't remember too much about it but it has this image of
- 31:56Life, a city and then suddenly on the edge of space tenuous
- 32:03reference, but it's made me want to re-watch dark setting, but
- 32:06we're not going to do that for the podcast.
- 32:08I mean I can so I can absolutely see why.
- 32:11None. Chibnall era fans really love
- 32:14this. Yeah, g do we think Dan works
- 32:18for unit now? Do you think he was recruited by
- 32:21Kate Stewart lost suddenly Oops, I want I do realize the danger
- 32:24did he? He said, look, Leo I almost
- 32:27float off into space off that train, you know, little town
- 32:31with with Diane and had a very happy life.
- 32:34We never saw him. Do any Plastering?
- 32:40Know like, and I think it sort of, in terms of they didn't give
- 32:43him black bucket, loads of Personality either.
- 32:46The thing was sold on John Bishops, Charisma.
- 32:48Fortunately, he had a bucket load of it and so it worked.
- 32:52And we Only did it because of covid.
- 32:54He started like he had a big tall plant, he was offered, but
- 32:58she auditioned was offered it and then couldn't make it work.
- 33:00And then when covid happened, all of a sudden he was like,
- 33:03okay, I can I can do this now which is again, why he's written
- 33:07out early, a of the doctor because he's the world's gone
- 33:10back to normal and he's a one of Britain's biggest stand-up
- 33:13comedians again. And by all accounts, like he's
- 33:17got a small special feature a day in the life of an actor, so
- 33:22he takes his camera. Murrah in and films himself
- 33:26filming scenes from the vanquishers.
- 33:29It's on the flux Blu-ray and he's loving it.
- 33:33He's loving being with the actors, you know, and he's
- 33:35talking to her because of her. And I was there.
- 33:38And then then they walked in swarmin as you and it was no
- 33:41longer the actors. He's Amazing Creation.
- 33:45He's just amazing. He's loving it.
- 33:48He's not one that does conventions or anything like
- 33:50that. I've not seen them on any
- 33:52comic-con's around here. Man, he's a busy man.
- 33:54He doesn't need personally, just need that money and I have, you
- 33:57know, I've heard people criticized the character.
- 33:58I've not had anybody criticized John Bishop who I think.
- 34:03I think he sells the role he does he does.
- 34:06And he's but he is the comedy relief.
- 34:08And like, you know, it's The pull comparison that people who
- 34:13don't like to think about these things and they're like the era.
- 34:16Say so well he's just Graham, but he's not, he's so different
- 34:20Graham, but a gray of, I think one, I think Bradley Walsh is a
- 34:23better actor. Yeah, I would say that.
- 34:27Well, I think, I think there's a more likeable character.
- 34:30Oh, yeah, he's there is the like those the light relief and
- 34:34watched quite an intense plot. I love that.
- 34:37I love this. The way that that paper flew off
- 34:39the thing and then you get the projection of the angel from the
- 34:41drawing such a again another neat concept.
- 34:44She scrunches it up. So yeah scrunches up then she
- 34:47says it on fire and boom yes such a great visual but it's
- 34:52terrifying. I remember that's watching that
- 34:54I kind of let back a bit. I was like, yeah, doing
- 34:56something really different. Current.
- 34:58It's a proper jump-scare moment and if you're a kid, it's like
- 35:02what's more. What's more terrifying than a
- 35:04weeping? Angel, a weeping angel on fire.
- 35:07And, you know, another idea really?
- 35:09I thought was brilliant in this is I'm saying it.
- 35:11Now when it comes to me because I'll probably forget the time is
- 35:14the fact that the angel can materialize just because the
- 35:17image is in her head. Yeah I mean it's it makes them
- 35:22even more terrifying. It's like how do you possibly
- 35:27actually possibly escape and concept in your head is enough
- 35:30for these things to transport? Yeah, I mean, again that's a
- 35:34whole episode in itself that you can do.
- 35:36And yeah, I want, you know, like you we've talked about all these
- 35:40sort of fabulous, freaky visuals, you know, their house
- 35:42floating in the sky and all of that in black and white the
- 35:45weird tone scenes on the beach. Yeah.
- 35:48Not enough, Doctor Who is on a beach you know, I love Beach
- 35:51Doctor. Who know what I mean?
- 35:53Like, mindwarp his Rich uncle. It's early.
- 35:55But also it's such a simple thing that they do.
- 36:00But so you sell it at this beach, this other worlds,
- 36:04whatever the the lighting and the color of grading and stuff.
- 36:07Like, that's fantastic. But just that double that split.
- 36:11So it's got its got a bit that I'd either side to toys are
- 36:16coming towards each other on their.
- 36:17Yeah. And it's like You didn't need to
- 36:20do that. It would have been creepy enough
- 36:21as it is, but it's just a little extra that makes it more
- 36:25otherworldly and weird and just again a great Visual and I
- 36:29really hope whatever happens over the coming Seasons but
- 36:34these fantastic. They just build on these
- 36:36fantastic visuals and make it as such.
- 36:38It's just I candy all of it in this season and indeed most of
- 36:42the Whitaker era and I just want more and more of that that lying
- 36:46out there that's where Jericho goes from.
- 36:49Being that person who goes, you know, who are you?
- 36:51What are you doing in my house, that character.
- 36:53And then it was not our fault in the first world war.
- 36:57If you think a bunch of stone statues are going to break my
- 37:00resolve, you've got another thing coming, that's when he
- 37:02becomes like okay your companion material now.
- 37:05Yeah. And yeah, look at the way he
- 37:09puts the things on their raids, it just jams.
- 37:11One on Claire's are one on the doctors comedy here, as well.
- 37:15I remember fans complaining about Jericho sticking around
- 37:18because there are another character like there aren't
- 37:21other shows that don't have ten main characters.
- 37:25Yeah, I mean, how many - how many the main characters here?
- 37:29So we've got the dr. Danielle, as Jericho Del Fin de
- 37:35and then the to ravages And they're all very distinct.
- 37:39They're all very distinct. All very different and all get
- 37:42enough time in the episodes. This this is look at that that
- 37:46look and the way, the two Seas cross over each other as well.
- 37:50It's so good. And I also love the fact that
- 37:54this is this idea of this Angel hidden within her who's actually
- 37:58a rogue Angel. So it's so, but used to be a
- 38:02member of the division, right? The other angels are the
- 38:04division members that are going after the Rogue.
- 38:07Yeah. I think so.
- 38:09Yeah and then what happens is the Angel inside Claire.
- 38:12Then does a deal and says well I got one better for you.
- 38:15I've got the doctor here was the member of The Division.
- 38:20I also think it makes the division more interesting.
- 38:24The idea that they do work in the division isn't strictly
- 38:27Gallifreyan. Yeah, it's you know, it do do
- 38:30those other races involved and it just makes it more mysterious
- 38:34because we never get that full explanation of.
- 38:37Again, I do. I want the full explanation.
- 38:40I want, I want the doctors pass to remain a mystery, but I like
- 38:43learning more about it in little chunks.
- 38:47It's Timeless doing dodgy deals with the Weeping Angels.
- 38:50Yeah it's the most fucking interesting thing about people
- 38:53have done with the time Lords that like I understand like the
- 38:58time Lords are as a concept of great but they have the tendency
- 39:01to be very dull if overused like in the 70s and 80s have seen the
- 39:06first 15 minutes of hell, bent, right?
- 39:09I've some of the best time building you'll ever, see, well,
- 39:14we'll get there or such a wonderful episode.
- 39:17Where was his files from the sea Devils as Rassilon?
- 39:20Yeah. Because Timothy Dalton wasn't
- 39:22available. Oh is that why was I not asked
- 39:25him if you don't want to come back when we come to it.
- 39:28So they got someone cheaper. I can't wait to watch that.
- 39:31We that here we are in traditional Quarry because you
- 39:36got to throw one in any way. We like that, they have to
- 39:39appear And yeah she's great isn't she as as year as you
- 39:47shall solve pairing Menace? As I'm sure everybody just stood
- 39:54on that Big Rock. You're trying to save people
- 39:57attending the Saudis mr. Marvel I was crazy Colts.
- 40:00You know where someone stands up in front of them and says right
- 40:03you're going to murder yourselves and go to a better
- 40:05place. I thought when I first watched
- 40:09it and that was her head being projected into the sky.
- 40:12Bye, but it's not. She's just up on the thing.
- 40:13It really reminded me of the opening of the Masters of the
- 40:17Universe live action film. So I used to love as a kid and
- 40:21there's an obscure reference that's why you're here.
- 40:23Okay. One of my favorite films as a
- 40:26kid and there's this moment where skeletor's giant head is
- 40:30broadcast across the planet to everybody.
- 40:33But I mean, look at the scale of this as well.
- 40:36There's it feels like there's about 200 extras there.
- 40:40Yeah. And it doesn't feel like three
- 40:41people. I've been matted 100 then about
- 40:44you've got all sort of burning buildings and things like this.
- 40:47Yeah, and it again, it's what people talk about being impacted
- 40:51covid on Doctor. Who you kind of go.
- 40:53Well, look at this scene, there's loads of people with
- 40:55Missy. Yeah.
- 40:58Yeah. I uh, I don't think your friend
- 41:00was right. Yeah.
- 41:02Well, I think we're going to discuss it on the strangers in
- 41:05space at some point. Just sending my way.
- 41:08All right. I will, I will have that here.
- 41:11What's his name again? Jr.
- 41:13Sorrowful have it for you. All right?
- 41:16Not you for you. Unless he loves us.
- 41:21All fate. I can't comment on what Jo Jr.
- 41:30Cell phone puts out an injunction against me.
- 41:37She just saved his life now. Belch she does she does and you
- 41:41know we get that pay off later. Don't worry of where he goes.
- 41:44I think she saved my life because he's just but it's that
- 41:49desperation everybody. So desperate that when somebody
- 41:51comes along cause we're here to save you, of course they go.
- 41:54It's all a bit Utopia in a way, but everybody's like, okay,
- 41:59we're going to get saved, and they want to believe they're
- 42:00going to get saved. But, you know, there's slow
- 42:03realization that he has that actually.
- 42:06No bones, get inside a little supposed a technically there.
- 42:09They'll get loud passenger at the end, right?
- 42:12Why don't you uh, why are they doing it again?
- 42:15Is it that I think they're creating a No-No there.
- 42:18I think they're turned into sort of energy.
- 42:21I want my. And then ultimately, they're
- 42:24planning on destroying the universe.
- 42:26Resetting it and playing it out over and over and over again.
- 42:30Yes. Right.
- 42:30Okay. Remember now, but passenger
- 42:32needs a lot of fuel for that, right?
- 42:34Okay. So yeah.
- 42:35Passenger it didn't, it is use them as fuel.
- 42:37Not has will be, will be back with the explanations next time,
- 42:41baby, what was the last two, but we forgotten right now but if
- 42:48it's just a little moment of desperation and the collapsing
- 42:51universe and I love this idea that the Universe was completely
- 42:57screwed. It's just played out on such a
- 42:58big scale here in a way that something like that.
- 43:01Love ramen score, I've cut off. There's supposed to be this huge
- 43:04threat to Earth and what UNH, it's just not there.
- 43:07Then they're doing the para Planet thing of saying, right?
- 43:09You see those four Globes over there, that's a couple of
- 43:11Worlds, okay? But because you're not seeing it
- 43:14and there's not other characters, like the Wi-Fi
- 43:17family or somebody like that invested in it, like all you
- 43:21don't cut that to you as its family or something then it just
- 43:23it becomes a bit too basic starter at the Next Generation.
- 43:29Wait I'm getting upset wash them dreary episodes of that like
- 43:33yeah. This creepy kid from there must
- 43:36be a book, you know, of like really creepy kids.
- 43:40I mean, it's can be quite creepy.
- 43:42I mean, they're absolutely bloody mental.
- 43:44And I think that if you deconstruct the behavior of
- 43:47kids, they are weird. Like, we went over to one of
- 43:50Daisy's friends and her kid had this dull that she'd like guy
- 43:55Garrett's the eyes out of and colored in the face and things
- 43:58like that. It's like, you are absolutely
- 44:00text sweetest little girl, you are absolutely terrifying.
- 44:03I am I once worked in a charity shop, you know, and someone
- 44:06donated a load of kids toys. And in there, I was this frog,
- 44:09okay, where's the same? They gouge the eyes out and then
- 44:13they'd put red ink all over the hands like it.
- 44:17I'll keep in doing like a weeping angel.
- 44:21She says it she goes. It's just been killed or sent
- 44:25back in time and she goes well, it was never nice to me.
- 44:27No, no emotional reaction whatsoever.
- 44:31He's going to be a serial killer.
- 44:32I swear. Angela.
- 44:35That was a one bit as well. I was like, this is so like
- 44:37Classico where they're going, no, don't go in front of the
- 44:40statue and the fellow goes oh, don't be so silly.
- 44:43It's just a statue and then, you know, you get grabbed straight
- 44:45away. Yeah, you need what you need,
- 44:47people like that in Doctor Who every now and then, and it is, I
- 44:50call them to get backs of Doctor Who you do X or the man from the
- 44:54ministry. That's right.
- 44:55There was little, yeah, in the way.
- 44:56Yeah, they're there. Just to be sort of cannon.
- 45:00Fodder. Essentially the prove how
- 45:03Dangerous. The threat is because they just
- 45:05don't believe it. I'm on Jericho.
- 45:07Don't look at it. Like every McNally.
- 45:11I've had a really good career. Hasn't a old looking at his
- 45:14credits. I'm like there it is not a show.
- 45:15He hasn't touched. He's just he's, you know, worked
- 45:20consistently without ever being like a star or anything like
- 45:23that, but he's just in the comments that is the best kind
- 45:26of career to have an acting, you know, absolutely is that the
- 45:30secondary characters. But then you can just dip into
- 45:32anything. It's a hard life, an actor's
- 45:35life, though. It's like unless you are super
- 45:38successful or and I mean Successful in the way that he
- 45:41would always classy. A super successful is long
- 45:45periods of not lying are so many actors who have part-time jobs
- 45:48and you know just knowing work regularly and it's a really
- 45:52tough life. I was listening to an interview
- 45:54with Jeffrey beavers the other day and he was saying we were
- 45:56fortunate. We were both actors and very
- 45:59often. Only one of us will be working
- 46:01but one of us will be working, you know.
- 46:05It's not like, now he's just glorious.
- 46:07I, he's on the twin deliver commentary and he waits a whole
- 46:11episode and he's Charming as hell.
- 46:13When Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant talking about, you know,
- 46:15his ridiculous costume with his stupid Space Gun and all of us.
- 46:18And in the beginning of episode two Egos and I Colin I don't
- 46:22think Doctor Who fans are to coined about this story.
- 46:27They call him strata conference is a great bit of drama is what
- 46:31is wonderful. Colin will always see the best
- 46:35in his stories in a way that, you know, when you listen to
- 46:37Peter Davison, he's just completely dumb as dismissive of
- 46:40everything. I see someone trying to get the
- 46:42best though because sometimes I can be a bit weary shit.
- 46:46Why the angel just came out of the TV?
- 46:50Yeah, it's great. Again, just another exciting
- 46:53thing to do with the angel, I know we get a bit of that in the
- 46:57time of angels, but it's still, it's not a crib from The Ring,
- 47:00isn't it? Well, yeah.
- 47:01Scary a scale with a Black hair comes crawling out the Telly.
- 47:05Exactly, you know, they are coming down the stairs and I, I
- 47:08love this. This bit feels like a callback
- 47:11to Blink a bit more than this. Yeah, but even now if you watch
- 47:14but I'm not going to slack off drink or anything like that.
- 47:17But just in terms of the style of direct the direction, it's
- 47:19very early 2000's and you know imagine if that was made mad
- 47:24which is something that always say about Doctor Who but this is
- 47:27a better production, whole fish has better production values
- 47:30than blink but I would hope 15 years.
- 47:32Jean you were doing Productions. I was kind of doing something
- 47:36wrong and we'll be saying that about this in 15 years, time as
- 47:39well. When it's also been reappraised
- 47:41as an absolute classic. But no matter how scary this is,
- 47:44Blink has the one serious jump scared I've ever had in a Doctor
- 47:49Who and that is, you're not looking at the angel Neri you,
- 47:52right. Stop it.
- 47:54When I was first on, I left off my sofa.
- 47:58I'll have him, I've reacted to a doctor who moment like that ever
- 48:01again, also just nobody knew what blind was going to be
- 48:03about. You know, it was especially
- 48:06because people weren't a huge fan of the budget saving
- 48:10episodes of the previous season, that I think everybody was just
- 48:14a bit Mars, not going to be very good, and then they go.
- 48:16Oh, but it's Steven Moffat who, you know, wrote, wrote the good
- 48:19bit of the best story of the first season, or whatever.
- 48:24Claire because I think that's such a solid performance.
- 48:28Yeah. She's a carrot.
- 48:29Saunders, not distinctive really apart from the fact that she's a
- 48:32woman at a time and she's going up against characters like
- 48:35swarming as your and Jericho that all had massive hooks.
- 48:38You think she looks a bit like, Clara a little bit about her
- 48:43eyes. I think that they can look like
- 48:46para but yes, she is great. If anything, she's the one
- 48:51that's slightly under served by This script, you know, she's
- 48:54very much a siphon for the plot, a lot of it but she she's great
- 48:58and she's present and I love a little Cameo and the first
- 49:01episode of the new just like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:04Again you go like I'll whisper being set up for something
- 49:07really big here and excited but yeah she's great especially when
- 49:12she's channeling the angel and we in a point now where you're
- 49:16just not going to have a Duff performance index.
- 49:19Oh no. I think that I think they're all
- 49:23busy. The art one slips through the
- 49:24net, right? I hope so.
- 49:28I mean even I mean we talk about been a that that that that old
- 49:33woman in often 55, Bill Maher. Yeah, people aren't people on a
- 49:38huge fan of her performance either.
- 49:40But I just think, you know, I've seen how she is great.
- 49:45I can't lose tomorrow when you bring her up.
- 49:50I think they will always be. I think the standard of bad
- 49:53acting gets better over the years, but I think there will
- 49:56always be the optical elements. There's a bit and that I think
- 49:59they do show up in all areas of Doctor.
- 50:02Who I think the the worst crime is when you've got a really good
- 50:06actor who's given sort of boring material, I'm talking of Mark
- 50:10a.d. in run-scorer of colos. Yeah, I mean there's so many.
- 50:16Doctor Who has a long history of potentially wasting guest cast,
- 50:20but it's also about who's available for this 14 days or
- 50:25whatever is 18 days that they're shooting an episode.
- 50:28He was available at this time and they go, you go.
- 50:31Oh, we can get Ian McKellen to do the voices of the, in the
- 50:36Snowman. And, you know, we can get
- 50:38Michael Sheen to do the voice-over of house or something
- 50:41like that. And it's like, well, they were
- 50:43the people available at this time to do that, and yes, we
- 50:46Y'all want to see in McKellen way the War Doctor or something
- 50:51like that, but he wasn't available.
- 50:53So that that's just when you get in the van and they were in the
- 50:55show. I've also got no problem with
- 50:57the show reuse and guest characters, I think like give
- 51:01him a different role years later if they're available, I'll for
- 51:03sure. I mean, look at Jack in heels.
- 51:06Fantastic Turner's. Lexa and megaliths well,
- 51:08exactly. The one of the most iconic just
- 51:11descended from the heavens. I was watching.
- 51:15I was listening to To watch you the other day when they did make
- 51:18loss a few weeks back and I love have no clue.
- 51:22You just yeah, she's like that's Barbara sometimes I think she's
- 51:28looking at her phone more than she is the TV.
- 51:33Oh all this stuff is gold. I love with it.
- 51:36Them, these fucking scary ass hands.
- 51:38Coming out of the walls might such a simple concept but just
- 51:43the stone that for stone everywhere.
- 51:45So of course, they can be a Angels everywhere.
- 51:47I wouldn't want to go down that tunnel anyway.
- 51:49No. And that's sort of like you
- 51:52asked leaning into the ultimate foe a bit, isn't it?
- 51:54Was hands coming out the sand? Yeah, it's people complained
- 51:58that the Angels didn't look quite the same in this as well.
- 52:02That was another complaint to that's like, well, that's
- 52:04because this different actresses, playing the Angels
- 52:08playing a lot to learn you know, people stop complaining and
- 52:12start enjoying it, right? Yeah.
- 52:15It's but they're just such a Brilliant Invention and I think
- 52:20they are in the just the pantheon of great Doctor Who
- 52:23monsters. I've just remembered they are in
- 52:2519. I won, are they?
- 52:26And this is where they stay, it doesn't reset.
- 52:28The end of the year, this is why we spend a lot of time with
- 52:31them. Back in the past, in the next
- 52:33episodes up earlier. We have to live out through time
- 52:36through a linear fashion for a bit and there and that's that's
- 52:39where sort of Yaz and Dan have all their time together.
- 52:42So in terms of like a run of companions together, Might have
- 52:45had the longest run. Yeah, what, I mean?
- 52:49Yeah, that's this. Many years off screen, doesn't
- 52:51matter. Mmm, which is why I think people
- 52:54are a bit confused about their mutant reaction to Jericho
- 52:57Steph, they've spent five years with, you know, I think that's
- 53:01an oversight, but I'm looking forward to seeing that last
- 53:04episode again, because I just can't remember.
- 53:07I remember what I said at the time, which was I really enjoyed
- 53:10flux and I'm enjoyed the last episode, but I don't think it
- 53:13quite stuck, The Landing. Let's I will be Interested to
- 53:16see how I feel about is my favorite lesbian moment in all
- 53:20of Doctor Who which is starts flirting with herself, she's
- 53:26desperate to get away with herself.
- 53:30I was going to ask you a question about that, that same,
- 53:32but I'm going to save it for the episode.
- 53:34I have a, I have a couple of thoughts and questions on, how
- 53:39how that, those double doctors were best used to.
- 53:41But okay, another time when times are give a Jodie,
- 53:45Whittaker things to do. That is the ultimate.
- 53:50Is there a spaceship? Is that a big Stone spaceship
- 53:54because if she says, that's how the angel is, where the Angels
- 53:56Came From? Oh wow.
- 53:58Why'd, you know, I hadn't caught that but it doesn't back and
- 54:01it's like a massive Stone ship. Well, I mean we could have we
- 54:05could have seen that. How do we got the second series
- 54:07of class? Couldn't we, we could have seen
- 54:09exactly what the Angels, get up to on their home planet.
- 54:12I'll wait and watch the class pilot the other day.
- 54:14I wish I hadn't sat Michael, he was doing him reviews of himself
- 54:18or I'll give it a go. I only watched the first two
- 54:21episodes, I'm going to do the first episode on to hop TV next
- 54:25season, but I can't remember a thing about it.
- 54:30Apart from political activity, shows up is, when you slack
- 54:33something off is even better. When you are really positive
- 54:36about our probe when to die classic, there was something
- 54:43there that older Peggy said, they like to keep a couple of
- 54:46people alive to scare people. All right.
- 54:50Now that ain't that element of the Angels.
- 54:52That's what Moffat brought to time of angels.
- 54:54Wasn't it? That they like sort of winding
- 54:58people up and yeah, you're frightening them.
- 55:00They don't just want to pop you back to the past.
- 55:02They want to scare the life out of you first.
- 55:05No. Yeah they're a real mysterious
- 55:07evil bunch. I would add is that do we want
- 55:11to know more about the Angels? It'll be just like them as a
- 55:14mystery. I think it's a bit like the Roof
- 55:18Doctor. Han also is nice, but do you
- 55:23really want to get rid of all that mystery?
- 55:25No. Because if you think about it
- 55:26too much, like, for instance, like, what is their own Planet
- 55:31by it go? How does a race like that
- 55:33involved? Yeah, you probably don't want
- 55:36that. So what it's like, it's like, oh
- 55:38yeah, we are just mentioned, make loss, you know, how does
- 55:42the sentient Cactus come to be one?
- 55:46Cactus and a lover Cactus get together at?
- 55:48I mean, like you just don't want to think about It.
- 55:50Yeah no. It's like a lot of Doctor Who if
- 55:53you think about it too much, it doesn't always stand up under
- 55:56the most intense scrutiny. Which is fortunately why we've
- 56:00both managed to get so many episodes of our podcasts.
- 56:04You can pull it apart and you can praise it as much as you
- 56:07want and criticize it too. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 56:12Oh, fuck it out those angels in that Corridor.
- 56:15Yeah, right in Jodie's, scary, bunch.
- 56:20I, I think we've got the kind of use of the Angels, they're not
- 56:26something I want to see back all the time.
- 56:27Like, I want them to show up every three or four or five
- 56:30years, like, it was enough of a gap.
- 56:32I think here wasn't there. Yeah, it's quite fresh again.
- 56:35Yeah. And when they're like, oh we're
- 56:37bringing them back. Everybody was very excited
- 56:40because they haven't been used and you wanted you want to see
- 56:43what somebody else can do with them and they're not doing too
- 56:45much new stuff, but it's enough to make to Warrant them being
- 56:48there and they just a bloody Scare their a great monster.
- 56:52Just the editing here is just how good do you think they work
- 56:56on audio if you listen to any of the Weeping Angels Store easily
- 56:59what, you know, the best angel story that I have experienced as
- 57:03a story using Angels is Touched by an angels by Jonathan Morris
- 57:07which is one of the BBC books I really and it tells a love story
- 57:11over about 30 years and it's very Moffat.
- 57:14See where the angel send someone back in time meet somebody, it's
- 57:19really really clear. But it's such a clever use of.
- 57:22Yeah, that's one to cover them to Harbour TV was just thinking
- 57:25about that, that sounds exactly my sort of thing scale that you
- 57:29got at least a hundred Angels there.
- 57:31I know it's Britain again, you've never seen them en masse
- 57:34like this and it just adds in what one can do, it's like with
- 57:38the Daleks in it, you know, one's scary. 100 is your you
- 57:42did. And what occurs in time of the
- 57:44Angels, what is there about 10 or something like that?
- 57:46I think you see, although that wouldn't most statue star.
- 57:50It's a life at the end of the episode.
- 57:52Oh, it's so scary. Yeah, what sort of half-melted
- 57:54faces and things? It's such a, I mean, I'm not the
- 57:59first person to say it, but that analogy of the first one being
- 58:03like alien, and the second one being like alien.
- 58:05Well, this is the alien franchise when a bit West after
- 58:10the most films, but this is still, like firing on all
- 58:12cylinders and going. We still got interesting stories
- 58:15to tell with these these creatures like effectively this
- 58:19is A bit like tooth and Claw. It's a big long Chase with the
- 58:25monster chasing the heroes. But it's just done so well,
- 58:31yeah, I can't like on those terms.
- 58:33I can't really object to it. Yeah.
- 58:36As I said my my objection is more about it being where it is
- 58:39in this season and oh, it did. I've said a lot of positive
- 58:43things about it but I wasn't lifting bit bored by it on this.
- 58:46This this re-watch and I can understand because the previous
- 58:49one Once Upon Time was so substantial with information and
- 58:53plots and you know whereas this is extremely linear.
- 58:58I think maybe it's just I really like the pace of the other
- 59:02episodes and this is a change of pace and it works but uh perhaps
- 59:05I'm just like no but I want Doctor Who flocks.
- 59:09I've got used to over the last three episodes, a certain style
- 59:12of Storytelling. Every slowed it all down.
- 59:15I'd probably say this is if you're just going to watch and a
- 59:18single episode of this season, this is probably the best one to
- 59:20watch in isolation. Yeah.
- 59:23And the Halloween apocalypse as well often.
- 59:25I really works or sister. I know it's got a lot going on,
- 59:27but it just starts to set up so well.
- 59:29Yeah. But the Halloween apocalypse,
- 59:32just it does the set up so well that you can't help.
- 59:35But go I need to watch the rest of the magical and submit next.
- 59:37Once more of the sontarans are in, come out, what a belter.
- 59:42I looked this is such a great twist.
- 59:45Yeah. Just that.
- 59:45The Rogue Angels made another made their own, their own
- 59:49bargain. And she's selling at the doctor.
- 59:53I like I said, I loved all the Cliffhangers.
- 59:55But this this is like the one everyone remembers, isn't it?
- 59:58The doctor becoming the angel? It will be in that, you know,
- 1:00:03the pantheon of great Cliffhangers.
- 1:00:06It's in that top 10, isn't it? Forget about the resolution
- 1:00:10because it was always going to get this again.
- 1:00:12It was always going to get resolved and in an
- 1:00:14unsatisfactory way I guess you would say.
- 1:00:17She's say yes, his reaction there.
- 1:00:19Yeah. That's where she fancies though.
- 1:00:20You know? Well, no, no, I couldn't because
- 1:00:23it's more on that next time. It's so cool.
- 1:00:32I said it's really my face. And yeah.
- 1:00:36And then sort of the pullback or all the Angels around her.
- 1:00:39Yeah, it's amazing. What a cliffhanger thing.
- 1:00:44I have this spoilt. For me, I think it was leaked
- 1:00:47and somebody said, in the doctor turns into a weeping angel at
- 1:00:49the end, which I'm really again, I read it on Twitter.
- 1:00:52I didn't go seeking a spoiler. I was a little, I think I was a
- 1:00:55little bit annoyed about us. Oh, yeah, we go.
- 1:00:58We've got this post-credits sequence bit credit sequence
- 1:01:02these creditors yet. Sorry, Actually I can see why
- 1:01:11this wasn't in the episode because it's such so furiously
- 1:01:14Pace that last 10 minutes. Yeah, you can't slow it down at
- 1:01:17that point like the Bell stuff earlier in the episode works
- 1:01:21fine but yeah you can't really go.
- 1:01:25Sorry, this is quieter moments, in, at that point, it will be
- 1:01:29like the last 10 minutes of Utopia.
- 1:01:31Remember that? It's an absolute Pace as basic
- 1:01:34as hell and just thrown in a character say, now, if way
- 1:01:36through it, you know, yeah. But I like that, I like it.
- 1:01:41But Doctor Who does the these little holder moments.
- 1:01:45A little just to, you know, like when was the first time we got a
- 1:01:49mid credit sequence. It was Santa, wasn't it Knocking
- 1:01:51on? Oh, I love them.
- 1:01:53Yeah, it's so cheeky. Yeah, especially after such a
- 1:01:58dark but not only to suddenly be like here, Santa Claus but also
- 1:02:02it's like it wouldn't have worked tagged on the end of the
- 1:02:05episode. So get interrupt the titles for
- 1:02:08us. I think I'm magic.
- 1:02:10Her last Christmas is my favorite Christmas.
- 1:02:11Special is brilliant on that story.
- 1:02:14It's not fantastic, Christmas special that.
- 1:02:16And what was the first, Matt Smith one Christmas Carol.
- 1:02:22That's my least favorite, but I really got that.
- 1:02:25I think that's beautiful. I got a big reason though, but
- 1:02:28I'll tell you off. My people are booked sick of me.
- 1:02:30Going on about it now. And it's not that, you know, one
- 1:02:35of my exes was involved with the production or anything like
- 1:02:37that. But you got, there were flying
- 1:02:40sharks. Oh yeah obviously didn't want to
- 1:02:43see about betting Last Christmas.
- 1:02:47I were, you got that really scary horror second and then all
- 1:02:50of a sudden those toys start coming in the room.
- 1:02:52Yeah, laughing my head off. It's a fantastic Christmas
- 1:02:57special. Oh no silly.
- 1:02:59Defeat the monsters with farmed. Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of
- 1:03:05Christmas specials in general, but last Christmas is one of my
- 1:03:09favorites. Matron the companion that never
- 1:03:12was as well. I'll race ya, a little dance.
- 1:03:16Yeah, it's a shame. I wonder if she knew as an
- 1:03:19actress but whether she was being potentially set up to take
- 1:03:23over or not but she say I will scratch you Santa oh yeah, she's
- 1:03:31a bit cycle so you can shake and then nerve you know of having
- 1:03:34her wake up at the end, she's got a list of Christmas films
- 1:03:38and is exactly the films that he's ripped off during this
- 1:03:40episode. And more Legend fucking cheek.
- 1:03:44I'll tell you, he's a cheeky gift.
- 1:03:47And there we go. Our mid seek with that mid
- 1:03:49sequence. He's seen went on a lot longer
- 1:03:51than I remember a tad bit odd. Actually.
- 1:03:54I'm not sure. I'm not sure it even.
- 1:03:56Serve the plot purpose. Yeah, it's an interesting one.
- 1:04:01Looks like there's a lot of caring here in survivors of the
- 1:04:03flocks. Yeah.
- 1:04:05With unit and dude. Indiana Jones.
- 1:04:10I mean, if you prefer the Furious pace of Once Upon Time,
- 1:04:14you're not going to be disappointed in this.
- 1:04:15We skip forward in time a lot, I love a furious Pace lesson about
- 1:04:21case to in the better, but you know, yeah what she gets one of
- 1:04:25our better scenes in that one. You know.
- 1:04:28We'll talk about that next time I play better.
- 1:04:30I prefer the Beverly Crest conversion from Dan time of day.
- 1:04:42We still haven't figured out what's going on with that fellow
- 1:04:44down in those tunnels every way. No berries.
- 1:04:47Just digging tunnels and a just remained unresolved.
- 1:04:55He's just ranting madman. That's what I did.
- 1:05:03Enjoy re-watching that with you but again, I It's my so far.
- 1:05:08It's my least favorite episode of this wrong but I'm aware.
- 1:05:13I'm in a minority there. I think I'm with you, actually.
- 1:05:18It's probably my least favorite so far but marginally.
- 1:05:22Yeah, and I'll just will reiterate it's doing what it
- 1:05:25does exceptionally. Well absolutely it's a great
- 1:05:29Doctor Who by numbers Classic Doctor, Who story that you know
- 1:05:34fans love versus. I'm in it for the flocks.
- 1:05:38I'm not in it for the the Standalone Angels episode You're
- 1:05:43in it for the flag. Well let's just say that if
- 1:05:49that's the weakest. Yeah.
- 1:05:51And the bar is pretty high and now the next episode I remember
- 1:05:55people really loading as well. So it will be quite interesting
- 1:05:58to see what our reactions is to that.
- 1:06:01So I'm not an exam. So it's got the, the fellow in
- 1:06:04it who goes arm and he's in you. Yeah, what a guy now.
- 1:06:09I really really enjoyed survive for the flux when it went out.
- 1:06:12Out. Why don't we go online and see
- 1:06:15how people's opinions? I just know.
- 1:06:16There's going to be at least 80% of people saying his ship.
- 1:06:20Yeah. Well, I remember it being very
- 1:06:22negative and again mean I remember enjoying it, but saying
- 1:06:27my little sort of message group two mates going that was my
- 1:06:31least favorite of the series but let's see what, let's see, what
- 1:06:34happens. Hmm, we've already got that
- 1:06:36booked in. Would you do to catch up with
- 1:06:38the saliva that the flux very soon?
- 1:06:41Exciting stuff.
