- 0:00Speaker 1: A poker game dispute in Dodge City leaves Will Peterson
- 0:03Speaker 1: wounded and Marshal Matt Dillon sets out to take Orlin
- 0:07Speaker 1: into custody. But the arrest reaches beyond the Marshal's office
- 0:11Speaker 1: when Orlin's father, a sheep farmer and Dillon's friend, refuses
- 0:16Speaker 1: to surrender his son. From CBS, this is Gunsmoke, Sheepdog,
- 0:22Speaker 1: episode 266, first heard May 12, 1957. William Conrad as
- 0:29Speaker 1: Matt Dillon, with Parley Bear as Chester, Georgia Ellis as Kitty,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and Howard McNear as Doc, Ralph Moody, Ben Wright, and
- 0:37Speaker 1: Vic Perrin are featured. The script is by Les Crutchfield,
- 0:41Speaker 1: with Norman MacDonald producing and directing. And now, our story begins.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's
- 1:02Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:05Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:07Speaker 2: gun smoke.
- 1:08Speaker 3: © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad.
- 1:29Speaker 2: The story of the violence that moved west with young America.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And the story of a man who moved with it.
- 1:36Speaker 4: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:41Speaker 4: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:45Speaker 4: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:49Speaker 4: And a little lonely.
- 2:17Speaker 5: I don't think that's all in Barkis over there, Mr.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Dillon.
- 2:20Speaker 6: No, that's as far. He probably knows where the boy is, though.
- 2:25Speaker 6: Let's wait here till he gets those sheep clear of
- 2:27Speaker 6: the brush and out onto the grass. Look at that
- 2:31Speaker 6: blamed dog go, Mr.
- 2:32Speaker 7: Dillon.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Why, he's doing more handling of them sheep than.
- 2:34Speaker 8: Old Jeb is.
- 2:35Speaker 6: He's taking good care of them, all right. Now, let's
- 2:38Speaker 6: go talk to Jeb.
- 2:39Speaker 5: I sure do wish we didn't have to, Mr.
- 2:42Speaker 6: Dillon.
- 2:43Speaker 8: So do I, but we don't have much choice. No, sir.
- 2:46Speaker 5: We sure don't. But ain't it too bad, though? He's
- 2:50Speaker 5: such a nice old fella.
- 2:52Speaker 8: Yeah, Jeb's all right.
- 2:53Speaker 5: Miss Barker's is a fine lady, too.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Chester, I like the family, too, and I'm just as
- 2:59Speaker 4: sorry about this as you are.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Yes, Mr.
- 3:03Speaker 8: Jones.
- 3:03Speaker 9: Howdy there, Marshal. Kind of far piece off the beaten
- 3:07Speaker 9: path now, ain't you?
- 3:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess so, Jeb. How are you?
- 3:11Speaker 9: Fit, hale, and ready for any plague that heaven wants
- 3:14Speaker 9: to send me. Morning, Chester.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Morning, Mr.
- 3:17Speaker 8: Barkis.
- 3:18Speaker 9: How do you like that flock of sheep, Marshal?
- 3:19Speaker 6: Looks like they wintered all right, doesn't it?
- 3:21Speaker 9: Yeah, wintered fine. Mighty hungry right now, though. I reckon
- 3:25Speaker 9: they'll be eating their heads off.
- 3:27Speaker 5: The next few days. If you ask me, they've already
- 3:29Speaker 5: started to.
- 3:30Speaker 9: Well, I've been holding them back there in the brush
- 3:32Speaker 9: for a week and a half until this grass dried off.
- 3:35Speaker 9: Put them on when it's muddy and they just trompa
- 3:37Speaker 9: down without eating more than half of it. Sheep's got
- 3:40Speaker 9: no sense at all.
- 3:41Speaker 8: I guess not.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Well, that dog of yours has sure got plenty of sense.
- 3:45Speaker 5: He's about as close to human as I've ever seen.
- 3:47Speaker 9: Maybe better than some, Chester. That dog could fight a
- 3:50Speaker 9: cougar or a wolf pack that killed him before he'd
- 3:53Speaker 9: let them cut a single sheep out of the flock.
- 3:55Speaker 9: They always take care of their own, sparring in them.
- 3:58Speaker 9: Sheepdogs like that.
- 4:00Speaker 8: Well.
- 4:06Speaker 6: Uh, Jeb, is your boy Orlin up here with you?
- 4:10Speaker 9: He might be down around the house.
- 4:11Speaker 8: And how will he stop by there?
- 4:13Speaker 9: Well, I don't know. I left before sunup this morning.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Your wife said Arlen didn't come home last night.
- 4:19Speaker 9: Now, Marshal, you know how young folks are.
- 4:21Speaker 8: Yeah, sure I know.
- 4:23Speaker 9: Arlen's been kind of restless lately.
- 4:26Speaker 6: Growing pains, I reckon.
- 4:28Speaker 9: Wants to stay around dodging work cattle this summer instead
- 4:31Speaker 9: of going along when we take the sheep out onto
- 4:33Speaker 9: the prairie. Yeah, he'll settle down.
- 4:35Speaker 8: After a while. You know where I might find him, Jim?
- 4:37Speaker 9: Well, he ought to be home any time now. Or nearly.
- 4:41Speaker 6: He ain't wanted.
- 4:42Speaker 9: Well, you know, wanted to stay out all night.
- 4:47Speaker 8: Tell me, Marshal.
- 4:48Speaker 9: Is this something official?
- 4:52Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm sorry, Jeb. It's trouble with the law. Well,
- 4:55Speaker 8: Arlen ain't never been in no trouble.
- 4:58Speaker 10: Not real trouble.
- 4:58Speaker 8: Well, he is now. He was in town last night, Jeb.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Till near morning there was an argument over a poker
- 5:05Speaker 4: game and.
- 5:07Speaker 6: He shot Will Peterson. No.
- 5:12Speaker 5: Did he kill him, Marshal?
- 5:13Speaker 6: Will was still alive when we left her right out here.
- 5:16Speaker 9: Well, I don't hold none with gunfighting, but if Will
- 5:19Speaker 9: Peterson drawed on my boy, he had a right to
- 5:21Speaker 9: defend himself.
- 5:22Speaker 6: Will wasn't wearing a gun.
- 5:24Speaker 5: I don't believe it.
- 5:26Speaker 9: Somebody's lying.
- 5:27Speaker 6: That may be, but that's something the jury's going to
- 5:29Speaker 6: have to decide.
- 5:31Speaker 9: If thine own offend, deliver them not unto Canaan, but
- 5:33Speaker 9: judge ye the false thereof in thine own tents.
- 5:36Speaker 6: The law doesn't look at it that way, Jeb.
- 5:39Speaker 9: Orlin's one of my flock, Marshal.
- 5:40Speaker 4: I'm sorry, but I've got to take Orlin in for trial.
- 5:43Speaker 8: And the best advice you can tell him is to
- 5:45Speaker 8: give himself up.
- 5:47Speaker 9: Marshal, I'll have to think about that and talk to
- 5:50Speaker 9: him before I decide.
- 5:51Speaker 6: All right, you do that, Jeb. But before you make
- 5:58Speaker 6: any move, you'll regret this. Remember one thing.
- 6:02Speaker 4: You're not a sheepdog, Jeb, and the law's not a
- 6:04Speaker 4: wolf pact. Orland is charged with attempted murder. And he's
- 6:09Speaker 4: gonna stand trial.
- 6:39Speaker 6: Matthew.
- 6:41Speaker 8: What?
- 6:41Speaker 6: It's me, Matthew. Oh, how are you, Miles?
- 6:45Speaker 7: Have you been up to Doc's office?
- 6:47Speaker 8: Yeah, I was just coming from there.
- 6:49Speaker 7: Is Will Peterson... He's.
- 6:51Speaker 8: Still alive, Miles. Doc's doing all he can for him.
- 6:55Speaker 7: Oh, it's a terrible thing, Matthew. Will's a fine man, hardworking,
- 6:59Speaker 7: wife and family.
- 7:00Speaker 6: Yeah, I know.
- 7:02Speaker 8: It's pretty tough on Jeb Barkus, too.
- 7:05Speaker 4: He just couldn't believe a son of his would shoot
- 7:07Speaker 4: a man down the way Orlin did.
- 7:10Speaker 8: Miles, you were there last night.
- 7:12Speaker 6: I mean, at the poker game, weren't you? Oh, I was.
- 7:15Speaker 8: Tell me, was there any excuse at all for what
- 7:18Speaker 8: the boy did?
- 7:20Speaker 6: Will accused all of them of cheating with the cards, which.
- 7:22Speaker 7: He was doing, as well as all of us with
- 7:24Speaker 7: a lick of sense knew he was. And the lad
- 7:26Speaker 7: knew that we knew. Perhaps that's what made him so mad.
- 7:29Speaker 8: He's always been pretty touchy.
- 7:31Speaker 7: Well, before one of us knew what he was up to,
- 7:33Speaker 7: he hauled out his gun and shot Will twice. And
- 7:36Speaker 7: then he ran out of the place hollering he'd kill
- 7:38Speaker 7: any one of us that came after him. If Will dies,
- 7:40Speaker 7: that's cold-blooded murder, Matthew. Nothing else but.
- 7:43Speaker 8: That sure sounds like it.
- 7:46Speaker 7: Well, I'll... Matthew, I think there's something that you ought
- 7:50Speaker 7: to know.
- 7:50Speaker 8: Oh, what?
- 7:52Speaker 7: There's talk around town that's been getting louder all day.
- 7:57Speaker 8: What kind of talk?
- 7:59Speaker 7: Well, some of them are saying that you're not making
- 8:01Speaker 7: any effort to find that boy and bring him in.
- 8:04Speaker 6: And any of them think they could do a better job?
- 8:07Speaker 7: Might be they're aiming.
- 8:08Speaker 8: To try, Matthew. Yeah, I see. Who's talking the loudest, Miles?
- 8:15Speaker 7: Well, Riff Kelso, mostly, I reckon.
- 8:17Speaker 8: Yeah, sure.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Riff always gets real law-abiding when he thinks there's a
- 8:22Speaker 4: chance of making it mob law.
- 8:24Speaker 8: Aye.
- 8:24Speaker 7: Well, I thought maybe you ought to know about it.
- 8:27Speaker 8: I'm not much obliged to you, Miles. Riff gets a
- 8:30Speaker 8: bunch of drunken loafers around him, there's no telling what
- 8:32Speaker 8: he might do.
- 8:32Speaker 10: John?
- 8:33Speaker 8: Yeah, what is it, Chester?
- 8:35Speaker 5: Old Jeff Barker's over at the Long Branch.
- 8:37Speaker 8: Oh?
- 8:37Speaker 5: He slipped in the back way. He says he wants
- 8:39Speaker 5: to see you.
- 8:40Speaker 8: Ah, good. Uh, Miles, let me know if anything serious
- 8:43Speaker 8: gets started, will you?
- 8:44Speaker 7: Oh, I surely will, Matthew.
- 8:48Speaker 5: Is he by himself, Chester? Well, I don't know for sure.
- 8:51Speaker 5: He won't say nothing till he sees you.
- 8:53Speaker 8: Well, I hope he's brought the boy in. It'd be
- 8:55Speaker 8: better all the way around if he has.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Well, how do you know Orlin even went home, Mr. Jones?
- 9:00Speaker 5: Maybe he just hit the trail out of town.
- 9:02Speaker 8: Now, I'm betting different, Chester. Orlin's not trail-wise.
- 9:06Speaker 6: He's never been away from home in his life. He'd
- 9:09Speaker 6: need a bedroll and grub and money. He'd run out
- 9:12Speaker 6: on that poker game without even picking.
- 9:14Speaker 8: Up his winnings.
- 9:19Speaker 10: Hello, Matt.
- 9:22Speaker 6: Chester.
- 9:23Speaker 8: Kitty. Kitty, is Jeb Barker still here?
- 9:27Speaker 10: Yeah, back there in the corner below the stairway.
- 9:29Speaker 8: Oh, good.
- 9:29Speaker 10: Matt, have you caught the boy yet?
- 9:32Speaker 8: No, not yet.
- 9:35Speaker 10: What's it all about?
- 9:37Speaker 8: I'm not sure, Kitty. Do I talk to Jeb?
- 9:40Speaker 10: Is Will Peterson still alive?
- 9:42Speaker 6: Yeah, so far he is.
- 9:44Speaker 10: You know, there's a lot of talk around this.
- 9:47Speaker 8: Yeah, I know.
- 9:47Speaker 6: Miles McTaggart's just telling me. But talk never moved any mountains, Kitty.
- 9:53Speaker 10: Yeah, it's moved mobs, though. Suppose Will dies, Matt.
- 9:56Speaker 6: Kitty, a man would go crazy on this job if
- 9:59Speaker 6: he went around supposed.
- 10:00Speaker 9: Things.
- 10:01Speaker 10: Just the same, it could mean trouble.
- 10:02Speaker 8: Forget it. Well, I'm going over there and talk to Jed.
- 10:06Speaker 4: All right, Matt.
- 10:14Speaker 6: Evening, Jed.
- 10:15Speaker 9: I figured I ought to come and tell you, Marshal.
- 10:19Speaker 9: It was the only just thing to do.
- 10:22Speaker 8: Have you seen Orlin?
- 10:23Speaker 9: Yeah, I've seen him.
- 10:24Speaker 8: Where is he?
- 10:26Speaker 9: Marshal, we've been friends for a long time, you and me.
- 10:30Speaker 9: I got all the respect in the world for you.
- 10:33Speaker 9: But I reckon this time we're on opposite sides of
- 10:35Speaker 9: the fence.
- 10:36Speaker 8: Oh?
- 10:37Speaker 9: Orlin ain't guilty.
- 10:38Speaker 5: He told me all about it.
- 10:40Speaker 9: There was three of them jumped him just because he
- 10:42Speaker 9: was winning. And all three of them was armed. He
- 10:45Speaker 9: had to kill himself to fence.
- 10:47Speaker 4: The others tell it in a different way, Jeb.
- 10:49Speaker 6: These lies, they made up among themselves.
- 10:51Speaker 9: Execute justice and righteousness.
- 10:53Speaker 5: In the land, the book says.
- 10:54Speaker 6: But they won't.
- 10:55Speaker 5: They're out to hang him.
- 10:57Speaker 9: I heard the talk around town tonight.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Judge Bent's an honest man, Jeb, and you know that.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Orlin will get a fair trial.
- 11:05Speaker 9: I'm sorry, Marshal. He ain't going to trial.
- 11:09Speaker 6: All right, Jeb.
- 11:12Speaker 4: I've been laying back giving you a chance because I
- 11:15Speaker 4: figured it'd be.
- 11:15Speaker 8: Better that way, but I can't do it any longer.
- 11:19Speaker 8: You're making the biggest mistake of your life, Jet. Now
- 11:23Speaker 8: you just think about it. Is Will any better at all? No.
- 11:45Speaker 9: Yeah, it's a thankless job, Matt Doctrine. No matter what
- 11:48Speaker 9: you do, people are going to die anyway sooner or later.
- 11:51Speaker 4: But a lot of times you can try to make
- 11:53Speaker 4: it later.
- 11:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 10: Want some coffee, Matt?
- 12:01Speaker 8: Yeah, I guess so.
- 12:04Speaker 4: You know, it'd be a lucky thing for old Jeb
- 12:06Speaker 4: and the boy if Will does manage to pull through.
- 12:10Speaker 9: And found it, Matt, part of its old Jeb's fault.
- 12:14Speaker 9: He's rode too close herd on that young'un.
- 12:16Speaker 8: Oh, thanks.
- 12:17Speaker 10: He never gave him a chance.
- 12:18Speaker 8: To grow up.
- 12:22Speaker 6: Maybe you're right.
- 12:24Speaker 9: Matt, people are going to go right on committing crimes
- 12:27Speaker 9: and dying no matter what you and I try to
- 12:30Speaker 9: do about it.
- 12:31Speaker 8: So why don't we just give up?
- 12:34Speaker 6: I don't know, Doc.
- 12:35Speaker 8: Why don't we? Maybe I should just.
- 12:39Speaker 9: Stick to my car and his job and forget the rest. Yeah,
- 12:43Speaker 9: then all I have to do is tell if somebody's
- 12:45Speaker 9: dead or not.
- 12:47Speaker 7: Mr.
- 12:49Speaker 8: Dillon?
- 12:50Speaker 6: Yeah, Chester.
- 12:51Speaker 5: Riff Kelso's coming down the street. Got a mob of
- 12:53Speaker 5: drunks with him.
- 12:54Speaker 8: He has, huh?
- 12:57Speaker 6: Doc, I'll see you later.
- 12:59Speaker 4: I'm going to arrest all of them and jail him
- 13:01Speaker 4: on an assault charge before they.
- 13:03Speaker 8: Really start something. Oh, Matt. Huh? Wait. Yeah. Will is dead.
- 13:16Speaker 8: I'll bring Orlin in for murder.
- 13:18Speaker 10: Oh.
- 13:46Speaker 11: Here they come, Mr.
- 13:46Speaker 8: Dillon.
- 13:47Speaker 5: We've got quite a bunch with him.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Yeah, they're barflies, mostly, and drifters going along for the show.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Keep your eye on Mike Ellery and Red Stoddard. I'll
- 13:55Speaker 4: handle Rip Kelso, and the rest of them don't count.
- 13:57Speaker 8: All right, Chief. You boys got something in mind?
- 14:16Speaker 5: More than you got, Marshal. The way things look.
- 14:21Speaker 4: I suppose you'd tell me about it, Riff.
- 14:24Speaker 11: Dang right we'll tell you about it. We're all friends
- 14:28Speaker 11: of Will Peterson's, Marshal. We aim to see justice done.
- 14:33Speaker 8: That's fine. So do I.
- 14:34Speaker 6: Well, then why ain't you done nothing about it?
- 14:37Speaker 5: You had since last night to find that kid and
- 14:39Speaker 5: bring him in.
- 14:40Speaker 6: What are you trying to do? Let him get clear
- 14:43Speaker 6: out of the country? He hasn't gone anyplace. How do
- 14:46Speaker 6: you know where he's gone?
- 14:48Speaker 5: You sure he ain't spent no time out looking for him...
- 14:51Speaker 5: and all the while Will laying up there dying?
- 14:53Speaker 6: You're wrong, Riff.
- 14:55Speaker 8: Will's already dead.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Dead?
- 14:58Speaker 6: You hear that, boys? Will's already dead. That murdering little
- 15:02Speaker 6: rat shot Will down in cold blood... and the marshal
- 15:05Speaker 6: ain't even bothered to go after him.
- 15:06Speaker 5: At least not till now.
- 15:09Speaker 11: Now that he's given that murderer plenty of time to
- 15:11Speaker 11: get away.
- 15:12Speaker 4: You got any reason figured out why I'd do that?
- 15:15Speaker 6: You're dang right I got a reason.
- 15:18Speaker 11: Everybody in town knows you and Jeb's been friends for years.
- 15:23Speaker 4: What I say is, if there's gonna be law, there's
- 15:26Speaker 4: gonna be law for everybody.
- 15:27Speaker 6: And that goes for the Marshall's friends, too.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Well, I'm glad to see you've changed your way of thinking, Riff.
- 15:36Speaker 4: So you and your boys are out to enforce the
- 15:38Speaker 4: law tonight.
- 15:39Speaker 6: Is that it? You're dang right that's it. We got
- 15:44Speaker 6: the rope along to enforce it with. If you ain't mad.
- 15:47Speaker 11: Enough to do your duty, then we're going to do
- 15:49Speaker 11: it for you.
- 15:51Speaker 6: All right, Rip, shut up and listen. The rest of you, too,
- 15:55Speaker 6: shut up!
- 15:59Speaker 4: Because this is the last one you're going to get.
- 16:03Speaker 4: All I've been marshal here, nobody's ever been strung up
- 16:05Speaker 4: by a mob. And as long as I go on
- 16:07Speaker 4: being marshal, nobody's ever going to be.
- 16:11Speaker 8: Now, is that clear?
- 16:12Speaker 7: Yes.
- 16:14Speaker 11: You're bucking a pretty good-sized crowd here, ain't you?
- 16:19Speaker 8: Not as big as the law, Riff.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Might be we're aiming to change the law some, Marshal.
- 16:25Speaker 6: And the law, man, right along with it.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Anybody who wants to apply for the job is welcome
- 16:29Speaker 4: to put in his bid any time.
- 16:33Speaker 6: How about right now? That's not the way to apply, Riff.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Not with a gun. Now, are there any other candidates?
- 16:52Speaker 4: All right, then a couple of you carry him upstairs
- 16:54Speaker 4: and get Doc to patch him up. He's not hurt bad.
- 16:57Speaker 4: And the rest of you, get on about your business.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Now, go on, move. All right, Chester. Let's go bring
- 17:05Speaker 6: in Orland.
- 17:24Speaker 5: Ain't much sign of life around, Mr.
- 17:26Speaker 6: Dillon.
- 17:27Speaker 8: There must be somebody here.
- 17:31Speaker 5: House is all dark.
- 17:32Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 17:33Speaker 6: Oh, watch yourself, Chester. Don't tell them what that crazy
- 17:36Speaker 6: kid will do.
- 17:37Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 17:42Speaker 5: Maybe old Jeb took the whole family and run for it.
- 17:45Speaker 4: No, there's a horse and wagon tied by the barn there.
- 17:51Speaker 5: Well, I don't reckon they'd go off and leave a
- 17:53Speaker 5: horse standing hitched, would they? Who is it?
- 17:56Speaker 8: Who's there?
- 17:56Speaker 6: It's Matt Dillon, Jeb. Are you alone?
- 18:00Speaker 9: I'm alone, Marshal.
- 18:02Speaker 10: Come on up.
- 18:13Speaker 6: Jeb, I can't make it easy on you any longer.
- 18:16Speaker 8: Will Peterson died a little while ago.
- 18:21Speaker 9: I reckon I already know that, Marshal.
- 18:23Speaker 6: Somehow I just kind of felt it.
- 18:25Speaker 8: The charge is murder now, Jeb. I've come for Arlen.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I know.
