- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast. All right, we're doing a Remember
- 0:04Speaker 1: Me this morning.
- 0:04Speaker 2: So basically how this works is the producers have organized
- 0:08Speaker 2: a guest for us.
- 0:09Speaker 1: They're on Zoom right now. They're about to join us.
- 0:10Speaker 1: But there's one catch. For right now, we don't know
- 0:13Speaker 1: who it is.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Not even the gender. You're using non-binary terms here.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yes, because we have to ask a series of questions
- 0:19Speaker 2: to try and determine who this person is.
- 0:21Speaker 1: All we know is that we do know who they are.
- 0:24Speaker 3: It'd be embarrassing if we don't.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yes, and it always gets awkward because sometimes you get
- 0:28Speaker 2: them really quickly, other times it doesn't matter how big
- 0:31Speaker 2: they are, you just can't land on the person. So
- 0:34Speaker 2: I am a little bit nervous, but let's start by
- 0:36Speaker 2: saying hello, mystery guest, and we'll hear if this is
- 0:39Speaker 2: a male or a woman.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Hello.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Hello.
- 0:41Speaker 5: Hello.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Oh, I said dude, but let's just check. Wait, can
- 0:44Speaker 1: you confirm that you're a male?
- 0:46Speaker 5: Yes, I can.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Oh, that's a nice voice.
- 0:48Speaker 6: Now, would we know you from like a movie, a
- 0:51Speaker 6: TV show or?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Not music.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Oh, he's not giving us much. Wait, wait, movie or
- 0:56Speaker 2: TV show. So would we know you from a TV show?
- 0:59Speaker 5: Yes. Okay.
- 1:00Speaker 1: We're not getting much. He's going to be a 21.
- 1:02Speaker 3: He's just doing yes. Okay.
- 1:04Speaker 1: What.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Oh, and he laughs. What era? Like when would we
- 1:10Speaker 3: recognize your TV?
- 1:12Speaker 1: Oh, the biggest thing you're known for. What era was that?
- 1:15Speaker 4: I'm going to say in Australia, early aughts.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:20Speaker 3: The early noughties.
- 1:21Speaker 2: And were you like a heartthrob in this TV show?
- 1:27Speaker 4: I was.
- 1:29Speaker 3: So he's a hottie.
- 1:30Speaker 2: And were you, okay, was this a long-running TV show
- 1:34Speaker 2: or did it only have like one or two seasons?
- 1:36Speaker 5: Longer than one or two. Burned bright.
- 1:39Speaker 6: Did you so have like a famous theme song or
- 1:42Speaker 6: something like that?
- 1:43Speaker 3: Oh, that's a good one.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yeah, because like Friends and all that. Oh, okay.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Can we ask what the theme song?
- 1:47Speaker 1: Wait, okay.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Were there other people from this TV show who went
- 1:51Speaker 2: on to have like careers beyond their roles that they
- 1:54Speaker 2: had on that show?
- 1:55Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 1:58Speaker 3: This is really hard. And was it a funny show
- 2:00Speaker 3: or was it, like, quite serious?
- 2:01Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:02Speaker 4: It had humour and drama. You know, I think we
- 2:05Speaker 4: often got classified as a teen soap opera.
- 2:07Speaker 7: Uh-huh, teen.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Okay. Teen early noughties.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I think I'm getting it here from the voice. The
- 2:12Speaker 2: more he talks, the more I could be wrong, though,
- 2:15Speaker 2: so I just don't want to go in.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Do we want one more question, then?
- 2:17Speaker 2: Can you ask a question, because I'm fresh out, of
- 2:19Speaker 2: one that'll get a long answer, please?
- 2:21Speaker 6: Are you over 40 and how did you celebrate your
- 2:23Speaker 6: birthday if you are? What did you do for it?
- 2:25Speaker 5: I am over 40.
- 2:26Speaker 4: My last birthday, I can't remember, which shows you how
- 2:30Speaker 4: past 40 I am.
- 2:32Speaker 5: I went to dinner with my wife. And my kids
- 2:34Speaker 5: probably gave me a card.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Married kids over 40, big in the noughties.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I'm going to take a stab in the dark here
- 2:39Speaker 1: because I think I'm right.
- 2:41Speaker 2: The reason that this came to me is because A,
- 2:43Speaker 2: huge fan, but also B, rewatched it recently.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Is it Ryan from the OC?
- 2:49Speaker 5: Yes, it is.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I knew that voice. Ben McKenzie. Oh, hello, Ben McKenzie.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Oh, hi, Ben.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Hello. Extra.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Extra points would have been given if you'd gotten my
- 3:00Speaker 4: actual name, but that's okay.
- 3:01Speaker 5: You got my character name.
- 3:02Speaker 3: That's important. Okay.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Ryan Atwood.
- 3:04Speaker 2: No full character name. I was a huge fan of
- 3:07Speaker 2: the OC.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Now we've got to remember the theme. Oh, do you
- 3:12Speaker 3: hate hearing that?
- 3:14Speaker 4: Good song.
- 3:15Speaker 5: No, I mean, you could do a lot worse.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:17Speaker 1: What is it, Phantom Planet?
- 3:19Speaker 3: Yes.
- 3:20Speaker 1: How good is that? This takes me back.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I honestly, Ben, every couple of years, if not once
- 3:26Speaker 2: a year, will watch the OC from start to finish.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Like for me, it's like my ultimate TV show.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Huge in my world.
- 3:34Speaker 4: I now have kids come up to me, like kids, teenagers,
- 3:37Speaker 4: and they talk about how what a fan they are
- 3:40Speaker 4: of the show. You know, you weren't even alive when
- 3:42Speaker 4: it came out. They watch it with their parents.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, well, they remade a couple of the
- 3:47Speaker 2: older shows because they redid Beverly Hills 90210. They've redone
- 3:50Speaker 2: Gossip Girl. Has there ever been talks, do you know,
- 3:52Speaker 2: of redoing the OC? And wouldn't it be cool if
- 3:54Speaker 2: you went back and you were one of the, like
- 3:56Speaker 2: you were like Sandy, you were one of the dads?
- 3:59Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I don't know that there's ever
- 4:01Speaker 5: been serious talks, but I'd be up for it, sure.
- 4:03Speaker 3: You'd do it?
- 4:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so, under the right circumstances. It was
- 4:06Speaker 5: a great show. We had a great time. I learned
- 4:08Speaker 5: a lot. I was so young. We were all so young.
- 4:09Speaker 6: Do your kids watch it? How young are your kids?
- 4:13Speaker 6: Have you shown them?
- 4:14Speaker 4: They're too young to watch it, and yet I showed
- 4:17Speaker 4: my middle child, who's 10... the series. And I forgot
- 4:22Speaker 4: that in the pilot episode, the first episode, there is
- 4:25Speaker 4: binge drinking, cigarette smoking, cocaine, and a threesome in the
- 4:30Speaker 4: pilot alone.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:32Speaker 4: And of course, my 10-year-old loved it and wanted to
- 4:34Speaker 4: watch more.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Yes.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Show me more dad yeah how did you handle though
- 4:39Speaker 2: so much fame so young because you were in your
- 4:41Speaker 2: early 20s though weren't you.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Yeah I had graduated from university I was the oldest
- 4:45Speaker 4: of the cast members but I was still yeah I
- 4:47Speaker 4: was early 20s I had no experience that was my
- 4:49Speaker 4: first thing uh effectively and uh I handled it, I don't.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Know, well enough.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 6: I mean, being early 20s would be better than what
- 4:59Speaker 6: we hear with a lot of teen stars where fame.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Screws them up, right? It's hard, especially, I think, being
- 5:05Speaker 5: a child actor, which I was not.
- 5:07Speaker 4: No.
- 5:07Speaker 5: It was a particularly difficult thing.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I mean, and as well, you just said you'd already
- 5:12Speaker 2: graduated from uni, so you'd kind of studied something.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Your whole life wasn't wrapped up in acting. And what
- 5:19Speaker 1: did you study?
- 5:19Speaker 7: Economics.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Economics.
- 5:21Speaker 7: Which would make sense with your current project. Yeah, well,
- 5:23Speaker 7: which is what we're looking at here. So you've deep
- 5:25Speaker 7: dived into crypto, which a lot of people hear this word,
- 5:28Speaker 7: they don't even actually know what crypto is. Is that
- 5:31Speaker 7: what you're working on now?
- 5:34Speaker 4: During the pandemic, I was really bored and a buddy
- 5:36Speaker 4: of mine came to me and said I should buy crypto.
- 5:38Speaker 5: All the celebrities were selling it.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yeah. And my friend has given me terrible financial advice before,
- 5:42Speaker 4: like a lot of us.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Have this friend.
- 5:44Speaker 4: My friend Dave literally has cost me money in the past.
- 5:47Speaker 4: And I said, Dave, I'm not going to buy this stuff.
- 5:49Speaker 5: But what is it?
- 5:49Speaker 4: And he couldn't explain it. I went down a rabbit hole.
- 5:52Speaker 4: I ended up writing a book that was a New
- 5:54Speaker 4: York Times bestseller about my journey into it. But I
- 5:58Speaker 4: also turned a camera on. I made a movie out
- 6:00Speaker 4: of it called Everyone is Lying to You for Money.
- 6:02Speaker 4: And it's about how stupid the whole thing is. I
- 6:05Speaker 4: ended up interviewing Sam Bankman Freed, that guy that's now
- 6:09Speaker 4: in prison.
- 6:10Speaker 5: You probably have seen his picture. The curly haired.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Kid who was a billionaire for a half second and
- 6:17Speaker 4: now is doing 25 years in a federal prison.
- 6:18Speaker 3: He ripped off a whole bunch of people, didn't he?
- 6:21Speaker 5: A whole bunch of people, yeah.
- 6:22Speaker 4: And I interviewed him before it all went sideways. So
- 6:27Speaker 4: it's a comedy documentary film with me and my wife,
- 6:31Speaker 4: Marina Baccarin, who you might also recognize from television and film.
- 6:35Speaker 4: And yeah, I'm really proud of it. And you can
- 6:38Speaker 4: watch it in Australia. The movie's about money and lying.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I know about money because of economics. I know about
- 6:42Speaker 4: lying because I'm an actor and I do it for
- 6:44Speaker 4: a living. I'm a professional BS-er. We do lie for
- 6:49Speaker 4: a living. We're also students of human behavior. And what
- 6:52Speaker 4: I saw with guys like Sam Begman-Fried and others is
- 6:55Speaker 4: Just lying.
- 6:56Speaker 5: I wanted to have fun with it.
- 6:58Speaker 4: I wanted to make a movie that people, that it
- 7:00Speaker 4: would entertain people and not be sort of like a
- 7:02Speaker 4: boring lecture about crypto. And I think I've done that.
- 7:06Speaker 4: The critics are loving it. And honestly, a lot of
- 7:08Speaker 4: people in Australia are watching it, which is phenomenal.
- 7:11Speaker 6: Well, if you want to find out more about the film,
- 7:13Speaker 6: Everyone is Lying to You for Money, head to everyoneislying.com. Hey, Ben,
- 7:20Speaker 6: in a nutshell, crypto, bullshit or not? Like, should we bother?
- 7:24Speaker 4: Bullshit.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Simple advice that your parents probably give you.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Don't invest in something you don't understand. If you don't
- 7:30Speaker 4: actually understand what it is, Don't put your money in. Yeah.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Everyone is lying to you for money. Go and check
- 7:36Speaker 3: it out. There we go. Ben McKenzie.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Ben McKenzie, I want to see an OC reboot and
- 7:40Speaker 2: I want you as the lead.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I just need more OC.
- 7:42Speaker 5: Let's make it happen.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Yes, let's make it happen. Thank you so much for
- 7:45Speaker 1: joining us this morning.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Thanks, guys.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Oh, I regret putting that $ 50, 000 into crypto now.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Oh, see, I've just never bothered understanding it, which is
- 7:53Speaker 2: why I haven't put money into it.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Same as the stocks. I don't understand that.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Stocks I get, which can also be a gamble, but
- 7:59Speaker 6: I still don't actually know What is crypto?
- 8:03Speaker 1: Nor do I.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Do you get it, Sean? Do you know what it is?
- 8:06Speaker 3: Not really.
- 8:07Speaker 5: I know a lot of people that do it. It's
- 8:10Speaker 5: never tickled my fancy.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Even beyond that, NFTs.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Oh, was that the digital drawings? No, what were they?
- 8:18Speaker 3: Is that what it is?
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah, they're like digital images. Something, yeah.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 3: But people were making money off that stuff.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Yeah, but these are the things you've got to be
- 8:26Speaker 1: ahead of the game.
- 8:27Speaker 2: So if you bought crypto early, for example, like I
- 8:30Speaker 2: know someone who cashed it out and got a decent
- 8:33Speaker 2: chunk at its peak because they bought it for nothing.
- 8:36Speaker 2: But now I'm not sure that unless you really know
- 8:39Speaker 2: what you're doing and you make it your full-time job,
- 8:41Speaker 2: same as the stocks, you need to know and watch
- 8:44Speaker 2: it daily.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Yes.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Yeah. Stocks make more sense. Like all our super is
- 8:48Speaker 3: in stocks.
- 8:49Speaker 5: Right?
- 8:50Speaker 3: But they know what they're doing. They're kind of gambling
- 8:52Speaker 3: with it, right? It is gambling.
- 8:53Speaker 1: And what happens if they lose it? We lose our super.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Exactly. Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And it happens, but then it can recover.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I didn't approve of that, did I? When I gave
- 9:00Speaker 1: my money to them.
- 9:01Speaker 6: I think you want your super in stocks because it
- 9:03Speaker 6: can make a return of like six.
- 9:05Speaker 3: To nine percent.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Wait, my money can go up?
- 9:07Speaker 3: Yeah. It can also go down.
- 9:08Speaker 1: But who's making the decisions on behalf of my money?
- 9:10Speaker 6: So to be a super company, whatever company you're with,
- 9:13Speaker 6: and they employ a whole bunch of experts that decide
- 9:16Speaker 6: what they're going to invest their money.
- 9:17Speaker 3: In for Super.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I may as well give people cash to play the pokies.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Well, I know you are fond of the pokies. You
- 9:24Speaker 3: do all right on them too, I've seen.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:27Speaker 3: What's your latest win on the pokies?
- 9:28Speaker 2: I haven't won in a little while, but Kane on
- 9:30Speaker 2: the weekend won like $ 1, 900.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Really?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Forget Super, invest in pokies.
- 9:36Speaker 1: That's it, everyone. The gamble responsibly.
