- 0:00Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:09Speaker 2: All right, Well, I've been following this guy's TikTok and
- 0:12Speaker 2: social media forever since we talked about his you know,
- 0:15Speaker 2: great grandfather, Kevin Miller back you all remember him from
- 0:19Speaker 2: the Heart of Steel. Now he's doing so much more
- 0:22Speaker 2: and he's back on my podcast on One Leg Up
- 0:24Speaker 2: with Alex Herret. First of all, Kevin, it's been a while,
- 0:26Speaker 2: haven't been.
- 0:28Speaker 3: I've been great, Alex. I've been great. I mean I'm
- 0:30Speaker 3: doing the same. I'm following you all the time on
- 0:33Speaker 3: TikTok and your social media and watching all the stuff
- 0:36Speaker 3: you're involved in, and you inspire me. Man, you know
- 0:40Speaker 3: you're you're uh. I enjoy I enjoy watching your videos
- 0:44Speaker 3: and stuff. But I've been busy just continue writing books
- 0:47Speaker 3: and stuff and hanging out with the family here and
- 0:49Speaker 3: in sunny and very warm Arizona. We uh, you know,
- 0:53Speaker 3: we're in California for a while, but now we're back
- 0:55Speaker 3: in Arizona and enjoying the heat.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Well, it's seem like you've been diving more into the
- 1:01Speaker 2: Native American you know, writing. So tell us what the
- 1:04Speaker 2: latest is.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, the latest the book I'm writing right now
- 1:09Speaker 3: is called Blood of Yara Maya and it's set in
- 1:15Speaker 3: the the Brazilian Amazon.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So it's it's an interesting story.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I'm really having fun writing this guy's I should have it.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I should have it published probably in about another month.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I plan on doing it about like next month. And uh,
- 1:33Speaker 3: the story is basically, you know, a young young protagonist
- 1:36Speaker 3: is a twenty five year old gen Z Stanford grad
- 1:40Speaker 3: kind of you know, spoiled rich kid from Malibu.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And she is bored in her life.
- 1:47Speaker 3: She's got a relationship that's broken up, and she she
- 1:50Speaker 3: she takes on this. She wants to be an assistant
- 1:53Speaker 3: to a doctor who's working in the Amazon to finish
- 1:57Speaker 3: her thesis. And uh, she ends up going down there
- 2:01Speaker 3: to do this, and and finds herself alone in the
- 2:04Speaker 3: Amazon because when she gets there, the doctor's not there,
- 2:07Speaker 3: and the boat leaves and the radio doesn't work and
- 2:10Speaker 3: she has no way to get there. So she's so
- 2:13Speaker 3: as the book opens up, it's already she's already been
- 2:15Speaker 3: there a week and she's you know, desperate to know
- 2:17Speaker 3: what to do, and you know, and and uh, basically it's, uh,
- 2:22Speaker 3: the the doctors down there studying an indigenous tribe that
- 2:27Speaker 3: has an unusually long lifespan and trying to figure out why.
- 2:30Speaker 3: But he needs a botanist and and the young lady's
- 2:33Speaker 3: a botanist and they're going to study this year a
- 2:36Speaker 3: maaya tree that has this resin that seems to be
- 2:40Speaker 3: associated with their unusually long life.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Uh So, anyway, that's kind of where the book.
- 2:46Speaker 3: That book is and just having fun writing it and
- 2:50Speaker 3: it should be out in another month.
- 2:51Speaker 1: You you know, you.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Can check my website for updates on author Kevinmeller dot com.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Well, and you've been.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Doing you've been doing some other events, like I think
- 3:02Speaker 2: you're going out in the community to meet some of
- 3:03Speaker 2: your fans and all that, right.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I actually have a book signing this October,
- 3:10Speaker 3: October eighteenth, and uh right near Scottsdale, Arizona.
- 3:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 3:16Speaker 3: So so I'll be out there with all my books
- 3:20Speaker 3: and signing autographs and you know, just meeting people and
- 3:24Speaker 3: talking to other authors. You know, those events are great
- 3:26Speaker 3: because you know authors, you can talk to other authors
- 3:28Speaker 3: and you know, see what they're doing and bounce ideas
- 3:32Speaker 3: off each other. So yeah, that's a lot of fun
- 3:35Speaker 3: to do. And I've got my I finished my time
- 3:37Speaker 3: travel series I've got a book A four, a series
- 3:40Speaker 3: of four books kind of a time travel fiction, time travel.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Historical romance type thing.
- 3:46Speaker 3: So people who are into time travel romance, like the
- 3:49Speaker 3: Outlander type of thing would probably enjoy the series, the
- 3:53Speaker 3: time Piece series.
- 3:55Speaker 1: So again, that's up up on my website.
- 3:57Speaker 3: And and uh yeah, I was just I was ready
- 4:00Speaker 3: to after finishing book four, I was ready to start
- 4:03Speaker 3: a you know, a different, different genre, different book to
- 4:06Speaker 3: just kind of step out of that world for a while.
- 4:08Speaker 1: But it was a lot of fun right in the series.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Now, if you follow Kevin on TikTok and social media
- 4:14Speaker 2: and you see all the beautiful covers, I know you're
- 4:16Speaker 2: a graphic designer. Did you create a lot of your covers?
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I create them all I do.
- 4:21Speaker 3: The only two that I haven't, well I was involved
- 4:24Speaker 3: in is the two that are that are traditionally published
- 4:27Speaker 3: by Headline Books out there in West Virginia. Shout out
- 4:30Speaker 3: to them. But yes, all the book covers are my
- 4:33Speaker 3: own design. I've designed some book covers for other authors
- 4:37Speaker 3: as well.
- 4:38Speaker 1: You know, it's something I like to do.
- 4:39Speaker 3: It's I enjoy it because it's like you know, I
- 4:42Speaker 3: That's why I kind of.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Went back to some self publishing a lot of my books.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Just to have that control, you know, the control over
- 4:48Speaker 3: the book cover, the control over how I market it,
- 4:52Speaker 3: you know, and I kind of a lot of authors
- 4:55Speaker 3: are doing that these days. You know, some of them
- 4:56Speaker 3: are more self publishing more and more because you know,
- 4:59Speaker 3: it's you know, it's kind of a next Week where you.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And you owner and you own all your rights when you.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Do that, yeah, exactly, And the and the you know,
- 5:08Speaker 3: the royalties are higher too. I mean, you get most
- 5:12Speaker 3: you know, traditionally published houses will pay you ten percent.
- 5:15Speaker 1: They'll give they'll give you a.
- 5:16Speaker 3: You know, an advance and then they'll pay you ten
- 5:19Speaker 3: percent royalties.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Or you know, post it on Amazon.
- 5:22Speaker 3: You're getting like seventy percent royalty for most everything.
- 5:26Speaker 1: So so long you market, you're good.
- 5:29Speaker 2: We're going to get to why you're wearing your air
- 5:31Speaker 2: on the State shirt in a minute, because it does
- 5:32Speaker 2: impact New York City and New York Giants football, because look,
- 5:36Speaker 2: I'm excited for the preseason. I know you watched it
- 5:38Speaker 2: very closely. But before we get to that, let's follow
- 5:41Speaker 2: upon your great grandfather Stanley. Yeah, wowowski has he come
- 5:45Speaker 2: to life yet? Are you bringing him to life in
- 5:47Speaker 2: in movies. What's up with all the projects there with
- 5:50Speaker 2: that we've.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Got, Yeah, we've you know, that's a Hollywood's Those things
- 5:53Speaker 3: take a long time.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Sometime.
- 5:54Speaker 3: We had a TV series set up with the ID
- 5:58Speaker 3: Network and they they kind of backed out on that recently.
- 6:02Speaker 3: You know, That's kind of how it goes sometimes. But
- 6:05Speaker 3: so that kind of fell through the cracks. But we're
- 6:07Speaker 3: still pitching it to production companies for the feature film
- 6:13Speaker 3: and you know, just actively working on it, just kind
- 6:15Speaker 3: of waiting.
- 6:16Speaker 1: There's a lot we have a lot of.
- 6:17Speaker 3: People interested, but Hollywood has slowed down so much, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 3: from the strike and from a lot of the you know,
- 6:25Speaker 3: the stuff that's gone on the last couple of years
- 6:27Speaker 3: in Hollywood, and that's kind of slowed production down, it
- 6:30Speaker 3: slowed green lighting projects.
- 6:32Speaker 1: So I just have to be patient. You know.
- 6:34Speaker 3: I'm very confident that, you know, we're going to get
- 6:37Speaker 3: this thing greenlit for film and possibly for some TV
- 6:41Speaker 3: you know as well. So we're just you know, I
- 6:45Speaker 3: just keep pushing away.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And you know, I have.
- 6:48Speaker 3: A friend of mine, Kevin Sizemore, who's an actor in Hollywood,
- 6:53Speaker 3: has own production company who optioned the book and he's
- 6:56Speaker 3: constantly pitching it and pushing and he's got a lot
- 6:59Speaker 3: of recent projects that he's greenlit, so he I know
- 7:02Speaker 3: I'm in there, and I know I have a lot
- 7:03Speaker 3: of confidence in him that he's going to get it done.
- 7:06Speaker 3: So you will be the first to know, my friend.
- 7:08Speaker 3: As soon as I have.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Something, we'll do red carpet interviews if there's ever a
- 7:12Speaker 2: movie in there. You know, Hey, I got to ask
- 7:14Speaker 2: you though, because Youngstown, Ohio, it does get into the
- 7:17Speaker 2: news sometimes and whatnot. Do you follow all the trends
- 7:20Speaker 2: of Youngstown because of that, That's where the story started.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And I'm sure podcasts and radio station is there still
- 7:27Speaker 2: call you up?
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I do, I yeah, definitely. And the other
- 7:32Speaker 1: thing I was going to do.
- 7:33Speaker 3: The one of the things I wanted to do exces
- 7:35Speaker 3: is I want to go back to Ohio and now
- 7:38Speaker 3: that I know where the property was, it was like
- 7:40Speaker 3: a ninety two acre property where this uh More my
- 7:44Speaker 3: grandfather lived and the murders took place. The murder took place,
- 7:48Speaker 3: and I want to go walk that property with video,
- 7:51Speaker 3: you know, I want to record that. And I started
- 7:53Speaker 3: to do that and a lot of the people I
- 7:55Speaker 3: was working with that wanted to buy the rights to
- 7:57Speaker 3: the TVs here and stuff, So like, no, no, no, don't
- 7:59Speaker 3: do that because we want to We want you to
- 8:01Speaker 3: do that and you know and get your genuine reaction
- 8:06Speaker 3: to it, you know, but you know that might take
- 8:08Speaker 3: a while. So I'm I'm planning a trip, you know,
- 8:11Speaker 3: probably you know, the next couple of months or very
- 8:14Speaker 3: soon to go back and walk that property, do a
- 8:17Speaker 3: video of it, and you just kind of talk about
- 8:19Speaker 3: the story as I do that, and you know, just
- 8:23Speaker 3: I like to go walk around the area in Southington
- 8:26Speaker 3: and talk to the locals, talk to the people and stuff,
- 8:28Speaker 3: and just you know, some people it's funny because some
- 8:30Speaker 3: people say, yeah, I kind of remember something about that story.
- 8:33Speaker 2: You know.
- 8:33Speaker 3: It's you know, but uh, and it's interesting because Southington
- 8:37Speaker 3: where the where the farm was, where my grandparents you know, lived,
- 8:41Speaker 3: and the tragedy happened.
- 8:43Speaker 1: It's it's not changed. It's like a time capsule back there.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You know. You go back there and it's like you
- 8:48Speaker 1: could be standing.
- 8:48Speaker 3: In nineteen twenty as easy as you could be standing
- 8:51Speaker 3: in you know, twenty twenty five. So it's fascinating. But yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 3: I do stay in contact with a lot of people.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I do get emails. People drop in on me sometimes
- 9:00Speaker 3: with emails and say, I read your book, you know,
- 9:03Speaker 3: and I've got some questions for you, and would you
- 9:05Speaker 3: be interested in talking to you know, So that does
- 9:07Speaker 3: happen a lot still.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So the book it was true crime, but also it
- 9:14Speaker 2: had a lot of yeah in to it too. How
- 9:16Speaker 2: did you balance that out? Yeah, the yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 3: When I want to go write that book out, it's
- 9:21Speaker 3: like it's a true crime story, but I wanted to
- 9:24Speaker 3: write it in a novel format. I wanted to be
- 9:27Speaker 3: like a not a documentary or a biography or anything.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I wanted it to be an actual novel that people
- 9:34Speaker 3: can just dive into and visualize the story through my
- 9:37Speaker 3: grandfather's eyes, you know, kind of a cinematic, you know,
- 9:42Speaker 3: version of that.
- 9:42Speaker 1: So when you read the.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Book, it's it's an emotional book because you're living the
- 9:47Speaker 3: story and you kind of through his eyes and and
- 9:49Speaker 3: you know, and feeling it and feeling the you know,
- 9:53Speaker 3: the the challenges and the and the hurt and the
- 9:56Speaker 3: tragedy and the you know, and and him overcoming I mean,
- 9:59Speaker 3: his his story is very inspirational.
- 10:02Speaker 1: You know.
- 10:02Speaker 3: It's twelve thirteen year old boy, you know that could
- 10:06Speaker 3: overcome such a tragedy and rescue his family and you know,
- 10:10Speaker 3: and you know, and it was.
- 10:13Speaker 2: A euro And also then you document the love story
- 10:15Speaker 2: between your grandmother and grandfather. I mean that's part of
- 10:17Speaker 2: this too.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's definitely about part of it.
- 10:20Speaker 3: That's that's kind of part three of the story, because
- 10:22Speaker 3: the first part of the story is, you know, the tragedy,
- 10:25Speaker 3: how it happened, the mystery, the murder mystery, everything that
- 10:28Speaker 3: goes on after my grandfather wakes up and finds his
- 10:32Speaker 3: father murdered in his bed and there's his mother is
- 10:36Speaker 3: bound and gagged and claiming that men broke in and
- 10:40Speaker 3: murdered the father and stole money and stuff. So that
- 10:43Speaker 3: first part's the investigation and how things fall apart and
- 10:46Speaker 3: go just sideways. And then the second part is when
- 10:50Speaker 3: my grandfather and his siblings is thrown into that orphanage
- 10:53Speaker 3: and Warren Ohio, that terrible place that he decides to
- 10:56Speaker 3: escape from a twelve years old to go take hop
- 10:59Speaker 3: a train in Chicago and and make enough money to
- 11:02Speaker 3: go back and bust his siblings out and take care
- 11:04Speaker 3: of them.
- 11:05Speaker 1: And then the third part is kind of his story where.
- 11:08Speaker 3: He meets my grandmother, my Irish grandma, Mma and you know, and.
- 11:13Speaker 1: That that's kind of how it goes. That that's that's his.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Finding, you know, coming full circle and finding that love
- 11:20Speaker 3: that he needed in his life after sufferings and he.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Began Look, he ended up in the Prohibition era, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 2: it was right there, and that's why he made his
- 11:28Speaker 2: money for his wife. I mean it was pretty that's
- 11:30Speaker 2: pretty remarkable.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Too, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, because he got initially got
- 11:34Speaker 3: a job in a steel mill that wasn't really doing
- 11:37Speaker 3: enough for him, and there he got involved with bootlegging
- 11:40Speaker 3: because that was the time, that was the era, and
- 11:42Speaker 3: he made enough money doing that and he just kind
- 11:44Speaker 3: of stayed in it for a while, you know, and
- 11:47Speaker 3: kind of did that. They in the in the book,
- 11:49Speaker 3: you know, they my grandparents or my grandfather owned a speakeasy,
- 11:53Speaker 3: you know, bar and stuff, and you know there there
- 11:58Speaker 3: was a story that one time the cops showed up
- 12:01Speaker 3: to his house and he had a whole bunch of
- 12:03Speaker 3: liquor in the attic, you know, and they were pressing
- 12:05Speaker 3: him and you know as to you know, you guys,
- 12:07Speaker 3: got any illegal liquor in here? And stuff, and he goes, yeah,
- 12:09Speaker 3: it's all up in the attic, you know, he just
- 12:11Speaker 3: told him that jokingly, and they're like, oh, you know,
- 12:14Speaker 3: he just thought he was kidding and left.
- 12:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 12:16Speaker 3: So he was an interesting character. He's an interesting guy,
- 12:20Speaker 3: and I wish i'd have known more when he was
- 12:22Speaker 3: alive and I could ask him questions, although I know
- 12:25Speaker 3: he wouldn't have answered most.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Let me ask you this because I feel like in
- 12:29Speaker 2: your writing, there's got to be that thread which we
- 12:31Speaker 2: were first pitched about many years ago, not keeping family secrets, right,
- 12:36Speaker 2: you know, you want to bring up those secrets, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 2: the family, and I feel like that's reflected in all
- 12:40Speaker 2: of your writing.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Right, yeah, it is, it is, you know because with
- 12:45Speaker 3: this story, I struggled and I talked a lot with
- 12:48Speaker 3: my dad when he was still alive, and it's like
- 12:51Speaker 3: my grandfather took this story to his grave, him and
- 12:53Speaker 3: his siblings, you know, for over one hundred years.
- 12:55Speaker 1: He didn't want that truth revealed.
- 12:57Speaker 3: But I decided I want to tell this true just
- 13:00Speaker 3: because the story was so it's inspirational. It touched my heart,
- 13:04Speaker 3: you know, and it's like I need to tell this
- 13:06Speaker 3: story because I think it's going to touch other people's hearts.
- 13:08Speaker 3: And I think it's gonna people are going to relate
- 13:10Speaker 3: to this story, you know. And he truly had a
- 13:14Speaker 3: heart of steel, you know, and I think people will
- 13:16Speaker 3: relate to the story. And that's why I just decided
- 13:19Speaker 3: to share it, because I just was in awe of
- 13:22Speaker 3: his bravery and his courage at such a young age.
- 13:25Speaker 3: You know, you don't see that today. You know, you
- 13:27Speaker 3: don't see that kind of grit today. You know, I
- 13:31Speaker 3: don't think from from most of our youth. You know,
- 13:34Speaker 3: it's just kind of been lost over the generations, you know.
- 13:37Speaker 3: So so I thought I was a story that needed
- 13:39Speaker 3: to be told. And you know, I'm sorry, Grandpa, I
- 13:42Speaker 3: love you, you know, but I wanted to tell your story.
- 13:45Speaker 2: You know what. Maybe he's you know, maybe he's approved
- 13:49Speaker 2: of by inspiring you to write so many more books
- 13:51Speaker 2: and be an award winning author all at the same time.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Here, Yeah that, you know, you know what, that's a
- 13:57Speaker 3: nice thought. I liked that thought. It really is. Because
- 14:01Speaker 3: the second book I wrote is inspired by my great
- 14:03Speaker 3: great grandmother, who was Native American. She was Ohio Seneca
- 14:08Speaker 3: and she was married to my Irish grandfather. And that
- 14:10Speaker 3: one takes place in like the Civil War, and I
- 14:12Speaker 3: did a lot of research.
- 14:13Speaker 1: On that one as well.
- 14:14Speaker 3: So yeah, I just kept going, you know, I kept
- 14:17Speaker 3: going with that, and maybe that's true. You know, maybe
- 14:20Speaker 3: that is true because I just found a love through
- 14:23Speaker 3: his story. I found a love for writing and decided
- 14:27Speaker 3: to become an author late in life, you know, go figure.
- 14:30Speaker 2: But all right, well, you know, since I've rebranded to
- 14:33Speaker 2: one Leg Up Alex and one Leg Up with Alex
- 14:37Speaker 2: and whatnot, I've often brought on people that are helping
- 14:40Speaker 2: others have one leg up. So you mentioned the youth.
- 14:42Speaker 2: When you go to these conferences, are you finding that
- 14:44Speaker 2: people are turning to you for that advice to have
- 14:48Speaker 2: one leg up on their own writing as well? Oh?
- 14:51Speaker 1: Definitely.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Yeah, Like I said, when we're yeah, even as I'm
- 14:55Speaker 3: sitting at the tables and talking to different people and
- 14:58Speaker 3: coming up, there's a lot of young young you know,
- 15:00Speaker 3: youngsters and young teenagers and young adults and stuff that
- 15:03Speaker 3: come up and look at my books. And I get
- 15:05Speaker 3: a chance to stand there and just talk to them,
- 15:07Speaker 3: you know, and ask them questions and and you know,
- 15:10Speaker 3: and they'll ask questions about the book and stuff, and
- 15:12Speaker 3: some of them do they want to write or you know,
- 15:15Speaker 3: a lot of times I'll ask them, you know, do
- 15:16Speaker 3: you ever think about writing a story? As we get
- 15:18Speaker 3: into a conversation, and a lot of there's so many
- 15:21Speaker 3: people that want to write stories that just don't know
- 15:24Speaker 3: where to start or they just don't get around to
- 15:26Speaker 3: doing it. So my advice to them is, you know,
- 15:29Speaker 3: just sit down and start writing. It doesn't have to
- 15:31Speaker 3: be perfect, don't worry about, you know, how good or.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Bad it is.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Just just write the story, you know, because everybody has
- 15:38Speaker 3: a story in them, you know, and I think most
- 15:41Speaker 3: people could write a book, you know, most people could
- 15:43Speaker 3: find something in their family or their experiences to you know,
- 15:47Speaker 3: to write. And yeah, I definitely definitely one leg up,
- 15:51Speaker 3: you know, and find that, you know, find that passion,
- 15:56Speaker 3: you know.
- 15:56Speaker 2: But but those who are sort of breaking out into this,
- 15:59Speaker 2: like for the first time an author and I'm watching
- 16:01Speaker 2: this right now listening to us, Yeah, but they're stuck
- 16:04Speaker 2: in the corporate world. Because if I'm not miss saying,
- 16:05Speaker 2: you were in the corporate world, and of course you
- 16:07Speaker 2: served our military and then once all that was completed,
- 16:10Speaker 2: you dove into writing. Yeah, what's the message of saying, Hey,
- 16:14Speaker 2: maybe too late to be right, It's never too late.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Oh, never too late. It's never too late.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I'm I started writing in my sixties, you know, And
- 16:23Speaker 3: I mean I'd always been a professional web developer, a
- 16:26Speaker 3: technical writer and stuff.
- 16:27Speaker 1: But it's not the same thing.
- 16:28Speaker 3: But but I've always had these stories inside me, you know,
- 16:31Speaker 3: I've always had that inside and if you if you're
- 16:34Speaker 3: a person who has that same kind of creativity stories,
- 16:39Speaker 3: it's just stuff that just has to get out and
- 16:41Speaker 3: get it on paper.
- 16:42Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:42Speaker 3: It's like, it is never too late to start writing.
- 16:45Speaker 3: And it's never been easier to publish a book than today,
- 16:49Speaker 3: you know, because you just go you can use Amazon,
- 16:52Speaker 3: you can use you know, ingram Sparks. There's so many
- 16:54Speaker 3: platforms for self published authors to publish their work and
- 16:59Speaker 3: get it out there. You know, if you go through Ingrams, Spark,
- 17:02Speaker 3: you know that you can get your book in libraries.
- 17:04Speaker 3: I've got a lot, you know a lot of my
- 17:06Speaker 3: books and libraries, you know, because they go on and
- 17:09Speaker 3: they just buy them and you know, and get them
- 17:12Speaker 3: out there.
- 17:13Speaker 2: So your stories are also historical, I mean, that's the
- 17:16Speaker 2: other part of this. They're historical writings. And I feel
- 17:19Speaker 2: like you're preserving the legacies of your family. What's that
- 17:24Speaker 2: mean to you when you hear something like that.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Oh, definitely, no, No, I mean it's it's definitely preserving
- 17:29Speaker 3: the legacy. And the other thing too, ox, which is
- 17:32Speaker 3: really cool. I have two younger daughters. I've got one
- 17:34Speaker 3: who's nineteen and one who's twenty three, and they feed
- 17:37Speaker 3: me a lot of material because.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I listen to how they talk.
- 17:42Speaker 3: I listen to their conversations and their experiences, you know,
- 17:45Speaker 3: with their with life, with their boyfriends, with their jobs,
- 17:48Speaker 3: with school, and how they talk and stuff. And one
- 17:51Speaker 3: of the things for me is I'm leaving in these
- 17:55Speaker 3: books is when they go to they don't always read
- 17:59Speaker 3: my books, you know, I try. I don't push it
- 18:01Speaker 3: on them and stuff because they're so busy in their lives.
- 18:03Speaker 3: But I know that maybe one day when I'm not
- 18:06Speaker 3: here and they sit down and they start reading all
- 18:08Speaker 3: my books and going through everything, They're going to recognize conversations.
- 18:12Speaker 3: They're going to recognize themselves in my writing, you know.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And that's kind of a legacy that I'm leaving for
- 18:18Speaker 3: them too, you know, because they get.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Me curiosity into their own family tree now too.
- 18:25Speaker 3: You know, exactly it does, and it preserves and it
- 18:28Speaker 3: gives them something that to pass down and say, yeah,
- 18:30Speaker 3: this was your grandfather, this is your you know, great
- 18:33Speaker 3: great grandfather's story, and you know, and uh yeah, definitely,
- 18:37Speaker 3: it definitely seals I mean, that's the funny thing.
- 18:39Speaker 1: About books, you know, it does. It seals a legacy.
- 18:42Speaker 3: You know, it gives us history, it gives us you know,
- 18:46Speaker 3: an escape, and and it does allow me to leave
- 18:50Speaker 3: those kind of messages to my children and grandchildren.
- 18:54Speaker 1: So very very cool.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Very amazing. Well I got to ask you this then, Well,
- 19:00Speaker 2: we know you're a big sports guy, so we're going
- 19:02Speaker 2: to do that in one second for sure. But as
- 19:07Speaker 2: you're writing, what does it mean to be that expressive self?
- 19:09Speaker 2: I feel like there's such a form of expression there,
- 19:11Speaker 2: not just putting the words on it, but the way
- 19:13Speaker 2: you do it, you know.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Yeah, everybody, every author has their writing process, you know,
- 19:20Speaker 3: and they're all different. There's no right or wrong way
- 19:23Speaker 3: to write a book, you know. And the first book,
- 19:26Speaker 3: when I wrote Hard to Steal, it's like I had
- 19:28Speaker 3: to kind of learn how to write a book. It
- 19:30Speaker 3: took me three years to write that book because I
- 19:32Speaker 3: had to learn how to write and you know, go
- 19:35Speaker 3: through an editor and just kind of figure it out.
- 19:37Speaker 3: And I've got you know, I've re edited that book
- 19:40Speaker 3: several times to make it the best it can be.
- 19:42Speaker 3: But then as each as I write each book, I
- 19:44Speaker 3: get better and better. And as I learn, I'm constantly learning,
- 19:47Speaker 3: constantly reading other books, you know, listening to other authors,
- 19:52Speaker 3: famous authors, how they write their processes and compare that
- 19:56Speaker 3: to my own and use some of their ideas. I
- 19:57Speaker 3: have my own ideas, but yeah, you kind of cate
- 20:00Speaker 3: your own process of writing and it just kind of
- 20:02Speaker 3: comes to you, you know. So there's and I said,
- 20:06Speaker 3: like I said, there's no right or wrong way to
- 20:08Speaker 3: do it, you know, just sit down and write and
- 20:11Speaker 3: and be honest with the you know, with the writing.
- 20:14Speaker 3: You know, sometimes you have to be real into it.
- 20:17Speaker 3: There's sections of writing that are so emotional to me
- 20:20Speaker 3: that you know, I get emotional and have to stop
- 20:22Speaker 3: sometimes because and and that's how I look at is
- 20:26Speaker 3: if this has affected me like this, I think the
- 20:28Speaker 3: reader is going to feel that too.
- 20:29Speaker 1: They're going to feel that through the pages.
- 20:32Speaker 3: So you kind of have to get to get to
- 20:34Speaker 3: that point to go really deep with your writing, you know,
- 20:37Speaker 3: and honest with that that would be my advice.
- 20:41Speaker 2: And of course I love to blog. It's a love
- 20:44Speaker 2: than writing. So do you blog as well or is
- 20:47Speaker 2: it mainly all through books?
- 20:48Speaker 1: That's mostly through books.
- 20:50Speaker 3: I used to start a blog, but I just sometimes
- 20:52Speaker 3: I just don't have the time to do that. I'd
- 20:54Speaker 3: like to start up a blog and again, you know,
- 20:57Speaker 3: and maybe or youtubing or something that kind of to
- 21:00Speaker 3: put myself out there as a resource for you know,
- 21:04Speaker 3: young authors or other authors, you know, to bounce ideas
- 21:07Speaker 3: off or to you know, kind of share how my
- 21:11Speaker 3: process goes and my works and different things.
- 21:14Speaker 1: So and I'll probably do that at some point.
- 21:17Speaker 2: But all right, now the fun part because you are
- 21:22Speaker 2: wearing Arizona State. Oh yeah, I talk to you before
- 21:25Speaker 2: we talk about before kickoff, I gotta bring you on.
- 21:28Speaker 2: What can Giant fans expect from mister Scabadough. I mean,
- 21:30Speaker 2: I was excited when they drafted it.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Cam Scataboo. Okay, now there's there's a baller, there's a ballplayer.
- 21:39Speaker 3: I think New York Giants was probably one of the
- 21:42Speaker 3: best places for Cam Scataboo because this young man is
- 21:47Speaker 3: just tough as nails.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I mean, he just fits the new York Giants.
- 21:51Speaker 3: You know, idea of what a football player should be.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I've watched I've watched Scataboo for the last couple years
- 22:00Speaker 3: at ASU, and what what New York Giant fans should
- 22:03Speaker 3: expect is A is a young guy and that's gonna
- 22:06Speaker 3: come in there and just be a steamroller, man.
- 22:09Speaker 1: I mean he is.
- 22:10Speaker 3: What he brings to the game, not just his physicality
- 22:14Speaker 3: and his phenomenal athleticism. I mean, I've never seen anyone
- 22:17Speaker 3: that can take hits and just bounce off and just
- 22:19Speaker 3: keep going, but he brings a leadership, you know, he
- 22:23Speaker 3: brings a leadership to uh, you know, to the whole team.
- 22:27Speaker 3: It's just it's like contagious. His attitude, his leadership is contagious.
- 22:31Speaker 3: And that's kind of what helped ASU. I mean, Ahu's
- 22:34Speaker 3: got a lot of talent besides Cam Skataboo, but he
- 22:38Speaker 3: was the heart and soul of that team last year
- 22:40Speaker 3: and just fires everybody up, you know, and it just
- 22:43Speaker 3: and he's and.
- 22:44Speaker 2: He was targeted a lot in that championship game. I'm
- 22:46Speaker 2: not mistaken too.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I mean think about the championship game. The
- 22:50Speaker 1: championship game. Yeah, he just right off the bat.
- 22:52Speaker 3: I mean, he just comes out busting, you know, busting loose.
- 22:55Speaker 3: He's hard to say. You're not gonna stop cam Skataboo.
- 22:58Speaker 3: You can try to contain him, but you're not going
- 23:00Speaker 3: to stop him. And the game, you know, the playoff
- 23:02Speaker 3: game against Texas, which hardbreaking, but the young man was
- 23:08Speaker 3: the MVP, you know, in a loss, you know, because
- 23:12Speaker 3: he what he rushed for like one hundred and forty
- 23:14Speaker 3: three yards. I think he had ninety nine yards receiving
- 23:17Speaker 3: forty two yards. He's passing, he had a two point conversion.
- 23:20Speaker 2: To you know, honestly, he kept them in the game.
- 23:22Speaker 2: If I'm not mistaken.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Anything in the game that day, he did. Man, he was.
- 23:26Speaker 3: He was sick earlier he has had like a stomach
- 23:28Speaker 3: bug or something, and then he just like you know,
- 23:31Speaker 3: hurled it and then got back out there and got
- 23:33Speaker 3: to work, you know, and Assue had to catch up
- 23:36Speaker 3: because they gave up a cheap punt return and a
- 23:38Speaker 3: one big play and then ASU turned it around. The
- 23:42Speaker 3: issue put five hundred and ten yards of offense on
- 23:46Speaker 3: that NFL type of Texas defense, so they they really
- 23:50Speaker 3: came to play. They really you know, punched Texas in
- 23:52Speaker 3: the mouth there and took them right to the to
- 23:54Speaker 3: the wire. You know, a couple of questionable calls could
- 23:57Speaker 3: have definitely changed that game. But just the formans of
- 24:00Speaker 3: Cam Scataboo that that when you look at that game
- 24:03Speaker 3: and watch that game, that's what you're going to get
- 24:05Speaker 3: in New York.
- 24:05Speaker 1: You know, when when he's out, I know he's got
- 24:07Speaker 1: a little bit of a hamstring injury here.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Probably injuries are a little weird right now with the Giants.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Maleak's a little hurt, he's a little you know what
- 24:14Speaker 2: it's it's it's still enough time to recover. But I
- 24:17Speaker 2: have to say this, Uh, I'm gonna tag you on
- 24:20Speaker 2: this because people where Giant fans have to take this
- 24:23Speaker 2: guy's protective, Kevin's protective. He's right there on the ground
- 24:26Speaker 2: in Arizona, reporting on on camp for us, and I'm
- 24:29Speaker 2: very appreciative about that. If I want to take the
- 24:31Speaker 2: other the other sideline, because you've also watched Texas right
- 24:34Speaker 2: and we all wondered why Archie Manning didn't really get
- 24:37Speaker 2: a snap. I'm very not Archie H.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Young Manning.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, isn't it Archie?
- 24:47Speaker 3: I think it is your arch Manning. Yeah, I think
- 24:49Speaker 3: he's got his Grandpa's name.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right. So it is about Arch
- 24:52Speaker 2: Manning on the other side line, we're all wondering where
- 24:55Speaker 2: that Manning is right and wondering when he's gonna get
- 24:57Speaker 2: in the game. Look, I loved what Quinn you weres
- 25:02Speaker 2: did for Texas. I thought he was very good for them.
- 25:04Speaker 2: But they could have gone to Manning a little more
- 25:07Speaker 2: down the stretch and they just did not, And it
- 25:10Speaker 2: was kind of frustrating because hey, we're all manning heights
- 25:12Speaker 2: up here, right, But also we want to see if
- 25:14Speaker 2: this kid is were drafting. I mean, I think the
- 25:16Speaker 2: Giants have their eyes on.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Him, yeah, oh oh for sure. And you've got a
- 25:20Speaker 1: good one with with Jackson Dart.
- 25:22Speaker 3: I mean, you've got a good young quarterback who's got
- 25:25Speaker 3: a lot of fire and spark there. So I think
- 25:27Speaker 3: the Giants quarterback room is in pretty good shape as
- 25:30Speaker 3: well as they're running back room. But yeah, it makes
- 25:33Speaker 3: you wonder, you know, I wondered that too, because it's like,
- 25:35Speaker 3: you got young Manning there, why, you know, why aren't
- 25:38Speaker 3: you giving him more playing time?
- 25:39Speaker 1: You know, especially on.
- 25:40Speaker 2: The goal line. I mean, they kept on the Quinn
- 25:42Speaker 2: and it's like, but Arch could run it right in
- 25:44Speaker 2: for you, you know, yeah.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Right right.
- 25:46Speaker 3: So we're going to get to see I mean, there's
- 25:48Speaker 3: gonna be a lot of pressure on this young man
- 25:50Speaker 3: because there's a lot of hype and that's a lot
- 25:52Speaker 3: to live up to. Hopefully his coaches, you know, will
- 25:55Speaker 3: have him, you know, not distracted from all that talk
- 25:58Speaker 3: and chatter and so he can just falls on the game,
- 26:01Speaker 3: you know, and play the game, you know, just ignore
- 26:04Speaker 3: all the all the talk and all the heisman and all.
- 26:06Speaker 2: The high It's funny because he was I believe either
- 26:08Speaker 2: Friday or he was not on the first day, but yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 2: he when you when you got driving on that Saturday,
- 26:14Speaker 2: he texted me, you're gonna want to watch this team.
- 26:16Speaker 2: I am now a Giant fan. I'm like, oh we
- 26:18Speaker 2: converted someone, look at that.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah, no, no, I'm on board, New York Giants.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I'm on board. I'm on board.
- 26:24Speaker 3: I'm gonna be watching every Giant game that I can
- 26:27Speaker 3: watch because I love this kid. Cam Scataboo. You guys
- 26:30Speaker 3: are gonna fall in love with this kid man because
- 26:32Speaker 3: he just doesn't quit. He is just uh, he's just
- 26:35Speaker 3: a beast and and he's got that X factor.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Alex.
- 26:38Speaker 3: You know, like some players are good, but they don't
- 26:40Speaker 3: have the X factor. Camp scat who has that X factor?
- 26:43Speaker 3: And I know that Kenny Dillingham, you know, he he.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Spent you know, he called the coach.
- 26:51Speaker 3: You know, he called the coach and the giants up
- 26:53Speaker 3: and he's and he said, uh, he said, you know what,
- 26:55Speaker 3: just let cam scattaboy do what he does because he's
- 26:58Speaker 3: gonna you know, he's going to influence that team. He's
- 27:01Speaker 3: going to fire everybody up. Everyone that's around him just
- 27:03Speaker 3: gets fired up. He just has that effect on the team,
- 27:07Speaker 3: you know. And once he's in there, once he gets
- 27:09Speaker 3: his time in there and he's he's healthy and feeling
- 27:12Speaker 3: good and stuff, you guys are in for a treat,
- 27:15Speaker 3: you know, because this kid, he's not the fastest. I mean,
- 27:18Speaker 3: he's got like a four to six five forty. But
- 27:21Speaker 3: I have never seen a running back, and I've seen
- 27:23Speaker 3: a lot of running backs over the years, and especially
- 27:26Speaker 3: at ASU and stuff, I've never seen a running back
- 27:28Speaker 3: that has the kind of balance that he has that
- 27:30Speaker 3: he can take these hits and just keep pushing forward
- 27:33Speaker 3: and you can't tackle him. He just keeps pushing forward.
- 27:36Speaker 3: He'll find a way. I mean, he's going to be
- 27:38Speaker 3: great for the Giants. The Giants running game is going
- 27:41Speaker 3: to be great, and I really sees good things happening
- 27:43Speaker 3: for New York him.
- 27:45Speaker 2: The back round is going to be electric. All right.
- 27:48Speaker 2: I got to give a shout out to your head coach,
- 27:49Speaker 2: because many probably know this. He gave a bonus to
- 27:52Speaker 2: everybody on his staff after they advance. How cool is that?
- 27:57Speaker 3: Kenny Dillingham is the coolest guy out. He's a young coach,
- 28:00Speaker 3: he's in They're probably the one of youngest coaches in
- 28:03Speaker 3: college football right now.
- 28:05Speaker 1: These kids love.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Him, you know, at a ISSU and and none of
- 28:10Speaker 3: them wanted to leave, you know, with the with the
- 28:12Speaker 3: nil and the portal and stuff.
- 28:14Speaker 1: They all wanted to stay.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Even the backup Sims, the quarterbackup quarterback Sims could start
- 28:18Speaker 3: anywhere he wants. He started at Nebraska, you know, he
- 28:21Speaker 3: he wanted to stay and back up Sam Levitt. You know,
- 28:24Speaker 3: Sam Levitt's going to be a high His name is
- 28:26Speaker 3: going to be throw thrown out there for Heisman as well.
- 28:29Speaker 1: You know, they they're load hues loaded at Town.
- 28:31Speaker 3: That's one of the things people don't understand is they're like, well, skamp.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Scatta who's gone. Now, No, you guys have no idea.
- 28:37Speaker 3: This A Issue team is going to be even better
- 28:39Speaker 3: than last year's A Issue team. They are three deep
- 28:42Speaker 3: everywhere they've they're just loaded.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Their defense is going to be one of the best
- 28:46Speaker 1: in the country.
- 28:47Speaker 3: They've pulled in some wide receivers from you know, from
- 28:51Speaker 3: Alabama and other places that they've upgraded that Sam Levit
- 28:54Speaker 3: is gonna have more targets to throw to other than
- 28:56Speaker 3: Jordan Tyson, who's a first team All American.
- 29:00Speaker 1: They're gonna make noise, you know. And people are kind
- 29:03Speaker 1: of you know, downplaying.
- 29:04Speaker 3: And not still sure about but A Issue, But I
- 29:07Speaker 3: promise you A Issue is going to be right there.
- 29:09Speaker 3: And I really expect to see them back in the
- 29:11Speaker 3: Big twelve championship this year. Who they're going to play
- 29:15Speaker 3: hard to say. There's so many good teams in the
- 29:17Speaker 3: Big twelve and it's and it's it's crazy, you know,
- 29:19Speaker 3: there's a lot of there's probably seven, eight nine teams
- 29:21Speaker 3: that could probably get there. But yeah, no, Dillingham has
- 29:26Speaker 3: just done an amazing job, you know, at A Issue
- 29:29Speaker 3: in such a short period of time.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Well, it's all with Kevin Miller and now with all
- 29:33Speaker 2: the sports knowledge, I got to say, you got to
- 29:35Speaker 2: write a sports book. Now, that's got to be in
- 29:37Speaker 2: your repertoire.
- 29:38Speaker 3: I think, yeah, well, you know what I exactly I'd
- 29:41Speaker 3: love to do that. I absolutely love to do that.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Loved I'd love to write Kenny Dillingham story. You know,
- 29:46Speaker 3: he's a guy that that like me. I mean, it's
- 29:50Speaker 3: like and I used to coach my brothers and I
- 29:52Speaker 3: used to go if we played football, and we coached
- 29:53Speaker 3: Pop Warner football together and won a lot, and we're
- 29:57Speaker 3: all crazed Arizona State Sun Devil fans. And that's who
- 30:01Speaker 3: Kenny Dillingham is. He's an alumni. He grew up, you know,
- 30:04Speaker 3: in the valley, so he's he's he to you know.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Him getting that job is like me getting that job.
- 30:10Speaker 3: That's how passionate he is. And he just turned He's
- 30:12Speaker 3: getting all kinds of offers and he just turns him down.
- 30:14Speaker 3: He's like, this is the job I want. This is
- 30:16Speaker 3: my dream job for real, this is where I want
- 30:19Speaker 3: to be. And he's so passionate about it, and that's
- 30:22Speaker 3: contagious to the players. All the players want to be there.
- 30:24Speaker 3: They love playing for him. These players love each other
- 30:27Speaker 3: and playing for each other. And that's what makes championships.
- 30:30Speaker 3: You know, when a team can play that, you can
- 30:32Speaker 3: have all the All stars and stuff you want him.
- 30:34Speaker 3: You got teams that have all these great players they
- 30:37Speaker 3: pulled in, but can they play together? Are they there
- 30:40Speaker 3: for the money or are they there for the love
- 30:42Speaker 3: of the game and the love of each other?
- 30:44Speaker 1: And Ahu has that right now.
- 30:46Speaker 3: They have that chemistry and that's why they're a dangerous team,
- 30:50Speaker 3: you know to play.
- 30:51Speaker 1: So I'm excited.
- 30:53Speaker 3: I'm very excited for the season and we'll see where
- 30:55Speaker 3: she goes and what they can accomplish this year.
- 30:58Speaker 1: But I'm a big fan out of Dillingham.
- 31:01Speaker 2: All right, Well, do you know we have a Hurley
- 31:02Speaker 2: up here in Yukonnor's one of a few rings already.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, but but the Hurley down in a she
- 31:09Speaker 2: was an equal. I mean, they're brothers. They're equally passionate
- 31:11Speaker 2: about the game, aren't they.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, without a doubt, definitely. Yeah. I mean that
- 31:17Speaker 1: that that.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Attitude just kind of you know, goes through all the
- 31:23Speaker 3: coaches and stuff. I mean, and I'm a I'm a
- 31:25Speaker 3: fan of Hurlees too, you know, and I think a
- 31:27Speaker 3: issue would do well to keep him on, you know,
- 31:30Speaker 3: and and because he's done, he's done some good stuff.
- 31:33Speaker 3: You know, A Issue is not a huge basketball school.
- 31:36Speaker 3: They never were, you know that that school down south
- 31:39Speaker 3: in Tucson that we remains unmentioned that you of a,
- 31:43Speaker 3: they're usually the basketball school.
- 31:45Speaker 1: But Issues had some great.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Seasons and I think, you know, Hurley needs to stick
- 31:49Speaker 3: around and and they need to pay him and keep
- 31:52Speaker 3: him going because I think he's going to do good
- 31:54Speaker 3: things and you know, he's already doing some some good
- 31:56Speaker 3: work in recruiting.
- 31:58Speaker 2: I'll never forget when you got beat us to Saint
- 32:01Speaker 2: John and I didn't go to Sain John. I love
- 32:03Speaker 2: Saint John's from them. You guys beat us in the
- 32:07Speaker 2: first four when Mullen was coach, and of course Mullen retired,
- 32:11Speaker 2: you know, left after that. But that was an impressive
- 32:15Speaker 2: showing for as you and I think that was the
- 32:17Speaker 2: real on the Matt moment.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, for sure, without a doubt. I mean, he
- 32:22Speaker 3: you know, Hurley's had some good years. You know, he's
- 32:24Speaker 3: had a couple of down years and stuff. But that's
- 32:26Speaker 3: that's that comes with coaching, you know, I mean, that
- 32:28Speaker 3: comes with the you know, you got to reload, and
- 32:31Speaker 3: we all know that everyone's got to reload. But yeah,
- 32:33Speaker 3: they've they've had some good years and they just need
- 32:35Speaker 3: to stick with the guy.
- 32:36Speaker 1: The guy's a great coach.
- 32:38Speaker 3: He knows basketball, and he motivates his players, and you
- 32:43Speaker 3: know he's.
- 32:44Speaker 1: I know that.
- 32:45Speaker 3: You know he shows up to the football games too,
- 32:47Speaker 3: and Dillingham shows up to the basketball games, and they
- 32:50Speaker 3: they just all support each other so well, so exciting
- 32:54Speaker 3: things happening.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Well on the field, off the field, and in the books.
- 32:58Speaker 2: It sounds like so very exciting stuff. And remind our
- 33:01Speaker 2: listeners one more time where you're going to be doing
- 33:03Speaker 2: the signing.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, let me let me pull that up real quick.
- 33:07Speaker 4: It's uh, let mean you just pull this up real quick,
- 33:13Speaker 4: and I'll give the exact address right off my website
- 33:17Speaker 4: and the information is on my website, author Kevinmiller dot com.
- 33:21Speaker 3: But it's the Desert Foothills Fest book signing. It's Saturday,
- 33:25Speaker 3: October eighteenth, from ten am to three pm. It's at
- 33:29Speaker 3: the Holland Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. So I'll be out
- 33:35Speaker 3: there with all the other authors and there's lots of
- 33:37Speaker 3: books and it's the perfect time of year to get
- 33:40Speaker 3: out there and you know, get some books for the holidays.
- 33:43Speaker 3: You know, they make great gifts.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Yeah, all in Arizona's got to be feel really nice
- 33:48Speaker 2: now that it's hot, right, Oh yeah, no.
- 33:51Speaker 1: It stays hot.
- 33:52Speaker 3: It stays hot until about Halloween, you know, and even
- 33:55Speaker 3: growing up here, man, it's warm through even through September
- 33:58Speaker 3: and October. But right on Halloween is when it's kind
- 34:01Speaker 3: of the switch flips and it gets a little cooler,
- 34:04Speaker 3: cooler at night, and then from that point on it's
- 34:07Speaker 3: it's cold. It gets real cold here, but it's a
- 34:09Speaker 3: beautiful time of year.
- 34:11Speaker 2: While we're on football, is this Kyler's make or break year?
- 34:15Speaker 2: I mean, do you follow Cardinals football as much? Or yeah?
- 34:18Speaker 1: No, I do. I do, And I don't know.
- 34:20Speaker 3: You know, it's just you know, there's a young man,
- 34:23Speaker 3: another Heisman winner from Oklahoma, you know that was so
- 34:26Speaker 3: full of promise coming to the Cardinals, and you know
- 34:29Speaker 3: they've had a lot of struggles, you know, and the
- 34:31Speaker 3: and his struggles aren't all his fault, you know, but
- 34:34Speaker 3: it's it's hard to say. I mean, I really am
- 34:36Speaker 3: just kind of confounded on what he's going to do.
- 34:40Speaker 3: You know, we're just kinda kind of got to wait
- 34:43Speaker 3: and see, you know. And and and I'm waiting for
- 34:46Speaker 3: Marvin Harrison to break out.
- 34:47Speaker 1: You know.
- 34:48Speaker 3: I mean, the young man is as talented as his
- 34:50Speaker 3: father was, but it's like, okay, man, but what point
- 34:53Speaker 3: or you know?
- 34:54Speaker 2: Well? And I think this generation of Nil kids is
- 34:57Speaker 2: a little different because now they're expecting the big pay
- 35:00Speaker 2: day and that just means we have more expectations than
- 35:04Speaker 2: the fans for them to perform. I mean, there's another.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Dot right right exactly, So a lot of pressure there.
- 35:10Speaker 1: So I hope.
- 35:11Speaker 3: So, I mean, I'm I like the Cardinals, you know,
- 35:13Speaker 3: I've liked him since they've been here and stuff, and
- 35:15Speaker 3: I've tried hard to be a fan, you know, and
- 35:18Speaker 3: and I am a fan, but but they've kind of,
- 35:21Speaker 3: you know, they kind of break our hearts sometimes, you know.
- 35:23Speaker 3: But but I'm definitely a Giants fan this year.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Man.
- 35:26Speaker 3: You know, I'm watching cam skataboo and we'll see where
- 35:30Speaker 3: that goes and stuff.
- 35:31Speaker 1: But uh, yeah, I wish the Cardinals, but I hope
- 35:33Speaker 1: they have a good season.
- 35:34Speaker 3: I hope Kyler can turn it around and and be
- 35:38Speaker 3: the quarterback that he, you know, has the potential to be,
- 35:41Speaker 3: you know, he's he's a talented young man.
- 35:43Speaker 2: It's like, well, they look strong in preseason, so we'll
- 35:46Speaker 2: have to see both teams did so, yeah, they.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Really do, they really do.
- 35:50Speaker 3: So I think it's going to be a good year
- 35:52Speaker 3: for football all around. And I am just chomping at
- 35:56Speaker 3: the bed on Saturdays to kick off or you know issues.
- 35:59Speaker 3: First game again the Northern Arizona University, which is not
- 36:02Speaker 3: a bad team. They they're you know, they're D two,
- 36:06Speaker 3: but they're ranked at D two and they won nine
- 36:08Speaker 3: games last year, so it won't be a cake walk,
- 36:10Speaker 3: but a issue should handle them pretty well. And then
- 36:13Speaker 3: they'll be off to Mississippi State, which you know they
- 36:16Speaker 3: should take that game too. But I imagine after this week,
- 36:20Speaker 3: I think Miami's going to lose, and I think ASU
- 36:22Speaker 3: will move up from eleventh and tenth and break the
- 36:25Speaker 3: top ten.
- 36:25Speaker 1: You know, it's just, you know, they just got to.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Well right, especially because their big year last year, so
- 36:31Speaker 2: it can happen again. Sure, Kevin, I really appreciate this.
- 36:35Speaker 2: And next episode we have you, they will do one
- 36:38Speaker 2: more promo about what's going on in October for people
- 36:41Speaker 2: to freshen their minds about I want to get into
- 36:44Speaker 2: your coaching style and how maybe you brought that coaching
- 36:47Speaker 2: into your writing as well. Is there a correlation?
- 36:50Speaker 3: Yeah, well, you know, probably so, I mean when I
- 36:54Speaker 3: think about it, because just our mindset, you know, my
- 36:57Speaker 3: brothers and I we kind of That's why I kind
- 36:59Speaker 3: of like Kenny Dillingham, because we kind of had that
- 37:01Speaker 3: same mindset. We we got the kids just so excited
- 37:04Speaker 3: to play that we.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Would have young young men play.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Above their talent, you know, just just having fun with them.
- 37:11Speaker 1: And you know, we would teach them.
- 37:13Speaker 3: Things sometimes by just like having fumble drills. We'd throw
- 37:16Speaker 3: the ball in the mud and let them them mothers
- 37:18Speaker 3: hated it, but the kids loved it and they're and
- 37:21Speaker 3: we never lost a fumble, and we would on side
- 37:24Speaker 3: kick a lot at that level, and we recover it
- 37:26Speaker 3: quite a bit because they knew how to recover a fumble,
- 37:28Speaker 3: you know, and just and they were having fun so
- 37:30Speaker 3: much fun, they didn't realize they were learning something, you know,
- 37:33Speaker 3: because we had fun just kind of playing through them living.
- 37:37Speaker 2: My favorite my favorite thing in football is not so
- 37:40Speaker 2: much the mud, but in the snow. That's when I
- 37:41Speaker 2: love to play.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you guys got the snow
- 37:44Speaker 1: back there.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Yeah, my dad and I used to play in the
- 37:48Speaker 2: courtyard of NYU where I went to pre k although
- 37:51Speaker 2: I was, you know, in my teens, and we'd play
- 37:54Speaker 2: when there was snow and it was one of my
- 37:56Speaker 2: favorite things. So I can't imagine excited the kids get
- 38:00Speaker 2: roll around trying to get that ball. It's it's got
- 38:01Speaker 2: to be fun to watch.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Oh no, it's so much fun. And what's really rewarding.
- 38:06Speaker 1: I know our years of Pop Warner coach and was
- 38:09Speaker 1: when we have that.
- 38:10Speaker 3: Kid, you know, that shy kid that kind of you know,
- 38:13Speaker 3: it is kind of a little fraid to contact and stuff.
- 38:15Speaker 1: And you just work with them and work and you
- 38:17Speaker 1: see him progress.
- 38:18Speaker 3: And and you know, I had one kid, his name
- 38:20Speaker 3: was Matt Gaalbert Man, and I worked at it because
- 38:23Speaker 3: I played wide receiver in defensive back, so I was
- 38:26Speaker 3: working with him at defensive back. And by the end
- 38:28Speaker 3: of the year he had like six interceptions. And the
- 38:31Speaker 3: kid went on to play high school football, which he probably.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Wouldn't have, you know, And and he was he was good.
- 38:38Speaker 3: And and and one father came up when with his
- 38:40Speaker 3: little boy, he was struggling in school, and.
- 38:42Speaker 1: He says he goes.
- 38:43Speaker 3: You know what, I got to give you guys credit
- 38:45Speaker 3: because his confidence is so high right now that all
- 38:49Speaker 3: he's pulled all his grades up. They were going to
- 38:51Speaker 3: put him in special classes and now he's got good grades,
- 38:53Speaker 3: and that just touches my heart. That's what coaching is
- 38:57Speaker 3: all about, you know, is just seeing young young men
- 39:01Speaker 3: and our young women, you know, just rise above themselves
- 39:05Speaker 3: and be successful and find that confidence in themselves. You know,
- 39:10Speaker 3: That's that's what we try to instill.
- 39:11Speaker 2: And when you do there in your conference, Oklahoma softball
- 39:14Speaker 2: is really amazing, by the way, and you're you know,
- 39:17Speaker 2: Oklahoma softball is fun to watch, so I'm glad to
- 39:20Speaker 2: get the women too. Hey. Yeah, No, let's have a
- 39:25Speaker 2: bigger conversation on this because we can. I always think
- 39:28Speaker 2: a fall and I always listen to a Bob Wolfe's
- 39:31Speaker 2: son Rick Rick Wolf when you used to do a
- 39:33Speaker 2: show on w f A N about youth sports. And
- 39:36Speaker 2: we don't have that conversation anymore, a because unfortunately Rick
- 39:40Speaker 2: Wolf passed. But b no one wants to talk about
- 39:42Speaker 2: how we can invigorate the youth sports incentives, about how
- 39:46Speaker 2: bad it is, how the coaches are, or how the
- 39:48Speaker 2: umpires and reps don't want to play do it anymore?
- 39:51Speaker 2: We can vitalize it just through these conversations of yes,
- 39:54Speaker 2: sports is healthy for the kid, and they have to
- 39:55Speaker 2: be allowed to play it.
- 39:57Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's such a vital it's such a to
- 39:59Speaker 3: me as such a vital uh, you know, the aspect
- 40:04Speaker 3: to to development, you know, to develop in our young
- 40:06Speaker 3: people the sports, you know, sports sports, sports is just
- 40:10Speaker 3: a metaphor for life, you know. And they learned so much,
- 40:13Speaker 3: you know, being part of a team, you know, and
- 40:16Speaker 3: how to how to interact, you know, and have a hed,
- 40:18Speaker 3: have each other's back, you know, how to overcome adversity.
- 40:22Speaker 3: You know, there's every lesson in life can be learned
- 40:25Speaker 3: through sports, you know.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Yeah, so I think it's how much And life is
- 40:31Speaker 2: so much bigger than baseball and jazz chism is one
- 40:33Speaker 2: hundredth career homer. What do you do on the bench?
- 40:35Speaker 2: He hugged all of his very emotional moment, because you're
- 40:39Speaker 2: a guy like many others, whose life is bigger than baseball,
- 40:42Speaker 2: and yet here he is thriving at the game he loves.
- 40:45Speaker 2: It's just it's so cool to see these stories unfolding
- 40:48Speaker 2: right here. In New York and now with Scataboo, we're
- 40:50Speaker 2: going to see how it correlates. And you know, this
- 40:53Speaker 2: NFL is not an easy transition, neither of the NBA. Nope,
- 40:57Speaker 2: I remember tell I'll tell the story till till the
- 41:00Speaker 2: day I can't. Tyler Hansborough stand out UNC ends up
- 41:05Speaker 2: packing groceries. Yeah, ends up packing groceries because he couldn't
- 41:12Speaker 2: make it the NBA. It's just funny how these things
- 41:13Speaker 2: end up.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it is.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Camp Scattaboo was a zero star recruit out of high school.
- 41:19Speaker 3: Nobody who recruited him. Sacramento State finally gave him an
- 41:22Speaker 3: offer and he played there for a year before he
- 41:25Speaker 3: transferred to ASU, before Kenny Dillingham discovered him and convinced
- 41:29Speaker 3: him to come to ASU.
- 41:30Speaker 1: He's been disrespected his whole life. That's that's part of
- 41:33Speaker 1: what motivates.
- 41:33Speaker 3: That young man is he's constantly proving he's That's why
- 41:36Speaker 3: he made the statement before Texas saying I'm the best
- 41:39Speaker 3: running back in the country, and it's like, wow, man,
- 41:41Speaker 3: you're really throwing the galllet down the Texas a defense,
- 41:43Speaker 3: But he went out there and proved it. You know,
- 41:45Speaker 3: he went out there and proved it on the field,
- 41:49Speaker 3: you know. But uh yeah, I mean it's it's and
- 41:51Speaker 3: that there's a guy who you would think wouldn't make it,
- 41:54Speaker 3: but there he is. He's a New York giant, you know,
- 41:57Speaker 3: so works.
- 42:00Speaker 2: I love the first impression he made that you know,
- 42:04Speaker 2: kind of hype video and whatnot of him coming to
- 42:07Speaker 2: New York. So gotta love his energy already. All right, Kevin,
- 42:10Speaker 2: we're gonna follow you back. You know, We're gonna promote
- 42:12Speaker 2: your Instagram, your x account, your everything, because you deserve
- 42:17Speaker 2: to be shouted out, so we're gonna do that. Also,
- 42:19Speaker 2: thanks for having writers have One Leg Up on life
- 42:22Speaker 2: for sure.
- 42:23Speaker 3: Absolutely, man, I appreciated, Alex, I really do.
- 42:26Speaker 2: Man.
- 42:26Speaker 3: It's good great talking to you again. It's been too long.
- 42:29Speaker 3: We need to do this a little more often.
- 42:30Speaker 2: Well, now I know that you were a coach, we
- 42:32Speaker 2: got to do some breakdowns and stuff as the weeks
- 42:34Speaker 2: go on. I'd love to do that.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Absolutely, yep, absolutely, we'd love it.
- 42:37Speaker 2: That's Keller on One Leg Up Network. I'm Alex Carrett.
