- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, everybody. Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a bonus episode
- 0:14Speaker 1: of Long Story Short the podcast. I'm Megan.
- 0:17Speaker 2: You really have your podcast voice on? Don't you? Really?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Was imagining? What's that Saturday Night live skit with the ladies?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Do you know what I'm talking about?
- 0:25Speaker 2: I do know what you're talking about, but I don't
- 0:27Speaker 2: know what it's called.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Radio show that I really felt like that as I
- 0:32Speaker 1: started talking.
- 0:34Speaker 2: That was funny. Hi guys, I am Wendy.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And today on this bonus episode of the podcast, we
- 0:41Speaker 1: are discussing Sweet Pecan Summer, another movie in Hallmarks Summer
- 0:45Speaker 1: Nights series which is winding down. We've got one to
- 0:49Speaker 1: go after this, And Wendy, do you have a synopsis
- 0:53Speaker 1: of this movie?
- 0:54Speaker 2: I do? But first two things. One, do you say
- 0:58Speaker 2: pecan or pecan?
- 1:00Speaker 1: Say pecan?
- 1:02Speaker 2: Pecan? Yeah, pecan? Yeah, I guess I do. I wonder
- 1:06Speaker 2: if that's like a regional I'm sure you know I
- 1:11Speaker 2: tomato tomato right. The other thing I wanted to mention
- 1:17Speaker 2: is that Megan continues to make fun of me because
- 1:19Speaker 2: on our calendar I had a typo and it said
- 1:24Speaker 2: Sweat Pecan Summer. So that's what we call this movie now,
- 1:28Speaker 2: and delicious dish. What's delicious dish?
- 1:33Speaker 1: The name of Saturday eight Lives Fake Radio. Oh gosh, wow,
- 1:38Speaker 1: that's impressive. I thought you were talking about pecans for
- 1:42Speaker 1: some reason. I googled it. I did not drudge it
- 1:44Speaker 1: up for my memory.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Okay, all right, all right, so let's talk about sweet
- 1:49Speaker 2: pecan summer. Here is the summery Amanda has to work
- 1:54Speaker 2: with her ex boyfriend JP to sell her favorite ants,
- 1:58Speaker 2: pecan farm. My aunt tripped me up there because sometime, Aunt, Aunt,
- 2:04Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Anyway, putting aside their differences,
- 2:07Speaker 2: old feelings start to rekindle and they question their life,
- 2:10Speaker 2: life's paths. Jeez, that one got me all tongue tied.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Stars Christinko, Wes Brown, and Lauren tom Mm hmmm. That's it.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It's time for news and notes. I have a ton
- 2:27Speaker 1: of them. Yeah, do you I have several?
- 2:32Speaker 2: All right, news and notes. Wes Brown was an executive
- 2:35Speaker 2: producer on this film.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Yes, and his daughter was in the film. Yes.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I did read that, and I went back and looked
- 2:43Speaker 2: at it this morning. I wanted to see her. Not
- 2:46Speaker 2: that it didn't matter. She didn't have a line or anything.
- 2:48Speaker 2: She was basically an extra but that's real cute.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But then she's in the final softball scene again. I
- 2:55Speaker 1: think I don't recall that. I begeez, he likes she's
- 3:00Speaker 1: real cute with her brains.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, that's her. Yeah, that's her. I
- 3:04Speaker 2: also read that his wife, Amanda, sold the story to
- 3:09Speaker 2: I don't know whoever, see this is what his wife's
- 3:13Speaker 2: name is, Amanda Brown. I rewatched this movie for a
- 3:17Speaker 2: second time this morning to pay careful close attention to
- 3:21Speaker 2: like the credits right at the beginning. I didn't look
- 3:24Speaker 2: at them at the end because you know, and they
- 3:25Speaker 2: smushed them all rolled tight to show a preview of
- 3:27Speaker 2: like right, whatever. And I did not see her name.
- 3:30Speaker 2: But the article I read, according to I don't remember
- 3:35Speaker 2: what webs that's what it was Southernliving dot com. The
- 3:42Speaker 2: story is based on her family farm experience in Alabama. Yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 2: and Aunt Carol is a real aunt Carol.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I love that. I really love that, And I thank
- 3:53Speaker 1: you Hallmark for you know, Wes Brown's wife is a white,
- 3:59Speaker 1: blond lady. But we didn't have to make this a
- 4:03Speaker 1: white family. Yeah, the stories are universal, so I appreciate
- 4:08Speaker 1: that we have a full leading non white family.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Me too, and here listen to this note. According to
- 4:17Speaker 2: qcapproved dot com, this is the second movie ever to
- 4:23Speaker 2: feature in an Asian American family ever on Hallmark. On Hallmark.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's real, guys.
- 4:31Speaker 2: That's bananas. That is bananas to me.
- 4:34Speaker 1: You gotta get it moving, dude.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I mean, I really hope that there are twenty two
- 4:39Speaker 2: plans twenty two, twenty twenty two plans for movies more diversity.
- 4:45Speaker 2: We got little steps this year, but I want more
- 4:48Speaker 2: diversity baby steps, right.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So, yeah, Wendy and I both love Big Brother on CBS,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and this year, CBS has a new rule that their
- 4:56Speaker 1: reality shows must feature a cast that is fifty percent
- 5:01Speaker 1: persons of color, and so Big Brother, for the very
- 5:04Speaker 1: first time has a rather diverse cast, and more diverse
- 5:10Speaker 1: than in the past. You know, they would throw in
- 5:11Speaker 1: a token person of color and a token member of
- 5:14Speaker 1: the LGBTQ community, but it is, I would say, more
- 5:17Speaker 1: diverse than it has been. And I gotta say, I
- 5:21Speaker 1: love the cast this season. And whether it's simply good
- 5:28Speaker 1: casting or it's hey, look, you get a variety of
- 5:31Speaker 1: people and put them on a show, and all of
- 5:33Speaker 1: a sudden you get all these really interesting relationships. Right,
- 5:38Speaker 1: So take a queue from CBS, who you know has
- 5:41Speaker 1: come under their fair share of fire for some of
- 5:44Speaker 1: their executives in the past. So let's moving forward.
- 5:50Speaker 2: So I read that this movie was formally titled Love
- 5:54Speaker 2: at Peacan Farm. Oh, I'm gladly changed that name to
- 5:58Speaker 2: Sweat Peacan Summer indeed.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Because well, we'll talk about that when we get to
- 6:03Speaker 1: what we liked. Okay, Lauren tom who plays Aunt Carol.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Do you know her other memorable role?
- 6:14Speaker 2: I know she was in Friends.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yes, she played Julie on Friends. The second she comes
- 6:19Speaker 1: on screen, my brain does that thing, you know her,
- 6:21Speaker 1: but I could not place her, and then I MD
- 6:25Speaker 1: beat her and there she is. She's Julie from Friends.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Guys, did you see the long list of movies and
- 6:31Speaker 2: TV and voice actor and video games? In stage?
- 6:34Speaker 1: Like?
- 6:34Speaker 2: She has a prolific she does resume.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Her biggest callback for me is Friends. That's where I
- 6:43Speaker 1: recognized her face and somehow she has managed not to
- 6:46Speaker 1: age in the thirty years since she was Julie on Friends.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I see, I haven't seen Friends enough to even know, Like,
- 6:52Speaker 2: I don't remember Julie, Like, what was her like? What
- 6:54Speaker 2: was her storyline?
- 6:56Speaker 1: She was Ross's girlfriend when he came back from China.
- 6:58Speaker 1: So Rachel meets him at the airport ready to tell
- 7:03Speaker 1: him that she loves him too, and he comes back
- 7:06Speaker 1: with Julie, and so we have a multi episode relationship
- 7:10Speaker 1: arc where Rachel's trying to like, you know, not be
- 7:13Speaker 1: in love with him.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Got it? H Yeah, I don't. I don't remember that.
- 7:18Speaker 2: It's not the one that she didn't like shave her
- 7:21Speaker 2: head that was on her right.
- 7:23Speaker 1: That's that's Ben Stiller's wife.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's right, that's right.
- 7:27Speaker 1: His name has flown out of my head. Christine something yeah,
- 7:31Speaker 1: something good. I loved her. Did you watch that show
- 7:34Speaker 1: Hey Dude on Nickelodeon?
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yes, well I didn't watch it. I was in high
- 7:38Speaker 2: school when Hey Dude was on, but I.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Was a mere child.
- 7:42Speaker 2: You were, you were four years younger than me.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Uh huh.
- 7:45Speaker 2: But my little brother watched it, Hey Dude. Yeah, we
- 7:47Speaker 2: it was on TV a lot.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I loved that show, guys, dude.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Ah, that's okay.
- 7:57Speaker 1: This movie was filmed in Canada.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yeh. Can't you believe it?
- 8:02Speaker 1: It was filmed in Utah and they used an actual
- 8:07Speaker 1: pecan farm, the Thompson Family Pecan Farm.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Which I looked up because I was like, can I
- 8:15Speaker 2: visit there? It's beautiful. I want to walk through those orchards,
- 8:19Speaker 2: like it was so pretty that I don't know, I
- 8:21Speaker 2: just I just wanted to look at it. They have
- 8:23Speaker 2: like a storefront that you can go buy bags and
- 8:25Speaker 2: bags of pecans. But you know what is really funny
- 8:28Speaker 2: is that I was doing my usual dive on IMDb
- 8:31Speaker 2: and somebody had complained, like they should have showed a
- 8:35Speaker 2: real pecan farm. Those are not pecan trees, which side note,
- 8:39Speaker 2: I had no idea where pecans come from. I don't
- 8:41Speaker 2: know if they grow on bushes or trees or whatever.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 8:44Speaker 2: So I was like, at first thinking they didn't film
- 8:47Speaker 2: this in a real pecan farm, which okay, fine, but
- 8:51Speaker 2: turns out they did, so we did. So sit down
- 8:54Speaker 2: random IMDb reviews exactly.
- 8:56Speaker 1: And I have to say, West Brown, So the most
- 9:01Speaker 1: recent movie I believe we've seen him in is a
- 9:03Speaker 1: Nashville Christmas Carol.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I couldn't remember what movie he was in. I knew
- 9:09Speaker 2: I had seen him in a movie at least in
- 9:11Speaker 2: the last twelve months, huh, And that was it.
- 9:13Speaker 1: And I did love that movie. I did too, and
- 9:16Speaker 1: that was really fun. But I kind of think West
- 9:17Speaker 1: Brown's character was overshadowed by some of the fun cameos
- 9:20Speaker 1: we got in that movie, like Kicks, Brooks and McIntyre.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I really enjoy Wes Brown, so do I I need
- 9:27Speaker 1: a great role for him, so do I. I mean
- 9:35Speaker 1: when he look he's a good looking man, indeed with
- 9:39Speaker 1: a nice hot bod. I'm just gonna say it. And
- 9:43Speaker 1: he looks real good when he's on the baseball field
- 9:45Speaker 1: or playing in corn hole. He didn't have a bad
- 9:49Speaker 1: look in this movie, not at all, not at all.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So do you have any other news and notes?
- 9:56Speaker 2: No?
- 9:56Speaker 1: Uh so, what was your first impression of this movie?
- 10:00Speaker 2: I quickly lost interest. I thought it was I thought
- 10:03Speaker 2: it was a tad slow. Like the beginning and the
- 10:09Speaker 2: end were good for me. The middle part was like
- 10:11Speaker 2: hit or miss. I had to keep telling myself, like
- 10:16Speaker 2: rewind and focus, rewind and focus. You know what about you?
- 10:20Speaker 1: Well, we often talk about how we watched these movies,
- 10:23Speaker 1: like what we're doing when we're watching these movies, And
- 10:26Speaker 1: I will admit that I watched this movie this morning.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I mean I finished watching about five minutes prior to
- 10:31Speaker 1: the recording of this episode, and so keep in mind
- 10:34Speaker 1: that I was watching while I was brushing my teeth,
- 10:37Speaker 1: I was watching while I was making my coffee, while
- 10:39Speaker 1: I was having breakfast. However, all of that being said,
- 10:43Speaker 1: leaning into this movie, I did not have high hopes
- 10:46Speaker 1: for this movie because I the previews weren't doing anything
- 10:50Speaker 1: for me. I thought this was such a cute movie.
- 10:55Speaker 2: But didn't you think it was just like the same story?
- 10:58Speaker 2: And I know that's what Homer movies are, are the
- 11:01Speaker 2: same cookie cutter story, but I don't. I just thought
- 11:05Speaker 2: I wanted more depth from it. Am I asking too much?
- 11:11Speaker 1: You can ask for whatever you want. I thought they
- 11:13Speaker 1: did a good job. And if we want to talk
- 11:15Speaker 1: about what we liked, since that's our next segment. I
- 11:18Speaker 1: liked that we got kind of a heavier dose of
- 11:21Speaker 1: the family story.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I did like that that we did have.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Amanda and JP rekindling their relationship. But I liked, Hey,
- 11:29Speaker 1: at the heart of this movie is this family farm
- 11:31Speaker 1: that everyone's a little bit reluctant to give up. But
- 11:35Speaker 1: everyone has their own goals, and so how do we
- 11:40Speaker 1: get to a point where everyone's happy, where Aunt Carol
- 11:42Speaker 1: gets to, you know, start her second phase in life?
- 11:45Speaker 1: And where Amanda can find a career that she finds
- 11:48Speaker 1: fulfillment in and the farm is not being sold to
- 11:51Speaker 1: a developer. I really liked that storyline. And you're right,
- 11:55Speaker 1: that's not new.
- 11:55Speaker 2: You know.
- 11:56Speaker 1: We saw something like that in the As Luck would
- 11:59Speaker 1: have It movie with the Ireland Hotel. Yeah, it's got
- 12:02Speaker 1: this location that is so special to these people. And
- 12:05Speaker 1: so again, I don't think Hallmark is particularly great at innovating.
- 12:11Speaker 1: They're not blowing your mind with their storylines. But I
- 12:17Speaker 1: will just say that I found this totally enjoyable, and honestly,
- 12:23Speaker 1: I kind of think it's a good one for the
- 12:24Speaker 1: non Hallmark movie watcher to watch. Oh you think so, Yeah,
- 12:29Speaker 1: I do. Well.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It's definitely one that they can show over and over
- 12:32Speaker 2: again because it's not themed for a particular season.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I hear you.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I like the idea or not the idea. I like
- 12:40Speaker 2: the note about it being more about the family. Definitely
- 12:44Speaker 2: more about that than about the relationship between Amanda and JP,
- 12:50Speaker 2: which to me was like, I have some problems with it.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Are we gonna fight?
- 12:56Speaker 2: No, We're not gonna Maybe.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I thought they had great banter and great chemistry. I
- 13:08Speaker 1: loved the way they just like ribbed each other the
- 13:10Speaker 1: entire time. I really enjoyed their relationship.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Okay, we'll get to that. Okay, all right, let me
- 13:18Speaker 2: tell you I really really liked Christine co. I've never
- 13:21Speaker 2: seen her in anything. I looked her up today. She's
- 13:24Speaker 2: in a ton of things. She's been in like real network,
- 13:29Speaker 2: not real network, but in network TV, a ton of it.
- 13:33Speaker 1: She's a Hallmark newcomer.
- 13:35Speaker 2: She's a Hallmark newcomer. And I liked her. I wrote,
- 13:37Speaker 2: give me more. I thought she was adorable, natural, funny.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Give her a Christmas movie.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Give this chick a Christmas movie. And I almost called
- 13:47Speaker 2: her a B word. But that's not you know, that's
- 13:51Speaker 2: just playful banter. That's totally okay. Anyway, Like in my notes,
- 13:55Speaker 2: I liked west Brown, Lauren Tom. I really enjoyed her.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I thought she was funny as like the kooky, eccentric aunt.
- 14:02Speaker 2: She just made me laugh. She was just like brought
- 14:04Speaker 2: some levity to the Yeah. I don't know, I just
- 14:07Speaker 2: I liked her. I liked her. How about JP's friend,
- 14:10Speaker 2: I don't know what his name is.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I enjoyed him. You know what he reminded me of.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I know what you're gonna say go do it? Uh
- 14:17Speaker 2: uh huh the neighbor on date my dad, Yep, exactly.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I almost thought it was the same dude at first,
- 14:24Speaker 2: and then I was like, no, I don't think that's him.
- 14:25Speaker 1: But he had kind of the same storyline, like he
- 14:28Speaker 1: would have like his dad bod shirts and he Alan. No,
- 14:31Speaker 1: Alan was the other friend. It doesn't matter regardless.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he was funny. I had read somewhere too that
- 14:37Speaker 2: people were like, Okay, we need another movie with him
- 14:40Speaker 2: and Wes Brown, like some sort of like buddy movie. Yeah,
- 14:45Speaker 2: you know, I liked I thought he was funny.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I thought, yeah, really they were a good friend match.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Like in that whole scene when they're like at the
- 14:52Speaker 2: softball game and he's like, watch this, Amanda, come out
- 14:55Speaker 2: here on plate. It's for the kids, and then they're
- 14:59Speaker 2: all chanting man a man. I thought it was really funny. See,
- 15:04Speaker 2: I didn't hate this movie. So just hold your horses there, Darling.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Okay, give it a meh, go ahead.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I know. I got a couple of other funny scenes
- 15:13Speaker 2: that I thought were very enjoyable. Are you ready for them?
- 15:17Speaker 1: Yes?
- 15:18Speaker 2: The microwave scene at the beginning when she's on the
- 15:21Speaker 2: phone with her mom, and her mom's given her a
- 15:23Speaker 2: hard time about like, you you know, you're too busy.
- 15:25Speaker 2: You always eat a microwave food and then like she
- 15:27Speaker 2: pulls it out and takes a bite and it's either
- 15:30Speaker 2: I think it's too cold, and she spits it back
- 15:31Speaker 2: out and puts it back in her microwave. I just
- 15:33Speaker 2: thought that was really funny because super relatable. The spam
- 15:37Speaker 2: phone call she gets while she's a grocery my gosh,
- 15:40Speaker 2: that's my favorite scene from the whole movie. Is it?
- 15:45Speaker 2: Because you can hear the phone call webscene?
- 15:49Speaker 1: Social Security Police, we have a warrant for your arrest.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I love that because who has not gotten that phone call?
- 15:57Speaker 1: It's not sob security Usually it's the irs funniest line
- 16:00Speaker 1: in the movie.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I thought so too. And then the other scene that
- 16:03Speaker 2: I thought was really funny is towards the end when
- 16:06Speaker 2: she's like super caffeinated and she's working on her like
- 16:09Speaker 2: pecan oil pitch or whatever in the kitchen and she's like,
- 16:12Speaker 2: we're out of coffee and we're out of she's talking
- 16:15Speaker 2: about they're all out of food, and then she's like,
- 16:17Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I'm just like whoa. She's explaining how caffeinated
- 16:21Speaker 2: she is, and I was like, that is so relatable,
- 16:23Speaker 2: Like I totally understand. I felt like I had that
- 16:25Speaker 2: moment when I worked with you yesterday. Man, I was
- 16:28Speaker 2: bouncing around your house. So those scenes I really enjoyed
- 16:33Speaker 2: in this movie.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I also enjoyed the goofy broker montage. And now I
- 16:37Speaker 1: know you don't love it when we get too kookie
- 16:40Speaker 1: in these movies. I feel like it walked the line.
- 16:43Speaker 1: It set it up for JP to come in and
- 16:46Speaker 1: be their like straight and narrow broker.
- 16:49Speaker 2: But I liked the three.
- 16:52Speaker 1: People that they used, and I thought they were just
- 16:55Speaker 1: the right side of kookie to make the point.
- 16:59Speaker 2: The guy that was like maybe it was his first
- 17:01Speaker 2: time like selling a house or totally oh yeah that
- 17:04Speaker 2: was That was cute too. The softball scene made me
- 17:08Speaker 2: have some feelings that I'm not comfortable with.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Oh in a good way, Okay.
- 17:16Speaker 2: It just screamed like small town community, we all like
- 17:21Speaker 2: each other, let's do something good for the community and
- 17:26Speaker 2: the kids and whatever, and really made me long for
- 17:30Speaker 2: that in my own life, Like we just don't have that.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Where we live.
- 17:35Speaker 2: We don't hardly talk to our neighbors. You know what,
- 17:37Speaker 2: I mean, so it just I don't know if it's
- 17:40Speaker 2: like the fall season making me really want to go
- 17:44Speaker 2: to a fall festival of fall harvest. I don't know
- 17:48Speaker 2: what it is, but it almost brought me to tears
- 17:50Speaker 2: because I was like, that's what I want from our community.
- 17:55Speaker 1: So my husband, as any long story short listener know,
- 18:01Speaker 1: wants to move to a small town. He would move
- 18:02Speaker 1: tomorrow if I would move. And on vacation a couple
- 18:06Speaker 1: of times we've gone to these like summer league baseball games,
- 18:09Speaker 1: which are usually collegiate leagues, and they're just held basically
- 18:13Speaker 1: in like parks, like at a baseball field, but they're
- 18:16Speaker 1: always free. There's always like a barbecue snack bar, and
- 18:20Speaker 1: there's always some sort of like charity element involved, but
- 18:25Speaker 1: it's all it's just like people come in from the
- 18:27Speaker 1: neighborhood to watch these games and they hang out. And
- 18:29Speaker 1: we went to one and it was Bark in the
- 18:31Speaker 1: Park night and the SPCA was there with all of
- 18:33Speaker 1: their adoptable dogs, and all these people know each other
- 18:36Speaker 1: and they're just there to watch these guys play baseball
- 18:38Speaker 1: and hang out and it's free to attend, and you
- 18:41Speaker 1: you know, your money supports the local something or other
- 18:44Speaker 1: when you buy food, and we do not have that here,
- 18:48Speaker 1: Like there's no summer league baseball that you're gonna go to.
- 18:51Speaker 1: And look, obviously, Southern California has a lot of great things,
- 18:54Speaker 1: but it doesn't have any sort of small town feel.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And whenever I tell Wendy, like, oh, we'reth these tiny
- 19:00Speaker 1: little baseball games, She's like, that sounds miserable, But it
- 19:04Speaker 1: is that feeling that you get there, and I get it,
- 19:08Speaker 1: and I get why he leaves, Like I just want
- 19:10Speaker 1: to live here, So but.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Would it be like that all the time? Would it
- 19:16Speaker 2: be like that all the time?
- 19:18Speaker 1: No? I mean no, because you have to just live
- 19:21Speaker 1: your life, but at least you would have access to that, right.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Yeah. What is so funny is like I never really
- 19:26Speaker 2: gave two thoughts about that before I started watching Hallmark
- 19:28Speaker 2: movies this year and like seeing that and really wish
- 19:33Speaker 2: that we lived that small town feel. I don't know,
- 19:37Speaker 2: it has me thinking, because you know, I went to
- 19:38Speaker 2: a high school football game the other night kind of
- 19:41Speaker 2: hoping for the same thing, and it totally it totally
- 19:44Speaker 2: was not. It was like parents getting ham sandwiched out
- 19:48Speaker 2: in the parking lot.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Before himwiched you know what I mean.
- 19:52Speaker 2: It was just like, really, that's what's happening. You guys
- 19:54Speaker 2: can't just go to a high school football game without
- 19:57Speaker 2: sneaking in a white claw and you're yetty like it.
- 20:00Speaker 2: I just was like, okay, whatever, So anyway, side note, Sorry, no,
- 20:05Speaker 2: I think I like that.
- 20:06Speaker 1: I like that note.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Moving on, Do you have any other things that you
- 20:12Speaker 2: liked about this movie?
- 20:13Speaker 1: I do not. What did you wish for?
- 20:16Speaker 2: Well, okay, this is where we might have a little
- 20:21Speaker 2: bit of fisticuffs here. I did not think that Amanda
- 20:28Speaker 2: and JP had much like sexual chemistry. And I know
- 20:34Speaker 2: we're not sexually watching these movies, but I've I just
- 20:40Speaker 2: want to feel some sort of spark between them. I
- 20:42Speaker 2: thought they had great banter, but I didn't feel like
- 20:47Speaker 2: rekindling of some high school romance, you know.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Okay.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I did think it was funny though, because you know,
- 20:54Speaker 2: one of my biggest pet peeves in these movies is
- 20:56Speaker 2: like when the female lead finds out that the male
- 21:00Speaker 2: lead is coming back and she starts to freak out.
- 21:03Speaker 2: She did have that moment in the grocery store, but
- 21:05Speaker 2: it was relatable because if I saw my high school
- 21:08Speaker 2: boyfriend in a grocery store. I probably would have ran
- 21:10Speaker 2: the other way too, right, So that part I thought
- 21:13Speaker 2: was funny.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Well, often we get those like I don't want to
- 21:17Speaker 1: see this person, and it's like the brother of the groom,
- 21:19Speaker 1: and they act shocked when they show up in an event,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and I felt like this was well done. Right, she
- 21:23Speaker 1: was not expecting to run into him, she didn't know
- 21:25Speaker 1: he had moved back. And then of course she the
- 21:27Speaker 1: first time she's in town. I would have run away
- 21:29Speaker 1: from somebody too, Although I did think, oh, like, at
- 21:32Speaker 1: least she looks cute. Right at last, she's in her
- 21:34Speaker 1: pajamas rolling out to get something for breakfast, so totally totally,
- 21:38Speaker 1: and she looks great throughout this entire movie. I was
- 21:40Speaker 1: really envious of her glowing skin.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it must be that pecan oil. The other thing
- 21:45Speaker 2: I wished for was like her revelation that pecan oil
- 21:50Speaker 2: can become a product was not that surprising, you know,
- 21:57Speaker 2: Like she grew up on this far, did she not?
- 22:00Speaker 2: How would she not know that? Like the aunt was
- 22:03Speaker 2: using pecan oil as like a moisturizer.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I hear you, And just to play devil's advocate to that,
- 22:08Speaker 1: I will have a question, And I wonder if prior
- 22:12Speaker 1: to your twenties, like during the time that you lived
- 22:16Speaker 1: at home, Yeah, were you regularly moisturizing your hands before bed? No?
- 22:21Speaker 1: So I hear you, And my question is I did
- 22:24Speaker 1: not keep handlation next to my bed as a teenager
- 22:27Speaker 1: living at home. And so if you think of like
- 22:29Speaker 1: she moved out to go to college and probably hasn't
- 22:32Speaker 1: come back, and now she's in this phase of life
- 22:34Speaker 1: where they show like part of her nighttime routine as
- 22:37Speaker 1: many of us, I try and make it part of mine,
- 22:39Speaker 1: but half the time I'm lazy is to you know,
- 22:42Speaker 1: massage r you know, oil into your hands before you
- 22:45Speaker 1: go to bed. Maybe it just wasn't on our radar, right, Like,
- 22:47Speaker 1: maybe she wasn't even aware that her aunt used that,
- 22:49Speaker 1: and she probably didn't grow up in her aunt's home.
- 22:52Speaker 2: True. I'm just saying, fine, you make good points. Fine, fine, fine,
- 22:59Speaker 2: And now I'm wondering, are there beauty products with pecan
- 23:04Speaker 2: oil in it? I hear you googling.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Pecan oil can make a great moisturizer for dry skin,
- 23:12Speaker 1: lighter and less comatogenic than olive oil and coconut oil,
- 23:16Speaker 1: making it suitable for use in oil cleansing or as
- 23:19Speaker 1: a face moisturizer.
- 23:21Speaker 2: All right, that's very interesting because there are people with
- 23:25Speaker 2: such allergies to tree nuts m hmm, that you would
- 23:29Speaker 2: have to be very aware of your ingredients in there, hmm.
- 23:33Speaker 1: And maybe that's why. Maybe they don't use it as
- 23:35Speaker 1: an additive for that reason. Maybe they just sell like
- 23:38Speaker 1: coconut oil, pecancoba oil.
- 23:41Speaker 2: I mean, I think a trip to the Thompson family
- 23:44Speaker 2: farm is in order.
- 23:46Speaker 1: To see do they they sell pecan oil?
- 23:48Speaker 2: I bet you they do. I bet you they do.
- 23:53Speaker 2: I didn't know you could cook with it. I've never
- 23:54Speaker 2: seen it. I'm gonna have to look at the grocery
- 23:56Speaker 2: store and see if it's, you know, sold at the market.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Yeah, go to mother's.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Oh okay.
- 24:03Speaker 1: So the only thing I really wished for is there
- 24:06Speaker 1: are a couple of scenes, and I understand their purpose
- 24:10Speaker 1: of Amanda getting into bed and moisturizing her hands, and
- 24:13Speaker 1: there's one scene where it cuts from JP and his
- 24:16Speaker 1: friend at the bar. There's like a scene of her
- 24:19Speaker 1: moisturizing her hands and going to bed with her winsome moisturizer,
- 24:24Speaker 1: and then she wakes up the next morning and then
- 24:27Speaker 1: she's by herself. There's no conversation. It's just to like
- 24:29Speaker 1: set the tone. But I feel like it was a
- 24:33Speaker 1: thrown in scene, like we need to make it clear that,
- 24:36Speaker 1: like she moisturizes her hands every night, and then when
- 24:40Speaker 1: she runs out of her moisturizer, then she goes looking
- 24:44Speaker 1: for her aunt's pecan oil. I'm just not sure that
- 24:46Speaker 1: the one standalone scene of her moisturizing her hands every
- 24:50Speaker 1: night was necessary to us understanding the follow up scene
- 24:55Speaker 1: several minutes later, when she realizes she's out of moisturizer
- 24:59Speaker 1: and goes to find some else's. I just think maybe
- 25:02Speaker 1: we could have made that connection. I just that scene.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I didn't love it. It just felt like, oh, let's
- 25:08Speaker 1: toss this in here. Okay, that makes sense, that's all.
- 25:12Speaker 2: That's all all right, Moving on to did you see that?
- 25:17Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, can I go first?
- 25:20Speaker 2: Yes?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Please. When we talk about these movies, we often talk
- 25:24Speaker 1: about the Hallmark Movies app, which shows you upcoming movies
- 25:28Speaker 1: and past movies and information about movies. And when they
- 25:30Speaker 1: show you the upcoming movies, they will show you the
- 25:33Speaker 1: image for the movie, and often the image for the
- 25:38Speaker 1: movie is simply a stock photo with text over because
- 25:42Speaker 1: they haven't these movies are produced on such a tight
- 25:44Speaker 1: timeline that they have not created the movie image yet
- 25:47Speaker 1: and it doesn't exist. And I have often joked, oh,
- 25:50Speaker 1: they just pulled a Canva stock image and threw some
- 25:53Speaker 1: text on it for these right, So imagine my surprise
- 25:58Speaker 1: when we open on the scene in the in some
- 26:00Speaker 1: cosmetics conference room and the giant images on the wall
- 26:06Speaker 1: are stock photos straight from Canva. And how I know
- 26:11Speaker 1: that because we've used them in some of our kind images.
- 26:16Speaker 2: I'm gonna have to go back and look.
- 26:18Speaker 1: But here's the other thing.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Oh my god, so funny ahead.
- 26:22Speaker 1: So many of them are of makeup because this is
- 26:27Speaker 1: a skincare company. At no point do they talk about makeup.
- 26:31Speaker 1: They sell skincare. They are real big on their moisturizer,
- 26:35Speaker 1: but they're a skincare company. And all the images they
- 26:37Speaker 1: have some like pretty faces just smiling. And I don't
- 26:40Speaker 1: know if those women are also just stock photos. It's
- 26:42Speaker 1: entirely possible they are. But there's like an image of
- 26:46Speaker 1: makeup brushes with makeup spilled on the counter that's straight
- 26:49Speaker 1: up a stock image from Canva. And it's like anybody
- 26:55Speaker 1: with a twelve ninety nine Canva Pro subscription can blow
- 26:57Speaker 1: this up and print it out. But you are a
- 27:00Speaker 1: skincare company. Why do we have photos of makeup on
- 27:02Speaker 1: the wall. Because I think the ideas were supposed to
- 27:04Speaker 1: believe like this is their makeup. They created mock up products,
- 27:09Speaker 1: they had products with labels. They couldn't have had someone
- 27:12Speaker 1: take a photo and blow that up. All I'm saying
- 27:15Speaker 1: is anyone with an eagle eye would have recognized those
- 27:19Speaker 1: Canva stock photos. Wow.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I might have to go back and look just out
- 27:25Speaker 2: of curiosity.
- 27:26Speaker 1: That's really funny, agreem at you.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Oh too funny? All right, So Amanda Jpre were supposed
- 27:32Speaker 2: to be high school sweethearts? No, yes, oh right, well
- 27:37Speaker 2: in real life, Wes Brown is thirty nine years old
- 27:40Speaker 2: and Christine co is thirty three. These two would have
- 27:43Speaker 2: never been high school together.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Ever, that's like straight up. They always cast the dudes
- 27:48Speaker 1: can play younger. I guess looking at them, it wasn't shocking.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I would have believed that they were roughly the same age.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I would have believed that she was not even thirty yet.
- 27:59Speaker 2: I think she looks very young.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I well, she just has that beautiful glowing scin yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 1: uh huh, but yeah, well I don't know, they're not give.
- 28:11Speaker 2: It to me. I need I need somebody to pay
- 28:13Speaker 2: attention to the details. You know, here's a detail that
- 28:17Speaker 2: I did appreciate. When Amanda got to her aunt's house,
- 28:22Speaker 2: they took off their shoes and the ant put slippers on,
- 28:26Speaker 2: and I just really appreciated this very important tradition within
- 28:36Speaker 2: Asian families is that you remove your shoes when you
- 28:39Speaker 2: go into the house. I did some googling as to why.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I assumed it was hygiene. Sometimes it's etiquette. There's very
- 28:47Speaker 2: very amongst what I found, but it was like etiquette hygiene.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Sometimes it's like you remove your stuff as you're going
- 28:54Speaker 2: into a personal space. I just really like that they
- 28:58Speaker 2: you know, this is obviously an age family, and I
- 29:01Speaker 2: love that they showed some like actually real life. I
- 29:04Speaker 2: don't want to use the word tradition. What's what's the
- 29:06Speaker 2: word I'm using. What's what am I looking for? Megan?
- 29:10Speaker 1: I think tradition is fine. I almost wonder if Lauren
- 29:13Speaker 1: Tom was like, hey, I should tick my shoes off now, folks.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I wonder I would love to know, like
- 29:19Speaker 2: who decided, Like who decided on that? I don't know.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I just liked it. I liked it. And speaking of shoes,
- 29:25Speaker 2: there were a lot of scenes, you know, we criticized
- 29:28Speaker 2: previous movies, even in the summer nights, where somebody's walking
- 29:32Speaker 2: down a dusty road and they got like platform shoes
- 29:34Speaker 2: on or whatever.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 29:35Speaker 2: They were wearing tennis shoes in the orchard and I
- 29:38Speaker 2: was like, yay, somebody paid attention.
- 29:41Speaker 1: And no wedges in the orchard.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Exactly exactly.
- 29:46Speaker 1: This is only tangentially related to the movie. But I
- 29:49Speaker 1: have to say, are the Chesapeake Shores promos calling to
- 29:53Speaker 1: you or what.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Kind of because they have a good cast, yes, yeah,
- 29:59Speaker 2: especially has that older man I can't remember his.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Name, Hey Williams.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Yes, it has him in it. He's like a legitimate
- 30:08Speaker 2: actor actor. But then they have a lot of nice
- 30:11Speaker 2: familiar faces of yes from movies that I liked this summer.
- 30:16Speaker 2: But isn't that like a year serie series series like
- 30:22Speaker 2: Win Calls the Heart, like every year there's like people
- 30:24Speaker 2: in it.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Yes, so it began in twenty sixteen. There are according
- 30:30Speaker 1: to IMDb, there are thirty nine episodes.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Oh, I can tear through thirty nine antisodes.
- 30:35Speaker 1: That's not a problem.
- 30:36Speaker 2: That's no problem for me.
- 30:38Speaker 1: And but it has a great cast, like you said,
- 30:42Speaker 1: and a number of these people has a huge cast,
- 30:45Speaker 1: which I kind of like because then we can just
- 30:47Speaker 1: keep the story. It's like a soap opera, like a
- 30:50Speaker 1: Hallmark soap opera. Yeah, but it's just got this great
- 30:55Speaker 1: cast of all these beautiful people and Brendan Penny in it,
- 31:01Speaker 1: Jesse Metcalf.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Mm hmm from a Desperate Housewives. Yes, he's in a
- 31:07Speaker 2: bunch of like, uh, murder mystery shows on the Hallmark
- 31:10Speaker 2: right channel.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, anyway, I might want to watch it.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Do I want to just start this season? Do I
- 31:22Speaker 2: need to go back and watch the other maybe?
- 31:24Speaker 1: Maybe we just start now. I don't know that we
- 31:26Speaker 1: need to go back. And it's not like a murder mystery,
- 31:29Speaker 1: so if you decide to go back, it's not like,
- 31:31Speaker 1: oh it's been spoiled.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, all right, if you guys watch it,
- 31:37Speaker 2: email us at Megan and Wendy at gmail dot com
- 31:39Speaker 2: and tell us if it's worth giving some time to.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Yeah, do we need to go all the way back
- 31:44Speaker 1: to the beginning? And can we even go back all
- 31:46Speaker 1: the way to the beginning? Yeah?
- 31:47Speaker 2: Who knows where it's available? Yeah, yeah, exactly exactly. Is
- 31:51Speaker 2: that all you have for? Did you see that?
- 31:53Speaker 1: That's all I have? You?
- 31:54Speaker 2: Ready to rate this bad Boy?
- 31:56Speaker 1: I give it three stars, solid, three stars, I recommend it.
- 32:01Speaker 2: I give it two ouch.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Ouch, I ow, it's worse than that movie last week.
- 32:09Speaker 1: That week hated that I'd forgotten the name of already
- 32:12Speaker 1: little daytime drama. No oh, what.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Did I give that? I don't know. Let me look
- 32:18Speaker 2: and see what I gave that movie, because I would say, oh, that's.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Hard, that was boring to me, that was boring to me,
- 32:26Speaker 1: and that this movie did not bore me.
- 32:29Speaker 2: I'm looking back at my notes here to see when
- 32:32Speaker 2: I gave that movie.
- 32:33Speaker 1: This movie had banter, which is what I said I
- 32:35Speaker 1: really wanted from a little daytime drama.
- 32:37Speaker 2: I gave it something in the twos. I don't have
- 32:39Speaker 2: my notes here. I ah, okay, I gave it two
- 32:43Speaker 2: and a half stars. How about that.
- 32:45Speaker 1: You can give it whatever you want.
- 32:47Speaker 2: It was better than a little daytime drama.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Yeah, but I would say on par same kind of movie, though, huh,
- 32:58Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 32:59Speaker 1: That's fine. Come to your opinion.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I know I wrong, Okay, Well, I kind of just
- 33:04Speaker 2: wish like they started out the second reincarnation of Summer
- 33:08Speaker 2: Nights like with a bang, like I love the first
- 33:11Speaker 2: two movies, and then this is kind of like, let's
- 33:15Speaker 2: finish it up.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Well. I just opened the Hallmark app so I could
- 33:18Speaker 1: find the name of the next movie, and it immediately
- 33:22Speaker 1: prompts me to add the Fall Harvest movies to my
- 33:28Speaker 1: watch list.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Oh okay, there are six of.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Them and me. They begin on Saturday, September eleventh. But
- 33:36Speaker 1: but I would like to tell you that of the six,
- 33:39Speaker 1: how many would you guess have images.
- 33:44Speaker 2: One correct?
- 33:47Speaker 1: Next week is the final movie in the Summer Night series.
- 33:51Speaker 1: It is Journey of My Heart. It stars Rhiann and
- 33:53Speaker 1: Fish and Darien Martin, both of whom are new to me,
- 33:57Speaker 1: and it is about a wildlife biologist to travels to
- 34:00Speaker 1: Alaska and receives guidance from a Native American family. Hallmark,
- 34:04Speaker 1: I am trusting you with this movie. I hope you
- 34:07Speaker 1: treat this well. I hope you had some advising on
- 34:11Speaker 1: including a Native American family and whatever advice they're going
- 34:15Speaker 1: to be offering is all I'm saying.
- 34:18Speaker 2: I agree, Yeah, I hope. I don't have high hopes
- 34:22Speaker 2: for this one because it doesn't have like a big,
- 34:25Speaker 2: a big name, right m hm. So we'll see, and
- 34:29Speaker 2: I think it was a late addition to the summer
- 34:31Speaker 2: night's lineup too.
- 34:32Speaker 1: We live back next week to discuss that. You may
- 34:35Speaker 1: have noticed there was no Tuesday episode of the podcast
- 34:37Speaker 1: this week due to technical difficulties. We recorded one. It
- 34:40Speaker 1: sounded terrible, we could not put it out, so we
- 34:43Speaker 1: will be re recording that episode and it will come
- 34:46Speaker 1: out next Tuesday, So we hope you'll come back for that.
- 34:49Speaker 1: If you are not following our podcast in the Apple
- 34:52Speaker 1: podcast app or the podcast listening app of your choice,
- 34:54Speaker 1: I recommend you do that because then you immediately get
- 34:57Speaker 1: every episode delivered straight to y And if you have
- 35:01Speaker 1: any thoughts on these movies, you can email us at
- 35:04Speaker 1: Megan and Wendy at gmail dot com and we'll see
- 35:06Speaker 1: you next time. Guys.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Bye bye,
