- 0:00Speaker 1: As we've heard, CLP President Lawson Broad has quit the
- 0:03Speaker 1: party over the party's decision to oppose an Aboriginal and
- 0:07Speaker 1: torres straight Islander voice to Parliament. Now, mister Broad told
- 0:11Speaker 1: sky News that he had resigned from his position and
- 0:15Speaker 1: well given up his COLP membership after the party passed
- 0:19Speaker 1: a resolution last month to oppose the Voice. Joining me
- 0:22Speaker 1: on the line is the person who broke this story,
- 0:25Speaker 1: Matt Cunningham from Sky News. Good morning to you, Matt,
- 0:29Speaker 1: gooday will be How are you not too bad? Matt?
- 0:32Speaker 1: Tell us what exactly has happened here?
- 0:37Speaker 2: Well, we know the last month the COLP passed that
- 0:41Speaker 2: resolution to formally oppose the Voice to Parliament. In fact,
- 0:45Speaker 2: there were several branches that put forward motions saying that
- 0:49Speaker 2: the CLB should oppose the voice, and they did pass
- 0:53Speaker 2: that resolution at Central Council. Monk Now, as a consequence
- 0:57Speaker 2: of that, All abroad has told me that he has
- 1:02Speaker 2: resigned from not only his position as President of the COLP,
- 1:07Speaker 2: but he's resigned from the party all together.
- 1:11Speaker 3: It says that he can't reconcile that position that was
- 1:15Speaker 3: passed by the parliament by the COLP at the Central
- 1:20Speaker 3: Parliament at Central.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Council meeting, sorry O Katie last month with his own
- 1:26Speaker 2: personal views. He says in that statement his personal views
- 1:30Speaker 2: that these positions passed bay the c P last month
- 1:33Speaker 2: are offensive to a large number of Aboriginal people in
- 1:35Speaker 2: the Northern Territory and the population more generally. They seek
- 1:38Speaker 2: to undermine decades of successive and evolving efforts on both
- 1:42Speaker 2: sides of politics to empower Aboriginal people and communities through
- 1:46Speaker 2: recognition of language, culture and law. By their nature, they
- 1:49Speaker 2: have the potential to furthering trench Aboriginal disadvantage and they
- 1:53Speaker 2: create opportunity to be interpreted as racist.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Well so, Matt, I mean, is this really going to
- 2:01Speaker 1: send the party into a state of disarray or what's
- 2:03Speaker 1: it going to mean for the CLP from your perspective,
- 2:06Speaker 1: we are I mean, we're just days out from a
- 2:08Speaker 1: by election. Let's not forget for our referra.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, the time is not great. You'd have to say,
- 2:14Speaker 2: look to see the CLP is being divided over this issue, Katie.
- 2:18Speaker 2: You know, even after that resolution was passed last month,
- 2:22Speaker 2: the CLP leader here in the nt Leaf and Achiaro
- 2:26Speaker 2: and other members of the parliamentary wing were saying that
- 2:30Speaker 2: they were still supporting the Voice. They say they want
- 2:32Speaker 2: more details on this issue. I think it is it
- 2:36Speaker 2: is giving a bit of a gift to the Labor
- 2:39Speaker 2: Party though, I mean, you talk about that are if
- 2:41Speaker 2: you're a by election been five days away, I think
- 2:44Speaker 2: you can debt. You know, we don't have build a
- 2:46Speaker 2: landhouse a strong supporter of the Voice to Parliament, and
- 2:49Speaker 2: I'm sure that the Labor Party will have its offer.
- 2:52Speaker 2: It is out in the bush on the TeV Island
- 2:55Speaker 2: and in Manning Greta using this issue to push its
- 2:59Speaker 2: case against the COLP. I've spoken to other people within
- 3:02Speaker 2: the CLP who've had concerns that it could be a
- 3:07Speaker 2: costly issue for them or a difficult issue, and seeks
- 3:09Speaker 2: like Mamatura and Barclays family hold by a handful of votes.
- 3:14Speaker 2: So you know, whatever your position on the Voice, I
- 3:18Speaker 2: think it's pretty clear the CLP got itself into a
- 3:22Speaker 2: bit of a mess of the tone making on this issue.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Matt, we did just ask the Chief ministeron Natasha Files
- 3:27Speaker 1: about this situation. She says that leofan Occhiaro's position is untenable.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I guess you'd expect her to say that given that
- 3:35Speaker 1: it is the opposition. But it's certainly an interesting situation
- 3:41Speaker 1: that the opposition leader Leof and Ochiro now finds herself in.
- 3:46Speaker 2: It is and I'm sure it's a position she'd rather
- 3:49Speaker 2: not be in the first way. And there's a bit
- 3:52Speaker 2: it is going on in the Federal Parliament as well.
- 3:56Speaker 2: You know, the Nationals have taken a position opposing the voice.
- 4:00Speaker 2: The Liberal Party and the Opposition leader Peter Dutton are
- 4:03Speaker 2: still taking the same position that Leschiaro is taking at
- 4:06Speaker 2: the moment, which is to say that look, we're not
- 4:08Speaker 2: opposed to this necessarily, but we won't be more detail,
- 4:11Speaker 2: but it's clear that there are divisions within the Conservative
- 4:17Speaker 2: side of politics over this issue. Yeah, I was interesting.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Natasha pav said a similar thing at a press conference
- 4:24Speaker 2: she held this morning. Katie, if he actually certainly gets
- 4:28Speaker 2: an extra spring in a step when you gets a
- 4:30Speaker 2: chance across at the CLP Loo, Look, is it going
- 4:36Speaker 2: to have an impact in the ARA if you're a
- 4:37Speaker 2: by election. I don't know, but the timing is not
- 4:40Speaker 2: great today. It's going to be an interesting by election
- 4:43Speaker 2: this weekend. There's some pretty interesting comments from Ralph garrettson
- 4:47Speaker 2: you in the nteen years this morning as well about
- 4:49Speaker 2: that by election, and he's saying later it would be
- 4:52Speaker 2: in a bit of trouble. Is he's saying that there'll
- 4:54Speaker 2: be a record load turnout at this by election because
- 4:57Speaker 2: of both the weather and the fact that it's a
- 4:59Speaker 2: bio election. Well, it's going to be an interesting one
- 5:02Speaker 2: to watch. There's a lot of stake for both leaders.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I think I think both Patasha files Alys and Offiro
- 5:06Speaker 2: won't have a very a very fun Monday if they
- 5:11Speaker 2: lose that by election on the weekend.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you're spot on, and we are going
- 5:15Speaker 1: to catch up with Professor Rolph Gerretts and this morning
- 5:18Speaker 1: just after ten o'clock and speak a little bit more
- 5:20Speaker 1: about that. I think what will also be interesting is
- 5:22Speaker 1: my understanding is that Mann and Greta often well, I
- 5:25Speaker 1: believe at the last but the last election had quite
- 5:28Speaker 1: a low voter turnout, and that is of course where
- 5:31Speaker 1: the ALP's candidate is from. Not one hundred percent sure
- 5:35Speaker 1: you know in terms of the CLP, whether they're expecting
- 5:38Speaker 1: a high voter turnout then on the Tiwei Islands or
- 5:40Speaker 1: exactly what's going to go on. But Matt, it's always
- 5:43Speaker 1: a bit hard to tell. Isn't it when you talk
- 5:45Speaker 1: about those Bush seats.
- 5:48Speaker 2: It certainly is I any other issue though with laph
- 5:52Speaker 2: and Broad's resignation, I think Katie is the other interesting factor.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I mean, you go back to twenty twelve when there
- 5:59Speaker 2: was the Bush revolved against the Labor Party and picked
- 6:03Speaker 2: up all of those Bush seats, including Arrafura. You know,
- 6:07Speaker 2: one of the key architects of that wing was Lawson Board.
- 6:09Speaker 2: You know, he has a song relationship with Aboriginal people
- 6:12Speaker 2: in the Bush. He's very close to yingy of Yueler
- 6:15Speaker 2: as well and helped run that campaign by yinge of
- 6:19Speaker 2: Euler and Ian Gumblow who almost won the seat of
- 6:22Speaker 2: Arnhem from Labor at the last election. So you know,
- 6:25Speaker 2: they probably lose a key strategist when it comes to
- 6:29Speaker 2: Bush with Lawson Board resigning from the party. I mean
- 6:35Speaker 2: a difficult thing to work out sometimes how people in
- 6:38Speaker 2: the Bush vote and what causes them to vote one
- 6:41Speaker 2: way or an up or another. But laws have certainly
- 6:43Speaker 2: someone who I think has had the ability over a
- 6:47Speaker 2: long time to really know how to campaign in the Bush.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Matt any idea who is now going to step in
- 6:54Speaker 1: in that president's role? Do we have any idea at
- 6:57Speaker 1: this point, I couldn't tell.
- 7:00Speaker 2: You, to be honest, Katie. That's the matter that the
- 7:04Speaker 2: CLP is going to have to deal with now. I
- 7:06Speaker 2: haven't had any discussion with anyone about who the new
- 7:09Speaker 2: president might be, but obviously on the lookout for one. Now.
- 7:13Speaker 1: It is very interesting times. And you know, just when
- 7:15Speaker 1: you sort of think that the CLP is on their
- 7:18Speaker 1: road to recovery after what had been tumultuous few years
- 7:21Speaker 1: for them, you know there's another own goal.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah, a bit of a challenge ahead of them now,
- 7:28Speaker 2: no doubt, Katie. An interesting timing as well. So all
- 7:31Speaker 2: eyes on Saturday in this violence.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I reckon. So it'll be.
- 7:37Speaker 2: They taking the right the wrong one.
- 7:41Speaker 1: It'll be interesting times, indeed, Matt Cunningham, always good to
- 7:45Speaker 1: catch up with you, mate, Thanks so much for your
- 7:46Speaker 1: time this morning. Thank you.
