- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, welcome back to Inside the Data. On Inside the Birds,
- 0:13I'm Jeff Mosher, and of course we're talking data. We
- 0:16bring on our we bring in our analytics expert, Sam Finkel.
- 0:20And for those who might be new to the show
- 0:22with a new season, Sam has been doing an excellent
- 0:24job helping us view the Philadelphia Eagles through a different lens,
- 0:28a advanced analytical lens, and he's gonna be with us
- 0:32all throughout this Eagles season once a week and then
- 0:35we're gonna dissect the game that was maybe preview the
- 0:39game that will be all through an analytical lens. So Sam,
- 0:44not much changed for the Eagles new season, one to
- 0:46zero and the way they won was kind of a
- 0:49very Eagles regular season waves, almost unspectacular, but get the
- 0:53job done twenty four to twenty over the Cowboys Thursday night.
- 0:57And now seems like it's been two weeks, but that
- 1:00was the season opener. And are you ready to take
- 1:02a nice deep dive into That's what the stats says it.
- 1:07The most important stat is not an advanced analytical one.
- 1:09It's one The Eagles are one, right, Yes, hey, winds
- 1:15are hard. Go ask the Baltimore Ravens. They had a
- 1:17pretty big lead in the fourth quarter against the Bills,
- 1:19and then lo and behold they fumble right Derrick Henry
- 1:22and then all hell breaks loose. It made me think
- 1:25of the Eagles, right, and how how unspectaclo They can
- 1:28look offensively at times, but they don't turn the ball
- 1:31over and they don't allow for comebacks like that because
- 1:35of it.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, the signal caller cares about, you know,
- 1:39winning no matter what, and that shows.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Awesome good stuff. So like we do remind the viewers
- 1:45and the listeners, we will show some For those who
- 1:49watch on YouTube, we'll go through all of SAM charts
- 1:52and for those who are listening, we'll do our best
- 1:54to describe what we are seeing on the charts and
- 1:58SAM I like that. The first thing that we always
- 2:00do is we don't go way into the data. We
- 2:03just take a little bit of a look at the
- 2:07raw data, as we call it, right, the stuff that's
- 2:09available on ESPN dot House box score. But there are
- 2:12things that jump out and we just go through that
- 2:15really quickly. So when you looked at the basic stats,
- 2:18anything jump out to you. There were a couple of
- 2:20things that hit me.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, first and foremost, I was doing a
- 2:25little bit of tweeting during the game, which is a
- 2:26little bit unusual for me. I've never really done that before.
- 2:29It's just a little bit new, so appreciate it. You
- 2:31have to handle give the handle out. Oh yeah, Sam
- 2:33underscore Finkle. But one of the things that jumped out
- 2:37to me, especially early and especially so this game really
- 2:40was a game of two halves, and the halves were
- 2:43not divided by halftime, so I mean, truly they score.
- 2:47There was a score every possession until that delay, and
- 2:52then it was a very defensive game, which kind of
- 2:55makes sense. There was some extra time to make some
- 2:56defensive adjustments. But what the game seemed to come down
- 2:59to is possessions and time of possession, and so what
- 3:04the Eagles did a really good job of was making
- 3:07their possessions last long time. So if you look at
- 3:10the time of possession, which is the last stat, it's
- 3:13thirty four fifty two for the Eagles and twenty five
- 3:17oh eight. And I really thought this game was going
- 3:19to come down, like just watching it was going to
- 3:20come down to who can hold the ball the longest time.
- 3:23And I think that is kind of one of the
- 3:26contributing factors to why the Eagles won this game.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah, for a game that was so close, I feel
- 3:31like the possession was fairly lopsided for a game that close,
- 3:35with the Eagles holding the ball almost thirty five minutes
- 3:37for the Cowboys twenty five minutes. That's a good point.
- 3:41One of the things that jumped out to me, Sam
- 3:43was that for a game that was only twenty four
- 3:45to twenty forty four total points, you had both teams
- 3:49over sixty percent in third down efficiency, which you know
- 3:54usually if you're going to have that, and both teams
- 3:56having high completion percentages over sixty there. Yeah, I mean,
- 4:00when when both teams convert third downs that's such a
- 4:04high rate, usually you see like a seesaw affair with
- 4:07a lot of points, you know, not a sort of
- 4:10a defensive battle. So it's almost as if the third
- 4:12down efficiency is a little bit of an outlier compared
- 4:16to how the game went.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I really agree with that, and I think it
- 4:21shows in the statuet, right, I mean, what you just
- 4:24said proves that point for sure.
- 4:27Speaker 1: But in the red zone too, I mean, both teams
- 4:28were highly efficient in the red zone. The Eagles were
- 4:30three or three the Cowboys were two of three. I mean,
- 4:32if again, if you're just looking at the raw data here,
- 4:36you'd be like, oh, if you didn't even look at
- 4:37total yards, you'd be man, there's you know, must have
- 4:41been must have been a game where everybody's catching passes
- 4:43and no just ceedee lamb. Really yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 2: But then if you look at the total yards, I
- 4:48mean they're only five yards apart, right, three oh two
- 4:50for the Eagles, three oh seven for the Cowboys. So
- 4:53I mean, by all metrics, it was a close game.
- 4:56It was as close of a game as you saw,
- 4:59as the statuet showed.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what we talked about. The the
- 5:02Derrick Henry turnover, the Miles Sanders turnover really swung the
- 5:06game because if that he doesn't fumble there, then who
- 5:11knows if they go in and score, they go to
- 5:13score the goal ahead touchdown, who knows what kind of
- 5:16you know, momentum that takes away. The Eagles obviously got
- 5:19a big jolt of it, and then of course a
- 5:21lightning delay then they had to withstand that. But that
- 5:24would have been that's part of winning and losing those
- 5:26turnover battles, and that that was a big part of this.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And I'm really glad you mentioned that because we'll talk
- 5:32about it a little bit later, but that Sanders fumble
- 5:35was really set up by Zach Bond's chase down.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, absolutely, And I love the fact that you
- 5:41have a really interesting stat on that chase down that
- 5:45we will get to in a second. So anything else
- 5:47in the basic stats that you wanted to go through.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, the only thing that I really want to mention
- 5:53is something that fans already know about, and it's the penalties. Mm.
- 5:58So if you look at the penalties, the Eagles had
- 6:01nine for one hundred and ten yards. Yeah, the Cowboys
- 6:04had four for forty two. Something that's got to get
- 6:05cleaned up, right, it felt. I mean, look, we didn't
- 6:09even say the Carter suspension yet in this video, or
- 6:13I guess it's an ejection hopefully not a suspension. But
- 6:19there needs to be more discipline by the Eagles unit,
- 6:21which is kind of a weird thing to say, because
- 6:23I feel like the Eagles have done a pretty good
- 6:25job of being disciplined the past couple of years, but
- 6:28really got to clean some things up on that front.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely. Coaches will have told me that if you
- 6:35have over one hundred yards and penalties. Since that's an
- 6:38entire football field, that's like an extra score for the opponent.
- 6:43So if it was twenty four to twenty, if you
- 6:46theoretically didn't have any penalties, you could consider it a
- 6:50twenty four to thirteen win type win. That's how coaches
- 6:53view it. So you're right, they have to clean that
- 6:55up and we'll see what happens there. Let's get into
- 6:59the advance stats, everybody's favorite numbers EPA, QBP, all that
- 7:05stuff that we have to remind everybody with what it
- 7:07all means before we start. So EPA describe again for
- 7:11any of our new listeners what EPA means.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's a metric of like expected points added
- 7:18based on you know, down distance, field position. It takes
- 7:21these numbers in like every play that you have. Does
- 7:24it put you in a position to score? Not every
- 7:27play is equal, but if it contributes to to you know,
- 7:31moving the chains and contributing, it ends up, you know,
- 7:35saying points should be scored in an expected It's an
- 7:38algorithm that does it, and it's a pretty widely accepted
- 7:42advanced statistic, right, and.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Every single play carries a specific numerical quantificare even if
- 7:48it's if it's a three yard run, if it's an
- 7:51incomplete pay right, every single play is either a plus.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Or minus of a number correct, correct, And it's all
- 7:57about keeping your drive on track and putting you in
- 7:59a position score. Which is interesting because like, not all
- 8:03touchdowns are worth the same either, right, So like a
- 8:06long touchdown is worth a lot more than a short
- 8:08touchdown because you're not expected to score long touchdowns very often.
- 8:12So putting that in perspective, that's kind of a good
- 8:15way to understand EPA.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Got it. So I guess what jumps out to me
- 8:19as we look at the first three EPA per play,
- 8:21per pass, and per rush is that the Eagles are
- 8:24all in the green plus point one four per play,
- 8:28plus point zero five per pass, and plus point one
- 8:31nine per rush. As to the post of the Cowboys,
- 8:33well go minus zero point three, minus zero point two,
- 8:37minus zero point four. And I think that surprises me
- 8:39a little bit, and I'll have you explain why, but
- 8:42only because this is sort of a measure of efficiency
- 8:46of offense. I thought Dallas moved the ball fairly efficiently
- 8:49with the run, and obviously the turnover probably waits some
- 8:52of this. It does on the rush, especially heavily because
- 8:55it was a fumble. But Ceedee Lamb alone is efficiency
- 9:00moving the ball, although he did have drops two makes
- 9:03this very interesting. I would not have thought that the
- 9:05Eagles were the more highly efficient offense, except when you
- 9:09take into account they didn't turn the ball over.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean drops do impact it. And there
- 9:15are some things that I just while we're talking, I'm
- 9:18gonna pull up CD Lambs EPA.
- 9:22Speaker 1: That's interesting because he had so many yards, so many catches,
- 9:25but he had three at least three maybe four drops
- 9:28that were critical.
- 9:30Speaker 2: So his EPA per target was plus zero point one
- 9:33five despite the target. So the rest of the team
- 9:35was kind of laying it, letting them down. And just
- 9:37because they moved the ball efficiently, which again you'd think
- 9:41that that would reflect in the EPA. To me, that's
- 9:44a product. It's to me, it's indicative of play design
- 9:47to some extent because you know, or really execution. It
- 9:51could be either one or both. That they were taking
- 9:55a lot of short options, and I do think when
- 9:58I was watching the game that that's I saw as well.
- 10:01You know, Dak was doing a lot of short plays
- 10:03that you know, kept kept the drive going, but it
- 10:05wasn't anything crazy. And when you do short you know options,
- 10:11you know, you hit your receivers really not that deep,
- 10:14you're not necessarily keeping the drive on track.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And again you wouldn't you. Also, I would have said
- 10:19that that was the Eagles approach as well. They were.
- 10:22There was only one pass thrown by Jillen Hurts more
- 10:25than nine yards and that was Yeah, I know, that
- 10:28was the only one that traveled more than nine yards
- 10:30in the air. So they they were similarly very short,
- 10:33very quick, and just sort of deliberate and methodical.
- 10:36Speaker 2: But what I think is the game changer is Hurts
- 10:39to Scrambles. I think that Hurts to Scrambles probably had
- 10:43the highest EPA per play of any play that the
- 10:46Eagles offensive, besides that Johan Dotson right deep shot, and
- 10:50besides touchdowns obviously, but I think that was the biggest
- 10:53game changer in terms like if you look at that
- 10:56EPA per rush, it's plus zero point one nine, and
- 10:59I think which is very high. I think most of
- 11:02it can be attributed to hurt to scrambles.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Sure, because I would think that if you took Saquon
- 11:08Barkley's EPA per rush, it's not nearly as good because
- 11:11he did not have statistically, on average, a good game.
- 11:15I think he averaged less than three and a half per.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Carry, right, And I can pull that up for us
- 11:20while we're talking, if you want to take the lead
- 11:24really quick.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Sure, So the EPA per rush is the highest
- 11:28of all the six numbers, you know, between the two
- 11:30teams that we're dealing with. And I'm going to assume again,
- 11:34and you know more about this stuff than me, that
- 11:35the fact that two of hurts his Russia is turned
- 11:39into actual points on the play two rushing touchdowns, I
- 11:42would imagine, makes that the way you know, the weight
- 11:46even bigger and brings that number up because they are
- 11:48directly This is an expected points added number and those
- 11:54led to direct.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Points absolutely, And I think you're absolutely right on that.
- 11:59And I think that Hurts is scrambling ability and running
- 12:03ability was the big difference maker in the game in general,
- 12:07And it's kind of nice when you can see that
- 12:08on the stat sheet.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 2: But Saquan's EPA per attempt was minus point one two
- 12:15minus point one two, wow, so not a great game.
- 12:20But Hertz's was plus zero point five to seven, just
- 12:24for context, so you can kind of see where some
- 12:26of these numbers come from.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Definitely, let's move on to the TTT.
- 12:31Speaker 2: I hate the stat and love it you do, but
- 12:34I have to include it because I think it's important.
- 12:37But it just doesn't tell you much. Right, so your
- 12:39time to throw is quite literally that your time to
- 12:42throw right, but it doesn't factor in you know, offenses
- 12:45that like to get the ball out quickly. It doesn't
- 12:48like it. There's so many different things, like the offensive
- 12:50line could give you more time, you could be buying time,
- 12:52or you could just be holding onto the ball too long.
- 12:55There's so many things. It just it's a in a vacuum.
- 12:57It's a terrible stat. Hopefully we do a good job
- 13:00here contextualizing it and saying like, here's what it was.
- 13:04Here's kind of why you know, three point one seven
- 13:08for Hurts and two point nine to five for Dak,
- 13:11And I think a lot of it was Dak was
- 13:13getting the ball out pretty quickly. I think that was
- 13:15pretty like that. You saw that pretty evidently throughout the game.
- 13:20And I don't think there's that much of a difference
- 13:22between three point one seven to two point nine to five.
- 13:24I mean there there is, but Hurts did have a
- 13:27decent amount of time. I think, as we'll talk about,
- 13:30the offensive line play was okay. Yeah, there were a
- 13:34lot of issues. I know you did a little bit
- 13:36of tweets on the offensive line and some of the
- 13:38issues if you wanted to talk about that for a second.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know we did inside the tape with
- 13:42Greg co Sell little. We don't know if it's been
- 13:46out yet on this platform. I forget on days that
- 13:49we run everything. But it wasn't the greatest offensive line
- 13:52performance in past Pro even Lane Johnson struggled a little bit.
- 13:56Cam Jurgens Landon Dickerson, who you know, came out of
- 13:59the game game with a backflare up again had to
- 14:02be replaced by Brett Toath. So nothing like overly concerning.
- 14:05I remember a couple of years ago they played the
- 14:07Patriots in the season opener and barely won that game
- 14:09over a Patriots team that won three games that year,
- 14:13and that the offensive line really struggled in that game.
- 14:16I think Josh Uche was still playing for the Patriots
- 14:18that year. So every once in a while you see
- 14:20it and it's the first game of the year. So
- 14:23not putting too much into it, but yeah, it was not.
- 14:25It was not your vintage Eagles offensive line game.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess, good thing Micah wasn't there.
- 14:30Speaker 1: No, that's true. Although I will tell you this from
- 14:34that angle, and this goes back to the Hurts rushing
- 14:37touchdowns and something we discussed on other shows. I thought
- 14:40the Cowboys did a poor job of rushing the quarterback
- 14:44with discipline, meaning they would turn their one time Eziaku
- 14:50did on the ten yard touchdown and on the four
- 14:52yard touchdown run by Hurtz. It was who's the veteran
- 14:55pass rusher they have. I can't remember his name. He's
- 14:58like the only guy on the team who's been around
- 14:59for a while. Well, oh, I can't remember his name.
- 15:02I'll remember it while we're talking about it. But either way,
- 15:05they would have their rushers go inside the tackle instead
- 15:09of and when you go inside the tackle, you leave
- 15:11the outside open, and that's where Hurts both times broke
- 15:14for his touchdown. So I thought they stopped doing that
- 15:18in the second half, and then well you saw more
- 15:21sacks and the Eagles offense kind of hit the skids
- 15:24there because I thought Dante Feller is the guy who
- 15:27I was thinking that's what.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I thought you were talking about, but I was yeah, sure.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought you know, for a veteran to go
- 15:32inside lane Johnson instead of staying outside and keeping Hurts,
- 15:35Hurts has to see that color on the outside right.
- 15:38If you see, if he sees you coming at you
- 15:40through his his left shoulder, he's going to run to
- 15:42the right. And that's exactly what he did. And on
- 15:43the ten yard he ran to the left when Ezraku
- 15:46came inside. So that was bad rush disciplined by the Cowboys.
- 15:50Speaker 2: One thing I'm pretty sure you were the person that
- 15:52tweeted this during the game is one of the adjustments
- 15:55you noted was the fact that the rushing lanes became
- 15:57a lot tighter.
- 15:58Speaker 1: They did they stopped trying, They did more twisting and
- 16:01something in the middle, which kind of creates that traffic
- 16:04for Hurts to not be able to step up as
- 16:07much or run through the middle, and then didn't get
- 16:10as wide with their edge rushing lanes, and then they
- 16:13sent a little bit more pressure in the second half
- 16:15sort of speed up the clock. So if Hurts wanted
- 16:18a run because of the pressure, he didn't see those big,
- 16:20wide open lanes, and that's where he tends to sometimes
- 16:23get stuck in the pocket and take the sacks, which
- 16:25he did a lot of last year.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and I just thought that was an excellent insight
- 16:30without even having the ALL twenty two available to you yet,
- 16:33so definitely.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Why I was at the game, so I did have
- 16:35the ALL. I was there, you can see the whole thing.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Yeah, But I mean, like doing that live versus like
- 16:42sitting at your computer is a big difference. And I
- 16:46think that was a cool thing, that an insight that
- 16:48you found, and I think it's worth sharing that that
- 16:50was a big part of the adjustment.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you, And then it's actually happened quite a
- 16:54bit over the last I feel like sometimes teams forget
- 16:59that they have to be really disciplined against Hurts with
- 17:01their rush lanes, and then he reminds them and then
- 17:04they make the adjustments. Yeah, the Packers. It reminded me
- 17:08a little bit about the Packers Wild Card game, where
- 17:10if you remember, the Eagles moved the ball really well
- 17:13in the first quarter. I think the first two drives
- 17:16they did, Hurts was getting outside the pocket, and then
- 17:18they completely changed after that. They started they threw a
- 17:22couple of cover zeros at Hurts, I don't know if
- 17:24you remember that, and the offense got stagnant until he
- 17:27popped that swing pass to Goddar, who you know had
- 17:30that long touchdown stiff arming the guy times on the
- 17:33way down. But they definitely got their offense out of
- 17:36sync by doing that.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and deaf Cowboys definitely tried. It's kind of interesting.
- 17:42The Cowboys ran like entirely zone that game, which we'll
- 17:46talk about, but it's it's it's an interesting concept. I mean,
- 17:50they married it up with some interesting pressures, but it
- 17:52was an interesting way to attack the Eagles. And we'll
- 17:56talk about the efficiency of that soon.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Lie a lot on a front flour rush if you're
- 18:01gonna do that, but by play almost exclusively zone, and
- 18:05that's usually tough against the Eagles because they're five does
- 18:07a pretty good job a blocking four. But it is
- 18:11a good approach because you know, you make Hurts have
- 18:13to try to throw into certain windows that he's not
- 18:15always comfortable throwing into.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Sure, and that definitely was part of the game. Quickly
- 18:22with the pressures obviously fourteen to twelve, you know, forty
- 18:28two point six percent of pressure on Hurts and thirty
- 18:33four point three percent on DOK. That needs to get better.
- 18:35Obviously on both ends, you'd I mean, a third of
- 18:40pressure is pretty good. Uh, but you don't want to
- 18:43be pressured forty two percent of the time. You know
- 18:46that's not ideal. And one of them led to a sack. Obviously.
- 18:50You know something that's a little bit interesting I would
- 18:53say is if I told you the average separation for
- 18:56the receivers the Eagles won that, I think you'd call
- 18:59me crazy.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I was shocked to given what we saw from Ceedee
- 19:04Lamb and only one big play from the Eagles offense. Yeah,
- 19:08I was surprised to see this.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean four point four to three, I
- 19:12mean that's pretty telling there. And then let's talk a
- 19:17little bit about the run. Run success is just how
- 19:22so like there's a bunch of different ways to calculate success.
- 19:26When I was at Penn State, I was an assistant
- 19:29coach there, we used like we use fixed numbers. We
- 19:34use like you had to get forty percent, then fifty percent,
- 19:37then one hundred percent or one hundred percent. That was
- 19:39like the metric we use for efficiency.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Right towards first down.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Is that yeah, Yeah, And obviously it would be different
- 19:47if you were on the goal line. So like the
- 19:48way you division it is like do you get four
- 19:50yards in the first play, then it's the second play.
- 19:54Do you get half of what you need to get
- 19:55on second down? On the third place, do you pick
- 19:57it up? Fourth down? Do you pick it up? That's
- 19:59kind of where that comes from, right. I use next
- 20:01gen stats run success Metric, and all that is is
- 20:05anytime you generate a positive EPA. Okay, which is kind
- 20:10of similar, but like even a plus zero point one
- 20:14would constitute success. So like success just means like do
- 20:18you keep your drive on track? Are you like directly
- 20:21contributing to potential points? Right, So that's where that comes from.
- 20:26The Eagles had fifty percent, Cowboys had fifty nine point one.
- 20:30Speaker 1: That is means I'm sorry, does that mean only on
- 20:33half of the Eagles runs they generated a positive EPA.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Yes? Interesting, Yeah, And honestly, when you look at those
- 20:42EPA per play, it's a little bit shocking how the
- 20:46margin for the Cowboys was. But when you look at
- 20:49the actual game film or if you were watching the game,
- 20:51it's not surprising that they had those runs. So it
- 20:54just it goes to show you that like a lot
- 20:56of the negative runs for the Cowboys were a lot worse.
- 21:00Mm hmmm, yeah, I mean that's to me, that's what
- 21:03that is, right, So like the Eagles had not great runs,
- 21:05but they were able to recover. The Cowboys' negative runs
- 21:09really hurt their drives.
- 21:11Speaker 1: M yeah. And then plus they busted open the big one,
- 21:15so I'm sure that that helped too, right, absolutely, yeah, absolutely,
- 21:19And then the run stuff percentage is how many of
- 21:21their runs generated what a negative EPA?
- 21:23Speaker 2: Negative EPA yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Wow, he goals did not run the bowl? Well, I mean,
- 21:27I mean, listen, they lost their full back on the
- 21:30opening kickoff, right, they've already I wrote about this on
- 21:33Philly Voice. They're already down Johnny Wilson, who is a
- 21:35huge part of their eleven personnel. We talked about this
- 21:39you and I off the air. They like to run
- 21:41out of eleven personnel with Johnny Wilson as the third
- 21:44receiver because the teams come out and nickel and he's
- 21:47bigger than their nickel corner and it's just like having
- 21:49an extra either tight end or fullback on the field.
- 21:52And then when they're in twelve personnel, grit Kalkata doesn't
- 21:55get the job done as a blocker. So I feel
- 21:57like the losses of Van Sumer and Johnny Wilson and
- 22:00are going to hurt the team more than you would
- 22:02think those two guys would ordinarily like the roles that
- 22:06they play.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. It's a unique blend of player
- 22:10that they lost.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and if Goddard gets hurt Sam, if Goddard gets hurt,
- 22:14they are in a world of trouble in the run game.
- 22:16I'll tell you that.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't disagree with you. I mean, Grandson ken block,
- 22:21which hopefully but you hopefully don't have to rely on
- 22:23that too much.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I watched every snap. I'm glad you brother.
- 22:27I watched every snap that he played. I think it
- 22:29was about eleven and they ran on seven of them.
- 22:31And it's weird because they use them as a full
- 22:35back or an h back, Yeah, full back, h back,
- 22:38tight end, all three type of roles. As they were
- 22:40trying to like figure it out without Van sumerin and
- 22:43a lot of times he was on the field, it's
- 22:45almost like he wasn't a part of the block blocking
- 22:49scheme for that run. You know what I'm saying. I
- 22:50don't think they were trying to avoid him. I just
- 22:52think it just naturally wasn't you know, sometimes you would
- 22:54come out, go in motion and run to the left eye.
- 22:57It just was there wasn't enough of a sample size
- 22:59for me to say was he doing a good job
- 23:01locking or not?
- 23:02Speaker 2: Sure? I think that's fair. I just mean, like historically
- 23:05throughout his career, I feel like he's done a pretty
- 23:07good job. Maybe maybe it's more average than good, but
- 23:10it's better little undersized.
- 23:12Speaker 1: I mean, he's really going to catch the.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Ball, yeah, but it's better than Calcatara. I guess the
- 23:17which is not it's not a hard bar to cross
- 23:20and correct correct. And then a big interesting stat which
- 23:24I kind of like is the stacked boxes, and that's
- 23:28just eight more or more people in the box. The
- 23:32Eagles had that fifty four point five. They faced it
- 23:35fifty four five point Yeah, fifty four point five percent
- 23:38of the time. Uh, And they only presented it against
- 23:42the Cowboys forty four point seven.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Percent of the time.
- 23:44Speaker 2: H light box is six or less. And that's twenty
- 23:49six point three percent for the Eagles and twenty two
- 23:52point seven percent for the Cowboys. So I mean, you
- 23:55can glean for what you want from that. It'll come
- 23:57up more as we go through this now, but that's
- 24:00as a general stat that's what you got.
- 24:03Speaker 1: All right, cool, let us move on to what you
- 24:06call star of the stat sheet and a nice picture
- 24:09of Jialen h a smiling Jalen Hurts in this picture.
- 24:12He almost never must be an old picture. Yeah, So
- 24:17let's go through some of the events data on him.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Yeah, So Hurts was nineteen for twenty three, a completion
- 24:24percentage of eighty two point sixty one percent for one
- 24:27hundred and fifty two yards six point sixty one yards
- 24:30per attempt. His QBR was ninety four point two his
- 24:35completion percentage over expectation. And let's just talk about that
- 24:38for a second. So basically, they have an algorithm for
- 24:43what completion percentage should be based on the throw, the
- 24:47difficulty of the throw, you know, the depth of the throw.
- 24:50There's a bunch of things that go into it. And
- 24:53they said, based on what Hurts did, he should have
- 24:57completed fifteen point two percent less.
- 25:00Speaker 1: M hmm.
- 25:00Speaker 2: That is an incredible statistic that he did fifteen point
- 25:03two percent over expected like that is that is something
- 25:07that is very much worth talking about. He was a
- 25:09big difference maker and that can be seen in his
- 25:12EPA per dropback, which was plus zero point twenty five,
- 25:16and that does factor in his scrambles, and I think
- 25:18a lot of it comes from his scrambles.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think that the dots in play
- 25:24is a perfect example. I'm sure that was a very
- 25:26hot That's a very low percentage, especially on third and six.
- 25:30By the way, not a lot of quarterbacks are gonna
- 25:32throw that pass on third and six, but that I
- 25:36have to I don't know what the algorithm is or
- 25:37with the data. I'm sure it's considered a very low
- 25:40percentage pass. So to complete that probably really can pick
- 25:44up your CPOE.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Yeah, But the thing is that didn't single handedly do it, right,
- 25:49because right, that's only one throw out of the twenty
- 25:51three true. So it just means of those twenty three,
- 25:55like a couple of them he probably shouldn't an average
- 25:59quarterback probably wouldn't have completed, right.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of some other throws that I
- 26:03really stuck out that maybe I don't, you know, I
- 26:07can't think. I mean a couple to DeVonta and God,
- 26:11I mean he threw the ball three or four times
- 26:13to Saquon Barkley, Barkley made a nice little one hander grab,
- 26:16so that might have helped the CPOE a little bit
- 26:18because that really would have probably been incomplete pass. But
- 26:20I will say this nineteen of twenty three is sort
- 26:24of low the eighty two percent for what it really was,
- 26:27because I think three of those balls were throwaways, Like
- 26:30he got to the sideline and just threw the ball away,
- 26:33so the ball, yes, and one was dropped, so I
- 26:36think the ball only hit the ground on a true
- 26:39pass once that wasn't a dropp or wasn't a throwaway.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Yep, I think you're right about that.
- 26:47Speaker 1: So all right, some other notes here. By the way,
- 26:50it wasn't Hurts the leader last year among all NFL
- 26:54quarterbacks and CPOE.
- 26:56Speaker 2: I believe, so, yeah, I believe that is correct.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I think we did that in a prior show.
- 27:01Speaker 2: We did, and it's not surprising. I mean, yeah, so
- 27:08if we look at CPO, I'm just gonna pull it
- 27:10up really quick. Yeah, Hurtz led the league with plus
- 27:13six point six percent, right, and by the way, that's
- 27:16six percent, not fifteen. So that's that's part of the
- 27:20reason I think he was the star of the statute,
- 27:22at least for the offense.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Hey, you know that one guy in the group chat
- 27:25who hit a five leg parlay a week one and
- 27:28he wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of
- 27:30the season.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Sounds like kaplan, right, Yeah, Yeah, it could be him.
- 27:34Speaker 3: It could be you, and we would all want to
- 27:37be you. My bookie makes it stupid easy to get
- 27:41in on the action, whether it's college ball, NFL Super
- 27:45Contest and Survivor pools. All the spreads, player props and
- 27:49in game lines that you could want, all under one roof.
- 27:54Speaker 1: What more could you want than that?
- 27:57Speaker 3: If you're new to my bookie, you use our code
- 28:01the Birds THG B I RDS.
- 28:04Speaker 1: The Birds use the code, and.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Any bet you choose up to five hundred dollars is
- 28:10fully covered. Make your play, and if it doesn't hit,
- 28:14you get it right back when you opt in using
- 28:16your bet back bonus token.
- 28:19Speaker 1: There is no.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Better time to jump in right now, No better place
- 28:24to play football is back.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Let's make some money with my bookie. You have a
- 28:29stat here that is almost mind bottling to me. Herts
- 28:33had not recorded a single scrambling touchdown rushing touchdown since
- 28:37Week fifteen of the twenty twenty three season, so he
- 28:42went all of that. Now you're saying a scramble, so
- 28:44this takes away the steve fromush pushes the design. You
- 28:48just mean a just a running, like freelance running touchdown.
- 28:51That was his first one since twenty twenty three.
- 28:54Speaker 2: For Yeah, you had two of them this game and wow.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, like I said, if you're the Cowboys, you're
- 28:59really like, why did we let this guy get outside
- 29:01the pile?
- 29:02Speaker 2: Like?
- 29:02Speaker 1: What? What? What was going through our minds when we
- 29:06did that? But he also looks really explosive. Sam. I
- 29:08thought there have been times last year where he'd run
- 29:11but did not look explosive. But I thought he looked
- 29:13pretty pretty sharp with that juke.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought so too. And his scramble rate actually
- 29:17it was thirty nine point four percent of the dropbacks,
- 29:20which is the highest since twenty twenty three as well.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Ah, well that would make sense then, Yeah, all right,
- 29:25definitely something to keep in mind as the Chiefs come
- 29:28up and they've seen him quite a bit too, and
- 29:30they're going to see that tape and probably get reminded
- 29:32of what you cannot do when you face Jalen Hurts. Sure,
- 29:37all right, let's take a look at the offensive line
- 29:38and what jumps out to you here?
- 29:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean listen, you look at it and you
- 29:44see pressures, especially from the interior, which you don't want
- 29:48to see, and you see one thing that I I'm
- 29:52so sad this happened in the first game. But one
- 29:54of the big things I was talking about with Tyler
- 29:56Steen is he had not allowed to sack in his
- 29:58entire career. Well, guess what game one happens. Guess what?
- 30:03Speaker 1: He allowed A sack That must have been the inside
- 30:06stunt sack, right because both sacks came from edges. Yep. Yeah,
- 30:12I think he got caught looking if I recall correctly,
- 30:15his head was turned away from where the stunt side
- 30:19was and by the time he looked back it was
- 30:22too late. Yep.
- 30:23Speaker 2: And unfortunate that that happened. But listen, it was going
- 30:27to happen, right, I mean, there's no way an offensive
- 30:30I mean, hopefully that would be really cool if an
- 30:33offensive lineman never allowed the sack. But it happens like that.
- 30:35That is part of the growing process. So you look
- 30:39at it. I mean, Dickerson had the most pressures allowed,
- 30:43right with four. I mean they were hurries for most
- 30:46of the part, which you know, you kind of are
- 30:49okay with but I mean having four pressures allowed it
- 30:54not ideal. And then we have the I have the
- 30:57stats snaps for pressure. I know most people doures per snap,
- 31:01but I think that this one helps people understand, like,
- 31:05out of like, how many snaps does it take to
- 31:07allow a pressure, So a lower number is worse.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Right, So Dickerson allowed a pressure every thirteen snaps, Yes,
- 31:15in a game of sixty two snaps is well, he
- 31:18only played fifty one, which makes it actually a little
- 31:20worse because it means he allowed it, you know, a
- 31:23decent number of pressures compared to how he normally does.
- 31:26And he didn't even play the full game.
- 31:28Speaker 2: I mean he was hurt. So I think you can
- 31:29excuse it to some extent, but at the same time,
- 31:34it's not ideal.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Yeah. I was gonna say excuse it, but the reality
- 31:37is it's not going away. I mean, he went from
- 31:39a knee injury to a back injury. He's a big guy,
- 31:42He's got a lot of mileage on the body. It's
- 31:44certainly a concern for me.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Yeah, but especially for the interior offensive lineman. You typically
- 31:50want to see less pressure. I mean you typically are
- 31:52going to see less pressure, so it's particularly difficult if
- 31:55you are allowing a bunch of pressures, no.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Doubt about it. All right, let's take a look at
- 31:59your run block note here.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Yeah, go ahead, No, please go ahead, No, you do it.
- 32:04The Eagles rushed for eighteen yards on twelve carries between
- 32:08the tackles in Week one, averaging one point five yards
- 32:11per carry on the night. So these are inside runs
- 32:14in particular. And then if you look at before contact,
- 32:18the Eagles average negative zero point nine yards per carry,
- 32:22their lowest average in any game since twenty seventeen.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Wow. Wow, So this is a big, big sort of
- 32:30red flag going forward. I know people can roll the rose,
- 32:33but listen, it's true. Like the Eagles identity is inside
- 32:38zone and duo, which are inside runs. They run between
- 32:42the tackles. They are not a Shanahan style like outside
- 32:46the tackles wide zone. This what they do is run
- 32:49between the tackles, usually better than any team in the league.
- 32:53And they were as unsuccessful as they've been in quite
- 32:56a long time based on this data.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Well, just to give you contact, last year, their offense
- 33:01had one point six yards before contact on inside runs
- 33:04in particular, which was eighth best in the NFL, and
- 33:07so like, going from one point six to negative zero
- 33:09point nine not good.
- 33:11Speaker 1: No, not good at all, not good Toquon. And I
- 33:14thought there were times Saquon was just making yards on
- 33:17his own, you know, spinning and trying to get out
- 33:19of things he did.
- 33:20Speaker 2: And and the thing is he faced the stack box
- 33:22on two thirds of his attempts HM. So I mean
- 33:25like they were making it really tough. They were containing
- 33:29Saquon pretty well. And I do think some of it
- 33:31is the interior offensive line is just not there yet
- 33:35for the US.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, I agree. Then no, listen, they can
- 33:39prove and and that's why week one is a little
- 33:42bit of a con job. They could come out Sunday
- 33:43and run the ball really well against Kansas City and
- 33:46then you know, we say it's just one game. It happens.
- 33:49But I then the stats were so staggering, Sam, when
- 33:52I looked at it, because this is like an identity,
- 33:54this is a who you are stat and that's the
- 33:57numbers were a lot worse than what they normally are.
- 34:00Speaker 2: And guess what if teams keep playing it that way
- 34:02and that they might have to adjust and this could
- 34:05be a who you were stat right, And they're gonna
- 34:07have to figure out other ways to win. And I'm
- 34:10pretty confident that they can do that. But it's gonna
- 34:13be a process, right, I mean, that is their identity.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Right. So now the next thing we'll talk about is
- 34:20one where I say I'm not as concerned about where
- 34:22I do think it can be an outlier because we
- 34:24see this kind of happen throughout the course of the
- 34:26season where AJ Brown goes without a target. What does
- 34:30this say on his first twenty two routes. Yes, oh
- 34:34my god, his only look go ahead, you can go
- 34:37with the.
- 34:38Speaker 2: His only look game with one twenty seven left in
- 34:41the fourth quarter, and he ultimately finished with one reception
- 34:44for eight yards on that out route.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Right right, That's crazy and that that to me, We've
- 34:50seen that with DeVante at times, seen with AJ and
- 34:52then the next game one of the you know, if
- 34:55they had a bad game, they could come out and
- 34:56get targeted ten, eleven, twelve times and have a monster game.
- 34:59So I'm not really that concerned about it. I know
- 35:01Ajs probably is, but I think it'll be all right.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I Mean the Cowboys pretty much used Man almost
- 35:08entirely last year, not entirely, but at a higher rate
- 35:12than zone last year, and they did zone and all
- 35:15of Hurtz' dropbacks, and if you look at Brown, he's
- 35:19historically been far more effective against man rather than zone.
- 35:23And it's not I guess far more. It may not
- 35:26be the right word, because he still produced pretty well.
- 35:29And I had to if I just did last year,
- 35:31it was I think he actually his yards per reception
- 35:34was better if I did last year and twenty three,
- 35:36I think his yards per reception were better in zone two.
- 35:39So I had to do his entire career. And I'm
- 35:41not saying that because they chose to do that to
- 35:43prove the stat I just think it gives the full
- 35:45picture of how he's done. His touchdowns have always been
- 35:48higher in man. I think that's a product of just
- 35:51like that's when they are gonna give him opportunities.
- 35:54Speaker 1: That's when Hurts throws him the deep go route and
- 35:57he flourishes on it.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Also very true also so but you look at it,
- 36:02you know, fifteen point four yards per reception and man
- 36:05and fourteen point eighty six yards per reception in zone.
- 36:08It's not a negligible difference, but it's not like a
- 36:12crazy difference either.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Right, this will be really interesting data to go back
- 36:16to when the Eagles and Cowboys play again, And it's
- 36:19just it's gonna be in a few weeks, like six
- 36:21or seven weeks, to see if Ibra fluse the defensivecordate
- 36:25for the Cowboys thinks. Man, my I might have taken
- 36:30a weird route playing all zone, but it kind of worked,
- 36:35and if we had just contained Hurts in the pocket
- 36:36a little better like we did in the second half,
- 36:39It'll be interesting to see if he feels like he
- 36:41has to switch it up because it's the second time
- 36:42and can't show the same thing team the same thing twice,
- 36:46or if he just says, I'm gonna stick with this
- 36:47and just try to have better, better rush discipline from
- 36:50my edges. Sure, all right, we let's go on to
- 36:53defense and here and talk about Zach Baughn.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Yeah, the other so I actually was torn to star
- 36:58the stat sheet. The other person I would have put
- 37:01here was Cooper Degene. Oh really, okay, just based on
- 37:06the stats. I mean, he was leading in a lot
- 37:07of stats, and honestly, you didn't hear his name much
- 37:11during the live broadcast, and there's a reason you didn't
- 37:14hear his name much, so just a little shout out
- 37:17to Cooper Degene here. But I think ultimately Bond was
- 37:21the difference maker in the game, and so basically that's
- 37:26why I made that determination. He had nine tackles, he
- 37:30led the team, four defensive stops second on the team,
- 37:34one pressure on three pass rushers thirty three point three
- 37:38percent obviously which led the team, and minus one point
- 37:42four coverage EPA, which is third on the team.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Right now, explain a coverage EPA.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's just basically, when you go into coverage
- 37:51and you're targeted, are you allowed? So EPA is always
- 37:56in the context of offense, right, so it's all a pause.
- 38:00They've always reflects that offense is putting themselves in better
- 38:03position to score. A negative means an offense is not
- 38:06putting themselves in a better position, which means that the
- 38:09defense is doing their job.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Right, So if you're a defender like Zach Bown, you
- 38:12want to have a negative coverage EPA because that's really
- 38:16a reflection of the offense being negative.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Exactly nice.
- 38:20Speaker 1: I thought Zach did amazing, Both him and John Campbell.
- 38:24They were very active, very athletic, had some pass breakups
- 38:28goodn't covered. There was a great corner route to your
- 38:31point here on cover GPA that Bond successfully defended I
- 38:35think in the second half where he just knew where
- 38:38to be with taking his drop and then angling towards
- 38:43the sideline to make sure a pass was not complete.
- 38:45So it was yes, yeah, he almost That was a
- 38:49great catch by freaking seedy lamb right because Zach bowm
- 38:53was right there and see the kind of I feel
- 38:55like he stole it from Zach.
- 38:57Speaker 2: But listen that they're not every goes into you know,
- 39:01the stars.
- 39:02Speaker 1: The statueets so right, and apparently Zach Bond can run
- 39:04pretty fast.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Yeah, so this was a next gen stat that I
- 39:08picked up. A lot of these are, but Zach Bond
- 39:11reached a top speed of twenty point sixty eight miles power,
- 39:14which was the fastest of his career to make that
- 39:17touchdown saving play on Miles Sanders, who hit nineteen point
- 39:21two nine miles power.
- 39:23Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I listen, we're Penn State. At Miles Sanders
- 39:27was great at Penn State. I cannot believe that we're
- 39:29at the stage of his career where a linebacker outran him.
- 39:32But that's amazing to me. Yeah, time for Dallas to
- 39:36get Jaydaen Blue on the field. If that's if A
- 39:38if you're gonna get outrun by a linebacker and b
- 39:41if you're gonna fumble, Uh, that's a good way to
- 39:43get yourself put on the bench.
- 39:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and I mean the fantasy community would be very happy.
- 39:47I know they were very high on mister Blue.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. So that was the fastest speed from scrimmage
- 39:53of Bond's career. So that's just a little urgency in
- 39:55the moment. Zach knew how important it was to keep
- 39:58that guy from getting in the end zone with the
- 39:59score being what it.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Was, which is why he was the star of the
- 40:02stat sheet.
- 40:03Speaker 1: There you go, all right, let's go to people who
- 40:06are not stars of the statu sheet. Dori Jackson.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I felt like I needed to put this here.
- 40:11Of course, I always hate talking negatively about players and
- 40:18their ability, but also in you know, the pursuit of
- 40:23candor and truth and just to be objective, we have
- 40:27to highlight when players don't. It's more fun when we
- 40:30can highlight the great things that players do do. I
- 40:33think it's all adri Jackson's fault for how he did no,
- 40:38I think that he was not always in the best position.
- 40:41I also think that there were a couple occasions where
- 40:45there was just like a really good play that was
- 40:47made against him.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Yes, that is true. That is true. The two that
- 40:52really stand out the third down like the deep over
- 40:55and the one that went for thirty four into the
- 40:58down to like the five or whatever it was set up.
- 41:01Those were just situations where our Dory was flat beat
- 41:05and could not get his hips around.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's unfortunate. I mean, he allowed five catches
- 41:09on seven targets for one hundred and three yards as
- 41:13the nearest defender, the most he's allowed since twenty twenty three.
- 41:17He had a plus eight point six coverage GPA.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Wow, so you see the offense and the positive there
- 41:23by quite a bit.
- 41:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's really not good. I mean, Ceedee Lamb
- 41:28went five for eight against Jackson fifty two point five
- 41:33percent target rate, resulting in three catches for seventy two yards. Basically,
- 41:41those three of the five catches that Adorri Jackson allowed
- 41:45were from Cede Lamb. He actually, this is this is
- 41:48the stat Like I said, I'm trying to look for
- 41:51objective objectivity here and he actually allowed less separation than
- 41:58Quinjon Mitchell two point three and two point six respectively.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Right, so yep, try it again.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know why it didn't give me the
- 42:09there you go, there you.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Go two point three and two plus, so it's relatively close.
- 42:14But the thing is Mitchell wasn't. So is this measured
- 42:17every time you're thrown at or just on every route
- 42:20you defend?
- 42:21Speaker 2: I believe it is every it's I believe it's only
- 42:25when it's thrown Yeah, because it's I should check on
- 42:29that really quick. But would you take the reins for
- 42:33a second.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just that surprises me because you know, Queena
- 42:38Mitchell was generally put on George Pickens in shadow coverage
- 42:43for the first time. I don't recall too many times
- 42:48where Pickens had more than a step up on Mitchell.
- 42:51I think there was one time I can remember Mitchell
- 42:53giving up a pass, So it surprises me. And then
- 42:57again targeted when targeted. Okay, all right, so then he
- 43:01wasn't targeted very much compared to a DORI. So I
- 43:04don't know. I guess one one pass can kind of
- 43:06skew that.
- 43:07Speaker 2: It definitely do, and these numbers will become clear. Unfortunately
- 43:11for Dori Jackson, I'm not sure he's going to see
- 43:13the field so much. I mean, I'm sure he still
- 43:15will get snaps, right, But we'll see what happens, all.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Right, the D line, you know, the edge rushing unit.
- 43:23As we take a look at here, Uh, I did
- 43:25just to naked out. I thought I had a nice game,
- 43:27and obviously the win rate shows that, and I just
- 43:30thought for everybody else it was sort of pedestrian, including
- 43:32j lox On.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that win rate is ridiculous. Yeah, I
- 43:36mean it's probably not sustained. I mean, it's definitely not sustainable.
- 43:40Speaker 1: But that's the thing with Tyler Geyton. I believe he
- 43:42was lined up a lot against Geyiton's got a long
- 43:43way to go as far as pass protection.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Sure, but yeah, I mean, look, it's that we did
- 43:49this mare this the offensive line and defensive line kind
- 43:52of mirror each other a little bit. So you know
- 43:56how we were talking about snaps pressure, Well that's pass rushes,
- 43:59pressure press snaps for pressure, right, And how we said
- 44:03that a low number was really good for an offensive lineman,
- 44:06Well it's it's actually the opposite. Now, a like a
- 44:09high number is better because Yeah, I'm sorry, it's it's
- 44:14the opposite. It's basically a low number is also better
- 44:17because you're you're saying it takes this many snaps to
- 44:20get a pressure. Yeah, sorry about that.
- 44:21Speaker 1: No, No, I knew I was gonna walk you there, but.
- 44:24Speaker 2: I had it inverted in my head.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Chas you know, forty three point almost winning at a
- 44:29forty four percent clip is what he did, a pressure
- 44:32every four and a half pass rushers, right, So that's
- 44:35that's good, you want that. Absolutely not as great for
- 44:39some of the others who took a little longer to
- 44:41get there there, especially against the Dallas offensive line. That's
- 44:43good on the interior, but not so great on the exterior.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Yeah, so you'd hope the edge would do a little
- 44:49bit better. I mean, we have the get off speeds.
- 44:51A little disappointed in Nolan, you know, Yeah, but that's look,
- 44:57we'll see what happens.
- 44:58Speaker 1: All right. It's just a so yeah, you will say,
- 45:01but I mean it was pretty clear watching it that
- 45:02they weren't getting a ton of pressure from the edge.
- 45:05Let's go the interior line, which is skewed a little
- 45:07bit in that Jille and Carter didn't play, so that
- 45:10for Spyron Young have to play the most snaps of
- 45:13his career, I think, yeah, yeah, clearly the most snaps
- 45:17of his career. And also Jordan Davis. Jordan Davis played
- 45:20really I thought played really well. We talked about it
- 45:22inside the tape, and obviously his win rate shows that
- 45:25pretty good too. Yeah.
- 45:27Speaker 2: I mean, listen, you look at this and Gabe Hall
- 45:31had the fastest get off in his two past rush attempts.
- 45:35But still, you know, a little hustle from Hall. I
- 45:38was a little bit surprised that Hall played less than Young.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Well, Young is built more like a more like the nose, sure,
- 45:48and they needed that. Yeah, they needed the nose, even
- 45:51though that's really Jordan Davis. I shouldn't say John Carter
- 45:54is not the nose, but they needed that, that kind
- 45:56of same frame that they wanted for their five man front.
- 45:59So I think they wanted just the the longer framed
- 46:03Byron Young to play that spot.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Well, I guess by what I was saying, by need
- 46:07of that is if you look at those pass rushes, Yeah,
- 46:11Jordan Davis at thirty four and Ojomo at thirty six,
- 46:14so he kind of makes up for that other where
- 46:16Davis was out yeah, if that makes sense.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, So I mean Jordan Davis was basically asked
- 46:21to be the three technique in a four man front
- 46:23and a pass rusher, and he responded by I'm gonna
- 46:26guess the three pressures is among the most of his career,
- 46:30if not the most of his career.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't be shocked if that's true.
- 46:33Speaker 1: Yeah, And to have the best get off for all
- 46:37four for a guy who struggled to wait and has
- 46:40played high doesn't always have the best get off, I
- 46:43thought it was really encouraging.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Although those win percentages are kind of like, eh.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I think all around, but again, they didn't generate.
- 46:51They didn't get a whole lot of pressure. You had
- 46:53that earlier. Dak got rid of the ball quickly, which
- 46:55the gates being able to get pressure. And the interior
- 46:59of Dallas offensive line has two guys who are well
- 47:02one's an All Pro and Tyler Smith and the other
- 47:04is a rookie who was drafted in the first round
- 47:07and pretty good in Booker. So sure that's gonna be
- 47:09the strength of the Dallas offensive line all year. Yep.
- 47:15Speaker 2: Well, with that being said, another next gen stat here
- 47:17is without Jalen Carter Moro Jomo and Jordan Davis played
- 47:21fifty defensive snaps each eighty nine percent playtime. This was
- 47:25the first time in Next Gen Stats era since twenty
- 47:28sixteen that the Eagles had two interior defensive linemen played
- 47:31over eighty five percent of their snaps. They like to rotate,
- 47:34they were not able to rotate this time.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what, I don't think Vic likes
- 47:38rotating as much as other like Jim Schwartz loves to rotate.
- 47:42Just look at the edges, right, he's really playing just three.
- 47:46He did it last year too. He really only has
- 47:48a three man edge rotation. And this time, excuse me,
- 47:51this time it was Jaelex Hunt, Nolan Smith, and josh
- 47:54Uce asisos Lauri was inactive. I know you that, and
- 47:59Patrick Johnson some snaps only because you know he was
- 48:02active for special teams so you have n't there to
- 48:03use him. But almost all of the snaps went to
- 48:06the starters.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's also a really good point. But just
- 48:10for context, Jordan Davis's previous career high was sixty eight
- 48:14percent in Week six, twenty twenty three. Do you remember
- 48:17what game that was?
- 48:18Speaker 1: Was that the Buffalo Bills game.
- 48:20Speaker 2: It was the game I believe, right before the Buffalo
- 48:22Bills game. Oh okay, Miami.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Miami, Wow, interesting, interesting, all right, cool, cool, good stuff there.
- 48:31That was your next s and real quick look at
- 48:33the rookies before we get out of here.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Yeah, So both mccuba and Campbell, you know, forty six
- 48:40and fifty one snaps respectively, played on eighty percent plus
- 48:44I guess his eighty two plus defensive snaps. So Campbell
- 48:49had ninety one point one, mccuba had eighty two point one.
- 48:53And then if I just did a quick comparison with them,
- 48:56mccuba was targeted once for five yards and thirty one snaps,
- 48:59and that his you know that that was a ferguson
- 49:04second and six. Yeah, that he allowed mm hmm plus
- 49:09zero point three cover gpa, So not necessarily great, but
- 49:14almost zero zero point three yards average separation is insane.
- 49:20He had a very tight window on that. And then
- 49:23that catch rate over expectation was plus seventy five point
- 49:26one percent because it was such a tough catch, right right,
- 49:30Campbell targeted twice zero allowed negative one point one cover
- 49:34gpa just because he didn't allow a reception.
- 49:37Speaker 1: He did a great job a couple of times defending
- 49:39the whole on you know, on that ship. Dak loves
- 49:43to throw that seam shot to the tight end a
- 49:45cover two. Did a great job, yes, yes, and he
- 49:48did a great job defending him.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Yeah. Then one point five yards average separation also really good,
- 49:55negative fifty six point one percent completion. So what there's
- 49:59What that means is that of his two passes, they
- 50:02were expected, you know, one at least one was supposed
- 50:05to be caught. So and then he had that key
- 50:08fumble on Sanders in the third quarter.
- 50:10Speaker 1: All right, all right, great stuff, awesome, that is a
- 50:16great first look. On the next episode, Sam, maybe we'll
- 50:19get into some of the new editions. It's it's been
- 50:21a show here and we've got to wrap it up.
- 50:23But as as always, next next week we'll get into
- 50:27the data from the Eagles the Chiefs game, and then
- 50:29we'll go over a little bit some of the new
- 50:30editions and see how, you know, if they play, what
- 50:33they do and if not, we'll go into some of
- 50:34their history.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Sound good, sounds good?
- 50:37Speaker 1: All right, my friend, Thank you so much for the
- 50:40in depth look, advanced analytic look at the Eagles game
- 50:44against the Dallas Cowboys one to oh, and we'll see
- 50:47what they are next week after the Kansas City Chiefs game.
- 50:50That's gonna do it. For this episode of Inside the
- 50:53Data for Sam Finkel, I'm Jeff Mosher. Catch you on
- 50:56the next one.
- 51:00Speaker 2: O
