- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas, happy to be here. I was just thinking about all the phrases we've learned so far, from the doctor to the market. Lucas: And today, we're going to cover something super basic but essential: water. You know, you can't survive without it. Luna: Absolutely. I remember in Addis, the first thing I always ask for is water. So, what's the word for water? Lucas: Water is ውሃ. Say it with me: ውሃ. Luna: ውሃ. That's simple! Lucas: Yes, and it's used all the time. Now, if you want to say 'I want water', you say ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ. Luna: ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ. That's a mouthful but I'll try. ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ. Lucas: Perfect. And you can use that in a café, at a restaurant, or at someone's home. Luna: So if I'm really thirsty, I just say ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ and someone will bring me water. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want to ask someone if they have water, you say ውሃ አለህ? Luna: ውሃ አለህ? That's handy. Do you have water? Lucas: Right. And a polite way to ask for water is እባክህ ውሃ ስጠኝ, which means 'Please give me water'. Luna: እባክህ ውሃ ስጠኝ. I like that one, very useful. Lucas: Now, let's talk about describing the water. If you want to say 'The water is cold', you say ውሃው ቀዝቃዛ ነው. Luna: ውሃው ቀዝቃዛ ነው. So that's useful when you want cold water specifically. Lucas: Exactly. And you can swap 'cold' for 'hot' later, but today we focus on cold water. Luna: Got it. So I can say 'ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ' and then 'ውሃው ቀዝቃዛ ነው'? That's two sentences. Lucas: Sure, or you can combine them. But keep it simple for now. Luna: Okay, so let me practice all of them. ውሃ, ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ, ውሃ አለህ?, ውሃው ቀዝቃዛ ነው, እባክህ ውሃ ስጠኝ. Lucas: Wow, you nailed all of them. I'm impressed. Luna: Well, I've had a lot of practice. But seriously, these phrases are so practical. Lucas: They are. And speaking of practicality, you know what's also practical? It's like a water for our creative thirst. But let's get back to the phrases. Lucas: Right. So we have ውሃ, ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ, ውሃ አለህ?, ውሃው ቀዝቃዛ ነው, and እባክህ ውሃ ስጠኝ. Luna: Let's put them in a little scene. Imagine I'm at a café and I say 'ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ'. Lucas: And the waiter says 'እሺ' which means 'Okay'. Then you could say 'እባክህ ውሃ ስጠኝ' to be polite. Luna: So I'd say 'ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ' and then 'እባክህ ውሃ ስጠኝ'. That sounds good. Lucas: Perfect. And if you want to specify cold water, you add 'ውሃው ቀዝቃዛ ነው'. Luna: But wait, I could also ask 'ውሃ አለህ?' to the waiter, right? Lucas: Yes, you can. It's a bit more direct, but totally fine. Luna: Great. So I'm ready for my next trip to Ethiopia, now I can confidently ask for water. Lucas: And you'll sound like a local. Let's quickly review all today's phrases one more time. Luna: Sounds good. Lucas: Water is ውሃ. I want water is ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ. Do you have water? is ውሃ አለህ? The water is cold is ውሃው ቀዝቃዛ ነው. And please give me water is እባክህ ውሃ ስጠኝ. Luna: ውሃ, ውሃ እፈልጋለሁ, ውሃ አለህ?, ውሃው ቀዝቃዛ ነው, እባክህ ውሃ ስጠኝ. Got it! Lucas: Perfect. Remember, practice makes progress.
