- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. Provincial health ministers are warning of a
- 0:09Speaker 1: fiscal cliff coming as $ 1. 2 billion in federal funding for
- 0:14Speaker 1: mental health, addictions, and home care is due to expire
- 0:18Speaker 1: in March. The ministers met virtually this week to impress
- 0:21Speaker 1: on Ottawa the importance of having the funding continue. Provincial
- 0:25Speaker 1: Health Minister Jody Wall says the province just announced two
- 0:28Speaker 1: health care projects that could be directly affected by a
- 0:31Speaker 1: cut to federal funding. They include the expansion of services
- 0:35Speaker 1: at Humberwood and the opening of the new long-term care
- 0:37Speaker 1: beds in Cornerbrook.
- 0:39Speaker 2: So we do foresee the impact if the funding is
- 0:42Speaker 2: not renewed because there's a lot of good things going
- 0:46Speaker 2: on here in the province with respect to health care.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And we can certainly have those bilateral agreements, if they
- 0:51Speaker 2: are renewed, we can certainly make sure that we continue
- 0:55Speaker 2: with those, providing those services for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Recent pictures and video taken in the Goose Arm area
- 1:01Speaker 1: on the province's west coast have fueled speculation about the
- 1:04Speaker 1: continued infiltration of wolves onto the island from Labrador. Linda
- 1:09Speaker 1: Swain reports.
- 1:10Speaker 3: The Department of Forestry says the first cases of Labrador
- 1:13Speaker 3: gray wolves on the island were officially documented in 2008
- 1:15Speaker 3: and 2012. The province's Wildlife Division has collected genetic information
- 1:21Speaker 3: from about 500 carcasses since 2013, with four on the
- 1:25Speaker 3: island confirmed to be Labrador grey wolves and five identified
- 1:29Speaker 3: as coyote-dog hybrids. The department has also detected evidence of
- 1:33Speaker 3: some wolf DNA in 28 animals, although it's difficult to
- 1:37Speaker 3: say when the interbreeding occurred. The department says, based on
- 1:40Speaker 3: available information, the wolf population on the island is likely small,
- 1:44Speaker 3: and while evidence suggests that wolves on the island have
- 1:47Speaker 3: interbred with coyotes, the wolf genetics are likely to remain
- 1:50Speaker 3: diluted because of the island's large coyote population. In the meantime,
- 1:54Speaker 3: coyote pups can stay with their parents for more than
- 1:57Speaker 3: a year, and reports of packs of coyotes in Newfoundland
- 2:00Speaker 3: are likely to be family groups. Wolf packs are far
- 2:03Speaker 3: more complex. consisting of several generations staying together for life
- 2:07Speaker 3: and hunting and defending territory as a single unit.
- 2:11Speaker 1: A giant digital advertisement in Times Square promoting the new
- 2:14Speaker 1: Netflix series Below, which was shot in this province, has
- 2:18Speaker 1: some people wondering how much the province spent on the ad.
- 2:22Speaker 1: The answer is nothing. The billboard is framed as a
- 2:25Speaker 1: tongue-in-cheek tourism promotion saying visit Newfoundland and Labrador and showing
- 2:30Speaker 1: actor Josh Hartnett teasing, all our fishermen look like this,
- 2:34Speaker 1: don't yours? The provincial government says it did not provide
- 2:38Speaker 1: any financial contribution to the campaign, but was aware of
- 2:41Speaker 1: the ad and approved the use of the government logo
- 2:44Speaker 1: for the promotion of the Netflix series. The province, meanwhile,
- 2:48Speaker 1: is delighted with the exposure, saying productions like Below puts
- 2:51Speaker 1: the province, its culture, and landscapes in front of global audiences.
- 2:56Speaker 1: The series premieres October 8th. That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
