- 0:04Speaker 1: Here's some stories about show we made about a bunch
- 0:10Speaker 1: of docs and nurses and stories around here. Yeah, around here.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I don't want you touching me. I will probably touch
- 0:31Speaker 1: you a couple of times throughout the rod. It's distracting
- 0:33Speaker 1: when I drive. You know how when people get dressed
- 0:37Speaker 1: in the morning, they say like, Oh, I'm gonna put
- 0:39Speaker 1: on a nice outfit for my my guy or my girl,
- 0:42Speaker 1: or I want to put on a cute outfit for
- 0:44Speaker 1: that person at work. You know. Well, this morning I
- 0:48Speaker 1: put on my grow goose socks. Yes, I couldn't tell
- 0:51Speaker 1: what the lion green was. I was like, is he
- 0:52Speaker 1: wearing ankleweights? Happening? I put on my grow goose socks
- 0:55Speaker 1: for Donald so handsome? Yeah, I look unhappy he is.
- 0:58Speaker 1: You're not happy with it? You know why? I'm not happy.
- 1:01Speaker 1: You want them, I'll give them to you right after
- 1:03Speaker 1: I wear them today. Sucked them up. Man, You are
- 1:07Speaker 1: all right. We slept in the bed in our underwear,
- 1:12Speaker 1: just our underwear, back to back. Baby, that's how close
- 1:15Speaker 1: we are. Yeah, we've spooned. I don't feel like we've spooned. Well,
- 1:19Speaker 1: we haven't spoon spooned. Like there was no like there
- 1:23Speaker 1: was no, like my my groin didn't touch your booty. Alright,
- 1:30Speaker 1: so the harbor. Alright, So road trip, road trip trip.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Are we rolling to the first ever road trip edition
- 1:44Speaker 1: of the podcast Doctor's Real Friends. Um, we're in a
- 1:48Speaker 1: Hunda Tu song. Thank you to Hunda for sponsoring this
- 1:51Speaker 1: uh episode of our show. And we came up with
- 1:55Speaker 1: this really cool idea to do an episode where we
- 1:58Speaker 1: drive around Hollywood and talk about some places that really
- 2:01Speaker 1: influenced me and Donald's lives while Inwood. Yes, and we're
- 2:06Speaker 1: starting in the valley where where Donald lives now. And
- 2:08Speaker 1: we're not gonna say the street that so if you
- 2:11Speaker 1: said the valley, it's pretty hard to find you in
- 2:15Speaker 1: the valley. But Donald lives or may not live in
- 2:18Speaker 1: the valley. Um and um, so what year let's start.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Let's start at the very beginning. I don't know what
- 2:31Speaker 1: it was that I moved out here. I'm gonna be
- 2:33Speaker 1: honest with you, Like, I just know they were too high. No,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I didn't know that. I was like in my twenties,
- 2:39Speaker 1: like I was three. I knew it was. I know
- 2:41Speaker 1: it's right, it's just been so long, Like I've lived
- 2:44Speaker 1: here longer than I lived in New York. I grew
- 2:46Speaker 1: up in New York, born and raised in New York,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and so when I moved out here, I was like,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I don't know. I want to say I was high,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but I was very young, and I've been here longer
- 2:57Speaker 1: than I lived in New York for it, and so
- 3:00Speaker 1: I couldn't tell you the exact year. Like if you
- 3:02Speaker 1: asked me what year Rocco was born, I just learned
- 3:05Speaker 1: that it was two thousand. Really, yeah, he's the one
- 3:11Speaker 1: that teaches me that ship. That's the crazy feel that
- 3:14Speaker 1: you've smoked away that part of your memory. Yeah, all right,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I smoked away a lot of ship, dude. You do
- 3:22Speaker 1: some memory exercises that today. I couldn't remember short ribs
- 3:27Speaker 1: for some reason, Like that's the word. I was like,
- 3:31Speaker 1: what kind of ribs are those? They're beef but they're
- 3:34Speaker 1: like they're not beef ribs, but they're not. And I
- 3:37Speaker 1: was like, flank ribs. That's so cool when that comes
- 3:40Speaker 1: up like that. I tried to tell you all, when
- 3:42Speaker 1: you signal in your dashboard, the camera on the side
- 3:47Speaker 1: shows you what's on your side, All right, next time,
- 3:53Speaker 1: you sure of that because I've never seen that before.
- 3:55Speaker 1: That's really that is honestly very cool. That's very cool
- 3:58Speaker 1: because I'm always worried about my blind spot. M hm.
- 4:01Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, worry about your blind spot.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna never worry about I never worry about my blonds.
- 4:11Speaker 1: It's going to be a good You know what this
- 4:13Speaker 1: reminds me of in swingers when they're like hard but
- 4:21Speaker 1: then right before they get to Vegas, Vegas, Vegas And
- 4:26Speaker 1: that's not Vegas either where they shot it, no where
- 4:30Speaker 1: they where they The first lights that you see when
- 4:33Speaker 1: you're going towards Vegas isn't Vegas. It's Barstow, isn't it. Yeah? Um,
- 4:40Speaker 1: well that's pretty cool. I like that. This is pretty.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I mean, this is meant to be like a family car.
- 4:46Speaker 1: It's pretty. It's pretty sexy. You look pretty. You look
- 4:48Speaker 1: pretty hot driving it. I'm not gonna lie it. You
- 4:50Speaker 1: look good. Thank you very much, guys, because I realized
- 4:53Speaker 1: it's like, you know, you can have it's a family car,
- 4:55Speaker 1: but it's me for sexy dads like you. So do
- 4:58Speaker 1: you even look at your mirror? You always look at
- 5:00Speaker 1: your marriage. But you know what you had me thinking.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I was thinking, like you know, because you know you're
- 5:06Speaker 1: not like the greatest driver in the world. And I
- 5:09Speaker 1: was thinking about how happy I was that the Tucson
- 5:12Speaker 1: has all these safety features. Excuse me, where did you
- 5:17Speaker 1: get that? I'm not the greatest driver. I think you're
- 5:19Speaker 1: a good driver, but you're not necessarily like the greatest.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I disagree with you. So I was happy that the
- 5:24Speaker 1: tuc has all these You think you're the greatest driver.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I am. I am the greatest to take this Tucson
- 5:31Speaker 1: on the track? You know what it is? I feel
- 5:34Speaker 1: like I'm Peter Quill and your rocket Raccoon. Do you
- 5:38Speaker 1: know who they? I don't know what that means. It's
- 5:41Speaker 1: like he's the captain, but you think you're the captain,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and then you guys probably over whose ship? This really is?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Like Chewy and Han Chews we complains a lot like
- 5:52Speaker 1: you let me drive good. I feel like, isn't that
- 6:12Speaker 1: what he's saying? And probably probably? But do you never
- 6:15Speaker 1: hear Hans say anything like you know, well shut up
- 6:18Speaker 1: if you think you can do so much better than
- 6:19Speaker 1: do it. You never hear Hans say that. So I
- 6:21Speaker 1: don't know if Chewi complains about driving. I think Chewi.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Do you think Chewy likes working for Han. Yeah, they're
- 6:27Speaker 1: best friends. Now is Hans pay Chewy? No, they make
- 6:31Speaker 1: equal money. So whenever they do an assignment they get
- 6:35Speaker 1: they split it. I mean, let's think about it. We
- 6:37Speaker 1: don't need clothes, so it doesn't have to pay for that.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Does Chewi Pooh? Most certainly you never see Chewi Pooh.
- 6:44Speaker 1: You don't see anybody can in Star Wars, but he's
- 6:47Speaker 1: never like I think the Mandalorians the first time we
- 6:52Speaker 1: ever saw a toilet in Star Wars. Star Wars in
- 7:00Speaker 1: your podcast? Um, all right, so Donald, tell us a
- 7:04Speaker 1: little more about your You don't remember the year you
- 7:07Speaker 1: came out? How long until you got a part? I
- 7:10Speaker 1: came out the part. So this was California, so much
- 7:14Speaker 1: earlier than I moved right, And my mom was like,
- 7:18Speaker 1: my mom kept telling me that's a mistake. All you're
- 7:20Speaker 1: gonna do is get there and you're not gonna have
- 7:22Speaker 1: any money and you'll be back because of that for
- 7:25Speaker 1: the confidence. Mom she was like, when you go to California,
- 7:28Speaker 1: you should go because the job brings you there. And
- 7:30Speaker 1: I was like, okay, fine. So the goal was how
- 7:33Speaker 1: can I get a job that shoots in l A.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And so when Clueless happened and they were talking about
- 7:37Speaker 1: making the television show. I remember thinking, this is my
- 7:41Speaker 1: way out, this is my way out the Clueless movie.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You were still living in New York? Yes, And where
- 7:47Speaker 1: did you shoot the Clues movie? In Los Angeles? So
- 7:49Speaker 1: you came out to shoot that but then moved back
- 7:51Speaker 1: to New York, right, And at that point I made
- 7:52Speaker 1: friends with Seth Green and breck and Meyer. Where did
- 7:55Speaker 1: you live while you're making a Cluss movie? At the
- 7:59Speaker 1: uh smoked it away? No? I didn't smoke it away.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I just don't know the name of it. But it's
- 8:07Speaker 1: right off of La Saga. Okay, so the apartment or something. Yeah,
- 8:11Speaker 1: it was like an apartment slash hotel. But I've made
- 8:14Speaker 1: friends with Breckon and Seth already, and so I was like,
- 8:18Speaker 1: you know, I would, I would telling the audience that
- 8:21Speaker 1: Donald was merging onto the one on one was dangerous
- 8:25Speaker 1: highways in the world. You're getting on the freeway? Is
- 8:28Speaker 1: that so? But I'm not Stacy Dash? But can you
- 8:36Speaker 1: turn around into your screen face? No doing to the
- 8:38Speaker 1: camera the most famous car screen ever? Where did you
- 8:47Speaker 1: shoot that on the One on one? No? That was shot?
- 8:49Speaker 1: You know there's this. You know where the Aquarium of
- 8:52Speaker 1: the Pacific is, there's a little private freeway over there,
- 8:55Speaker 1: and we shot him on that down Yeah, well there's
- 8:58Speaker 1: never any cars on it. Old trivia for you. I
- 9:01Speaker 1: did a pilot that didn't come out. But the seven
- 9:04Speaker 1: ten Freeway, which is a big free they were building,
- 9:06Speaker 1: stopped for political reasons and all sorts of Michigas. They
- 9:10Speaker 1: weren't able to finish it. So for like a mile,
- 9:13Speaker 1: it just goes and then dead ends, and they rented
- 9:15Speaker 1: to film productions to use because it's a mile of
- 9:19Speaker 1: freeway that's a dead end. I think that's where we
- 9:21Speaker 1: shot this, and that's where a lot of the Aquarium
- 9:24Speaker 1: of the Pacific. Maybe it's the same thing, but I
- 9:27Speaker 1: just know that a lot of people um have shot
- 9:30Speaker 1: there before because it's this kind of because of whatever
- 9:32Speaker 1: politics happened, they just they dead end and they couldn't
- 9:35Speaker 1: keep building it, and so it's like a mile of
- 9:37Speaker 1: freeway you can use for shoots. Where they shot the
- 9:39Speaker 1: opening scene of Lala Land. No, that was an actual freeway,
- 9:43Speaker 1: which is wild to me. Yeah, they actually shut down
- 9:46Speaker 1: a freeway to shoot the opening. They did that, But
- 9:51Speaker 1: Donald start Land, we could turn this into a podcast
- 9:53Speaker 1: that also visits Lala Land locations. We're gonna grip with
- 9:57Speaker 1: observatory and show so that. So that looked like it
- 10:16Speaker 1: was gonna happen, and when it did, they gave me
- 10:19Speaker 1: five thousand dollars to move to Los Angeles and with
- 10:22Speaker 1: that five thousand dollars, I got the apartment that were
- 10:27Speaker 1: It's funny that I got the exact theme on money
- 10:29Speaker 1: from my parents to come out here. We both started
- 10:32Speaker 1: with five grand and nothing else, nothing else. That was
- 10:34Speaker 1: it five brands. And it wasn't like I had the
- 10:37Speaker 1: comfort of thing like I can always ask my parents,
- 10:39Speaker 1: because like, no, they just gave me five grands. That
- 10:41Speaker 1: was my only source of being able to hit up
- 10:44Speaker 1: anybody for extra money was my parents, and they had said,
- 10:46Speaker 1: here's five grand and I put it all into getting
- 10:49Speaker 1: a car. I had to get a used car. Yeah,
- 10:52Speaker 1: I've rented a car when I rented cars when I
- 10:54Speaker 1: first got out here, cuse I thought that would be cheaper.
- 10:57Speaker 1: And then it wasn't cheaper anymore because some lady on
- 11:00Speaker 1: the street that we're about to go to had a
- 11:03Speaker 1: heart attack while driving. My car was parked out in front.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I'll never forget this. I had just come back from
- 11:08Speaker 1: playing paintball with my buddy Meach and I was showering
- 11:13Speaker 1: and Meach was playing this back when Nintendo with the
- 11:16Speaker 1: Cube was out right. Yeah. So he's playing fucking Bond
- 11:20Speaker 1: on that ship, practicing uh and it's fun. He knocks
- 11:26Speaker 1: on the fucking door and I'm like, dude, what the heck?
- 11:29Speaker 1: I'm in the shower and he goes, yo, I think
- 11:32Speaker 1: somebody just hit your car. And I was like what.
- 11:36Speaker 1: And so I go out and there's this you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: old white lady. Well, I think this might be quicker
- 11:42Speaker 1: than because then we got to get off one because
- 11:46Speaker 1: it's Sunday. Um and she's like in the street like uh,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and the cops are there and she's like, oh god,
- 11:53Speaker 1: and it was It's it's so long ago. I was
- 11:56Speaker 1: so new to Los Angeles that I still had my
- 11:59Speaker 1: uh license. What's that somebody's coming up on that? That's interesting.
- 12:04Speaker 1: That's good stuff. Assholes like that that speed up when
- 12:07Speaker 1: you're freaking trying to turn. I know, that's the one.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Let's talk about the Tucson just gave you a warning
- 12:12Speaker 1: that that guy was over there. Thank you, Thank you,
- 12:14Speaker 1: Tucson give it up. Pet anyway, you know, Pet, come
- 12:19Speaker 1: down and so and so I walked outside and she's,
- 12:28Speaker 1: you know, faint. She's like, oh God, I'm so my
- 12:31Speaker 1: heart And it was so long ago. I was no,
- 12:35Speaker 1: the cops were already there. I'm so of Los Angeles
- 12:38Speaker 1: that I still have my uh my Springfield where I
- 12:44Speaker 1: got my I got my license at Springfield, Massachusetts, because
- 12:46Speaker 1: I kept failing in New York. So I was like,
- 12:47Speaker 1: let me go to Springfield. There's too much data coming in.
- 12:52Speaker 1: You couldn't get your license in New York, so you
- 12:55Speaker 1: went to Massachusetts. No, that's wrong, I take that back.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I never heard anyone leaving the states getting as I
- 13:01Speaker 1: got it in I got. I got my license in
- 13:07Speaker 1: uh in New York. But I don't know how this
- 13:11Speaker 1: worked out. I had I stayed with my grandfather for
- 13:13Speaker 1: like a summer, just hanging out with him in Springfield.
- 13:16Speaker 1: And while I was in Springfield, instead of getting a
- 13:19Speaker 1: New York license, I got a Springfield license because I
- 13:22Speaker 1: just used his address, like I had already passed the
- 13:24Speaker 1: test and all I needed to show with proof that
- 13:26Speaker 1: I did that and if I if I'm correct, But
- 13:28Speaker 1: I had a Springfield license, right and I bought my
- 13:31Speaker 1: car in Springfield also, so I'm so new to California
- 13:35Speaker 1: that I still have that license. And there was this
- 13:37Speaker 1: one cop I don't know her name, but she would.
- 13:39Speaker 1: She was notorious for telling people, come on, now, you've
- 13:42Speaker 1: lived out here long enough, it's time for you to
- 13:44Speaker 1: get your license. Like she did the beat in Hollywood
- 13:47Speaker 1: and pulled over everybody and actors from all over the
- 13:51Speaker 1: country who never updated their license, right, and she's like,
- 13:54Speaker 1: you've lived here long enough, donald's time to get your
- 13:56Speaker 1: new license. But like she was notorious in Hollywood. So
- 13:59Speaker 1: when she when I handed her my license, I was like,
- 14:01Speaker 1: here we go and she said it and I was like, um,
- 14:07Speaker 1: I had to pay for the car that this lady
- 14:09Speaker 1: hit what because for some reason I thought I don't
- 14:14Speaker 1: need to get insurance on it because I was like
- 14:17Speaker 1: an extra however amount a month, how much it costs.
- 14:24Speaker 1: It's something like it was a Vovo too, so something
- 14:27Speaker 1: like grand or something like that, something like that, and
- 14:31Speaker 1: I had to pay for it. I think we brought
- 14:33Speaker 1: it down to we got it down to fourteen grand.
- 14:35Speaker 1: And I remember I was doing the television show at
- 14:37Speaker 1: the time, and it was the whole check like literally
- 14:40Speaker 1: the whole check. It was like, you know, because first
- 14:44Speaker 1: of all, a lot of people don't know this, but
- 14:47Speaker 1: when you started television show and you don't really have
- 14:49Speaker 1: that many credits, they don't pay you that much money.
- 14:53Speaker 1: And they didn't pay me that much for Clueless for
- 14:56Speaker 1: the whole run, and I remember thinking, damn the whole check,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and uh, I only get twenty two a freaking season,
- 15:05Speaker 1: you know, and I paid for the car. Wow, that's
- 15:09Speaker 1: a big hit. No, no punt intend remember get the
- 15:13Speaker 1: cute farmers market people's market earlier this morning. I remember
- 15:20Speaker 1: opening the trunk because that was the only thing, Like,
- 15:23Speaker 1: the trunk was so broken at all you have to
- 15:24Speaker 1: do was just lifted up and all my paintball like
- 15:27Speaker 1: I had owned paintball guns and everything that was one
- 15:29Speaker 1: of your faces and everything was in text. And I
- 15:32Speaker 1: was like, I remember you went through a mega paintball phase. Yeah,
- 15:38Speaker 1: I've gone through several paintball phases where it was like,
- 15:41Speaker 1: what I like, we should do a fake Doctor's Real
- 15:43Speaker 1: Friends paintball. Oh my gosh, you are talking my line
- 15:48Speaker 1: lounge and they just get the coffee sparkling water and
- 15:54Speaker 1: hit an observation deck and yeah, well you got that.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Let me tell the year should be like popping people
- 15:59Speaker 1: from a really good shot. Thought you are shooting age
- 16:02Speaker 1: actually actual gun. That's fine. I don't need from you here.
- 16:08Speaker 1: You could post up on like a lookout tower and
- 16:10Speaker 1: just pick people off. Okay, you know what if I
- 16:12Speaker 1: could be a sniper in a paintball game, then yes,
- 16:15Speaker 1: very that's very My paintball phase was so big that
- 16:23Speaker 1: at one point me and my boy Dion Richmond but
- 16:26Speaker 1: from the Cosby Show, we're invited to were invited to
- 16:30Speaker 1: join a team. Yeah, and it got when when we
- 16:35Speaker 1: realized we weren't going to do it. When they were like,
- 16:37Speaker 1: so we have practice, and we were like, there's such
- 16:41Speaker 1: a thing as you're talking about. Absolutely, you're talking about practice.
- 16:45Speaker 1: But it wasn't just us, like be real from Cypress Hill,
- 16:48Speaker 1: him and him and him and the whole gang. They
- 16:52Speaker 1: I think they were like the soul Assassins or something
- 16:54Speaker 1: like that. They were and they were freaking paint That
- 16:57Speaker 1: was their paintball team. I played paintball with Will Smith
- 17:00Speaker 1: because of it, Like yeah, dude, oh god, look here's
- 17:03Speaker 1: a crazy ship. Why didn't you only play with famous
- 17:05Speaker 1: black people? Well, it sounds like the best way into that.
- 17:09Speaker 1: It's just said, when you start playing paintball, you start
- 17:12Speaker 1: getting invited. People here about this and start inviting you out.
- 17:15Speaker 1: So Will Smith plays paintball and we were like, I
- 17:18Speaker 1: remember all of us were like, yeah, we're going to
- 17:19Speaker 1: play with Will. Oh, We're gonna suck Will you know,
- 17:23Speaker 1: suck him up, like singing songs about how we were
- 17:26Speaker 1: going to destroy Will Smith. Right, He's like, he's just
- 17:30Speaker 1: like the characters in the movie It's probably Sup and
- 17:33Speaker 1: he's jumping over barrels and ship doing rolls and stuff,
- 17:38Speaker 1: busting shots like it literally looked like it was the movie.
- 17:41Speaker 1: My experience of paintball is like, if you go there
- 17:44Speaker 1: and rent one of their guns, you've done because the
- 17:47Speaker 1: people who you're playing with, like Donald, are all kidded
- 17:49Speaker 1: out with the latest stuff, and I was just getting
- 17:53Speaker 1: destroyed because people were so into it. I was playing
- 17:55Speaker 1: with people like you're saying Will Smith and you apparently
- 17:59Speaker 1: I remember seeing I remember seeing that and being like,
- 18:01Speaker 1: holy cow, this dude is just like he is in
- 18:04Speaker 1: the movie. That's amazing, Like I really wanted that would
- 18:07Speaker 1: be a fun thing to do together, so well, you
- 18:09Speaker 1: can post up. It's just really hot right now, that's
- 18:12Speaker 1: the only thing you got to put on all the
- 18:13Speaker 1: clothings make so you don't get it really hurt that bad.
- 18:18Speaker 1: It hurts. It was like an air gun can't worse
- 18:24Speaker 1: than that my body from paintball shots twenty years ago.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Let's put it that way. Damn Really, people, isn't like
- 18:30Speaker 1: frozen paintballs or something, you know, just some of it
- 18:32Speaker 1: was close range. A lot of you know what I mean, frozen?
- 18:34Speaker 1: What's that that that's that's a that's a very illegal
- 18:37Speaker 1: thing that people do, which is really dangerous, is they'll
- 18:38Speaker 1: freeze their paintballs because they hurt a lot more, but
- 18:40Speaker 1: they also travel a lot better and they don't cause yourself.
- 18:43Speaker 1: It's so it's it's it's very messed that. I thought
- 18:45Speaker 1: it was harder for it to travel because the paint's
- 18:48Speaker 1: frozen on one side and then the other side isn't interesting.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Maybe it's just for preservation purposes. Have you seen this
- 18:54Speaker 1: new water gun thing that has little water pellets. There's
- 18:58Speaker 1: some hybrid water gun thing that's like the new craze I.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I don't even think they're available because they're sold out.
- 19:04Speaker 1: But it's like it's like paintballs, but they're little and
- 19:08Speaker 1: they're filled with water and so you can like blast
- 19:11Speaker 1: your friends. I don't think they I don't think they
- 19:15Speaker 1: don't hurt for kids, So I don't think they hurt.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Like like a like a paintball gun, right, paintballs called
- 19:21Speaker 1: no I love that. My mom would not when my
- 19:23Speaker 1: prime paintball phase, my mom was like, you're not getting
- 19:25Speaker 1: a paintball gun. She's like, when you're eighteen, then you
- 19:27Speaker 1: can buy your own paintball gun. And of course at
- 19:29Speaker 1: that point I was in college and had no money,
- 19:30Speaker 1: and it was like, well, I can't spend five dollars
- 19:33Speaker 1: pall when I was a kid. Yeah, for a good one.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I mean, if you want to get gas, you want
- 19:36Speaker 1: to get the hopper, all the things that you need
- 19:38Speaker 1: point yeah, the CEO two to make it. Actually they
- 19:40Speaker 1: see the CEO two or now can you have that automatic?
- 19:43Speaker 1: Like whatever? Oh, and you're allowed to play with people
- 19:48Speaker 1: that don't know that you originally weren't. And then all
- 19:51Speaker 1: of a sudden, people's hands got so much fast. What
- 19:53Speaker 1: they automatic, what they made is they made this this
- 19:56Speaker 1: special two finger triggers that has what's called ramping on it.
- 19:59Speaker 1: And if it's of senses that you're starting to pull
- 20:01Speaker 1: the trigger really fast. It just changes to automatic. It's
- 20:08Speaker 1: fits something like sixty freaking and then or you could
- 20:12Speaker 1: get the kind of fits like two exactly two. Those
- 20:15Speaker 1: are the real ones, the bad ones. We're driving through
- 20:18Speaker 1: Laurel Canyon Boulevard and which is most one of the
- 20:22Speaker 1: most beautiful parts of l A. I think. And Donald,
- 20:24Speaker 1: you used to live around the corner from here. I did,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and this is where we used to come over and
- 20:29Speaker 1: play poker at your house. And Donald was a bachelor
- 20:32Speaker 1: and he had the most baller house. He had an arcade,
- 20:34Speaker 1: he had a theater. Now, he had he in the
- 20:37Speaker 1: in the living room where there was just a poker
- 20:40Speaker 1: table with arcade games. And Casey moved and he had
- 20:44Speaker 1: his all his all his Star wars Um animation stuff
- 20:47Speaker 1: set up in the dining room, right don't And Casey
- 20:50Speaker 1: moved in. She's like, okay, this is gonna get and
- 20:54Speaker 1: we're taking this. It was the ultimate bachelor pad, like
- 20:57Speaker 1: it was. The whole house was a main cave. Was awesome.
- 21:02Speaker 1: It's a magical yep. I remember, I still love the canyonmen.
- 21:07Speaker 1: If Casey would have said, let's move back, it would
- 21:10Speaker 1: be the happiest day in my life. It's a special place,
- 21:13Speaker 1: special place in my heart. And um one of our
- 21:15Speaker 1: favorite restaurants. UM. We're gonna be passing soon. It's the
- 21:19Speaker 1: only restaurant in Laurel Canyon. UM. And you think one
- 21:23Speaker 1: of the odds that it was a really good restaurant,
- 21:24Speaker 1: But it's this very rustic Italian restaurant that's really good food.
- 21:28Speaker 1: You guysn't ever been there. Out to you, it's amazing,
- 21:33Speaker 1: you know. On a serious note, I've been reading UM
- 21:35Speaker 1: just started. Amanda includes his book a book coming out
- 21:40Speaker 1: she wrote about her story about the insanity of what
- 21:43Speaker 1: happened in Nick. It's called Live Your Life, UM. For
- 21:46Speaker 1: your listeners, if you want to get it. It's on
- 21:48Speaker 1: true Utter now. And I gotta say I was prepared
- 21:51Speaker 1: to read the book and just just I was not
- 21:54Speaker 1: expecting anything. But Amanda's a really good writer, and she
- 21:58Speaker 1: kept such she and her sister kept such journals and
- 22:01Speaker 1: of course all of her communication with all her friends
- 22:05Speaker 1: and family. And it had me like crying yesterday. It's
- 22:10Speaker 1: so beautifully told and so emotional, and it's just so
- 22:14Speaker 1: insane when you think when you look back at the story,
- 22:17Speaker 1: you know, it's it's it's it's you. You just kind
- 22:19Speaker 1: of get used to it. Life goes on. But in
- 22:22Speaker 1: her retelling of the story, it's just so powerful and
- 22:24Speaker 1: it all takes place here, um in um look at that.
- 22:29Speaker 1: So this is the Canyon store right here. Yeah. Yeah,
- 22:32Speaker 1: and I guess they're they're doing a round. There's there's
- 22:34Speaker 1: a thing like a there's a bake off or something
- 22:37Speaker 1: is this, Yeah, this is there, and then underneath right there.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Oh and it's really really really undernea. Yeah. I've seen
- 22:47Speaker 1: that a bunch of times. Never been it's really beautiful
- 22:50Speaker 1: of delicious food. And that used to be the go
- 22:53Speaker 1: to pizza. You wouldn't order from, like you wouldn't order
- 22:56Speaker 1: from any of the other pizza restaurants. You'd order from there.
- 22:59Speaker 1: And like when you moved. When I moved out of
- 23:02Speaker 1: the Canyon and had to get pizza from like other
- 23:04Speaker 1: pizza restaurants, nothing compares, there was something that was just
- 23:08Speaker 1: so good, Like the crust was just right on point.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I think it's the best pizza in l A. Really. Yeah.
- 23:13Speaker 1: I mean it's not not not like it's not like
- 23:15Speaker 1: you know, it's not like New York Street pizza or
- 23:17Speaker 1: like it's like if you like like that that rustic,
- 23:20Speaker 1: it's like a wood fire pizza. Okay, cool, great, I've
- 23:23Speaker 1: been trying a lot more wood fire pizza. So Dary,
- 23:25Speaker 1: you should definitely take your gal there on a date.
- 23:27Speaker 1: It's so romantic, brother, I will not only not only that,
- 23:31Speaker 1: not only that they have a special pizza, Like first
- 23:33Speaker 1: of all, the whole menu was just ridiculously. First of all,
- 23:38Speaker 1: the menu is all healthy, like there's mostly healthy foods
- 23:41Speaker 1: on right, But then every month they have a specialty
- 23:44Speaker 1: pizza and I remember one month it was truffles and
- 23:47Speaker 1: that pizza cost like a hundred stocks. It was delicious.
- 23:55Speaker 1: You know what my restaurant to our friends told me
- 23:57Speaker 1: about truffles. He said that people pay all this money
- 24:01Speaker 1: or the truffles, but that's not only what they want.
- 24:04Speaker 1: What they want is the truffle oil. That's what it was.
- 24:08Speaker 1: But bro, if you're puff bucks, there slice in the truffle.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And he says, it's the biggest scam in the world
- 24:14Speaker 1: because we get in there, you're gonna spoil ourselves to
- 24:16Speaker 1: get the trouble because that's not even the taste that
- 24:18Speaker 1: you like. The taste you like is the oil, which
- 24:23Speaker 1: are there you go, I've given you hot tip. I
- 24:27Speaker 1: got another hot all right, listen, y'all, this has nothing
- 24:32Speaker 1: to do with driving around l in the car. But
- 24:34Speaker 1: I get another tip. Do if you have a house
- 24:39Speaker 1: and there's birds shipping all over your deck or your
- 24:43Speaker 1: porch or your yard, and you're like so frustrated that
- 24:47Speaker 1: it's covered with bird poop, I got you. You gonna
- 24:52Speaker 1: come clean and hook I will come email, I will
- 24:59Speaker 1: come with a our washroom. No, you go on the
- 25:02Speaker 1: interwebs and you buy a yellow tailed hawk decoy. Do
- 25:08Speaker 1: not get the owl that you sometimes see, because birds
- 25:11Speaker 1: know that owls are nocturnal and they don't give a
- 25:15Speaker 1: crop no pun intended. You get a yellow yellow tailed
- 25:20Speaker 1: hawk decoy and you put it out there. You gotta
- 25:23Speaker 1: put a little weights in it because that wise the
- 25:25Speaker 1: wind blows it over. I've done the testing for you. Okay,
- 25:29Speaker 1: fill it up with some old coins. There you go,
- 25:35Speaker 1: very okay, This this hawk probably cast fifteen bucks on Amazon.
- 25:39Speaker 1: You're gonna fill it with some pennies. Bam. Birds are
- 25:42Speaker 1: like I that I'm not going there's a freaking hawk there.
- 25:46Speaker 1: You think I'm gonna sit there and poop solves it
- 25:49Speaker 1: like that that is your pro tip from Zach Rathabo.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I can't believe it works. Yeah, Daniel, put it a
- 25:55Speaker 1: little dun dun dune, I got you. You can't afford
- 25:58Speaker 1: that we can use dun dun dune. Then we've done
- 26:03Speaker 1: it a bunch of times, all right, if we can
- 26:06Speaker 1: a couple of times yet. I wish we could put
- 26:10Speaker 1: on some music in the two songs, but we can't
- 26:12Speaker 1: write it, so maybe we should just like, oh man,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I could get on that. What did you learned the
- 26:23Speaker 1: melody from from the song I wrote for you for
- 26:26Speaker 1: Case's entrance music? No Er, Sorry, you gotta put that down, thow.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I need you to put it down. If you don't
- 26:32Speaker 1: put it down, I'm gonna put it down. Why don't
- 26:34Speaker 1: you call Why don't you call up Charlie Poof? No? Okay, no,
- 26:40Speaker 1: actually I think we u we have probably used our
- 26:42Speaker 1: one favorite with Charlie. Charlie's like y'all, Motherfucker's got the
- 26:45Speaker 1: hottest freaking podcast opening song in the history of podcasts
- 26:50Speaker 1: opening songs. You want what you want? What now? Charlie's
- 26:55Speaker 1: got another song on the radio heard that's really good.
- 26:57Speaker 1: It's Charlie Poos huge but he had a new single.
- 27:01Speaker 1: I was bopping too, and sometimes I put on just
- 27:03Speaker 1: like hits one on serious and you get all that
- 27:07Speaker 1: Olivia Rodrigo, he's all over the place. She's all over
- 27:11Speaker 1: the place, So we don't the baby saved her. I'm sorry.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Her music was. Her music was straight euro club seeing
- 27:26Speaker 1: type stuff with the baby and then baby guests on it,
- 27:30Speaker 1: and now all of a sudden she got urban hits.
- 27:32Speaker 1: In my opinion, Daniel, I know you like that ship,
- 27:34Speaker 1: but that ship was straight up freaking marshmallow DJ and
- 27:38Speaker 1: that ship. Yeah, I mean, Daniel, you like that ship
- 27:42Speaker 1: shallow b Jake. Alright, So we're pulling into the Hollywood area.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Now there are is this the school temple is okay?
- 27:55Speaker 1: So Donald, tell us about your we're kind of from So.
- 27:58Speaker 1: When I first moved to Lost Angeles, you know, people
- 28:01Speaker 1: ask me where do you want to live? And I said,
- 28:02Speaker 1: I want to live in Hollywood because I thought Hollywood
- 28:04Speaker 1: was where all the stars lived. I learned really quick,
- 28:10Speaker 1: they do not live here. You're a star, you can
- 28:13Speaker 1: afford to not live in Hollywood. The billboard for the show.
- 28:16Speaker 1: I've been telling you all to watch both Burnhams and stuff.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Oh inside yeah, I sent you that video. Did you
- 28:21Speaker 1: watch it? I did not? Oh my god, you're the
- 28:23Speaker 1: worst friend I have. I'm not the worst friend. What
- 28:26Speaker 1: kind of friend you? If I send you a YouTube
- 28:28Speaker 1: link and you don't click the link? Why are we friends?
- 28:34Speaker 1: I need new friends though. Please. I have offriended my
- 28:38Speaker 1: brother Zachary. If you're should if you're with me and you,
- 28:42Speaker 1: if you're a listener and you are willing to click
- 28:45Speaker 1: on links that I send you that are funny, will
- 28:46Speaker 1: you please email Joel because I need new friends. Everybody
- 28:51Speaker 1: just flooded Joel's email. You just flooded. There already many
- 28:56Speaker 1: people trying to pick you up on that. I had
- 28:57Speaker 1: people signing to my dam's like, yo, bro, I watched
- 28:59Speaker 1: Solos it was awesome. Can I be your friend? Or
- 29:07Speaker 1: that I reposted Josh rayden um because he posted on
- 29:10Speaker 1: Instagram and they're like, at least one of your friends
- 29:12Speaker 1: watch a lot of things. I want to put that
- 29:17Speaker 1: episode on early so I can be like, we watched it. Everybody,
- 29:19Speaker 1: chill everyone, m we didn't you did? So one of
- 29:24Speaker 1: my went to that gym from one time? One time?
- 29:27Speaker 1: One time? No, no, not, that's not that's not. That's
- 29:30Speaker 1: the one that's okay, I don't know. I went there once,
- 29:34Speaker 1: so I learned really quickly, very early, that you know,
- 29:37Speaker 1: stars don't live here, and that this is actually the hood. Well,
- 29:42Speaker 1: I don't know if it's the hood. It's just a
- 29:44Speaker 1: rougher part of town. My man I had it was
- 29:48Speaker 1: me terror Read, uh, Damon from the Mickey Mouse. The
- 29:53Speaker 1: shot of the Los Angeles Public Library isn't very good.
- 29:56Speaker 1: It's not great, but you know this is exactly where
- 29:58Speaker 1: I live. Oh my god, look at the Oh my god. Anyway, me,
- 30:05Speaker 1: Damon terror Read and a couple of other people, we're
- 30:10Speaker 1: in my apartment, which is right here. Maybe pull in
- 30:15Speaker 1: front of here, it is right. That was that one
- 30:21Speaker 1: right there with all those flowers. That was my balcony
- 30:24Speaker 1: a hot tub right there. Also, Um, you told us
- 30:27Speaker 1: before months in the podcast. But you used to have
- 30:28Speaker 1: like bashes here, right. I used to throw a lot
- 30:30Speaker 1: of parties. So I threw one huge party here and
- 30:33Speaker 1: then but the landlord, but the dude above me, I've
- 30:38Speaker 1: made sure. I went around and invited everybody in the
- 30:40Speaker 1: building to the party, and most of them came. The
- 30:42Speaker 1: landlord came who lived up there, like pretty much everybody
- 30:46Speaker 1: came through. The dude that lived above me I was
- 30:48Speaker 1: warned about. They were like, listen, he's kind of a dick,
- 30:52Speaker 1: so you know, he'll say yeah, I'm cool with it,
- 30:57Speaker 1: and then he'll call the police on you. He's that
- 30:59Speaker 1: type of person. So I've made sure to invite him
- 31:02Speaker 1: to the party. I was like, why don't you come through?
- 31:04Speaker 1: He was like, I'd love to thank you. We throw
- 31:07Speaker 1: the party. He comes knocking on the door and he's like, Donald,
- 31:11Speaker 1: it is too loud. I was like, wait a second,
- 31:14Speaker 1: I told you, why don't you come through? You? You know,
- 31:17Speaker 1: I invited you to the thing. Why don't you just
- 31:18Speaker 1: come and have fun? And like people, there were a
- 31:20Speaker 1: lot of people at the party, Like I invited everybody
- 31:23Speaker 1: from Sabrina the Teenage, which because we were all on
- 31:25Speaker 1: the same lot, they showed up. I invited everybody from
- 31:27Speaker 1: Moitia because we were on the same lot. They showed up. Yeah,
- 31:31Speaker 1: it was a real It was like one of those
- 31:32Speaker 1: things where I was like, yo, dude, I got it
- 31:34Speaker 1: is target rich in Hollywood right now, dude, Like they
- 31:38Speaker 1: say that the stars don't live here, were they up
- 31:41Speaker 1: in this month? Right now? It was on fire right
- 31:46Speaker 1: and he goes it's too loud and I want you
- 31:49Speaker 1: to shut it down. You're like, I got Sabrina the teenage, Like, listen,
- 31:53Speaker 1: don't sitting right there Brandy in the house. No, Brandy
- 31:57Speaker 1: didn't come to lammt bently, God rest his soul. One
- 32:00Speaker 1: of my dudes, Uh, he came through. He always came
- 32:03Speaker 1: through like he would. He would come and hang out
- 32:04Speaker 1: all the time because we filmed on the Paramount lot,
- 32:07Speaker 1: so a lot of the people that did you know,
- 32:09Speaker 1: if you were an extra on the show, or you know,
- 32:12Speaker 1: if you were or if you were on other shows,
- 32:15Speaker 1: you would come through to my house to hang out
- 32:18Speaker 1: because I was so close and I was a cool dude,
- 32:20Speaker 1: right And when he kicked he I had. I first
- 32:24Speaker 1: tried to do this. I was like, everybody, let's just
- 32:26Speaker 1: keep it down. That doesn't work, and that didn't This
- 32:34Speaker 1: is the kind of complex where if they're not down,
- 32:36Speaker 1: they're gonna be pissed because you're all right on top
- 32:39Speaker 1: and so and I remember I Chris Kilmore, the DJ
- 32:43Speaker 1: for Incubus, was supposed to DJ. This is before he
- 32:47Speaker 1: was a deep like he was a dude. I'm keeping
- 32:50Speaker 1: one hundred Chris, and you noticed I love you. But
- 32:52Speaker 1: when he first started, he was the worst DJ, like
- 32:56Speaker 1: he couldn't he couldn't find the beat to save his life.
- 32:59Speaker 1: And I used to go over to his house and
- 33:01Speaker 1: he used to hang out with this girl, Ausha, who
- 33:03Speaker 1: is an actress also but and so we we that's
- 33:07Speaker 1: who I used to run with, right, and I was like,
- 33:09Speaker 1: you DJ to party and he was like, I's like
- 33:11Speaker 1: I don't. I don't got that much money. Could pay
- 33:13Speaker 1: fifty bucks. He shows up after the dude tells me
- 33:16Speaker 1: to keep it down and it's like, I want you
- 33:19Speaker 1: to kick everybody out. He comes in with his big
- 33:21Speaker 1: buck speakers and everything like that. Ready, he's so late
- 33:25Speaker 1: and I'm like, dude, I like two and a half
- 33:27Speaker 1: hours late. Chris. It's like I'm sorry, bro, I'm sorry.
- 33:31Speaker 1: And I was like, well, I don't know that point
- 33:39Speaker 1: DJ for a little bit and then I'll take the
- 33:41Speaker 1: mail tomorrow. It reminds me of your wedding when we
- 33:45Speaker 1: had at my house. I don't know if I told
- 33:46Speaker 1: the story not, but I went around all the close neighbors.
- 33:50Speaker 1: I think I gave him gift baskets, wrote very sweet notes,
- 33:53Speaker 1: and this lady put in my mailbox Staple on the
- 33:56Speaker 1: other side of the sweet note I had written. She
- 33:59Speaker 1: flipped it over had written in block handwriting, I will
- 34:03Speaker 1: be calling the police the second I'm disturbed. And then
- 34:06Speaker 1: she stapled the local noise ordinance rules to piece of
- 34:10Speaker 1: paper and put it back from my mailbox. Jerk, I
- 34:13Speaker 1: don't understand how you can't like suspend your comfortableness for like.
- 34:17Speaker 1: And then, by the way, a night, this woman they
- 34:19Speaker 1: came to set up a tent for Donald's wedding. She
- 34:21Speaker 1: called the police on them hitting the fucking steaks into
- 34:24Speaker 1: the ground. The police are not your personal security for
- 34:29Speaker 1: it's just like a waste of waste of got to
- 34:33Speaker 1: come out up to a complaint about hammering a steak
- 34:37Speaker 1: in the ground. I missed this place, man, we used
- 34:40Speaker 1: to have. There was another dude that lived here who
- 34:42Speaker 1: worked in like in that Brother's arm whatever. That World
- 34:47Speaker 1: War two movie he was on that that was his.
- 34:52Speaker 1: He hadn't done it yet, but so he was just
- 34:54Speaker 1: starting to. He moved to Hollywood the same reason way
- 34:57Speaker 1: I did. And uh, several year a few years later,
- 35:01Speaker 1: banda Brothers came out and he was one of the
- 35:03Speaker 1: leads on it. Let's sake, we'll be right back after
- 35:06Speaker 1: these fine words. All right, So now we're gonna go
- 35:15Speaker 1: to my the first place I stayed when I was
- 35:18Speaker 1: in Los Angeles. Now you stayed here, Now what was
- 35:20Speaker 1: your deal? You moved here? I remember you moving here
- 35:24Speaker 1: with a girl is there? Let me tell you the story. Um,
- 35:28Speaker 1: I went to Sundance for the very first time, and
- 35:30Speaker 1: I like fell madly in love with a woman that
- 35:33Speaker 1: I met at Sundance. And she was the prettiest woman
- 35:38Speaker 1: I had ever met. And she at the time, and
- 35:41Speaker 1: she was just so cool and it was so exciting.
- 35:43Speaker 1: What did she do for a living? She worked, um,
- 35:46Speaker 1: the Disney lot for a producer. And I didn't have
- 35:52Speaker 1: a car, I didn't have a dime. So I was
- 35:55Speaker 1: in a movie, my first great part called Gay you
- 35:58Speaker 1: Know You, with Michael West and and Heather moder Razzo,
- 36:01Speaker 1: and we went to Sundance, which is a big deal.
- 36:05Speaker 1: And while there I met this woman and she was
- 36:06Speaker 1: just I was just like drop jog and we really
- 36:10Speaker 1: hit it off. But she was here and I was
- 36:12Speaker 1: in New York and we were gonna try and do
- 36:14Speaker 1: the long distance thing and and um, so she lived
- 36:20Speaker 1: in this house with two other guys. One was an actor,
- 36:23Speaker 1: and one eventually became a very successful agent. But they
- 36:27Speaker 1: were like, you know, all roommates in this duplex and um,
- 36:32Speaker 1: and it was really I I came out here with
- 36:35Speaker 1: with no money. It was really stressful because I just
- 36:37Speaker 1: didn't I wanted to I wanted to like impress her
- 36:40Speaker 1: and have her stay interested in me, but I just
- 36:42Speaker 1: had no money. I had didn't have a car, I
- 36:45Speaker 1: didn't have a cell phone. This was like right at
- 36:47Speaker 1: the beginning of cell phones, and I certainly couldn't afford one,
- 36:50Speaker 1: and so I and she was like living in the
- 36:53Speaker 1: small back room like I think this one day was
- 36:56Speaker 1: probably like the maids quarters back in the day of
- 36:58Speaker 1: the house. It was like, I swear to you it was.
- 37:00Speaker 1: She was Invincent's quarters. She was Invincent's quarters. It was
- 37:03Speaker 1: like her bedroom. I'm not exaggerating. Her bedroom was basically
- 37:07Speaker 1: the size of a king sized bed and she had
- 37:10Speaker 1: like a double bed in there, and we crammed in there.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I had nowhere to put my stuff, so I would
- 37:16Speaker 1: like and I did. I was so worried that her
- 37:19Speaker 1: fellow roommates would be mad because I was like there
- 37:22Speaker 1: without without paying any rent. And they certainly were not
- 37:26Speaker 1: too into it um at all understood. I don't know
- 37:32Speaker 1: if you ever been in that position, but like, I
- 37:33Speaker 1: was trying to hide where my clothes were, and I
- 37:37Speaker 1: remember one of the roommates came in, he was actually
- 37:40Speaker 1: paying rent, and he was like, yeah, that spot where
- 37:43Speaker 1: you're keeping your clothes and I was like yeah, he goes, yeah,
- 37:46Speaker 1: my girlfriend's gonna need to have that spot for her clothes.
- 37:49Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, okay, So I pulled all
- 37:53Speaker 1: my clothes out of that one little spot I found,
- 37:55Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, the next day, all
- 37:57Speaker 1: her closer. She took my nook, she took up, she
- 38:02Speaker 1: took my clothes up. That dude, that dude's kind of
- 38:04Speaker 1: a bitch though for saying that ship well, but I
- 38:06Speaker 1: mean putting yourself into his position. He was paying the
- 38:09Speaker 1: most random sure, because he had the nicest room. And
- 38:11Speaker 1: here I am this guy, I'm using his house, I'm
- 38:15Speaker 1: using his kitchen, I'm you know, I'm in his space
- 38:18Speaker 1: and I'm not paying any rent. Yeah, but neither was
- 38:20Speaker 1: his girl. I know, but he probably justified like, yeah,
- 38:22Speaker 1: but I don't care, I'm paying rent, you're not. I
- 38:25Speaker 1: don't know. Anyway, he's a nice guy. But I'm sure
- 38:28Speaker 1: he is a nice guy, but that was I remember
- 38:31Speaker 1: him telling me like one time, this is the kind
- 38:33Speaker 1: of guy he was. He is a lovely guy actually,
- 38:35Speaker 1: but but I think his tensions for having me in
- 38:37Speaker 1: the house were growing. And he opened the fridge and
- 38:39Speaker 1: I was in the kitchen. He goes, who He's putting
- 38:43Speaker 1: low traffic items in the high traffic spot of the refrigerator,
- 38:48Speaker 1: and I was like, what He's like, there was no
- 38:51Speaker 1: need for this mayonnaise to be at the forefront, in
- 38:55Speaker 1: the middle shelf. It is not used often. It needs
- 38:59Speaker 1: to go in the back, like like, well, you can
- 39:05Speaker 1: fix that yourself. The energy Also, I think a few
- 39:09Speaker 1: times like I didn't know where to poop because I
- 39:10Speaker 1: knew wanted proving her bathroom right, because then you're embarrassed
- 39:13Speaker 1: that you dunk it up, right. So then I would
- 39:15Speaker 1: when those guys were and I would go and poop
- 39:18Speaker 1: in their backs, but they but they didn't have the
- 39:22Speaker 1: toilet brushes, and sometimes I would leave a few streaks.
- 39:28Speaker 1: I remember her home. So my girlfriend calls me. She's like,
- 39:31Speaker 1: hey's just talking about something. I'm like, you never want
- 39:33Speaker 1: to hear that. She's like, um, some of the guys
- 39:35Speaker 1: are saying that you're streaking up their bowl might as well.
- 39:44Speaker 1: It was so embarrassing anxiety. Ever since then, I always
- 39:51Speaker 1: make sure that there's a tweather brush ready in case
- 39:54Speaker 1: streaks we are about to take. Many a night, when
- 39:58Speaker 1: drunk out of my mom before I got home Pinks,
- 40:02Speaker 1: Oh my gods, hot dogs, I always wondered, who's who's
- 40:05Speaker 1: lining up for Pinks? That was you've never had a
- 40:09Speaker 1: Pinks out? That was the delicious. They do a number
- 40:11Speaker 1: on your stomach too. But when I talk to the
- 40:14Speaker 1: Golden Apple Comic bookstore, the yea, I used to go
- 40:17Speaker 1: there too, So if you're not from l A, this
- 40:20Speaker 1: is a very popular tourist location which was closed for COVID,
- 40:23Speaker 1: but I was clearly back open. Oh yeah, they're they're
- 40:25Speaker 1: open open. It's Pinks hot Dogs. People line up. This
- 40:28Speaker 1: line is like very long. I didn't know the hot
- 40:30Speaker 1: dogs were happy. So one time Pink's Hot Dog did
- 40:33Speaker 1: a thing on scrubs and they let me have a
- 40:37Speaker 1: bunch of like if something like more than I could
- 40:40Speaker 1: possibly use before they would perish. And I remember being like, dude,
- 40:46Speaker 1: I got Pinks hot Dogs for days because I used
- 40:48Speaker 1: to love this place, and the people that came to
- 40:50Speaker 1: set remember me to check this out. But the lead
- 40:53Speaker 1: vehicle is driving away that in case you weren't paying attention,
- 40:59Speaker 1: like go and also look at that. It lets you know.
- 41:02Speaker 1: It calculates your attention level, and it's tell it's telling
- 41:06Speaker 1: Donald that his attention level is high. And it has
- 41:08Speaker 1: a little icond of coffee. That's so funny. I wonder
- 41:13Speaker 1: what it looks like when you're not bidding from the road.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I have yet to experience that one because I am
- 41:22Speaker 1: a very good driver's accrap and I can see that.
- 41:24Speaker 1: But it also this is also cool. The Tucson tells
- 41:27Speaker 1: you when your last break from driving was. That's wild.
- 41:30Speaker 1: So Donald, we've stopped for outside his apartment, so it
- 41:33Speaker 1: says it's been six minutes since his last breaks wild.
- 41:36Speaker 1: That's really that's a lot of attention to safety. Be
- 41:39Speaker 1: like you're going to the left lane, yes, look at
- 41:43Speaker 1: the camera comes up you guys see, Donalds won't hurt us.
- 41:49Speaker 1: I would like it if the Tucson told us it's
- 41:51Speaker 1: been six hands cold, told us it's been six minutes
- 41:55Speaker 1: since your last group to your friends. So cold. And
- 42:01Speaker 1: then there's like an icon of like a sad face
- 42:03Speaker 1: that comes. I haven't rubbed your friend? Alright, alright, so um,
- 42:12Speaker 1: so I come out here and um, she lived fortunately
- 42:15Speaker 1: next to a Ralph's that we're going to pass if
- 42:17Speaker 1: you're not from an l A Ralph's is a very
- 42:18Speaker 1: popular supermarket and the way before Subway had the five
- 42:23Speaker 1: dollar foot long, Ralph's sold a giant sub that you
- 42:27Speaker 1: could have made. It would cost five bucks. And I
- 42:29Speaker 1: couldn't believe this. It was too good to be true
- 42:31Speaker 1: because I knew for five bucks I could have lunch
- 42:33Speaker 1: and dinner and um, and that's how I would eat
- 42:38Speaker 1: because I just I didn't have I didn't have a job.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Just cold cuts all day long. Well yeah, cold cuts
- 42:43Speaker 1: for lunch, cold cuts for dinner. What would you do
- 42:46Speaker 1: with the breakfast relationship? Skip breakfast? And that is why
- 42:52Speaker 1: was streaky buddy? Cold cuts? And god, um yeah, you're right. Okay,
- 43:06Speaker 1: So what happened? So I started to relationships started to
- 43:08Speaker 1: get really stressful because um, I hold on, they're gonna
- 43:14Speaker 1: make a left here on the second. Oh my god,
- 43:16Speaker 1: I really I'm gonna get emotional. I have not been
- 43:18Speaker 1: back here in been um since like two thousands. Welcome
- 43:26Speaker 1: back and it's in the same city. That's how big
- 43:29Speaker 1: l A is. By the way, you cannot go by
- 43:31Speaker 1: and by where you guys broke up. So yeah, so
- 43:35Speaker 1: I'll so. So basically I couldn't operate. You can't operate
- 43:39Speaker 1: in l A without a card. This is before Uber. Obviously,
- 43:40Speaker 1: now with Uber you can, but it's very hard to operate.
- 43:43Speaker 1: It was very hard to operate, um And so what
- 43:46Speaker 1: I would do is I would get up in the
- 43:48Speaker 1: morning and I would drive her to work. She worked
- 43:50Speaker 1: on the Disney lot, which we're gonna end with because
- 43:52Speaker 1: that's where you and I had some of our final
- 43:54Speaker 1: auditions for Scrubs. So I would get up, drive her
- 43:59Speaker 1: to work, and then i'd have the car to go
- 44:02Speaker 1: on audition or to you know, do a couple of things.
- 44:06Speaker 1: But with l A traffic, I didn't have that much
- 44:08Speaker 1: time before I had to pick her up a fun
- 44:10Speaker 1: yeah you know what I mean. Like, I certainly couldn't
- 44:12Speaker 1: be linked to three because she would scream at me.
- 44:14Speaker 1: So I had to I had to calculate the day, right,
- 44:18Speaker 1: because if I was going to have two auditions and
- 44:21Speaker 1: then like shower and like you know, do a handful,
- 44:23Speaker 1: maybe maybe work out I had to like then head
- 44:27Speaker 1: back to the valley to go to the couple more
- 44:30Speaker 1: blocks will be Yeah, I think it's the next block. Also,
- 44:32Speaker 1: there's a big Orthodox Jewish community over here because they
- 44:36Speaker 1: a lot of the Orthodox she was live here because
- 44:38Speaker 1: they can on the Sabbath when they don't drive, and
- 44:39Speaker 1: they can walk to their synagogues. Yeah, you beautiful neighbor.
- 44:44Speaker 1: This is like almost Hancock Park. It's a big difference
- 44:47Speaker 1: between my experience first experience here in your first well again, yeah, yeah,
- 44:53Speaker 1: but you sound like you had a smidgin more fun
- 44:54Speaker 1: than I did. Yeah, I was like doing CPR. Were
- 44:59Speaker 1: hard broken. So anyway, the relationship started getting really stressful
- 45:04Speaker 1: because she was never pleased with me, and I didn't
- 45:07Speaker 1: have any money, and we would like drive by a
- 45:08Speaker 1: billboard for something exciting, and she was like, oh, I
- 45:11Speaker 1: want to go see that, and I was just thinking,
- 45:14Speaker 1: like what am I supposed to say here? Like I
- 45:17Speaker 1: can't take you to that I can't afford. And I
- 45:19Speaker 1: started getting really insecure, because you know, she was she
- 45:25Speaker 1: was sort of increasing her resentment of me because I
- 45:28Speaker 1: couldn't do things. And I said the honest things like
- 45:31Speaker 1: if you want to do that, you can pay for
- 45:33Speaker 1: us to do that, but I I can't and I'm
- 45:36Speaker 1: so sorry I can't do that for you, but I
- 45:38Speaker 1: and she would kind of just roll her eyes and
- 45:42Speaker 1: it was really tricky, and I started. This is when
- 45:44Speaker 1: I started. I've never really spoke about this, but I
- 45:45Speaker 1: started getting panic attacks. Have you read a panic attack? Yeah,
- 45:50Speaker 1: like the time we have to be on the floor
- 45:52Speaker 1: and just it is the scariest thing. You're falling on
- 45:56Speaker 1: a roller coaster, you know. For me, it's imagine your
- 45:59Speaker 1: LUNGSTI eating up and you just can't get air now,
- 46:02Speaker 1: and then you're then so you're you're human self that
- 46:06Speaker 1: your adrenaline spikes because you think you're dying, and then
- 46:08Speaker 1: you start this loop in your head like I had
- 46:10Speaker 1: to call on amuals. I can't breathe, my lungs aren't
- 46:11Speaker 1: working long and then that makes you the long conic
- 46:14Speaker 1: and then it just circles and circles, and you think
- 46:18Speaker 1: you're dying. And especially the first time it happens, if
- 46:23Speaker 1: it's never happening before, you just can't get aaron your
- 46:27Speaker 1: lungs and you think you gotta call Amiultstaus you're dying.
- 46:30Speaker 1: What's happened is happening, so freaking scary. And that started
- 46:32Speaker 1: happening because of my my anxiety of being in this relationship.
- 46:37Speaker 1: And I'm not putting it all on the woman. It's
- 46:39Speaker 1: not all her responsibility. I was, I was, but you
- 46:42Speaker 1: were broken, Hollywood man, and you came out here because
- 46:45Speaker 1: of her, thinking that that that would save the relationship.
- 46:50Speaker 1: And and it didn't because when I got out of here,
- 46:52Speaker 1: the pressures were so strong, and I remember I was
- 46:54Speaker 1: doing homesick and I was calling, um, would you go
- 46:58Speaker 1: back to Jersey after that? So I was out here
- 47:00Speaker 1: and I would call on the landline. I would call
- 47:03Speaker 1: on her land line. Again. I didn't ever sell yet.
- 47:05Speaker 1: And she had a cell, I remember, and it was
- 47:07Speaker 1: sort of like it was a time when it was
- 47:08Speaker 1: kind of fancy to have a self and and she
- 47:12Speaker 1: would give it to me during the day, but I
- 47:13Speaker 1: didn't want to use it because it was expensive. But
- 47:15Speaker 1: I would call my family and friends on her land line.
- 47:17Speaker 1: And remember she got her landline long distance bill and
- 47:20Speaker 1: she was like, what is this and I think it
- 47:22Speaker 1: was like a hundred bucks or something, and I was like, oh,
- 47:25Speaker 1: I just you know, a bit homesick, just checking over Google.
- 47:28Speaker 1: She's like well, that's a lot of money. You should
- 47:30Speaker 1: you should reimburse me for this. And I was like, okay, yeah,
- 47:33Speaker 1: you're right, I'm sorry. So I remember I was giving
- 47:36Speaker 1: her the money for the landline usage. How are you
- 47:39Speaker 1: paying her from that when you had no money? That
- 47:41Speaker 1: turned tricks. I also never talked about this at the
- 47:51Speaker 1: Ralphs around the UM so UM. So then what happened
- 47:57Speaker 1: after that happed? So so we ended the relationship obviously,
- 48:00Speaker 1: it was just it was it was not healthy for
- 48:02Speaker 1: either one of us. And and then I moved in
- 48:05Speaker 1: with Michael Weston, UM, and I got it. I got
- 48:08Speaker 1: a job together. Yeah, Michael Weston and I did the
- 48:11Speaker 1: movie together. UM. And then I called an old friend
- 48:17Speaker 1: who was no. I didn't know Blania Banta. You guys
- 48:22Speaker 1: worked in college together, right. I knew it was an
- 48:24Speaker 1: acquaintance in college, but it wasn't until Broken Hearts Club
- 48:27Speaker 1: where the audition, where we got reacquainted and we became
- 48:31Speaker 1: friendly again. But so what happened The next place we're
- 48:34Speaker 1: gonna go to is UM where I waited tables. I
- 48:37Speaker 1: called an old friend. I had never waited on a
- 48:39Speaker 1: table in my life, but I knew there was a
- 48:42Speaker 1: hot there was a very hot restaurant in town called
- 48:44Speaker 1: Look Colonial. It was a French Vietnamese restaurant, and I
- 48:47Speaker 1: just happened to know a friend of my old friend
- 48:49Speaker 1: of mine was the manager. And I called her and
- 48:52Speaker 1: I said, look, I need your help. I have never
- 48:54Speaker 1: waited on the table, and I know this is a
- 48:56Speaker 1: very fancy restaurant, but I'm a bit destitute. I really
- 48:59Speaker 1: need a job. Please help me. And she did. She
- 49:04Speaker 1: brought me on. She said, you're gonna have to fake
- 49:08Speaker 1: it till you make it because I don't know anything.
- 49:10Speaker 1: I didn't know how to use the computers. I didn't
- 49:12Speaker 1: know anything. And she, this woman really saved me and
- 49:16Speaker 1: I got a job at the restaurant. And and that's
- 49:19Speaker 1: when that's a good movie right there in itself too though,
- 49:24Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like that's like Swingers kind
- 49:26Speaker 1: of where you know you come, but every everybody's story
- 49:30Speaker 1: is very familiar to Swingers. That was what made that
- 49:32Speaker 1: movie so amazing. But it's like you move out to
- 49:35Speaker 1: Hollywood to become something that you dream about, and they
- 49:40Speaker 1: don't tell you about the crazy stuff that goes on
- 49:44Speaker 1: before that all happens. They don't tell you about being
- 49:47Speaker 1: broke and living in your girlfriend's house with two dickheads
- 49:50Speaker 1: who want you out, you know what I mean. They
- 49:52Speaker 1: don't tell you about a landlord or a fucking neighbor
- 49:56Speaker 1: who just wants to make your life a living hell.
- 49:59Speaker 1: They don't tell you about no dough and how it's
- 50:02Speaker 1: really hard to eat out here when you don't have money,
- 50:05Speaker 1: and yeah, there's always a light at the end of
- 50:08Speaker 1: the tunnel. Uh. You know, for me, it was for me,
- 50:12Speaker 1: it was clueless. For you, it was your friend that
- 50:14Speaker 1: worked at that was a manager at a restaurant. This
- 50:16Speaker 1: woman I'll never forget she saved me and she, um,
- 50:20Speaker 1: she put me on. And if y'all remember the opening
- 50:23Speaker 1: scene of Garden State or the opening sequence where I'm
- 50:27Speaker 1: working in a French Vietmese restaurant, I was all based
- 50:29Speaker 1: on this real life experience. I already did put it
- 50:32Speaker 1: in a movie. Um yeah, but um, it was very
- 50:36Speaker 1: hard time because I I had never I was dealing with.
- 50:39Speaker 1: When even started attacks, it's it's like You're like, is
- 50:42Speaker 1: this going to be a part of my life? Like
- 50:43Speaker 1: how do I get this under control? And I really
- 50:46Speaker 1: had to start seeing the therapist to to start tackling
- 50:48Speaker 1: it because basically my anxiety kind of it's kind of
- 50:52Speaker 1: like the dam breaks and your anxiety reaches a point
- 50:55Speaker 1: for some people, I'm one of them, where you it's
- 51:00Speaker 1: like the damn broke. Like panic attacks are are are
- 51:03Speaker 1: a possibility now if you if you dip into red,
- 51:08Speaker 1: that's all you need is that little bit of a
- 51:11Speaker 1: little bit of a panic like one panic attack, and
- 51:14Speaker 1: then you'll have them for the rest of your life.
- 51:15Speaker 1: That's why it goes well, No, you just first of all,
- 51:17Speaker 1: you know how to prevent it from happening. You also
- 51:19Speaker 1: know how to handle it when it does happen. Um,
- 51:22Speaker 1: you gain a whole tool chest that you didn't have.
- 51:25Speaker 1: But it's like if you think about a car needle
- 51:27Speaker 1: going into red all of a sudden, it's like you
- 51:30Speaker 1: break through and there and you realize that that is
- 51:32Speaker 1: a possibility that that can happen to you, and so
- 51:34Speaker 1: you need to manage it, just like your car manages
- 51:37Speaker 1: changing gears. Right, Well, I mean you must have some
- 51:40Speaker 1: experience with this. Yeah, it would happen to me when
- 51:42Speaker 1: I was very broke, and I very similarly like came
- 51:46Speaker 1: out here also with five thousand dollars, which is strange yeah,
- 51:50Speaker 1: it was what was left over from the way. For
- 51:51Speaker 1: those of you listening, don't try to move to l
- 51:53Speaker 1: A with five grand. Now. It was done in like
- 51:59Speaker 1: six lasted six months. I didn't last that long. It
- 52:05Speaker 1: was very It was very chaotic and horrible, and I
- 52:08Speaker 1: was broke but fortunate enough to work in an industry
- 52:10Speaker 1: that was constantly shipping me around the world to cover
- 52:13Speaker 1: different events. But it was like my first time being
- 52:15Speaker 1: out on my own and it was a lot of
- 52:17Speaker 1: new things. But also when I landed, I didn't have
- 52:19Speaker 1: any money, so I was like, where are you feeding
- 52:21Speaker 1: the journalists? Like we have bagels here. I will eat
- 52:24Speaker 1: four bagels and that won't be like breakfast and lunch
- 52:26Speaker 1: and then we'll figure out dinner later. And so yeah.
- 52:29Speaker 1: When I was at uh TIP, which is Toronto International
- 52:32Speaker 1: Film Festival, I had been having like small panic attacks
- 52:35Speaker 1: where it's like, okay, I can I can just really
- 52:37Speaker 1: breathe and work on it and get through it. But
- 52:40Speaker 1: I had overbooked myself and I was doing red carpets
- 52:43Speaker 1: for like the second time in my life, and those
- 52:44Speaker 1: are very stressful as a journalist, and uh I had
- 52:48Speaker 1: a pang attack so bad. I had to like I
- 52:51Speaker 1: didn't know where I wasn't or how I was gonna
- 52:52Speaker 1: get back to my place, and I didn't have any money,
- 52:54Speaker 1: and I was like I couldn't inhale And luckily my
- 52:57Speaker 1: friend was like, well, my hotel is like two blocks away.
- 53:00Speaker 1: You make it. And I was like, just get me there.
- 53:02Speaker 1: We'll find out what happens. We got there, I just
- 53:04Speaker 1: lay on the floor and I just curled him into
- 53:06Speaker 1: the veto position. And luckily she has so many things,
- 53:09Speaker 1: so can she give me a counpin or something? And
- 53:11Speaker 1: that just knocked me out. It was so bad, like
- 53:14Speaker 1: they are. I wouldn't wish paying attacks on my worst enemy.
- 53:16Speaker 1: They just come out of nowhere and they're so debilitating.
- 53:19Speaker 1: But zex right, like once you get your tool kit
- 53:22Speaker 1: in order and you know, like, okay, it's happening, I
- 53:25Speaker 1: know how to work through it. Also, you're not gonna
- 53:27Speaker 1: die once once you have once your brain goes no,
- 53:30Speaker 1: you won't die from this, like calm down, um. But
- 53:33Speaker 1: the first time it happened, I remember I was in
- 53:34Speaker 1: a theater and I was sitting next to Oh, this
- 53:39Speaker 1: is crazy, but I was sitting next to my acting professor,
- 53:43Speaker 1: David Downs, and I was taking. I had taken him
- 53:45Speaker 1: to see a play that I had seen in New
- 53:46Speaker 1: York and I really liked, and I wanted to show
- 53:48Speaker 1: it to him because it was it was a production
- 53:50Speaker 1: out here. Production out here was a totally different cast,
- 53:52Speaker 1: and it was not nearly as good. And we're sitting
- 53:54Speaker 1: in the audience, and I just I felt embarrassed. I
- 53:57Speaker 1: wanted to impress him that I had found a play.
- 54:00Speaker 1: He was like my my mentor that I that he
- 54:02Speaker 1: would really like. And he's one of those guys. My
- 54:05Speaker 1: dad was the same way, like when they don't like something,
- 54:06Speaker 1: they want to let you know. So there's a lot
- 54:08Speaker 1: of like my dad would do the same thing in
- 54:12Speaker 1: a movie theater. He wanted everyone to know him around
- 54:14Speaker 1: him that he did. It was not like in the movie.
- 54:19Speaker 1: It was so it's such an annoying trait my dad
- 54:22Speaker 1: like like not like NFL. But I remember my acting
- 54:29Speaker 1: teacher was sort of not vibing and was was doing
- 54:32Speaker 1: some sighing, and I just and I felt embarrassed. And
- 54:35Speaker 1: I knew the play wasn't as good as what I've
- 54:37Speaker 1: seen in New York, and I, of course the ingredients
- 54:40Speaker 1: were all there. I was already in an anxious state.
- 54:42Speaker 1: And I remember my lungs tightened up and I was like,
- 54:47Speaker 1: I couldn't breathe. It was like someone was standing on
- 54:49Speaker 1: my chest. And I was like, and and then then me,
- 54:51Speaker 1: your brain does? What is your brain do? He goes
- 54:52Speaker 1: you start playing it out, You go, oh my god,
- 54:54Speaker 1: the animal is gonna have to come. I'm gonna be
- 54:56Speaker 1: on a stretcher. All these people will be filtering at
- 54:58Speaker 1: this theater seeing me on a stretcher. Oh my god,
- 54:59Speaker 1: what is my professor going to think? And just start snowball? Snowball? Snowballing?
- 55:04Speaker 1: That's called spiraling? How did you get out of that one?
- 55:08Speaker 1: And now I'll tell you how I got out of it?
- 55:09Speaker 1: Was a miraculous I was able to do it. But
- 55:11Speaker 1: I had taken a few yoga classes and I was
- 55:14Speaker 1: I was starting newly into getting in yoga, and a
- 55:17Speaker 1: big part of yoga is quieting your mind and doing long,
- 55:20Speaker 1: quiet breaths. And while watching this play quote quote unquote,
- 55:23Speaker 1: watching I sat next to this dude and went into
- 55:27Speaker 1: a yoga breath session where I was just slowing down
- 55:32Speaker 1: my breath in and ah, And I fully I didn't
- 55:36Speaker 1: know what it was. I didn't know it was a
- 55:37Speaker 1: panic attack, but I talked myself down. When I was
- 55:41Speaker 1: a kid, they used to take us to my parents
- 55:43Speaker 1: and my aunts and uncles and everything like that. Used
- 55:46Speaker 1: to take all of the kids to the ashram and
- 55:50Speaker 1: in New York, and you know, there was this dude
- 55:54Speaker 1: mud Nanda and this uh. When he passed away, his
- 55:59Speaker 1: protege uh cool Ramaya took over. And I remember seeing
- 56:04Speaker 1: people like you know, Lisa Bonet, like a bunch of
- 56:06Speaker 1: actors and stuff there and what you would do literally,
- 56:10Speaker 1: you would just go there and you would you know,
- 56:12Speaker 1: either work as you know, labor on the at the ashram,
- 56:17Speaker 1: or you would meditate. And I remember that, you know that.
- 56:22Speaker 1: I remember when I first it was like, you're literally
- 56:25Speaker 1: sitting there. Oh nahma sheva right. And so when I
- 56:42Speaker 1: moved out to Los Angeles and my mom, being the
- 56:47Speaker 1: awesome mother that she is, she gave me a cassette
- 56:51Speaker 1: of that. She's like, if ever you feel like you are,
- 56:55Speaker 1: you know, not gonna make it, put the s on
- 57:01Speaker 1: and just relax. And you know, so I would play
- 57:05Speaker 1: that stuff. Wow. My cousins, my cousins still do that.
- 57:08Speaker 1: My all of them do that. It's it's yeah, it's
- 57:12Speaker 1: definitely chanting um yoga really um. By the way, if
- 57:17Speaker 1: you're someone listening, who's who suffering from this? First and foremost,
- 57:20Speaker 1: see see a qualified therapist. But also something that I
- 57:24Speaker 1: think is I highly recommend is getting into yoga and
- 57:28Speaker 1: meditation because that was the most valuable thing if you
- 57:33Speaker 1: need it. Obviously there are medications that can help you,
- 57:35Speaker 1: but the thing you can do right off the bat,
- 57:37Speaker 1: even before you explore medications, is is taking yoga class. UM,
- 57:43Speaker 1: get into meditation, which are many apps we talked about before.
- 57:47Speaker 1: There's no shrum out here actually too, it's not the same.
- 57:51Speaker 1: It's not the same people, and it's not the same chanting.
- 57:53Speaker 1: But you're just literally like anything like that, anything that
- 57:56Speaker 1: calms you down and gives you an opportunity to uh
- 58:01Speaker 1: look inward. It really helps with a lot of stress
- 58:05Speaker 1: and everything like that. Like I'd love to take my
- 58:07Speaker 1: wife to something like that, but I fear that she'd
- 58:09Speaker 1: freaking clown me, Like, Babe, let's go to the She's
- 58:13Speaker 1: like the osher, what it was like, she'd be open.
- 58:19Speaker 1: So anyway, there's the routes where I would eat Classic Rouse,
- 58:23Speaker 1: Giant Petco. You used to shop at that raups. I
- 58:27Speaker 1: still do. I used to live right around the corner.
- 58:28Speaker 1: We would walk there. It was you want to go
- 58:32Speaker 1: right to Beverly, Come on my own boys, Damn, I
- 58:35Speaker 1: might want to talk about as far this is not
- 58:39Speaker 1: called fake doctor's real friends and the DJ don't know.
- 58:49Speaker 1: Feel like this is the biggest sunroof I've ever seen. Yeah,
- 58:52Speaker 1: oh my god, it's so long. I don't want to burn.
- 58:55Speaker 1: Do you want to open it? Go ahead? Do you
- 58:56Speaker 1: want to burn? Like? Oh no? He did the whole
- 59:02Speaker 1: length of the car to the back and roof combined.
- 59:09Speaker 1: It is nice sun roof, beautiful, acting like you designed it. Alright.
- 59:14Speaker 1: So we're driving now into West Hollywood. And so the
- 59:19Speaker 1: restaurant this is where my next chapter of my Hollywood
- 59:22Speaker 1: story began when I got a job of restaurant. The
- 59:26Speaker 1: restaurant's gone now, it's now like a store. So this
- 59:29Speaker 1: place right here, do you recall me trying to bring
- 59:31Speaker 1: you here one night because we couldn't find a cloud
- 59:35Speaker 1: to go to. And you brought me here and and
- 59:37Speaker 1: you were like, this motherfucker is bringing me to where
- 59:40Speaker 1: I used to work. Your words, was closed this place
- 59:45Speaker 1: when I was working here, this was the hottest place
- 59:47Speaker 1: in town. It was meant to be a restaurant. It's
- 59:49Speaker 1: it's a it's a chain. There's there's chains, the wrong word.
- 59:52Speaker 1: It's there. It's a very high end restaurant. But there
- 59:54Speaker 1: were five of them across the country at the time,
- 59:56Speaker 1: and this was the l a out post and it
- 59:58Speaker 1: was very popular and it was meant to be this restaurant.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: But on the second floor was a bar, and the
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: bar was the spot at the time. Did you come yeah, man,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: I remember I was broke, Okay, So after cluelessen in
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: between scrubs, I had no money. I spent all my
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: money on a house because I was having a I was,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I had kids. I just had to two kids, Dote
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: and Kaya were born, and so I spent all of
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: his money to house myself and my girlfriend at the time,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: um so that we could live right. And my buddy
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: Kevin Jordan's used to always try and get me to
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: go out because he was new. He was he was
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: in Hollywood for about the same amount of time that
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I was, but he was trying to develop himself as
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: a director and all that stuff, and so he would
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: be like, yo, come out with me, come out with me.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: And one night he brought me here and I had
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: no do. I think I had something like forty bucks
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: on me, so, you know, literally, and I remember my wife,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: my girlfriend at the time, being like, you know, you
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: might need that for gas. This is okay, all right,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: And so we went out and I drank my forty
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: dollars like that, and so I had to ask my
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: buddy if he could buy me some drinks. But I
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: remember being up in there and it was packed and
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: it felt like we were sitting on the floor at
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: one point, you know what. It was the spot and
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: I didn't really go upstairs because I was a waiter
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: on the main floor, and um, it was very, very hard.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: I became very good friends with all of the people
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: that worked here. You know, there's so much camaraderie when
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: you're awaite staff and you're going through at the tables. Gosh,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: on a Saturday night, it was just insanity. And I remember,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: if you've ever waited tables, there's times when you have
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: this computer and you you put in all the orders
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: and you look at the table and it's you're so slams.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: You're in the weeds, as they say, and you're like,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: oh my goodness, why does that table not have their
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: appatizers yet, and then you look in the computer and
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: you never put it because he would just so swam
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: and mind you, I'd never done this before, and it
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: is so hard in the beginning, well in the beginning, yeah,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: I've never done it. I mean to go from It
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: wasn't like I was starting in like a slow diner.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: I was. I went from zero to a packed SNY
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Beverly Hills restaurant, just like in the movie. I wore
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: a beige tunic. I didn't do I make up, and
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: we didn't have earpieces, but I added that. But one
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: thing that is true from Garden State is that the
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: manager would jokingly tell me in the movie, I'm it's
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: actually George C. Wolf and he's being serious. But she
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: would joke in something she would hold up head shots
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: because people would try and get a job there by
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: showing their head shot for some reason, and she'd be like,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: you see all these head shots every day. I get
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: these head shots. So if you're late again, I guess
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: who's getting your job and hold up the head shot.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: And I put that in Garden State, he goes, George C.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: Wolf goes so and so from Duluth, Minnesota is going
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: to get your job. Your retention level is still high.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Um coffee, baby. I really want to look up in
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: the manual what the other icons are. I really want
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: to hit this parking button and see what this car does.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: You want to try to pay a little parkings somewhere. No,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: I don't want to. I don't want to do it.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: I don't want to do that, but I kind of do.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: Let's go on the road. Oh my god, look at that.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: As he's backing up. I told you there's an it's there.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: They're fish hye lenses in the sides of the car.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: But looked, Daniel, that's from above. How could that possibly work?
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: It come? It looks like that? Sure, looks at the wheels.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: The wheels were a lot bigger than it looks because
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: it's really just fish eye lenses that are just on
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: the side of the car. Really. Yeah, that's incredible. I've
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: never seen that in the car before. All right, So
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: now we're getting in our our tour of Hollywood continues.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: We're driving up of a very posh street in West
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Hollywood called Robertson where there's lots of fancy stores Pizzana's
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: around here too. Well. Yeah, so now we're on to
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Melrose to Chon. Very nice restaurant. If you come to
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: lah that's a great one. Here's catch l A if
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: you want to come have the c experience. I was
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: one of the original owners of catch ll none of it,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: and I got bought out because because that's what you
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: do when they offer you money. Yes, oh yeah, money.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: And someone had the upfront party here and everyone it's
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: a very popular place to have parties. We went to
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: an NBC Universal party. What do you say, I say, right,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: we went to an upfront party. They're not an upfront
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: NBC Universal party there once and let me tell you something,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: right now, go ahead, and when you have money to
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: eat well in the city, that's true, when you have money.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: We're mentioning places that are not cheap currently, but we're
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: in the not cheap area right although fairly priced right here,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: play Zinky z I n q Ui. Have you ever
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: come to Inside and Outside Dining Might across the street
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: from the Pacific Design Praises where I saw get out
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: for the first time at the Design Center. Yeah, they
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: had they do uh luxury black press screening. This place
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: coming up also, Great Earth cafe. Also, my favorite place
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: to shop is coming up right now. It's called Dragon Ball.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: I thought you were gonna say cookies, and I was
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: gonna be like, it's my favorite place. Like Earth Cafe.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Back when I was eating chicken, they make a curry
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: chicken salad sandwich. Change in life, it's curry. It's curry
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: flavoring in a chicken salad. Really good. Also designed within reach.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: If you want a Herman Miller chair for twice as
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: much money as it usually called. Really, I didn't know
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: they marked it up. It's it's sixpensive. Are you gonna
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: go left unlocked? Cienaga. Hey, we were about to pass
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: one of our all time favorites back in the day.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: It's no longer our all time favorite. But we used
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: to go to this restaurant right here all the time.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: You used to go to that spots Fancy and there's
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: uh yeah, there's some good restaurants on this this part
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: of the town. I remember when this was the Spanish Kitchen.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: You used to go to the Garlic Stinking Rose Yet
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: to chow. Still, you know, I haven't gone to Fog
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: to chow in a long time actually, but that is
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: one of my favorite restaurants. What is Brazilian Brazilian barbecue.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: It's the kind where you like, flip the thing and
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: they just keep bringing you cut to meat. They're like,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: would you like? Would you like? And you just shave
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: it off onto your plate and then when you're done,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: you flip it over. You do you got a green
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: side of the red side? I got on this next
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: block here, I really roll backwards? Um or did somebody
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: roll back on you? I almost fell backwards a little bit.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Oh at the top of this is, by the way,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: this is the worst stick shift street intersection because it's
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: because it's very steep, very we're last to get meat.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Sunset is advanced because the problem is is that people
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: assume that you're in an automatic car these days and
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: they pull up right behind you. So there's no room
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: to roll back at all, and you gotta be you
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: gotta be on it to which is weird, but a
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: stick shift because even when you're on flat surfaces, it
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: seems like it backs up for Yeah, but this is
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: like this part of l is not too hilly, um,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: but right there is. That's a that's a tough intersection. Um.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: So we're now going to head to the Disney Yeah,
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: not to be confused with disney Land. For those of
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: you not in the business, Well I'm explaining for people
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: that have no thought we were going to Disneyland. Sorry, kids,
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: We're going to a want in California venture. Okay, we
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: are not doing the sorry continuing you want to go right, yeah, um,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: we wouldn't. Keeping my baby, I want to go to Disneyland,
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: right exactly. That place is not good. This place Carney is.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: This is my chili dog spot really stopped even there
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: after my hot dog looked like a damn plumb Remember
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: this one Cobo canteena that used to be the jam
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: when that was a parking lot. Right, there's a place
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: coming up called Pinche's Tacos. No, the pink tacos that's
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: right here is where I work out unbreakable performance up
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: there on above the pink taco. Alright, well see you're there,
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: pink taco like this is called up here. See it
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: says Pinche's Taco, which is funny because pinches means fucking
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: in Spanish. So the place is called Tacos Tacos. Alright,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: getting the left lane here, bra, do you want to
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: do that or do you want to get on the
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: one on one all the way up? Are you gonna
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: be able to get on the one thirty four that way? Yeah?
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: You are. No, Wait, we're trying to get to We're
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: trying to get a burbank. Yeah. Oh, I would just
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: take this down across the taking down by the way.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: This is by the way for those of you listening,
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: this is how you have to talk about getting around
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: l A. You've seen it on SNL in the California's
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: so real the realist, the realist conversation, the elaborate conversations
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: about how to navigate to the four old five got
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: to the tin. What's going on over there yesterday? Do
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: you remember when hide was here? Oh, this is gone?
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: I think that Where is it? It's right here where
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: it's a sneaker garden. It's so this we're we're passing
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: where where this is must be eight oh two nine sunset,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: right across from Blats and yeah. So if you're gonna
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: follow our our journey one day, it's it's three doors
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: down from Green Bats Deli. And that was the hotspot
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: small nightclub that Donal and I used to go to.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: That's before you with Casey before hied y that was
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: that was everywhere. Now it was real famous, it got
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: real famous. But the original little one was there, and
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: Donald and I gett into lots of high jinks hikes.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: Remember Jessica Simpson once came in wearing Daisy Dukes and
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: a and a and a flannel to and I said
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: to her, someone got to keep their wardrop. I thought
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: it was funny, But Donald Crimson Casey might have someone
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: got the keeper wardrobe hard well she was. She was
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: dressed like like now that that always cracked me up.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: Me and Donald showing up in scrubs. That's exactly what
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: it would be like. Actually. All right, So since we're
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: added to the Disney lot, let's talk about our experience.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: So when you're we've told you if you're avid listening
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: to the podcast about Something's before. But at the very
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: end of your audition process, there's two final steps, the
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: last two hurdles you have to go through. You have
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: to go to the studio and audition in front of
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: their executives, and then you go to the network and
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: you audition. If you make it past the studio level,
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: then you make it too that I didn't have to
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: do that at I don't think mine was on the
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: Disney lot. I don't remember where it was. I remember
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: it was like a really tiny room. Though, Um, your
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: studio tests, you didn't have to do it. My studio
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: test was Zucker's first, uh first, right, My my network
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: test was my studio test. Also they were everybody was
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: in the room, if I'm if I'm correct, I didn't
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: audition for scrubs as many times as you did, right, Well,
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: maybe because you were famous. I had I had competition.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: There were three. There were two dudes whom I knew
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: very well and partied with, and and they both auditioned
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: for scrubs at the studio with me, and I still
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: blew the audition man. One of them almost got that
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: job if it wasn't for Bill coming out and be like, dude,
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: come on, get it together. But it's a lot of
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: pressure because you start auditioning in smaller locations and all
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: of a sudden, by the way, this all this all
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: goes full circle because where we're going was also this
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: is the route I would take to take that girlfriend.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: And I told you about to her job, and I
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: would drop her off on this very same lot. So
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: my life came No keep going to go to court
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: only get on the freeway. No, that's a side street
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: also that you can turn onto gets the barn. Yeah,
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: I took the one on one. Okay, yeah it's a
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: it's it's Coanga Boulevard actually, but he's just saying to
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: I know, but there's a the side street over here
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: is Coanga also next to the freeway and then it
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: turns into Highland. Huh wild Oh, I know what you're
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: talking about. Where here it goes on the side of
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: the freeway left and then you cross over. Totally I
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: know what you mean. Yeah, totally also valid that the
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: quarner we just passed. That's my favorite burger in l
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: A right now. There Wednesday through Sunday on the corner
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: of Sigamore Laba or a Sigamore and Sunset. It's a
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: pop up called Chris and Eddies. They're about to have
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: their first brick and mortar at Western and Sunset and
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: they do a smash slider and it's my favorite burger
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: right now. Correct side note that I will cut out
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: of your cut that you keep it. In the episode,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: we're shouting out all of these great restaurants and we're
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: telling people who don't live in l A when they
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: come to l A where to go eat? When you
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: moved out? Here was the spaghetti factory still there? No,
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: maybe it was. I don't I've never been there. What
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: is that I've heard? It was like it was literally
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: what it's called a spaghetti factory and it was the
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: worst tasting spaghetti. You whatever. It's a well, it's a franchise.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: So it's like they have one right across from the
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: San Diego Convention Center. Every year. One of the groups
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: of fifty a half to meet it was like, let's
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: just go to spahetti factory. Please, No, I'll just get
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: a drink. Yeah, it's fine. Um. Anyway, everything kind of
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: came full sir, because now I was on the verge
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: of getting a really life changing job and it just
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: happened to be on the very same back lot. I
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: think it's always so trippy when there is a place
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: where you have all of these bad memories and then
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: you come back better, stronger. Well, it's really interesting. There's
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: so there are some places where I'm like, I don't
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: think I've ever done a movie or a project for this,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: for this studio, you know what I mean? Like I
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: haven't done a paramount job since Clueless. I think if
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: I'm if I'm correct, and you know, uh, Warner Brothers.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: I remember I couldn't break I couldn't get into a
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: Warner Brothers anything for the longest and the last few
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: things that I've done have been Warner Brothers. Um. But
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: I remember being like driving by because you know how
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: they put the pictures up on the on the sides
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: of the studios, Like I don't think I've ever been
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: Maybe I've been in a Sony thing. Yeah I did.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: Brak Donovan was at Sony. But do you know how
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: you drive by and you see all these pictures in
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: you like, one day that's gonna be my picture. That's
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: yet to happen until Scrubs. When we did Rubs and
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: it went into syndication, and I remember us being on
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: every fucking bus in New York City and all my
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: friends being like, dude, you are everywhere right now. That
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: was the old Hollywood Athletic Club, right there is the
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: best place to have a fancy dinner event, play pool
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: and everything. But um, I remember being like this is
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: the best. Wow, I've made it when the bus drove by.
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: I remember going to New York. And it's not dawning
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: on me that I was on the bus until somebody
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: was like. I was sitting in the car with my
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: dad and he looked over and he was like, get
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: the He was like, look at this, and I looked
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: over and it was us scrubbing in whatever the post was,
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: three of us where it was in New York, like
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: on some street, and he and just my dad being like, wow,
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: my son is on a bus. But I was oblivious
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: to it, you know what I mean, Like I looked
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: over when I was like, yeah, I know, I was.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: I hate when people do that. Sorry, I'm sorry. My
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: wife does that ship You might want to turn right. Sorry,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: I'm reminding you. Listen, man, I'm ham Solo, aren't you Bacca?
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: Look our ip an the music. This was our our
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: last great giant, freaking arc light, our last great beautiful
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: movie theater. The last place I saw a movie was
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: the arc Light before pandemic happened. Here's here's the question.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: Who buys the arc Light or who buys the romedon?
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: Friend Tarantino does. He's got enough money to do it.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: So well's the Hollywood landmark, so let's protected. They can't no, no, no,
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: they're not tearing it down. But I just think it'll
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: be the Netflix romon. Oh, that's that'd be really cool. Actually,
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: are buying a lot of your estate out here. I'm
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: gonna check here. Okay, so check this out on. Let
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: me check your total level. It's still high. Hold on,
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: check this out where the r is. My first manager
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: ever in the history of being managed was Tracy Edmonds,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: and this was Edmonds Entertainment right here where we are.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: And this prompted one night Zack and I got to
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: go to the Playboy mansion. We went with Tracy Edmonds
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: and we went to Kenny Babyface Edmund's house. You remember
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: how big that thing was. That thing was like this,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: so it was enormous. This was this was his thing.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: And right here this used to be a convenience store
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: that wasn't really a convenient store, was a week spot
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: for station. Look at and none of them got on masks.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: I know, the master done, I guess. Look at these
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: people and not even it looks like, um, oh my god,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: that seems like irresponsible. Um. And we just passed the
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: Hotel Cafe, which is where a lot of our friends
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: play music. And it's a great place to see love
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: of music. If you come to Los Angeles, Well this
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: right here, you remember this, Vinald Joseph's right, Joseph, Yes,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: this was a clerk. I remember seeing you think I
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: want to spend rest of my life living on Yuka.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: That's Vince Vaughn and the masterpiece made. I still say this,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: man to this day. Vince Vaughn and uh Bro fab
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: need to do another one. I'm ready me too, because
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: I don't know if enough people saw a Maide. I
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: don't know if enough people saw swingers. Everyone saw swingers.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: I don't know, man, everyone and saw swingers is old now?
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: Is it still relevant? Like? Does it still feel the
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: same If you're listening to this and you haven't seen swingers,
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: you can see swingers and then you need to follow
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: it with me. You stole my then, and I don't
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: like you for me. This is my prede movie, man
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: oh man. So we're on our way to the Disney Lot,
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: which you can you know, I don't know if they
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: give tours of the Disney law not anymore. They used to.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: It's a will place though. Fun fact about the Disney
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: Lot helped build it. Um He was planning to build
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Disneyland right next to it. But the city of Bourbay
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: was like, you're going to make us look like a carneytown.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: Get out, uh and so that's when they went to
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: uh Anaheim. But as he was building up the lot,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: he reature all of the buildings were earthquake proof. So
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: it's quite being built in like the early fifties. You
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: if you look at it, all the bricks are made
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: so that as they shift, they kind of like ship
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: and hold back into one another so won't fall down.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: It's great still to this day, considered earthquake proof. That's smart. Wow,
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: he was a smart guy, very forward thinking. Um. The
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: the lot itself is featured. Um, if you want to
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: see it in the Tom Hanks movie about the making
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: of Mary Poppins. What's that you call him something Mrs Something,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: Mr Banks, Mr Saving Mr Bank. So um, obviously it
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: really took place there, that the experience of making Mary Poppins,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: and they there's all sorts of shots on the lot
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: of Tom Hanks being Walt Disney quick tidbit. What a
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: lot was La La Land comed on? That's a good question.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: My guests would be Warner brother being very good, right,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: very god so when you're an actor in Hollywood and
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: you're going on auditions, you have to drive around, often
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: to cast rigor's offices, but very often if it's television shows,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: um to the actual back lots and there's let's say
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: five or six major ones and they're all spaced over town.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: So back in the old school way of doing pilot season,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: you could have five or six auditions a day, and
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: you'd have one over here, and then the next one
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: would be forty five minutes away, and then then one
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: after that will be back over here. And when I
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: first moved out here, I think I've told you this.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: I didn't. We didn't have GPS, so and I had
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: no idea where I was going. He was the name
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: of that book that you had to get, the Thomas
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: Thomas Thomas Guy, and it was this elaborate map that
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: was like three inches thick book. I got that as
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: a present for my sixteenth birthday, and my mom was like,
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: you're initiated, right. It was like ABC. It was like
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: all the numbers of the letters and then all the
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: numbers too. To coincide, GPS was perfect for l because
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: it's just such but that's how studios would get you
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: to the audition. They'd be like, it's page such and
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: such and such and such and the Thomas Guide. And
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: you'd like, Okay, to get to here, I have to
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: do this, and then you'd have to trace it back
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: to where you are and the Thomas Guide and how
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: would connects navigation alone? It was I told you, I
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: think I told you. My brother would draw me these
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: elaborate hand drawn maps. He'd be like, this is he'd
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: be like, this is from Europe, from our place to
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: audition one, from audition one to two, and different page
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: from audition three to four. Big. He was amazing. It
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: was very sweet, and he was an artist, so they
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: were like beautiful. I wish I still had them. That
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: sounds like a game show in itself, giving some like
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: millennials or a gen kids, a Thomas guy being like, okay,
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: get here. The other thing that sucked about living on
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: Detroit Street to get over here was always traffic. There's
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: always traffic in this area, whether it's going this way
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: or this way at some point in the day, right,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: So if you worked over here to get back, it
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: would take at least an hour just to get through
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: this whole bar, this bar and pass is tough. Now
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: over here is the oak Wood. Well, they don't call
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: the oak Woods anymore, but it's a It was temporary
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: housing where a lot of actors who would come into
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: town for a little while they would stay there, and
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: children very often. There was a documentary that was amazing. Um, well,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: can you look it up for me. It's a documentary
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: about child actors and the oak Wood apartments. And because
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: their families would come into town for pilot season and
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: they'd live in these in these houses and uh, it
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: was something like two thousand three that four thousand dollars
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: a month or some crap just to live with it though, man,
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: and and it was if you didn't get the furnished
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: one like it was. This was it was a pain
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: in the butted Hollywood Complex. That's what it's called, all right.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: If you guys want to watch a documentary about it's
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: called the Hollywood Complex. And I think they finally rebranded
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: it because it has such a negative connotation. Seriously, So
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: now it's called the Ava Woods. What we're not woods,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: We're not no, no, no, it's different now. And this
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: is the back of my mercies. This is the universal back.
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: Like I had a fitting over here for Josie and
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: the Pussycat, and then over here is the Warner brother lot.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: Now we're just pulling up to the Warner Brothers lot.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: I love the Warner Brothers back. But it's so pretty.
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: It's very pretty before the fire. What was that two
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: years ago? Now that that ancient Western set where like
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: everyone brothers Western sho oh, No, that wasn't here. That
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: was something that was Actually that's a different lot. It is.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: The Western lot was an actual lot. Well, they have
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: a Western set here, I know because I took ny
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: seems to film on another and why New York Film
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: acady since film there all the time. Here's the posters, posters,
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: you're still I was hoping to be in this one
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: next year. You know you're not there right now. You
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: need to be young Sheldon. Did you audition for young Sheldon?
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: You could have been young audition for Sheldon. You could
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: have an old Sheldon. All American. Look at Ta Digs
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: like Ta Diggs. Baby Diggs made the All American. It's
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: like the c w's number one show. Dude. It's like
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: a modern Friday Nightlights. Oh really yeah, and Ta Diggs
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: has a really big part in it. It's about football, yes,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: and then their spinoff is about h S b C.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: Did I say that right? HBC? Thank your HBC. I
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: don't know why I think HSP and universities. I was like, wait,
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: this billboard has always been so key to me, and
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: um this one here we're in the h and that's
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: like such an iconic spot because everyone who comes into
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: this part of the valley where all the lots are
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: see that billboard everything. And when I made Going in
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: Styles for Warner Brothers, who controls that billboard, and I
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: was like, I have one request. Can I we at
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: least be on that billboard? And they said yes, So
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: we had like a month up there. Let's go because
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: it's just such a pivotal course that billboard in the
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: valley and everyone sees it. Everyone sees it, all right,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: this is usually the gate right up here, at this
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: next gate, around this corner, and everything's audition around this
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: car and you go down there. Huh. But they bring
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: the actors in the back door and I want you
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: messing up the front and you guys ever owned or
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: stayed in one of the bungalows. No, No, that's my dream.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: I want to just live in one of the nobody
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: lives there, but Bill's Bill's offices in one of those worlds.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: So cool. Um, alright, so we're getting close. This place
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: ridiculous and the apartments above it are so over We're
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: just like about the whole foods Like Nope, I think
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: I'm trying overside. So we are now passing the Heart Studios.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: Heart Theater is to year ago we showed up for
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: the Heart Podcast Awards. This is where jay Leno used
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: to be Old Studio. It's where they shoot all of
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: the overatch, overwatches, overwatches video games. For those of you
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: who don't know why you guys talked about that for
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: a second. This has started cam, one of the last
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: places in town still develops film blessed. We're really getting
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: a good tour of aus. I really feel like you
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: guys should if you if you're listening and you come
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: be a tourist here, you should just listen to this
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: and follow us. This is how you do it, hun
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: Date two sar Um and then you follow our map.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: So go right here, Donald, here's the Disney lot we
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: can show actually the entrance school went in. Look at
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: those mouses. Do you know how many mouses are all up.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: I think it's nice. I think it's mice. Look at
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: just mice. You know how many mister up there in
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: the right lane. Maybe this is Providence High School. My
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: brother coached basketball here. Well, anyway, that's where I entered
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: trying to tell you a story. Where can we pull it?
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: Go and pull in the Providence High School? Well, careful,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: good thing. The Honda Tuson told us. It warned us
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: that I want to override what it thinks is your
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: attention level and tell them you're not a full coffee.
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: Let's take a We'll be right back after these fine words. Yeah,
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: So what can I tell you? I had a regiment
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: that I followed when I started getting callbacks for scrubs.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: I was I would wear the same outfit, blue button
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: down shirt I still have. I had a little bit
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: of facial scruff which I kept. And then I went
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: to this June him and run on the treadmill for
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: thirty minutes. And then I had these songs. So I
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: pulled into that parking lot on the Disney lot, and
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: I had a series of songs I would play to
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: get me myself amped up, and one of them was
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: a radio head song called stop Whispering, and the lyrics
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: were essentially stop whispering, start shouting, and I interpreted it
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: as like for myself, stop lip being small, stopped playing tiny,
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: like go big, you know when I had one of those.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: I had two songs that were like that, and they
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: were both by eminem on his first LP, and it
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: was rock Bottom and it was I Just Don't give
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: a fuck, and I used to play I Just Don't
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: give a funk after every audition, whether I blew it
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: or I got it right. You know. It was one
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: of those things where it was like, you know, like
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: that album for some reason really touched on, you know,
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: before scrubs. Like I said, before I was I had
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: once again, I was broken. I spent all this money
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: on this house, and you know, I wasn't managing my
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: money well or anything, and I, uh, I everything just
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: never seemed to go the right way, you know what
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: I mean. It just seemed like no matter what I did,
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: I couldn't get there. Whether I trained really hard or
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: you know, or whether I studied the night before, I'd
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: get in the room and I'd literally black out and
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: be like, uh, ship was my first line was My
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: first line was my first line was my first line,
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: and it kept happening. And when Scrubs came around, thank
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: goodness it didn't happen. And thank goodness for Bill to
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: be honest with you, man, because I don't know. I
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: don't know what about him at being such a great cheerleader.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: I don't know that I would have There's no way
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: I would have gotten this part. Like I say that too.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: I say that to a lot of people. I'm one
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: of the worst auditioners you'll ever meet. But if you
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: give me the role and give me some time to
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: work with you, I'll deliver what you're looking for. Well,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: it's a good lesson to for for people filmmakers and
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: creators out there. Like someone you love, you know, chokes
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: at the audition, Like, don't give up on them because
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: they know it's so there's so much pressure, you know,
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: here we are, it's just like athletes. I'm sure you're
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: you're in the locker room, so to speak. Although I'm
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: in my Nissan to Fort SX and I'm trying to
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: get myself, you know, psyched up to not mess this up.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Everything's on the line right now. It doesn't matter how
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: many times I did it. Right before. All that matters
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: is that when I go in this room, I'm gonna
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: do it right now. And so I would listen to
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: that song stop whispering to be like, you know you've
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: been you've been being small, you've been you you, you
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: haven't been bringing your best, you haven't been bringing you
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: a game. You're gonna go in there and start shouting.
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: And another song I would live listen to was blind
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: Melon song, Um, no Change, just afraid to change? That
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: song about well, it's not necessarily that co music you
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: listen to, but you you know, we know that, righty,
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: you listen to no listen to all music now. But
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: at that point in time, anyway, change was about like
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: being afraid of change and and not and and being
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: intimidated by by I don't know, I interpreted is being
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: intimidated by starting a new chapter where you're living your
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: full your fullest and your being your best and your
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: fully self expired. You know that's that's scary as fun
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: for a lot of people. That's you know what I mean, Like,
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: the fear of success is real. I don't care who
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: you are, you fear of the unknown and if you've been,
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: if you haven't been successful your whole life, and it
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: come and and and you see it on the horizon.
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: That's the easiest way to talk yourself out and stuff.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: I've been here for so long, you know what I mean.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: I'm not gonna so what if it doesn't happen right
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: now for me? Like you find ways to talk yourself
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: out of it, that's pretty cool the man like you.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: That was my turn. I'll get one four anyway. That's
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: really and I find that very refreshing that you know
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: you could go it's blinking yellow, but there's cars coming
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: now it's red. Don't talking Chewi. This is Chewy for
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: fucking drive carefully. Thank goodness for the two song. All
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: these safety features. Look at all these safety features easy chewy.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: Um No, But that's refreshing to know that you know
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: you're not the only one that feels that way, so
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: you know, to hear stories like that, that's great. I
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: definitely didink um. It's a good idea. You know. Obviously
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: we all see athletes on TV listen to music and
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: their selves psyched up. But I think it's a idea
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: for whatever you're doing. If you're going on a job interview,
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: if you're if you're whatever, whatever task is making you
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: nervous and anxious, put on a song of time having
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: sex with someone. Sure, I wasn't gonna say that, but short,
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: you're like in the bathroom, get fired up. Here, we
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: go hard to go home. You can harrd to go home.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: You can go hard to go home like some romance music.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: But that's a good way to start it off. It's
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: either that or on this hard of a smooth that
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: never works young. Whatever works for you, put it on
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: and give yourself like that. That's how I go on auditions.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: I definitely recommend it for actors, putting on a song
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: that gives you confidence, that makes you feel like you
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: got this. It definitely worked for me. Do you find
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: that when you go on auditions or and you don't
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: really care that much that you do a better job? Um?
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: You know, there's an expression I think of I think
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: I mentioned it before, maybe not but being committed but
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: not attached. And so I'm I'm committed, but I'm not
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: like desperately hanging on by my fingernails. I need this,
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: So it's like I'm committed. I'm gonna go do my best.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna bring everything and everything that is in my
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: control will be at level ten. But I'm not in
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: a desperate place, like if this doesn't happen, I'm gonna
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: give up and die right right. That's hard because the
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: minute that good audition comes in, Like I remember I
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: auditioned for Red Tails, and I wanted it so bad,
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: but they kept telling me you're a little too old.
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: They didn't say you're a little too old. They were like,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: you're too old for these parts. And I was like,
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: what are you talking about. I got such a baby face,
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: like you're a little too old. I think I was
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: like dirty at the time. And they were kids, and
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: you know, they're supposed to be kids in it, and
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: they were like, we have a role, but you know,
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: still you're a little to all. But we're gonna let
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: you audition for it. Guess who beat me out for
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: the part two method? Man Motherfucker's two Times in a
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: Row Gardens, stay and freaking. He said, I was two
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: old looking who beat me out? Sam Jackson? But uh yeah, man,
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: Like I remember wanting it so bad and studying so hard,
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: and you know, working with my wife on it, and
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: you know heard giving me, you know, critiques on how
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: I should do it. And everything, and me being like,
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: you're absolutely right, and you know, going in there and
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: just not even close to crossing crushing the audition, Like
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: I blew it completely right, but I was so attached
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: to it. But I had animosity to the direct towards
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: the director. I was like, man, fuck you for not
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: hiring me, you know, like all of these things, dude,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: Like I just I for a minute, I was so
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: piste off at George Lucas, you know what I mean,
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: like just everything because I really at that role and
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I was so attached to getting that role. And it's
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: hard not to do that. It's hard. You don't have to.
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: There's only so much. There's only so much in your control.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: Now you can't control. Did you really put in the
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: work and work on it. Did you really get memorized
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: and really know it backwards and forwards? Did you really
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: work on it in multiple different ways? Did you really prepare?
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: When I look back at it, I definitely did not,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Like when I look back
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: at it, swing it off here, we can get off
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: the cold water, right or get off here? Okay? I
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: when I look back at it, I smoked so much
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: weed before I would study and I smoked weed before
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: the audition, and I might even drank the night before
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: to try, like, you know, trying to get into the
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: mode and feel creative and ship like that, and that
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: you might feel good for a couple of takes, but
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: then that's a rap after that, bro, you know what
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: I mean? Like you're off in la la land. You're
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: not no unintended, You're not really got to right, You're
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: not really in it to win it. But that's just
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: exactly what I'm saying, is that you don't look at
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: be really critical of of Did you truly, truly truly
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: bring your agga? Did you drink the night before? Did
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: you smoke a ton of weed that week before? This
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: is all just acting, but applied to your own life
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: in any way you can you know, did you? Is
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: there anything you could have done to have made your
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: performance in the moment better? And uh? And then if
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: you've done that, you walk away and go, Okay, it's
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: out of my hands. Now. I did everything I could,
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: And I can tell you from being on the other
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: side of the table. When you're a director, it's just
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: you might come in and blow me away with your acting,
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: but you look too much like the other guy' already cast,
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: or you blow me where you're acting and you're no
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: way you're gonna be the brother of the woman I've
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: already cast. The reasons that are just so out of
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: your control, age or whatever. Yeah, you know, I didn't
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: give myself I know, looking back at it now, I
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: know I didn't give myself a chance to win. But
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: I was so caught up in the fact that it
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: was it was something that I wanted, and because I
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: wanted it, I should get it, you know what I mean?
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: Like there's that feeling of entitledment. He felt entitled that
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: comes with being in the game for so long, you know.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: But that's the thing about Hollywood. I always tell young people,
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: nobody owes you any anything. Nobody owes you anything every
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: every every step of the way, you have to prove yourself.
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: Like careful, this woman is literally crossing the street with
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: a dog with no lesha. Like I dare them to
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: give me an audition for Star Wars, now, you know
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: what I mean, Like I dare you, triple dog, dare you?
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: But that has a sense of entitlement to it in
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: what way you're saying, Like I know that I would
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: be very prepared for that. I'm saying I misunderstood instead
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: of it, instead of being like, instead of being like, oh,
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: they're going to get getting emotional. Slow down, so we're
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: pulling up two well, I guess pull over here, dog
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: like that. Oh my goodness. So this is a weird
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: for us because this is not what it was anymore.
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: But this is a giant apartment building that used to
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: be the hospital. If you ever come here, it's at
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: the corner of Riverside and Wins. It across the street
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: from Mikado's, across the street from Mercado Japanese sushi bar,
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: which I never went to. They would bring it to
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: set sometimes. Oh really, then I guess I did have it.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: And there's a famous um industry hair and makeup supply.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: I don't know, don what do you feel. We spent
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: nine years of our life on this block. I never
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: thought they'd tear the hospital down to beyond. They always threatened.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: Every year. They were like, we're going to tear it down.
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: The first thing, we're gonna make a senior home. I
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: think it is a senior No, it's not. It isn't. No.
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: That was that was like one of the plans. It
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: doesn't seem like a great place to live, like a
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: lot of these departments, like who lives there? Okay, look
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: how skinny that is, and we're mad at it being
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: a new building. We're gonna criticizing exactly, although I have
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: to say it is it is. It is like the
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: stereotypic developer threw up an apartment building. I don't know
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: why they all look like, I'm okay to ship on
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: it because they took our spot. I wish it was
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: still an abandoned hubble. You're housing so many people, I know,
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: But listen, you guys. This this this, this, There's no
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: more cartoonish example of some developer putting up an l
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: a apartment building than this. This is what they all
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: look like. I remember so many things, like I feel
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: like my dressing room was like right around there, you know,
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: and we so many shots like basically where this little
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: drive in right there is. This was this is the
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: front lobby where all those scenes were. Um, you know
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: what's you know what's crazy. I remember because I lived
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: in the valley when we were making this. I lived
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: deep in the valley. I lived in Northbridge. But when
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: you would drive by this place on the one oh one.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: I could literally point at my dressing room. That's my
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: dressing room. That's my dressing room. And then I knew
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: where Zax was, I knew where Sarah's was, I knew
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: where Johnny's was, and you know, it was oh man,
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: such great memories of you know, they gave us direct
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: TV once with like unlimited little things. They gave us
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: direct TV. They gave us direct TV with unlimited pay
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: per view. WHOA, No, it wasn't unlimited if we never
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: saw the bill, and so you would just written movies,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: Oh my god. But I just remember being like, Wow,
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: this is amazing. And then like any new film that
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: came out, you could just watch it. And that was
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: sometimes wide and come to set because I was so
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: caught up in like, you know, the devil Wares products,
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: like you know, we um we uh. And then so
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: much of the show, if you know, the show, like
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: a lot of the listeners do, took place in that
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: parking lot that's um back there and it's a dirt,
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: but that was like a character. The parking lot was
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: sort of a character in the show. Happened there, and
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: you know, the great thing for us was, you know,
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: we just took you on a tour of some of
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: the back lots, and the thing about the back lots
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: is your Facebook. You're on fake sets, which can look amazing, obviously,
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: but there was something so magical about being off on
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: our own. All of it was real. We were in
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: a real hospital, and we built, as we've said before,
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: we built our sets into the hospital. And Bill had
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: no You know, sometimes when you're a lot, the executives
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: are always stopping by and giving you notes or saying
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: that Bill had no direct oversight here. No one came here,
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: no one, no one was going to come visit the
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: abandoned hospital, and he was really left to his own
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: devices to to make the show on his own. Out
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: I do, I do, I do miss that time in
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: my life. That was a really good time in my life.
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: Man Like I was making money, we were out, we
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: were something. We were the hit guys in Hollywood, if
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: you will, Like I remember Fred Savage coming up and
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: introducing himself to me and me being like, you're examples
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: of this. Not to this Fred Savage, he is awesome,
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: but your examples of celebrities you get stoked about, Like
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: I meant, Fred Wonder years was my gym speaking you
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: know the Wonder Years was my gym. Speaking of the
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: Wonder Years, though, is the new Dad on the Wonder Years?
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: Really it would be there would be something wrong if
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: we did a podcast they didn't say the words hill there. Well,
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: this was funny, guys. Yes, you know what's crazy is
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: that we just don't have enough time to go to
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: all the places that we lived, like an, all the
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: places that we experienced really cool things like there's you
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: know once uh I got put on with Clueless and
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: stuff like that. They're a bunch of places like I
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: had a there was an entourage house for me pretty
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: much and stuff. But you know that's for another show
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: and another time next time. This was really fun though,
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: it was. It was really fun and it makes me
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: want to do more things with you guys, Like we
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: should go on some adventures together. I like you when
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: we're in person. Our shows are always pops. We laugh
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: a lot. You guys are funny. All right, Well you
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: want to count us out with my friend about show
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: we made nurses around? Yeah around t m hmm
