Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / More Conference Expansion? A look at Week 1 of College Football, Eliot Clough talks Hawkeyes, NFL Cut Day
Transcript
- 0:21All right, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon On a
- 0:25Wednesday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:29back for the next 6 hours of Iowa based programming.
- 0:32Trent Condon, myself, Ken Miller will kick things off and take
- 0:35you until 2O clock off the bench with Sean and Lucas coming up
- 0:39two until 5 overtime Iowa. After that for the next couple
- 0:43of hours, here's who's going to join Trent and myself as I
- 0:47refresh my memory when it comes to the guest list.
- 0:50We are. We're going to start with
- 0:52Elliott Clef, who was obviously at the Hawkeye press conferences
- 0:56yesterday listening to Kirk Ference name his starting left
- 0:59tackle. We will get to pick his brain on
- 1:02the the players and what the head coach had to say in
- 1:04anticipation of a massive game against Albany coming up here on
- 1:08Saturday. It's a 5:00 kick on the Big 10
- 1:12Network have at BTNFS. 1. FS1 picked it up.
- 1:17But anyways, we will talk to Elliott Clef on the Hawks and
- 1:20what he he expects to see play, how he expects to see the season
- 1:24play out. Mitch Holt is going to join us
- 1:26today and tomorrow. That'll be the final of the
- 1:30daily reports with Mitch and then we'll get him weekly
- 1:33throughout the regular season with the exception of the bye
- 1:35weeks. But we'll talk to Mitch Holtis.
- 1:37Papa John's central Iowa and the state of Iowa make that
- 1:40possible. David Kaplan is here.
- 1:42It's Wednesday after all, so Cappy will join us.
- 1:45The Bears as every team has, has made their cuts.
- 1:48The roster now sets at 53. They will be making some
- 1:52addition to practice squads here, etcetera, and hoping some
- 1:55of the guys they try to sneak through survive, as every team
- 1:58will do, so they can add them to those practice squads.
- 2:00But Cappy on the Bears and on the Cubs, who fell again last
- 2:03night out on the West Coast to San Francisco.
- 2:06And then Stephen M Sipple from on three media
- 2:09huskerillustrated.com the Huskers and Cincinnati Little
- 2:13Big 10 Big 12 crossover tomorrow night. 8:00 Arrowhead Stadium is
- 2:19the scene for that one. That game will can be seen on
- 2:23ESPN, but sip will be here to help us with that one and the
- 2:27latest on Nebraska and how the season is going to play out.
- 2:29For those of you over in the western part of the state or you
- 2:32Husker France fans sprinkled throughout the state of Iowa.
- 2:36How are you Mr. by the way? Yeah, you added tennis to your
- 2:40portfolio yesterday. Unfortunately it was one of my
- 2:43only wins of yesterday, so you. You made me follow tennis for
- 2:47crying out loud. But so I don't know that guy his
- 2:51name, but you're obviously very well versed in tennis.
- 2:54So I'm guessing we can expect more tennis plays as the US Open
- 2:58continues on here. Lots of lots of different places
- 3:02where you can start. I guess I want to start with,
- 3:04did you see Brett Mcmurphy's piece today?
- 3:06I did. What can we not?
- 3:09Can we just get through a College Football Playoff or a
- 3:11college football season? Can we have this in June?
- 3:13Or may yes, you know, even July anything anytime.
- 3:17But why do we have to expansions back on the table, according to
- 3:20the athletic director at the University of Maryland, who
- 3:23needs to shut up? Absolutely.
- 3:24Pipe sound. You're a bit part.
- 3:27Sit in the corner, speak when spoken to.
- 3:30You're Maryland's AD, yes. You're not Michigan.
- 3:32No, you're not Penn State. You're not Ohio State.
- 3:34You're not. Movers, we'll come to you when
- 3:36it's your turn and maybe we won't come to you at all.
- 3:39But and I'm guessing, you know, he didn't get clearance to be
- 3:42the one that develops, developed this information, put it out
- 3:47there for the public to consume. And we're apparently going to a
- 3:5120 team big 10 in 2030, which is just the first domino.
- 3:55If that's the case, you know that the next domino is going to
- 3:57fall. I don't know what it means.
- 3:58I just I'm sick of it. I'm so glad I'm going to be
- 4:01retired for all of this when it when it all plays itself out.
- 4:04I truly am. I love it now.
- 4:05It was better before. I get it.
- 4:08It's money and it's, it's, it's the be all end all.
- 4:11But anyways, it disappoints me. Yeah, 'cause I don't know where
- 4:14our friends in, in Story County will end up.
- 4:16And that's maybe as big of a a concern for me as anything,
- 4:20'cause I don't want to see them relegated to a, a lesser
- 4:24conference. I don't I, I truly don't.
- 4:26They've been great for everybody's career that does
- 4:29what we do. So anyways, I I was just
- 4:32disappointed. What were your thoughts I guess?
- 4:35It's what I felt. You've been saying it for years,
- 4:38yeah. I mean, I've been having this
- 4:40tune now for the better part of 15 years that this is
- 4:43inevitable, that this is where everything has been trending.
- 4:47And we've seen over the last three years how it's getting
- 4:49more and more likely that this is going to be the reality of
- 4:52college football, that it's going to be two super leagues.
- 4:56And then what happens with that leftover thirdly and how that
- 4:59sits if it's 20, if it's 24, whatever the final number is for
- 5:03the Big 10 and the FCC, it is the reality.
- 5:06That is where we are trending and and love it or hate it.
- 5:09And it depends maybe on what side you're rooting for, loving
- 5:13and hating it. It is the reality.
- 5:15This is where we're going. I don't know if it's going to be
- 5:17in 2032. I don't know if it's going to be
- 5:18in 20-40. But I think this is the end game
- 5:21that everybody has to anticipate.
- 5:23And what you hope is if that does happen, that there is still
- 5:27a place that it doesn't become only 40 or 48 teams, that there
- 5:33is still a seat at the table like the Group of Five has right
- 5:36now, that there's still an opportunity for the leftovers.
- 5:39And so would this be a football? Only move, I think.
- 5:42So I think that's what it is. Basketball is too good.
- 5:46And I just saw, I think ESPN, I think it yeah, it was their
- 5:49bracketology yesterday. They had an updated 114 teams
- 5:53from the SEC, 11 from the Big 10, eight from the Big 12.
- 5:58Piggies had a handful, handful for the ACC and that was.
- 6:01It so the big 10s needles pointing up again.
- 6:04This is, again, Bracketology in Hawkins, so take it with a grain
- 6:08of salt. It was just more than anything.
- 6:09And a lot of those teams, Iowa was one of the last teams in.
- 6:12I think Indiana was one of the last teams in.
- 6:14That's kind of the component that you had.
- 6:15But that aside, this consolidation of power,
- 6:20football's it's own separate entity and the NCAA does not put
- 6:24on a football championship. This is the athletic directors
- 6:26to put on the football championship.
- 6:28So yes, that's what I believe is going to look like.
- 6:31Will there be an opportunity though?
- 6:33Because when you water it down to that level and you have a
- 6:37league of leftovers, if you will, what does that league?
- 6:40Is it just one spot? Is it like what the group of
- 6:42five is? And then what happens to the
- 6:44group of five that we know it really is Iowa State in with the
- 6:49Boise's and the Memphis's of the world or the leftover ACC's, the
- 6:53leftover big twelves, maybe a couple of those Memphis's and
- 6:56Boise's and there is 1/3 viable. Conference.
- 6:59Do any Big 10 SCC teams get left behind when this happens?
- 7:02I don't think so because he still need else you still you
- 7:06do. It's just the way you put it.
- 7:08I'm not laughing at your your take.
- 7:09You need Vanderbilt, you need Purdue.
- 7:11You need those programs, Mississippi State in your league
- 7:14because he can't play the gauntlet every single time.
- 7:16So I don't believe that we're going to see what some people
- 7:19think is out there, that we're going to see the consolidation
- 7:21and Yep, you're out. I don't believe that's going to
- 7:25happen because you're still scheduling and still having at
- 7:27least a couple of wins in there all the way that it looks like.
- 7:30But that's when we look towards that future 5/10/20 years down
- 7:35the line, if there's still a seat, if there's still an
- 7:37opportunity and it becomes FC at BS level.
- 7:41Excuse me, I'm like 75 teams. I have a state's fine, sure, but
- 7:46if it is 48 only. Well, it's just the state of
- 7:48five. It has nothing to do with the
- 7:50program. The program is obviously it can
- 7:52play football. It's the state that we reside
- 7:54in. It's just not big enough to have
- 7:56two I don't think, unfortunately.
- 8:01But you in a bad mood. I did.
- 8:02That just pissed me off When I read it this morning.
- 8:04I almost didn't want to click on it.
- 8:05Then I knew it was too important to just bypass it, put my head
- 8:08in the sand and forget about it anyways, because college
- 8:11football starts tomorrow. It's a hell of a slate tomorrow.
- 8:13Night. It really and truly is.
- 8:15I love the fact that, you know, we're getting teams that matter.
- 8:18You know, Iowa and Iowa State don't play, but teams that are
- 8:20about to play in the upcoming three months do.
- 8:24So you what? For that reason, you get a look
- 8:25at Minnesota and you get a look at how do you say his name?
- 8:28Perch Perich, the safety that's going to play both ways.
- 8:32And there's a lot of steam coming in on him.
- 8:33Remember, this time last year, Travis Hunter was what, 80 to
- 8:36one? Yes, to win the Heisman.
- 8:37Not saying the parish is going to.
- 8:39You can get coy at 100 to one right now at Circa.
- 8:41Is he really is, for those of you so inclined.
- 8:44So you'll get to see Minnesota, you'll get to see Wisconsin.
- 8:47Are as they as bad as I think or are they okay like Trent thinks?
- 8:51Rutgers early on. They play at 5:00.
- 8:53Rutgers plays at 5:00. And they play the last game.
- 8:55Week of September, that's week one of the Big 10, right?
- 8:57Yep. So that would be the 27th.
- 8:59Well. It's a Friday night game O26
- 9:01there, so we'll get. Rutgers and I will play on
- 9:03Friday night. Yeah, I'm.
- 9:07Supposed to work at Prairie. On the 19th Oh the. 19th I'm
- 9:12good, I'm out, you're good anyways.
- 9:15And then Nebraska and Cincinnati and Sip's going to be here to
- 9:18help us out with that one. Just the Bearcats we will get,
- 9:21we'll talk to Sip about this. Are you buying the Bearcats kind
- 9:24of elevating their stand, their place in the Big 12 this year?
- 9:28I think is this a team to will we be at any point this year
- 9:33when we're talking about the parody in the Big 12 and who may
- 9:36or may not, Well, either one of us say, well, don't forget about
- 9:40Cincinnati. I like them.
- 9:43I don't love them. I there's two teams, I think in
- 9:47the Big 12 when you're looking outside of the ones.
- 9:50Outside the ones. OK, who are they?
- 9:51It's Houston and Cincinnati. Houston, yes.
- 9:54Those are the two teams that I'm most intrigued by this season
- 9:58so. You're not alone, by the way, on
- 9:59Houston. When you look at Cincinnati
- 10:02Soresby, he's played a lot of. Football.
- 10:03He's played a lot of football. So you kind of start with that
- 10:06component. This is a guy that's been out
- 10:07there a ton. He's taken a lot of snaps.
- 10:09The question for them is offensive line and they can run
- 10:11it and it gets a new front in Nebraska.
- 10:14I think they're going to be OK. The Soresby last year, 65%,
- 10:17eighteen touchdowns, 7 picks. Year before that, 15 touchdowns,
- 10:205 interceptions and he runs. He had 9 rushing touchdowns last
- 10:23year, almost 500 yards on the ground.
- 10:25Remember, sacks are also a part of it in college football.
- 10:27I like Soresby. I think at minimum he is solid.
- 10:30So those are the teams. They're deep, dark horses, both
- 10:34Houston and Cincinnati, but they're on my they're ahead of
- 10:37the Colorados. They're ahead of even teams like
- 10:39BYU for me. So you don't like Colorado?
- 10:41I do not I got to see it. And you don't like BYU?
- 10:45I don't, you know, prior to Ratzlaf having sex, this was the
- 10:50team that was on a lot of people's.
- 10:52This team can absolutely win the conference.
- 10:54Oh yeah, and absolutely win. I was never there.
- 10:57I wasn't there, but it was the team that was in that
- 11:00conversation type of thing. I don't know.
- 11:05I mean, I guess, I guess we'll see, obviously, but there's
- 11:09still a lot of BYU love out there.
- 11:11We had a guy called me during the break yesterday, said he's
- 11:14all over the BYU win over win total Dylan Ryola.
- 11:19When we go back to this game now, he's got whole go for a
- 11:23whole year. Yep.
- 11:23I think it makes a difference. Went through spring, went
- 11:26through summer. We saw him last year down the
- 11:29back half of the year. He was OK.
- 11:32Yep. He was not the guy that we saw,
- 11:34though, early in the season, certainly against you and I
- 11:37against Illinois, even in that loss, and he missed a couple of
- 11:40plays in that game. That was that, the overtime
- 11:42game, Yes. Yeah, he missed, absolutely.
- 11:44And taking the sack when he can't take a sack.
- 11:46That was bad at the end, but statistically he was good in
- 11:49that game. Does that hold up?
- 11:51Does that continue? Are we going to see another
- 11:54level of ascension for him and an offensive line that's got
- 11:57some new faces? Yeah.
- 11:58They got new receivers. New receivers and they spent,
- 12:01yeah, they did. They went out in the portal and
- 12:03they spent big time to help out and give him weapons.
- 12:06Another thing that jumped off to me when I was going through the
- 12:08Nebraska depth chart the other night was this is overall a
- 12:11pretty young team. Are they?
- 12:14I wonder. I think there's still a bowl
- 12:16team. I think they're seven and five
- 12:18type of team. So they've come down a little
- 12:20bit before you had them. Could no that's I I8.
- 12:23And four, seven and five, that's where I've been really the whole
- 12:26time. But when people are talking
- 12:29about this jump and rule in year #3 and it's the conversation.
- 12:33It is part of his history. I can understand why they're
- 12:35talking. But he also did it in Temple,
- 12:37and he did it at Baylor. Baylor when Baylor was down.
- 12:40In this Big 10, if the expectation is we're going to be
- 12:45in content, we're going to go to November with a shot.
- 12:48If that's too much for a team that is this young, that would
- 12:52be my question that I still have for Nebraska.
- 12:54Because the guys, they're going to look the part.
- 12:56But guess what? They always look the part.
- 12:58They they always look good. It's what happens.
- 13:02No 60 minutes and well, usually in the last couple of minutes
- 13:05they find ways to lose. Yeah, really.
- 13:07Boy, they have shot themselves in the foot, haven't they?
- 13:09Their schedule, There's their Big 10 schedule, home to
- 13:12Michigan. Tough game.
- 13:15By the way, Boyd Underwood does not lack for confidence.
- 13:17Did you see some of his quotes? There's the college football has
- 13:21never seen a freshman like me. Good, that's what he said.
- 13:25Their schedule is pretty easy too, by the way.
- 13:26Michigan's is. I got to look at that in a
- 13:28second. Michigan, Michigan State at home
- 13:30at Maryland, at Mini Northwestern, home, USC at home
- 13:34to UCLA to Penn State and then Iowa.
- 13:39I want to find Michigan's schedule.
- 13:40Obviously, we know where the final game of the conference is,
- 13:44but prior to that, their Big 10 slate at Nebraska, as we
- 13:47mentioned, home to Wisconsin, at USC, home to Washington,
- 13:51Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern, Maryland.
- 13:54How about that four-game? Well, you know, to remove
- 13:57Michigan State, I think they're going to be better.
- 13:59If they find a way to win at least one of those two Rd. games
- 14:02early on at Nebraska or at USC. Yeah, look out.
- 14:05I agree. They're going to the playoff in
- 14:07all likelihood. There's no Penn State, no,
- 14:10there's no Oregon and Ohio States and Ann Arbor this year.
- 14:16Wow, I didn't realize it was that soft.
- 14:19That three-game stretch to begin November home to Purdue at
- 14:22Northwestern at Maryland. If that's not 3 and O.
- 14:25You can't sign up for anything better.
- 14:26You can't. And there's even a bye week in
- 14:28there between the. Purdue and I just realized that,
- 14:33yeah, the second week of November, there's bye, bye,
- 14:36we'll see. God, it's so much fun to talk
- 14:38about schedules and games and look ahead.
- 14:40And away we go as the show moves to autopilot for the next four
- 14:44months. So of the big spotlight games
- 14:47this weekend, Texas, Ohio State, LSU, Clemson and Notre Dame,
- 14:52Miami, Those three can. I put North Carolina TCU in
- 14:56there stand alone game Of the three you're going to, I can
- 14:59only watch one or which one I'd be which one?
- 15:01Which one kind of gets your juices flowing the most?
- 15:04Oh man. I mean the easy answer and one
- 15:10of the polls is number one versus number.
- 15:11Two it is, yes. With Ohio State, Texas, but, but
- 15:15they don't play. Any of our of our our quote, our
- 15:17teams. Yeah, I'm different that one.
- 15:20Like I just care. I'm not.
- 15:21No, I'm with you. I'm with you now.
- 15:23Selfishly, it'll probably be LSU, Clemson, because I'm so
- 15:26heavily invested in Clemson. The Notre Dame game is
- 15:29interesting for one reason. They don't have a lot of tough
- 15:32games. Their schedule's a joke.
- 15:33It it it they don't have a lot of tough games.
- 15:36I know you picked them to get to the national championship.
- 15:40They've got Miami Week 1, Texas A&M Week 2.
- 15:43And they have a buy before the A&M game.
- 15:45Oh come on, they get a buy after this game.
- 15:47Yeah, because it's on Sunday so instead of having just 6K it.
- 15:51Was State K State flew back from Dublin for crying out loud.
- 15:55It's Notre Dame. It's a joke.
- 15:58Join a league. Join a league.
- 15:59They're never going to join a league.
- 16:00We know that. But they got to go to Arkansas.
- 16:03Oh wow, there you go. I mean when you got to.
- 16:04Take it easy on the fighting. To the 12th best team in the
- 16:07SEC. Well, the coach is just waiting
- 16:10to get fired or get a buyout. Yeah, I hope that's not the
- 16:12case, but I think you're probably right.
- 16:14Oh, Boise comes in, they don't have Genti.
- 16:18They don't look at their October.
- 16:19I mean, Speaking of jokes, they don't go on the road in October.
- 16:22Hang on, let me get, let me get their schedule.
- 16:24They don't go on the road in October.
- 16:27Home for Boise, home for NC State, home for USC.
- 16:31Bye. Then they go to Boston College.
- 16:34Look out. Come on.
- 16:37It's a joke. What's what's their November
- 16:39schedule like? When when is the when's the USC
- 16:41game? Middle of October?
- 16:44Yep. At home.
- 16:45At home at Boston College, Navy at Pitt.
- 16:48Syracuse. Stan.
- 16:49Good God, Stanford lost to Hawaii.
- 16:52That's how you're finishing up your year.
- 16:54Playoff team, Oh my God, I hope they go 10 or two and they're
- 16:56left out. I bet they won't.
- 16:57Be, but they won't be. You're right.
- 16:59Because they're Notre. Dame exactly.
- 17:00Anybody else UConn could play that schedule another
- 17:03independent and they go 10 and two and they're left out.
- 17:07Would they go 10 and two with that schedule?
- 17:08I don't know. You got they lose their first
- 17:11two. Yeah, Purdue week 3.
- 17:14They get a buy after this game. That's pathetic.
- 17:17Come on. When you rig the system come.
- 17:20On Boise State, going to be good.
- 17:24No. I don't think they are either,
- 17:25but you know what? I think they're a cinch in the
- 17:27Mountain West. A cinch though I.
- 17:30Think they're a cinch? Gentie was so special.
- 17:32I agree, but UNLV was the team that was going to be pick off
- 17:37Boise State this year. Boise State's run at the top of
- 17:42the Mountain West Conference was coming crashing down.
- 17:44They were at night and day to beat Idaho State.
- 17:49Well, they were. You don't want to overreact to
- 17:51Week 1 because Oregon remember struggle.
- 17:53That's all I get to re overreact to.
- 17:56Medic Madsen. I like him.
- 17:59I. He's OK.
- 18:00He's OK. He's at the right spot.
- 18:02Yes, he's a Boise State quarterback.
- 18:05He is short and he's fine. He's tough.
- 18:08He's not going to South Bend and winning the rest of the but the
- 18:12Mountain West, I mean, they've also taken a step back as.
- 18:14A yeah, they have absolutely have.
- 18:17All right, we'll take a time out.
- 18:18Elliot Clough is going to join us.
- 18:19We'll catch up on Iowa. Kirk Ference met the media
- 18:22yesterday, Various players as well.
- 18:25We'll get into that. I saw that on Tom's site,
- 18:28hawkeyereport.com. They put up their game day
- 18:32preview Pants Albany. I mean, hey, whoever drew the
- 18:38short straw and had to write that thing, good God.
- 18:41The. What's the point Sprint and what
- 18:43did you? What was the number that you
- 18:44came up with with when an overwhelming favorite FBS plays
- 18:49an FCS as a how many point favorite?
- 18:5337 1/2 or more. 37 1/2 or more fave What did What did the What
- 18:57did the numbers say? So this is from Bill AD from VC.
- 19:01He he, he's the guy behind VC, yes.
- 19:03He puts out a newsletter every morning.
- 19:05If you're a gambler, sign up for the newsletter.
- 19:06It's free and great information. And it's in your inbox every
- 19:09morning, right? Yeah.
- 19:11Huge favorites 37 1/2 or more have been almost automatic in
- 19:14FBS versus FCS matchups in the opening weeks of college
- 19:17football since 2013. Well, they're 16 and Oh yeah, of
- 19:21course. Right, but against the number,
- 19:23what are? They they're 15 and one come on
- 19:25against the spread close to a lot because you're going.
- 19:28To So the Hawks are a cinch. They're a cinch.
- 19:30Play it with confidence. What?
- 19:31What else? Football.
- 19:33What else have we got this week? That's that type of spread, do
- 19:36you know? There were a handful of other
- 19:38games he had to have those FCS matchups, and they're going to
- 19:41be ugly. They're. 15 and 1. 15 to one
- 19:44against the spread. On FBS versus FCS games where
- 19:49the point spread is 37 1/2 or greater, and that's been since
- 19:522013. Illinois favored by 45 1/2.
- 19:56Bet bet with confidence that would fall.
- 19:58Category Georgia 39 1/2 against Marshall, Penn State against
- 20:02Nevada 43 1/2 is the number in that one.
- 20:06Those are some of the games that you'd circle if you believe in
- 20:09this trend. Next coming up tomorrow, No.
- 20:14Friday, Friday. I'm a day ahead of my time.
- 20:16You do? Yeah.
- 20:17You know what? There's one game that that that
- 20:20came out I think was 3 1/2 when it opened.
- 20:22It's now 6 1/2. I I I don't want to bet Utah
- 20:25anymore. I thought they were cinch.
- 20:28I thought they. Were he's gone, he's gone.
- 20:30We don't. Have to worry.
- 20:31That's good news. Yes, absolutely.
- 20:33I think that's good news. They got the New Mexico State
- 20:35transfer who can run like the wind.
- 20:38UCLA. I'm a lever.
- 20:40I'm not a believer. Not either and the wide
- 20:43receivers are banged up for you, Clough.
- 20:45Their defense was good last year, but they lost a ton.
- 20:47But the whole. Country's betting the utes is my
- 20:49point, right? So how can I put them?
- 20:51I don't want to go the other way.
- 20:53We'll see. Anyways.
- 20:54Miller and Condon underway, Elliot Clough on the Hawks,
- 20:56that's next. Mitch Holt is still to come.
- 20:58Cappy's here to kick off our number, our number two.
- 21:02Look forward to that. And then Stephen M Simple on
- 21:04Nebraska, Cincinnati, Miller and Condon underway on a Wednesday.
- 21:08Iowa Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller Condon, welcome back
- 21:2112:30 on a Wednesday. Mitch Holt is still to come.
- 21:25Voice of the Kansas City Chiefs. Sounds like Rashi Rice.
- 21:28Six games. Yes, that suspension has been
- 21:31handed down, so we'll talk to Mitch about that as well as
- 21:33other topics. Our number 2, David Kaplan is
- 21:37here. Chicago Sports every single
- 21:39Wednesday at one with Cappy. We'll talk about the Bears,
- 21:41we'll talk about the Cubs, etcetera with the cap man.
- 21:44And then Stephen M Simple on Nebraska's.
- 21:46They'll head to Arrowhead Stadium tomorrow night to take
- 21:48on the Cincinnati Bearcats. Let's talk some Hawks.
- 21:52Elliot Cleff, hawkeyeinsider.com, part of 24/7
- 21:56Sports, listening into the press conferences yesterday.
- 21:59Elliot Trenton, Ken, as always, thank you for coming on.
- 22:01Appreciate your contribution to the radio team.
- 22:05Let's start with the Kirk Ference.
- 22:06Yesterday, he named his left tackle.
- 22:08It wasn't a surprise to many who had been following it.
- 22:11But just your thoughts on what you heard from Coach Ferris.
- 22:14Let's start there. Yeah, you mentioned him naming
- 22:18his left tackle in Trevor Loud being the starter, but he also
- 22:21said that Jack Dosler was going to get some time tomorrow or
- 22:24sorry, on Saturday. I wish it was tomorrow on
- 22:27Saturday at last Tackle for Iowa said a lot of these names are
- 22:31written in pencil, not in permanent marker or pen.
- 22:35That's probably why we saw so many ORS on that original depth
- 22:39chart. So not not super willing to
- 22:42commit to a lot of these guys as starters other than, you know,
- 22:45the folks that have been been around for a while, Jennings
- 22:47dunker, Logan Jones, both Stevens, those guys, I mean,
- 22:51running backs as well. Two ORS on on that group with
- 22:55Kamari Moulton, TJ Washington, Xavier Williams and and of
- 22:58course Jasmine Patterson. But really other than that, you
- 23:02know, it's just not super committal right now, I guess, if
- 23:08you will. And other than, you know, Mark
- 23:11Granowski being the starter too, that is very clearly on his job.
- 23:15But yeah, not not a whole lot from Kirk yesterday in terms of
- 23:19like the opponent or anything like that.
- 23:22There's just so little to know about Albany right now with the
- 23:26the turnover on the roster and the fact that they still have an
- 23:29interim head coach. So truthfully, I mean, right
- 23:33now, we're still, we're still in limbo, right?
- 23:35Like we just have to season football.
- 23:38With that, you mentioned the running back position, so
- 23:41Moulton's back out there healthy.
- 23:42See a lot of him. TJ Washington, Jazzy on
- 23:45Patterson. We kind of know the two guys not
- 23:47listed though, or maybe the ones most intriguing.
- 23:49We've heard so much about Nathan McNeil and then Brevin Doll, and
- 23:52we know that he was banged up last year.
- 23:54What do you know about those two guys?
- 23:55It sounds like McNeil. Mcneil's going to play at least
- 23:57in some fashion. And what have you heard about
- 23:59Brevin Doll? Yeah, I know.
- 24:02First of all, I'll start with with Brevin.
- 24:04I, as far as I know right now, his role on this team this
- 24:07season is largely going to be on special teams, whether that's
- 24:10Gunner, whether that's getting involved, maybe in return.
- 24:13I, I, I doubt it right now, but whether that's being Gunner on,
- 24:16on kickoff, I'd expect that to be Brevin's role this season
- 24:21unless, you know, things transpire a little bit
- 24:23differently as the year goes on. He's just really working on
- 24:26gaining that confidence back after missing a good chunk of
- 24:29the spring and entering year 2. So I don't have, we have huge
- 24:32expectations for Brevin this year, but it wouldn't surprise
- 24:34me if he does see some time on the field with Nathan McNeil.
- 24:37Yeah, we're definitely going to see him on Saturday.
- 24:40I don't know what that's going to look like.
- 24:43You mentioned all those names and we know all the names on on
- 24:45the depth chart ahead of him. It's just a really deep room.
- 24:48So, so like Kirk said, he's giving Nathan McNeil the green
- 24:52light. But as much as we see tomorrow
- 24:55or something, geez, I keep saying more this weekend.
- 24:58That's a, that's a good question.
- 24:59I, I'm not sure how they're going to balance that out.
- 25:02You know, if it is a blowout, we'll probably see a little bit
- 25:04more of, of McNeil in the second-half And, and who knows,
- 25:07maybe we get to see some of that lightning in a bottle that we
- 25:10that we've heard about. Would you, would you be shocked
- 25:13if we, you guys get a box score after the game or we go online
- 25:17and find it? McNeil leads the team in carries
- 25:19after Saturday's game. Oh, that's a good question.
- 25:23I, I do think, I do think that is definitely contingent on how
- 25:28the first half goes. And if it's, you know, 24
- 25:32nothing, 31 nothing at half and you go into the fourth quarter
- 25:36and I will possess the ball of us and you just look to hand the
- 25:38ball off to your young guy and get him some reps.
- 25:41I could see that. I I probably, I probably would
- 25:45lean to the field if I'm, you know, if I'm, if I'm forced to
- 25:49defend, like, you know, Marie Moulton could come out in, in
- 25:51the first half and they could just possess the ball, possess
- 25:54the ball, possess the ball, ball with turnovers or, or what have
- 25:57you. And he could end up with a bunch
- 25:59of carries. So I, I would probably put my
- 26:01money on the field. I, I don't know if I'd lean
- 26:03McNeil leading the team in carries quite yet, but yeah, I
- 26:06guess, I guess I wouldn't be, I wouldn't be flabbergasted if
- 26:10that happened. We'll say that.
- 26:11Let's go to the quarterback spot.
- 26:13And Elliot, I know you wrote a a big article up at Hawkeye
- 26:15Insider after your conversation with Mark Garnowski yesterday.
- 26:20We heard early on it was rough. He's shaking off the rust and
- 26:22all those different things, but it's kind of continued, maybe
- 26:26not as quick as Mark Gronowski. Do you see him as maybe a tough
- 26:29critiquer of himself? Because listening to your guys's
- 26:33interviews yesterday, that was my take away as it seems like he
- 26:36may be a little hard on himself and talking about the footwork
- 26:38and the like. Yeah, You know, I I guess
- 26:42knowing the amount that I do about Mark, that doesn't
- 26:46surprise me. He seems like a quintessential
- 26:48like easy on others, hard on himself kind of guy.
- 26:52And that's really what a guy like Kirk Ference loves to have
- 26:56a quarterback. So I think it's just a further
- 26:58affirmation that he's a fit at Iowa.
- 27:01And, and when you are a Division One quarterback, when you are
- 27:04that level of a football player, you kind of have to be right.
- 27:07And, and especially moving up from South Dakota State, where
- 27:11it's just a different level of competition.
- 27:13I think having that sense of self criticism is honestly like,
- 27:18I see it as a green flag for a guy like this in coming into
- 27:21this role because I mean, who's to say Kate McNamara had that?
- 27:27It's just a it's just a different level of mindset that
- 27:31that mark brings to the table. And I think it's a recognition
- 27:35that, you know, he's not going to be perfect, that he's going
- 27:37to make mistakes, but he's going to do everything he can in his
- 27:40power to adjust to those mistakes and to fix those
- 27:43mistakes. So yeah, I mean, yeah, I think
- 27:46it's it's there. And a lot of really high level
- 27:49athletes have that. That's how they end up being
- 27:51high level athletes. So I wouldn't say it necessarily
- 27:54caught me by surprise or anything like that, but but it
- 27:57is an attribute that that he had that he brings to the table.
- 28:00One thing that I think caught a lot of people by surprise was
- 28:03was Sam Phillips. I mean, I heard about Gillen
- 28:06Parker leading up to the season over and over in Seth Anderson.
- 28:10Looks like he's finally healthy again.
- 28:12And don't forget about Wegen Ference is going out of his way
- 28:15to mention Reese Vanderzee did so on the Big 10 Network when
- 28:19they were out in Las Vegas. But I never heard about Sam
- 28:21Phillips until the depth chart comes out and there he is as the
- 28:25starting one of his starting wide receivers, all 5 foot seven
- 28:28of them. I'm not knocking his eye, that's
- 28:29a fact. But I'm anxious to see him play.
- 28:33How did he sneak up seemingly on everybody?
- 28:35Or when did he first appear on your read radar, Elliot?
- 28:40Well. I, I don't know about when he
- 28:43first appeared on my radar necessarily.
- 28:45Like I heard some good things about him in the spring when he
- 28:49was available. He did miss a little bit of time
- 28:51just with an injury. I had a source described him to
- 28:54me as silky smooth and I think people are starting to see that
- 28:59a little bit more consistently since he's been available.
- 29:01And he's really, I mean, he got his feet wet in the spring, but
- 29:05I think he's got his feet under him now over the last three
- 29:08weeks of really being able to get the muscle memory down of
- 29:11the offense, learn the intricacies of it all, learn
- 29:14where he needs to be from Mark Kranowski to give, to give him
- 29:16the ball, where to be, to block, to be more effective or to help
- 29:21the team be more effective in the run game.
- 29:23I think it's one of those things with him having been a college
- 29:26football player for so long and having been so productive at
- 29:29Chattanooga, it was about just getting his feet under him on
- 29:33the football field. And that must have clicked
- 29:36within the last three weeks or two weeks.
- 29:38And then it resulted in that confidence that he's built, like
- 29:44moving from that level to to the Big 10.
- 29:47I think you have to reshape your confidence, if that makes sense.
- 29:51It's, it's a similar thing with with Granowski where you've,
- 29:55you've had the success at this level, but then you jump and the
- 29:58speed of the game is different and, and the competition level
- 30:01is different. And once you figure it out, all
- 30:03the confidence in the world comes to you and it's all all
- 30:09forward from there. And I think that's what's
- 30:11happened recently with Sam. I think he had talent, but now
- 30:14it was just about, you know, getting his feet.
- 30:16Like I like I said a few times here and, and moving forward.
- 30:19And you know, it is kind of weird.
- 30:22I did write about this yesterday, the juxtaposition of
- 30:25Sam and Reese on the depth chart.
- 30:27Reese is 6 foot four and I think 200 and some pounds and Sam is
- 30:3357185. And I talked about this a little
- 30:37bit with with John Budmeyer there at media day.
- 30:39And it's like this offense is so unique in that you're not just
- 30:45tall, so you're an X. You have to win matchups.
- 30:47You have to be able to adjust based on the coverage.
- 30:50And that's what Sam brings, Sam brings to the table and enough
- 30:53to put them at the top of the depth chart.
- 30:55I guess I'm really intrigued and excited to see what happens just
- 30:59as much as you guys. One defensive thing I thought
- 31:02was interesting was Cohen Entringer.
- 31:05We know he's a stud. They love him inside the
- 31:07building. 1 start goes to Big 10 football media days.
- 31:10He's listed as a starter at strong safety, then a free
- 31:13safety. It's Xavier Wampa or Cohen
- 31:16Entringer. And then even at the cash
- 31:18position he's listed right behind Zach Leppmer.
- 31:20How's this play out because he can't play 3 positions?
- 31:23Right, right. So I tried my best to make some
- 31:26sense of this and that the OR battles article that I put up
- 31:29trend. I don't know if you saw that,
- 31:31but to me, what that illustrates is Iowa's willingness to adapt
- 31:39to the situations at hand and the versatility that Cohen
- 31:43Enteringer brings to the table for them in those situations, IE
- 31:48the dime package last year that Iowa instituted.
- 31:50I think it started against Washington where Zach Lutmer was
- 31:53effectively another linebacker on the field, but a defensive
- 31:57back, Sir. Sir, I think what that does is
- 32:01it prepares Iowa and where they're at to have that
- 32:08schematic versatility, I suppose.
- 32:11So if I had to get based on the way the depth chart was
- 32:16released, Cohen is your strong safety, right?
- 32:19Zack Lutmer is your cash. And there will be some
- 32:21flexibility between those two guys in those positions.
- 32:25But what lifting Cohen at free safety does is provide them an
- 32:29opportunity to start in that dime package where maybe Cohen
- 32:33is free, maybe Xavier is better strong in that situation and you
- 32:37bring in, I don't know, like a Ty Hudkins or a Kale Kolaric is
- 32:41that extra DB. But yeah, I was surprised by
- 32:44that too. It's definitely unique, but I
- 32:46also think it speaks to Cohen. You mentioned the leadership.
- 32:48You mentioned all these accolades that he's gotten pre
- 32:51season by from his teammates. I really just think it speaks to
- 32:55his potential as being the guy on the defense, being the guy
- 32:59that maybe even leaves after this year, has an NFL caliber
- 33:03type year and ends up in the NFL.
- 33:06So I really just, if anything, think it speaks to schematic
- 33:09versatility, but it's based on, which is how versatile Cohen
- 33:14enteringer is himself. Elliot Cliff hawkeyeinsider.com,
- 33:18part of 24/7 Sports along with his colleague David Eichelt.
- 33:21Well done as always, Ellie. We'll run you down next week if
- 33:24your schedule allows. Thanks for joining us.
- 33:27Yep, Thanks, Ken. Yep.
- 33:28Good to talk to you Elliot Cliff, as we check in on the
- 33:30Hawks as they get set for Albany, Mitch Holtis next Miller
- 33:34and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:46I'm Mary Condon. Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio
- 33:49Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller with
- 33:51you until 2:00. We'll turn things over at that
- 33:56time to drive of the drive off the bench with Sean and Lucas
- 34:02hopefully get to Mitch Holt's the voice of the Kansas City
- 34:04Chiefs for she Rice suspended for six game.
- 34:07Is that ineffect as of now? Does he get?
- 34:09I'm sure he can appeal. Yes, I what the article that I
- 34:13read as it starts week 1 and I do not believe that there was
- 34:17going to be an appeal, at least what I saw.
- 34:18But that was that initial report.
- 34:20So I haven't seen anything deeper than that.
- 34:22All right, well we'll see. Hopefully Mitch will join us, if
- 34:25not, he'll be with us here tomorrow.
- 34:28The team itself, is this it? I mean, does it seem not?
- 34:33Not saying they're not going to win.
- 34:34I've been said it for 9 years. I see it sound like a fool, but
- 34:38I do think they're not going to win the division this year.
- 34:41Is this the last go round for this team?
- 34:44Mahomes is still going to be there.
- 34:46Chris Jones going to be a year older.
- 34:49Kelsey probably not going to be there, right?
- 34:52I I don't love the receivers. Their offensive line I think is
- 34:55finally getting better. I think Simmons gonna be a hell
- 34:57of a player. I think they've got these guys.
- 34:59I'm with you. And that was a obviously a
- 35:02glaring weakness on this line. Crete Humphrey's gonna be there.
- 35:05Trey Smith's gonna be. There, I know it.
- 35:08I I don't love the running game, Pacheco was.
- 35:12Played hurt though last year. But they're trying.
- 35:13They're they're trying to find somebody.
- 35:15I mean, I know every team needs depth.
- 35:18To answer your question, no no. As long as he's there, he's
- 35:22there's team is always going to be a contender.
- 35:24It's going to be like braiding the Patriots.
- 35:26Yeah, and you put it that way, Yeah, kind of stops me in my
- 35:30tracks. Because I heard you plenty of
- 35:32times talking about how that wasn't going to happen for the
- 35:35Patriots, and then it did year after year after year.
- 35:40And I think we're on the same path.
- 35:41You were on the same thing. Yeah, it's just Mahomes.
- 35:44So who's Peyton Manning when it comes to the Brady Manning?
- 35:48Who's who's the Mahomes? Who's going to step in his way?
- 35:50Is it, is it Beau? Is it Herbert?
- 35:52No. Is it Jackson?
- 35:54Is it Burrow? Is it Allen?
- 35:56I mean, the AFC is loaded with quarterbacks.
- 35:58I. Think the answer because Burrow
- 36:00has had success against. Him I know he has.
- 36:02I think the answer has no defense.
- 36:04It's Josh Allen. Josh Allen is what Peyton
- 36:07Manning was, at least in the front half of his career.
- 36:10Talented guy puts up huge numbers, you know, craps the bed
- 36:14when it matters most. And that's not fair to Josh
- 36:16Allen because it's been his defense many a times.
- 36:18Speaking of that defense, I watched Hard Knocks.
- 36:21The episode. Oh, you did?
- 36:22Yeah, they stink. I'm not sure belt buffalo's
- 36:25getting there this year. I'm with.
- 36:26I'd love to see it. I really would.
- 36:28Cincinnati's terrible defensively.
- 36:30Buffalo's terrible defensively. You know, the most complete team
- 36:33in the AFC is, I think. Don't say you're proud I'm not.
- 36:35OK, good. That's the second.
- 36:37The the Ravens. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:40I think they're the most complete team in the year, maybe
- 36:42the most complete team in the NFL.
- 36:44The Jay Higgins story, and I know a lot of it is his dad and
- 36:49the goofiness and the fun and it elevates him, I think just in
- 36:53terms of he's just a guy out there having a great time.
- 36:56Attorney is a great hawk, yes. And you have.
- 36:59Look at the shoes he filled. But to take over for Jack
- 37:02Campbell and to do what he did in the course of his career
- 37:07back-to-back years, comes back for another year capsule with
- 37:10another All American season. He's undersized, he's not fast.
- 37:14And he didn't go to Cleveland. He went to Baltimore.
- 37:18One of the most successful organizations building a roster
- 37:21that you're going to find at the league, without a doubt.
- 37:23And he found a way on. He was rated the best
- 37:26linebacker. Those stories of those kind of
- 37:29guys. Jack Campbell, we knew he's
- 37:31going to be good. Then you hear all these knocks
- 37:33against Jay Higgins like, well, maybe we just miss.
- 37:35Or you can watch football and you can see the Jay Higgins was
- 37:38one hell of a football player. What, did they always just plug
- 37:41in the tape? Plug in the tape, right?
- 37:42It's true, absolutely. It's true with him.
- 37:45How you can watch that guy say enough.
- 37:47I don't think that equates to the NFL.
- 37:49He's a football player. He's a football player and for
- 37:51that reason, for that reason alone, they're they're going to
- 37:54be a contender, going to be a contender every single year.
- 37:57I think Justin Tucker's not there.
- 38:00Is that maybe the question? Because he was automatic this
- 38:03might this guy? As good of a kicker as we've.
- 38:08Seen I was going to say I don't want to put him as the best
- 38:10kicker of all time. That's why he stopped.
- 38:12But he's he's on the list of the best ever play that position
- 38:15right? And the guy's name that's taking
- 38:17his spot is loop. I don't know Tyler Loop.
- 38:19Tyler Loop because he's going to say I don't know his first. 6th
- 38:21rounder out of Arizona. That's where he's from.
- 38:23Yep, pretty big shoes to fill, yes, right.
- 38:27But also remember Justin Tucker stunk last year.
- 38:29He was terrible. He was, but was not just for his
- 38:32standards because if it was maybe anybody else in the NFL
- 38:35that did had the season he did last year, he would have been
- 38:38cut. But because it was Justin Tucker
- 38:40reputation, they couldn't do it. And Harbaugh?
- 38:42Kept saying I've seen him make big kicks before.
- 38:43He's my guy. I'm going to keep sending him
- 38:45out there. Now you have to wonder if
- 38:47there's a little bit more to. Them, absolutely.
- 38:49As far as he knew, it was, you know, his future was about to
- 38:53the turn it was about to take his life for the spot that he
- 38:57put himself in. I think they're the most
- 38:59complete team, Trent. I think that they're favored for
- 39:02a reason. And I would be surprised if they
- 39:06don't, you know, play for a Super Bowl.
- 39:09Did Jake Hummel also make the team for the Ravens?
- 39:11I haven't seen their final 53, but I know he was right there.
- 39:14Close. Oh, I don't know.
- 39:15You know what Doc put out the he he updated where all Yeah, I'm
- 39:20looking at the roster right now. I'm looking at the depth chart
- 39:22on ESPN.com. Jake Hummel is the second
- 39:25teamer, Jason. Yeah, behind Trenton Simpson, J
- 39:29Higgins, behind Roquan Smith. How about that clone and a Hawk?
- 39:35A lot of special teams for those guys and I think a lot of what?
- 39:37Year. Is this now for Hummel 2 or 3?
- 39:40Speaking of putting together a career I did not think was going
- 39:42to happen. Jay Cummel, tip of the ball cap.
- 39:45That's great. What year is it for him?
- 39:47Is it year three-year 4, year 4, Three years with the Rams and
- 39:52now year 4 for him. Well done, well done.
- 39:55Take time out, come back head Chicago Cappy.
- 39:57He joins us next. Get to the Bears, get to the
