- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: My co-host, Tristan McGonagall, is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Tristan, we have been brought back down to Earth.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Steven, recording this on a Thursday afternoon, right before Game Day weekend is hearkening me back to our college days.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: And I'm hearkening back to our college days in multiple ways.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: First off, is us shoving this assignment in right before midnight.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Which we're doing right now.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: And two, watching Texas Tech lose in football games.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: A very regular thing for our tw for 2014 to 2018 campaign in Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: We own that school, so anyone else there probably remembers us.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Um so dude, it's not great right now.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Listen, I am happier than I was.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: And I can tell you a reason, and it's not tech related, but I have to give them a shout out because my French tree that I root for on the NBA court absolutely dominated the Dallas Mavericks last night.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: And I know most of the listeners are just not gonna like that, but hey, it was a treat.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: It was lovely.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: I'm in a good mood today.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: And hey, we may not be able to play the song, but we have a game ahead of us this week that is looking good, and I think should be a nice little refresher.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: But let's talk about the toughie.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about Arizona State.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech loses 22-26 on the road against the Sun Devils.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, they go to 3-1 in Big 12 play and 6-1 overall for the first loss of the season.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Let me start by this.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Did you think the first loss of the season for the Texas Tech Red Raiders was gonna come seven weeks into the year?
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: No.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: And that makes you feel better.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Yes, it does.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I mean, if it they I know I know I know the way you're you're kind of prompting this up right now.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: It's you're saying, like, look, if you're six and one in week seven, are you happy, Texas Tech fan?
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: And I think 95% of the fans would say, yeah, dude, I'm pretty dang happy about it.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: And the question would just be, who was it to?
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Most people are like, uh, probably the Utah game, right?
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Or if they didn't say that, it'd be the Arizona State game, gotta be the defending champs, right?
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: So the good news is you can go back and tell yourself, say, hey, yeah, it was that one.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: It wasn't it wasn't the Houston game, like the trap game that it was shipping up to be wasn't a home loss, which would have been much harder to swallow.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: It was indeed to the defending champions of the Big 12 in Arizona State.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: So I think most vote most fans, I think most fans have their heads on right, to be honest.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen too much over reactions yet.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, I've seen some here and there of like, let's you know, press the break a bit.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: But all in all, dude, I'm not upset either.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: But I'm just we're so used to the beatdown that this six and one, being able to say six to one feels pretty good.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Do not put it in the papers that I am upset.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: I am not upset.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Uh no, I mean we were we were upset on Saturday, obviously, because it was a heartbreaker.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: Uh the way that it happened was pretty brutal.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: It was they they gave it to us.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: We had we were given hope, and then it was stripped away by Jordan Tyson on a bum leg and Sam Sam Levitt making an unbelievable play on fourth down, and really just an overall.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, I can't so this team's good.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: This Arizona State team is good.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Clearly, with Sam Levitt, they are a very, very good team.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Yes, they've lost twice.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: One on one was to Mississippi State on the road with all the Klanga Cowbell going on, and they were probably psyched out.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Should have won that game, by the way, but they blew it, so that was their first loss, and their second loss was to Utah where they didn't have Sam Levitt.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: They got smoked.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: We yes, but they had but they had Jeff Sims, and Jeff Sims stinks.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: So Sam Levitt, obviously, very good football player.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: I everybody would probably put him in the top three quarterbacks, at least, if not top two, if not the best quarterback in the Big 12 currently.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: So I, you know, on its face, it's really not that bad of a loss.
- 5:00SPEAKER_02: That sounds like Cope.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: We also had a backup quarterback playing.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I know a lot of people were high on Will Hammond going into this year and going and after the Utah game and after he played well in the other game that uh that Barron went down in, but you know, clearly a tough road for him.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: I I don't think he was really set up for success from uh Mac Lefwich and his play calling.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: That was a big uh gripe from Texas Tech fans.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, I I think ultimately when you're looking back at it, it was a lot to ask for Will Hammond to go win this game.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: And he came up just a little bit short, but dude showed spunk at the very end and and got us back into it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, I I it's it sucks because you see the one loss and you really we were rolling, you really didn't think if we got past this one, you know, it was like BYU's really the only one left that you think can give us a chance, and uh and you lost.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: So we move on, man.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: It's not, it's uh it is what it is.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I just it wasn't obviously just on having a backup quarterback in there.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: He did not play to a starting quarterback bar.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: I think I think it's clear that I'm of the opinion, again, this sounds like go.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: I am of the opinion that if Barron Morton played that game, we would have won.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: I I just I just think that Barron Morton would have been able to make more plays happen downfield in order to put you in a better position to score.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I I just don't think that Will Hammond was confident enough or you know, fleshed out enough to be able to pull that off right now in a hardcore environment.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: But I do not think that Will had any favors done by him by the coaching staff.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: I think we made a lot of bonehead decisions.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Um, and what was really frustrating about watching the offense and with special teams was I feel like we were on this seesaw, this teetering between playing way too conservatively and playing way too aggressively.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Like it was just way too much back and forth, like going for it on fourth when we really didn't need to, or uh bonehead, just bonehead play calls over and over again that are clearly not working, not giving the ball to your running back, getting him going enough, um, which is odd when we were playing so conservatively, uh, but the pass plays were often you know, screen plays, pretty conservative pass plays.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: So it was just it was just a very bizarre head scratching situation.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: I think we saw some growing a growing pain game from Mack Leftwich.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: He's still only what 31 years old and he's never coached in this level of football.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna give him a bit of grace there.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but like I said, dude, I really think that the coaching staff made some big bone-headed moves.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: I I think the only coach that comes out of that game with a of course a solid outing is once again Shieldwood.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, that first half, you hold him to nine points.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: You had no business holding them to nine points.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: Because in the first half, they're seemingly doing a lot that they wanted to do against your defense, uh, making big plays downfield, but it was a much, very much a bend-on't break situation for our guys.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Kept holding them to field goals, thinking like, look, our defense has us in here.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: We even took the lead in this in the first half.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: Um, and all because our defense held their scoring drives to just field goals.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: So I'm still gonna give my flower.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Wait, no, we didn't take, yeah, we took the lead, and then they they got the field goal right back.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Um, so my flower is still good to the defense.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: They obviously blew it at the end, but I mean, with how defense has been playing all dang year, I'm just not gonna light them on fire.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: Okay, and it's just not fair with the way the offense played all game.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: That's on the offense, not the defense.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Well, and it really sucked because you had four turnovers that all took bad bounces that Arizona State then recovered.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, you you knocked out three balls, I think.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: The other one, it was it was really tight.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: So, man, sometimes stuff just doesn't go your way.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: And I think from that perspective, it it just didn't go their way.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: Obviously, the big fourth down that you had at the end, Sam Levitt made a hell of a play.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Jordan Tyson on a on a bum hamstring made a hell of a play, and you just have to kind of give it up to them because uh that showed a lot of toughness for them to get scored 15 straight points in like a minute and a half scored on them to retake the lead for Texas Tech, been trailing the entire game.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, you're kind of stunned in the moment, and they didn't even flinch and just went right back down the field and scored a touchdown on you.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: And so, from you know, from that area, it it it just kind of stinks.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: This was such such a weird game when we're looking, and we're gonna look back at this game and be like, that was such a weird game.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, and the result obviously did not end up the way that we wanted it to.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: But hey man, that's a good team.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Did we get any clarity on the bizarre fourth play, fourth down play in the uh in the fourth quarter?
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: So I don't want to I think that's what I think that's what somebody was saying was that it was it was Hammond's decision to change out of that play and try you know the little uh the little RPO action, and it just wasn't that wasn't what you needed to do.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: I am very surprised.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: I mean it's easy to say now.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: I'm sure they love Hammond, but I'm surprised that he they gave him that sort of liberty in that situation.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised the coaching staff even would allow that, you know, the him to allow him to call an audible in that situation.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Um, but I mean they're a call to play caller for a reason, right?
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's just such such a weird thing for uh him to like he's got a bright kid to decide to run an option play to the short side of the field in a long yardage situation.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Like I just it's just befuddling.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: It wasn't it wasn't a good play.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: There were a couple fourth downs that were just poorly called and just not executed properly.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: The uh you said it earlier, but Cam Dickey got nine carries, Jacoby Williams got three carries.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: That can't happen.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: These two these two guys are so talented and have shown so much this season.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: And I know Arizona State's run defense is pretty good, but you have to give those guys more just more.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: They're too dynamic, they're too good.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: Cam Dickey's coming off a 263-yard rushing game, and you give him nine carries, like that's ridiculous.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Jacoby Williams is as dynamic as a player as you have on this team.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: You gave him three carries.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Like, this isn't this is ridiculous, yeah, that these guys didn't get more.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: And I know they knew that Hammond can run.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Everybody knows Hammond can run.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: This is not there's been enough film from the Utah game, from prior games that Hammond has taken over that we know he can run the ball.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: So why I I just it's it's still confusing to me, the the way that MacLephitch called this game, and uh, I think it's gonna haunt him for a while.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: You got me all twisted up again because I remember the first half, it was just QB drone after QB run after QB run, and none of them worked, not a one.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: I think like the highest yardage was four yards on a run, like it was it was crazy in the first half.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Um, again, dude, just just a nutty situation on offense, but man, it's kind of crazy to watch the opposing fan storm the field against Texas Tech.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Like that's that's a crazy feeling, right?
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Like that we were the we were the Titans that's at topple.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: And dude, that field goal, what that that thing like slammed the ground.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: I could have killed somebody.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: I'm glad that nothing happened to anybody, whether it be a fan on the field or one of our players or one of their players.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was it was really a dangerous steal.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: It like smacked to the ground.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Kind of got swept under the rug a little bit.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: We've the big 12 made a big old fuss about tortillas lately, and uh yeah, it seemed I I know they got fined for it, but it was like they got fined for the field storm.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know if they got they really noticed how terrible that could have been.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: They got lucky as crap, dude.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: Like, or everyone there got lucky as crap because that that I feel like that really could either seriously maim somebody or legitimately killed somebody if it if it really just snapped like domed somebody, like that's that thing slammed down, man.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: That was yeah, yeah, that was that was tough.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: Uh glad nobody got hurt there.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, man, this is when you brush it off and you move on.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: And and luckily, I think this week is a uh a real good opportunity to get right and to get your offense in in place and uh and just you know get back on track.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree, dude.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Um, I really hope that Mac Lefwich unreleased like releases his demons on OSU.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: Like, I hope we win by 40 points.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: I really hope that it's just an annihilation where you just let the offense run wild, get everybody going again, feeling good, feeling confident before you go to Manhattan.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: So I know that we are truly looking ahead, but I mean obviously Oklahoma State just hasn't really given anybody a reason to be concerned yet.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Um, I really hope that we're not that game.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: I don't see that happening.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be a sold-out crowd, it's gonna be loud.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: And uh I'm excited to see Will Hammond get get comfortable again, like get in in the home environment, keep Barron resting, and let Morton get uh get ready for uh Manhattan because we're clearly gonna need him for another road game.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was announced that Will Hammond will be starting again against Oklahoma State, which I think is a good decision based on just giving Barron a little more rest.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: He's gonna be available in an emergency role similar to what happened against Arizona State.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: He wasn't quite suited up, but he was available uh just in case you know we had some disastrous injuries and all that.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I mean, there's not really much to talk to talk about with this Oklahoma State team.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: It's uh obviously my Gundy fired interim coach Doug Meachum.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: They just don't have the talent on this team.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: They didn't have the talent on this team before they had all these guys decide to redshirt and transfer out of the program after Gundy got fired.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: So it's just, you know, you kind of worry about some of these teams because it's really like a you know eff it attitude.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: We have literally nothing to lose.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: We're going into Lubbock against a really, really good team.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, we're just not gonna care.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: And sometimes that works out for those opponents.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: So there's always that kind of factor to worry about.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: But um, no, this defense is still too good.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: There, I I would be surprised if Oklahoma State, unless they're getting real tricky and execute, you know, substantially well um on on some of these plays that they're gonna get you know more than a touchdown on us.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: I would be surprised, honestly.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, this is this is an opportunity for Will Hammond to go in and just get right and uh and get back on track.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: We need to get out of there and seven and one, uh, hopefully with a better looking Big 12 championship race.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, because I mean, unfortunately, that loss hurts a little more than you realize because you look, you're actually not in Arlington right now.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, right now it's BYU in Cincinnati.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: So it's it's uh it that's painful, and you there's a good chance you lost the bye week uh in the postseason.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Um, not a huge deal.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think we'd all just be thrilled to go to the playoffs in general.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Um, but obviously, uh first things first, I want the Big 12 trophy.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I that's my that is what I want the most right now, more than anything, even more than a playoff appearance.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: I'd just like to see us with a Big 12 trophy.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Um so our biggest uh foes here for being in Arlington are certainly BYU in Cincinnati and Arizona State right now, and I believe Utah.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Um they have a tougher path now that they lost last week to BYU.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's right.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: They lost.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, they lost to us too as well.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: My bad.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: I was I was neglecting that.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: So Cincinnati's hosting Baylor.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Baylor's so up and down, and they haven't traveled well, it seems.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: So I'm sure Cincinnati's gonna keep rolling on that.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: BYU is going to Iowa State.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: That can be kind of tricky.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: I think Ames could be a tricky place for them.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Um, and Iowa State might be playing angry.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and Arizona State's hosting Houston, and Houston's not a slouch.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: So that is that's the most interesting game this week is is that matchup because one you mentioned you know the contenders for this.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Houston's six and one.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: They have the same record.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: I forgot to Houston has the same Big 12 record, they have the same overall record as you do, and yes, their schedule has not been you know phenomenal.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: And you beat them by you know 24 points at their place.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: So clearly, you know, you're feeling pretty good about tech over Houston right now, but that teams pretty good, and they're showing that they're spunky and it and they're going to Arizona State, and you know, if they could pull it out, that's that's a huge one for them.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: So they're definitely not a slouch, yeah.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: And for us, I mean we're we're rooting hard for it, honestly.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Joe Kooks, whose house, um there, Koog's house there.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: But uh, but yeah, dude, I let's just let's crush Oklahoma State, let's get our minds right and get uh back on track here because I know we're all kind of down on the dumps right now, but I I think smoke in Oklahoma State, which will feel good after a decade of getting our behinds tossed around by them.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, we've had them here off and on a little bit lately, but um, it'll be good till release some demons get right.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Um it couldn't Oklahoma State could not be coming out a better time.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Oklahoma State one and six on the year.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Year one win.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: UT Martin, which is not in Texas, in Tennessee.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: In Chattanooga.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: UT Martin.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Chattanooga.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: But yeah, man, should be fun.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: Looking forward for a get right game.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: If uh if we struggle with Oklahoma State, we got a lot more issues than uh things are getting scary.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: This is yeah, I mean, this is the time, this is the time where Joey McGuire and the staff are gonna show, you know, how really locked in this locker room is because these guys are gonna face adversity.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: This obviously was the first, you know, real adversity that we've faced all season.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: So um it's all about how you respond.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: And this is, you know, he always talks about what's next.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: This is what's next.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: So this is the mentality that they need to go into uh erase Arizona State and move on with the rest of the year.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: So all right, man.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Um there's been a lot of talk, and people are tired of it of tortillas.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Everyone's getting sick and tired of talking about tortillas.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: So what are we gonna do?
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: We're gonna talk about tortillas a little bit.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Um banned completely.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: No, not the band.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: They are banned.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Tortillas are banned from Joan's ATT Stadium, her Kirby Ho cut taking over Joey's weekly presser at the very beginning and announcing that not even on opening kickoff will they be tolerated and fans will be ejected from the stadium.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's I don't know, it sucks.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: I hate it.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: I I hate it.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: I hate that we have to do this.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: It's stupid, and yeah, the tortilla thing.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: I know we're all sick and tired of talking about it.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: I know that it's just a you know harmless tradition that we can easily do away with for the betterment of the team.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: I understand it.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't throw tortillas, we're not gonna recommend people throw tortillas, but it sucks.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: It still sucks that this tradition is being singled out because the Big 12 ADs and Brad Your Mark are soft.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: It's just all the crying, dude.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: And it's so crazy that the allegations levied against Texas Tech from Kansas is really the catalyst for this.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: Like it's it had Kansas not whined as much as they did after their loss.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: I really don't think this is happening.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: I really don't.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Like, if they don't make a huge thing out of the pocket knife where he's just levying allegations that a pocket knife was thrown at them, like that's that's that's asinine to just levy that allegation, like in a press conference.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Like, what?
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Like, that's absolutely out of line, and we're the ones being punished for it.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: Like, that's there's no justice in that.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: Well, it goes back even before that.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: They did if they did nothing at the beginning of the year and didn't make this whole fuss about 15 to 1, uh, have a whole vote about it and do all this, we wouldn't be in this situation.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Like, tech fans are rebellious, and we don't like being told what to do.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: So as soon as you tell us what to do, we're gonna lean into the opposite.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: And it's just never been a harmful deal.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: There's it's always just been hearsay, it's always been a bunch of crap that everybody from Patterson to AM fans to Kansas to Lance Lipold to all like it, all every allegation has been proven either false or no proof at all.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Like it just it's so stupid how we get this reputation based on a couple sore losers that can't get over themselves and try to, you know, discredit a a harmless tradition with a bunch of Mexican bread that uh we fly through the air.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: So this is just this is the kind of stuff that you know.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Makes this makes college sports a little worse and uh you know it makes everything a little less fun.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Well, it's I tell you what, for the rest of the season, they're still gonna be throwing tortillas, it's still going to happen.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: So it'll be interesting to see what the reaction is initially, whenever like in the first wave, because it'll really just be a first wave thing, like a kickoff thing.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: That's all it's gonna be, I bet.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Because so few people will have it at that point.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: So we need to clarify the rule itself has not necessarily changed okay from what they decided at the beginning of the year.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: So tech is not gonna get penalized on the kickoff, you know, on the first one, they're gonna get a warning, but they nobody gets penalized.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: But on the second one, it's a hundred thousand dollar fine for Texas Tech.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Absurd.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: And so what Kirby Hoke then had to do is really lean into just not doing it because if you stop it completely, then there's no chance you get the you know, even close to the second warning.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: So it's I you know whether the Big 12 follows through with that or whether they decide next week to then do it on the first on the first one, I don't I don't really care because the Big 12 is a bunch of wusses for doing any of this in the first place.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: But just don't throw tortillas, don't do it because this team doesn't deserve to be penalized for um, you know, uh what is a harmless tradition, but nonetheless, it's still a rule and you got to follow the rule.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: And it, you know, just don't throw them.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Just don't do it.
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: I I hope that the security staff is a little tighter and actually, you know, really checks boots and really checks, you know, um, where people tend to store their tortillas as they're walking into the stadium.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: But um, yeah, I mean it's just not worth it right now.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: It's so it's stupid that we're in this position, but it's not worth it to even do it.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Tell you what, man, it's it's kind of interesting that we were at the last tortilla game.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: And it was it was uh it was a huge shebang of tortillas, man.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: And they kept coming, they kept coming, they kept coming, and it was awesome.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: But you know, it's really sad to watch it.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: I bet it's gonna go dormant.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: Um, it might come back eventually, but it just sucks.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: It just sucks to watch the uniqueness of college football, you know, lither on the vine like this.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: And it just sucks like how our traditions being singled out by other schools get to have absurd traditions too, like like how Mississippi State gets to have their cowbells, you know, like they're a noisemaker, which isn't it's that's an NCA rule, you're not really allowed to have those in the stands.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: Um, and but we can't throw flour, we can't throw round baked flour.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: They like it's just it's crazy, it's crazy.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: It's stupid.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: All right, let's move, let's move on.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: People are ready to okay.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: Hold on.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: I have one more thing.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: The people that are thinking that, like, because we talk about you know being upset over tortillas that that has affected the team or whatever, like this affects whatever people say on Twitter affects how the team performs.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: Stop it.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's we're talking about stuff.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: These are the old farts that are like, no, don't I don't care what uniform they wear as long as they win the football game.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: It's like, shut up, man.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: We're just trying to have fun, talk about different things.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Quit being an old fart about things, like let's like get over it.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: So that's my final that's my final word on it.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: All right, I agreed, old man.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: Sports gambling.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: That's that's that's in the news.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: I just wanted to hear you rip on it because you sounded like you had a lot of opinions on it earlier.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, so it sparked because Johnce Billups, the Portland Trail Trailblazers head coach, just got arrested uh for illegal poker gambling operation that he has uh I don't supposedly partaken in, along with a current NBA player, Terry Rozier, uh of the I don't even know who he's playing for at this point, Miami or somebody.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Um and former current assistant coach, former player Damon Jones, also arrested.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: So a big deal, really big deal, in uh to get a current head coach of a professional league and a current player of a professional league being arrested over gambling.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: It's not necessarily sports gambling per se, but it just got me thinking like, man, this stuff has gotten too far.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna sound like a you know, I I know that people like to gamble, I know that you know, some people think that it's not that big a deal, but I just think it's gotten too normalized in the professional leagues and in college sports now, because there was a recent like push to approve college athletes being able to bet on professional sports.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: And it's like, guys, let's how about we just go back a little bit on this?
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: How about we just say, how about just don't gamble if you play sports or if you are you know personally involved with the National Basketball Association, you don't endorse a fan duel or a DraftKings.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: If you're ESPN that televises the product, maybe you don't push for it.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: I don't care if a Barstool Sports does it, I don't care if the Ringer does it, I don't care if these like one-off you know entities that that you know talk about gambling and do all that in the in the right way and don't really have any affiliation with the leagues.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: I'm fine with that.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: I don't really care.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: And I really don't care about sports gambling in in general.
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: Like uh do it if you want, like if it's legal in your state, whatever.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: But I just don't I I don't know why it's gotten as big as it has.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: And well, I know why, because it's a huge financial, you know, uh uh just positive for a lot of different companies and stuff like that.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: But I don't know, I just feel like it's gotten too far.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I'm with you, man.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Like uh gambling has become so pervasive inside of our uh inside of athletics in general.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's like completely intertwined with it at this point.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Um I'm with you, like I'm not a gambler.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: I like I I put two bucks on a horse and then use that to buy a drink, you know, if I win.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't ever go past something like that.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Um I'm not you're not casting.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: You also don't ever win.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: So yeah, exactly.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: I'm not I'm not casting judgment on anybody here.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: I'm saying, like, it's I so I'm not and I'm in that zone.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: I'm just like it's your money, you know, you should be able to do what you want with it as long as it's you know within ethical legal bounds.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Um but it it's it's been it's kind of it's it's crazy.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: It's never been like this.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: It's obviously due to the uh the explosion of the internet that has now infiltrated literally everything of our lives, um, that these gambling companies have been able to make it a nationwide thing or even a global thing that this happens for literally every sporting event out there.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: So it's it's become it's become a bit of a wild west.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: It's kind of become incredibly overbearing, in my opinion.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Um and honestly, it's it's it's just uh you're you're really you're you're you're hopefully not trapping the sport under the weight of this.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: You know, I don't want sports to be basically just there for the service of gambling companies, which is kind of honestly that's kind of a starting of the field, like even at the collegiate level.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: It's like you know, uh you're we we go we look at the money lines to see uh who's gonna win.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: And obviously, I think that perhaps television companies like to see who what biggest in the biggest what games are being bet on so they put them on TV.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: So it's just like it's all becoming too much, and we we probably sound like prudes complaining about it, but it just it you know, it just never been like this.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: I think there can be a happy medium, and unfortunately, a lot of the times with these types of things, there's they either go overboard or they go too hardcore on stopping it, and it's like you know, how ESPN used to be when they couldn't discuss gambling was kind of ridiculous.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: And it's like you can talk about the money line, you can talk about you know which team is expected to win in a gambling sense, like that should be allowed, but you don't need ESPN bet, you know, like you don't need a whole entity that sounds like as a part of your television product that allow that you know calls for this type of stuff because they're so intertwined with the leagues themselves, and so you know, and when you're getting scandals like this of of guys legitimately betting, you know, on information that they hold and that they can decide, I mean, that's as unethical as it gets, man.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: And that is just causing all sorts of issues, and it's just like uh it's I I just feel like it's hit a point where you're like, come on, let's let's ease up.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and there's been uh a common conspiracy amongst sports fans that sometimes the network chooses who they want to win.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: And ESPN being so having its own gambling platform does not help the trust at all.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: At all.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: So that really that really starts to put a stink in people's pie, thinking like, yo, like uh is this being swayed one way or the other just so they can hit the right bets, you know, get the right bets in and all that.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Um, it's it it's all sketchy, you know, and it's just I just want to turn on my TV and watch sports ball for the hell of it, not because I got money on it, you know.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: But that would we're we're different.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's it's that's not everything.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: Some people would like to do that, and there's nothing.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: And again, man, I'm just gonna if you want to bet on a three-legged parlay for you know whatever to happen, whatever, and then you bet on Texas Tech to win every game the rest of the year, lose every game.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: I don't really care, man.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: You're cool, you do what you want with your money.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: I'm not I'm not even bashing you for gambling at all for sports gambling.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: I just I just think it's gone too far for the networks and the professional leagues and the leagues themselves, and they just don't need to be as involved as they are in it and uh leave that for the uh for the one-off entities and for everybody to just enjoy responsibly.
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: You know, it's very similar to alcohol, you can go way overboard with it, but you know, you shouldn't have the it should be accessible to everybody that fits within the guidelines.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: Like it's up to them to decide on how they use it.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I'm not saying ban all gambling, but I am saying that you know, probably ban gambling from the NBA to you know say, hey, use DraftKings to bet on this or whatever.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I agree.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: That's that's my old man take of the day, I guess.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: Um I'm with you, dude.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, quit talking about uniforms and tortillas and get on with the real football.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: Let me bounce you out for the old man takes.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Stop wearing pajamas in public.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: I don't care where you're going.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: If you're getting out of the car, you better not be wearing pajamas.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: How do you feel about the airport?
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: Because I'll I think we're on the same page here.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: Well, or we're absolutely on the same page.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: People forget that we live in a civilized society when they enter the airport, which is crazy because the airport should be like the pinnacle of our civilization, you know.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Like it should be a big deal that we're hoping and fly through the sky to go to our destination, but we're gonna treat it like it's the DMB, it's bananas.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: The airport used to mean something.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: We go back 500 years as soon as we get past TSA.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: Everybody just goes back to K Man's time.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 500 years is K-Man's.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna I'm gonna sleep on the ground, I'm gonna not wear shoes, I'm gonna just you know, throw up everywhere.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't really care.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm the I'm gonna take off my shoes.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: The airport etiquette in today's society is ridiculous and gross.
- 33:39SPEAKER_02: I do agree on the pajama thing.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: People are getting too loosey-goosey with pajamas.
- 33:44SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: Wear sweatpants.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: Like don't we don't need some fuzzy little bullshit that you have on your pants, like going to Whataburger?
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Like, don't do that.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: Wear some jeans.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: How about that?
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: Even even those sweats, I'm gonna go easy on that one.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: As long as you're like nicer, coats, like and I don't know.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: See, you're you're going too far.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: People we wear joggers, not people sweatpants.
- 34:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, not you know, stained ass sweatpants that you're just like you know, you spilled half your Gatorade bottle on or whatever.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Hey, and and another thing about the airport while we're on it, while we're on the topic.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: Wow, it's way off.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: So we never do this way off topic.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: Um, it do not lay down on the gate seats, okay.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: People would like to sit down.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Do not lay down on the gate seats, okay?
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: And under no this is general public thing, another old man take.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Under no circumstances do you let anything come through your speakers?
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Under no circumstances, you either have headphones or you just suffer, okay?
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: You are not playing that through your speakers.
- 34:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's man, get a thing of wired headphones.
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: Like, you don't need airpods, you don't need these fancy stuff, you don't need beats, you don't need all this stuff.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Like, just just don't play, don't talk to somebody on speakerphone.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: This is a it's a public area, man.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: I'll agree with you.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, old man takes.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: I like this.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: I like old man, I like old man takes maybe maybe we can new segment.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: Old man takes you you're full of them.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, you got old man takes for day.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: You're you're basically 75 years old.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: So I am.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to be 75.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: And then I can say these things and people won't think it's weird.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: Well, they're gonna they're just gonna talk crap behind your back.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: Now they're now they think it is weird that you're saying this as a as a almost 30-year-old man, and you're like, get off my lawn.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: You know, like I don't know.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: You can step on my lawn all the all you want.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: It's it's sad and gross.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: Me too, dude.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: Summer killed me.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: First time homeowners, woo.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fun times.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: All right, buddy.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: Let's go beat some Oklahoma State booty this weekend.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: I'm looking forward to it.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: What time do we play?
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: For the people uh uh three three p.m.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: uh central time, ESPNU.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: If you are not located in the great city of Lubbock, Texas.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: Oklahoma State Cowboys, let's bring them to one and seven.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: Let's bring us to seven and one.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Looking forward to it.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: Tristan, you have a song of the week.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: Let's hear it.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: I do, Steven.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: You remember how a couple weekends ago we did hang out with Flatland Cavalry, and last week you did do a Flatland Cavalry song.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna keep it redundant and do another Flatland Cavalry song because this is talking Flatland.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna throw a back a few albums, okay?
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna do the Welcome to Country Land album, which is uh their junior album.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: Um, and I'm gonna go with it's it's we're coming on the busy season of the year.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: We're all stressed out, we're all kind of bummed out on the football game last weekend.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Um I'm gonna go with Tilt Your Chair Back by Flatland Cavalry, one of those songs that says, take a breath, drink some tea, it's all good.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: And that's how we're gonna feel after this Arizona State game.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: Like life's never been better in TechSteck football right now, even with the tortilla crap.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: And I know the holiday season's here, but just take a breath, tilt your chair back, flatline cavalry.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: When your smile fades, when your heart lacks, toss your care down.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: Tilt your chair back.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: Read some books.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: Go away.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: Go away.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Read some books.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, since Halloween's coming up, uh, the best costume that my wife and I have ever done is Nacho Libre.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: It was electric.
- 37:49SPEAKER_02: That was I I we're never gonna top that again.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: I I've come to grips with it.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: Um our top gun was pretty good.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Top gun was good.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Top gun was good.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: I I do wish I bought the white boots that Jack Black wore in that.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: That was the one thing that I did not have for that costume, but everything else was a plus.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: And then my wife went as the nun in Carnacion.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: So great song, Fly Lane Calvary Rules.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: My song of the week is a little similar to your vibe here.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: So uh we're a little sad, we're a little down.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, so we're trying to, you know, get get back up a little bit and enjoy ourselves.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: But um, this song of the week is very fitting for how we're feeling right now.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Save it for a rainy day, Kenny Chesney.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: Because, first off, anthem, great song, Kenny.
