- 1:14Well, it's time for another adventure with the greatest of all manhunters.
- 1:19We have thirteen lost episodes between last week's episodes and this week's, so quite
- 1:25a few. The original air date on this one is December twenty second,
- 1:30nineteen forty six, and the title is the Case of the Imitation Robbery.
- 1:36And I'll warn you in advance there are a few skips. You don't miss
- 1:40any plot, but there's really a bad clipped ending at the end of the
- 1:47episode. But with that said, let's go ahead and take a listen.
- 1:56Every week at this time, two great names are joined. All Dutch Cleanser
- 2:00brings you one of the most resourceful and daring characters in all detective fiction,
- 2:06Nick Carter, Master Detective, ending that imitation diamond in the crook's pocket is
- 2:15certainly proof that he was in on the robbery. Certainly would be, Patsy
- 2:19if I had found it there. But you must have. I saw you
- 2:22take it out of his pocket. You did. I was trying to start
- 2:24something. Oh, I don't understand you at all in this case. Nick,
- 2:28You're doing the craziest things and not getting anywhere. Ah, that's where
- 2:31you're wrong, Patsy. I expect to catch the robbers before I go to
- 2:35bed tonight. And that's a promise. Now, the case of the Imitation
- 2:44Robbery, Today's exciting adventure with Nick Carter, brought to you by All Dutch
- 2:49Cleanser. As our story opens, Nick and Patsy are in the jewelry shop
- 2:53off Nelson Stroud talking to the proprietor. It was late fall and there's a
- 2:58hint of snow in the afternoon air that Uiller's protective Association tells me. You
- 3:01reported that you're being systematically robbed, Missus Stroud. It must have been going
- 3:06on for weeks, mister Cutter. So many of my best unset stones have
- 3:09been stolen. And it wasn't from hold ups, mister Stroud hould ups.
- 3:13No, it a lot slicker than that, you see. It's like this
- 3:16day before, yesterday Saturday, I happened to see an imitation diamond in the
- 3:20tree with a dozen or so real diamonds. So I became suspicious. You
- 3:23say you just happened to spot the corny stone. Yes, So yesterday Sunday
- 3:28I came down to the store and checked through all the trays and I found
- 3:31twenty nine paste stones mixed in with the real ones. Ah, how much
- 3:36for the twenty nine diamonds that are missing be worth? Missus Stroud had a
- 3:38rough estimate in the neighborhood of sixty five thousand dollars. And you think somebody
- 3:44brought twenty nine imitation gems in here and walked out with twenty nine real ones.
- 3:47I know it. How it could happened. None of your clerks spotted
- 3:50the fakes. These fake stones are too good, mister Cutter. That's the
- 3:53trouble. Here. Look at this one I make that looks genuine to me.
- 4:00Yes, his an excellent job, I must admit. Close inspection would
- 4:03have course revealed them at once. But about all the clerks do as a
- 4:06rule is to run their eye rapidly over the tray after serving a customer and
- 4:11check the number of stones before putting them away. But do you have any
- 4:15ideas how this substitution might have taken place? I don't think I know.
- 4:19Some crook or gang of crooks has come in here time at the time asking
- 4:23to see our unset stones and palm the real ones, leaving the fakes in
- 4:27the tray. But that would have taken weeks, mister started. Couldn't be
- 4:30done too often, and even then the criminal would be taking a long chance
- 4:32of not being recognized. But it must have been done that way, or
- 4:35not necessarily. Now it looks to me is if the crook or crooks had
- 4:42inside helping this non And so all three of my clerks, the fine men
- 4:45with good references, that remains to be seen. Show me what you have
- 4:49here in the store in the way of burglar alarms. Of course, you
- 4:53see there are counters on each of the three sides of the store. Each
- 4:56counter has an alarm buzzer under it, operated by pressing a button with your
- 5:00foot. Then the vault where the unset stones are kept has a special alarm
- 5:03on it. Well, how is that operated, missus Stroud? Well,
- 5:06if the dial that works the combinations turned back to ten first, it automatically
- 5:11rings an alarm. They're all connected direct the police headquarters and the Protective Association.
- 5:15The unset diamonds are kept in that ford. Yes, he'll show you
- 5:26there. You see, this vault is filled with little trays only about an
- 5:30inch high. Each tray is numbered to identify the different grades of stone.
- 5:33Oh, going, there must be a hundred trees in there. That's the
- 5:39pown, Misus Stroud. I think I have a plan that'll test the reaction
- 5:43of your clerks. More afternon's you'd be a good time. I'll let you
- 5:46know definitely the exact hour, because i'll need your cooperation. Of course,
- 5:50mister Cutter, what are you planning to do a little unconventional? But it's
- 5:56been done before. Now here's the plan About four o'clock. I'll send this
- 6:00though, and Nick says he's ready for the test. So would you please
- 6:14disconnect the burglar alarm system. You're sure this is necessary, miss Born.
- 6:18You're interested in having these fats stopped as soon as you can, aren't you?
- 6:23Of course, very well. I will make the necessary arrangements. How
- 6:28long before Misscott will be here? From what he said, he should be
- 6:30along any minute now. Something I can do for you, sir, Oh
- 6:46God, put your hands on the connor, all three of you, and
- 6:49keeping there. But this is a stick up, oh monkey business. Hands
- 6:55on the connor. Are you with the black hair? And quick? That's
- 6:58better? Nah? You too? Get her on the other side of the
- 7:01store with goldilocks. Shut up, Go and keep your trap shut all right,
- 7:09you are the guys. Get about Goldie, I said, and walk
- 7:13slow and nobody looking in will think there's anything wrong. Okay, noah,
- 7:21you bally me. Yeah, you open up that vault. I can't.
- 7:28I don't know the combination. Open up vault, I said the last time.
- 7:30When you open up? All right? All right? Yeah? All
- 7:40out all those trays so I can get at him. Wait a minute,
- 7:47Balie, don't be picking up just a tray with the cheap stones. I
- 7:49want them all all right, Okay, that's enough. You can put them
- 7:57back now, all must shroud well, miss Cutter, I hope you learned
- 8:03something. Yes, all three of your clerks passed with high marks. Missus
- 8:05Stroud. Baldy here turned the vault dial the wrong way, which had set
- 8:09off the alarm. The other two stepped on their alarm buzzers. I watched
- 8:11their feet. Then if the alarm has been connected, there would have been
- 8:15three separate alarms lung and a headquarter. Is Nick right? Passy? Oh?
- 8:18By the way, mister Stroud, you better connect the alarm system again
- 8:20dust in case, mister Seahan, what's been going on here? I don't
- 8:24get it. So this is mister Nick Carter, the Jeweler's protective Association.
- 8:26He just wanted to be sure you boys were on your toes in case of
- 8:30real trouble. You threw now, Miss Carter all through. Thanks, Then
- 8:33let's get back to my office. You can put the trays back. Boys.
- 8:39It all seems very silly to me, mister Cutter. Did you really
- 8:43learn anything from that little stunt? I did. Who's the young fellow with
- 8:48the blond hair. That's my nephew, Bill Evlin. And the middle aged
- 8:50man with a bald head, and let's uhor Ryan been here for six years,
- 8:54don good clerk, And who's the good looking chap with the black hair
- 8:58slicked down? So neatly check the name of Robert Hill. He's new here,
- 9:01but as far as I know, he's absolutely okay. I called the
- 9:05firm he's been with and they gave him excellent references. Maybe so, but
- 9:09he instinctively reached for a gun and a shoulder hoster when I first drew my
- 9:13guns. Nothing against him yet, of course, but I'd keep an eye
- 9:16on him. Onybe hed they having a job or he needed protection, make
- 9:20entirely possible, Patsy, I wouldn't want to say until I knew more about
- 9:22him. You said yesterday you thought this was an inside job. Must cut
- 9:26her. Well, I think now that you're wrong. What do you mean
- 9:33now? I'll show you here. I found this under the silverware account of
- 9:41this morning. That's so wow. Why is it? Nick? What a
- 9:46chewing gum, Patsy. And there's a diamond inside it. I'm in a
- 9:52hunk of chewing gum. Yes, it's an old game. Cook comes in
- 9:56palms an unset stone when the clerk's not looking, sticks to stone for the
- 9:58unders side of the counter. In the chewing gum. Then a few days
- 10:03later he comes in and scrapes the gum off and walks out. That way,
- 10:05if the stones missed when he steals it, he can submit to a
- 10:07search and there's nothing on him. And I bet that's how all twenty nine
- 10:11of my stones disappeared. It's possible, Missus Stroud, but I doubt it.
- 10:15I still think it's an inside job. And I'll tell you what rumble
- 10:20Max, Uncle Max, you said to let you know if anybody had seen
- 10:24before came in to look at unset stone. That's right, idea. Why
- 10:26well, there's a man out there now who's been in at least twice before.
- 10:31Ryan's waiting on him. Anyway, you can get a look at him
- 10:33from in here. That's Drout. Yes, I have a secret panel here
- 10:35that lets me watch the store without being seen. All right here? You
- 10:43mean that tall, thin man in the brown suits devil him? Yeah,
- 10:46yuh, that's a one I think, mister Strout. I'll have a talk
- 10:50with that gentleman. I'll be careful, Mistercutter. I don't want a lawsuit
- 10:54on my hand. Well, Morgan to sit in diamonds, Nick Carter,
- 11:03mind stepping into the office a minute, Morgan, like to have a word
- 11:05with you. W you mind your own business, Carter on mine in mind,
- 11:09like to help you mind yours. It won't take but a minute,
- 11:13and I think you better do as I suggest. Okay, cover there's any
- 11:20funny business. I'm telling David Morgan right in here. I don't know what
- 11:24right you've got to drag me in here like this. A lot of diamonds
- 11:28have been taken out of this store lately without being paid for. You've been
- 11:31in here several times to look at unstepped stones. So I just want to
- 11:35see if any of those stones have stucked your fingers. Wouldn't be the first
- 11:39time. Well, you cheat, We simply can't. We can in this
- 11:43case, Morgan's long record at headquarters makes me very suspicious. All right,
- 11:48stand still, Morgan. Well, I see what you're having your pocket.
- 11:52I'll sue you for this. I'll sue the store too. See if I
- 11:54a what's this huh here in your vest part? So he is I never
- 12:03saw that before? I swear, Well, you confess to him that before.
- 12:07Look there's something wrong. I tell you, yes, something is.
- 12:11Let me see that stone. Hmm, certainly here you are. I thought,
- 12:15so it's a fake. Sure, of course, I'm sure, and
- 12:18I still say I never saw that thing before. But it don't make no
- 12:22difference. Now. See, you can't arrest a man for him with an
- 12:24imitation diamond in his pocket. Oh, Margan, you're quite right, you
- 12:28can. You can go now. I'm going fast enough, but I ain't
- 12:31through with this. I'm gonna sue this poor You'll hear from my lawyer later.
- 12:37But you can't let him go like this genuine imitation. He's at the
- 12:39bottom of this. Yes, I think you're right, Missus Stroud. So
- 12:43why did you let him go? Here? Finding that imitation diamond in his
- 12:46pocket is proof, isn't it? Well, yes, it would be if
- 12:48i'd found it there. What I mean you didn't. No, I put
- 12:52it there and I pretended to find it the fake stone, Missus Stroud showed
- 12:56me yesterday. I hope you know what you're doing, mister Cotter, this
- 12:58is all great to me. Yes, Nick, What in Heaven's name are
- 13:01you doing? Playing games? Why? Patsy, you know me better than
- 13:05that. By the way, mister Stroud, didn't you tell me none of
- 13:09your clerks knew of these debts? That's right? I left the fake stones
- 13:13in the trees where I found them. And if you were so sure this
- 13:15wasn't an inside job, why didn't you want the clerks to know about the
- 13:18laws? Well, you see, well, it was really only when I
- 13:22found that wad of chewing gum under the counter that I finally decided it was
- 13:26an outside job. I see, well that, Kate. I believe I'll
- 13:31search your clerks before they go home tonight. What may turn up something?
- 13:37What time your clothes five thirty, five thirty hours or five o'clock now?
- 13:41Rather so, I guess I'll wait if you don't mind. I don't like
- 13:45it, but I guess you'll do it anyway. Go ahead, wait if
- 13:46you want to better, take your overcoat off and that's pretty warm in year,
- 13:52Thanks Patsy. I'll do that. Might as well be comfortable as I
- 13:54can while we're waiting. I ought to be throwing the store by now.
- 14:09I told them to come in here when they were ready to go home.
- 14:11I can wait. I you still say this is the craziest way to find
- 14:15out, No, I did, gentlemen. A number of on set diamonds
- 14:20have been stolen from the store recently. The crowd says, you're all okay,
- 14:22but that's as matter of routine. I'd like to search each of you
- 14:26before you leave tonight. Any objections, all right, Devlin, I'll take
- 14:30you first. You're clean, now, you hill nothing on you? All
- 14:39right? Ryan? Your neck right? You can go now, thank you?
- 14:48All right? Nick, was the least exhibition ever seen. You give
- 14:54why those men could have a dozen stones concealed neck cloth? He never have
- 14:58found them? The girl right, that was no such at all, And
- 15:01you didn't really think one of them would be fool enough to try to walk
- 15:03out of here tonight of all nights, with a diamond hidden on him.
- 15:07Perhaps I was looking for something else, something else. Did you find it?
- 15:11I won't know the later, Patsy. I'll go and see that everything
- 15:18locked up for the night, if you'll excuse me. I got the names
- 15:24and addresses of those clerks before I go. Oh, where did I put
- 15:28my pencil? Had it earlier this afternoon? In your overcoat pockets? Now?
- 15:33Maybe I have a look anyway, Well, Nick, you're looking in
- 15:37the wrong coat. That's Missus Stroud's coat. Yeah, so I've just discovered
- 15:45and look here diamonds too, beautiful diamonds yes, and these aren't ponies,
- 15:54they're the real things. Coat, yes, Betsy too, genuine unset diamonds
- 16:00and Missus Droud's overcoat pocket. Now back to the case of the imitation robbery,
- 16:18to day's exciting adventure with Nick Carter, brought to you by all Dutch
- 16:23cleanser. It's a few minutes after Nick found the two real diamonds in the
- 16:27overcoat pockets mister Stroud the jeweler, and Stroud has just returned to his office
- 16:32and is locking up the store for the night. Anything else, mister cut
- 16:36him? Hey, f yes, just one more thing, Missus Stroud.
- 16:38Will you give me the addresses of your three clerks here? They are on
- 16:41that phone list? Oh yes, copy them down for me, will you,
- 16:44Patsy? And will you let me look in your vault once more before
- 16:47we go? Missus Stroud? I you suppose so, but I'd like to
- 16:49get home sometime to night. You would like to stop the robberies too,
- 16:53wouldn't you? Naturally? I think where you are going at it? I
- 16:57can't see you are now what I'm going to pull out certain of these drawers
- 17:03if on set stones? Yes, this, these two, this and these
- 17:10do now missus Stroud, will you tell me please whether or not there are
- 17:15any phony stones and any of the drawers I have not pulled out? Let
- 17:18me see. I know you've pulled out every tray that has a fake stone
- 17:22in it. How did you know? I have a good memory, Missus
- 17:26Stroud. You can close the vault now ready to go? Nick, Yes,
- 17:30Passy all said, how could you tell which trees had the phonies in
- 17:33the mister Catter? Those seven trays are the ones Ryan pulled out first when
- 17:37I pretended to rob the plate, and that shows he's a good man.
- 17:40Wanted to get rid of the bad stones and keep the good ones if you
- 17:41could. That's really clever. Now look, I don't want to hurry you,
- 17:45mister Carter, but I'd like to get my dinner. If you need
- 17:48me, you can reach me at Deal's restaurant. I eat there every night.
- 17:52That is, unless you'd care to join me. No thanks, Missus
- 17:55Stroud. I have something else to do right now. I'm on Passy all
- 17:57right with you? Nick? After you, Mamzelle, Oh mercy, monsieur
- 18:04expect any results in the near future, mister cut Her, I do the
- 18:07very near future, I hope, so well, good night, good night.
- 18:14Get in touch with me when you have anything. Definitely, good night.
- 18:18It certainly doesn't sound very optimistic me and I can't say I blame him
- 18:23much. The way you've been acting today, it isn't like unique. This
- 18:29case isn't like any other either, Patsy. It's always a good idea to
- 18:32fit your methods to what you're trying to do. Well, good night,
- 18:34I'll see you in the morning. You're not going back to the office,
- 18:38No, indeed, I expect to finish up this case this evening. I
- 18:42have something else I want to do tomorrow. There's a bucket of mine.
- 19:02He's the darkest hole. She just put a dog on light switch at you,
- 19:07Morgan. She gave me a scare. For a minute, I thought
- 19:11you were a cop. Oh you're getting scared at last day. Yeah,
- 19:15it's about time and trying to tell you we can't keep this up forever.
- 19:19But no, you knew it all. Now. Look where we are you
- 19:23doing here? Why did you come here to my apartment? I came here
- 19:26from my share eyes. I'm through washed up after what happened and strouded off
- 19:33of the day. I ain't sticked. Did happen that copper. Nick Carter
- 19:37searched me, still what He didn't find anything, did he? That's the
- 19:41beauty the way we got this rankeet fixed. They can search any time they
- 19:45like and find nothing. You know so much, Ryan Carter did find something.
- 19:49He found a fake diamond in my best pocket. You wlondering for why
- 19:52the devil did you have one? I don't have it. Carter planted it
- 19:56on me. I was praying, framed why? I don't know. I
- 20:00do know he wouldn't have framed me if he wasn't onny me now and I'll
- 20:04be washed like a hawk. So I'm leaving town on the first train.
- 20:07Now. Anybody follow you here? And not a chance a bloodhound couldn't have
- 20:11trailed me the way I came here. And I climbed up the fire escape
- 20:15in the back, and I got in through the kitchen window. And I
- 20:17ain't had a light in here either, in case somebody might be watching from
- 20:19the next door roof. Maybe I hope you're right more, don't worry.
- 20:23You're in the clear, but I ain't see. So I'm getting out of
- 20:27here soon as I get my half of the stuff you find up in my
- 20:32dark. Sure I can find it all right with the lights off, but
- 20:36a dozen detectives couldn't find it with the lights on. In the base of
- 20:41this lamp, right, yeah, very cleverly concealed in a hollow special wall
- 20:47they packed in cotton. Suse you can shake this thing. Come on,
- 20:51never mind the lecture. Let's have the stone. I gotta get him first,
- 20:53don't I an? I ain't kind them. Let me see there ought
- 20:59to be twenty eight of them, twenty nine we got away with when we
- 21:03left in the gun for a phony clue. I have to some like to
- 21:06see how we're divide him. I'll get a plank to watch some light.
- 21:07I'll get it. How's it, n Carter? Do you let my gun
- 21:12scare you? If life pretty, I won't have to use it. But
- 21:15if you get rough, so do I? Okay, Carter? What do
- 21:21you want? So a dozen detectives couldn't find the diamonds that boli, I
- 21:25thought you haven't hidden away pretty well. So I've been waiting in the bedroom
- 21:27until you found them for me. You mean you mean you was here?
- 21:32One argon you passed, then two feet of me when you came in.
- 21:34I should have known you was here. I don't doubt it. Oh boys,
- 21:40that was a very interesting conversation I heard you two having. You can
- 21:42put it in writing later when we go down and see Sergeant Mathieson, you'll
- 21:45be very happy to right. Didn't want to shoot you guys if I didn't
- 22:02have to, And it looks as if I didn't have to homicide Sarger Madison.
- 22:14Hi, Marry, Nick got a couple of crooks for you. You
- 22:17want them for a Christmas present? Sure? I want to tell me more,
- 22:19Santa Claus, tell me more. All right, send a squad car
- 22:23up to one seven five three North Garvan Street, And now we return to
- 22:33Nick Carter. As we pick up our story, we find Nick and Patty
- 22:37at headquarters. In Matty's office, Missus Stroud, the jeweler, has come
- 22:41down to identify the stolen gems. You're sure these are the diamond stolen from
- 22:47your store, mister Stroud, as near as I can identify unset stones,
- 22:52I'm sure. But there are only twenty eight here. Twenty nine were stolen.
- 22:55You forget the one you found in the wad of chewing gum. Of
- 22:57course with Cutter, I didn't think he did. Those two men confess chargeant
- 23:02yeap get everything down in black and white. Now Nick knocked all the fight
- 23:04out of him. I seemed to have been all wrong in my opinion of
- 23:08your ability, Miss Cutter. I apologize. I thought you were just pulling
- 23:12around today. I almost thought that myself, But knowing Nick, I should
- 23:17have had more faith in me. Look, Nick, don't fool around without
- 23:21He's got some idea in mind. But you have to admit, mister Carter,
- 23:23you would have been stuck if this accomplice of Ryan, this Morgan fella
- 23:27hadn't come into the store while you were there. So that was a help,
- 23:30certainly, But I could have got along without him. How do you
- 23:33suppose I happened to be in Ryan's flat in the first place? What I
- 23:36suppose you drailed him there? All wrong with the drought. I beat him
- 23:40there. I was waiting for him when he got there. But how could
- 23:41you do that? Nick? You ain't told me the whole story. Now
- 23:45take hold up. Told me all about that perk Ryan. We'll go on,
- 23:49Nick, give out no secret. Rick. I told you that Ryan
- 23:52started pulling out certain trays of diamonds from the vault before I made him pull
- 23:56them all out. Uh huh. Later, when I pulled out those same
- 24:00seven trades. Mister Stroud, you told me those were the trays that contained
- 24:03all the thorny stone. Yes, that's right. I told you that he
- 24:07was trying to be sure that if any diamonds were stolen, it would be
- 24:08the fake one. But you forget, at that time none of the clerks
- 24:11were supposed to know there were any fake stones, so he could only know
- 24:15where they were if he himself had put them there. Of course, Nick,
- 24:22it's so simple when you tell it. His real idea was to get
- 24:25rid of the thorny stones before they were discovered, if possible. But it
- 24:29couldn't have been Ryan. You searched him and found nothing, missus Stroud.
- 24:33You really wouldn't expect him to walk out of there with a diamond on him
- 24:37when he knew he might be searched any time, would you. No,
- 24:38No, he was too clever for that. Well, for the love of
- 24:41Pete, who did take them out of the store. It couldn't have been
- 24:45Morgan, could it. That would have been just as dangerous. Quite right,
- 24:48Maddy, Quite right. Neither of them carried them out. Huh,
- 24:52mister Stroud took the stones out for them. Now look here, carter if
- 24:55you're insinuine, easy, mister Stroud, I'm not saying you knew you were
- 24:59taking them out. Now, Here's what happened. Morgan came in the store
- 25:03every few days, always being sure Ryan was free to wait on him.
- 25:07He gave Ryan the pony stone. Ryan substituted them for the genuine ones.
- 25:11Then put the real stones and your overcoat pocket. Want make you mean those
- 25:15stones you found at the shacknoon will put there by Ryan? Exactly that?
- 25:19What why missus Strout had dinner in that restaurant he said he went to every
- 25:22night. He hung his overcoat on a hook, and Morgan, an expert
- 25:26pickpocket, picked the stones out of his overcoat pocket. In that way,
- 25:30neither Morgan nor Ryan had the stones on them at a time when they might
- 25:33be searched. H the wondering ever felt them in my pocket while I was
- 25:37on my way to the restaurant. You wear heavy gloves, don't you,
- 25:41Yes, And you put them on as soon as you leave the store,
- 25:42don't you. I do, well, see, practically no risk. Diamonds
- 25:48aren't very big in an overcoat pocket. You know well, I'll be dog
- 25:51gone. Oh, by the way, mister Brown, here are two diamonds
- 25:53that I found in your overcoat pocket this afternoon while I was waiting in your
- 25:56office. Morgan must have been the prize when he stretched your pocket for him
- 26:00tonight and didn't find them. Thanks, mister Carter, you seem to have
- 26:07taken care of everything. If Morgan hadn't waited to try to get those diamonds
- 26:10on you as you left to night, I might not have been able to
- 26:12beat him to Ryan's room, but he did and I did. Oh there's
- 26:18one more thing, Nick, you said when you held up the store that
- 26:21Ryan turned the doll on the vaut the wrong way so as to set off
- 26:23the alarm. Why should you do that if you really wanted the fake stone
- 26:27stolen, actually had nothing to lose. He knew the other two men had
- 26:30already pressed the foot buzzers and sounded the alarm that way, and it was
- 26:34safe for him to do it the way he ought to, and Kate,
- 26:37either of the other clerks, was watching him. Oh, I gotta admit
- 26:40it, Nick, You're own wonder. I suppose your planning the fake stone
- 26:42on Morgan like you did, so as to put him on his guard and
- 26:45start him worry. That's the answer may awful. And then I was saying,
- 26:49you remember when thieves fall out, honest men? Get that, genter.
- 26:53Yeah, well, these two thieves decided to fall out when they saw
- 26:57what was us and mister Stroud, an honest man, gets his diamonds back,
- 27:03which is as it should be. Quite a tale, Nick, what
- 27:18happened to Ryan and Morgan? They were brought to trial, Bob and sentenced
- 27:22to spend many long years behind bars. And believe me, they'll be a
- 27:26lot older than they are now when they get out. I'm glad to hear
- 27:29it. But what about the cleric who reached for his gun during the stake
- 27:32hold up? Did you ever find out about him? Oh? Yes,
- 27:33yes, it seems that he used to be in the state police out west
- 27:37when he was younger. Really very simple when you know the answer is fast,
- 27:40he says, Now, what can you tell us about the adventure that
- 27:42old x Clinch is going to bring his next week? A ib's the story
- 27:45of what happened, welcome back. We have to keep in mind that there
- 27:51were thirteen weeks between programs. Less we think that's the whole idea of Nick
- 27:56being called in as a propective organization is overused, and this is actually an
- 28:07interesting case in that it gives Nick a chance to really play the magician detective,
- 28:14and it's an interesting function. And it's one way, particularly when you're
- 28:18dealing with a very clever detective that keep so much of their thought processes hidden
- 28:23and it's all inexplicable and mysterious what they're doing, and whailaw, they have
- 28:29been the truly clever ones in capturing the criminals. You definitely had to use
- 28:33your imagination to follow this. It's kind of curious. Matty Mallet Mathison got
- 28:41called in and of course you know he answers the phone homicide. Of course
- 28:45there's nobody and no homicide. But this episode aired right before Christmas, and
- 28:52some of these detective shows, not all of them certainly, but many in
- 28:57episodes leading up to Chris or right around that time of year, is off
- 29:03on murders to have the detective soft cases such as thefts and robberies, and
- 29:08certainly that's the case here, and it is something that does recur with Nick
- 29:14Carter quite a bit, though there was no mention of Christmas, though that
- 29:18may have been in the lost portion of the episode. And by the way,
- 29:22for those who'd like to know. The episodes we missed include the Case
- 29:26of the Disguised Identity, the Case of the Studious Professor, the Case of
- 29:30the Asphyxiated Cat, the Case of the Supervised Robberies, the Case of the
- 29:36Reformed Redhead, the Case of the Mutilated Matchbook, the Case of the Insufficient
- 29:41Bank Account, the Case of the Stock Exchange Murder, the Case of the
- 29:45Extra Confessions, the Case of the Emerald Murders, the Case of the Restless
- 29:51Saint, the Case of the Persian Dagger, the Case of the Avenging Dead.
- 29:57So quite a few. This is one of the oddities about Nick Carter.
- 30:02With most radio programs, the major era for lost episodes of the show
- 30:08is during World War Two a lot of episodes that are missing, and then
- 30:14after the war tend to have more in circulation. With Nick Carter seems to
- 30:18be almost the opposite, although in nineteen forty eight it looks like we'll have
- 30:22quite a few available in a row, but no year as many as from
- 30:29nineteen forty three and forty four, which is definitely as I said an audity
- 30:33about this series, but between August twenty fifth of nineteen forty six and January
- 30:38nineteenth of nineteen forty seven, only two episodes are in circulation. Of the
- 30:45next three episodes will all be in order, which is a nice thing.
- 30:49All right, Well, that'll do it for today. Sendra comments to Box
